THE FUNNY
Photographer Andy Hollingworth has launched a fascinating exhibition covering 29 years of capturing some of the world’s funniest people, as Alma Stewart discovers
Considering he has captured some of the planet’s comics on film, Andy, originally from Holmfirth, Yorkshire, is very serene: “I’ve just been extremely lucky,” he says.
The impressive list of candidly captured comics includes Steve Martin, Rowan Atkinson, Ken Dodd, Sarah Millican, Romesh Ranganathan… each portrait capturing more than just a funny face – the viewer gets a glimpse beyond the entertaining exterior and into the soul within.
The foundation for this staggering collection began 50 or so years ago when a young Andy discovered his beloved grandad, not known for his cheerfulness, would howl with laughter at the Yorkshire comedian Charlie Williams on the TV. Andy wrote to Charlie, who replied, and the exchange resulted in the young man taking a photograph of Charlie’s hands, as a souvenir. A seed had been sown.
Following his grandad’s lead, Andy became a comedy fan: “I would pore over the shows of the time like Steptoe and Son and Dad’s Army. When ‘The Young Ones’ kicked in the door of comedy, I was absolutely hooked and I could never have dreamed that in the future I’d be photographing Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle and Ade Edmondson.”
Andy took up photography in 1986 while still at college in London but at first, his shyness meant that approaching people for portraits held him back. Instead, he spent his time photographing stray dogs around Whitehaven, the town where he lived at the time. The meeting with Charlie Williams boosted his confidence and soon Andy began visiting comedy clubs, getting a feeling for the emerging comedy talent: “Many of my images were taken at small gigs watching early performances. It was evident who had the skills to become successful – they just had something about them. I was approached to be a comedy agent, but this side of the industry has never really interested me –
I was happy to document what was going on in stand-up and was happy to leave the business side to others,” he said.
A couple of years into his photographic journey, Off The Kerb, a major comedy management agency, invited Andy to take some photos in a studio and slowly commissions grew. “After spending a couple of years and a steady start, once I got going, my reputation grew by word of mouth and I have had huge slices of luck,” he explains. “To be the only photographer allowed in London’s Royal Festival Hall to take photos of Steve Martin performing was a huge moment for me. He was so patient and an absolute delight.”
THE VIEWER GETS A GLIMPSE BEYOND THE ENTERTAINING EXTERIOR AND INTO THE SOUL WITHIN
The process of creating such stunning portraits is simple to Andy: “I get inspiration from all over the place – films, music, poetry and even radio shows. I have notebooks full of sketches and ideas. I didn’t have any formal photography training, but it did take me around 10 years to become adept in the studio. I think it’s very much about directing –something I didn’t do early on – and about creating a relationship with the subject. Some comics are pretty quiet in normal life but when they walk on stage a switch flicks and suddenly they are ‘on’. Certain people have such a powerful stage presence – I have been lucky enough to capture both of these personas. There is no magic secret to my work, just hard graft but I do like to stretch myself otherwise, there is no point.”
There have been some comics that sadly, Andy has not been able to capture: “I missed that chance to capture Robin Williams by a matter of weeks and was due to photograph
Photography: Julie Falzon
Caroline Aherne, but illness prevented the meeting. On the day and at their agent’s office, Craig Cash, Caroline’s co-star and friend, suggested I photograph him instead, which I did. Years later, I ran into Craig when he was performing in ‘Early Doors’ at the Lowry (my favourite sitcom) and asked if he remembered the last time I photographed him. He did, and as he was thinking about Caroline, I managed to capture him reminiscing and the love for his co-star and creative partner really shines through.”
When asked if there are still people left who Andy would like to photograph, he said that Whoopi Goldberg has always been high on his list.
Alongside his astounding images in the exhibition at the Showtown Museum, Andy is also displaying a wide collection of comedy memorabilia which he avidly compiles: “Over the years, I have come across some really special bits and pieces,” says Andy. “We’re showing a number of rare comedy tickets dating back to 1900, a huge collection of badges and programmes plus Maxine Peake’s costume from Victoria Wood’s iconic sitcom, dinnerladies.”
Andy has a fascinating story to tell about
and Hardy’s secret sailing trip to Cobh, Ireland. The ship’s passenger list found itself in the hands of the locals with the town’s school children begging their teachers to let them go to the port to get a glimpse of their cinematic heroes. As word spread, hundreds of people gathered to watch the little tender bring the pair to shore and as the duo came
I THINK IT’S VERY MUCH ABOUT DIRECTING –SOMETHING I DIDN’T DO EARLY ON – AND ABOUT CREATING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SUBJECT
into view, the bells of the cathedral rang their theme tune and Laurel and Hardy burst into tears. By this time in the 1950s, they were convinced that the world had forgotten them so this outpouring of public emotion resonated so much with the pair that Stan Laurel would go on to call it the greatest day of his life. One of the 10 year-old boys (now 80 yearsold) who had begged the teacher to go to the dock, became the bell ringer at the cathedral and Andy went to extraordinary lengths to recreate elements of that day along with Stan’s
Ulverston. This has since been made into a charming documentary film ‘Last Dance Of The Cuckoos’ which will be screened as part of the exhibition’s events programme. With a host of international exhibitions under his belt and an extensive body of work behind him, are there any goals left to achieve? “I’d love to do a book,” he muses. And what an incredible book that would be. n
I Photograph Comedians runs until 23rd February 2025 at Showtown, Blackpool.
There are a number of special events linked to the show including gallery tours with Andy on the 30th November (alongside a rare screening of his Laurel and Hardy film) and 15th February and a Q&A session based around Britain’s black comedy heroes with Che Burnley on 24th October.

An Ultra Chic Contemporary Kitchen
When Nicole and Anthony embarked on an ambitious renovation of their Worsley home they planned each room with painstaking detail, wanting the very best and for the overall aesthetic to flow seamlessly throughout the house.
With a keen eye for design, Nicole knew the look she wanted and approached a local kitchen company. They came up with a range of designs but although there was nothing wrong with them, the couple felt that they would like an alternative design.
Says Nicole: “I knew something was missing with the design and that it could be improved but I didn’t know how. After one visit to Rowan, he came up with a brandnew design that was spot on and was just what I wanted. It really had the wow factor and transformed the end of the room which was previously a dead space in the other design, in to an area with stunning statement shelving.”
An overall dark aesthetic was chosen with a Dark Walnut door contrasting with a Matt Laquered Cashmere door and a feature Black Oak Ribbed Veneer door. This all paired well with the White Haze quartz worktop featuring an intricate reverse shark nose edge detail with a quartz surround and splashback to the sink area.
A hidden clever feature behind one of the tall units is a secret door to the family’s gym in the room behind. Rowan also included a breakfast cupboard in the design with worktop space inside for appliances which Nicole loves as it enables everything to be hidden and closed away with no appliances showing.
Nicole and Anthony are delighted with the finished kitchen and found everyone at Kitchen Design Centre to be incredible, from Rowan through to the fitters who were brilliant, installing everything on time and in an organised, neat way.
“We are over the moon with the finished kitchen it’s way beyond our initial expectations. It looks amazing and fits perfectly with the rest of the house.”
To read more about how we designed this kitchen and to view the video tour of it visit: www.kitchendesigncentre.com
Designer Rowan Chick says,
“I loved designing this kitchen. Knowing that Nicole had a keen eye for design meant she had a good idea of the look she was after and wasn’t afraid to go for dramatic, bold choices. From the dark cabinetry to the unique quartz, everything works perfectly, and the overall look is incredible.”
ON TO A WINNER!
Award-winning Bannister Hall is coming up to a busy time in the season when root ball and bare root hedging and trees will soon be planted
For the second year in a row, Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies & Plants Nurseries has won best stand in the over 36m 2 category at the Royal Lancashire Show.
Situated in a prime position directly in front of the main entrance, the Bannister Hall stand encompassed a detailed show
garden boasting a myriad of horticultural wonders from large specimen trees, beautiful perennials, delightful shrubs and elegant garden stoneware. Proving popular with visitors of all ages, this delightful show garden welcomed visitors with a winding journey along a stunning Indian sandstone block-paving pathway, leading from the show garden’s entrance beneath three Jasmine arches to arrive at a purpose-built Millboard decking area. With inbuilt seating and surrounded on all sides with colourfully fragrant planted beds, many visitors spent time relaxing and unwinding in a garden of solitude from the shows otherwise busy areas.
Indeed, this intricately stunning show garden was designed by no other than Alan Lovell, the Chairman and founder of Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies, who 25 years prior had a unique idea to create a ‘one-stop’ landscaping supplies centre by combining a comprehensively stocked builder’s merchants with a large plant nursery boasting access to over 40,000 different plant species. Since its early beginnings, Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies has grown to become the North West’s largest single-source supplier of landscaping materials and plants, offering both trade and retail customers a first-rate customer service, qualified horticultural expert advice, and the latest in
3D CGI garden design service to help create inspirational outdoor spaces.
Alan explains: “The project this year involved designing a multi-dimensional and inspirational show garden that incorporated a flavour of the vast array of landscaping materials, specimen trees, hedging plants and shrubs we offer at Bannister Hall. The installation of the show garden took six days and was undertaken by one of our recommended professional contractors Bedrock Landscapes, who graciously undertook the majority of the project build with fantastic results.”
Based in Higher Walton, Preston, Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies specialises in the growing, sourcing and delivering of specimen trees and hedging plants, providing both retail and trade customers with a handy local alternative to the expensive prices found at garden centres.
Whilst Bannister Hall offers a wide variety of pot grown trees and hedging plants akin to the local garden centre, they also offer these in both root ball and bare root options, and the savings are rather significant.
Unlike pot-grown trees and hedging plants, root ball and bare root plants are grown naturally in a field and then lifted in a dormant phase at certain times of the year. This offers numerous benefits for the consumer and a highly cost-effective solution for planting a hedge or tree line, especially when covering a larger area. What’s more, Bannister Hall have their own fleet of specialised crane trucks that will deliver your hedges and trees of all sizes direct to site.
The season for root ball and bare root hedging plants and trees is now approaching, running from October to around March. Impressively, at Bannister Hall, your root ball and bare root hedging can even be pre-ordered throughout August and September with exceptional early-order discounts and with customers being assured of product availability in this high-demand period. Indeed, it is during the winter months, that trees and shrubs enter a dormant period, which makes it an ideal time to lift them from the ground and to move them to
a new area. Lifting and transporting trees in the winter gives the plants time to settle, after which, they are ready to wake up and sprout again in spring. Certainly, root ball refers to the bio-degradable hessian sack that encapsulates the ball of earth containing the root system of the plant when it has been lifted from the ground. When transported to its new location the plant and the sack containing its roots are planted as one. The process is quick and straight forward, and the success rates usually very high.
CUSTOMERS ARE ABLE TO CHOOSE THEIR TREES AND HEDGING IN A WIDE VARIETY OF SPECIES AND SIZES AT A GREATLY REDUCED COST FROM POT GROWN ALTERNATIVES
There are multiple benefits to planting hedging and trees in root balls, one of which is that they are already strong, healthy and mature plants with an established root system. This gives the plant a much better chance of survival whilst creating an ‘instant hedge’ at the size and species desired. This takes away the waiting for plants to develop and ‘knit’ into the desired density you require, and you literally have a fully grown hedge within a day of taking delivery.
Whilst bare root plants do not necessarily have the same immediate impact as the root ball alternative, come spring, there will be an abundance of thriving greenery. Bare roots come with stems of varying heights
and with a healthy root system. They arrive with the root exposed but are ready for planting and with time and patience you will have a thriving hedge that will transform your garden.
At Bannister Hall, customers are able to choose their trees and hedging in a wide variety of species and sizes at a greatly reduced cost from pot grown alternatives. Furthermore, qualified horticulturalists are on hand to advise you on the best species of root ball or bare root for your landscaping project. Pre-order your hedging plants and trees from Bannister Hall today and benefit from a wide variety of choice, assured availability and incredible savings. n

