Magazines Editor Welcome to issue 102 and autumn in Preston and the Fylde. The nights are really drawing in, the Blackpool Illuminations are lit and Strictly Come Dancing is back on the TV; so we are hurtling towards the end of the year. This magazine we are starting to think about the festive season…its not that far away and after the cancelled plans of last year I’m filling up my diary with trips to the pantomime, nights out with my friends and diners with my family. Our resident ‘fashionista’, Sam Martin, has given me some ideas on the clothes I should be wearing and what’s fashionable (page 46). Flu season is upon us and who know how that’s going to play out this year? We are already hearing that the NHS is under extreme pressure and there is a long winter ahead of us. If you are eligible to get a flu jab, then the NHS are asking that you get booked in and have your jab as soon as possible (page 74). Its also firework season. The Mayor of Preston held a light parade and firework display in the city last month. Despite the very wet weather the event was a huge hit and a fitting tribute to the Covid Key Workers (page 82). Many thanks to Visit Blackpool for this issues beautiful front cover. The image was taken as part of the World Firework Championships which were back with a bang this year. The event runs on select dates through September and October, and gathers together the crème de la crème of the worlds firework elite. The final celebratory display of the season is held on Saturday 23rd October in front of The Blackpool Tower over the beach. Stay cosy this autumn and enjoy the change in the season. Verified Customer Feedback

A contemporary kitchen for a period property When Sue bought a Victorian property in Rochdale she embarked on an ambitious renovation, knocking walls down to create an open-plan area to house a new, contemporary kitchen. Keen to embrace the features of the traditional property, her aim throughout was to contrast old and new with a modern kitchen. Needing a kitchen company that could advise on the use of the space and be design-led, she turned to Paul Harrington at Kitchen Design Centre who interpreted the brief perfectly and gave invaluable advice to change the long, thin kitchen in to a large, contemporary open-plan one. As a keen Pinterest user, Sue created several design boards and had an idea of the look she wanted. When she visited the Failsworth showroom she fell in love with a display that featured pale wood cabinets and planned to incorporate these with altering textures throughout the space. She’s delighted with the finished kitchen and feels it really makes the downstairs of the house, “the kitchen in amazing, I can’t believe how fabulous it looks. I’ve had so many compliments and love how it works for us on a day-to-day basis but also how fantastic it is to entertain in. Kitchen Design Centre were fantastic from Paul to the fitters. Being able to visit a large showroom was vital for me too.”

Designer Paul Harrington says, “This was a great project to work on because remodelling the downstairs and creating an open-plan area effectively gave me a blank canvas to work with. Sue had some great design ideas and the finished kitchen is the perfect example of contrasting colours and textures.”

WHY NEW YORK IS EMULATING OUR CITY

Helen Sanderson gives her take on the Preston Model

I

was at in a meeting in late September where investment into our city was being discussed. It was interesting enough but anyone who knows me is going to appreciate that, I was struggling with the numbers and what that actually meant on paper. An individual around the table spoke up, he said: “I find it fascinating that I was on a call only the other week and the Deputy Mayor of New York was talking about the ‘Preston Model’.” My ears pricked up, New York? Really? My interest was piqued. Phillip Johnson,

the current Deputy Mayor of the City of New York, my (second) favourite city in the world talking about my hometown (and favourite, just in case you were wondering!). I suddenly felt a little foolish that I knew more about Deputy Mayor Johnson, who is responsible for spearheading a diverse number of initiatives to drive economic growth in the Big Apple, than I did about the politics and investment projects in Preston. I set about learning what I could about what exactly is the Preston Model.

WHAT IS THE PRESTON MODEL?

Preston City Council said: “The Preston Model is an approach to economic development that ensures wealth is redirected back into the local economy.” The ‘Preston Model’ is a term applied to how the council, its partners and ‘anchor institutions’ (I’ll explain who these are in a second) are maximising the benefit of economic development, and ensure that the wealth that is generated directly benefits the local community. Preston City Council explain its as: “The Preston Model, also known as Community

Wealth Building, is an approach to economic development that tackles inequality by ensuring wealth is redirected back into the local economy and shared more equally among its residents.”

THE PRESTON MODEL IS AN APPROACH TO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THAT ENSURES WEALTH IS REDIRECTED BACK INTO THE LOCAL ECONOMY It’s about getting more ‘bang for your buck’, as our American cousins would say! In the 1980s Thatcher talked about the ‘trickle down’ idea of money being spent somehow finding its way into local communities. I guess this worked to an extent, but what is special about the Preston Model is that it tries to be much more deliberate and direct in capturing these economic benefits, and making sure they stick within the local community. Less like a ‘trickle’… more like a hose pipe! The Council committed itself to a co-operative initiative of local economic development in 2011 and Community

localfocus Wealth Building was born with the help of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) in 2013, based on the Cleveland Model and Mondragon cooperatives of the Basque Country in Spain. The co-operative model is where an enterprise is jointly owned and operated by its members for their mutual benefit. This Community Wealth Building approach is being implemented by Preston City Council and a range of organisations, often referred to as anchor institutions, which include the University of Central Lancashire, Community Gateway Housing Association, Preston’s College, Cardinal Newman College, Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire County Council and NHS Lancashire. A key example of this approach in action is the way these organisations encourage local businesses to tender for their contracts.

BY WORKING TOGETHER, PRESTON CAN CREATE A PROSPEROUS AND HEALTHY CITY WHICH BENEFITS ITS PEOPLE, BUSINESSES AND VISITORS The evidence shows that Community Wealth Building activities are boosting the local economy. Recent spending analysis found the procurement from institutions in Preston retained in the city was £112m which compares very well against £38m in 2012/13. In addition, since the start of the project, an additional 4,000 employees in Preston are now receiving the Real Living Wage. Community Wealth Building ensures that the benefits of local growth are shared across local areas and are used to support investment in productive economic activities. Preston City Council launched its Community Wealth Building 2.0: Leading Resilience and Recovery in Preston in February 2021, which sets the direction of travel for the upcoming years.

OPPOSITION

The Preston Model receives a lot of opposition as its viewed as a socialist policy from a Labour Preston City Council. Councillor Matthew Brown has received a lot of publicity for his role in the Preston Model, and has now co-authored a book with Rhian E. Jones, Paint Your Town Red, which claims to show ‘how Preston took back control’. Opposition state that there is no “evidence of quantifiable outcomes.” However what everyone can agree on is

13

14

localfocus

that Community Wealth Building is a great idea! If we can harness the public, private, co-operative and not-for-profit sectors in a local area all to work together for the good of that area, ‘insourcing’ and keeping wealth local. Community wealth building offers an opportunity for local people to take back control, to ensure that the benefits of local growth are invested in their local areas, are used to support investment in productive economic activities and that people and their local institutions can work together on an agenda of shared benefit.

Preston’s Harris Quarter, called the Harris Quarter Towns Fund Investment Programme. The £20.9 million was secured as part of the government’s £3.6 billion Towns Fund, established to help level up towns and cities around the country. The Harris Quarter Towns Fund Investment Programme is focussed on a number of projects across culture, leisure, residential, infrastructure, community and education, and is part of the Preston City Investment Plan (CIP). Preston Partnership also played a lead role in Preston’s ambitious City Investment Plan, a 15-year strategy that will shape Preston’s future development.

PRESTON PARTNERSHIP “The Preston Partnership is a private sector led independent organisation that brings together the private and public sector to help shape the future of Preston”, said a spokesperson for the partnership. The Preston Partnership was formed in 2018 by a group of private-sector business leaders combining with Preston City Council and the University of Central Lancashire. The organisation has grown to include over 100 members from all sectors including property and construction firms, manufacturers, business professionals, leisure and retail and service providers, all passionate about contributing towards the continued growth and development of the city and to see Preston realise its potential. Preston Partnership works closely with Preston City Council to help inform and shape regeneration in our city. Their work was evidenced in March 2021, when a sub-committee of Preston Partnership – the Towns Fund Board – secured a £20.9 million Town Deal which will kick-start a bold and transformational £200 million development programme in

IF YOU TAKE A WALK AROUND PRESTON, YOU WILL NOTICE A POSITIVE FLOW OF CHANGE HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE CITY A spokesperson for the Preston Partnership said: “We believe great things happen when people work in partnership. By working together, Preston can create a prosperous and healthy city which benefits its people, businesses and visitors. A city for everyone.” John Chesworth, Chair of the Preston Partnership said: “If you take a walk around Preston, you will notice a positive flow of change happening throughout the city.

It’s this community spirit that is alive and well in the city that led to the creation of Preston Partnership. People from the private and public sector coming together to enable positive change for Preston and to make our economy work for all our communities.” A spokesperson for the Preston Partnership added: “From the £200m regeneration of University of Central Lancashire and transformation of Winckley Square, to the restoration of the bus station and our city living strategy, Preston’s progress is happening and is only showing signs of accelerating. The Partnership and its people are very much future focussed. Our 15-year City Investment Plan sets out a bold ambition for the city. Preparing our investment plan has stimulated collaboration, generated new ideas and sparked fresh thinking about priorities for the city. Partnership work in action.” John added: “In March 2021, we heralded the government’s decision to award Preston a £20.9 million Town Deal. This funding will help transform Preston’s Harris Quarter through a range of impressive projects and unleash the potential of this cultural and civic city district. Another positive story for Preston. The Preston community spirit is enabling tangible positive change within the city, helping improve its appeal as a place to live, visit, do business, work and invest. A ‘true’ city for everyone.” If you or your organisation want to make Preston an even better place to invest, live, work and visit then the Preston Partnership is for you. n For more information on Preston Model or, to join the Preston Partnership visit: preston.gov.uk and/or prestonpartnership.org

Hey Siri mow the lawn! It’s Saturday morning, you’ve had a tough week at work and typically - it’s raining again! Is it any surprise you don’t feel like mowing the lawn? You skipped doing it last week though, so now unfortunately you don’t really have a choice, otherwise it’s going to be a really big job next weekend. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just say “Siri Mow the lawn” then sit back and enjoy another coffee? AutoMowIt are Lancashire’s approved Ambrogio robot mowers distributor - it’s a newly launched business for Tyler Stevenson who owns the Blackburn & West Lancashire Greenthumb lawn care treatment franchises.

Are robot mowers just a fad?

So why did he start AutoMowIt?

I can provide free site assessments to determine suitability and advise on the variety of features across the range, so clients can make an informed choice. Ambrogio robot mowers can be fully automatic, programmed to mow your lawn on a schedule that suits you. Alternatively they can be instructed via the Ambrogio App on your phone from anywhere in the world - even if that’s just your bed!”

“We have a large lawn at home, with a busy business and a young family I just didn’t have the time to mow my lawn as often as I advised my Greenthumb customers. But, I obviously want my own lawn to be in tip top condition. So I started looking at robot mowers. I did my research, checking out product reviews on line and quickly realised Ambrogio were unparalleled. I was extremely impressed with the product range so my mind was made up. My installer had to travel from Lincolnshire so seeing a gap in the market, I decided to qualify as an approved installer and dealership, serving Lancashire.

Ambrogio have been manufacturing for over 25 years. But to the UK market it feels like robot mowers are a bit new, and there’s a lot of uncertainty in consumers minds. The benefits are clear and the technology is always improving, so they are definitely not just a fad! How does someone choose the right mower?

AutoMowIt are happy to offer a free assessment of your lawn, virtual via FaceTime or in person to discuss suitability and features of the various models. Call 0800 1522123.

Flooring were commissioned to install new flooring to the contemporary bar area aimed at nearby residents as well as visitors and members on match days. The club opted for Calderdale’s Expression Spirit, a stylish pattern with a rich palette, providing the perfect statement carpet. It’s also excellent at dampening sound, which makes it an ideal choice in spacious areas such as the bar where groups of people congregate.

longside sponsoring some of Preston Grasshoppers’ flagship events such as Hopfest, their annual gin and beer festival and their Ladies Day events, Gainsborough Flooring’s Contracts Manager, Eddy Brown, also plays in the club’s veterans team! Over the years the Gainsborough team has installed much of the flooring around the popular club and pre-Covid installed Polyflor’s Expona Flow and Forest fx in the bar area of the main room. This flooring collection encompasses beautifully replicated wood designs with intricate grains and natural colourways with striking abstract effects in a practical and durable vinyl sheet format. They have been specifically developed for very heavy commercial installations in the leisure sector as well as education, healthcare, office and retail environments.

