A BLOOMING LONG CAREER

Margaret Mason has been immersed in the flower business since 1956 and her shop on Friargate has been a vibrant fixture since 1961. Today, at 87 years old, Margaret career continues to thrive, as she describes to Alma Stewart. Photography: Michael Porter

There are not many people that are not familiar with the bright yellow shop and vans belonging to Margaret Mason florists. From the one room shop she rented in Preston city centre in 1961 to the humungous barn style hub of business in the countryside of Warton, Margaret’s floristry skills have taken her all over the world, but Freckleton is where her heart lies.

Margaret was born at Bottom’s Farm, belonging to her parents which is near the river Ribble, about a mile from Freckleton’s village centre. Margaret said: “My family have farmed around here for generations with my grandfather coming to Lower House Farm and my aunt lived at Bush Farm. My nephew now runs Hillock Farm opposite our barn on Hillock Lane now my older brother has retired. My parents also expected me to go into farming, but I had other ideas.”

Growing up in rural Freckleton, Margaret became fascinated by the flowers that grew on the fields and hedgerows near the farm and that is where her passion for flowers began.

Perhaps one of the main reasons the village of Freckleton is recognised, is the air disaster that took place on 23rd August 1944 in which an American Consolidated B-24 Liberator aeroplane, based at RAF Warton, crashed during a test flight. Extreme weather conditions caused the crash and the death

of all three crewmen aboard the aircraft and 58 individuals on the ground, including 38 children aged four to six as the plane crashed into the village school. In the school that day, was Margaret Mason: “I remember it like it was yesterday even though I was only eight at the time. I remember the storm and the fire and running across the field to escape,” she recalled. “And afterwards, it was never really spoken about, but that’s how things were then.”

At 14, Margaret started her other passion –playing the organ in Freckleton’s Methodist Church, a duty she still enjoys to this day. In fact, in the corner of her flower barn sits a baby grand piano where Margaret will often sit and play.

MARGARET BECAME FASCINATED BY THE FLOWERS THAT GREW ON THE FIELDS AND HEDGEROWS NEAR THE FARM AND THAT IS WHERE HER PASSION FOR FLOWERS BEGAN

Following her high school education at St Annes College for Girls, Margaret went to work for Forshaw’s Florists in Preston where she served five happy years before embarking on her own business journey: “My father was horrified that I wanted to do floristry. He would have preferred me to work on the farm, but once I made the leap on my own and proved myself, he bought me my first van, bright yellow of course. Mr Forshaw was a fantastic boss and I learned so much from him and kept in touch throughout my career.”

From her one rented room under the Duke of York pub on Friargate, Margaret had to climb two flights to get water but after five years in business, she was able to buy the optician’s two doors down at number 85 and eventually numbers 84 and 86 and join all three together. The shop remains still, though is now only used for window displays as in 2015, she acquired Kirkby’s Florists as an add-on to her existing business. She already had a barn just outside Freckleton which was used as a workshop for large events and storage. As part of Interflora, Margaret signed up for courses that saw her travel to countries such as Japan and Australia learning about different species. She also took part in a number of competitions and represented Great Britain in a competition in Holland: “I was in the top five out of 13 districts. I’ve also created displays at the Chelsea Flower Show twice,” she said, “Also, at that time,

OVER THE YEARS, MARGARET MASON HAS BECOME RENOWNED FOR FLORAL EXCELLENCE NO MATTER THE OCCASION

women didn’t go to work so I would host demonstrations on how to create flower displays for up to 200 women at a time. I got to know a lot of people through this and many of them became my customers.”

But one of her highlights at this time was not really flower related. Margaret

explained: “At an Interflora conference on the South Coast, I got to play the organ for hundreds of delegates. It may not seem much to other people, but to me it was a great honour.”

Among Margaret’s many venues she has dressed, you will find London’s Grosvenor House Hotel and the Natural History Museum, Blackpool Tower, Cambridge University, Stirling Castle and the Royal box at Liverpool Philharmonic where Margaret met the late Queen, on one of three occasions.

“When I started in this industry, we never counted time, we just got on with it doing what was necessary. I would need to set off

localfocus 13

very early in the morning to buy flowers in Manchester and this was in the days before motorways so it was quite a long round trip. Then we would put in some long hours making sure that everything was just right.”

A LOT OF MY TEAM ARE PEOPLE I HAVE GOT TO KNOW OVER THE YEARS AND I DON’T REFER TO THEM AS STAFF, THEY ARE JUST FRIENDS I WORK WITH

Over the years, Margaret Mason has become renowned for floral excellence no matter the occasion. This comes with the personal service of getting to know the customer’s needs in order to create the perfect floral choices. In the last couple of months, Margaret has added an extension to the barn in order to house the vast array of props and displays for hire as the business moves with the times and trends. Here you will find a vast

array of statues, archways, furniture, artificial trees… simply stunning props to suit any important occasion.

And when it comes to her 30+ team, Margaret says she just collects people: “A lot of my team are people I have got to know over the years and I don’t refer to them as staff, they are just friends I work with. For

example, I used to do the arrangements for the local banks and I got to know the area manager Alan Lafferty. When he retired, he said he’d come and work with me for six months and that was 20 years ago!”

So, as she moves into her 68th year in floristry, what is the secret of Margaret’s success? “Don’t get married!” She said. “But seriously, it’s all about what the customer wants and what is coming up next, keeping an eye on the future. You can be really good at something and make a business out of it, but you have to know about the pounds and pence and move with the times.

“Health is the main thing. Eating well and having a purpose in life keeps you going as does being with other people because you can’t do everything on your own and why would you want to? I haven’t lasted this long in business without the help of others.

And one last burning question I have to ask – what is Margaret’s favourite flower? “Bluebells,” she answers. n

“I have sometimes had to run up to their workshop late on a Friday afternoon needing a piece of equipment fixing – and they always try their hardest to help.

“Mowerpower are experts in their field and consistently offer a knowledgeable and honest service. They help me to do my job well and I wouldn’t consider going anywhere else!” n

PAVING THE WAY

TO A REVOLUTION

When it comes to creating a lasting first impression and that all-important kerb appeal, few things rival the allure of quality stone paving

Aside from its natural beauty, one of the inherent advantages of using stone paving in any hard landscaping project such as gardens and driveways, is its strength, durability and its ability to retain its pristine appearance if well maintained.

However, research carried out by the team at Bannister Hall highlighted that it is not necessarily the cost of the stone that is a barrier to it being used on a specific project, but more often the lengthy installation time, resulting in higher labour costs than alternative materials such as resin, coupled with the availability of skilled installers, which can sometimes be prohibitive.

For over 20 years Bannister Hall Landscaping Supplies and Plant Nurseries has grown to become the North West’s largest single-source supplier of plants and landscaping materials.

As landscaping and paving contractors with 30 years’ experience, supported by 19 years of supplying landscaping products to the trade

and more recently directly to the public, they lead the way in the industry.

Continuous investment and development into creating new and exciting products has resulted in the creation of the PietraPave paving system, unique and exclusive to Bannister Hall, which confidently delivers on every level – visually, practically, financially and ecologically throughout the supply chain including designers, contractors, the end user and the environment.

PietraPave brings natural stone to the forefront of paving by supplying beautiful

natural stone setts bonded to a revolutionary durable and robust backing mat. The mat allows the stone to be laid with maximum accuracy and efficiency, significantly reduced manual handling and delivering astonishing results at a fraction of the price when compared to ordinary methods – making

DEFINITELY A PRODUCT I WOULD RECOMMEND…

“It was the first time our landscaping team had laid PietraPave. Following the detailed guidance provided, using PietraPave couldn’t have been simpler. The speed of the installation was truly outstanding compared to regular paving methods, for such a complex design it literally saved weeks – not days. I very quickly realised my initial reservation was completely unfounded after seeing the accuracy and quality of the finished job. PietraPave is definitely a product I would recommend.”

Rawcliffe –

natural stone a real option once more for both small and large-scale projects.

Think mosaic tile sheets – but on a much bigger scale, it can be used on small residential projects as well as in large scale commercial developments as can be seen at the Flower Bowl entertainment complex in Garstang where a bespoke natural stone motif was created to match exactly with the huge abstract floral designs on the side of this inspirational, contemporary building.

THE HIGH-QUALITY PIETRAPAVE SYSTEM WAS LAID AND FINISHED JUST FOUR-AND-A-HALF HOURS AFTER BEING DELIVERED TO LONGTON PARISH CHURCH. COMPLETING THIS PROJECT WITH AN ALTERNATIVE PAVING SYSTEM WOULD HAVE TAKEN UP TO TWO WEEKS

Paul Kenworthy from Gardenscene

Linear, fan and circular designs are all offered in a range of colours and finishes to ensure there is something for everyone and there is a large variety of styles to suit a multitude of paving schemes and personal preferences. Bespoke paving designs using a CAD service allows paving to be taken to the limits of the designer’s imagination offering a truly revolutionary service. All PietraPave designs can be tweaked and customised to suit a particular scheme – the colour, finish and thickness of the stone can all be modified to suit the setting and terrain and elevations.

It’s got to be seen to be believed. Richard Hull, Sales Manager at Bannister Hall landscaping supplies says: “We are certainly seeing the trend shift from homeowners wanting resin bound driveways to now desiring the durability and aesthetics of natural stone block paving, mainly due to the revolutionary fast installation time of PietraPave and its cost-saving benefits.” n

Shawn, of Good Good Graffiti and who also goes by the tag name Reasm_one, has been a graffiti/street artist for 15 years is well known in the Preston area. He has created well-known murals including ‘Mother’ at Hogarth’s, Church Street, ‘Betsy Leigh’ at the Wheatsheaf, Ashton and ‘Rose in the Yellow Dress’ on the side of the Northern Way pub, Friargate. He focuses on large-scale murals that celebrate Preston’s history and culture, a tribute to the Preston docks and the town’s rich textile history.

Tracy Leeming, Marketing Manager at Loom Loft, said: “As soon as we decided to open our new store at the docks we identified a space that was perfect for a large mural and wanted to work with Shawn as we were familiar with his amazing work. As a company we pride ourselves on sourcing our products from Lancashire suppliers and manufacturers and so we were excited to approach and work with a local artist on our venture.”

Shawn asked members of the ‘Preston Past and Present’ Facebook group for their stories of the docks and its rich industrial heritage. The final design reflects some of the stories

including Fyffes bananas – an importer to the docks, the Manxman – a famous floating nightclub on the docks and the No 10 Victoria Warehouse building.

IT’S BEEN A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH LOOM LOFT, GIVING ME A LOT OF CREATIVE FREEDOM AND BRINGING THE BEST OUT OF A SPACE WHERE YOU WOULDN’T NORMALLY EXPECT A MURAL

Shawn said: “I was excited when Loom Loft approached me, due to the previous works they had seen. When I heard the rough brief,

I knew I wanted to incorporate the Docklands into the mural and pay homage to its rich history. I am unaware of any retail stores in the UK that have large-scale murals indoors, making it a unique space. It’s been a pleasure to work with Loom Loft, giving me a lot of creative freedom and bringing the best out of a space where you wouldn’t normally expect a mural. I can’t wait for the people of Preston to see it – it’ll be the perfect backdrop to showcase what Loom Loft does.”

The new store is a hub of innovation and style, offering an extensive range of trend setting and an eclectic mix of sofas, dining sets, occasional furniture and home accessories. This will be Loom Loft’s fourth store and will also include its second Loft Bistro with a chic industrial feel. A diverse menu is crafted by a talented culinary team which is perfect for informal breakfasts, lunches, business meetings and catching up with friends. n

SAND STORM

The serene, comforting and tranquil colour palette of sand tones is emerging as a prominent trend for 2024

Reflective of sandy beaches and desert landscapes, these hues can be seamlessly integrated into flooring, accessories and surface finishes, imparting a subdued and soothing aesthetic.

We take a look at how the latest home products are helping homeowners achieve this on-trend style.

Texture plays a vital role in preventing sand-inspired colour schemes from appearing monotonous.

Sand tones contribute to crafting tranquil and serene spaces, making them a popular selection for bedrooms. This palette can serve as a striking contrast against bold hues or seamlessly blend with neutral schemes. TEXTURE PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN PREVENTING SAND-INSPIRED COLOUR SCHEMES FROM APPEARING MONOTONOUS

Matte and soft finishes in sand-inspired colour palettes can help homeowners create a feeling of space. Pairing this look with stone or bleached-wood floors can uplift this scheme and makes the most of a home’s natural lighting to give an airy appeal.

Kitchens and dining areas have not escaped the trend for calming sand tones. Bleached and natural wood cabinets can be paired with soft stone-effect floors to create a welcoming space. Luxury vinyl tiles offer a practical and budget-friendly alternative to solid stone, ensuring easy maintenance in high-traffic kitchen and dining spaces.

Whatever tones of sand you choose, this colour palette can be both calming and contrasting. From light sandstone hues to deep chocolate browns, this is a colour scheme that presents many and varied options. n

Jenny Clarke, director at Stringers, said: “We wanted a concrete effect floor which was both warm and contemporary, but also fairly simple to keep the look uncluttered, as it’s a busy area. We looked at a few different shades in situ to allow us to consider lighting and other shop fit elements. The team at Gainsborough were so helpful with their advice and support.”