A POTTED HISTORY
Growing since 1884, the Chorley and District Gardening Society have been bringing together the local community and gardeners of all levels of experience
The origins of the Society go back to 1884 when Great Britain was still in the grip of ‘The Class Wars’. It was decided by a group of prominent gentlemen that they would canvass the local gentry with a view to forming a Chrysanthemum Society. To eliminate the working class, they fixed the annual subscription at a high figure so that the working man could only exhibit in the local public houses, these being The Townley Arms, The Plough Inn, Sebastopol Inn and the Old Burton Ale Stores in Bolton Street.
The first meeting was held on 5th May 1884 at the Red Lion, Market Street, Chorley. A committee was formed featuring four Vicars, one Rector, one Doctor, one Colonel, a Justice of the Peace, one Accountant, one Mayor, and several Aldermen and Councillors from the Borough of Chorley.
The first show, which offered lunch listening to a string band and speeches, was
held in the Town Hall, Chorley over two days, in November 1884. The classes came under three strict headings: Open Class, Gentleman’s Class and Amateur’s Class.
GARDENING IS A HOBBY OR PASTIME THAT IS OFTEN PERCEIVED AS BEING FOR THE OLDER GENERATION, BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE
To enter, there was a fee of 2s-6d and prize money of 55 Shillings. The Gentleman’s Class raised a prize of 60 Shillings. To achieve this high standard, a conservatory was required as well as a full-time gardener to tend the blooms.
During the next 10 years mixed fortunes surrounded the Society. The show often included renditions from local Choral Societies together with the usual lunches. In 1890 a bar was set up run by the Red Lion from Chorley, to encourage further exhibitors.
The following 20 years saw a new generation emerging and more amateur gardeners competing. In the early 1900s the first working man was allowed to become a committee member following his personal undisputed success in the growing of the Chrysanthemum.
In the 1920s various lectures were introduced, with the shows reported in the Chorley Weekly News. Trips were offered and Chorley Council began to support the Society with shows taking place at the Town Hall, often with the Chorley Orchestra in attendance.
By 1984, the Chrysanthemum Society had become Chorley & District Horticultural & Chrysanthemum Society, and by 1992 it was decided that Chorley & District Gardening Society was a friendlier and more inclusive option.
Today, the Society is thriving with over 100 members, many attending the monthly meetings at the Hall of St. Mary’s Church in Euxton. The Society’s own Flower Show is held each September and will be held at Euxton Community Hall on 7th September 2024.
Chairman David Brown said: “Gardening is a hobby or pastime that is often perceived as being for the older generation, but this is definitely not the case. Now younger people are appreciating the benefits of having a garden, however small, in which they can grow fruit and vegetables, as well as having a nice flower display.” n

A WINDOW TO THE WORLD
Celebrating light, space and the natural world, the boundary between the inside and outside fades away in this beautiful, tranquil retreat
Nestled in the serene landscape of Bolton-by-Bowland lies a home that has mastered the art of blending the indoors with the great outdoors. The homeowners’ vision was clear – to create a space where the stunning Lancashire countryside becomes an ever-present feature, framed perfectly by an expanse of carefully crafted windows and doors. The result is a light and airy sanctuary that invites nature and elevates it, turning the views into living art.
The design of the house pays homage to the elegance of simplicity, with the use of white as a dominant theme. Much like a gallery uses white walls to allow artwork to take centre stage, this home employs a similar strategy. The interiors are bathed in soft, natural light
that pours in from the outside, bouncing off the pristine surfaces and filling every corner with warmth and brightness. The choice of white wood grain-effect UPVC for the windows and doors further enhances this effect, adding a touch of texture.
At the heart of this design are the windows, a stunning collection of Croft bespoke flushsash, triple-glazed masterpieces. These are no ordinary windows – they are the portals through which the homeowners experience the lush rolling hills of the Ribble Valley every day. With a total of 16 windows, each fitted with astragal bar detail, the views are beautifully framed, creating a series of picture-perfect scenes that change with the seasons. From the vibrant colours of spring blossom to the golden hues of autumn, the landscape is ever-changing.
The French door, with its fixed pane windows, is a true statement piece. Triple-glazed and expansive, it offers an uninterrupted view of the outside, almost as if the glass itself were invisible. The stable door and full-view back door continue this theme,
offering practicality without compromising on aesthetics. These doors don’t just connect the home to the outside, they invite the outside in, blurring the boundaries between the interior and the vast outdoors.
But it’s not just the views that captivate. The interior is a testament to design-led craftsmanship, with beautifully executed black ironmongery that adds a touch of elegance. These details, though subtle, stand out against the white backdrop, creating a striking contrast that ties the entire design together.
Every element has been carefully considered to ensure nothing detracts from the beauty of the countryside. n
For those seeking inspiration on how to make the most of their natural surroundings, this home offers a masterclass in how to do it right.

September will see the wildlife in your garden beginning to prepare for the winter ahead
The weather may still be warm, especially in the south, and there may still be lots of butterflies about in particular red admirals and small tortoiseshells, but if you look around the garden you will sees signs of autumn everywhere.
Time to start thinking about planting bulbs in beds and containers – that will provide bumblebees and honeybees with pollen when they are first searching for food in the spring and will provide you with a seasonal flowerfilled garden. You can start with snowdrops that flower in February and then move on to crocuses and daffodils followed by tulips and alliums that take you through to May.
Work out where you are going to plant your bulbs before you buy them. Crocuses will fit into gaps at the front of a border. Planting tulips in pots can bring a spring floral display to patios or terraces from March through to May. Daffodils are best planted in groups of 10 or more and can flower through to late
spring, although the more northerly you live the later the flowering will be. Try Narcissus ‘Jetfire’ which grows to 20cm tall, flowers in March or April with dainty golden yellow petals and bright orange trumpets. Narcissus ‘Jenny’ is 30cm in height, with creamy-white petals and a slender lemon-yellow trumpet
PLANTING TULIPS IN POTS CAN BRING A SPRING FLORAL DISPLAY TO PATIOS OR TERRACES FROM MARCH THROUGH TO MAY
or Narcissus ‘Actaea’ – 45cm in height, with fragrant, pure white flowers and a small, redrimmed yellow cup, ideal for late spring. Some spring flowering bulbs, such as wood anemones and snowdrops, have adapted to
growing under the canopy of trees and shrubs, completing their life cycle before deciduous trees and shrubs come into full leaf, making the most of the early spring sunlight. However, other spring-flowering bulbs like open space where there is no shade. Apart from selecting and planting spring bulbs, other top jobs for gardeners this month include:
• Divide herbaceous perennials. This not only ensures healthy, vigorous plants that will continue to perform year after year but also gives you the opportunity to multiply your plants.
• Take cuttings of tender perennials such as Pelargonium. These plants often do better grown from new cuttings each year. If you don’t have a greenhouse, then use a light windowsill to grow them on.
• Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals. Growing plants from seed is straightforward and inexpensive and lets you increase the number of plants in your garden for free. n
WHAT THE EXPERTS
SAY:
September is the month when everything in the garden thins out, as though the colours and light were being gently stretched and the leaves on the hedges gradually yellow. The vegetable garden gives its most abundant harvest throughout September but with a sense, as the month draws to a close, that the productive year is ending. It is a busy time with cuttings to be taken, seeds collected, much to harvest and hedge cutting to complete all before the weather turns.
Monty Don
September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are noticeably shorter. While there’s not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can!

WINTER WARMERS
Autumn and winter months in the garden needn’t be dull. There are plants offering an array of vibrant foliage colours, berries and even flowers from September and beyond. Michael Cookson from Newgate nurseries takes you through some of his favourites
Perennials
Helleborous Nigra – this evergreen shade loving Christmas rose produces waxy white flowers from October through to spring.
Heuchera Berry Smoothie – another evergreen perennial, this produces a low rounded hummock of rich pink foliage which turns to silver in winter and back to pink in the spring.
Hesperantha Coccinea – rich pink star like flowers are held above rich green sword like foliage throughout October-December. The last perennial to flower in the garden.
Shrubs
Mahonia Soft Caress – the best of both worlds, this dwarf evergreen shrub boasts soft dissect foliage with rich yellow flowers in late autumn.
Skimmia Japonica Rubella – this dwarf evergreen is a male clone meaning that it produces bright red flower buds which look like berries opening to white scented flowers in the spring. Shade loving and low growing.
Viburnum Tinus Eve Price – quite a popular evergreen shrub which produces masses of pink/white flowers through autumn and winter. The flowers persist into the spring and are followed by blue summer fruits.
Trees

This issue, fashion historian, Scott William Schiavone, delves into the rich history of the paisley shawl and its lasting legacy
As autumn approaches, fashion becomes all about cosy layers, rich colours and versatile pieces that can transition from the mild days to the cooler evenings. The shawl is a staple piece for autumn and the most famous is the paisley shawl.
The paisley shawl, a vibrant and intricately designed textile, has a rich history that spans continents and centuries. Originating from the Kashmir region in India, these shawls were first woven in the 15th century. The most distinctive feature of these shawls is the teardrop-shaped motif known as the ‘boteh’ or ‘buta’, which symbolises life and eternity in Persian culture. This design element is central to the paisley pattern, which later became globally recognised.
The shawls were originally made from the fine wool of the Changthangi goat, indigenous to the high altitudes of the Himalayas. The weaving process was labour-intensive, often taking years to complete a single shawl. These shawls became highly prized items in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, brought back by European merchants and
colonial officials who had encountered them in India.
The town of Paisley in Scotland, after which the pattern is named, became synonymous with these shawls during the early 19th century. The industrial revolution brought significant changes to textile production and
the Scottish weavers in Paisley began to imitate the Kashmiri shawls using Jacquard looms which allowed for the mass production, making them more affordable to the general public. The town became a major centre for the production of these shawls and the name ‘Paisley’ became closely associated with the pattern.
Paisley shawls reached the height of their popularity during the Victorian era. They were considered a symbol of wealth and status. The intricate designs and the luxurious feel of the shawls made them a fashionable accessory.
ORIGINATING FROM THE KASHMIR REGION IN INDIA, THESE SHAWLS
WERE
FIRST WOVEN IN THE 15TH CENTURY
The connection between paisley shawls and John Forbes Watson’s Textile Manufacturers of India books highlights the global influence and significance of Indian textiles during the 19th century. Published in the 1860s, Watson’s volumes were an extensive survey of India’s rich textile traditions. The books were distributed to all the major textile producing regions in the UK, including Preston which was a prominent cotton manufacturing hub. The Harris Museum is lucky to have a complete set in the collection. Among the many fabrics documented were the intricate shawls that had captivated European markets.

While John Forbes Watson’s books were instrumental in documenting the rich textile heritage of India, they were also problematic. Watson’s work, created during the height of British colonial rule, primarily served the interests of British manufacturers rather than those of the Indian artisans who created the textiles. By providing detailed descriptions and samples of each fabric, including shawls, Watson effectively enabled British and European manufacturers to replicate these designs on a large scale, without proper recognition or compensation to the original creators. This contributed to the decline of India’s traditional textile industries, as cheaper, machine-made and sometimes printed rather than woven versions flooded the market. Watson’s approach reflected a colonial mindset that viewed Indian craftsmanship as a resource to be exploited for the benefit of the British economy, rather than as a cultural treasure to be respected and preserved.
By the late 19th century, the vogue for paisley shawls began to wane as fashion trends changed and mass production techniques led to a decline in the quality of the shawls. As paisley shawls fell out of fashion, many of these exquisite textiles were repurposed into other garments such as coats, jackets,

women’s and even children’s dresses, giving them a new lease of life. The Harris Museum has in its collections a beautiful child’s dress, dating from 1902, which is repurposed from a printed paisley shawl. In the design you can see how the tailor skilfully cut and stitched the intricate patterns into new forms, preserving the beauty of the paisley design while adapting it to the changing tastes of the time. The repurposed garments often became cherished heirlooms, passed down through generations, ensuring its continued relevance and presence in the fashion world.
TODAY, THE PAISLEY PATTERN REMAINS A TIMELESS DESIGN, FREQUENTLY USED IN FASHION AND HOME DÉCOR
Today, the paisley pattern remains a timeless design, frequently used in fashion and home décor. While the original handwoven Kashmiri shawls are rare and valuable, the legacy of the paisley shawl continues, representing a blend of cultural exchange, craftsmanship and industrial innovation. The enduring appeal of the ‘boteh’ or ‘buta’ motif stands as a testament to its rich history and global influence. n

Gail Bailey chats to Vareys Town & Country owner Kevin Horkin about the exciting opening of the new Lytham store
Popular Clitheroe outdoor clothing store Vareys Town & Country are expanding to the coast with their brand-new shop on Lytham High Street.
What made you choose Lytham as the location for your new store?
We already have customers who come from Lytham to our Clitheroe store – and prior to that 10 years ago when we had a shop in Skipton we would have some regular customers from Lytham come there too. Being by the coast, and a place a lot of people enjoy visiting and walking, it is a really good match for
what we do and the clothing and accessories we sell.
Will the Lytham store stock the same brands as Clitheroe?
Yes we’re happy to let everyone know that we will be stocking the same quality brands including Barbour, Dubarry, Aigle, Berghaus, Merrell and many more.
THE RANGE INCLUDES A VARIETY OF CLOTHING SUITABLE FOR DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES, CLIMATES, AND OCCASIONS
We will have a full range of R M Williams in the store – one of the best-known and best-loved boot brands in the world. They are designed with purpose at the core of each pair, ensuring comfort, style and durability; the range makes boots that are really made to last.
The Lytham store will be a key stockist also of iconic German brand Schöffel with no other store stocking this fabulous range for miles around us. They specialise in high-quality clothing for outdoor life with a real classic
style; Schöffel’s products are favoured by so many of our regular customers. The range includes a variety of clothing suitable for different activities, climates and occasions. One of Schöffel’s standout items that we will stock is their fleece gilets for men and women. These sleeveless layers provide warmth and comfort while allowing freedom of movement, making them ideal for outdoor adventures – like walking along the wonderful stretch of Lytham sea front!