With Covid restrictions in place, the sports club, which not only hosts rugby matches but also a range of other sporting activities and social clubs, wasn’t able to operate. The resourceful team instead chose to utilise their facilities to support the local community and help the battle against Covid by becoming an NHS Vaccination Centre. With a substantial throughput of people, the new flooring certainly proved its hardwearing capabilities.

WE HAVE SO MANY CUSTOMERS WHO COME BACK TO US TIME AFTER TIME, AS WELL AS RECOMMEND US TO COLLEAGUES, FAMILY AND FRIENDS More recently the rugby club has undertaken a major refurbishment project in the Wainwright Bar, to be renamed The 1869 Bar celebrating the history of the Hoppers. Gainsborough

Vicky Brown, Managing Director of Gainsborough Flooring commented: “Customer satisfaction is a key part of our service and we have so many customers who come back to us time after time, as well as recommend us to colleagues, family and friends. We’ve built some incredible relationships over the years with a considerable number of commercial and residential customers across the region. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Preston Grasshoppers and their members for all their support over the years.” The 1869 Bar, along with the ever-popular pitch-side Terrace Bar, will focus on the whole community, welcoming families, friends, larger groups plus those partaking in club sports. If you’d like to see Gainsborough’s installations pop along to Preston Grasshoppers or you can visit the extensive showroom to view the stunning range of flooring available. n

She had spent years on the road covering most of the UK each month, as a sales director, supplying blinds and window solutions. She decided to establish her own company and launched Solis Shutters, Blinds & Awnings right here in Lancashire. Lindsay explained: “I have been in the window solution industry for just over 10 years with a wealth of experience and knowledge. I had thoroughly enjoyed my career but it became increasingly clear that no one locally was really offering luxury window solutions with a bespoke service. I took the plunge to fill the gap

AS THE NIGHTS DRAW IN… Soften the transition between summer and winter by getting your garden geared up to make the most of the later months

J

ust because the temperatures dip, it doesn’t mean the end of enjoying outdoor barbecues, dinner parties and social get-togethers. With gardens now a firm part of contemporary living, cutting-edge designs are aimed at the urban gardener and a new generation of green fingers that have come to appreciate the outdoors. During the crisp, cool weather of autumn and winter, there are so many ways to make your garden look inviting and cosy. Even on the colder nights, you can create a cosy outdoor dinner party your guests will remember. When the weather turns cooler, it’s all about comfy cushions and deep seating you can really snuggle into and sets of furniture that are ideally suited to host

family and friends – generous and luxurious seating to create a calm corner to reflect on the day. Create a sofa nest adding blankets and cushions to the cosiest space in the garden can make it even cosier and mimic the feeling of family gathering in front of the living room fire. There will always be something very homey about a soft, comfortable seat, able to take away the stress of a long day at work. The morning after you’ve entertained, once all guests have gone, why not grab a cup of coffee and read the morning papers on a comfortable outdoor sofa or bench, bringing an element of café chic to your patio or decking.

Winter barbecues are ideal for the whole family, why not move your famous Sunday lunch or even your Christmas dinner outside? No matter what the weather, a barbecue can be thrown into the mix for some alfresco food or for roasting marshmallows with friends and family. A sheltered BBQ area will get you out of the kitchen and into the great outdoors on a dry night. Fire up the grill and get those burgers and sausages on. A fire pit is a great way of creating a campfire feel at home while warming the space and people around you, creating the ultimate social hot spot.

No alfresco garden gathering would be complete without soft lighting, which adds some boho atmosphere to set a charming scene as the sun gets lower. Choose from stylish solar lanterns or string lights for a cosy option that twinkle automatically when the light has almost gone. Gardenesque has recently unveiled their much-anticipated, new outdoor living furniture, lighting and heating ranges, which will extend the good times through the autumn and winter and well into 2022. The collection is a luxurious way to keep guests comfortable throughout the day and evening for conversation, relaxation or stargazing. It may be cold outside, but there are ways to keep people warm and happy while staying safe and enjoying the great outdoors. n gardenesque.com

JEWEL

COLOURS Costume maker Liz Poole, who worked on Netflix sensation Bridgerton, has designed a beautiful interiors accessories collection under her Velvet Linen label

I

nspired by the rich autumnal and wintery tones found in her cottage garden in the heart of Sussex, Bridgerton costume maker and Velvet Linen founder Liz Poole is launching a collection of luxurious handmade home accessories in rich jewel-coloured plain

and printed Liberty velvets. “I love watching my garden change over the seasons and some of my favourite flowers and colours are in abundance during the autumn/winter months. The warm rich tones of dahlias, fuschias and cyclamen provided me with the inspiration for the jewel collection which I feel works so beautifully for any interiors space over the season,” explains Liz, who began working on the collection following the renovation of her Victorian railway cottage. Liz soon realised that the cushions, quilts and seat pads that were being created using the finest velvets and natural linens – were gaining attention from family and friends alike who loved the element of colour therapy and texture they added to the home and wanted to purchase them for their own spaces. It was quite by chance that Velvet Linen was born in the summer of 2020.

Liz has a studio in Ditchling, where she works with a talented team of makers and artisans, who produce costumes for musicals, theatre and opera including West End smash-hits Hamilton and Cinderella, Glyndebourne Opera in Sussex and the Royal Opera House.

Velvet Linen is rapidly becoming a name to watch in the interior’s world, offering an incredible array of home accessories for lovers of the bold and beautiful or for those who have their keen eye on refined and elegant design. n

As the advancement of technology grows, so does design and wall-hung fireplaces are more en-vogue than ever before, making wallhung fireplaces a perfect statement and focal-point in any living area. Brands such as Suncrest, Evonic and more, boast the most striking wall-mounted fireplaces. Whilst typically it is expected that wood-burners are associated with farmhouses and country cottages, wood-burners are becoming popular additions in more modern houses. This trend has emerged throughout recent years as homeowners look to add warmth and a cosy atmosphere to their homes with contemporary wood-burning stoves.

KEEPING COSY AND WARM THIS WINTER As the nights draw in and the temperatures dip its time to turn on the heating and light the fire. Fire place trends are constantly evolving as technology advances and styles come and go. We look at ‘what’s hot’ for winter 2021-22

edia walls are rapidly gaining popularity and though the traditional feature wall has been around for a long time, media walls are a modern spin on the classic, since they include your favourite home devices into the wall. There is an abundance of possibilities when it comes to media walls, with TV’s being the most common feature, therefore it’s not surprising they’re growing so exponentially as an interior design trend. The additional elements such as shelving and other electronic integrations also contribute to the growing trend of media walls. The electric fireplace is a key component of the growing media wall and as homeowners look to splash out on the interior of their homes, this trend doesn’t look to be going anywhere anytime soon. As the nation has been changing its socialising habits due to government regulations, outdoor socialising has become increasingly common. However, the British climate hasn’t always complemented the

change in outdoor socialising and demand has soared for outdoor stoves and heaters. Whilst a huge benefit to outdoor stoves is of course the heat element, they’re also a great way to add depth and character to your outdoor space. Another 2020 trend that is continuing to thrive in 2021, is wall-mounted fireplaces. With more and more houses being built without chimneys, homeowners are looking

his stunning collection of textile art was created by Hannah Wisdom for an exhibition at the prestigious International Boat Show last month. The artworks were created by sewing recycled fabrics directly onto discarded admiralty sea charts in Hannah’s innovative and unique style.

COLLECTION

The collection features a colourful squid at the Isle of Wight, Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth and a majestic heron at Chichester harbour, as well as a portrayal of Sir Francis Chichester’s iconic yacht Gipsy Moth IV on which he undertook his legendary round the world voyage in 1967. This particular work is a limited edition of 95 prints. Hannah’s prints are produced by a fine art printer using cutting edge 3D scanning technology. This means that the prints show all the texture and depth of the original works and are often mistaken for the originals. Prints are dispatched directly from the printer, carefully packaged in a protective tube and are embossed with Hannah’s signature for authenticity and hand numbered. The Boat Show also saw the launch of Hannah’s latest and biggest publicly available artwork to date – Shipping Forecast. This measures 106 x72cm and was created by sewing directly onto a full-size admiralty chart. All Hannah’s designs are also available across a range of cushions, tea towels, coasters and cards. n

To complement the Restore wallpaper design, Graham & Brown has announced its Colour of the Year 2022: Breathe. A soothing mid blue hue, the Colour of the Year 2022 is truly a breath of fresh air. Breathe is perfect for creating calm and peaceful spaces which is exactly what is needed for the year ahead. Dark enough to add colour and depth but light enough to remain refreshing, this tranquil shade can be used almost anywhere in the home. Pair with crisp whites and cool greys for an airy feel or try partnering with deeper blues to create a moody space. Like all Graham & Brown paint, Breathe is waterbased, low odour and VOC, resulting in fewer fumes and a more environmentally friendly product. The paint cans are fully recyclable and there is no animal testing involved in any Graham & Brown products. COSY CASUALS & Our shopaholic and resident clothes horse Samantha Martin has been looking at what’s in store for us this Autumn and Winter in the fashion stakes

R

emember last Christmas when we were all dressed up and nowhere to go? Yep, I’ve still got the amazing little black dress hanging in the wardrobe unworn. Probably with the tags still attached for good measure. So, this year we are all about the glitz and glam, the highest of heels and the most dazzling of accessories to make up for Christmas past. Whilst also remembering that it’s cold out there and we do live in rather wet and chilly Lancashire and not the Bahamas.

These Boots Probably Aren’t Made for Walking When it comes to heels, the higher the better, and at long last the stiletto is taking a back seat to a chunkier heel and my

all-time favourite, the platform. Granted sky high heels aren’t always the easiest to walk in, but a chunky heel does make it less of a balancing act. Textures and patterns are making a standard block colour boot more of a statement item. The good old animal print is still with us and if you want all out glitz then River Island have gone all out-glitter disco with these amazing high boots. But if you do prefer your boots to be of the walking variety whilst maintaining a fashion edge, then Timberland and the legendary Doc Martens are firmly in the fashionistas shoe rack this year. You can even go for a big chunky heel walking boot style. They may not be great for climbing any mountains though.

Keeping It Snug

If you’re planning a cosy family Christmas, then it’s compulsory to have matching pyjamas or at least Christmas jumpers. My personal favourites this year are from The Range. I’ve yet to inform my family that I’ve already decided their Christmas Day outfits. But when you do venture out this year, you’ll be sure to find a coat to match every outfit and boot variety. Fur (faux of course) and Shearling are still huge, the good old Mac is always ideal for those days when the weather can’t make its mind up or you’ve got lots of layers on underneath. Leather biker jackets are looking great over the little black dress or a silky slip dress. And for the days when you’re keeping it casual and need to wrap up warm, then there’s a puffer jacket in just about every colour, pattern, shape, and size. Primark have a range of gorgeous long duster jackets that are great for throwing over your dress. Or if you prefer a more

fashion

47

CHRISTMAS GLAM casual cosy throw over, then long belted knit cardigans are still with us this year.

All About The Bling No outfit is complete without the accessories. For Christmas then it has to be the festive earrings with matching selfie ready glasses. If you are going for a block colour outfit or all black, then topping it off with a bright or glitzy clutch bag looks fabulous. Heels to match are optional on this one. Oliver Bonas will be serving up a statement bag ordering you to party all night this festive season and will be available to order from November. If you prefer something more delicate and understated in your jewellery collection, Hot Diamonds White Topaz range has caught my eye (that is a hint to anyone buying me a gift this year).

Say Yes To The Dress The all-important dress. Whether it’s for the office Christmas party or an outing with your friends and family, us

women seem to obsess over finding that perfect dress. This year I’m injecting some colour and patterns in to my Winter wardrobe. From brightly coloured slip dresses, with a leather jacket thrown over and huge heels, to animal print dresses, patterned flowing pleated skirts to bold block colour matching outfits. Joe Browns are going with pattered dresses and smart dress coats. I found this gorgeous dark floral skirt at From My Mothers Garden, which makes a great alternative to black, with more deep purple tones. Hope Fashion are going bold with this cobalt blue organza skirt. And Matalan are going for a striking snakeskin look in silver for a real eye-catching party look. Cocoove also have the most gorgeous silver sequin wrap dress that looks like a New Year’s Eve must!