Stringers opted for Amtico Spacia Monument Concrete which offers exceptional quality, durability and performance. Part of the decision was based on which flooring worked best alongside the existing floor adjacent to the gift shop, so it would create a natural flow as customers move from zone to zone.

STYLE ON THE SHOP FLOOR

Preston’s Gainsborough Flooring recently had the pleasure of fitting a new floor in one of the Fylde’s favourite department stores as described to writer Meena McDonald. Photography: Michael Porter

Stringers Department Store in Lytham is currently having some renovation work and we were asked to install new flooring in their beautiful gift shop area. The family-run independent department and home store is an iconic part of Lytham and their stunning range of products and unique shopping experience draws people from across the Fylde Coast and beyond.

You can imagine just how thrilled we were to be approached about their flooring!

We liaised with Creative SPARC Architects in Lytham to discuss the design style they were looking to achieve so that we could deliver flooring that matched the stylish look of the store, whilst being mindful of the footfall

in the gift area and ensuring the flooring was robust enough to withstand this.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU!

In the hands of a skilled architect, a simple conversation can blossom into a transformative design that reflects the aspirations, lifestyle and personalities of the building’s occupants, writes Sarah Ulyatt

When it comes to the craft of designing spaces that truly resonate with their clients, BCAE Architects stands out for their dedication to tailoring every detail to meet each client’s unique needs and preferences. It’s this commitment that sets them apart from others.

BCAE Architects, established by co-directors Ben Craven and Arron El-Ammar, offer bespoke designs for innovative contemporary house extensions, unique eco homes, rural barn conversions, home adaptations, new build larger scale residential developments and commercial property conversions across the North West.

“Buildings should be designed first and foremost around their occupants and if I’m asked ‘why choose BCAE?’ then getting to know our clients’ needs is the answer and is what we pride ourselves on,” said Arron. “We make our conversations all about you, so that we can structure our designs to create spaces that not only look beautiful but also work as a whole and reflect you and your lifestyle.”

OUR DESIGNS CREATE SPACES THAT NOT ONLY LOOK BEAUTIFUL BUT ALSO REFLECT YOU AND YOUR LIFESTYLE

“We want to know about you… your hobbies, what you enjoy doing, how you want your project to make you feel, how you use your existing space, what designs you like. From whether you have kids and dogs to whether you love to play golf or host a party. From that

we can understand you and your needs and then together create a brief for your project (so you don’t think we’re just being nosy –you can ask us the same questions as well!).”

From creating a cozy reading nook, to a family space to gather and entertain, a minimalist design to a more traditional aesthetic (or a combination of both), Arron, Ben and their team will make the space work for you. It’s what they do – turning conversations into reality. Buildings and spaces that are not only visually stunning but tailored to you.

Be inspired!

Take a look at how BCAE have worked their magic for previous clients:

“Ben understood our vision from the first design appointment and his drawings took our lifestyle into full consideration. Arron and Ben have stayed in contact throughout the build, ensuring any amendments are in line with the aesthetic we want for our finished home.”

“Arron has been a fantastic support since we embarked on our renovation. He was on hand to answer our questions and made the design process really enjoyable. We couldn’t recommend BCAE more.” n

A PASSION FOR

FLORAL FASHION

The history of florals in fashion spans centuries. From the intricate patterns of the 18th century to the bold designs of contemporary fashion, florals have remained a fashion favourite, continually evolving to reflect tastes and trends.

Throughout fashion history, numerous designers have incorporated florals into their collections. In the aftermath of World War II, the fashion industry experienced a resurgence of creativity and optimism, with designers embracing florals as a symbol of renewal and femininity.

Christian Dior, with his ‘New Look’ collection in 1947, revolutionised fashion by introducing

voluminous skirts, nipped-in waists, and an abundance of floral prints that celebrated traditional femininity. Similarly, British brand Horrockses Fashion became renowned for its vibrant floral dresses that resonated with women seeking a fresh, joyful aesthetic.

Founded in 1791 in Preston, Horrockses initially gained prominence as a textile manufacturer, producing high-quality cotton fabrics. However, it wasn’t until the postWorld War II era that Horrockses expanded into fashion, launching its ready-to-wear clothing line under the name Horrockses Fashions Ltd in 1946.

Horrockses Fashions quickly became synonymous with feminine designs

featuring bold and vibrant floral prints. The brand’s dresses gained popularity for their flattering ‘New Look’ silhouettes and eye-catching patterns. Horrockses’ floral dresses embodied the spirit of post-war optimism and captured the essence of a new era of prosperity and leisure.

What set Horrockses Fashions apart was its collaboration with prominent artists and designers. Textile designers such as Joyce Badrocke and Alastair Morton were among those who created unique floral patterns for Horrockses dresses, infusing them with artistic flair and innovation. Joyce Badrocke worked at Horrockses Fashions headquarters in Hanover Square in London for seven years between 1951 and 1958. Alistair Morton had previously designed for Edinburgh Weavers during the 1930s and 40s.

THROUGHOUT FASHION HISTORY, NUMEROUS DESIGNERS HAVE

INCORPORATED FLORALS INTO THEIR

COLLECTIONS

One of the most iconic moments in Horrockses Fashion’s history came in 1953 when the young Queen Elizabeth II chose a selection of cotton Horrockses Fashions dresses to wear on her Commonwealth tour. The aforementioned designer Joyce Badrocke designed a tulip floral pattern in blue and yellow that epitomised the brand’s signature aesthetic of elegance and sophistication.

Throughout the 1950s, Horrockses continued to produce collections featuring a myriad of floral designs, ranging from dainty blossoms to bold botanicals. The brand’s dresses became coveted by women of all ages, symbolising the charm and femininity of the post-war era.

Horrockses Fashions’ legacy lives on through vintage enthusiasts, fashion historians and museums who continue to admire and collect their iconic floral dresses. The Harris Museum is lucky to have the largest collection of Horrockses Fashions dresses in the UK. The collection includes numerous designs by

Today, Horrockses dresses are prized for their timeless appeal and serve as a reminder of a bygone era of post-World War II fashion when floral prints reigned supreme in fashion, capturing the imagination and hearts of women around the world.

Proof that florals for spring are indeed groundbreaking. n

SKIN CANCER SOLUTION

Mohs surgery is the most effective technique for removing common skin cancers, we discover what makes it the gold-standard and meet a doctor leading the field

Highly-regarded Consultant

Dermatologist, Dr Arif Aslam, has made the prevention and treatment of skin cancer his life’s work. His dedication and passion have resulted in him working internationally due to the high demand for his specialist surgical skills. In 2021, he brought his unique skill-set home to the people of the North.

Arif is a double fellowship-trained Mohs Micrographic Surgeon. One of only 14 UKbased members of the prestigious American College of Mohs Surgery.

Mohs surgery is considered the goldstandard for treating common types of skin cancer. Done in stages, including immediate microscopic review while the patient waits, all cancerous cells are removed and healthy tissue is le untouched. All while leaving the smallest possible scar.

Mohs surgery has the lowest cancer recurrence rates and highest cure ratesup to 99% for primary lesions and 98% for reoccurring lesions unsuccessfully treated by other methods. It also has the best cosmetic results of any skin cancer treatment.

“It was amazing doing high volume Mohs surgery in New Zealand and Australia where they have the highest incidence of skin cancer, but I always wanted to return home to the north of England and set up my own surgical practice,” says Arif.

“My friend and colleague Dr Miguel Montero, a highly-regarded skin specialist, heard I was back and asked me to consider joining his team. I jumped at the opportunity. What better place than Miguel’s beautiful Medical Skin Clinic, located privately within the Crow Wood Resort in Burnley, to ful l my ambition of having a local clinic o ering Mohs and advanced dermatology services.”

Dr Montero commented: “I’ve diagnosed

and treated non-cancerous lesions for many years in my clinic and in the NHS.

“Patients with more serious abnormalities previously required a referral to a specialist dermatologist, which can be a lengthy and worrying process. So, when I heard Arif was

MOHS SURGERY IS CONSIDERED THE GOLD-STANDARD FOR TREATING COMMON TYPES OF SKIN CANCER

returning to the UK and looking to set up his own practice, I was straight on the phone,” says Miguel.

“Lesion removal is di cult to obtain via the NHS, especially in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Even if you get to see your GP, there are few with a dermatology speciality. Sadly, some serious cases get missed or caught too late.

MOHS SURGERY HAS THE LOWEST CANCER RECURRENCE RATES AND HIGHEST CURE RATESUP TO 99%

“With Arif on board, we are helping more people, giving them safe, fast and e ective private dermatology treatment that eliminates unnecessary wait times and worry.”

“Miguel and his wife Gill, who is Clinic Director, have thoroughly spoiled me,” Arif says with his trademark warm and friendly smile. “I have an excellent purpose-designed

Mohs suite and lab within their clinic, where I work with their team to carry out my Mohs surgery.

“Because it involves a special multistep process, Mohs surgery is slightly more expensive but more cost-e ective than other skin cancer treatments. Health insurance plans also cover it. For patients seeking a traditional approach, I also remove noncancerous and cancerous skin lesions using long-established surgical methods.”

Skin cancer, whilst rare, is on the increase, but should you get a diagnosis, it’s more treatable than ever. Dr Aslam encourages everyone to keep on top of their skin health because early detection leads to a better diagnosis. ■

“We know what people enjoy and we know what they have come to expect. In terms of turnover, square footage and the number of visitors we are anticipating, this is arguably the biggest and best spa in the UK.”

The latest development began three years ago when the need for expansion became apparent. Andrew and his management team, collaborated with architects, builders and spa and leisure specialists to design his vision for the future of Crow Wood’s resort, choosing the very best, world-class equipment and materials.

Today, this stunning redevelopment is almost ready. The new spa extension will seamlessly integrate with the existing facilities. Crow Wood is not afraid of investment having recently invested £2 million in its fabulous health and fitness club which includes dedicated studios for yoga, dance and aerobics plus one of the most technologically advanced spinning studios in the UK.

The re-imagined Woodland Spa is set to attract visitors from all over the UK with the emphasis on quality and pure luxury at its heart.

Speaking of the development, Andrew adds:

“It’s all about the guest journey and experience,” says Crow Wood’s Andrew Brown. “The new spa will be more impressive, even in comparison to what we had before.

EXPERIENCE PURE LUXURY…

The Woodland Spa, which is launching in July, is inviting guests to register to be one of the very first to experience it when it opens its doors. thewoodlandspa.com

“We have the capacity to double guest numbers in line with the sheer size of the spa. However, we won’t be doing that, instead we see this as another opportunity to enhance our guest experience, ensuring that we maintain an intimate and exclusive atmosphere. The aim of this project has always been to produce a world-class spa and offer affordable exclusivity –and that’s exactly what we have achieved.” n

The latest non-invasive treatments hold the secret to naturally youthful skin and revitalised self-esteem. Emma Pearce, the wonderworker behind EMA Skin Aesthetics, puts a warm, personal emphasis on all her inspirational treatments, writes Kate Bowyer

urgent treatments or those preferring a more flexible schedule. Private healthcare also offers access to a broader range of treatment options and specialists, including innovative treatments not widely available on the NHS.

While private healthcare is often associated with higher costs compared to NHS care, the availability of insurance options can make it more affordable.

Providers often prioritise personalised care, comfortable facilities and a more patient-centred approach because of reduced pressure. Patients may benefit from amenities such as private rooms and bathrooms, shorter hospital stays, a range of menu choices and more comprehensive follow-up care.

Treatments such as cosmetic surgery, fertility treatments and certain types of rehabilitation and physiotherapy may not be available through the NHS and so prove popular and more convenient for many.

CHOOSING PRIVATE HEALTHCARE

With a host of services available from dentistry to GPs, many people are choosing to use private healthcare for a variety of reasons including treatments not available through the National Health Service

Private healthcare in the UK plays a significant role alongside the National Health Service (NHS), offering individuals an alternative option for medical treatment and services. This sector encompasses a range of treatments provided by private hospitals, clinics, specialists and insurers, catering for those who seek faster access to healthcare, specialised treatments or enhanced amenities.

Services encompass a wide array of offerings,

including private hospitals, diagnostic and treatment centres, dentists, physiotherapists, counselling services, specialist consultations, elective surgeries and more. Patients can access a range of medical services outside of the NHS, paying either through private health insurance or out-of-pocket.

PRIVATE HEALTHCARE IN THE UK SERVES AS A VALUABLE COMPLEMENT TO THE NHS, PROVIDING INDIVIDUALS WITH CHOICE, FLEXIBILITY AND EXPEDITED ACCESS TO MEDICAL SERVICES

One of the primary benefits of private healthcare is shorter waiting times for consultations, tests and procedures compared to the NHS. This can be particularly advantageous for individuals seeking non-

Private services in the UK often collaborate with the NHS through partnership agreements, sharing resources, facilities and expertise. This integration helps alleviate the strain on the NHS and can provide additional options for patients requiring specialised care.

The private sector in the UK is evolving, driven by advancements in medical technology, changing patient preferences and regulatory developments. Digital health solutions and personalised medicine are likely to shape the future landscape of private healthcare, offering new opportunities for patient care and service delivery.