How did you choose the location/building in Lytham?
It isn’t easy securing a retail location in Lytham and we had been looking for about five years for the perfect spot. It is quite unique as a town and really popular, so we were thrilled when we found the building in the centre of the High Street. Being on
three floors it will allow us to expand as the business does and we’ve enjoyed the renovation of the building and designing the space to create an authentic rustic and country feel. We know customers will love the new store and the whole shopping experience it creates.
Is there a click and collect service at the shop?
Yes, this will be available in Lytham as well
as iPads in the shop where customers can browse the full range of the collections we have and will be able to buy and collect the same day anything we don’t have in stock. We will have a delivery van on the road to ensure we give our customers the most efficient service possible with no need to wait a long time to receive the items they choose. Outstanding customer service is at the heart of what we have always done at Vareys and we are happy to bring this to Lytham and Fylde.
OUTSTANDING
CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE AT VAREYS AND WE ARE HAPPY TO BRING THIS TO LYTHAM AND FYLDE
What will the opening times of the store be?
We will be open for five days a week from September when we launch the store but as the autumn and winter season unfolds this will move to seven days.
A lot of people come to Lytham at the weekend, and especially on a Sunday so we want to ensure they are able to visit the shop as part of their day. The wonderful thing about the Lytham and the Fylde region is that there is an event somewhere in the area almost every week. The annual Lytham Festival has become a key date in people’s diaries and grown so much over the years – and there are regular shows and events all around the town including at Lytham Hall and the Pavilion, so it really is the perfect place to visit and we

Be aware of what others say about the past relationships or attitudes of the person you are considering starting a relationship with. If there’s a common theme that backs up your initial thoughts trust your gut instincts. It can save a lot of pain later.
Establishing and maintaining personal boundaries is essential. Narcissists often test these limits, seeking to dominate and control. This may begin from your initial meeting or phone calls.
Be firm and assertive in enforcing your limits and observe the response. A healthy partner will respect your boundaries, whereas a narcissist will likely react negatively or try to manipulate you into changing them.
Maintaining a strong sense of self-worth and confidence is crucial. Narcissists often prey on individuals with low self-esteem,
MIND MATTERS
There is only one person in a narcissistic relationship – and it isn’t you, writes therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes
If you read my article in the last issue of Live Ribble Valley you will be fully aware, even if you haven’t been there, how destructive a narcissistic relationship can be. Entering a relationship with a narcissist can be emotionally draining and damaging. Recognising and avoiding such relationships requires awareness, vigilance and a commitment to self-care. Everyone should be aware of how to avoid getting into the most damaging of relationships. If you have been there before, there will be no need to tell you to be careful. If you have not experienced the impact of such a relationship, there is still a number of key things to look out for. Narcissists often exhibit an inflated sense of self-importance, a need for excessive
admiration and a lack of empathy for others. They may manipulate, exploit and demean those around them to maintain their selfimage. Being aware of these characteristics can help in identifying potential red flags early in a relationship. Even in early conversations the way they speak about themselves and others, can generate a discomfort in you that is often too easy to brush to one side as someone just trying too hard to impress.
Pay attention to how the person talks about their past relationships. Narcissists often describe their ex-partners in entirely negative terms, portraying themselves as the perpetual victim. They may also boast excessively about their achievements, seeking constant validation. If you notice someone frequently steering conversations back to themselves or showing little interest in your thoughts and feelings, it could be a warning sign.
Initial impressions can be deceiving, as narcissists are often charming and charismatic. Take your time to get to know the person and observe their behaviour in different situations. Notice how they treat others, particularly those they perceive as having lower status. Consistently disrespectful or condescending behaviour towards service staff, for instance, can be indicative of a narcissistic personality.
exploiting their insecurities. Engage in activities that build your confidence. When you value yourself, you’re less likely to tolerate disrespectful or manipulative behaviour from others.
Listen to your gut feelings. If something feels off, it probably is. Narcissists are skilled at creating confusion and doubt in their partners, causing them to second-guess their perceptions. Trusting your instincts and taking your feelings seriously can help you avoid falling under their power.
If you find yourself repeatedly attracting narcissistic partners, consider seeking help from a therapist. Professional guidance can help you understand underlying patterns in your relationship choices and develop healthier ones. Therapy can also provide tools to strengthen your self-esteem and improve your ability to set and maintain boundaries.
Don’t kid yourself that they will change, even if there are encouraging signs. It won’t last and is often a part of the power play. A good, healthy relationship should add to your life in a positive way. You should be equal partners and be shown love and respect. Don’t accept anything less – it is what you deserve. n

of the way. There are also regular member events and seminars centred around health and wellbeing which provide opportunities to learn, connect and grow.
Lucie tells me: “We tried hard to create a niche space that our members want to spend time in, equipped with the very best equipment and coaching with luxury bathroom facilities. Our mezzanine break-out space with free Wi-Fi is comfortable and somewhere where members can unwind and refuel with a post workout protein shake or simply take a coffee with other members. THINKING ON YOUR FEET
Foot health is too important to be ignored but fortunately maintaining healthy feet has never been easier with the use of innovative technology
Most people’s health concerns revolve primarily around diet, exercise, and mental wellness –yet foot health is an essential but often overlooked aspect of our overall wellness and remains an unsung hero. The structure and function of our feet impact our posture, balance and the alignment of our entire body so don’t we owe it to ourselves to start taking care of them?
Routine foot care involves more than just an occasional pedicure or wearing ‘sensible’ shoes, it should include regular check-ups with a podiatrist, in the same way you’d go for a regular check-up with your dentist. This is even more important if you experience pain, discomfort, or notice any changes in the way you walk. Issues such as flat feet, high arches, or an improper gait can have a knock-on effect, leading to pain in the knees, hips, back, and even the neck. Over time, these problems can worsen, leading to more serious conditions like arthritis or joint degeneration.
A regular appointment with a trained podiatrist will help identify minor problems such as corns, bunions, cracked heels and ingrown toenails which can be easily visually identified and treated and managed. But what about underlying conditions that can’t be seen – this is where the use of pressure plate technology in clinic can be a game-changer.
David Nicholls, founder and lead practitioner at That Foot Shop tells me: “Unlike traditional methods of examination that rely on visual
ROUTINE FOOT CARE INVOLVES MORE THAN JUST AN OCCASIONAL PEDICURE OR WEARING ‘SENSIBLE’ SHOES, IT SHOULD INCLUDE REGULAR CHECK-UPS WITH A PODIATRIST
inspection, we use the ‘Gait and Motion Technologies Footscan’ system which gives me a dynamic view of how your feet interact with the ground. This information is crucial because it helps to identify imbalances, abnormal pressure points, and areas that may be prone to injury. From this I’m able to provide personalised recommendations, whether it’s custom orthotics, specific exercises, or changes in footwear. Conditions such as flat feet, plantar fasciitis, or even the
early stages of diabetic foot complications can be detected and addressed before they become more serious problems.”
The use of this technology is relatively widespread and as a preventative tool, can save you significant costs in the long run, but more importantly, avoid clients enduring weeks, maybe months, of chronic pain and conditions that require expensive treatment from physical therapy to surgery. Identifying issues early through a pressure plate analysis, it’s possible to take proactive steps to avoid these outcomes.
That Foot Shop makes it easy for you to prioritise foot health, it’s easily accessible and has ample free parking ensuring that getting the care you need is convenient and stress-free. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are dedicated to providing you with the highest level of care, ensuring that you feel comfortable and supported throughout your visit. n

CLOSER TO NATURE
Biomimetic materials that literally mimic nature, are revolutionising dentistry and here in the Ribble Valley, one forward-thinking practice is one of the leading pioneers of this technique
Always keeping ahead of the industry, leading private dental practice Renovo is one of the first practices in the UK that has fully adopted the very latest techniques that can successfully restore teeth by using materials that mimic nature and the natural tooth. Biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising the way dentists can restore and repair teeth as
Dr Usman Riaz of Ribble Valley-based Renovo explains: “This is micro-invasive dentistry. We can preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible metal-free materials that act, feel and look just like our natural teeth.”
AVOIDING ROOT CANALS
“Biomimetic dentistry can help reduce your need for root canal therapy by up to 90 per cent. With immediate dentin sealing and resin coating, biomimetic dentistry gives pulps a vital chance to heal, helping maintain their natural resilience and extend their life. This is at the forefront of our core values,” adds Dr Riaz.
These latest advances in dental technology are set to change the way we view restorative dentistry. For teeth that have been damaged, porcelain crowns and veneers have, in the past, been the solution. However, more recent developments in bonding technology and the bio-materials used, have given dentists a new alternative, usually with no tooth removal.
PREDICTABLE OUTCOMES AND PAIN-FREE LONGERLASTING TEETH
Biomimetic restorations treat the causes of symptoms (cracks or caries near the pulp) so they do not result in sensitivity or pain after restoration: “Biomimetic techniques also restore the tooth in a way that mimics a tooth’s natural structure, preventing cracks around the restoration. Finally, the advanced adhesive techniques used in a biomimetic restoration have been shown to keep a restoration bonded for over 20 years, and counting, so the days of crowns or fillings falling out can be a thing of the past!”
These restorative materials that mimic nature, are not only perfect for aesthetically restoring teeth but they also help preserve and strengthen the natural tooth structure.
SCIENCE-BACKED DENTAL TREATMENT
Biomimetic dentistry is more technique sensitive and requires more detailed steps than traditional restorative practices. With Renovo’s approach, the dentists and the whole clinical team understand the science, or what we call the ‘why’ behind each step in their biomimetic restoration. The systematic steps
take the guesswork out of treatment planning, leaving clinicians and patients feeling confident in every restoration.
IMPROVED AESTHETICS
“Biomimetic dentistry is general dentistry and can be applied to every case we see at Renovo. The concepts of conserving tooth structure, saving pulps and superior adhesion will serve as a more predictable foundation of our work,” explains Dr Riaz. “We can change, reshape and enhance teeth with these new materials. The biomimetic materials are also reinforcing teeth – it is a totally different concept to what we have seen previously.”
Adopting the latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available to them, the dentists at Renovo are pioneering in
their unique approach.
“Specialist techniques are used in biomimetic dentistry and the whole team have had advanced training,” says Dr Riaz. “For us, using non-invasive techniques and preserving teeth has always been something
WE GET OPTIMAL RESULTS WITH ZERO TOOTH REMOVAL AND THAT’S WHY THE BIOMIMETIC APPROACH IS SO POPULAR
we routinely believe in and practice, so biomimetic dentistry sits really well with that belief.
“It’s the way dentistry should be done –to save and conserve teeth has always been our gold standard.”
ZERO TOOTH LOSS MAXIMUM AESTHETICS
For nervous patients the biomimetic approach revolutionises the way they view a dental appointment: “For those people, this is an amazing development as the approach is to conserve tooth tissue using minimally invasive techniques. No anaesthetic is needed as there is zero tooth removal.”
While biomimetic dentistry can help to naturally strengthen and restore damaged teeth, it is also perfect for cosmetic procedures: “From a cosmetic point of view we can improve without having to compromise, which is a very powerful concept.
“With the latest biomimetic materials, we get incredible results and in many cases, it is much quicker too, as it often involves just one visit to the dentist.
“These treatment concepts and philosophy are popular in the US and Europe, but it has taken time to develop in the UK. We have had to understand the materials and perfect new techniques so we can carry out dentistry at a different level.”
HEALTHIER TEETH HEALTHIER YOU
By removing all toxicity and inflammation from the mouth, biological dentistry helps restore vitality, balance and systemic health.
“What we put in our mouth and more importantly, the teeth themselves, has a crucial role to play in our overall health. Gut health begins in the mouth. It’s more than just a gateway – it’s a mirror reflecting our overall health.” n