All That Sparkles

If you prefer a Christmas or sparkling jumper look for the office party, then there are plenty to choose from. A sequin star black jumper teamed up with a black pencil leather skirt, and don’t forget the textured boots to really give your look a mixed fabric feel. Or perhaps go for a more multi coloured sequin jumper look that can be teamed up with pretty much anything. I love this M&Co zigzag look. And there are plenty of Christmas jumpers out there that avoid the tacky look and go for more of a classy but snug look. Santa hats and reindeer gloves are always optional.

And For The Men Men have it so much easier when it comes to fashion. You can’t go wrong with a well tailored suit and luckily skinny jeans are now an absolute no for men. It’s straight legs all the way. n

WATCHMAKING MASTERY Over the decades Patek Philippe has led the way in watchmaking mastery, pioneering grand complications such as the perpetual calendar

G

rand complications represent the pinnacle of watchmaking and Patek Philippe has created an extensive collection featuring these, that is in regular production. To create such complex timepieces is testament to the Geneva watchmaker’s unrivalled expertise. While their technical complexity is unquestionable and of paramount importance, it never comes at the cost of aesthetics. It is an elegant balance that lies at the heart of Patek Philippe’s ethos on grand complications. As classic grand complications of importance, perpetual calendars have historically featured prominently in Patek Philippe’s collections.

TO CREATE SUCH COMPLEX TIMEPIECES IS TESTAMENT TO THE GENEVA WATCHMAKER’S UNRIVALLED EXPERTISE It was back in 1889 that Jean Adrien Philippe’s talent for mechanical invention resulted in a Swiss patent that protected the design of Patek Philippe’s perpetual calendar mechanism, which never failed to amaze. Here was a small timepiece that was kept in the pocket that could predict the future – which is what the perpetual calendar does. It tells the wearer the day, time and state of the moon taking into account months of varying length. In 1925, the manufacturer presented the first perpetual calendar wristwatch with a highly elaborate complication – today the watch is on display at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. It was a coming of age for the wristwatch, which was crafted based on a case and a movement for a ladies’ pendant watch that had been manufactured in part in 1898. The perpetual calendar wristwatch was

fashion something that established Patek Philippe as the grand master of complications. The perpetual calendar display positioned a quartet of sub-dials symmetrically placed like a compass including the moon phase indication at three o’clock. Back then the rose-gold case was plated with yellow gold – the bezel emphasized with a black enamel fillet and the strap lugs decorated with engravings. Leading the field, the marque capitalised on its expertise in incorporating the perpetual calendar within the confines of a wristwatch.

Over the decades Patek Philippe has produced stunning collections featuring the perpetual calendar, all of superior elegance. The self-winding Ref. 5496 (pictured at the top of the page) shows the enduring popularity of the retrograde date indicator established in 1937 and further refined in 1993. Here the layout remains mostly unchanged except for a larger 39.5 mm case size. The platinum Ref. 5496, powered by the 324 s qr, was launched in 2011. The 2015 model in rose gold is shown here. Patek Philippe perpetual calendars offer a wide range of design elements with analogue or aperture displays and dial configurations. Models with the famous self-winding ultra-thin caliber 240Q movement, such as the Ref. 5327, can be

recognised by their day, date and month displays in three separate subsidiary dials. It comes in a Calatrava case with beautifully scalloped lugs and applied Breguet numerals. The yellow and rose gold models feature ivory lacquered dials with recessed counters. The white gold version has a blue sunburst dial. The watches come with a sapphire-crystal case back and an interchangeable solid gold back. Water-resistant to 30m the model comes with alligator strap with square scales, hand-stitched, with fold-over clasp. n

ward winning medical and lifestyle clinic RejuvaMed has brought several new treatments to the Ribble Valley over recent months including the Elipse gastric balloon, which can transform the lives of those who have problems losing weight, miraDry for those with excessive underarm sweating, and oculoplastic surgery to treat loose and saggy upper eyelids. As an established family run clinic, led by owners consultant doctor Grant McKeating and his wife Charlie, RejuvaMed has built an enviable reputation for quality care, with excellent patient feedback over many years. Dr Grant says: “It’s now four months since RejuvaMed brought the incredible Morpheus8 to the Ribble Valley, and our patients can’t get enough of it! We’ve seen incredible transformations of the face and neck with lift and tightening that have delighted our patients.” Morpheus8 has taken the world of cosmetic medicine by storm and is now the ‘go-to’ treatment in the celebrity world to rejuvenate the face and body, with rave reviews from the likes of Judy Murray, Amanda Holden and Kim Kardashian.

So what IS Morpheus8? Morpheus8 is a combination of two anti-ageing treatments in one. This ‘power couple’ together triggers our own natural healing mechanisms of collagen and elastin production, without injections into the face or body.

the procedure is as comfortable as possible. The skin may be a little pink for a day or so afterwards, but down time is minimal. This non-invasive, relatively painless procedure is safe for all skin tones. Treatments can be performed on any area which exhibits wrinkles, skin laxity, discolouration, acne scarring or stretch marks. It is most commonly used as a rejuvenation and lifting treatment for the face and neck but can also be used to tighten areas such as the thighs and tummy. You’ll often see results within a few days of your first treatment, however your appearance will continue to gradually improve in the following weeks. For best results, we recommend a course of three sessions of Morpheus8, spaced six to eight weeks apart. Results are then maintained for over a year with bimonthly sessions of Forma skin surface RF treatments. These can now be packaged into a course, with huge savings. n To book a consultation to discuss Morpheus8, call us on: 01200 538668, or email: info@rejuvamed.co.uk

WHY CHOOSE PRIVATE HEALTHCARE? With the news that the NHS is under increasing pressure many of us may be looking at paying for our healthcare or using a health insurance policy to get the treatment that we need

T

he quality of care provided by our National Health Service can be excellent. We have some of the best doctors and care-providers in the world, working in all areas of the NHS, and it’s free for everyone at the point of treatment. While care for life-threatening conditions is a priority, the system is struggling to cope as demands on it increase. Waiting times (especially for low-priority, routine procedures) can be lengthy. However, it’s important to remember, even if you take out a health insurance policy, as a British citizen you’ll always be entitled to use the NHS. Paying for your treatment out right or using health insurance, gives you several

advantages. Some treatments simply aren’t available on the NHS – things like emerging drugs for blood disorders, alternative therapies, specialist surgeries and physiotherapy for sports-related injuries, or focused, personal rehabilitation sessions. A health insurance policy may offer these benefits as standard (it’s also sometimes called private medical insurance). Health insurance may also offer additional benefits such as dental care or optical care, 24-hour support in the form of stress helplines or rehabilitation care services, and access to bespoke advice on issues such as nutrition and smoking cessation. Plus, while the NHS offers great care, health insurance usually offers treatment in an

environment that feels more comfortable – like a hotel, rather than a hospital – with menus of choice, private rooms, and en suite facilities as standard. Most of all, however, at the moment, a non-emergency (routine) or specialised treatment on the NHS hospital is likely to mean a delay after your first consultation and diagnosis. This may be a few days, a couple of weeks, or several months – depending on your condition and waiting times. Sometimes, even a diagnosis may take longer than you’d like. Health insurance means you’ll get care promptly, at a time and in a place to suit you. With a health insurance policy in place, you’ll usually be seen within a week or so of your GP making a referral. Tests are usually arranged within a few days, if not sooner, and any procedures are likely to be carried out by the consultants themselves – rather than a more junior member of their team. n

eeking specialist dental treatment, patients throughout the UK travel to the new, Ribble Valley-based Renovo Dental, where there is a top team of dental specialists and general practitioners working with some of the very latest state-of-the-art technology. As part of the team, Dr Khurrum Hussain is one of just 350 periodontal specialists working in the UK – 220 of those being registered in and around central London. “Working as part of a multi-skilled team with the same passion really is a dream come true. It takes the planning and patient treatment quality to a whole new level,” says Dr Hussain, who completed his training in periodontology at the globallyrenowned Eastman Dental Institute at University College London.

Graduating from the institute in 2016, Khurrum returned to his roots in the North West, teaching periodontology to post-graduates at Manchester University and using his skillset working privately for BUPA. As a periodontal specialist, he deals with gum disease and the soft tissue surrounding the palate, degenerating bone issues and failing implants. He is specially trained in the placement, maintenance and repair of dental implants. “My ethos is not just to treat patients with periodontal challenges, but I aim to work together to educate and motivate them and I have had excellent results with this approach. “At Renovo we don’t rush in, we view everything in a calculated way. We offer the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and are also

trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. “Our gums are very much part of our smile and they are the foundations on which we work. Our aim is to get gum tissue and bones strong and healthy before we carry out any further work.” Poorly managed diabetes, smoking or inherited genetics can lead to susceptibility to advanced gum disease – and at Renovo Dental, Khurrum can advise on the best techniques and treatment to overcome the problem. Treatment of advanced gum disease may require dental surgery, such as: Before Left: Pre soft tissue grafting After Right: Post soft tissue grafting Procedure time 90 minutes – one visit

team’s reputation has spread through word of mouth: “We are very fortunate in what we do and what we have here, and we are all passionate and very dedicated. This procedure is performed when periodontitis has destroyed the bone surrounding your tooth root. “There is often a general lack of awareness of what can be done in terms of the latest techniques, treatments and technology. Too often patients are told that the treatment for gum disease and bone loss is not possible. Yes, it is more complex, impossible it is not. That depends on the skillset of the team carrying out the treatment,” explains Dr Khurrum. As a brand new clinic, Renovo has invested in all the latest digital technology dentistry has to offer, including a state-ofthe-art CT scanner which allows the team to plan and perform very precise implant surgery. This CT-guided surgery for implants is accurate, more safe and comfortable and results in faster healing. Since launching Renovo Dental, the

HOW CAN LIFE COACHING HELP ME? Life coaching has grown into a hugely successful form of talking therapy and it has helped many thousands of people turn their lives around. Professional therapeutic coach, Lynn Scholes, explains how SUPPORT FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY CAN JUST CONFUSE US MORE!

C

lients access life coaching because they want something to change. Through self-exploration with a qualified therapeutic coach, confidence can increase, new directions in life can be considered and a sense of overall contentment can be achieved. Often the most important changes are in ‘mindset’. Certainly, you will learn new resources, tools and skillsets but in many cases, it is a person’s mindset that may be holding them back from living the life they truly want.

LIFE IS FULL OF CHALLENGES In today’s world pressures come from so many different directions. In pre-historic times man was responsible for his cave, his woman and his children. Providing food and safety were the two things on his agenda. He was measured by very few criteria. Similarly, woman was there to keep home and raise children, again very few criteria. Today’s world is far more complex, so it is unsurprising that at times we lose the balance or direction we need to feel happy and secure. The pressure of that or other life events can lead to us losing our confidence and every decision becomes a mountain. We may know where we want to go, but seeing how to get there is far more challenging. Likewise, we may know what we need to do, but actually doing it is far harder.

If support from nearest and dearest is available, it will always be given through the lens of their experiences and although well intentioned, it may not be the right way forward for you, They may not want you to take risks that may affect them or they may simply have different expectations of you than you have of yourself.

YOUR GOAL BECOMES MY GOAL AND I WORK ‘WITH’ YOU RATHER THAN ‘FOR’ YOU THIS IS WHERE I COME IN As a project manager of your goals and aspirations, I am there to help you fulfill those dreams, to challenge where challenge is needed, to support where support is needed, to advise where advice is needed but most of all, to take that journey with you. Your goal becomes my goal and I work ‘with’ you rather than ‘for’ you. The coaching process can address specific personal projects, business successes or periods of real upheaval in your life and we work on them by empowering you to identify the true issue and uncover how best you can move forward.

WE’LL WORK THROUGH THE CHALLENGES Mindset is often based on positive and negative experiences in the past and can lead to self-limiting beliefs that need to be challenged. What served you well in one situation may be holding you back now. It is not unusual for clients to come with a situation they feel they are stuck in that can’t be changed, but that is untrue. We

always have choices, but we can’t always see what those choices are. Coaching is based on the fundamental principal of choice and personal responsibility. Clients are incredibly resourceful and coaching draws from the belief that however dysfunctional or challenged a person may feel, that can be transformed through positive choice. Sometimes you may just need support to step up and take responsibility for your life. Challenging your mindset can be opening the door to a whole new future. It can close the gap between a person’s potential and where they feel they currently sit.

WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO CONSIDER LIFE COACHING? There are times in life after major events such as divorce, redundancy, separation, death, or even just as your family grows and no longer needs you, that a re-think is needed. This can be seen as an opportunity for change or a challenge that is hard to face, but that all depends on your mindset. During the pandemic resilience has been severely challenged and you may need guidance on how to redress that balance. Coaching can be focused on work issues or personal issues, or work and personal can be inter-linked. Through coaching, clients can achieve fulfillment in all areas of their life. n

Mohs surgery has the lowest cancer recurrence rates and highest cure rates up to 99% for primary lesions and 98% for reoccurring lesions unsuccessfully treated by other methods. It also has the best cosmetic results of any skin cancer treatment. “It’s been amazing doing high volume Mohs surgery in New Zealand, Australia and Canada where they have the highest incidence of skin cancer, but I always wanted to return to my home town of Burnley and set up my own surgical practice for the people of Lancashire,” says Arif. “My friend and colleague Dr Miguel Montero, a highly-regarded skin specialist, heard I was back and asked me to consider joining his team. I jumped at the opportunity. What better place than Miguel’s beautiful Medical Skin Clinic, located privately within Crow Wood Leisure, to fulfil my ambition of having a

local clinic offering Mohs and advanced dermatology services.” Dr Montero commented: “I’ve diagnosed and treated non-cancerous lesions for many years in my clinic and in the NHS.

MOHS SURGERY IS CONSIDERED THE GOLD STANDARD FOR TREATING COMMON TYPES OF SKIN CANCER “Patients with more serious abnormalities previously required a referral to a specialist dermatologist, which can be a lengthy and worrying process. So, when I heard Arif was returning to the UK and looking to set up his own practice, I was straight on the phone,” says Miguel.

MOHS SURGERY HAS THE LOWEST CANCER RECURRENCE RATES AND HIGHEST CURE RATES UP TO 99% “Lesion removal is difficult to obtain via the NHS, especially in Lancashire and Cumbria. Even if you get to see your GP, there are few with a dermatology speciality. Sadly, some serious cases get missed or caught too late. “With Arif on board, we can help more people, giving them safe, fast and effective private dermatology treatment that eliminates unnecessary wait times and worry.” “Miguel and his wife Gill, who is Clinic

Director, have thoroughly spoiled me,” Arif says with his trademark warm and friendly smile. “I have an excellent purpose-designed theatre room and lab within their clinic, where I carry out my weekly Mohs clinics. “Because it involves a special multi-step process, Mohs surgery is slightly more expensive but more cost-effective than other skin cancer treatments. Health insurance plans also cover it. For patients seeking a traditional approach, I also remove noncancerous and cancerous skin lesions using long-established surgical methods.” Skin cancer prevention and treatment are very much at the top of Dr Aslam’s agenda. He encourages everyone to keep on top of their skin health and to have an annual skin and mole check as early detection leads to a better outcome. ■ Book your FULL-BODY SKIN CHECK for £200, by calling Discover Laser’s friendly team on 01282 420886 If you’d like to know more about treatment, you’ll find lots of information at discoverlaser.co.uk

BRINGING PRIVATE GP SERVICES TO THE HIGH STREET Fylde Private GP’s key focus is to provide an alternative for GP services for those on the Fylde coast

they have been putting off for a long time. This is creating a huge backlog and putting greater pressure on all healthcare services.”

T

he new practice aims to provide people in the region with fast and easy access to private GP services. With increased pressure on the NHS and the growing demand for private health services, the practice will be welcomed by many in the region. Located in the heart of St Annes, the warm, welcoming and comfortable environment will help make patients feel relaxed and valued. A lead GP for the new Practice is a local GP, Dr Maharaj, with 16 years as an NHS GP. Dr Maharaj commented: “The entire way patients are seen in primary care has changed dramatically over the past 18 months. General practice is facing an incredibly challenging time with high demand for primary care services. During Covid, many people have been reluctant to see their GP. Now with Covid measures easing, more people want to see their GP, including those requiring urgent treatment, which

THE 30 MINUTES’ CONSULTATION ENABLES US TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PATIENT AND TAKE A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO THEIR HEALTH AND WELLBEING Matthew Cook, Managing Director, said: “Here at Fylde Private GP we’re offering people an alternative and giving them the choice to see a GP privately. The 30 minutes’ consultation enables us to build a relationship with the patient and take a holistic approach to their health and wellbeing.

It gives patients an opportunity to discuss more than one medical problem if needed or explore any other health and wellness concerns. Patients are free to choose how they are seen, face to face, video, phone or even a home visit, the choice is entirely theirs.” The length of the appointment reflects the proactive approach of the practice, which is keen on preventative care and tackling any health issues before they occur and catching any conditions early on. To encourage this the practice offers annual MOTs or full health checks, which offer reassurance to patients and could potentially flag any health issues or areas of concern. Patient confidentiality is highly respected by the practice and patients have the choice of whether they want the Practice to share their consultation notes with their NHS GP. Dr Maharaj concluded: “We are offering people in the area an alternative for their healthcare, and very much see this as a complementary service to the NHS and other health providers in the region. Our aim is to make patients feel cared for and valued in our warm, inviting and contemporary premises by delivering a personalised and valuable service to each of our patients.” n

lifestyle All the packing in the EnviroShot range is fully compostable and its trigger sprays and bottles are designed to be used time and time again to prevent unnecessary plastic wastage. Because of its light weight EnviroShot uses up 95 per cent less fuel in transport when compared to liquid products, reducing the carbon footprint throughout the supply chain. And all the products in the range are also vegan and have 100 per cent biodegradable formulas. Duncan said: “The report of the mess left on Beacon Fell really shocked me and really underlined in my mind the real importance of a sustainable future. Non-recyclable products and packaging are destroying the very beauty that we admire by piling walkways, roads, and landmarks full of rubbish.

ALTHOUGH WE ARE NOT ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE, WE ALL HAVE A PART TO PLAY IN PUTTING THIS RIGHT

INVESTING IN ALL OUR FUTURES A local family business has invested thousands developing environmentally friendly products after its founder was shocked by lockdown litterbugs who left a local beauty spot covered in plastic rubbish

D

uncan Fishwick, founder and managing director of Shorrock Trichem which produces commercial cleaning products has launched a range of sustainable products designed to reduce the use of single use plastics and to help cut the amount of waste going to landfill.

EnviroShot is Duncan’s answer for innovative, environmentally friendly products after being personally shocked by the damage being caused by non-recyclable products and packaging he saw on his daily walks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Over the course of one single weekend during lockdown, it was reported that a staggering three tons of waste had been collected from one of his favourite walking spots, Beacon Fell Country Park in Lancashire, most of which was destined for landfill. The result of his subsequent work is a range of dehydrated versions of popular cleaning products, turned into small dissolvable capsules. Add a capsule to a trigger bottle or mop bucket filled with water, stir and start cleaning.

“Although we are not all responsible for the damage, we all have a part to play in putting this right.” In the UK it is estimated that five million tonnes of plastic is used every year, nearly half of which is packaging. The UK is also one of the biggest producers of plastic waste in the world, second only to the US. Duncan’s aim was to source products that didn’t heavily involve single-use plastic, to lower carbon emissions and store ingredients and finished products in environmentally friendly packaging. That led him to the discovery that by dehydrating cleaning products and wrapping them in water-soluble capsules, a more environmentally friendly range of products could be created. Duncan said: “We have a responsibility to provide our customers with innovative and sustainable products. The next generation is now coming into the business, including my son, with other second-generation employees. That drives the importance of sending the business in a sustainable direction as we think about what we are leaving behind for them.” n

LOCAL DOG TRAINING FACILITIES BRING CANINE PROBLEMS TO HEEL

R

ecord levels of dog purchases during lockdown have seen an exponential increase in behavioural issues and requests for help, report A&T Trained Dogs, the biggest combined dog training, doggy day-care, and luxury dog hotel in the UK, based in South Lancaster. Unaddressed, and now exacerbated by the mass return to school, college and office, issues can escalate into destructive chewing, aggression, guarding, and even biting. Without remedial help, many dogs face being dumped on overstretched rescue centres or put down. With purpose-built facilities and a highly skilled team led by dog behaviour experts with over 30 years’ expertise worldwide,

Over recent months, many of us will have felt anxiety at returning to ‘normal’ work, travel, and everyday pressures. But many don’t realise that changing routines can create similar anxieties in dogs, manifesting in undesirable behaviours including separation anxiety, barking, nervousness, jumping or pulling A&T’s Heronswood Canine Retreat, near Ashton Hall, provides behavioural therapy, socialisation, and training as well as perfectly pawsome 10,000 square foot doggy day-care, luxury boarding and five-star grooming services. They also deliver the facility to match potential new owners with A&T Trained Dogs’ own responsibly-bred, certified and highly trained dogs. Owner Tarik Jayousi, who opened the facility in 2020, confirms: “Dogs previously secure in 24/7 companionship and attention can be deeply unsettled by owners returning to work. With socialisation and training classes on hold during lockdown, undesirable habits can easily become established.Without guidance and boundaries, these can soon escalate, creating an unhappy, stressed dog and family, but most are easily reversible, with the right support.” Thanks to Heronswood’s extensive state-of-the-art £4 million bespoke building programme, highly trained and dedicated staff, and apprentice training programmes, the centre has brought significant investment and job opportunities to the area. Facilities include doggy day-care, grooming, training and transport and a luxury temperaturecontrolled dog hotel, including separate

blocks for nervous or aggressive dogs, and ‘golden oldies’, who prefer to spend more time sleeping. The extensive and secure indoor and outdoor play and exercise areas, are accessible by all dogs in the day care facilities, for each to decide which environment they wish to be in. Tarik adds: “Our skills have never been so in-demand as this year, but that’s also positive: asking for help is no admission of failure, it’s responsible dog ownership. It’s a daily privilege to meet new friends, welcome back old friends, or restore a balanced, positive relationship between dog and owner.” n

GET YOUR FLU VACCINE AND BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY THIS WINTER People in Lancashire and South Cumbria are being urged to get their flu vaccine as soon as they are offered it to boost their immunity this winter

E

ach year, GPs in the region call on those who are eligible to get their jab to help protect themselves, their family and friends from the flu virus. In a year like no other, and the first year that flu will co-circulate alongside Covid-19, vaccinating against flu is more important than ever. Dr Rahul Keith, a local GP, said: “Flu can be debilitating for anyone, and for those in an ‘at risk’ category it can have a serious impact. “If you are very young, old, or living with a condition, you could be adversely affected so we are asking everyone that is eligible for the free flu jab to ensure they get it as soon as it is offered. It is a simple procedure that could ultimately save lives. “The public’s uptake of the Covid-19 vaccine this year has been very encouraging, but flu is, of course, a completely different

virus so getting this vaccination is just as important in boosting your immunity in the winter months.” The NHS is gearing up to deliver a Covid-19 Booster campaign, but it is vital that people don’t delay in getting their usual protection against the flu virus, as encouraged every year. Flu is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza A or B viruses that can cause mild illness in most people, but some are more likely to develop potentially serious complications, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Many GP surgeries will already be in contact with many of their most ‘at risk’ patients to arrange suitable appointments and some surgeries will also be running special flu clinics to offer more opportunities and will share any dates with patients accordingly. Vaccines can also be administered by your local pharmacist, so those eligible can make enquiries with them about available appointments. Groups eligible for a free NHS flu jab, in the 2021 to 2022 season include: • children aged 2 to 15 (but not 16 years or older) on 31st August 2021 – who will be offered a nasal spray

• those aged 6 months to under 50 years in clinical risk groups • pregnant women • those aged 50 years and over • those in long-stay residential care homes • carers • close contacts of immunocompromised individuals • frontline health and social care staff employed by: – a registered residential care or nursing home – registered domiciliary care provider – a voluntary managed hospice provider The NHS is now heading towards a highly unpredictable winter. With measures in place such as mask wearing and social distancing, flu activity levels were extremely low last year and as a result, a lower level of population immunity against flu is expected this winter. Research has also shown that you’re more likely to be seriously ill if you get flu and Covid-19 at the same time. Get your free flu jab if you are eligible and make sure you have had your Covid-19 jabs 1 and 2 and a booster if you are called. n

WORLD CLASS INNOVATION With a brief to design the world’s fastest aero road bike, Ribble Cycles are proud to launch the all-new Ultra Road, created, manufactured and tested right here in Lancashire, writes Gail Bailey

I

t has been three years in the making but local company Ribble Cycles are proud to showcase their Ultra Road SL R. “The design brief was simple – to create the fastest aero road bike in the world. Not just designed to be the fastest when tested in isolation, but the fastest in the real world,” explains Jamie Burrow Head of Product.