In the UK private healthcare serves as a valuable complement to the NHS, providing individuals with choice, flexibility and expedited access to medical services. While it presents certain advantages and challenges, the private healthcare sector continues to play a vital role in meeting the diverse healthcare needs of the population. n

CLOSER TO NATURE

Biomimetic materials that literally mimic nature, are revolutionising dentistry and here in the Ribble Valley, one forward-thinking practice is one of the leading pioneers of this technique

Always keeping ahead of the industry, leading private dental practice Renovo is one of the first practices in the UK that has fully adopted the very latest techniques that can successfully restore teeth by using materials that mimic nature and the natural tooth. Biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising the way dentists can restore and repair teeth as

Dr Usman Riaz of Ribble Valley-based Renovo explains: “This is micro-invasive dentistry. We can preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible by using scientifically developed, bio-compatible metal-free materials that act, feel and look just like our natural teeth.”

AVOIDING ROOT CANALS

“Biomimetic dentistry can help reduce your need for root canal therapy by up to 90 per cent. With immediate dentin sealing and resin coating, biomimetic dentistry gives pulps a vital chance to heal, helping maintain their natural resilience and extend their life. This is at the forefront of our core values,” adds Dr Riaz.

These latest advances in dental technology are set to change the way we view restorative dentistry. For teeth that have been damaged, porcelain crowns and veneers have, in the past, been the solution. However, more recent developments in bonding technology and the bio-materials used, have given dentists a new alternative, usually with no tooth removal.

Biomimetic restorations treat the causes of symptoms (cracks or caries near the pulp) so they do not result in sensitivity or pain after restoration: “Biomimetic techniques also restore the tooth in a way that mimics a tooth’s natural structure, preventing cracks around the restoration. Finally, the advanced adhesive techniques used in a biomimetic restoration have been shown to keep a restoration bonded for over 20 years, and counting, so the days of crowns or fillings falling out can be a thing of the past!”

These restorative materials that mimic nature, are not only perfect for aesthetically restoring teeth but they also help preserve and strengthen the natural tooth structure.

SCIENCE-BACKED DENTAL TREATMENT

Biomimetic dentistry is more technique sensitive and requires more detailed steps than traditional restorative practices. With Renovo’s approach, the dentists and the whole clinical team understand the science, or what we call the ‘why’ behind each step in their biomimetic restoration. The systematic steps

take the guesswork out of treatment planning, leaving clinicians and patients feeling confident in every restoration.

IMPROVED AESTHETICS

“Biomimetic dentistry is general dentistry and can be applied to every case we see at Renovo. The concepts of conserving tooth structure, saving pulps and superior adhesion will serve as a more predictable foundation of our work,” explains Dr Riaz. “We can change, reshape and enhance teeth with these new materials. The biomimetic materials are also reinforcing teeth – it is a totally different concept to what we have seen previously.”

Adopting the latest biomimetic philosophies and having all the specialist techniques and materials available to them, the dentists at Renovo are pioneering in

their unique approach.

“Specialist techniques are used in biomimetic dentistry and the whole team have had advanced training,” says Dr Riaz. “For us, using non-invasive techniques and preserving teeth has always been something

WE GET OPTIMAL RESULTS WITH ZERO TOOTH REMOVAL AND THAT’S WHY THE BIOMIMETIC APPROACH IS SO POPULAR

we routinely believe in and practice, so biomimetic dentistry sits really well with that belief.

“It’s the way dentistry should be done –to save and conserve teeth has always been our gold standard.”

ZERO TOOTH LOSS MAXIMUM AESTHETICS

For nervous patients the biomimetic approach revolutionises the way they view a dental appointment: “For those people, this is an amazing development as the approach is to conserve tooth tissue using minimally invasive techniques. No anaesthetic is needed as there is zero tooth removal.”

While biomimetic dentistry can help to naturally strengthen and restore damaged teeth, it is also perfect for cosmetic procedures: “From a cosmetic point of view we can improve without having to compromise, which is a very powerful concept.

“With the latest biomimetic materials, we get incredible results and in many cases, it is much quicker too, as it often involves just one visit to the dentist.

“These treatment concepts and philosophy are popular in the US and Europe, but it has taken time to develop in the UK. We have had to understand the materials and perfect new techniques so we can carry out dentistry at a different level.”

HEALTHIER TEETH HEALTHIER YOU

By removing all toxicity and inflammation from the mouth, biological dentistry helps restore vitality, balance and systemic health.

“What we put in our mouth and more importantly, the teeth themselves, has a crucial role to play in our overall health. Gut health begins in the mouth. It’s more than just a gateway – it’s a mirror reflecting our overall health.” n

ONLY THE BEST OF HEALTH

Fylde Private GP, now known as Fylde Private Medical, situated on St Annes Square, has recently extended its practice and services across a further two floors. Now there is even more reason to choose its wide range of treatments

Awarm welcome awaits in the sleek and calming entrance of Fylde Private Medical housed within the beautiful period building, once home to the Royal Bank of Scotland, having recently celebrated its second anniversary in the heart of St Annes.

This local private medical service puts the patient first. The aim is to deliver outstanding GP-led care to patients and to build a lasting relationship with them to understand all their healthcare and well-being needs.

Complementing the existing services, the centre is about to offer a host of extended treatments. These include:

• dermatology

• physiotherapy

• performance psychiatry

• ultrasound

• counselling

• aesthetics

• in-house pathology lab with the ability to conduct 324 different tests

• weight control treatments –including Alevere medical weight loss

Also joining the team is a consultant neurologist, cardiologist and ENT specialist. Operations Director, Noel Tracey, is proud to extend the range of services, particularly within the tastefully renovated upper floors: “Our patients suggested we need to extend our range of treatments and services and so we analysed our referral data and

identified what we could bring in-house,” Noel explained. “We can now offer a one stop shop for our patients with both primary and some secondary care.”

Fylde Private Medical aims to provide everything that traditional care can sometimes lose: the same GP, a team that knows and welcomes the patients and enough time to be listened to and feel valued. And it is better value for money than people think. Noel continued: “We recently treated a self-employed patient who had been signed off for six weeks as he needed a steroid injection. Unfortunately, he was looking at an eight week wait in which time he was unable to work and therefore had little income. Within 24 hours, we were able to treat him and get him back to work.

WE CAN NOW OFFER A ONE STOP SHOP FOR OUR PATIENTS WITH BOTH PRIMARY AND SOME SECONDARY CARE

The centre is bringing back the concept of the traditional family GP to offer compassionate, flexible and caring services for patients and their families with access to modern, convenient, safe, comfortable, clean within the state-of-the-art facility.

It is the speed and ease of which health issue can be dealt with that is impressive. At an initial appointment, bloods can be taken and analysed and scans taken in-house, the results of which are available quickly, ensuring and concerns have been investigated

all conveniently within one day and in one building. Noel continued: “We can provide the services our patients want without lengthy waiting lists and with the peace of mind that any health worries are dealt with quickly – it’s not just what we do, it’s the whole experience.”

Here, patients can also benefit from minor surgery procedures onsite that often are not a priority on the NHS. Noel described the relief a particular patient experienced following a removal of a facial growth: “This person had been very conscious for many years living with this particular problem. Using a plasma pen – a safe and non-evasive treatment – to remove the growth quickly and easily allowing the patient to enjoy the freedom from self-consciousness and allowing a new lease of life.”

WE CAN PROVIDE THE SERVICES OUR PATIENTS WANT WITHOUT LENGTHY WAITING LISTS AND WITH THE PEACE OF MIND THAT ANY HEALTH WORRIES ARE DEALT WITH QUICKLY

Reflecting modern lifestyles, Fylde Private Medical offers flexibility in choice of how and when patients can be seen. These can be face to face (in-clinic), or by phone or video consultations. They also offer home visits (depending on catchment area) to patients who are unable to attend the surgery.

With great online reviews and a Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating of ‘good’, why not invest in your health and contact the friendly team? Noel added: “It is an exciting time for the practice with so much more to offer and a growing team of highly qualified professionals. We all deserve good health and you will find all the support you need right here, six days a week. Please visit our website to discover the right treatment for you –we look forward to welcoming you.” n

FIRST CLASS CARE AS STANDARD

Ramsay Health Care is a prominent health provider with three well established hospitals in Lancashire, committed to delivering high-quality medical services and patient-centred care

Ramsay Health Care Ltd. operates hospitals and healthcare services across eight countries and is celebrating its 60th anniversary in global expertise this year.

Closer to home, there are three hospitals each with their own area of expertise, offering a wide range of surgical and medical treatments. The hospitals boast modern facilities, highly experienced and dedicated consultants with a skilled clinical team focused on delivering exceptional patient outcomes.

Buckshaw Hospital is a new purpose-built diagnostic centre, based in Chorley with a dedicated radiology department including onsite MRI, CT and mammography facilities. There is a focus on treatments such as urology, ENT and endoscopic procedures.

The long-established Fulwood Hall Hospital in Preston, specialises in a number of surgical procedures, including orthopaedics (hip,

knee, shoulder, hand and wrist, foot and ankle), general surgery, spinal, ophthalmology and urology.

Independent patient satisfaction surveys show that 99 per cent of patients would recommend the hospital to family and friends.

THERE ARE PLANS UNDERWAY TO INVEST FURTHER ACROSS THE THREE HOSPITALS IN THE COMING MONTHS

The Grade I listed Euxton Hall Hospital in Chorley offers 32 en-suite rooms and delivers treatments for orthopaedics, general surgery and plastics in a beautiful setting.

Hospital Director, Fiona Thornhill, said: “We have had a very exciting year with significant investment at Fulwood Hall Hospital with more than £1m spent on improving the environment for patients,

staff and our consultants. This has meant funding new theatre kit, upgraded patient bedrooms, staff facilities and creating additional space to support our continued growth. There are plans underway to invest further across the three hospitals in the coming months.

“We are also excited to announce a new ground-breaking treatment, Aquablation Therapy, which be available at Fulwood Hall Hospital from June 2024. This is an advanced robotic treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, for men suffering from a benign enlarged prostate.

It is estimated that one in two men aged between 51 and 60 have lower urinary tract symptoms associated with enlarged prostate and 99 per cent of men say it impacts their quality of life. Having access to this treatment in Preston will benefit many.

Ramsay Health is built on a principle of ‘People Caring for People’ and that is evident in staff satisfaction and positive reviews from patients. Fiona added: “Our people are amazing. They are here because they want to deliver a high-level of care to our patients. We are passionate about our fantastic team. If our people are happy, our patients are happy.”

As Ramsay Health Care continues to enhance its services across the North West, patients can expect to receive personalised care and access to new and innovative treatments, delivered with compassion and integrity. n

PRESTON’S CHARMING SUBURB

Just north of the bustling city of Preston, lies the serene suburb of Fulwood. This quaint and picturesque area boasts a unique blend of history, green spaces and community charm that makes it a hidden gem worth exploring

Fulwood is steeped in history, with roots tracing back to medieval times. The name ‘Fulwood’ is believed to derive from the Old English words ‘fugel’ (bird) and ‘wudu’ (wood), suggesting a historical landscape teeming with wildlife and dense forests. Over the centuries, Fulwood has evolved from a rural settlement to a vibrant suburban enclave, yet it retains echoes of its storied past in its architecture and landmarks.

One such landmark is the impressive Grade II listed Fulwood Barracks, which dates back to 1848. It stands as a testament to Fulwood’s military heritage and adds a distinctive character to the area. Watling Street Road, with its roots in Roman history, is also home to the stunning former Sharoe Green Hospital, originally Preston Union Workhouse, built from 1865 and also a listed building.

The area boasts an abundance of green spaces, offering residents and visitors alike

the opportunity to reconnect with nature. At the heart of the community lies the beautiful and expansive Preston Golf Club, providing not only a challenging course for golf enthusiasts but also stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

ONE OF FULWOOD’S GREATEST ASSETS IS ITS STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY

For those seeking a leisurely stroll or a family picnic, the nearby woods and parks, such as the picturesque Sherwood Woodlands or the sprawling Moor Park, offer peaceful retreats from the urban hustle. Moor Park, on the outskirts of Fulwood, is a local favourite, with its historic features, ornamental gardens and diverse recreational facilities.

One of Fulwood’s greatest assets is its strong sense of community. The suburb is home to a diverse population, from young

families to retirees, all of whom contribute to its welcoming atmosphere.

The Fulwood Library serves as a hub for learning and cultural activities, hosting book clubs, workshops, and exhibitions that enrich the lives of residents. Additionally, the thriving local businesses, often family-owned, add to Fulwood’s unique identity and provide a charming backdrop for exploring the area. There are a number of bars, pubs, cafes, restaurants and international take-aways to choose from along with shopping parks featuring big name retailers.

Despite its historical roots, Fulwood is well-connected and offers modern amenities. The area benefits from excellent transport links, making it convenient to access Preston city centre and beyond. Shopping centres, schools and healthcare facilities, including Royal Preston Hospital, are within easy reach, ensuring that Fulwood residents enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without sacrificing its tranquil ambiance.

Whether you are drawn to its historical landmarks, verdant landscapes, or vibrant community spirit, Fulwood offers a captivating blend of old-world charm and contemporary convenience. It invites you to explore its treasures and discover why it’s a cherished part of Preston’s landscape. n

CHARITY FOCUS

Live Preston & Fylde takes a look at ongoing fundraising projects that see thousands of pounds donated to good causes around the region If you want to highlight a charity, please email: alma.stewart@live-magazines.co.uk

HIGH BREAK FOR MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY

Preston-based holiday business Harrison Holidays has donated £2,500 to Lancashire Mind. Though based in Chorley, the charity works across the county to make a difference to people’s mental health. The fundraising high break was achieved thanks to the talents of professional snooker player Ian Burns and the hard work of the Harrison team.