ROSA Knee System Available at Fulwood Hall Hospital
Private patients at Fulwood Hall Hospital could now benefit from a precise and personalised knee replacement with a Robotic Surgical Assistant commonly known as ROSA.
As a result of utilising this innovative technology patients may achieve a greater degree of joint flexibility allowing a quicker return to normal activity(1). A total knee replacement is a very common and effective treatment for patients suffering with significant arthritis of the knee joint. However, the success of an individual’s knee replacement surgery is closely linked to the fit and function of the knee implant(2). The ROSA knee system is now available which will help to support your surgeon to target improved fit and function than before
The ROSA knee system was designed by surgeons for surgeons, bringing together advanced technologies to collect and analyse data before and during your surgery to assist in the planning and placement of your prosthetic knee replacement. It informs surgeons of unique details related to your knee, helping to understand how they can optimise their surgical plan specifically to you. Knee replacement surgery using the ROSA knee system is very similar to traditional surgery. The ROSA knee system combines precise data and a robotic arm, with your surgeon’s skill and experience(3) It is important to note that the robot does not perform the surgery, it assists the surgeon with live data and guidance throughout the surgery.
It is suggested that robotic assisted knee replacement surgery is linked with reduced pain, lower usage of pain relief medication, fewer physiotherapy sessions and overall improved knee function following surgery(1). Robotic surgery has also been linked to shorter hospital stays and lower rates of hospital readmission compared to traditional surgical techniques(4&5)
During surgery, ROSA uses a camera and sensor which can detect even the smallest movements in real-time, providing live feedback throughout surgery via a digital display and with the help of a robotic guiding arm, ROSA helps your surgeon precisely place the implant according to their plan. Finally, to ensure the best possible outcome, ROSA helps the surgeon to assess the knee with the implant in place. This allows your surgeon to make final precise adjustments before finishing the surgery. It is hoped that robotic assisted knee replacement surgery will improve overall outcomes and is associated with lower post-surgery revision rates(1)

A CHARMING LANCASHIRE GEM
Nestled in the heart of Lancashire, Garstang is a picturesque market town that effortlessly blends history with modern charm. Its rich heritage, coupled with its stunning natural surroundings, makes it a captivating destination for visitors and a delightful place to call home. Photography: VisitLancashire.com
Garstang’s history stretches back centuries, with its name appearing in the Domesday Book as ‘Cherestanc’. This ancient lineage is evident in the town’s character, with its cobbled streets and traditional buildings whispering tales of the past. The town’s strategic location on the River Ribble made it an important trading post along the Roman road from Lancaster to York. Evidence of this Roman presence can still be seen today in the form of Roman artifacts and the remains of a Roman fort.
Garstang’s strategic location between the city of Preston and nearby Lancaster has shaped its development, making it a bustling hub for the surrounding agricultural community.
The town’s architectural heritage is a
testament to its history. Quaint cobbled streets lined with charming buildings transport visitors to a bygone era. Garstang’s Grade II listed Town Hall, a fine example of Georgian architecture, stands proudly as a symbol of the town’s civic life.
WHETHER YOU’RE SEEKING STYLISH BOUTIQUES, ARTISANAL BAKERIES, OR COSY PUBS, YOU’LL FIND SOMETHING TO SUIT YOUR TASTE
Garstang’s historic centre is a delight to explore, with its well-preserved medieval buildings and quaint shops. One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is St. Thomas’ Church, a beautiful Grade I listed building dating back
to the 12th century. The church features stunning stained-glass windows and intricate stonework. Its elegant spire is an iconic landmark that dominates the skyline.
Another must-see attraction is Garstang Heritage Centre, which houses a fascinating collection of exhibits relating to the town’s history. Visitors can learn about Garstang’s Roman past, its medieval market days, and its more recent industrial heritage.
Beyond its historic charm, Garstang offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The town is renowned for its community spirit, with a range of events and festivals throughout the year. From the lively Christmas market to the colourful summer fayre, there’s always something to celebrate.
One of the highlights of Garstang is its vibrant market, a tradition dating back to the early 1300s. Every Thursday, the town comes alive with a colourful array of stalls offering fresh produce, local crafts and delicious treats. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture and
pick up unique souvenirs. Garstang and the surrounding areas often host farmers’ markets, where you can buy fresh, locally sourced produce.
And if you’re looking for something a bit different, the Garstang Scarecrow Festival is a popular annual event that brings the community together and showcases the creativity of local residents. The festival typically takes place in the summer months and features a variety of scarecrows displayed throughout the town.
THE TOWN PROUDLY HOLDS THE TITLE OF THE WORLD’S FIRST FAIRTRADE TOWN
Beyond its historical allure, Garstang boasts a delightful mix of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Whether you’re seeking stylish boutiques, artisanal bakeries, or cosy pubs, you’ll find something to suit your taste. The town’s commitment to supporting local businesses creates a unique shopping experience, where you can discover hidden gems and interact with friendly shopkeepers.
Nature lovers will be enchanted by Garstang’s surroundings. The River Wyre gracefully meanders through the town, offering opportunities for peaceful walks and riverside picnics. The nearby Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, beckons with its rolling hills, ancient woodlands and breathtaking vistas. Whether you prefer leisurely strolls or exhilarating hikes, the area has something to offer everyone.
Garstang’s dedication to sustainability and community spirit is evident in its achievements. The town proudly holds the title of the world’s first Fairtrade Town, reflecting its commitment to ethical and environmentally friendly practices.
Without a doubt, Garstang is a hidden gem that deserves to be discovered. With its rich history, charming atmosphere and stunning natural surroundings, it offers a truly unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply seeking a relaxing escape, this Lancashire town will capture your heart. n

“My grandparents started the farm shop in 1970,” began Liz Laycock. “They had four small children when grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer. Grandad gave up work as a builder, bought a small holding and advertised in the Evening Post that a new farm shop was opening down Eaves Lane. Seeing the advertisement, grandma asked him where the shop was?
Grandad replied: ‘Well I’m building it now aren’t I!’ Starting with meat sales to neighbours, the business steadily grew. Dad and uncle borrowed a book on

GROWING PLACES
Breathe fresh life into your outdoor space into a latter-day Eden with the aid of Wyre Gardens’ team of inspirational experts, writes Bridget Rowan
Aflourishing gardening enterprise has sprung from a combined love of all things nature. Charismatic entrepreneurs Mark Sargeant and Ashley Illman pooled their artistic talents to form thriving landscape design and build business Wyre Gardens two-and-ahalf years ago.
And the Garstang-based company has already had a massive impact.
Landscape gardener Mark and garden designer Ashley started their fledgling business as a two-man enterprise. But it rapidly took off and the co-directors now have a staff of nine across three teams.
While Mark and Ashley share a love of nature and gardens, their backgrounds couldn’t be less alike.
Mark is very much the action man who loves climbing and canoeing in the Lake District or skiing off-piste in the Alps. He
spent many summers as an outdoor pursuits instructor and worked in construction before moving into landscape gardening.
IT’S ALWAYS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT
Ashley, however, decided a change of direction was in order after a decade spent touring the world with theatre productions.
So, he turned his creative flair to garden design where his knowledge of traditional techniques and technology is used to dramatic effect.
With all its expertise and know-how, Wyre Gardens has it covered, whether it’s a cool green oasis, a woodland retreat or an easy-care patio and path area that you want.
Ashley said: “We are a local professional
company with a team, which is quite unusual in this profession, where you normally find sole traders. It means we can offer a complete service.”
The team also ensures that each project is carried out with full input from clients.
“It is always a collaborative effort,” explained Ashley. “I will go to meet a client, give advice and take measurements then come up with a 3D design. We may have the experience and knowledge, but people have their own ideas as they know how they are going to use the space.
“As people see the project developing they start to get enthusiastic about it all. They often need a lot of guidance about plants, but by the time we are done you can see the bees and the butterflies starting to settle immediately.”
This flair for designing and building gardens has attracted widespread attention. Not only have Mark and Ashley been called on to turn dreams of paradise into reality across an area stretching from Lancaster to Bolton, but they have become the stars of their own video show.
“We were contacted by Volkswagen who wanted to make a film of us for their Van Diaries feature across their social media,” laughs Ashley. “It was a bit of a surprise. We use a VW Caddy in the business, so that’s why they contacted us. It’s a ‘day in the life’ thing. It was interesting to do.”
The love of the great outdoors is very much reflected in the business, particularly in the use of names like Grizedale, Calder and Parkhead – all Wyre tributaries which join the river in Garstang. So for blue-chip gardening expertise with a truly local flavour call on Team Grizedale, Team Calder and Team Parkhead at Wyre Gardens. n

breakfast in the beautiful Lakeside Suite, which has floor to ceiling windows and panoramic views of a terrace, ornamental lake and countryside beyond.
“We also had access to a separate, private bar area for our guests to relax during the room turnarounds – this was the perfect place for a pianist and singer to perform after the ceremony and where our guests were entertained with table magic during the evening turnaround. We live an hour from Crow Wood so most of our guests stayed overnight – they were blown away by the quality of the hotel, the service and the standard of the food and drink – we received so many lovely comments about our choice of venue.

“I just love being a wedding planner, it’s such a special role where you get to be a part of creating unforgettable moments. I love meeting new couples and watching their wedding dreams come to life.”
How do you work with a couple to ensure you plan exactly the type of wedding day they want?
Working with a couple to plan their ideal wedding day involves effective communication, understanding their preferences and attention to detail. From the couple’s initial appointment right through to their wedding day we ensure they have a designated wedding planner as their point of contact for appointments or any phone calls or emails leading up to their big day. We’ll then be there on the day to ease any last-minute nerves. The key is to build a strong relationship with the couple and understand their vision.”
How do you identify and adapt to changing trends in the wedding industry?
“It’s important to stay up-to-date by following wedding blogs, attending industry events and connecting with industry professionals. I always keep an eye on social media for inspiration along with new ideas.
“Australia is renowned for staying ahead of the curve when it comes to wedding trends. Every few months I spend my time researching and gathering ideas!”
What is the best compliment you have been paid for your work?
“It’s challenging to identify a singular, standout compliment from one wedding, but the expressions of gratitude expressed through their speeches and the acceptance of thoughtful gifts from couples is an extremely heartfelt response.” n

WEDDING MAKEUP:
TEN TOP TIPS
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
LIPS THAT LAST
Lip liner: Use a lip liner to define your lips and prevent your lipstick from bleeding.
Long-wear lipstick: Choose a long-lasting, non-drying formula in your chosen shade and keep a touch-up kit handy.
SET YOUR MAKEUP
Create a flawless look on your wedding day by following these top ten makeup tips
Doing your own wedding makeup can be both exciting and daunting. Here are some top tips to help you achieve a flawless look:
START WITH A WELL-PREPARED CANVAS
Skincare routine: Begin a good skincare routine months before your wedding. Cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise regularly to keep your skin in top condition.
Primer: Use a primer that suits your skin type to ensure your makeup lasts all day and creates a smooth base.
CHOOSE LONG-LASTING, WATERPROOF PRODUCTS
Foundation: Opt for a long-wearing foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly. Consider a slightly higher coverage than usual, as you’ll want a flawless look in photos.
Waterproof mascara and eyeliner: Emotional moments are bound to happen, so use waterproof mascara and eyeliner to avoid smudging.
Trial runs: Practice your wedding makeup look several times before the big day. Experiment with different products and techniques until you’re satisfied.
Photograph your look: Take pictures in different lighting (natural / indoor) to see how the makeup translates on camera.
HIGHLIGHT AND CONTOUR THOUGHTFULLY
Subtle contouring: Use a matte bronzer to contour and add dimension to your face, but keep it subtle to avoid harsh lines.
Highlight: Apply a soft, glowing highlighter to the high points of your face (cheekbones, bridge of the nose and brow bone) for a radiant look.
EMPHASISE YOUR EYES
Eyeshadow primer: Use an eyeshadow primer to prevent creasing and ensure the colours stay vibrant all day.
False lashes: Consider using false lashes or individual lash extensions for added drama. Practice applying them beforehand to ensure you’re comfortable.
PERFECT YOUR BROWS
Fill and shape: Well-groomed brows frame your face. Use a brow pencil or powder to fill in any sparse areas and set them with a brow gel.
Setting spray: Lock in your look with a setting spray to keep your makeup in place throughout the day and night.
Translucent powder: Lightly dust a translucent powder over your T-zone to control shine, but avoid over-powdering to keep your makeup looking fresh.
CONSIDER THE SEASON AND VENUE
Seasonal adjustments: Adjust your makeup according to the season. For a summer wedding, keep it light and fresh, while for winter, you might opt for richer, more moisturising products.
Venue lighting: Take the venue’s lighting into account. Natural light is flattering, but if your venue has dim lighting, ensure your makeup is slightly more defined.
STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF
Your signature look: Don’t stray too far from your everyday style. You want to look like the best version of yourself, not someone else.
Comfort first: Make sure you’re comfortable with your makeup. If you’re not used to heavy makeup, keep it simple and elegant. By following these tips, you can confidently create a beautiful makeup look that enhances your natural beauty and holds up throughout your special day. n