Ribble Cycles’ CEO Andy Smallwood is very much product led and he’s all about challenging convention. The company are not afraid to explore new ground in the pursuit of developing a better performing product and this ethos is core to the culture at Ribble. The Ultra SL R is a groundbreaking showcase on the world stage, of a bike designed and built in Lancashire and retailed in the Ribble Valley and beyond. The Ultra Road has been created to be superfast, following an extensive and revolutionary research and development process of market-leading Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), wind tunnel testing and real-world analysis. Every aspect of the bike and rider performing in perfect aerodynamic harmony has been considered, to create a machine which has been optimised to give maximum aero advantage.

“We started with a visual concept and tube profile shape ideas and then used CFD to modify each one of those tube sections into the perfect aerodynamic shape for the task,” explains Jamie.

IT’S BEEN HARD KEEPING THIS A SECRET FOR THREE YEARS BUT AS A TEAM WE DID “We always knew we could do it,” he adds. “We believed in the project from the very beginning and there was a real buzz and excitement within the team when we realised how we could innovate the design to create the world’s fastest road bike.” The key to the project was to design a bike that was quicker and would use less rider energy to get somewhere faster:

lifestyle “What we suddenly realised was that no-one had ever looked at the handlebars. We created a bike and when tested digitally it was fast – but we lost the gains we made when we put a rider on it,” Jamie explains. “Thinking about why this was happening was when we had our ‘eureka’ moment. The handlebars are the first thing in front of the rider that hit the air – changing the shape of these, to create a wake, was the key factor to make the fastest road bike in the world.”

THE DESIGN BRIEF WAS SIMPLE – TO CREATE THE FASTEST AERO ROAD BIKE IN THE WORLD The handlebar shape was industry standard, in order to attach the brake lever and this limited the extremes of the shape. Ribble Cycles are solution focused and they then worked to design a direct mount brake lever, removing the limiting factor and therefore creating the shape needed: “We worked to manipulate the shapes, and the size of the shapes, using trial and error, until we got a solution that had an ergonomic design with aerodynamic technology. It’s been hard keeping this a secret for three years but as a team we did it and it’s a proud moment for us all.” With many famous riders owning a Ribble, Jamie Burrow himself, former US Postal Team member rode a Ribble from a young age: “I come from a cycling background with both my parents being former British champions and British record holders. I have been going to races for as long as I can remember,” he says. “My dad taught me how to assemble a bike when I was about five or six years old and I’ve always maintained that curiosity about how a bike works, and always searched for the small changes in design that can make a huge difference to performance.”

Being an ex-professional rider means Jamie has not only the design skills but the depth of knowledge of what a cyclist needs from a bike, and this has been integral in the production of the Ultra. Crossing three centuries and still hand assembling bikes, Ribble Cycles maintains the same company ethos. It remains a local business, out performing on a global

stage and continues to fly the flag proudly not only for British design, innovation and engineering but Lancashire too. n

WHAT A NIGHT, PRESTON! Thousands joined Preston City Council in the city centre for a stunning celebration to give thanks and show appreciation to our key workers. Photography: Preston Photographic Society

O

n Saturday 2nd October, despite the heavy rainfall, spectators lined the streets of Preston to see the mesmerising ‘Thank You’ torchlight parade hosted by the Mayor of Preston. The procession included commissioned acts such as the fire and smoke-breathing mobile hubcap dragon and otherworldly performers brandishing flaming torches and tridents, known as Dragon Beats and the illuminated mechanical puppet, Jabberwocky. However, what really brought it to life were the hundreds of Prestonians of all ages who came out to participate and represent key workers from across a wide range of organisations, businesses and groups. The weather may

have been dismal, but the atmosphere was vibrant. A breath-taking fireworks display followed shortly after the end of the parade made its way to Preston Bus Station. Set off from three separate locations to ensure it was

In a video displayed on a large screen in front of Preston Bus Station following the end of the procession, Mayor of Preston, Councillor Javed Iqbal, said: “As we conclude what has been yet another wonderful Lancashire Encounter festival, which has brought three fantastic weekends of arts, culture, and entertainment to the city centre. I would like to thank all the acts, participants, volunteers and staff who have worked so hard to make it all possible. “Hosting this parade allows me the opportunity to celebrate and thank the many key workers who have supported the city and our communities through the pandemic. I am immensely proud of how the people of Preston have dealt with the challenges we have faced and would like to give a heartfelt tribute, as well as a massive thank you to all key workers, charities, businesses and communities’ groups in Preston for the sacrifice and support that they have selflessly given to the community throughout this difficult period. UNDERSTANDING

MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE Errors made due to medical negligence can have a lasting impact on patients mentally and physically, and many of those affected have no idea where to turn or who to speak to, explains Holly Barnes, medical negligence expert at Farleys

T

he majority of medical appointments and treatments undertaken on the NHS or privately are completed without any problems. However, there are occasions where errors are made due to negligence. The first thing to establish is whether medical negligence has occurred. So, what is medical negligence? If you have been injured or harmed by a GP, nurse, dentist, pharmacist, paramedic, consultant, or private clinician, you may have been the victim of medical negligence. There is a standard of care expected of medical professionals and, if they fall below this standard, they are likely to be negligent. Your health is the number one priority so the first thing you need to do if you feel your treatment has been negligent is to raise the issue with the person treating you. It is also perfectly acceptable to ask for a second opinion from another medical professional if you want it. If you have spoken to the person treating you and you’re still unhappy, you should make a written complaint. For a GP, your complaint should go to the GP surgery’s practice manager or, for NHS staff, you should make your complaint to the complaints department of the relevant NHS trust or hospital.

If you choose to make an official complaint, you should always make it in writing, by email or recorded post. Never just telephone someone as you will have no record of what was said. You can find copies of the complaints process on the organisation’s website. If you’re unsure, ring them and ask them to send it to you. State in your letter that you are prepared to allow 14 days for an acknowledgement and 40 days for them to send you a response. When deciding what to say, try and step back from what has happened. Be clear but, more importantly, be precise. Some complaints may be about a number of things so make a list of all your complaints, putting them in order of importance. The simpler and clearer you make your complaint, the harder it will be for any professional to avoid answering your grievance. A medical negligence solicitor can guide you through the process for making a complaint as well as advise you on the possibility of making a claim for damages so it is important to speak to a legal specialist at the earliest opportunity. To bring a successful claim, you must prove, on the balance of probabilities that breach of duty has occurred and that it caused you to suffer injury. Your legal representative can discuss this in detail with you referring to your individual set of circumstances.

You must show that the treatment or care received fell below the standard of a responsible body of medical practitioners in the relevant field of medicine. It must also be proved that the breach of duty caused or materially contributed to you suffering a worse outcome than you would have done if the breach of duty had not occurred. Most clinical negligence claims have a three-year time limit, which means that court proceedings must be issued (not just that the claim must be started) within three years of the injury or in some cases, three years from the date that you first became aware the injury was caused as a result of negligence. For cases involving children, the three-year time period starts from their 18th birthday. The investigative process at the start of a claim can be lengthy and therefore, it is advantageous to instruct legal representation as soon as possible and when the issues are fresh in your mind. n

Farleys has a team of experienced medical negligence solicitors based in Lancashire To discuss your case with a specialist please call 01254 368040, email: info@farleys.com or visit: www.farleys.com

WELCOME RETURN TO STUDENTS

HEAD GIRL & HEAD BOY

Thousands of students have arrived in Preston for the return of face-to-face teaching at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). New students arriving on campus for the first time were greeted by a range of entertainment acts as they collected their keys and moved into their halls of residence. Professor Graham Baldwin, Vice-Chancellor, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming new and returning students to our fantastic Preston Campus.

This year, Oakhill is pleased to introduce Year 11 pupils Eleanor Dawson and Matthew Brett as Head Girl and Head Boy. £60M STUDENT CENTRE OPENED

170 primary schools were invited to get involved with the Fantastic Book Awards that have been developed by Lancashire’s School Library Service. These awards run until May 2022. They will involve thousands of children from Lancashire primary schools reading and discussing the books and voting for their favourites. The five winning titles for the Fantastic Book Awards will be announced on Wednesday 25th May 2022. The main aim of the awards is to support children aged nine to eleven years in reading for pleasure by introducing them to newly published fiction titles and encouraging them to read and discuss the books.

The University of Central Lancashire has opened the long-awaited £60m Student Centre and University Square. The development, measuring 12,304 sqm, will give students access to an extensive network of support and a ‘modern environment to work and relax’. Each aspect of the Student Centre building has been constructed with sustainability, accessibility and student wellbeing in mind, offering a place to study, socialise and access support under one roof.

A WAY OF LIFE A Westholme education is a way of life. Meena McDonald talks to Principal Dr Richard Robson to find out more

E

very parent wants the best education for their child. We’re not just talking about academic achievement, but a joyous experience which will set your child apart and provide them with the 21st century skills to take them through life and onto successful careers. Westholme has proved it can deliver this. With a warm, inclusive and nurturing environment alongside the academic acumen borne out in the recent record breaking GCSE and A Level results, it truly is the leading school in Lancashire which promises every child a first class education. The school thrives on the myriad of experiences available to each student and

the incredibly vibrant environment. Along with the academic rigour of the teaching provided by the excellent staff, the school provides extra-curricular opportunities to every student whatever their interests may be, allowing them to explore their aspirations and broaden their horizons to become confident, independent and high achieving individuals.

Dr Robson continued: “We set equal value on everything we provide, whether that’s chemistry or the kayaking club.

This, we believe allows our students to thrive in a safe and encouraging environment whilst they develop the qualities that are essential to sustain a successful career in the outside world.”

ALLOWING THEM TO EXPLORE THEIR ASPIRATIONS AND BROADEN THEIR HORIZONS TO BECOME CONFIDENT, INDEPENDENT AND HIGH ACHIEVING INDIVIDUALS Since Dr Robson joined the school in January this year it has experienced a renewed sense of direction and the energy within the school is quite remarkable. Whilst the increased intake of students has been dramatic, this has been combined with a new investment programme and the building of the new Prep School, which will bring the whole school onto one site, is only just the start – there’s a lot to be excited about at Westholme! Some students leaving the senior school who had chosen to explore possibilities outside of Westholme post-16, returned

education

after only a few days realising how stimulating and incomparable the new INSPIRED Sixth Form is that they won’t experience anywhere else. The intake for all years has increased considerably and Years 7, 10 and 11 are now full with a waiting list. External students are only able to join the current Years 8 and 9 and they are filling up fast. It is remarkable what is happening as the school can demonstrate that every pupil will achieve the highest grades attainable in their GCSEs, as well as experience this unrivalled holistic excellence which has captured the imagination of so many. One student leaving the INSPIRED Sixth Form this summer commented: “The oneto-one support of staff is invaluable and I know without the support, encouragement and guidance of Westholme I would not be as ready or as confident to go out into the wider world and make my mark on society.” This comment sums up the students’ unequalled passion for the school when they attribute their success to the unique Westholme experience. Westholme is a selective school so an entrance exam must be taken and a reference provided from the student’s current school to ensure they fit into the environment and are able to positively contribute to the school with kind, respectful and courteous behaviour which ensures the warm, caring ethos synonymous with Westholme. Those considering the INSPIRED Sixth

Form can also apply for the Sixth Form INSPIRED Scholarship which covers between 50 per cent to 100 per cent of school fees for both years of study in Year 12 and 13. Students will need predicted at least seven GCSE grade 7s or higher to apply for the scholarship, and

those successful will be joining students who go on to study at Oxbridge, top courses at Russell Group universities, specialist educational institutions or are selected out of hundreds of applicants for coveted degree apprenticeships. Dr Robson concluded: “If you haven’t considered Westholme or indeed any independent school before, then we encourage you to come along and see what we have to offer, you may well be surprised and completely blown away with what we can provide for your child. Our authentic and down to earth approach appeals to students from all walks of life and our inclusivity will make them feel instantly at home, relaxed and easily able to partake in our exciting school life. Westholme is not a school really, it is a way of life, the making of our students and the whole family become an extension of the Westholme family when students join.” n To request a personal tour of the school contact the Admissions Manager, Miss Katie Gallagher on 01254 506088 or email: registrar@westholmeschool.com