Central to the fundraising was a snooker event hosted by the holiday firm at their Southport holiday park, Riverside. Contenders had fun taking on Ian’s skills and seeing him showcase his mastery. The money made throughout the night was generously added to with a donation made by William Harrison of Harrison Holidays.

Ian Burns is a professional snooker player from Croston in Leyland. He has played against some of the top players in the world including Judd Trump, John Higgins and Ronnie O’Sullivan, so the evening was a change of pace, but just as thrilling. Following the Southport event, Ian will be playing overseas in tournaments this year, with his career having already taken him to China, Australia, India and across Europe.

Ian said: “The night was a great success – it was fantastic to see so many people support a brilliant charity in Mind Lancashire. I hope we can do something again in the near future and raise more funds for such an important charity.”

William Harrison, owner of Harrison Holidays, said: “Thank you to everyone that came along and made our charity fundraiser a night to remember!

The Coast and Country bar and restaurant at Riverside has never seen anything like it, but what a thrill it was to host Ian, showcase his skills, entertain our guests and raise money for a wonderful local charity. Lancashire Mind do magnificent work offering training, support and education in schools, the community and workplaces and we are proud to be able to add our help to this.”

LANCASHIRE MIND DO MAGNIFICENT WORK OFFERING TRAINING, SUPPORT AND EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS, THE COMMUNITY AND WORKPLACES AND WE ARE PROUD TO BE ABLE TO ADD OUR HELP TO THIS

David Dunwell, CEO of Lancashire Mind, said: “Thank you to Ian and Harrison Holidays for choosing to support Lancashire Mind through their snooker showcase. Thank you to Harrison Holidays for hosting, the sponsors of the frames and to all those who donated towards the raffle and auction prizes. We had a wonderful evening and the impact of the funds raised will go such a long way to supporting the people of Lancashire.”

A FUN SUMMER OF EVENTS

There is so much going on this summer at Northcote Stud with the main event, the Young Horse Show, at the end of May. Gail Bailey caught up with Millie Coultherd to find out more

The Ribble Valley is incredibly lucky to have the North of England’s premier equestrian venue right here on our doorstep, and for anyone who hasn’t experienced the thrill of this top-level sport it’s the perfect place for a fun afternoon: “We have three incredible events this year, with the next one being our prestigious Young Horse Show, from 29th May to 2nd June,” says Millie Coultherd, Northcote Stud’s Events Co-ordinator.

The Young Horse Show at Northcote Stud is one of the biggest in the UK with 200 horses stabled on-site, with another 100 travelling in daily.

“The event is for up-and-coming young horses and is fantastic experience for them and their riders. The focus is on courses that are built purposely for the age of the horse, so it’s the ideal opportunity to develop a young horse’s skills,” Millie explains.

It is also available to hire for both corporate and family events,” explains Millie.

TRULY MAGICAL

In the heart of the beautiful Ribble Valley is a luxurious hideaway that has won a host of awards and attracted nationwide recognition for its idyllic location and innovative concept

Probably one of the most apt awards to have been bestowed on Everything Retreat in Mellor, is LUXlife’s Most Idyllic Accommodation 2023 Award.

In their award criteria, LUXlife says: “We are proud to highlight our winners’ efforts, innovation and creativity when it comes to delivering the best of the best for their myriad of customers. Stretching across the globe, the luxury resorts and retreats industry has been a prevalent force for exquisite self-care, sophistication and exclusive experiences.”

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Mellor in the Ribble Valley, Everything Retreat launched just over 12 months ago and from

the outset it was destined to become a winner.

Alongside the LUXlife award, closer to home the retreat won a Stars in Tourism Award for Innovation at the 2023 Ribble Valley Tourism

Awards, which described Everything Retreat, saying: “They don’t come more innovative than this! Here you are invited to disconnect from the stresses and strains of everyday life with an experience of pure quality and wellness in the heart of the Ribble Valley.”

Hot on the heels of this award came the Ribble Valley Business Awards, which named Everything Retreat as Best New Business winner and Social Media Champion.

Everything Retreat owner Louise Monk and her team also took Best Idyllic Retreat (North West England) at the CEO Awards and the retreat was also named a finalist in the Lancashire Tourism Awards for Best New Tourism Business and Best Self Catering Accommodation.

It’s been a busy time for Louise who has welcomed more than 1500 UK-wide and international visitors to the retreat –testament to their success as a totally exclusive hideaway that has pure luxury and enjoyment at its heart.

With 12 beautifully furnished lodges

all with outdoor hot tubs, the retreat has become renowned for providing guests with a first-class concierge service that deals with everything from restaurant bookings to local chauffeur services that will transport guests to their chosen destination.

Everything Retreat has also forged collaborations with some of the region’s best restaurants including Michelin-starred Northcote.

As a champion of local businesses, Louise explains: “We enjoy many successful collaborations with local restaurants and with local businesses through our unique concierge service.”

As the name suggests Everything Retreat delivers just about everything a guest could wish for – a delicious continental breakfast hamper in one of the luxury lodges, a quintessentially English afternoon tea or why not enjoy tapas in the lovely on-site Balance Bar after a day of discovery in the Ribble Valley? Louise has local team of artisan suppliers – from butchers, bakers and suppliers of exclusive wines, everything has been considered to ensure a first-class experience.

With the arrival of warmer weather, on the last Saturday of the month, guests staying at Everything Retreat can experience chilled

Balearic vibes at the Sunset Sessions with a DJ and music on the terrace, drinks and wood-fired pizza or barbecued burgers.

A luxurious haven, the grounds of Everything Retreat are a joy at this time of year with the views across the valley, nothing short of spectacular!

WE ARE PROUD TO HIGHLIGHT OUR WINNERS’ EFFORTS, INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY WHEN IT COMES TO DELIVERING THE BEST OF THE BEST

LUXlife Most Idyllic Accommodation 2023 Awards

The retreat is also surrounded by wildlife and there are plenty of interesting and scenic walks: “We are thrilled to attract visitors to the area – it shows them just how vibrant and beautiful the Ribble Valley is.”

Also passionate about health and wellbeing, Louise is hoping to expand the retreat’s wellness and spa credentials and is planning a number of events where guests can revitalise and re-connect in a quiet place. The retreat can also organise guest-led themed events whether that’s a yoga break, a workplace

team-builder or a private dining experience, this is a place where the magic happens! n

A GUIDE TO PROTECTING YOUR MONEY THE BANK OF MUM & DAD:

Now more than ever family and friends are lending a helping hand, and their cash, to get others on the property ladder, but what happens when the couple who buy the property together divorces? Angharad Bentley, family solicitor at Farleys gives her advice

Recent research suggests that the median parental contribution to help children get on the property ladder is £30,000 and the research also tells us that family and friends are failing to make it clear that this money is a loan rather than a gift. Furthermore, only 14 per cent of friends and family are taking legal advice to protect their money before handing it over.

This kind of financial support can be invaluable and often, the only way to get on the property ladder for some. However, when relationships break down, litigation often

follows when no proper consideration is given to how that money should be protected.

A prime example of this is when a parent makes a loan to a child so that they can afford to buy a property to live in. When the child divorces, and their spouse disputes that the money was a loan to be repaid from the financial settlement, litigation happens. The litigation results in legal costs on top of the loan and can increase the costs of the divorcing parties as well.

A PRIME EXAMPLE OF THIS IS WHEN A PARENT MAKES A LOAN TO A CHILD SO THAT THEY CAN AFFORD TO BUY A PROPERTY TO LIVE IN

A loan or a gift?

When parties divorce, the legal presumption, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, is that money received from friends and family is a gift.

If the money really is intended as a gift, meaning that you do not expect them to pay it back, the recipient may wish to put together a Living Together Agreement, often referred to as a Cohabitation Agreement. This would set out who put what in. If a

recipient is to be married, or is already married, consideration should be given to drafting a Pre or Post Nuptial Agreement. This sets out what should happen to the money provided by family or friends in the event the marriage breaks down.

If the money is a loan that you require to be repaid, it is often best protected by drawing up a Declaration of Trust. This document can set out the details of how a property is owned and in what shares. It can also name the family members or friends together with details of the loan. In financial remedy proceedings, it is difficult to challenge a properly drawn up Declaration of Trust.

To further protect the money loaned, the friend or family member may wish to have a Legal Charge drawn up and lodged against the title of the property with the Land Registry. Additionally, a Loan Agreement may be appropriate.

Behaviour, such as the recipient making regular repayments, would assist in determining the nature of the contribution if ever it came into dispute on divorce. n

DISCOVERING DESTINATION DUPES

Preston-based

travel expert, Joanne Wilson, looks at quieter alternatives to top locations around the world

Many travellers have a desire to uncover hidden gems free from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism – I like to call these ‘destination dupes’— my favourite spots for those seeking the essence of popular locations without the crowds. These picks promise the same joy and beauty as mainstream places, but allow you to experience them in a quieter, more personal setting.

Paros instead of Santorini

While the sunset views from the volcanic caldera of Santorini draw the crowds and the Instagrammers, many from cruise ships. Its fellow Cycladic Island of Paros is much more low-key, with gorgeous golden sand beaches, crystalline waters and lovely walks along Byzantine footpaths linking traditional villages lost in time.

THE SAME JOY AND BEAUTY AS MAINSTREAM PLACES, BUT ALLOWS YOU TO EXPERIENCE THEM IN A QUIETER, MORE PERSONAL SETTING

Perth instead of Sydney

The west coast city has the benefit of being accessible by direct flights from London, but that’s not the only thing it has going for it: the capital of Western Australia also offers sandy beaches, riverside parks and gardens and fantastic cultural venues, as well as being the gateway to natural wonders, including the Pinnacles Desert. It’s also great for foodies thanks to its fresh seafood and wideranging cuisine.

Like the Portuguese capital, Sicily’s main city oozes charm, impressive architecture, and

great food. Must-sees are the 12th-century cathedral with its royal tombs and Cappella Palatina with its Byzantine mosaics, but you’ll want to spend just as much time browsing the stalls in locations such as the Ballarò street market and trying fantastic local dishes.

Memphis instead of Nashville

The big-hitting home of country music is Nashville, but its Tennessee neighbour, Elvis’ hometown of Memphis, is just as compelling.

A visit to Graceland is a must, of course, but so is a trip to Sun Studio, where The King changed music history with his live recording of ‘That’s Alright, Mama’. The city is also known as the Barbecue Capital of America –don’t leave without sampling some of its legendary ribs.

Pattaya instead of Bangkok

For those who like things lively, this eastern Gulf Coast city blends cabaret bars, night markets, amusement parks, great shopping, golf courses and beaches with fascinating culture to rival that of the Thai capital, including several sacred places and temples –the most prominent being the hillside Wat Phra Yai Temple with its gleaming 12-metretall golden Buddha.

So, if any of these ‘dupes’ sound perfect for you, as your personal Travel Counsellor, I can provide more details and further destination options too.

In the meantime, happy dreaming of distant shores in the sunshine and please don’t hesitate to contact me for all your travel enquiries. n

When medical care falls below standard and causes the patient additional harm, it is medical negligence, commonly referred to as clinical negligence.

MAKING A CLAIM

There are two main elements to a claim:

1 The standard of treatment needs to have fallen below the standard expected of a reasonably competent clinician dealing with the condition, at the relevant time.

2 If the treatment was below standard, it needs to have caused additional pain, suffering, loss and damage over and above that which a patient may have experienced had the treatment been appropriate.

A medical expert would need to review the medical records and provide their opinion on both elements to establish a claim. It is essentially a peer review.

INVESTIGATING A CLAIM

Making a formal written complaint to the treating hospital or clinic is often helpful. The complaint should be acknowledged within a few weeks, followed by a formal written response within a couple of months.

MEDICAL TREATMENT GONE WRONG?

The clinical negligence team at Forbes Solicitors explain what can be done when medical treatment goes wrong causing additional harm

If there has been a ‘never event’ or significant harm been identified, there ought to be a ‘duty of candour notification’ or ‘serious incident’ report. The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) undertake maternity investigations in eligible circumstances particularly in stillbirth, neonatal death, severe brain injury and maternal death cases.

We can investigate a potential claim, obtain the medical records and consider the merits of a case. If there is a case, a written opinion from a medical expert, away from the local area, would be required. They will review the medical records and provide their opinion.

A MEDICAL EXPERT WOULD NEED TO REVIEW THE MEDICAL RECORDS

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

Legal aid is only available in serious birth brain injury cases. We accept cases on a no win no fee basis. We usually charge a 25 per cent success fee. If the claim is for an injured child, we do not charge a success fee. We may be able to obtain insurance to fund the expert’s fees involved in investigating case.

WHAT TYPE OF THINGS CAN YOU CLAIM

FOR?

The injury and any losses arising from it. Loss of earnings, accommodation, transport, equipment, mobility, therapies, education and care and assistance with independent living. In a death case, loss of dependency on earnings, pension or the services the deceased provided.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO MAKE A CLAIM?