MORE THAN JUST A GYM
Alma Stewart chats with CEO of Fylde Coast YMCA, Graham Oatridge, about the centres’ success and support services that have guaranteed the longevity of this international charity
Created from humble beginnings in nineteenth century London, 22-year-old draper, George Williams, joined together with a group of friends to organise the first Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), a refuge of Bible study and prayer for young men seeking escape from the hazards of life on the streets of London.
Now 180 years later, this charitable organisation has grown to serve more than 65 million people across 120 countries, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic background. Through gym membership, funds are reinvested into local communities to support the health and wellbeing of the area and supporting young people with housing and
Leading the helm across the Fylde Coast from the headquarters in St Annes, Graham describes his journey to the top job: “From my family home in Whitestake, I returned to the area around 20 years ago, settling in Ansdell. I was always interested in sport and have always been fairly active, so following my degree in Sports Science, I embarked on a career in health and wellbeing because it is so valuable to be active both physically and mentally.”
Graham worked within this sphere in local government and the NHS before starting his career with YMCA as part of a national health and wellbeing programme, commuting to London when necessary:
“The difference with YMCA is its vision and mission. It’s not just about keeping fit and active. It’s looking at opening up relationships and being part of a bigger network. YMCA encompasses mind, body and spirit, holistic health. Social relationships are so important
outdoor education.
to living a positive life so our centres are not just transactional,” he explained. Following the retirement of the previous CEO after 27 years in the role, Graham stepped into the top job in 2021, ensuring the work of YMCA continues to grow.
I EMBARKED ON A CAREER IN HEALTH AND WELLBEING BECAUSE IT IS SO VALUABLE TO BE ACTIVE BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY
Alongside YMCA’s extensive health and fitness programmes runs a young people’s housing and leisure offer with a host of positive success stories. Graham continued: “We are proud to support young people and help them with a fresh start. Many young people leave the family home for a number of reasons and we can help by providing a support worker and a place to live. We realise that it’s good foundations that contribute to helping people thrive. Without the basics such as jobs, banking, a place to stay, it’s very difficult to maintain physical and mental health.”
YMCA Fylde Coast began in 1922. During more than 100 years it has worked with a number of trusted partners and reflected societal changes. In the 1980s, support with housing was introduced and later, training and education for young people providing
help across the area where it was needed.
“We support young people regardless of circumstances,” Graham added. “Whether privately educated or living in deprivation, we can help because there are always challenges whoever you are. With a large aging population in the area, things are not always geared up for the young and so we aim to redress this balance in some way.”
Just some of the people that have turned things around with the help of YMCA include a young homeless person going on to win a community recognition award and a refugee whose parents had tragically been killed, who went on to graduate with a degree from the University of Central Lancashire. “We have a trauma-informed approach and our team recognise a number of behaviours so they can tailor support accordingly,” said Graham.
The business currently owns 60 units of accommodation around the Fylde Coast which vary from typical residential houses to blocks of flats which include supported accommodation. The organisation is also able to charge cheaper rents for their young people just starting out on the road to independence.
Last year, YMCA Fylde Coast welcomed 300,000 visits in Fylde (1,000,000 across its portfolio in Fylde, Wyre and Cumbria), 50,000 of those were school swimmers and turning over £8m. And as Graham highlights, many of the services he oversees are delivered by volunteers: “We are not shy
in asking people for support and although we commission paid project and consultancy work, we always need people who are willing to lend a hand. This could be within a host of areas such as fundraising, mentoring, coaching or, as we have greatly appreciated recently, some invaluable marketing work.”
ALONGSIDE YMCA’S EXTENSIVE HEALTH AND FITNESS PROGRAMMES RUNS A YOUNG PEOPLE’S HOUSING AND LEISURE OFFER WITH A HOST OF POSITIVE SUCCESS STORIES
Last winter, YMCA also hosted some warm spaces to provide free meals and drinks to support some of the older population in need of support. Young people can also learn so much about outdoor activities at YMCA Lakeside hidden within 100 acres of private woodland along the south-western shores of Lake Windermere.
As a centre of excellence in outdoor learning, YMCA have been operating there for more than 60 years. In that time, the team have helped more than a million young people to build a better future. n

FYLDE COAST RAMBLE
This issue, local writer and walking enthusiast, Steve Garrill, takes us on a late summer’s walk starting in Lytham
Lytham to Freckleton (7.6 miles)
1. Bear left through Sparrow Park and walk down Park Street. At the end cross over turning left and continue along Clifton Street. Immediately after Sainsbury’s turn right down Bath Road.
Apex Cycleworks does an excellent range of breakfasts from 8.30am.
2. Turn right and left over the zebra crossing and then bear diagonally left across Lytham Green to the lifeboat shop. Continue along the front to the end then right down the steps.
If there is a very high tide the sea comes right up to the promenade. The sea defences are not expected to be continued this far until 2035.
3. Go left around the sea wall. Climb up some steps, through a gate and along the cliff top path [if there is a high tide bear left at the end, turn right and then right again after the traffic lights.
As the road goes left go straight ahead through metal gates to the path which joins the cliff top path].
4. Go through a metal gate up to a T junction. Turn right onto Victory Boulevard, follow the road around turning left onto Dock Road. At the end turn right, across the bridge, up the steps on the right following the path on the bank. Bear left and left again back towards the road with the Marina on your right. Boundary Road would likely have been the route of the Lytham Dock Branch Railway.
5. Turn right on the footpath alongside Preston New Road then right over a stile. Follow the bank bearing left and continue alongside the Ribble Estuary. The Estuary is very important for wildlife.
6. The path bears left to a stile, then to the road. Turn right and right again along a driveway, past a house and then through a gate to regain the bank.
7. Along the bank you’ll reach another stile and pass in front of houses. Follow a surfaced track and over another stile. Pass through several fields. The path runs alongside the British Aerospace perimeter fence.
8. At the end of the perimeter fence cross a wooden bridge and continue to pass the indistinct path. You’ll pass a farm track rising up diagonally on the left, ignore this and continue ahead. Cross a stile and go over a sleeper boardwalk.
9. You’ll see a marker post pointing to a path on the left which climbs steeply. Go through a gap in the fence to reach a gate. Go ahead along a fenced path.
10. Cross over a roadway and turn right down a narrow hedged footway. Follow the path, reaching a concrete roadway. After a short while take the path to the left. You’ll enter into Bunker Street and The Ship public house is on the right. Excellent food!
11. At the end of Bunker Street turn left. Continue over a roundabout and pass Flapjacks café on your left. Bear left, the war memorial is on your right and then the bus stop.
Catch any bus, they all go to Lytham. n

THE LOWDOWN ON MARITAL INHERITANCE CLAIMS
Disputes concerning the distribution of a deceased person’s estate are increasing. John Lambe, a partner at Forbes Solicitors, delves into the complexities of marital inheritance claims
As the complexity of family finances and relationships grows, so too does the number of cases where spouses are pursuing financial claims against their deceased partner’s estate.
Reasons include:
(a) The increase in property prices over recent years mean that estates are worth more than they ever have been historically.
(b) Family life is becoming increasingly more complex than it has been previously. Second marriages and relationships have led to more diverse family set-ups. For example, a second spouse and children from a previous marriage are both likely
to expect to benefit from a Will, even extended families who live away and don’t have much contact with the testator.
(c) A greater expectation of being the beneficiary of an inheritance coupled with the economic climate means that relatives and dependants can feel disappointed with what they have inherited.
The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (“IPFDA”)
Losing a loved one is never easy, and it can be even more distressing if their Will does not provide for you as a surviving spouse. Thankfully, the IPFDA offers a crucial opportunity to ensure that you receive fair financial provision, helping you achieve the security you need during this difficult time. This Act allows the court to intervene and mandate ‘reasonable financial provision’ for surviving spouses. It’s a legal pathway to ensure that you aren’t left in a worse financial position than if the marriage had ended in divorce.
The court addresses two key questions:
(1) Did the deceased fail to make reasonable financial provision for their spouse?
(2) If not, what reasonable financial provision should be made for the spouse?
The court has the power to order a variety of financial remedies, such as lump sum payments, periodical payments, or property transfers.
When determining a claim, the court considers several factors:
• The applicant’s financial needs and resources.
• The needs of other applicants and beneficiaries.
• The size and nature of the estate.
• The deceased’s obligations to the claimant.
• Any special needs or disabilities of the claimant.
• Other relevant factors, including the conduct of the parties involved.
As a surviving spouse, you are in a strong position. The Act ensures that the financial provision you receive is not just limited to basic maintenance needs but reflects what is reasonable in all circumstances. This often results in a more comprehensive provision than what would have been achieved through a divorce.
A key component of the Act is the “divorce cross-check.” The court will consider what financial arrangement would have been made if the marriage had ended in divorce. This ensures that you are not disadvantaged by the fact that your spouse has passed away, rather than the marriage ending in separation.
The court typically begins by looking at matrimonial assets – those acquired during the marriage. For long-term marriages, even assets initially considered non-matrimonial might be included in the provision. The matrimonial home is treated with special consideration and is often deemed a jointly owned asset, even if legally registered solely in the deceased’s name. n

SOAP BOX DERBY IS BACK!
For a day of fun and fund-raising don’t miss the thrills and spills of Longridge Soap
Box Derby
Berry Lane in Longridge will be transformed once again on Sunday 15th September for the third running of the town’s annual Soap Box Derby.
Following the enormous success of last year’s race, event organiser Love Longridge is confident this year’s race will be the best yet. With 31 kart teams signed up, racing will start at 10am on the downhill track. Launched from an elevated start ramp, the teams will have to negotiate four jumps before the finish line, propelled only by gravity, brilliant engineering and sleek aerodynamics – okay we made the last two up!
The fun-filled, family-orientated event chimes with the fantastic community spirit in Longridge. In addition to the racing there will be street stalls, a food plaza and children’s
area. Last year, over 7,000 spectators attended and the organisers are hoping for the same level of support from residents and visitors this time around.
LAST YEAR £25,000 WAS RAISED FOR ST CATHERINE’S HOSPICE, WHICH DOES SUCH INCREDIBLE WORK SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY IN ITS HOUR OF GREATEST NEED
One of the major elements of the day is the contribution to charity raised from corporate sponsorship, kart fees and pitch fees. Event organiser Gary Ward from Love Longridge told Live Ribble Valley: “Local businesses have supported this initiative since day one. Last year £25,000 was raised for St Catherine’s Hospice, which does such incredible work supporting our community in its hour of greatest need. That would simply not be possible without the generous backing of
the town’s businesses. I must pay particular tribute to Raymond James Ribble Valley, which has been the event’s principal sponsor for the three years we have held the race.”
Speaking after last year’s event, John Chesworth of St Catherine’s Hospice commented: “We are so grateful to the people of Longridge for getting behind Soap Box Derby and St Catherine’s. The sum raised will pay the salary of a nursing assistant for one year. With only 19 beds in the Hospice we have to help people in a community setting. The funds raised from Soap Box help us to provide just that. We are delighted to be the race’s charity partner once again in 2024.”
Put 15th September in your diary now –it promises to be a great day in Longridge! n

TRAVELLING IS A WONDERFUL WAY FOR SENIORS TO EXPLORE NEW PLACES, VISIT FAMILY AND CREATE MEMORIES. HOWEVER, IT REQUIRES CAREFUL PLANNING
Managing director Gavin Preston said that while travelling as a senior can be a rewarding experience, sometimes people need a little extra support and help with preparation. So, he has come up with a list of handy tips to help older travellers get the most out of their vacation.
GAVIN’S TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
• Plan ahead: Booking flights and accommodation in advance can help secure better deals and preferred seating or room arrangements.
He said: “Travelling is a wonderful way for seniors to explore new places, visit family and create lasting memories. However, it requires careful planning to ensure safety and comfort. By following these tips and utilising the services of Right at Home Preston & South Ribble you can ensure a safe, comfortable and enjoyable journey.”
• Manage medications: Ensure you have enough of all your medications – keep them in their original containers or blister packs. Carry a copy of your prescriptions and a doctor’s note for any liquid medications.
• Stay hydrated and eat well: Carry a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of fluids. Pack healthy snacks like nuts, fruits and energy bars.
• Stay active: Long periods of sitting can increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Choose an aisle seat to make it easier to get up and move around.
• Travel insurance: This can cover unexpected medical expenses, cancellations and emergency evacuations. Ensure your policy covers pre-existing conditions and check if your health insurance is valid at your destination.
• Hire a travel companion: Companies like Right at Home Preston & South Ribble offer services where a caregiver can accompany you on your trip, providing support with mobility, medication management, personal care and daily activities. n Contact Right at Home on 01772 619106 to learn more about help with travel and respite care.