S

tonyhurst sports’ scholars have had a hugely successful summer break, acquiring a number of remarkable achievements between them. Liberty, who is in Year 13, plays cricket professionally for the Lancashire Under 18s in the North West Thunder Academy, alongside England Captain, Alex Hartley. In the ECB Under 18 County Competition Liberty averaged 48 runs from just six innings, leaving her as one of the leading run scorers in England. In early August, she attended a cricket festival at Shrewsbury School, attended by the best young girls from around the country where Liberty found herself in the top five wicket takers from over 100 participants. On the back of these performances, Liberty was selected for the School Games at Loughborough University featuring the best 39 under 19 female players in England. Hugo, another talented cricket scholar and Year 10 pupil, plays professionally for Lancashire County Cricket. During the summer, Hugo was selected to represent Lancashire in all fixtures for the U14s, playing matches across the country against different counties. Most recently, talented tennis players and sisters, Hima and Ella played in the Lancashire Under 18s against some of the most accomplished players. he Be Inspired Business Awards is the longest running, largest and most prestigious business awards ceremony. Run by the North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce the BIBAS is hailed as ‘the one award they all want to win’. North West supermarket chain Booths was named the Business of the Year in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 1,000 people who were entertained by The Shane Richie Band, fronted by the Eastenders’ actor who performed a lively selection of hit songs from the 80s. Babs Murphy, chief executive of the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce which organises the awards, said the event was “a perfect celebration” after a tough 18-months for the county’s business community during the Covid-19 pandemic. The last time it was held was in 2019.

business team decided against presenting its annual lifetime achievement award, Lancastrian of the Year, instead focussing on recognising the achievements of the companies across the county. Babs said: “The successes we celebrated at The BIBAs were a recognition of a real collective success by so many people, it did not seem right to single out an individual this year.” Despite the relaxation of restrictions around gatherings, the BIBAs’ organisers still had restrictions in place with all guests showing negative Covid-19 test results upon arrival. Inside the Tower Ballroom, all guests had access to hand sanitiser on their tables to ensure all attendees remained safe.

THIS NIGHT WAS ABOUT WHAT LANCASHIRE BUSINESS HAVE ACHIEVED IN THE PAST YEAR. LANCASHIRE HAS ALWAYS HAD A GREAT SPIRIT AS SHOWN THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC

She said: “Lancashire businesses have used innovation, enthusiasm and sheer hard work to overcome so many challenges over the past 18-months, and The BIBAs was the perfect way to recognise them. “Regardless of the sector they are in or the size of the business we have had to dig deep and rely on the character of our people to get us through this tough period. “Now we are hopefully coming out of the other side we can use the inspiration of all those businesses involved in the BIBAs to help return us to growth.” Northern food and drink retailer Booths won the top prize of business of the year. Graham Booth, Director said: “It has been an incredibly difficult 18-months for everyone, this award comes as something of a recognition for all the hard work everyone has put in. We are delighted to have won this honour.” For the first time, the awards judging

The night belonged to those Lancashire businesses which had overcome adversity, including the owners of the Longlands Hotel near Carnforth, which collected the Most Resilient Business of the Year award sponsored by UCLan Business. Other winners on the night included Preston chemicals firm Evans Vanodine which won the Family Business of the Year, Lancaster textiles firm Standfast and Barracks which collected the Manufacturer of the Year and Preston Vocational Centre, the winner of the Education Establishment of the Year. Ross Brown of Lytham-based Melling Performance Springs won the Apprentice of the Year prize and Blackburn-based Sales Geek was named the Scale Up Business of the Year. The night was hosted by top business commentator and former investment banker Justin Urquhart-Stewart with Lancashire-based international opera star Sean Ruane performing for the audience, and celebrity Shane Ritchie entertaining guests until the early hours. Justin Urquhart-Stewart said: “This night was about what Lancashire business have achieved in the past year. Lancashire has always had a great spirit as shown throughout the pandemic. The winning businesses have proved the red rose is blooming!” Each award came with a cheque of £2,000 for the winning businesses to invest in a project of their choice. Booths have decided to donate their fund to

the Harris Charity of which the original EH Booth was a founder in 1883. The Harris Charity helps young people in hardship move forward in life. Edwin Booth, Chair and CEO of Booths says: “My great, great grandfather Edwin Henry Booth believed in giving back. Orphaned at the age of 11, by age 19 he was a tea dealer, opening his first shop in Blackpool. He found what he excelled at and became a founding trustee of the Harris Orphanage, now the Harris Charity, which supports young persons in difficulty, ensuring that talents are not constrained through lack of opportunity. It seems fitting that winning an award in Blackpool, just a few yards from the very beginnings of Booths, should be reinvested to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs.” n

A report to Lancashire County Council’s Cabinet has outlined some of the key achievements from Boost’s successful programme. Boost helps Lancashire business owners and leaders to find the right support for their business. It also delivers a number of funded programmes for start-up, established and fast-growing businesses. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Boost also reconfigured its support to help businesses to deal with the effects of the pandemic. From January 2019 to the end of June 2020, more than 2,770 businesses accessed Boost’s services and support for the first time, which involved a diverse group of businesses, not just repeat users. Boost helped to support an increase in employment numbers in 567 supported enterprises.

SUCCESSFUL FUNDED PEER TO PEER PROGRAMME IS BACK FOR LANCASHIRE BUSINESSES A successful business support programme which allows Lancashire business owners and managers to learn from each other, improve their business performance and gain insight from private sector experts is set to return to the county. Peer Networks, which is being funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, is led locally by Boost, Lancashire’s Business Growth Hub. It starts in September, nearly 12 months after 300 business leaders took part in the first Peer Networks programme in October 2020. Peer Networks will bring together 35 groups of 11 business leaders to solve common challenges and create powerful long-term networks. The groups will be facilitated by key organisations from Lancashire’s business support community including the Northern Automotive Alliance, Northern Power Women and Marketing Lancashire.

TICKING ALL THE BOXES Developed on the race track, the Cayenne E-Hybrid is a magnificent example of Porsche engineering. Paul Agnew takes it on a test drive to find out more. Photography: Roger Moore

S

o it powers from 0-62mph in just five seconds? Most impressive. And it reaches a top speed of 157mph? Wow, sounds like a proper sporty motor. Delivers up to 91 mpg and up to 1605 litres of boot space. Really? That’s incredible. And now you’re telling me it’s an E-Hybrid? Sorry, totally implausible. Oh, hang on, are we talking Porsche? Well, why didn’t you just say that in the first place? Impressive, sporty, incredible, ground breaking – yes, definitely sounds Porsche. And the Cayenne E-Hybrid certainly

represents all that is great about the world-famous brand. A mix of sustainability and driving dynamics, absolutely guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of all true sports car enthusiasts.

For this superb motor represents true hybrid technology – developed on the race track – with outstanding fuel efficiency and space for the whole family. Let’s take a closer look. Irrespective of the car you drive or how good you consider it to be, you are unlikely to have come across the build quality of a modern Porsche and the fit, kit and finish of the Cayenne E-Hybrid is quite magnificent.

A MIX OF SUSTAINABILITY AND DRIVING DYNAMICS, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED TO BRING A SMILE TO THE FACE The traditional German attention to detail is everywhere you look and touch – solid and chunky, yet big on detailed design and oozing style. Dig a little deeper to find plenty of the very latest technology. Let’s take most of what goes on under the bonnet as read. This is, after all, a proven member of the Porsche family. Inside the cabin the highlights are many.

Top of the list is the 12.3 inch touchscreen that sits slap bang in the middle of the dash, along with many of the hybrid controls. The screen is responsive with all the information/entertainment you could wish for. The home screen can even be personalised to help even further with your navigation. The model I ‘tested’ (‘enjoyed’ would be far nearer the truth) was an all-wheel drive, automatic in jet black metallic with a power output of 340 kW/ 462 hp. Complete with panoramic roof system, Porsche logo LED door courtesy lights, adaptive air suspension, sport tailpipes, power-steering plus, 22 inch wheels in high gloss black, tinted LED main headlights with matrix beam, privacy glass, soft close doors – the list goes on.

BE IN NO DOUBT, THIS IS A SPEEDY AND POWERFUL CAR Oh, you want more? Okay, ambient lighting, 18-way adaptive front sports seats, side airbags in the rear, heated steering wheel, compass/sports chrono stopwatch instrument dial in white, Porsche crest on the headrests, illuminated door sill guards, 7.2 kW on-board charger with mobile charger connect, keyless ignition, climate control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, parking sensors, reversing camera and power operated tailgate. In short, just about everything – although you can upgrade to the Turbo S E-Hybrid for an even sportier design and a few more comforts and gadgets. As well as all the excitement and ecosensitivity elements, it is also a very safe car to drive. The official Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash test delivered it a five-star rating backed up by an incredible 95 per cent score for adult occupant protection. And now for a closer look at the electric driving and hybrid performance. We covered some of the data at the outset, but it is worth noting that the Cayenne E-Hybrid has an electric range of up to 30 miles and an electric top speed of 83mph. The electric motor – linked to the 17.9 kWh battery – is integrated into an eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. Working in tandem with a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine ensures that what you gain in efficiency (up to 91 mpg) and low CO2 emissions (71g/km) you certainly don’t lose in

performance. Be in no doubt, this is a speedy and powerful car. The battery can last between three to five years, depending on weather conditions and driving habits and charging is both simple and easily available. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is every inch a car for the here and now. Show me a box and I’ll enter a tick. n

‘THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN WORLD CYCLING’ Brian Cookson, OBE has never won an Olympic or World Championship medal and he’s never won the Tour de France. By his own omission he was “never good enough to be a professional cyclist and never selected to compete for Great Britain”. The media have referred to him as the most powerful man in world cycling on more than one occasion, but it’s fair to say that unless you are a serious follower of cycling, you may never have heard of him

B

rian is a Preston man who is widely acknowledged for restoring integrity back into the sport of cycling. He has recently been appointed Chair of the Board of Active Lancashire, the strategic lead for sport and physical activity in the county. He brings a wealth of experience within sport to the role, most notably in the world of cycling where he held the position of President for the British Cycling Federation and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the global governing body for cycling.

Brain said: “I’ve worked for the sport as a local, regional, national and international official for forty years. I spent nine years (1984-93) as a member of the British Cycling Federation’s Racing Committee. “In November 1996, when the entire BCF Board was removed from office on a vote of no confidence, I headed up an Emergency Committee that took over the running of that organisation. I became its President, leading its transformation from a basket-case into an award-winning organisation, with British riders winning

multiple Olympic and Paralympic medals, numerous world championships, and most of the greatest races of the world cycling calendar.”

BRIAN WAS AWARDED AN OBE FOR SERVICES TO CYCLING IN 2008 AND PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN IMPROVING THE PERCEPTION AND INTEGRITY OF THE SPORT DURING THE LAST DECADE Brian was awarded an OBE for services to cycling in 2008 and played a key role in improving the perception and integrity of the sport during the last decade, whilst developing opportunities for previously neglected areas within the sport such as women’s cycling and cycling in developing nations. By the end of 2012, Great Britain had won almost all the cycling golds at the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Team GB were the world’s top-ranked

cycling nation, cycling had become arguably the nation’s most popular participation sport, and British Cycling was in a period of exponential growth, winning numerous awards for its achievements. Next for Brian was the UCI, l’Union Cycliste International, the sport’s world governing body. Brian explained: “The UCI was in serious difficulties thanks to its mishandling of a series of major scandals, this organisation too needed new leadership. And in September 2013, in the great hall of the astonishing Pallazio Vecchio in Florence, where 500 years earlier Machiavelli had worked his devious plots, I was elected President after a bitter and controversial election campaign – the first time the incumbent President of any international sports federation had been defeated for some 40 years. “For the following four years, I worked with the UCI’s Management Committee and with my Executive Team to try to bring about a re-setting of the sport’s image and credibility, and to ensure that this was achieved through the reality of the highest possible standards of ethics and good governance. We achieved many good things in that four years. After the all-time low of being threatened with removal from the Olympic Games, a new level of credibility was achieved.” Now at 70, back in his home county of Lancashire, after a lifetime of commitment to sport Brian takes up a new role with Active Lancashire. Following two years as a board member he becomes Head of the Board, at a pivotal moment in the organisation’s 20-year history, ahead of the launch of a new 10-year strategy that will drive the organisation forward and expand its growing responsibility in health,

the local economy and physical activity in Lancashire. On his appointment, Brian said: “I am very pleased to have been appointed as the next Chair of the Board at Active Lancashire. To be able to contribute to such a dynamic organisation that improves the quality of life for people in my home county is a wonderful opportunity indeed. I am looking forward to working with board members, our driven and talented staff and our huge network of volunteers and partner organisations to take this vital work forward in the coming years.”