Much depends on whether the case is defended. If negligence and some harm is accepted, it may be possible to obtain an interim payment. A contested case can take a number of years. Most cases settle before a trial and mediation is encouraged.

HOW WILL THE MONEY BE PAID?

Usually as a lump sum at the end of the case. In very serious, catastrophic injury cases, the settlement may include a lump sum and index linked periodical payments for the rest of the claimant’s life. n

Forbes Solicitors have an experienced Clinical Negligence Team dealing with all aspects of clinical negligence claims. For further information relating to any of the issues raised in this article, please contact one of the team on 01254 872 111.

Life has its moments. Some happy, some heartbreaking, and some where you’re going to need legal advice. With Forbes, you can embrace life with confidence, safe in the knowledge that whatever happens, we’ll be here for you.

When it comes to buildings, there aren’t many people as passionate as Joel Firth. Since helping his dad on property development projects in the school holidays as a youngster, Joel has a neverending passion creating and transforming both residential and commercial property: “I love finding derelict and disused land and buildings and helping to repurpose them, especially for community use and benefit,” he said.

Firth Associates, based on Woodlands Road, is an award-winning, innovative, design, development and community consultancy. Their current projects include the redevelopment of Windy Harbour into a destination leisure resort and the design of a new church next to AFC Fylde. Both follow Joel’s commitment to sustainability and regeneration.

I LOVE FINDING DERELICT AND DISUSED LAND AND BUILDINGS AND HELPING TO REPURPOSE THEM, ESPECIALLY FOR COMMUNITY USE AND BENEFIT

Joel takes his architectural role further by being an important part of the local community. As the previous chair of the Lytham St Annes Civic Society, Joel has supported a number of projects, bringing community groups together in regular meetings at his former bank building, aiming to enhance the area and make it somewhere to be proud of: “We have some

beautiful areas in Lytham, Ansdell and St Annes and some very passionate volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the areas tidy and attractive. There is no greater motivation than trying to make a place better and work with the various community groups to help them with their projects,” he added.

Passionate about the environment and sustainability, Joel has some exciting new projects including the introduction of the new Melton Grove eco-home.

“Having worked for 20 years designing houses I am always looking for ways to improve how we can service our clients better,” continued Joel. “I have now created a product where British design meets German engineering. Melton Grove is our new housing development company and we have teamed up with a leading European modular house building team so that I can design houses to the highest environmental standards using the latest construction techniques. The process is superb and in three days the houses can be watertight which in our climate is perfect. We also get a fixed price for the construction which again clients find attractive.”

The architectural design for some of the latest homes to be built in Lytham combine look of the original fisherman’s cottages with the Victorian townhouses in the area, creating homes that fit in well and give the right amount of space for modern living standards. Joel said: “We have a responsibility to build better, the use low carbon materials and use less energy. This is why using this new system, integrating a super insulated structure with the latest technology is the way forward, this is the way to build houses.”

And as if that wasn’t enough, Joel has also just embarked on creating a new community interest not for profit company.

The Civic Innovation Community Interest Company (CIC), is a visionary initiative committed to revitalising disused land and buildings in the borough of Fylde for the collective benefit of its residents.

Joel explained: “At Civic Innovation, we believe in the power of creativity, collaboration, and community-driven

AT CIVIC INNOVATION, WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION, AND COMMUNITY-DRIVEN SOLUTIONS TO TRANSFORM NEGLECTED SPACES INTO VIBRANT CENTRES OF OPPORTUNITY, INNOVATION, AND CIVIC PRIDE

solutions to transform neglected spaces into vibrant centres of opportunity, innovation, and civic pride. We will harness the potential of underutilised land and buildings to create sustainable, inclusive and thriving communities that enhance the quality of life for all residents of Fylde.”

At the heart of this work is a deep-rooted commitment to community empowerment and engagement. Through meaningful collaboration and co-design processes, it seeks to involve local residents, businesses, and organisations in shaping the future of their built environment and green spaces. Among its ambitions, Civic Innovation plans include:

• Transforming vacant and derelict land into community gardens and urban farming initiatives.

• Repurposing vacant or underutilised

building into vibrant community spaces. These spaces may include affordable housing units, co-working spaces for local entrepreneurs and small businesses, art galleries, performance venues, or educational facilities.

• Organising community events and markets that celebrate Fylde’s cultural heritage and creativity and

• Collaborating with local artists and community groups to create public art installations that beautify public spaces and inspire civic pride.

Joel concluded: “It’s an exciting time for me and my family, the company and the local community. I am delighted to be able to give something back to this wonderful area of ours.” n

I’M LUCKY TO HAVE A-LIST CLIENTS WHO BRING FABULOUS LABELS. IT SIMPLY HAS TO BE PERFECT

revente

Pat Haslam has forged an enviable reputation. Her meticulous attention to detail is legendary and the service she supplies is simply outstanding – that’s why clients have returned again and again.

It’s an age-old problem: looking for something unique, different and very special to wear for anything from a wedding to a day at the races. Revente specialises in top class re-sale, with outfits from global design icons such as Chanel, Hermes, Marc Cain, Zac Posen, Armani, Zimmermann and Rixo as well as special occasion wedding wear from renowned names like Veni Infantino, Magda Butrym and Gambaletta to name a few. These are complemented by Revente’s beautiful collection of hats, fascinators, bags and shoes to complement any outfit.

Owner Pat Haslam revealed the secrets of her success: “I’m extremely particular about what comes into the shop,” she said. “I’m lucky to have A-list clients who bring fabulous labels. It simply has to be perfect. The idea is that when you walk through the door, you’d never realise this is re-sale, take a closer look at the price tags and you’ll be taken by surprise.

“For a big occasion you have to get it right. Whatever her age, a lady wants to feel and look beautiful it’s simply about giving her confidence. So it’s my job to be honest and tell someone when an outfit looks great or perhaps when it could be better, it’s a very personal service.

“There are lots of ladies who will have invested in a first-class designer outfit for a special occasion that now resides at the back of their wardrobe. So, I’d invite them to bring it to us for re-sale. It means they’ll get a return on their investment, while someone else has the joy of wearing it again!” n

LIFE’S A BEACH

Whalley based footwear retailer LANX used iconic locations along Lancashire’s Fylde Coast as the backdrop for their latest campaign photoshoot. Partnerships’ Manager Evan Soule explains why. Photography: Michael Hearn

You won’t find prouder Lanacastrians than the team here at LANX. We’re based in the Ribble Valley, and each shoe style is named after a local town, village, or well- known character. A coastal name seemed fitting for our new women’s boat shoe, so of course we had to shoot the Lytham style in its namesake location.

We knew better than to hope for blue skies and a warm breeze so planned to roll with the punches and work with whatever conditions we were presented with. Unsurprisingly, the shores of Lytham, St. Annes and Blackpool offered all four seasons in two days – exactly what we were hoping for as a brand who advocates getting ‘em worn whatever the weather. No fairweather people here.

Between us, the LANX team have probably visited every chippy and ice-cream van in the area so naturally a ‘99, chippy lunch and seagulls stealing said chippy lunch featured in our campaign. Keeping it real, after all.

Talented photographer Rosie Woods and videographer Patrick Tillard captured candids against iconic landmarks such as Lytham windmill, St Anne’s Pier and arcade and of course Blackpool Tower and Comedy Carpet. Models Duncan and Sophie, a real-life couple, brought authenticity and a genuine sense of fun to the shoot which reflected a typical day out to the Lancashire seaside. We want people to watch the video and think ‘I recognise that place!’ and relate to exactly the kind of day we had. And hopefully want a pair of our shoes too, of course!

Evan added: “Watch our campaign video on our website including a behind the scenes film of the day. You’ll see all the antics, outtakes, and stunning Fylde scenery that make our photoshoots as fun as they are authentic.

“Our two-day adventure was as real as it gets with seaside escapades. This shoot embodies everything LANX stands for: authentic experiences, robust laughter and shoes that truly keep up with life including the Fylde Coast’s weather!” n

A STROLL AROUND LYTHAM

This issue, local writer and walking enthusiast Steve Garrill takes us for a long stroll around Lytham taking in some wonderful historical facts and features

Lytham Circular (3.3 miles)

Please note the rear entrance to Lytham Hall, which this walk utilises, is now open on Sunday, but when closed, after crossing the Church Drive railway bridge, turn right into Witch Wood, to the end and turn left.

1. From the station bear left through Sparrow Park and turn right onto Park Road. At the end cross over into Clifton Square. Turn right down Henry Street. The Taps on the left was once the coaching and stabling for the Clifton Arms. At the end of the street on the right was the site of a Drill Hall. On the 6th August 1914 the Lytham Territorials marched to Preston. Many never returned.

2. Turn right onto Queen Street and left onto Church Road.

Facing you at the end of Queen Street is Hastings Place. The large building on the left was the estate office for Lytham Hall. The Gatehouse for Lytham Hall was originally here before being moved brick by brick to its present location. You will see this later on the walk.

THE GATEHOUSE FOR LYTHAM HALL WAS ORIGINALLY HERE BEFORE BEING MOVED BRICK BY BRICK TO ITS PRESENT LOCATION

3. Continue along Church Road and at the third left, Lowther Terrace, enter into Lowther Gardens.

Lowther Gardens were provided by Squire J Talbot Clifton in 1872 in honour of his wife, Eleanor Cecily Clifton (of the Lowther family in Cumbria). They were designed and laid out for the benefit of the inhabitants and visitors to Lytham on what was previously poor grazing land known as Hungry Moor.

Lowther Pavilion has an extensive programme of entertainment and ambitious plans for future development.

www.lowtherpavilion.co.uk

4. Explore the grounds of Lowther Gardens before exiting at the next corner back onto Church Road. Cross the road and turn into St Cuthberts Church. Take a look inside this beautiful church and then walk around the graveyard. Look for the Lytham Lifeboat Memorial.

The current church of St Cuthberts is the third to be built on this site. A church was built in 1770, to replace an older structure of cobbles. This was replaced in 1834–1835. It was enlarged in 1872 and again in 1909. In its grounds you will find the Lytham Lifeboat Memorial commemorating the 27 lifeboatmen who lost their lives in the 1886 Mexico Disaster.

5. Return and continue to turn into Church Drive. Go over the railway bridge onto Ringwood Drive, over to Maplewood Close and straight on to cross Forest Drive into the rear entrance of Lytham Hall.

The estate once covered more than 80,000 acres and the Clifton family were one of the richest in the country. In Cuthbert Clifton’s time there were 16,000 acres. For more history see an article at www.lytham.online/hall by Peter Anthony.

Lytham Hall is run by Heritage Trust North West with the help of more than 300 volunteers. The hall is managed by Peter Anthony and Paul Lomax who have overseen a massive restoration of this Georgian House.

There is an extensive range of events – see www.lythamhall.co.uk

6. Follow the track. Take the first path on the right, then the second on your left into South Prospect garden. Turn left past The Mount.

The Mount, constructed from the soil excavated from Curtains Pond in the 17th Century, contained an ice house for imported ice.

7. Pass to the left of a large brick wall and then right through the vegetable gardens. Turn right to pass through the Garden Hub. The recently refurbished café on your right has an excellent menu and is highly recommended. There is also outdoor seating.

The Garden Hub always has a truly beautiful display of flower and plants for sale. It is run by the very affable Greg Anderton who is instrumental in many of the flower displays around Lytham. Visit www.lytham.online/ greg for the fascinating story of Greg’s life so far.

Lytham has won the Gold Award from North West in Bloom for nine consecutive years. Search for Lytham in Bloom on Facebook.

8. Turn left to pass the Antiques and Reclamation Centre. Turn left again to pass the gift shop. Continue on and the Animal Hub is on the left. Turn right towards the Dovecote.

The Dovecote, with 850 nesting boxes, would have been managed by the gamekeeper.

9. Turn right through the car park and right again. The stables would have been on the right.

The stables and the Dovecote date back to the 1790s. The Clifton family were active horse owners and several winners were trained and housed here. The stables will be restored in a future phrase of redevelopment.

10. Turn left and straight ahead. Turn left directly opposite the side entrance to Lytham Hall down a broad wooded walkway which leads you to the Lily Pond and the fountain.

The Lily Pond is a haven for wildlife. This

THE ESTATE ONCE COVERED MORE THAN 80,000 ACRES – THE CLIFTON FAMILY WERE ONE OF THE RICHEST IN THE COUNTRY

along with the boathouse, which is being restored, was used by the Clifton family for entertaining.

11. Pass the boathouse and follow the path around the edge of the Lily Pond until you reach a junction of paths. Turn left and then left onto a track. At a pile of logs turn right on to another path and follow this to reach the wrought iron gates. Turn left down the drive and eventually pass through the gatehouse. The main gatehouse and entrance were moved here from Hastings Place (near the start of today’s walk) in 1863 when the railway line to Blackpool was built. This is when Witch Wood was also created. Gatekeeeper accommodation was on both sides, with doorways onto the drive. It was inhabited up to the 1980s. The recently renovated gatehouses are available to rent for a couple as self-catering accommodation (Estate Office 01253 736652).