THE BIKE FOR ALL ROADS
With striking signature design, Ribble’s new Allroad is a smart blend of performance, endurance and comfort
Redefining the road bike? It’s the ambition Ribble set out to master when designing their all-new Allroad collection.
The culmination of an intensive three-year R&D and real-world testing process, including top-of-the-line advanced technology and manufacturing processes, the Allroad range is informed by Ribble’s flagship Ultra Road aero platform that has then been carefully optimised by its design team for a more relaxed all-day, multi-surface ride experience. The results speak for themselves: world-class aerodynamic performance and mixed terrain adventures, this is a bike that offers greater capabilities than any of its peers. It does it all without compromising on speed or comfort.
The Allroad is a bike for all roads. It’s this clever combination of performance, endurance and comfort that is the secret to the Allroad’s success.
THE ALLROAD RANGE IS INFORMED BY RIBBLE’S FLAGSHIP ULTRA ROAD AERO PLATFORM THAT HAS THEN BEEN CAREFULLY OPTIMISED BY ITS DESIGN TEAM
The range comprises of three models –Allroad SL, Allroad SL R and Allroad SL R e –with each sharing aerodynamically optimised tube profiles, new endurance specific geometry, improved tyre clearance of up to 38mm (SL R & SL R e models), multiple mounting points (including hidden mudguard mounts), multi-surface versatility and striking signature design livery.
The flagship Allroad SL R incorporates the aerodynamically advanced technology from the class-leading Ultra Road platform
to create a superlight machine designed to slice through the air with ultimate efficiency. Combined with a bespoke blend of carbon fibres, it is not only exceptionally lightweight at just 7.5kg but it’s as strong too.
Its brother, the Allroad SL R e features all of the performance advantages of its sibling, but harnesses the power of the MAHLE X20 drive system to offer optimal power assistance on even the steepest of climbs. It’s design is at the forefront of lightweight carbon e-road bikes, weighing a stealthy 11.8kg.
Finally, the Allroad SL utilises a full carbon frame that is designed to be both lightweight (8.8kg) and robust. A stunning machine suited for whatever challenges on the road ahead. n

A CAREER IN FOSTER CARE
Are you at a time in your life when you feel you have the time and space to give something back and make a positive difference? Could it be the year when you open your heart and home to a child in need with Child Action Northwest (CANW)?
Let us tell you about CANW...
Our team of foster carers provide a safe and secure place for children to live when they’re unable to live with their birth families.
CANW’s long and well-respected history of providing accommodation for vulnerable children spans more than a century after we started life as Blackburn Orphanage.
Foster carers with CANW are offered support at every stage of their journey, including financial and practical support, activities and support programmes for children, to ensure they can achieve their full potential.
We also provide training to encourage foster carers to develop and become the best possible carer they can be, while the guidance from a team of professionals ensures the emotional health and wellbeing needs of both children and carers are met.
Giving something back
We take great pride in providing a family feel to our fostering service and when we spoke to foster carers Mat and Lynn, they said: “The young person living with us at the moment said it doesn’t feel like they’re being fostered. To hear that confirms to us that we’ve made the right decision and made a positive impact on their life when they needed it most.”
The needs of the child and the fostering family are at the centre of everything we do at CANW, and we do all we can to help them and their foster family achieve their full potential.
We are a charity, we make no profit from our Foster Care Service.
Could you foster with CANW?
If we’ve made you consider fostering but you might be doubting your suitability, let us tell you there’s no such thing as an ideal foster carer.
It isn’t about whether you’re married, single, lesbian, gay, heterosexual, divorced or co-habiting. It isn’t about your race or religious beliefs. Our carers come from all walks of life, careers and backgrounds.
You don’t need specific skills to become a foster carer – your life experiences, parenting skills, values and interest in young people are just as important.
Similarly, there’s no such thing as a typical foster child – they come from lots of different backgrounds. Teenagers, children with disabilities and large sibling groups are very often those most in need of a caring, supportive environment to live in.
Some may have had a difficult upbringing, but all are looking for a foster carer with flexibility, a good sense of humour and the patience and strength to help them build and understand family relationships from the ground up.

IRRETRIEVABLE BREAKDOWN –DIVORCE IN THE BEST WAY
Sometimes, despite everyone’s best efforts, a marriage simply runs its course. But, thanks to current UK laws, a divorce doesn’t have to be the big fight it once was, explains Antonia Love, Partner and Head of Family Law at Farleys Solicitors
Irecently read about a divorce case which went viral on social media where a wife decided she wanted to divorce her husband because he would spend too long sitting in his car outside their home after getting back from work each day.
While there was more to the story, which involved the final straw being an emergency with their son, it got me thinking about the grounds for divorce which used to have to be cited when a couple were divorcing.
Some of the more unusual reasons couples
have given for filing for divorce include a wife finding out her spouse’s voting preference following an election, a wife deciding her spouse was just ‘too nice’, a husband losing a bet he’d made where he’d put his wife up as collateral and a wife filing for divorce from her husband after finding out he didn’t enjoy the film Frozen.
SOME OF THE MORE UNUSUAL REASONS COUPLES HAVE GIVEN FOR FILING FOR DIVORCE INCLUDE A WIFE FILING FOR DIVORCE FROM HER HUSBAND AFTER FINDING OUT HE DIDN’T ENJOY THE FILM FROZEN
Whatever the specific reason for divorce, previously, the petitioning spouse would need to select one of five grounds for divorce –adultery, unreasonable behaviour, separation for more than two years, separation for more than five years, or desertion.
Since April 2022, instead, separating couples are now required to provide a statement of irretrievable breakdown. This new law came into effect after years of campaigning for a
better way for couples to divorce without the need to apportion blame or create a conflict which sometimes wasn’t there to begin with. The no-fault divorce law allows you to cite simply an irretrievable breakdown of the relationship as the reason for divorce on the application.
So, whatever the final reason behind your decision to divorce, whether it’s an obscure ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’ or your relationship has simply run its course, no-fault divorce offers a better way to divorce, allowing couples to amicably part ways and move forward with as minimal conflict as possible. Please remember though, there will always be some aspects of divorce that risk a certain level of conflict, such as the process of dividing assets or managing arrangements relating to children but having the right advice and guidance from a specialist family law solicitor will help to keep things running smoothly and continue to minimise that conflict where possible. n
For advice on divorce and separation from a family law specialist, please contact the team at Farleys on 01254 368040, email: info@farleys.com, or visit our website for more information: farleys.com

Blackpool and The Fylde College continues to deliver on T level success
Blackpool and The Fylde College, one of the largest providers of T Levels, has hailed its partnerships with employers as one of the key factors in its success, as it celebrates its third year of T Level results.
This year the overall pass rate for T Level students who studied at the college was 90 per cent – above the national average for the third year in a row.
Fifty-nine per cent achieved a Merit or above (equivalent to three B grades at A Level) overall and several T level courses achieved a 100 per cent pass rate including Education and Early Years, Health, Digital Support Services, Management and Administration, Engineering and Manufacturing (Manufacturing, Processes and Control), and Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction.
Eleven students received a Distinction for their studies, the highest grade possible, an increase on the 2023 results.
As part of their courses, students carry out a 315-hour work placement, representing 20 per cent of their T Level.
The college, which offers the broadest range of subjects locally, managed to secure high quality work placements for its T level students, leveraging longstanding relationships with local, regional and national employers. This year students have worked for, among others, national organisations like the DWP, NHS and VINCI Building as well as local primary schools, nurseries and digital businesses.
Every student already has plans for the future, with next destinations almost equally split between employment, apprenticeships and higher education.
Alun Francis OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Blackpool and The Fylde College, who has just celebrated his one-year anniversary with the college said: “These results are amazing and demonstrate the hard work and commitment of the college’s students, professional tutors and employerpartners. Working together enables us to maximise the positive impact of the programme for all involved and we are incredibly proud of what this year’s students achieved.
Collectively we are demonstrating that T Levels can be, and in our case certainly are, highly effective at creating the next generation of skilled employees for industry.”
Construction management company VINCI Building offered placements to T Level students, who worked on the new £100m Blackpool Civil Service Hub development. The business has since helped some of the students gain employment following their courses.
Hannah Bailey, Social Value Manager, said: “T Level students who spend their work placement with us are given responsibilities and treated with the same respect as an employee. This gives them the technical experience on real-life projects but also the softer skills to enable them to become work ready, such as communication skills and how to behave in the workplace.
Cordelia Waterland-Jones, who received a distinction for her T Level cyber security and networking, was the only girl on her course, but describes her group as being like a family.
She said: “My results are unbelievable – a distinction is the dream! The course has been perfect for me because it’s entirely focused on computing. I’m a visual learner – I like to be hands-on –so the industry placement sold it to me. “I loved the industry placement. I got to work for my dream employer and be a part of lots of different departments, learning networking and so many other computer skills.
“I want to be a cyber security analyst for the company that I did my placement with, and I start my apprenticeship with them in September so I am on the right path.”
Cordelia’s mum, Claire WaterlandJones, added: “As parents you normally push for A-Levels, but it wouldn’t have suited Cordelia – she would have given up. Having T-Levels here as an option, the style of course, is exactly what she needed and she has done incredibly well.”
Hollie Worsley, 18, studied the T Level Health (NHS Future Talent Programme), gaining a merit, and is now embarking on an apprenticeship to become a paramedic. When she was just 11, Hollie calmly took the phone from her mum when on a 999 call and clearly relayed information to the call handler after her grandad had a fall.
She spent her placement doing 12-hour shifts at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, with time on the respiratory and cardiac wards followed by a stint with the ambulance service.
Hollie said: “The placement made me want to be a paramedic even more than before. Being able to get the experience and carry out tasks but also learn from the medical staff and paramedics was really valuable. I’d definitely recommend a T Level for anyone wanting to join the medical profession.”

NEW DIGITAL SUITE
Preston College is receiving a £1.4m transformation as work begins on a new centre at the college, aiming to help create the ‘next generation of digital experts’. The centre will provide T-level courses in digital and creative subjects including media production, games design and accounting. It will be the home for existing digital courses and, with its digital suites sitting alongside design and creative studios, it will allow the college to further develop new exciting courses in this growing field of opportunity. Unique artwork is being commissioned for several areas by local Preston-based artist, Dave Rob.
BRIGHT FUTURES AHEAD
There were celebrations at Bolton School in both the Boys’ and Girls’ Division Great Halls as Year 13 collected their A-Level grades. One quarter came away with all A* or A grades, and two thirds of students received the grades of A*, A or B needed for the best universities. The pass rate was 99 per cent. Harriet Dickens is heading to the US on a water polo scholarship at the University of Michigan. David Chow, who received one A* and two A grades, is excited to start a four-year course in Animation at Gobelins, Paris: the world’s leading school for animation.

“Having access to these lessons was fantastic! Without the Stonyhurst Music Scholarship I would never have been able to keep all three going,” says Dominic, who soon went on to achieve Grade 8 in all three disciplines as well as gaining experience in playing with various ensembles during his time at the College.
Director of Music Andrew Henderson recalls Dominic as a Sixth Former: “He was one of the most promising musicians,” he says. “Music is not about how fast you can play a piece, it’s not about the notes it’s about the music and the communication, and by the time Dominic had reached Grade 8, he really understood this. Dominic demonstrated a willingness to learn and more importantly, to enjoy the music.”
SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS
Stonyhurst’s Scholarship Programme is a huge success, fast-tracking pupils in the disciplines at which they excel and enjoy
Scholarships at Stonyhurst are among the College’s biggest success stories. Each year they are awarded at various entry levels to those pupils that display outstanding talent in specific areas.
From academia, science, sport, art and music, the pupils who benefit from the Stonyhurst Scholarships Programme have gone out into the world to showcase their individual expertise, many of whom have worked at the top of their industry.
More recently Stonyhurst Music Scholar, Dominic Sutton, who graduated from York University two years ago, has been involved in composing music for films, TV and gaming projects.
Having gained considerable musical experience as a young pupil at Ampleforth College in York, Dominic applied for a scholarship at Stonyhurst when he was in Year 9: “When I came to Stonyhurst I didn’t even know I was auditioning!” he recalls.
Demonstrating his ability to adapt to various musical disciplines, he sang, played
the piano, trumpet and bassoon: “It was a classical repertoire,” says Dominic, who having been successful in his application,
DOMINIC

secured a Music Scholarship for the rest of his five-year studies at Stonyhurst, offering him a bespoke pathway including additional tuition in singing, trumpet, piano and participation in (and leadership of) relevant ensembles.
Stonyhurst will be hosting a Scholarship Week this November, with applications closing on 6th October. The scholarship process will feature a revised format, offering a more relaxed audition experience for prospective scholars. Scan the QR code for more information.
Recalling Great Academies – the annual end-of-year concert at Stonyhurst, Mr Henderson said: “It is always quite a lively event as all the pupils are in high spirits. Dominic got involved singing ‘Time to Say Goodbye’. It was a theatrical performance and as soon as he started to sing the hall fell silent – it was a real tear-jerker!”
Since leaving Stonyhurst and graduating, Dominic has enjoyed a gap year in New Zealand and on his return is taking steps into the world of freelance composing, having recently worked for a Los Angeles director on a musical score for a short film: “That is the direction I want to take and while it’s a very competitive industry, I am enjoying it tremendously,” he says.
“If it wasn’t for the Stonyhurst Music Scholarship I don’t think I would have kept up the same level of interest in music, nor would I have made the lifelong friends I made there. My time at Stonyhurst was brilliant!” n