TO BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO SUCH A DYNAMIC ORGANISATION THAT IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PEOPLE IN MY HOME COUNTY IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY INDEED Adrian Leather, Chief Executive at Active Lancashire (pictured to the right of Brian), adds: “I am delighted that Brian has stepped forward to become our new Board Chair. Brian’s personal commitment to grassroots sport and active lifestyles, combined with his experience in leading

sport

sport at an international level and his professional experience of leading regeneration in deprived communities gives me huge optimism for an exciting and challenging next chapter of Active Lancashire’s work, under Brian’s leadership.” Active Lancashire was founded in 2000. Originally named Lancashire Sport Partnership, the not-for-profit organisation has evolved over the years and now employs over 50 members of staff who connect with more than 100 partners across a variety of sectors. As the strategic lead for sport and physical activity across the county, locally Active Lancashire connect with like-minded organisations to help bring about active lifestyles and nationally they represent one of the many Sport England-led Active Partnerships that drive a sports delivery system across the country. They believe that sport and physical activity have the power to influence behaviours and develop skills which can have a broader, positive impact on people’s lives. Their work in leading and facilitating effective partnerships across the county from key influential decision makers, through to community grass roots organisations aims to encourage Lancashire residents to engage in sport and physical activity and lead a happy, healthy, more prosperous life. n

HOW CAN WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR?

D

espite Covid we are blessed with lots of new eateries in our area and the festive season would be a great opportunity to check them out. Since lockdown there seems to have been an increase in places offering Brunch menu’s as well as small plates, to suit all tastes. Many of these restaurants are also opening for Christmas Day with their own take on the traditional Christmas lunch. There are many small, intimate venues ideal for those who want a relaxed Christmas Day without all the cooking stress and the supermarket battle. All the hotels along the Fylde coast are also offering Christmas Day dining. Expect all the trimmings of a traditional Christmas roast and a mini menu for the kids. Hotels are great venues for larger families to meet up and celebrate together, without arguing over who is doing the washing up.

LET THE SHOW BEGIN

If you’re looking for some pre-Christmas entertainment, be it an office party or a friends and family gathering, then there are

When it comes to Christmas celebrations, after everything that happened last year, we’ve an awful lot of making up to do. Our very own Santa’s little helper Samantha Martin has been looking at different ways to celebrate this year in our area. From glamour packed shows, skipping the cooking on Christmas Day, to enjoying more intimate festive dining away from all the hustle and bustle lots of live shows back on this year running throughout the festive period. Pantomimes are back on and we may not have the Guild Hall in Preston as an active venue but most of the smaller theatres are back with a traditional family. And don’t forget the cabaret shows in Blackpool which host a full evening of glitz and glamour with live music and entertainment as well as a threecourse meal.

LET IT SNOW

During the lockdown a number of pop-up bars appeared in our towns (when we could meet outside), these took on an après ski/ Christmas market feel about them, serving mulled wine, bratwurst and pretzels. They

were a great addition to our high streets after a day of Christmas shopping. I’ve been reliably informed that they are coming back again. They definitely add to the festive atmosphere with live entertainment and winter cocktails.

THE MAIN EVENT

Going out for food on Christmas Day use to be frowned upon but as we have spent so much of the past two years at home it’s looking more and more appealing. It doesn’t have to be drama. In fact, as more restaurants are now happy to cater for those who don’t wish to stay in on the most festive day of the year, dining out is becoming easier and more convenient than ever before. Getting out of the house during the day also means you don’t have to stress over cooking for hours on end and feel exhausted by the end of it.You are able to sit back, relax and spend some time with the family. One of the best things about eating out at Christmas is that not everyone has to eat the same main course. A large majority of restaurants will either have a set menu or give you several options to choose from. So, for the vegetarians, vegans or dairy free members of the group, they don’t have to feel awkward about asking for something that is better suited for them. Everyone’s a winner. Depending on how many people you are dining with during the day, eating out may actually be cheaper than eating in. By staying at home, we tend to overspend on food items we won’t necessarily need or even eat. So in reality, eating a meal out means you are more inclined to order whatever you feel like at the time.

You only have to check out your local restaurants to see the options available. Restaurants tend to go all out to make Christmas Day feel super special. There might be carols, a pianist, a glass of Prosecco on arrival. You’ll probably feel like you’re in a festive 90s rom com, and you will love it.

KEEPING IT LOW KEY

With Covid still looming some of you may just prefer to keep your Christmas low key and celebrate with your nearest and dearest in the comfort of your own home. But that

doesn’t mean you need to skip the festive fun or the glamourous trimmings. Grab yourself a massive glitzy tree a luxury hamper of all your festive goodies, light a mulled wine candle and gather around in your matching Christmas Pyjamas. Whilst also trying not to eat the entire contents of a selection box all in one go. However, you plan to spend your Christmas this year, whether you are going all out, glamourous parties or low key local small intimate dining be sure to have a wonderful time – we all deserve it. n

ALL SET… As work continues apace, the soft opening for the Three Fishes will be the evening of 10th November with the official, full opening on 12th November. Photography: Kirsten Platt

T

he legendary Three Fishes is gradually taking shape and is all set to open its doors next month. The pub is undergoing a complete transformation under the watchful eye of chef Nigel Haworth, who took on the pub in a joint venture with Martin Aspinall, a trustee of the Standen Trust. Nigel explains: “There has been little core investment in the building over the past 20 years, so we are making a fresh start – time and technology have moved on.” While the pub previously had very limited outdoor seating, a terrace area at the rear of the pub is being landscaped with stone flags, railway sleepers and beautiful plants – this will be an area that will feature an exclusive Chef’s Table, seating 12 diners served by chefs, who will have a charcoal grill to cook alfresco for Chef’s Table guests. The new outdoor terrace will have up to 50 covers, southern facing with views over the Ribble Valley towards Kemple End, and when the weather becomes inclement there will be a retractable roof to keep guests warm. Behind the scenes is a new state-of-the-art kitchen, designed by Nigel and the team at CHR Equipment in Preston. Nigel explains his plan and vision for the growing area at the Three Fishes when he talks about sustainability, permaculture and capturing the essence of flavour by

growing heritage seeds organically and with seasonality. Chickens will roam in the edible forest, fruit, vegetables, herbs, and shoots will be grown and wild produce will be foraged. The one-acre plot, which is adjacent to the pub will be prepared by Danielle Strain in a permaculture ethos, no chemicals or fertilisers – just working completely in harmony with the natural world. Seeds will be planted over the coming months in readiness for spring: “We will be growing vegetables from seeds that have been chosen purely for their flavour – which is my main goal to seek out flavours for the menu which will be changing with the seasons. It is a farm to fork ethos, where flavour comes before looks and the ingredient is king.”

THE MENU WILL BE CHANGING WITH THE SEASONS AND IT WILL REVOLVE PURELY AROUND THE INGREDIENTS The interior of the Three Fishes is also undergoing a huge transformation – the building has been totally stripped and re-wired. Apart from the original bar, which is having a traditional oak bar top, the rest of the interior will be a mix of classic and contemporary furnishings and feature lighting. The interiors have been carefully crafted by Kathrine Haworth, Nigel’s wife who, with Martin Aspinall have taken inspiration from the heritage of the Ribble Valley. A stone archway in the middle of the pub marks the start of the private dining area. Separated by sliding oakTHREE doors, the two areas of 18 and 12 seatFISHES a total of 30 people, this area is ideal for small conferences, birthday parties or christenings. 20210816

BOOTHS TEAM UP WITH MICHELIN STAR CHEF

OLIVE TREE TO RE-OPEN AS A BRASSERIE

BOB & BERTS COMES TO TOWN

HURST GRANGE CAFÉ NOW OPEN

LYTHAM’S HIDDEN GEM THAT ONLY GETS FIVE STAR REVIEWS

FINE DINING IN KIRKHAM

Booths has teamed up with multi-Michelin star chef Simon Rogan to create a new range of recipe boxes. Designed with the home cook in mind, the ‘Let’s Cook’ boxes contain premium ingredients specially selected by Rogan’s team of chefs from Booths’ trusted producers. They are available at Booths supermarkets and in selected Amazon Fresh postcodes. The boxes contain instructions, a step-by-step video delivered by Rogan himself and a little bottle of “chef magic” from the Rogan kitchens, designed to elevate each cook -at-home dish to the next level.

Bob & Berts joins the growing list of big name eateries opening up in Preston. Popular UK coffee chain Bob & Berts is making its way to Preston. Set to open during November, the store will be located in a vacant spot in Fishergate across from Primark. The chain was first founded in Portstewart, Northern Ireland, in 2000 and has since expanded with 14 stores in Northern Ireland and five stores in Scotland. In June the first Bob & Berts opened in England, in Lancaster. Preston is set to be the second store in England for the chain.

A street food takeaway in Lytham has made such an impression with diners that it has landed 348 five star reviews out of 353 in total. Elvin Asher and Charlotte Natfel set up their own eatery, Elvin’s, in the pandemic right in the centre of Lytham. The food is inspired by traditional Middle Eastern food and serves dishes like Pakistani scrambled egg, shawarmas, buddha bowls and even simpler things done well such as steak and chips. It caters for vegans and aims to offer food at an affordable price. The response from the community was described as ‘overwhelmingly supportive’ when they opened during a pandemic and that has continued to be the case since the eatery opened its doors proper.

The former Olive Tree restaurant in Preston will reopen in 2022 as an English brasserie. New leaseholder Mark O’Rourke is a local restauranteur who owns several Preston restaurants, such as Fino Tapas, La Neta, 263 and Winckley Street Ale House. The Preston Olive Tree closed in August with Lytham, Chester and Stockton Heath remaining open. The city centre venue is to remain a restaurant but will lose its former name. Mark and his team are yet to choose a new one, but they expect to decide and open the new location by January 2022.

The new dog-friendly Hurst Grange Cafe in Penwortham has opened for business. Located in Penwortham’s refurbished Coach House on Hurst Grange Park, the cafe offers breakfast, lunch, homemade cakes and barista coffees. With funding from South Ribble Borough Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the site was brought back as a focal point for park visitors.

A Kirkham restaurant boss has invested in the town’s future by opening a new local eatery. Restaurateur Andrew Booker and his son, James, have opened the fine dining establishment The Old Bank on Poulton Street. They have transformed the former Midland/HSBC bank premises into a 44-cover restaurant serving British cuisine, all created using locally sourced ingredients. The Old Bank has been the talk of the town ever since a griffin sculpture appeared above the door to the premises during lockdown. Modelled in part on the old Midland bank logo, Archie, affectionately nicknamed after being created at Archforge blacksmiths, has become a famous local landmark.

At £35 per head, you can enjoy unlimited* Pintxos, speciality Paella and Cava from mid-November every Thursday, Friday and Saturday! Or while you soak up the atmosphere try a Spanish beer or Basque wines such as the light, sparkling Txakoli. Pintxos are small bite-sized skewers featuring some of the finest delicacies famous in the Basque region. Created as ‘food art’ they are designed to be enjoyed while socialising and are the perfect party partner to friends and fizz.

The Concept

Bar Pintxos is the dream of city entrepreneur Anthony Smith, the man behind the exclusive, charity, secret supper club Six Seats. Dishes include grilled fig and goats cheese, manchego cheese and serrano hams, stuffed mushrooms with brandy, garlic prawns all freshly made each morning. “San Sebastian has more top Michelin starred restaurants than anywhere else. The food from the region is the best and I wanted to bring a taste of that, and its characteristic atmosphere to the people of Preston.

“People can come in at lunchtime and order a drink, along with a pintxos, or they can get a couple, and pay for the number of skewers left on their plate at the end like they do in Spain. “The pintxos are a fusion of tastes – inventive, exciting. I am using authentic continental produce but will also be championing the best local produce too.”