12. Cross the road and over the railway bridge back into Lytham. n

DERMOT O’LEARY VISIT

Westholme had the pleasure of welcoming Mr Dermot O’Leary to the Croston Theatre to talk to Prep pupils about his new children’s book, Wings of Glory. Organised through Book, Bean and Ice Cream in Kirkham, Dermot took to the stage to speak to pupils about the characters from his book and shared pictures from his own childhood to illustrate the important moments that shaped his love of reading and the inspirations behind his new novel. Dermot concluded his presentation with an excerpt from his book with the children then invited to partake in a draw-along activity.

SPORTSTURF GRADUATE CLINCHES TOP JOB

Tom Wells recently became Head Groundsman of Morecambe FC having previously completed a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sportsturf at Myerscough College, before securing positions at high profile employers, ahead of his move to the Mazuma Mobile Stadium. Tom is no stranger to Morecambe, having been part of the matchday grounds team for a couple of seasons, working under predecessor Rob Davidson. “It’s nice to be here as Head Groundsman, I’ve been helping Rob out for two-and-a-half to three years nearly on a matchday basis,” Tom told the club’s official website.

CRICKET CHAMPIONS

A series of outstanding, undefeated performances from the Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall girls’ cricket team saw them triumph at the Regional Indoor Competition at Bolton Arena to become North of England champions for the first time and secure a place at the Indoor National Final at Lords Cricket Ground in May. With the win, the girls are now among the top five teams in England, and even more extraordinary is that most of the team developed their cricket skills at Stonyhurst, with all the hard work now paying off having successfully compete against schools with county-level players.

UNIVERSITY SUPPORTS REBRAND

The University of Central Lancashire has helped a local business land a life-changing contract with major supermarket chain, Aldi. The institution’s Innovation Clinic supported Cluster Club, a Blackburn-based confectioners, with rebranding and new designs for the packaging of its three flavours of nut and chocolate snacks. Owner Yasir Patel pitched the walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts and chocolate cluster products to a panel on Channel 4’s ‘Aldi’s Next Big Thing’ and the start-up business entrepreneur was chosen as the winner in the confectionery category. The chocolate-flavoured products will now appear as a Specialbuy in more than 1,000 stores.

EVEREST EXHIBITION

A free exhibition co-designed by a University of Central Lancashire historian is taking place to mark the centenary of the first expedition to Mount Everest. Dr Jonathan Westaway has worked with National Trust heritage curator Harvey Wilkinson to create Other Everests: One Mountain, Many Worlds. Timed to coincide with the centenary of the 1924 Mount Everest Expedition, the display will open at the National Trust’s Wray Castle on the shores of Lake Windermere this June. The free exhibition uses stunning photographs from the Royal Geographical Society archives.

CELEBRATION EVENING

The Celebration Evening for Year 13 was held in early May – a fitting send-off to the students before their study leave commenced. Year 13 students were joined by their parents and academic staff to reflect on their time at AKS, interspersed with performances from the Chamber Choir, and piano solos by Maia C and Dev C. Headmaster, David Harrow’s welcome was followed by a poignant address from Jack Ranby (OAKS Alumni Class of 2014) who reflected on having sat in the OAKS Hall as Head Boy of the newly formed AKS Lytham ten years previously, after starting his school career at Arnold.

MEN & WOMEN FOR OTHERS

Stonyhurst is a school where pupils have a vast array of opportunities that are both educational and character forming, developing well-rounded individuals who make a positive impact on the world around them

Imagine an education unlike anywhere else, where the links to the past are as strong as they are in creating bright futures, by shaping young people as confident, caring, global citizens through a broad curriculum, vast co-curricular opportunities and teaching based on values. Stonyhurst is that place. The only school in the county to feature in the renowned Tatler Schools Guide, pupils aged three to 18 years from all over the world, experience all that the school has to offer in terms of academia, sports, performing arts and charitable endeavours, while developing crucial life skills and lifelong friendships. Boarders in particular thrive in a seven-day-a-week home-from-home, benefitting greatly from living with their peers and learning about cultures different to their own.

Parents and children alike value the strong family identity of Stonyhurst, from the PrePrep at Hodder House, which is celebrating 20 years in 2024, through to the Prep School at St Mary’s Hall, which prolongs childhood by providing a much cherished ‘middle school’ option by going up to Year 8, allowing children a more positive transition to more senior education.

At the College, a wide range of learning styles and interests continue to be catered for, with A levels, the International Baccalaureate

Diploma and the Cambridge Technical in Business and Sport. This is alongside a comprehensive co-curricular provision, with exceptional facilities such as the tennis dome, observatory, swimming pool and dance studio, allowing new passions to be discovered and existing ones to flourish.

PARENTS

AND CHILDREN ALIKE VALUE THE STRONG FAMILY IDENTITY OF STONYHURST

Many of these activities take place on the school’s beautiful, 1,000-acre campus in the Ribble Valley – a setting that has inspired many minds over the last two centuries, including novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. Parity is ensured across the board in terms of opportunities, with a real girls’ sporting culture continuing to go from strength to strength, with recent Sixth Form leavers

representing England at international tournaments in rugby and cricket. The school also sees regular annual success in a range of other sports, including hockey and tennis, which is led by former professional and previous LTA Performance Coach of the Year winner, David Shaw.

Stonyhurst College is also home to the oldest museum in the English-speaking world, housing a fascinating collection of over 100,000 historic books and artefacts, dating back to the school’s origins in St Omer, France, in 1593. The museum and historic libraries are used regularly by all year groups to bring the curriculum to life, with topical exhibitions also held each year for members of the public and visiting schools. This recently included celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s First Folio and in 2024 exploring issues surrounding the changing natural world, with pupil research and curation shaping this exhibition.

Indeed, it is just one of many opportunities for pupils to get involved in the working aspect of the school, which is encouraged through the traditions of being the oldest continually active Jesuit school in the world. The values of the Jesuit Pupil Profile are woven into all areas of school life, centred on formation of the whole person, and creating ‘men and women for others’ – knowledgeable, compassionate and well-rounded individuals who strive to make a positive impact on their communities throughout their time at Stonyhurst and beyond. n

STUDENTS INSPIRED

Top universities and leading businesses such as the BBC and KPMG attended an event designed to inspire Westholme students, planning the next stage of their educational journey

Westholme School recently opened its doors to students and their parents from across the region for a special University and Apprenticeship Fair, to inspire their next steps in education. Delegates from over 20 top higher education institutions travelled to the award-winning Pleasington school.

Representatives from universities including Leeds, Glasgow, Lancaster, Imperial College London together with businesses including the BBC, Warburtons, Booths, Panache Cruises and KPMG spoke to students on the night about the opportunities they could expect within their respective organisations. Head of Westholme’s INSPIRED Sixth Form, Jonathan Oracz, recounts the evening: “As Head of Sixth Form at Westholme School, I am passionate about providing students with every opportunity on the pathway to life beyond their A Levels. It was therefore a pleasure to put together our own recent University and Apprenticeship Fair, welcoming delegates into school for a special evening to inform, advise and enthuse students and families from across the region.

“I am very proud of our success as the 2023 Independent School of the Year for our Careers Programme. It is through the wider support and opportunities we provide for

our students, such as this event, that they have excelled in achieving highly coveted degree apprenticeships and university places.

“In addition to the numerous recruitment and outreach advisors from UK universities and leading companies, many recent Westholme graduates returned on the evening, representing the major companies

I AM VERY PROUD OF OUR SUCCESS AS THE 2023 INDEPENDENT SCHOOL OF THE YEAR FOR OUR CAREERS PROGRAMME

they are now privileged to be a part of. They hosted stalls to promote the Level 6 Degree Apprenticeships they were successful in achieving through the support given during their time at school. Seeing our alumni giving back to the school, grateful for what they were given and now wishing to give

other students the same opportunities they themselves were afforded, was truly a pleasure to behold. It’s a cycle of success that makes me incredibly proud.

“We welcomed students from Years 9 to 13 and I hope that all families who attended found it to be useful, no matter what year group they are in and that seeds of inspiration were planted, even for the younger year students. For Year 12 students, it was a fantastic opportunity to narrow down their options for that all-important next step in their education and potential career.

“At Westholme, we pride ourselves on providing our students with unrivalled holistic excellence and this recent University and Apprenticeship Fair is a great example of our team coming together to do the very best for our students, giving them the best possible opportunities in taking the next steps towards making their career aspirations a reality.” n

customer services and marketing to becoming Head of Marketing in 2008, working between sites based in Salford and Staines: “I was given the opportunity to transfer my skills from customer services to a newly established marketing department as a subject matter expert. I was new to marketing but knew and understood the expectations of our customers and Bupa supported me through marketing training which further enhanced my skills in this area,’’ she said.

Ramsay Health Care Hospital Director, Fiona Thornhill, started her healthcare career in 1989, and since then has worked in a variety of roles leading up to her current position. She shares her journey with Alma Stewart

This year Ramsay Health Care is celebrating its 60th anniversary having opened its first hospital in Australia in 1964. Today, Ramsay Health Care operates hospitals and healthcare services across eight countries. Here in the North West, Ramsay operates five hospitals including Renacres Hospital in

Southport and Oaklands Hospital in Salford. Fiona Thornhill, who has been part of the healthcare industry for more than 35 years, is at the helm of three hospitals: Fulwood Hall in Preston which opened in 1987, Euxton Hall which opened in 1983 and Buckshaw Hospital, the newest facility, opened in 2021.

From her home in rural West Yorkshire, Fiona has travelled all over the country working for the top operators in private healthcare. But it was as a customer services advisor where it all began: “When I left school, I was keen to join a blue-chip organisation to gain the experience across a range of areas in particular those relevant to customer services where I knew I could help people,” she said. “I started working for Bupa when I was 19 and have been fortunate to have worked for inspirational leaders who recognised my potential early on and supported my career development.”

Fiona worked for Bupa for 21 years, in

I WAS SO LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN MENTORED BY SOME OUTSTANDING PEOPLE

Deciding to spread her wings, Fiona crossed to BMI Healthcare as Head of Marketing, this time based in London where she then went on to fulfil roles at HCA Healthcare, Nuffield Health and Cromwell Hospital.

“I lived out of a suitcase for many years, working away from home during the week,” Fiona continued. “I had two children back home in Yorkshire but was supported by a wonderful husband who sacrificed his own career to raise our family in the early years. Whilst challenging, this was a particularly rewarding time in my career.”

Following extensive surgery after a knee injury, Fiona realised that such a long commute was not sustainable. She was keen to work closer to home and took on the role as Associate Hospital Director at Spire Healthcare Leeds, progressing to Hospital Director at Spire Cheshire. “I was so lucky to have been mentored by some outstanding people,” Fiona continued. “My mentor during my time at Bupa led a number of Bupa’s businesses. She was a consummate professional with a passion for customer service, who helped me to understand who I wanted to be as a leader and developing my approach and work ethic whilst maintaining an unwavering focus on ensuring the customer remains at the heart of all we do.”

IT’S A HUGE PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT TO BE ASKED TO MANAGE THREE HOSPITALS AND THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF OPPORTUNITY FOR FUTURE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT ACROSS EACH SITE

Ramsay Health Care is synonymous with the phrase ‘People Caring for People’ and that is no more evident than with Fiona’s approach and the reason she joined the company: “I have worked at Ramsay since January 2023 and the ethos here is fantastic. My direct line manager and our COO have been instrumental in my progression. They are supportive and give me the autonomy to deliver excellent, safe, care and outstanding customer focus to our patients across the North West. It is inspirational to know that my biggest influences have come from strong, independent women.”

Fiona makes sure the teams at each of her hospitals feel valued. She regularly goes ‘back to the floor’ to shadow in various departments to better understand the patient journey and as Registered Manager, takes her role extremely seriously: “In my time with Ramsay, I have made it my priority to get to know our staff, who each do an amazing job every day. As the Hospital Director, I am fortunate to be able to facilitate and support the team in consistently delivering the best service and care possible for our patients. This includes working closely with consultant colleagues to develop new services to meet the demands of the community,” she added.

Investment in the facilities at Fulwood Hall have been positive over the last 12 months

and Fiona is keen to extend investment to Euxton Hall to grow the consultant base and upgrade facilities. The plans for Buckshaw Hospital investment include a focus on diagnostic capabilities which will facilitate swift access to MRI, CT and endoscopy services.

“The Ramsay values permeate throughout the workforce,” she explained. “We all work towards the same goal – patient centric care, which drives a positive culture across each of our hospitals. We have some long serving staff who dedicated many years of care to an organisation which they are proud to say feels like a family.”

Fiona has some exciting plans in mind for the future of the Lancashire hospitals including reintroducing patient forums and supporting the wider communities. She

concludes: “It’s a huge personal achievement to be asked to manage three hospitals and there is a great deal of opportunity for future growth and development across each site. I am proud to be in a position to influence the future of these hospitals on their journey to become outstanding.” n

TOP SHOW

The Ineos Grenadier is a first-class vehicle that has super driveability and incredible performance, writes Paul Agnew.

Photography: Peter Austin

If you appreciate the finer things like designer clothes, smart watches or any items that exude excellence and are totally fit for purpose – if you are seeking a vehicle of status, one that combines sophistication, strength, simplicity and style – if you have got this far, then please, feel free to read on.

For INEOS has quite possibly, very probably, almost definitely produced something to tickle your good-taste buds.

The Grenadier is a car (loosely termed) for utilitarians, enthusiasts, urban explorers, weekenders and high achievers.

Essentially people like you – people who know the difference.