At the start of the new academic year, Westholme is set to welcome a new Principal who will be bringing his world-class, educational experience to the school.
Mr Paul Taylor joins Westholme following his time as Head of Kings’ School Al Barsha in Dubai – an experience he describes as: “A wonderful opportunity. We had 98 different nationalities. Dubai is a great melting pot of cultures and Kings’ is a microcosm of that society.”
Born and bred in Yorkshire, Mr Taylor’s father was originally from Burnley: “I get there when I can – the Clarets are in my blood!”
Delighted to be returning to Lancashire, Mr Taylor is thrilled to be joining historic Westholme, which recently celebrated its centenary year: “I am thrilled, humbled and privileged. Principals are temporary guardians and just a small part of the long history of a great school like Westholme.
WORLD CLASS EDUCATION
Coming from the prestigious Kings’ School in Dubai, Mr Paul Taylor has been named as the new Principal of Westholme, heralding a new chapter in the school’s distinguished 100-year history
“I knew that Westholme was a warm and welcoming, tight-knit family community and it certainly doesn’t disappoint! I also knew it was very ambitious for every individual child.”
LEADERS RECOGNISE THAT IT IS THEIR JOB TO ENSURE THE SCHOOL OFFERS WORLD CLASS OPPORTUNITIES AND DEVELOP A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY IN ITS STUDENTS
With many years of teaching experience, and 14 years in senior leadership roles, this position will be his third headship. Mr Taylor has clear ideas on what makes a good school – and a great leader. He says schools like Westholme get three things right:
• “Firstly, they recognise that the world that our pupils enter after school is incredibly exciting and full of wonderful opportunities, but it is also increasingly challenging and competitive. Westholme
ensures that pupils have the 21st century essential skills required to thrive in that world.
• “Secondly, great schools foster a sense of moral and social responsibility for all those around us. Westholme has always developed a sense of purpose in the children so that they think and act beyond their own individual development.
• “Thirdly, great schools take every individual child for who they are, develop their passions, build on their strengths and work on their weaknesses. There has never been such a thing as a ‘typical’ Westholme product and there won’t be in my time either! Leaders recognise that it is their job to ensure the school offers world class opportunities and develops a sense of responsibility in its students.”
Mr Taylor began his teaching career teaching politics at Bishop’s Stortford High School in Hertfordshire before moving back to become Head of Politics at St Peter’s, York: “I’ve been studying politics since 1992 – the
last time we had a British general election and an American presidential election in the same year. All I ever wanted to do was teach politics,” he explains.
“There isn’t a better subject to teach as it is ‘out there’, always influencing and always changing. My time in the classroom has seen some seismic events from Clinton’s impeachment to 9/11, from the banking crisis to the impact of a once-in-a-century pandemic. Young people may not like politicians, but they do know the importance of politics.”
WESTHOLME ENSURES THAT PUPILS HAVE THE 21ST CENTURY ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO THRIVE IN THE WORLD
With a broad interest in sport, alongside football Mr Taylor enjoys cricket, having celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary travelling to India with his wife Kirstie, to watch England in the cricket World Cup: “Sport has played a huge part in my life, though I’m limited to more sedate pastimes now like running and golf. My last game of football was for Lytham Veterans FC back in 2014. As with all the teams I’ve played in, I wasn’t the best player by any means, but I loved every minute.
“Cricket is my other passion, but I have no desire to bring up the Roses rivalry right now!”
Keen to begin his tenure at Westholme, Mr Taylor is looking forward to meeting and forging strong working relationships with staff and parents. He is also impressed with the school’s academic achievements, pupils’ ambitious university destinations and students’ development as they go out into the wider world to forge individual careers.
“The staff at Westholme are incredibly committed and the parents so loyal and supportive. Westholme is also set in a beautiful part of the world, an environment it takes advantage of when providing extensive learning opportunities outside the classroom,” adds Mr Taylor, whose daughter Megan will be joining the INSPIRED Sixth Form at Westholme to study Geography, Psychology and Politics.
With his extensive worldwide teaching experience, will he be making any changes when he begins his time as Principal of Westholme?
“My job is to leave the school in an even better place than it is now. If there are any changes, I’m sure it will be a case of evolution not revolution!” n
Steeped in history and with a wonderful sense of community, the future is looking bright for Archbishop Temple Church of England High School, writes Meena McDonald
Ivan Catlow, the Headteacher at Archbishop Temple Church of England High School believes all pupils have the opportunity to reach their full potential: “Every child at Archbishop Temple Church of England High School has a sense of belonging and community,” he says.
Housed in a Grade II listed building which is steeped in richness and individuality, Archbishop Temple was founded in 1963 and designed by architect Keith Scott who was also responsible for designing the iconic Preston bus station.
The school’s focus is on enabling pupils to achieve their best through a well-crafted ‘curriculum driven by knowledge’ structure, allowing pupils to develop their capabilities and progress much further than they might anticipate.
EVERY CHILD AT ARCHBISHOP TEMPLE CHURCH OF ENGLAND HIGH SCHOOL HAS A SENSE OF BELONGING AND COMMUNITY
A traditional school structure would be to group children into sets based on pure results. However, Archbishop Temple does things a little differently. They take a much broader view of each pupil and group them based on wider attributes and create personalised groups which considers aspects such as drivers and relationships.
This model is based on research and all 48 teachers at the school are trained in the
‘science of learning’ and utilise this knowledge to create the most conducive learning environment for each pupil. The teachers are immersed in learning as well as teaching and share best practice on a weekly basis.
To enhance the environment further, the school has recently secured £9.2 million funding which will be used to build a brand new three-storey carbon neutral building as well as refurbishing the existing buildings.
With the addition of the extensive new building, the school will accommodate 55 extra children in each year group from September 2024. As a highly desirable and successful school with long waiting lists, these additional places will be welcomed by the community.
The enrichment for Archbishop pupils
doesn’t stop there. There are considerable opportunities for them to go on trips throughout the UK as well as further afield such as France, New York, Italy and Iceland.
‘Temple Time’ is another tremendous success for the school, where pupils constructively use the first 30 minutes of form time each day focusing on specific development topics such as British values and safeguarding.
With the amazing green space the school has, they are also planning to create a mini farm area where pupils can have some peace and quiet and enjoy the local rabbits, deer, foxes and general wildlife.
It isn’t just the building that holds such cultural capital for the school, it is also the original name of the school, which was William Temple.
Archbishop William Temple was one of the great men of the 20th century, hugely influential in education and social welfare, with values which still hold true to the school today. In acknowledgment of this rich history and the values of the school,
THERE ARE CONSIDERABLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEM TO GO ON TRIPS THROUGHOUT THE UK AS WELL AS FURTHER AFIELD SUCH AS FRANCE, NEW YORK, ITALY AND ICELAND
it celebrates William Temple Day on his birthday in October each year.
If you’d like to get a sense of the values and community spirit at Archbishop Temple, why not pop along and see for yourself? The doors are always open to parents and the wider community. n

THURSDAY 10th October 2024 4pm to 7pm
I think now with a repertoire of five gins, three vodkas, a rum, various limited edition bottles and many successful events, we can say Mark’s boss was certainly on to something!
With a background in sales, marketing and product creation, Mark knew how important it was for their debut gin to not only taste good, but look good too, as he so rightly puts it: “No one would buy a blank bottle.”
Lancashire lad Mark Long talks about how Brindle Distillery and the award-winning Cuckoo Gin came to be, through the perfect balance of entrepreneurial spirit and a dash of cautious risk-taking, writes Lucy Bale
The idea for Brindle Distillery was discussed over a family dinner in 2016 with Mark Long, his wife Liz and her parents Gerard and Cath Singleton, who run Holmes Farm in Brindle. Having been in the family for over 100 years, diversifying and making the most of the ‘gin boom’ on the farm seemed like a sensible risk to take. But what made Mark the perfect fit for the task? I caught up with him to find out more about his background and the driving force behind the success of the distillery.
Having spent nearly a decade during the formative years of his career working for one of the largest food producers in the UK, Mark knows a thing or two about what customers want and how to position a product. Following the family dinner discussion, Mark had a decision to make as to whether to play it safe in the company he was successfully developing or take the risk and create something new. He recalls his boss at the time, as he wished him farewell, saying: “Fortune favours the brave.”
HE RECALLS HIS BOSS AT THE TIME, AS HE WISHED HIM FAREWELL, SAYING: ‘FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE!’
A chance meeting involving Liz who was on a business course, led to a partnership with Graham Walker of Design by Gray, who still creates their branding to this day, nearly eight years later. Graham creatively brought to life Mark’s vision of Cuckoo’s Signature Gin – next came the pertinent task of distilling.
Whilst still juggling a full-time job, Mark made his way around the country learning his trade from distilleries across the UK. It took a number of attempts and a good few
questions before they perfected what is now their award-winning Cuckoo Signature gin in 2017. A pitch at Booths with his fatherin-law Gerard then successfully secured six months exclusivity before the retailer had even tasted the gin, as they bought into the story behind the product.
The brand grew quickly, with their Cuckoo Spiced Gin launching in the winter of 2017, a few months after their debut gin launched. Further product development was also driven by taste trends in the category and gaps in the market, as well as many personal influences from Mark.
SOME CHAP ON SCREEN SHOUTED OUT SUPERNOVA, BECAUSE IT TASTED LIKE AN EXPLOSION OF GRAPEFRUIT
My two favourite stories are those behind Cuckoo’s Solace and Supernova gin. The aptly named Solace, to find comfort in times of distress, was created following Mark’s wife Liz’s recovery from cancer in early 2019. It’s a Mediterranean gin incorporating some of Mark’s favourite flavours, including olive which is also an ode to their daughter of the same name. The charity launch of this gin raised over £26,000, a feat the team feel so incredibly proud of! The second being the story behind Supernova. In true Cuckoo style, the distillery team diversified during the pandemic and hosted live gin tastings over Zoom. After delivering a batch of unnamed gin to hundreds of enthusiasts dialling in for the Zoom session, Mark asked for inspiration for the name – sticking with the ‘S’ theme. Mark recalls: “Some chap on screen shouted out Supernova, because it tasted like an explosion of grapefruit!” Thus, Cuckoo Supernova was born!
These stories perfectly reflect Mark’s attention to his customers, market trends, product and importantly, the personal touches that sets Cuckoo apart from the rest of the pack.
Just in case their library of spirits wasn’t enough to keep Mark and the team busy, they have worked incredibly hard to grow the brand beyond the bottles. Hospitality felt like the natural next step for Mark, going back to his roots running a kitchen and bar during his time at university. What started off as a post on Facebook, inviting people down to enjoy a gin at the distillery, organically evolved into what is now a fully stocked bar in collaboration with other
local suppliers such as Rivington Brew Co and The Whalley Wine Shop. In addition to this, the team hosts various experiences from cocktail masterclasses to gin-making workshops. Recently, they hosted their second Nestival – a sell-out festival celebrating live music, food and of course, Cuckoo gin! The success of their events means exciting things are on the horizon, growing the bar and building a purpose-built food court next year.
When speaking about his biggest achievements, Mark tells me how proud he is of the team. Employing local people and giving them opportunities to grow is something he is truly passionate about, learning from his past experience as to what kind of leader he wants to be. It’s this investment in his team that has helped
grow the brand, making them a part of the Cuckoo family who want to see its success.
The saying goes, ‘Don’t work with family,’ but Mark and the extended Brindle family have truly proved this theory wrong!
Hearing first-hand the story of how a family chat (indubitably over a G&T) has organically grown into the Cuckoo brand, offering experiences and opportunities to develop local talent is inspiring and I, for one, look forward to seeing what’s to come in the future for Brindle Distillery! n
ASSURANCE & INSURANCE…
An all-electric MINI not only assures an adventurous ride, it also offers significant savings especially when free insurance is a possibility too, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin
Car insurance has gone through the sun-roof! And those in the know, reckon there is more chance of Manchester City being relegated this season than prices dropping anytime soon.
So, when a top car manufacturer announces FREE fully comprehensive insurance for a full year, it may just sound too good to be true.
But listen up – that is precisely what is on offer for anyone who buys a new, all-electric MINI, before the end of 2024*
Driving an all-electric MINI already affords significant savings (more than £1,600 against a fuel-powered motor), but when you factor in this insurance deal, the figure then soars comfortably north of £2,000.
But we’ll park the economic advantages for a moment and take a closer look at the all-electric MINI range.
And what an eye-catching range it is too, whether you choose the Cooper (three-door Hatch) or the Countryman (five-door SUV) or if you prefer, you can wait for the Aceman (five-door Crossover) which is due for launch later this year.
The MINI is widely regarded as one of our greatest inventions and it has earned that
distinction through a multitude of reasons.
Instantly recognisable – although somewhat bigger than the early models – the all-electric MINIs are pitch perfect for the electric era.
They will always be funky, stand-out motors – cars for everyone, and every need, and if you enjoy driving, then look no further.
For the purpose of statistics (and those allimportant ‘charging’ and ‘range’ questions) let’s examine the Countryman.
Charging just couldn’t be easier, whether at home, work on en route.
A home charger with a flexible fast-charge cable is quick, efficient and compatible with both domestic and industrial power sockets. On the go, there are 39,000 charge points at 14,000 EV charge stations around the UK.
The wonderful MINI app will guide you to the nearest one via the navigation system. Once there, you’ll be relieved to learn that to go from 10 per cent to 80 per cent charge takes just half-an-hour.
Fully-charged, the Countryman will reach a range of 287 miles and there is plenty you can do to maximise battery life, for example, avoid quick acceleration and hard braking.
But that doesn’t mean compromising on the fun of driving – an all-electric MINI is all about fun.
Still with that famous go-kart feel, the handling, particularly around bends and corners, is superb, and parking a dream.
FULLY-CHARGED,
THE COUNTRYMAN WILL REACH A RANGE OF 287 MILES AND THERE IS PLENTY YOU CAN DO TO MAXIMISE BATTERY LIFE
The lower centre-of-gravity, due to the battery placement, enhances driving dynamics and the car really grips the road irrespective of the condition of the surface.
Is it powerful? Does 0-62 mph in under six seconds and a top speed of 111 mph answer that?
From any angle, it’s a MINI, but one with a fresh face and an emphasis on sustainability. The chrome has gone, replaced by secondary
aluminium, to give the vehicle an even more vibrant exterior.
Ultra-modern and super simplistic, embodying maximum driving pleasure and minimum footprint, it is crammed with innovative digital technology.
At the heart of the digital centre is a state-of-the-art 240mm circular OLED screen. It serves as an instrument cluster and your onboard hub for infotainment and assistance. The stunning circular geometry is also a world first.
This presents just about everything you could possibly need in terms of intuitive operation and personalisation options.
The optional MINI Connected Package allows access to an ever-growing range of
practical features and entertaining apps, including gaming, music and video streaming.
And when it comes to all those need-to-know situations, like weather conditions, traffic updates or maybe just a chit-chat, then simply use your voice to bring on board the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant. Android and Apple compatible, it is available via a pushto-talk button on the steering wheel, or by saying the greeting: “Hey MINI”.
Fancy a laugh? It’ll even tell you a joke!
Acoustics are top drawer with the Harman Kardon (optional) surround sound system with 10 speakers and you can stream into Spotify or Amazon Music with minimum fuss.
But there are also times (especially as you get a touch older) when you simply want to turn off from everything and seek a little peace. Well, the all-electric MINIs are nothing if not quiet. Enjoy the silence.
As for peace of mind, you’ll find a raft of assistance systems including Parking Assistant, Rear View Camera, Blind Spot Detection and Dynamic Cruise Control. The list is endless
THE ALL-ELECTRIC MINIS ARE FRIENDLY, FUN AND FEARLESS COMPANIONS FOR THE ECO-CONSCIOUS DRIVER
and help is readily on hand.
The all-electric MINIs are friendly, fun and fearless companions for the eco-conscious driver who likes to enjoy cost savings along the way.
With MINI you can always be assured –now you can be insured too. n