The Team

The Bar Pintxos team can’t wait to welcome you. Bringing flamenco to Preston’s Flag Market, you won’t meet a friendlier crew who are on hand to make sure you have the best time. Continuing the authentic vibe, you will be looked after by our eclectic mix of English and Spanish staff. Offering a very warm welcome they will keep the drinks flowing and talk you through the menu of Pintxos so you can be sure to try everything.

LEISURELY LUNCH… I have to confess it’s been some time since Liz and I had lunch at Mitton Hall – so we were thrilled to be invited and very much looking forward to eating from a great looking menu, writes Tedd Walmsley

afternoon tea or lunch themselves. I must at this point heap praise on the front of house team – given the recent difficulties of recruitment and retention in hospitality, it was refreshing to be looked after by two young ladies so professional, yet friendly and engaging. My message to the James’ Places management team would be – look after them well.

M

itton Hall is of course synonymous with weddings and deserves its reputation as one of the Ribble Valley’s very best venues. I’m sure, like us, you’ve enjoyed the stunning location, food, drink, organisation and service, which makes it such a perfect space for that very special day. Turning right at reception we were shown into a delightful dining room with starched white tablecloths, flowers and a lovely intimate vibe. We arrived deliberately at 1.45pm for a late lunch and joined a host of other diners who were enjoying either

So onto the food, the menu was wide and varied and it took me a while to choose. I noticed two of Liz’s favourite dishes on there and for once she didn’t go off-piste. A starter of crushed avocado on toasted focaccia complemented with a perfectly poached egg and tomato salsa – I’m told it was utterly delicious. A hearty dish of king prawn and tomato linguine soon followed and was declared a triumph – packed with prawns and a chilli kick, as Liz said: “What’s not to like?” I started with a salt marsh lamb croquette with small sweet, pickled clams. Wow! I could have eaten a plateful of these little

beauties. With so much to choose from and a sweet treat to follow, this is an excellent menu – timeless classics, steaks from the grill and lighter option means there’s something for everyone. I rarely eat pudding, but temptation proved too strong and I succumbed to a decadent cheesecake – what a way to end a long leisurely lunch. As we know we are blessed with choice in the Ribble Valley when it comes to eating out and James’ Places themselves have some cracking options across their portfolio. I did notice that the Sunday roasts were back from October – I can picture now, the roaring fires, rosy cheeks and the finest cuts of meat and vegetables served on a cold and possibly wet winter Sunday. Check out social media and the James’ Places website for all that’s on offer across the group – but especially at Mitton Hall. n

GOOD READ 99 Red Balloons Elisabeth Carpenter 99 Red Balloons is the debut novel from Preston author Elisabeth Carpenter, also known as Libby, whose fifth novel, The Vacancy, was published in August 2021. It was one of my summer reads (is it just me who finds thrillers chillier in the sunshine?) and it’s a twisty, turny domestic thriller which begins with a missing child but leads us down a winding path of family secrets, loss, betrayal and identity. Eight-year-old Grace goes missing after school and her aunt Stephanie can only look on helplessly as her family is shattered, as they all deal with the worry, frustration and creeping dread. Meanwhile, Maggie, whose own granddaughter went missing decades before, is forced to relive the loss and trauma of losing a loved one as she is unable to ignore the parallels between the two cases. As the Police investigate, the dynamics of both families are threatened as hidden secrets and lies are uncovered. There are four narrators in the book – Maggie, whose sadness both smothers and strengthens her, Stephanie, who tries to make sense of her own past and present and then the voices of the missing child and their abductor. The voices are all tinged with loneliness and fear which links them to one other and highlights human frailty and the need for security and love. The author’s characterisation is quite subtle and nuanced and there is a real authenticity in parts but some characters are more well formed than others. Maggie is particularly well written and sympathetic and the reader is drawn into her quiet half-life as she is unable to let go of the past. The plot moves along with pace and tension and whilst some readers might find the jumps from different voices and times confusing, it adds to the uncertainty and increasing panic as the family waits for an end to their nightmare. There are also some red herrings and sub plots to keep the reader guessing, but the author deftly pulls all the strands together, whilst avoiding the tendency of some books of this genre to tie everything up in a neat bow at the end or to become a rushed melodrama. The author is able to balance the drama of a crime with the realness of human relationships and family fragility. It’s an intriguing, complex page turner, full of family drama and human emotion, rather than a psychological, detective novel, and an impressive debut novel. Libby’s other books are now on my ‘To Read’ list and I’m looking forward to reading more fast paced, clever and authentic offerings from this local author. n

ongridge Gallery was launched in 1985 and has built an enviable reputation for bringing highly collectable artwork from the country’s most respected artists to the region. Since October 2000 it has been owned by Alistair Sheret and now after 21 years, Alistair and wife Caroline have handed over the reins to Caroline’s son Nick Smith, supported by his fiancée Sophie Hart. “Nick took over the business in June and began a really exciting time for the gallery. Since 1985, the gallery has only had two owners and has an enviable track record of providing a great service to the people of Lancashire,” says Alistair. “We’re delighted to see Nick and Sophie returning to their roots and building the business. It’s great to see two young professionals coming home to the Ribble Valley with all their enthusiasm and plans for both the gallery and life within the Longridge community.” Former Preston Grasshopper Nick explained: “During lockdown I spent time

learning the business from Alistair. We will be keeping the essence of the gallery the same, maintaining the excellent customer service, high quality art framing and showcasing outstanding artists. We are

looking at different areas of the business on which we can build, such as utilising new technology and social media. We will have a lot of the same fantastic artists as before and we are also excited to be bringing in some new artists that we think our

Working with customers to create the solution that’s perfect for the piece in question is a real joy. I

t would be a lucky person indeed who had navigated the last eighteen months without worries around family, jobs, finances, or mental health. The crisis has brought to a head many everyday stresses we place ourselves under, thanks to life’s increasing pace and pressure. In a month where mental health is given the prominence it deserves, artist Carla Raads is driving for open, honest and supportive conversations about stress and depression. It’s also intrinsically linked to the unique and very hands-on way she creates her artwork, as I am to discover. Born and raised on the Eastern Cape coast of South Africa, Carla’s family knew they could always find her on the beach, as she describes: “In thrall to the sound, the powerful thunder of the rising tide.” Moving aged 16 to the UK with her family and settling on the Fylde coast, the

NOT DROWNING, BUT WAVING THE LYTHAM ARTIST PAINTING UP A STORM TO PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH With rising mental health issues exacerbated by the Covid pandemic creating a perfect storm for an already overstretched NHS, Kate Bowyer meets Carla Raads, whose very personal journey through depression has led to her creating her own ‘perfect storms’ – on canvas

familiarity of the sea helped Carla feel at home, and sealed her lifelong love of the wildest elements of nature. Studying fine art at Blackpool College, Carla went on to study design and interiors at Manchester Metropolitan University, after which her striking looks were spotted by a modelling scout. The unplanned and high-octane 12-year modelling, acting and presenting career which followed led to her paintbrushes lying fallow for longer and longer periods.

I’M HOPING BY SHARING MY PERSONAL JOURNEY I CAN HELP WOMEN FIND THE STRENGTH TO FIND THEIR OWN VOICE, SELF-WORTH, AND PATH TO HEALTH Looking at the powerful, vivid sea and skyscapes gracing the walls of her light-filled Lytham home, it’s hard to envisage the dark path that drew Carla back to rediscovering her creativity ten years later. Describing that moment, Carla simply holds up her hands.

“These are my only paintbrushes and I like to say that makes them bigger than anyone else’s! It certainly wasn’t planned, in 2017, I was in a loving, stable relationship, happily pregnant, but then I sank into severe postnatal depression. Something so many women suffer from, I really want to help remove the stigma that can still cloak women getting help. Outside you present a ‘front’ of coping – being a mum, breast feeding, robotically putting meals on the table, but inside you are totally lost, and terrified.

I CONTINUE TO PAINT THROUGH INSTINCT, USING MY BARE HANDS TO CHANNEL THE ENERGY OF THE ELEMENTS “It’s like being lost in a crowd. My husband and family were, and continue to be, incredibly supportive, and I had a great group of mums around me, but I think that’s what women especially do, we blame ourselves for failing unrealistic high standards, and tell ourselves we’re undeserving of help. Because I had bonded with my son, I didn’t even realise this crippling tiredness, anxiety and disconnect could be postnatal depression, I blamed hormones and my own inadequacies – sounds familiar?” I find myself nodding. “I’m hoping by sharing my personal journey I can help women find the strength to find their own voice, self-worth, and path to health. In the depths of it, one night I couldn’t sleep and was overtaken by an urgent desire to paint. After 10 years, I had no oils or canvases, I used some old flooring, and a pot of emulsion left over from the decorating! I never even looked for brushes, instinctively I just plunged my hands into the pot and spread them across the canvas.” Carla’s first paintings were of dark, stormy, encroaching seas: “I continue to paint

through instinct, using my bare hands to channel the energy of the elements,” she says, leading me into her basement studio, where she worked first when son Clifton was in bed, and now while he is at school. “It was only when I realised the storms had given way to vibrant, powerful waves and sun-gilded, scudding clouds, I realised my vision was literally, like my health, looking up.”

Now a full-time artist, exhibiting her work via Instagram also gives Carla a platform to share her story and connect, inspire and help other women: “I’m lucky to have my art, but I don’t consider myself special, or a victim, I feel more like a warrior, as we all can be! I don’t regret anything, including my time away from art, I would not be the artist and person I am without those life experiences.

“Modelling in itself is an art form, you are a creative tool helping realise someone’s vision. It also taught me discipline, and the thick skin you need as an artist, just like any self-employed person, or anyone faced with significant life and career changes, post-Covid.” They say a picture paints a thousand words, but what message would Carla choose? “That everyone deserves to be well, mentally as well as physically. Value yourself enough to ask for help, dream big and remember the dark periods don’t last. Storms can be a blessing and the light will eventually shine through. Keep pushing forward and keep focussed on something that you love. It might be art, singing or even just getting out for a run – but whatever your thing is, know you are not alone, you’re amazing and worth it.” n

WHY INVEST IN PRESTON? Stuart Williams, of Thirlmere Deacon Property Investors, explains why Preston is at the very top of the list of the best places to live in the UK

Young professionals are increasingly attracted to living in the city due to exciting job opportunities, high quality of life and a lower cost of living than other top cities around the UK.

T

he third largest city in the North West region of England and the largest city in Lancashire, Preston offers outstanding transport connections, a thriving higher education sector, a growing economy and is the subject of an extensive investment programme. Though not as well-known as its neighbours Preston is set to follow in the footsteps of nearby investment hotspots Manchester and Liverpool – savvy investors have begun securing property in certain areas of the city in a bid to get ahead of the curve. Though it might have been overlooked 10 or 20 years ago, the local government have made huge strides focusing on improving the city which has seen its economy take off. Having been voted the most improved city in Britain in 2018 by accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers the city is showing no signs of slowing down. Preston is forward thinking and business friendly, the city has a unique charm and is incredibly proud of its industrial history.

SAVVY INVESTORS HAVE BEGUN SECURING PROPERTY IN CERTAIN AREAS OF THE CITY IN A BID TO GET AHEAD OF THE CURVE Key employers include the university, the NHS and advanced technical manufacturing businesses such as BAE systems who have two sites locally. The type of businesses operating in the area and the jobs are attracting highly skilled workers to the city. Preston enjoys a very high rate of employment which over the last few years has remained to be around 80 per cent, the UK average is around 75 per cent. According to the Centre for Cities, Cities Outlook report for 2020, Preston

continues to be in the top 10 cities with the highest employment rate when compared to cities across the rest of the UK and is the only city not within the southern area of the UK to feature in the top 10. The high employment rate is a clear positive for investors due to the high proportion of prospective tenants in work. According to Preston City Council, the city’s population is growing more rapidly than other cities. Between mid-2001 and mid-2017, Preston had an increase in the population of 8.4 per cent, which was greater than the overall North West region’s population growth at 7.2 per cent. Another driver of the rental market is The University of Central Lancashire, one of the UK’s largest universities, which has a student body of around 33,000 along with thousands of teaching and administrative staff. The university is continuing to grow with a £200 million transformation plan in place for the Preston Campus including several major projects including the Engineering Innovation Centre which is set to cement Lancashire’s position as a national centre of excellence for advanced engineering, manufacturing and aerospace. With the investment into the city, top university and the huge appeal of the city generally, the population is set to increase further over the coming years pushing rental demand even higher. n