It’s a 4x4 that is practical day-to-day but more than capable of working outdoors. It’s a hobby horse for exploring, which values

high-quality and can provide perfect transport for the entire family during the week and a perfect companion for weekend adventures.

In a nutshell, it’s successful and driven. It’s not trying to be pristine, or fake or a poser, simply interested in top show.

The Grenadier is more a premier product, engineered to the highest specification, expert at working and doing, delivering experiences

and outcomes that will blow your mind.

It’s aimed at the professional consumer –now affectionately known known as the ‘prosumer’.

The Grenadier is available in Trailmaster or Fieldmaster editions, both of them workhorses producing optimum performance day-in-and-day-out, irrespective of weather or ground conditions.

And while offering off-road perfection and incredible performance over the toughest terrains, it also manages to be something of a funky machine with a lighter side.

YOU START UP THE ENGINE WITH A KEY, ONE OF SEVERAL THROWBACK FEATURES TO TIMES WHEN CARS WERE NOT OVER-COMPLEX

You certainly don’t have to be a landowner, builder, farmer or rural vet to appreciate its overall charm and appeal. The Grenadier is about super driveability on any road from town, to motorway to twisty mountain pass.

As great to drive on the road as it is off, this is a ready-for-anything, accept-any-challenge machine of incredible capability.

Under the supervision of super-rich chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe (motor enthusiast and experienced adventurer) INEOS has identified a gap in the market for a stripped back yet immensely attractive 4x4 – a head-turner, engineered for modern day compliance, reliability and fun.

At first glance it could appear to be something of a niche vehicle. It isn’t. Trust me, the buying market is much wider.

You start up the engine with a key, one of several throwback features to times when cars were not over-complex and unnecessarily crammed with zillions of might-use-mightnot-use gadgets.

THE GRENADIER IS ABOUT SUPER DRIVEABILITY ON ANY ROAD FROM TOWN, TO MOTORWAY TO TWISTY MOUNTAIN PASS

You actually press buttons and turn dials –there is even a manual handbrake – nothing is complicated, but that’s not to say this is old school, far from it.

All the necessary modernity is here with every detail to satisfy the demands of the urban sprawl – yes, don’t worry Apple CarPlay is right there – as is an automatic gearbox and a whole host of up-to-the-minute features.

You’ll find a refined interior with a spacious and light cabin and super supportive seats to ensure a smooth ride. It’s civilised on every journey with absolutely no need to trade onroad comfort for off-road capability.

Yes, it’s rugged and durable, and seriously capable, but there’s far more to it than meets the eye with a range of specifically-designed, warranty-backed and fully-tested accessories.

Take the rear 70/30 door, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, thanks to a foldable tailgate camp table specially designed to fit and taking up minimum space. No bouncing around off-road, just a handy food/drink preparation surface that’s rugged, rattle-free and ready-to-go.

There is a generous palette of traditional bodywork colours and interior styles to select from – even a high-vis wrap!

There’s plenty of choice and options – and when you need to make a move or move some stuff, then the willing Grenadier more than pulls its weight.

You can load it, tow it, drag it, recover it or strap it to the roof with a staggering 3.5 tonnes

The Grenadier is many things. Go along and experience it, for this, my ‘prosumer’ friends, is a genuine gear shift in modern motoring. n

of towing capacity and up to 2,000 litres of loadspace.

Drive the Grenadier and expect to find an admiring audience whenever you rock up –a country show, race track, school gate or shopping centre.

For me, it is more than a vehicle for one purpose, more a versatile vehicle for multipurpose, easily capable of fitting in and significantly enhancing most lifestyles.

A TOUCH OF CLASS

The Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo is a sophisticated, joyous, all-electric drive that is nigh on unbeatable, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin

What makes a great car manufacturer? Well, aside from the obvious, comes an overriding obsession to be stand-out. To never settle, to go in search of perfection.

Irrespective of the merits of their many creations over time – or the plaudits they receive along the way – the truly great manufacturers (and their design teams) never stop seeking something even better. Take Porsche, or to be more specific the impressive all-electric Taycan, a sports car par excellence which first appeared on our roads to universal acclaim five years ago.

At the launch, one reviewer termed it ‘unbeatable’, but the Porsche design team were having none of it.

Back to the studio of dreams, they set out to beat the unbeatable.

And guess what? They’ve only gone and done it!

For the new all-electric Taycan is a genuine head-turner of a sports car – premier in every aspect and an absolute joy to drive.

It would be misleading to say it has had a facelift – everything was already top drawer. Better to call it a re-fresh, made up of impressive tweaks to produce an even sleeker look, countless additional comforts

and some mind-boggling technology.

But maybe the most significant difference centres around efficiency and this is completely due to the introduction of a larger battery.

A much larger battery, which delivers a range increase of up to 35 per cent to a maximum of 421 miles/678 kilometres (WLTP) and all models can charge from a 10 per cent to 80 per cent state in just 18 minutes.

Impressive statistics indeed and a fond

farewell to so-called range anxiety.

And if that’s not enough, a sophisticated ‘route planner’ (optional) will not only identify when a top-up is required but take you straight to the nearest charging point while you just sit there, steer and marvel.

There are three Taycan models from which to make your choice – the Sport Saloon, the Sport Turismo and the Cross Turismo. I was handed the keys to the 4S Cross Turismo for what was to be a truly joyous test drive.

IT’S QUITE REMARKABLE TO BE TOLD THAT YOU CAN TAKE A CAR AS BEAUTIFUL AS THIS OFF ROAD, BUT YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT

All-wheel drive automatic in a stunning exterior colour ‘Crayon’ with a smooth finish black leather interior, the ride was fabulous thanks in no small part to the improved air suspension.

Such comfort, so quiet (although you can, if you wish, have ‘sport sound’ of course) and crammed with every gadget imaginable and a host of high-end features.

The detail, the touches that make Porsche what it is – a king amongst cars.

From the huge panoramic roof to the BOSE surround sound system, from the privacy glass to the adaptive front sports seats (18-way, electric with memory) from the 21-inch design wheels to the HD matrix LED headlights –everything comes with a touch of class.

Not forgetting all the individual manufacturer’s touches like the Porsche crests on headrests, light strip with illuminated Porsche logo and the iconic Porsche clock in pride of place on the dashboard.

And what a dashboard! Big and clear and easy to see and negotiate with information you may, could and probably will require at every point of the journey. You’re never out there alone in a Taycan – help is always a fingertip away.

It’s quite remarkable to be told that you can take a car as beautiful as this off road, but you better believe it (it even has concealed bicycle carriers).

So, if you are looking for the ultimate electric vehicle driving experience but have a

family to suit and crave extra practicality, the Taycan Cross Turismo is just about spot on.

With a larger boot, more space in the rear area and greater visibility, this car is also perfectly able to cope with road surfaces that have seen better days.

A

SOPHISTICATED, OPTIONAL ‘ROUTE PLANNER’ WILL NOT ONLY IDENTIFY WHEN A TOP-UP IS REQUIRED BUT TAKE YOU STRAIGHT TO THE NEAREST CHARGING POINT

This car is basically an alluring combination of style, interior well-being, luxury and technology with a hunger to eat up the road.

A car with a history that is all about tomorrow, but available today.

Talking of which, Porsche Centre Preston assure me that the Taycan is ready and waiting to be driven, enjoyed and ordered –and delivered in pretty swift time.

Ferdinand Porsche, the man behind the brand, once said: “I couldn’t find the sports car of my dreams, so I built it myself.”

Ferdinand wasn’t named car designer of the 20th century for nothing and fair to say that he would be immensely proud of the nigh-on unbeatable all-electric Taycan. n

PERFECT BALANCE

You’ll want for nothing with the new second-generation BMW X2, which is the perfect balance of luxury and performance, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin

Imagine a catwalk for cars. An auditorium, full of glitz and glamour, excitement and panache, where confident models strut their stuff, where stunning looks and good body styling are paramount –where global manufacturers compete to be different, innovative, to stand out from the crowd.

Well, here is a genuine contender for best in show 2024 – the new BMW X2.

A real eye-catcher, it’s sporty and distinctive with a sleek coupe-like roof, quirky front kidney grille and a host of striking features.

In 2018, the BMW X2 introduced the concept of an SAC (Sports Activity Coupe) for the premium compact segment.

This forward-looking second generation – available in both petrol and all-electric –is significantly larger with a pronounced coupe silhouette that represents something of a development leap for the manufacturer.

But you never ever need to worry about BMW getting anything wrong and the progressive character of the new X2 is not only evident in the fully-electric BMW iX2 variant, but also in the large spread of systems enabling automated driving and parking and the amazing digital services laid on by the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9.

The worldwide launch got underway in March with the all-electric BMW iX2 xDrive30

offering high-voltage batteries and impressive eco-friendly statistics, along with a top speed of 112mph and acceleration of 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds.

Oh, and ‘up to 279 miles’ is the answer to the all-important ‘electric range’ question.

The dynamic BMW X2 M35i, with its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, comfortably provides 36mpg and happily sprints to 62mph in 5.4 seconds.

Visually, the new BMW X2 shows clear differentiation from the brand’s compact

the BMW X1. As such, it is instantly identifiable as a pure-bred Sports Activity Coupé some 194 millimetres longer, 21 millimetres wider and 64 millimetres higher than its predecessor.

Defining elements of the upright front end are striking LED headlights and an almost hexagonal kidney grille, which can be specified as an option with BMW iconic glow contour lighting. You can also opt for adaptive LED headlights with non-dazzling matrix high beam.

M-specific design features such as the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes integrated into the rear apron, give the BMW X2 M35i xDrive a particularly dynamic aura. An M Sport package is available for all other model variants.

Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV),

Also on the options list is the M Sport package Pro, which adds extended M highgloss shadowline exterior trim, M lights shadowline, an M rear spoiler and an M Sport braking system with red-painted callipers.

Colour choice is wide with two solid and 11 metallic paint finishes, including the new Fire Red metallic variant.

The interior is ultra-modern with a selection of sporting touches. The slender instrument panel, housing the BMW curved display, is joined by a ‘floating’ armrest with integral control panel. In the front section of the centre console are two cup holders and a smartphone tray with indirect illumination and wireless charging.

A REAL EYE-CATCHER, IT’S SPORTY AND DISTINCTIVE WITH A SLEEK COUPE-LIKE ROOF, QUIRKY FRONT KIDNEY GRILLE AND A HOST OF STRIKING FEATURES

Newly developed seats are also offered in the Veganza perforated variant and Vernasca leather with attractive quilting as alternatives to the standard cloth upholstery. And if you want to further up the ante, then help yourself to sport seats, electric seat adjustment with memory function and lumbar support (with a massage thrown in).

But so much of what you get with the new BMW X2 falls under ‘standard’, including two-zone automatic climate control, the navigation system BMW Maps and a sport leather steering wheel, automatic tailgate operation, four USB-C ports and a 12V power socket in both the centre console and the boot.

Highlights among the tempting options are steering wheel heating, Harman Kardon sound system and panoramic glass sunroof with dark-tinted glass extending to the windscreen and the roof frame on either side.

Light alloy wheels of up to 21 inches provide an optimum blend of agility and ride comfort, and everyday safety is well covered with the latest version of front collision warning system, cruise control with brake function, speed limit info and lane departure warning. The parking assistant including reversing assist camera and reversing assistant, also forms part of the standard equipment roster.

BMW ‘Digital Premium’ means you can enjoy in-car use of all the apps available for music streaming, video streaming, news or gaming, on a subscription basis. Digital interfaces – incorporating a stylish dashboard and 10.7 inch central display – fluently combine to present all the information you need and

the driver-oriented display can be controlled via touch/voice.

Basically, you want for nothing and, even better news, it is here right now and available for test drive * and purchase.

Driving the BMW X2 is a pleasure, the perfect balance of luxury, performance and versatility. It looks great and is crammed with high-quality equipment, cutting-edge technology and ergonomic comfort.

Truly a stand-out car on any catwalk. n

ANYONE FOR CRICKET?

Recent cricketing success in the middle is matched with success off the pitch as Wrea Green Cricket Club makes changes to promote cricket and revive an enthusiasm in the sport and the village, writes Ben Hall

The cricket club has a long tradition in the village and is synonymous with a summer afternoon and the sound of leather on willow in the idyllic English village setting. Many are the trophies and success stories that have been depicted on the wall of The Grapes pub where the changing rooms are located and cricket teas served. But it’s off the field that changes have breathed life back into the club.

As a member of the Palace Shield league structure since 1922, the club has always fielded two adult teams on a Saturday giving the village a look that is comparable to few others. It was a big moment for the club in 2019 when a vote was tabled to reduce the club to one team due to a lack of playing members. Few positives came from Covid-19. Club members were wary but with more free time available, decided that they would like to

return to some activity. Success followed, playing numbers swelled and a development plan started to evolve.

Wrea Green Cricket Club (WGCC) does not fit a traditional club. There is no club house, no power, no toilets, but the vista is unique. The opportunity to land the ball in ‘The Dub’ (a large pond on the village green) and create a splash in reality and metaphorically, is appealing to many though the struggle to keep equipment such as sightscreens off site presents its own unique challenges.

The Palace Shield league help promote the growth in standards of cricket and their ground audit cannot account for these exceptional factors. Wrea Green’s ground officially ranks as sub-standard on paper but is possibly one of the most charming and picturesque grounds, regularly featuring as a favourite away trip for the amateur player despite the walk to the changing rooms, but then, they are above the pub!