GROUNDS FOR PERFECTION
Former Westlife bodyguard, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here contestant and Love Island winner Fran Cosgrave, tells Alma Stewart about his change in career and big plans for his newest venture, Concrete Coffee
If Fran’s energy and passion in a conversation is anything to go by, then it’s certain that Concrete Coffee is going places. In fact, the whole operation is literally full of beans.
The Concrete Coffee shop was launched around a year ago as part of YourGym in Lytham. Fran’s journey into the coffee industry has been a whirlwind: “I became teetotal about 13 years ago and developed a real passion for coffee. No matter where I was in the world, the first thing I would do is drop my bags at the hotel and find the nearest coffee shop. But despite sampling hundreds if not thousands of different blends from all over the globe, I could never find the perfect one,” Fran explains. But with a brand-new second shop just opened in Blackpool’s Abingdon Market, that perfect blend has been discovered.
THE PROCESS OF MIXING DIFFERENT BEANS AND BLENDS WAS SO ENJOYABLE
Rewind more than 25 years and Fran, in his native Dublin, starts his career in security: “My dad had done a bit of security work and I found that I had a flair for it and as a fast and solid communicator, I was able to use these skills to diffuse very tense situations.” Fran went on to run the security for several large venues across Ireland and in the late nineties, moved to the UK working at Liverpool’s Cream nightclub alongside one of the UK’s
well-known DJs, Paul Oakenfold, and later moving down to London to run security for Paul’s Big B Institute. It was in his security roles that Fran met leading Irish promoter John Reynolds, who worked closely with Louis Walsh, and from this, became a bodyguard for boy band Westlife: “It was an amazing experience,” remembers Fran, “and I did two world tours with them before returning to London to open a new venue.”
Fran went on achieve fame through a number of TV programmes and travelled the world as a DJ and music producer for many years. He came to the Fylde DJing for the Syndicate nightclub in Blackpool. There, he met his partner, Elle, and when she fell pregnant, he gave up commuting between London and Liverpool to settle in Lytham, where Elle grew up: “I was reluctant to move here at first. I had been very used to city living and wasn’t sure about the slower pace of life. But on the second day after moving here, I walked from Fairhaven to the windmill on The Green and realised it was a special place and I fell in love with it.”
As with many things, the global pandemic changed everything. Fran explains: “In 2019 I was travelling all over the world. I had just performed in Mexico City and was booked for a tour of China in January 2020 – then the country shut down. Suddenly we could no longer travel as this went on and on, I faced challenge after challenge, I started brewing coffee at home – I absolutely loved it. The process of mixing different beans and blends was so enjoyable. Eventually when all the restrictions were lifted, I was at Creamfields festival with a friend from Germany who was performing there. He brought me some samples from his own roastery in Mannheim, Germany.
“I tried the samples the next day and was literally blown away – this was the exact taste and experience I was looking for. The very next day I contacted him and said I wanted to bring this coffee to the UK, Ireland and then the world. Over several months of calls, emails and negotiations, I flew to Germany to visit the roastery and we signed our deal, becoming partners.” Concrete Coffee Roasters was founded in
2018 by Florian Fischer and David Zwilling. César is their chief roaster and coffee is a passion for this native Colombian. He has known the diverse world of coffee since he was 10 years-old learning his expert skills from his father creating full, smooth flavours, no bitter aftertaste and no acid reflux. Fran enjoyed two blends, in particular: The Balanced Blend 50/50 Composition: 50 per cent Arabica / 50 per cent Robusta and the Fuego Composition: 20 per cent Arabica / 80 per cent Robusta.
I TRIED THE SAMPLES THE NEXT DAY AND WAS LITERALLY BLOWN AWAY –THIS WAS THE EXACT TASTE AND EXPERIENCE I WAS LOOKING FOR
“I had been using the gym for a long time and was so excited about the coffee that the owners agreed it would be a great idea to extend and include the first UK Concrete Coffee café. Some very cool people have been in touch and offered to promote us, so watch this space.”
Concrete Coffee is open to the general public along with members of the gym and offers a range of delicious treats such as gourmet waffles, cakes, bakes and fresh fruit with hot chocolate. Fran also runs a number of coffee events that include cars and motorbikes.
“I’m really immersed in the business right now. We have plans to expand initially in the North West and hopefully to Dublin. I would also love to get into the wholesale arena. Luckily, opportunities are presenting themselves and I am enjoying building up a real community. The business means I can be at home much more instead of being away all the time, though I’m not sure the family think it’s that great!” n

(1962, 1963) Led Zeppelin (1971), Genesis (1971) and David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars (1972).
The Public Hall closed in March 1973 and lay unused and empty. Twenty years later, the building was remodelled behind the original Grade II listed facade and re-opened as the Corn Exchange pub in 1993 and currently, as 1842.
Construction on the new Guild Hall, on Lancaster Road, began in 1969. Not only was it to house two theatres, the ground floor level was to contain the Guild Hall Arcade shopping complex. This was linked to the bus station by a subway which has since been filled in. An enclosed footbridge remains from the bus station car park that leads directly into the venue’s upper foyer.
BACK FROM THE BRINK
Following a few turbulent years, Preston’s iconic Guild Hall will be partially open for the next six months to host a number of events. Alma Stewart looks at its 51-year history
The Guild Hall is an iconic landmark in the centre of Preston and many Prestonians will have fond memories across the years of events such as concerts, plays, graduations, balls, exhibitions and the many popular shops within its 1970s Brutalist architecture.
In the Seventies, the Guild Hall was commissioned to replace Preston’s original Public Hall, formally a corn exchange, on Fleet Street commissioned by the mayor, Nicholas Grimshaw in 1822. Corn exchanges
fell out of use during the Great Depression of British Agriculture from 1873. Preston’s then mayor, Edmund Birley, commissioned the building to become a public hall to house major events.
The building was repurposed as the Public Hall between 1881 and 1882. A hall and galleries were created and could hold 3,300 visitors. At the time, the Public Hall was Preston’s premier entertainment venue and hosted performances by the biggest music artists of the day such as The Beatles
The new Preston bus station opened in 1969. The new Guild Hall, in the similar Brutalist style to the bus station, was designed by Robert Matthew and Johnson Marshall. It was due to be ready for the Preston Guild celebrations of 1972 but because of various delays including a builders’ strike, it officially opened in 1973. The complex was created with two venues – The Grand Hall which holds around 2,034 people and the Charter Theatre which holds around 780 people.
The first major music concert was held on 9th January 1973. The band Fumble were support to David Bowie who had asked for the auditorium windows to be blacked out to enhance the show’s effects. This was followed on 30th January by a performance by Led Zeppelin.
Other notable music artists to perform here include Elton John (1973, 1976, 1979), Queen (1974, 1975), Bing Crosby (1977), The Jackson 5 (1979), Meatloaf (1986), The Smiths (1986), The Stone Roses (1989), Van Morrison (1990, 1992), Blondie (2003) and McFly (2007).
The Guild Hall also hosted various snooker championships from 1978 and the University of Central Lancashire also held graduation ceremonies here for many years. The annual pantomimes were always popular as was the variety of shows and concerts that filled the extensive programmes.
But in the 2010s as austerity began to bite, owners Preston City Council struggled with the huge running costs of such a vast building.
In July 2014, the Guild Hall was sold to local businessman Simon Rigby but the
venue closed in May 2019 and in June 2019 the business placed into administration and closed.
Following a legal case, the venue came back under council ownership in 2023. Plans were made to reopen the theatre with the first event to be the Preston Weekender. However, in September of last year, it is believed that RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) is present in the roof panels of the Grand Hall and Charter Theatre. Following national guidance and pending a thorough investigation by specialist structural engineers, both venues remained closed and secured.
However, good news was announced recently that the revitalised foyer space, now named The Guild Lounge, will be host to a diverse winter programme of events running from October 2024 through to March 2025.
THE GUILD LOUNGE, WILL BE HOST TO A DIVERSE WINTER PROGRAMME OF EVENTS
Making the change from a bar space to a studio theatre, The Guild Lounge will host a variety of events, including live music performances from well-known artists, classical music concerts, fringe theatre productions, a regular comedy club, familyfriendly entertainment, festive shows, community performances, and unique one-off events.
Councillor Martyn Rawlinson, Cabinet Member for Resources and Deputy Leader of Preston City Council, said: “The opening of The Guild Lounge is a momentous occasion for Preston. This venue not only breathes new life into our city’s entertainment offer but also provides a space for local artists and performers.
“We are committed to supporting the arts and listening to the needs of the community, and The Guild Lounge is a testament to that dedication. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this exciting new chapter for Preston.”
As for the long-term future of the Guild Hall, nobody is sure, but let’s hope it can once again enjoy its glory days providing first-class entertainment in the heart of the city on a permanent basis. n
The programme kicks off on 3rd October with the Disco Inferno show.