MANY ARE THE TROPHIES AND SUCCESS STORIES THAT HAVE BEEN DEPICTED ON THE WALL OF THE GRAPES PUB WHERE THE CHANGING ROOMS ARE LOCATED AND CRICKET TEAS SERVED

Sport at the amateur level relies on volunteers and funding. The Wilson family were not only landlords of the village pub when WGCC joined the leagues but have since been involved in village cricket with Richard Wilson the current chairman. Asked for his opinion on what village cricket means, Richard said: “It is a symbol of summer. It is a conversation starter and interconnects villagers, businesses, the school and passers-by. A mid-summers day with people using The Green like they have for more than a hundred years is comforting to all generations and brings people together. We understand that giving back is important and now have a junior section that is run by volunteers to provide a link into keeping alive something that is synonymous with Wrea Green for many years to come.”

Triumphs on the field have been regular with the most recent being the promotions

of the 1st XI and 2nd XI over the last two seasons, but behind the scenes is where the real wins have been. The re-introduction of a junior section has given focus to some of the young people in the village and is driven by villager, groundsman, ex-player, and coach, John Lyon – formally recognised by Lancashire Cricket as winner of their ‘Gamechanger Award’ last year. At a time when playing numbers are dwindling in school cricket, Wrea Green have taken the view that now is the time to invest – once the game is gone, it’s gone.

There is an under 15s team playing hard-ball and two national programmes designed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The All Stars and Dynamos programmes connect directly into professional grade including the Hundred tournament with the incentive of tickets and even mascot opportunities. First and foremost, the programmes deliver fun as well as skills. Summer evenings spent watching your nearest and dearest and sharing a chat (and a drink!) with friends is a win on all levels. Developing these programmes alone is great, but it also allows access to development funding from the ECB distributed by Lancashire Cricket.

The Palace Shield League awarded monies to improve the scorebox and a recent application has been made for an ECB sustainability grant which was approved in April 2024. This has allowed the club to develop its unique scorebox – a converted trailer chassis, wheeled onto The Green for matches to a modern lightweight body. Added solar panels provide an electric supply as the club embraces the 21st century (but retains its quirks).

The club want the whole of the village to feel involved in this project. A £25 vice-president scheme provides an income and gives a discount to those who buy it. Local businesses support the club through

WREA GREEN HAVE TAKEN THE VIEW THAT NOW IS THE TIME TO INVEST –ONCE THE GAME IS GONE, IT’S GONE

sponsorship and advertising features plus they support club events hosted at the limited facilities available to the club. This isn’t only focused on taking – all fundraising is based on the principle of providing something rather than just asking for funds. One such example is curry night. This is an exchange with a sponsor where the food is supplied and all proceeds go to the club. The attendance numbers suggest the village enjoys the evening and booking a table at the restaurant supplying the curry for the few weeks before the event needs prompt reservation or the risk of disappointment is high!

Wrea Green Cricket Club know their place –winning isn’t always done on the field, but having one of the prettiest does help! n

Chew’s Yard, probably named after a former owner as was the custom of yesteryear, was once occupied by Walker Windows which has since relocated to Preston Docklands. The thoughtfully redesigned industrial workshops feature a host of independent traders and this charming space is large enough to contain five food stalls, communal dining space for 150 people and with room for live entertainment. Another huge open area with an industrial, quirky charm contains a bar and leads to outside space, with the versatility to host a number of different events.

The beautifully landscaped garden courtyard also has an outdoor bar. On warm days, this peaceful green oasis, with a south-west facing aspect, will be the place to escape, capture the

BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO THE CITY CENTRE

Chew’s Yard is an ambitious project led by Preston designer Ben Casey and cultural creator Christine Cort. This historic area of Preston, once overlooked, is now buzzing with life thanks to their vision as Alma Stewart discovers. Photography: Michael Porter

Though the Preston Playhouse was built as a Friends Meeting House for Quakers in 1847, it has been a well-known city centre theatre since 1949. But are you familiar with the rest of Market Street West, the home of the Playhouse? If you aren’t, you soon will be!

Running directly behind Friargate, those of a certain age will remember this particular area of the city centre because of The Gatsby and the Cherry Tree nightclubs on Great Shaw Street which were across the car park from Chew’s Yard. Also along this historic street, you will find Chain House Brewery Co and Lost Bar and Pizzeria, housed in one of Preston’s oldest buildings.

This street is of particular interest to designer Ben Casey. Born in Deepdale, Ben is a former Head of the School of Design at the University of Central Lancashire and established The Chase in Manchester in 1986, now one of the most awarded creative consultancies in the world. “I’ve worked and lived in Manchester and London.” said Ben, “Something like this in those cities would not have any impact, but here in Preston, it makes such a big difference so why not breathe more life into this formerly unloved area of the city centre?”

Joining him in this epic vision is Christine Cort, former Group Marketing Director at Time Out, the culture, entertainment and events magazine. Christine, originally from Blackburn, now runs her own company CC&Friends working on projects she finds inspiring across the world with people she admires. Previous to that, she co-founded the biennial Manchester International Festival (MIF) in 2005 where she was Managing

WHY NOT BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO THIS FORMERLY UNLOVED AREA OF THE CITY CENTRE?

Director. MIF is widely regarded as one of the most successful festivals in the world, with a reputation for staging world premieres and entirely new work, bringing visitors from across the globe to Manchester. Christine said: “When I was introduced to Ben through a mutual friend and heard of his plans, I caught his enthusiasm for the project. I saw Chew’s Yard in its derelict state but was moved by Ben’s determination to reinvent this area and I just had to get on board. We are both from humble beginnings and are passionate about giving something back to the community.”

sunshine and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat from noon until night. And now the people of Preston and beyond can enjoy the city’s newest, and most exciting, versatile venue.

Christine said: “Following on from the success of its 12 Days of Christmas Pop-Up in 2023, Chew’s Yard opened in early May with a packed programme of events catering for the whole family. It really was an incredible weekend! The opening night included singer-songwriter Rachel Waring getting the party started with upbeat, acoustic numbers followed by a spectacular explosion of colour and music as Lancaster’s 25 strong drumming group, Samba Espirito, got the party going with a parade along Market Street West. All our guests had a fantastic time.”

An exciting mix of live music, DJs, familyfriendly events and creative sessions is set to be hosted in the events’ space. The Chew’s Yard Market returned on Saturday 4th May featuring artists, makers, craftspeople, photographers and creatives. Not only can visitors enjoy the facilities, the venue is also available for private hire.

It is a great start to Ben’s vision for creating a new cultural destination on Market Street West, having opened Lost Bar and Pizzeria and leasing his building to Chain House Brewery Co. The destination is called Market Street Social and will blend cultural activities with food, drink and entertainment. A billboard style outdoor art gallery along the opposite car park is also being planned.

The next phase, featuring a pub, wine bar and outdoor balcony sounds just as exciting:

PRESTONIANS SEEM TO APPRECIATE WHAT WE ARE PROVIDING HERE –TRULY INDEPENDENT VENUES WHERE COMMUNITY MATTERS

“Establishing Chew’s Yard is part of the first phase and the next plans include creating a pub on the theme of the Battle of Preston with one level reflecting the New Model Army and the other, the Royalists – it’s going to be a very exciting development. The pub will feature a glass terrace and will be home to a cocktail lounge with the ground floor a spit and sawdust pub selling great beer and pies.

WE ARE BOTH FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS AND ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT GIVING SOMETHING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

“Prestonians seem to appreciate what we are providing here –truly independent venues where community matters. Chew’s Yard has already hosted community-centred events with visitors from two months old to 86 years old plus a number of four legged friends. At our pop-up event last year, we welcomed some visitors from Manchester who were killing time due to a train strike and ended up spending eight hours with us! They took real pleasure introducing Chew’s Yard to all their friends and family – it was a proud moment,” said Ben. The venue hosts a variety of independent traders, each offering unique experiences:

• Trough: Curated grazing options showcasing the best of British produce from the founders of Goosnargh Gin.

• Seitanic: A plant-based kebab venture that gained popularity during a Christmas pop-up.

• Chamo: A top-ranked South American street food known for quality and affordability.

• Two Guns: Bringing Detroit pizza vibes with Italian influences to Preston.

• Escapade: Serving draft beer from Thornbridge and high-quality coffee from Atkinsons Coffee Roasters.

Christine concluded: “We are punching high, but Ben and I truly believe in the potential of the venue and of Market Street Social. If Chew’s Yard’s opening weekend was anything to go by, we know we can continue to bring customers some wonderful entertainment, food and drink. There are exciting further plans in place and together, Ben and I have the imagination and ambition to make it work not only as a cultural destination, but as a welcoming communal hub where people can come and enjoy this unique and special place.” n

WISWELL WIZARDRY

I’m very lucky to have a job which many of my friends envy, but when I say I’m off to the Freemasons, I can see them turning green with envy. Situated in the medieval hamlet of Wiswell, snuggled between Clitheroe and Whalley, this epitome of the English country pub contains many delicious secrets.

I’m welcomed by Felix, the General Manager, head of the friendly front of house team. Flagged stone floors and muted heritage colours, perfectly accented by antique rugs and period oil paintings and prints, create a stylish and comfortable setting.

Lovers of grape and grain may find it hard to pass the bar, which boasts a wide selection

of traditional cask-conditioned ales from award-winning independent breweries, and a cellar covering the world of wine. But, like many who return time and again to this award-winning restaurant, I’m here for the food.

To my delight, I’m taken through to the kitchen itself, which offers two unique dining options, firstly the elegant Chef’s Table, which seats up to 12 in full view of the busy kitchen. I pop up on one of four stools at the Kitchen Bench, set centrally in the heart of the action.

Matt Smith, head chef at the Freemasons at Wiswell, guides Kate Bowyer through the exquisite, new summer menu

Head chef Matt Smith, chats with me in between giving subtle directions to his tight-knit team, constantly tasting and conjuring up elegant creations for which the Freemasons has become renowned.

“The Freemasons is somewhere really special, on the wish list of many top chefs,” Matt says. “I’m lucky to be given the trust and freedom to be creative – it’s something you simply wouldn’t get anywhere else.”

The choice of menus alone confirms this, offering set and a la carte lunch and dinner menus which change with the seasons, five-course feasts, epic tasting menus and refreshingly, a fulsome vegetarian line-up. I challenge anyone to find a more interesting menu that includes duck liver parfit with raspberry and pickled walnut, through to Matt’s signature souffle, sweet granadilla passionfruit and alphonso mango, bitter chocolate sorbet with Malibu custard.

A plate of delicious cured salmon with buttermilk, caper and dill, sourdough crumpet and house pickles magically appears before me. Matt capitalises on the Ribble Valley’s rich source of local produce, pairing ingredients for the ultimate in taste, like my main course, Goosnargh chicken, honey and thyme roast breast, Spillmans asparagus, English peas, stuffed morels with toasted hay velouté.

START LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE

For the past 20 years, Neuro Linguistic Programming trainer, psychotherapist and hypnotherapist Sarah Fletcher, has been delivering transformational training which has now culminated in her first book, Kiss Your Life

From her home office in Cleveleys, Sarah wrote her entire book in just eight weeks. Completing this guide to succeeding in life may seem like an impossibly short timeframe, but this is the power of neuro linguistic programming (NLP).

Sarah gained a degree in psychology, a subject that fascinated her having experienced her father’s depression. Following this, she qualified as a teacher in 2001 and went on to also become a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist.

In the classroom, Sarah realised that she needed extra skills to further understand behaviour to engage learners and help them succeed. A colleague recommended NLP and as a new mum struggling with

NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING IS A PROVEN METHODOLOGY OF HUMAN EXCELLENCE EXPLAINING HOW SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE THINK, BEHAVE, AND COMMUNICATE

post-natal transition and mental health, the course looked to have the all the answers she needed. Sarah said: “Through NLP I was able to support my students and other teachers and I was showing up as my best self each day. It changed the way I related to myself and

others, the way I parented, and it gave me so many skills in the classroom to support my students.” Sarah became a qualified NLP Practitioner in 2007, a Master Practitioner in 2008 and an NLP trainer in 2019.

Neuro linguistic programming is a proven methodology of human excellence explaining how successful people think, behave, and communicate. It was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who studied successful therapists to identify patterns of effective communication, language, and behaviour change. Well-known coaches using this approach include Paul McKenna and Tony Robbins.

Sarah left teaching in 2017 to follow her dream of building a successful coaching and training business training NLP to coaches, leaders, educators, therapists, and business owners so they can lead themselves

successfully and help others. She said: “It is incredibly powerful and these skills cause a ripple effect. If people show up for themselves through a journey of self-discovery and inner transformations, they inspire those around them.”

“As an NLP trainer and coach, I help individuals to enhance all areas of their life. When people come for coaching, they are often feeling stuck and dissatisfied with some aspect of their life. NLP enables them to unlock possibilities that they haven’t even imagined and opens up a magical portal of opportunities for their life. When people learn to relate to themselves on a deeper level where they feel whole and loved, they give themselves permission to thrive in all areas of their life. NLP returns people back to what they have always known within them, so that they can follow their intuitive guidance and wisdom and live their truest lives.”

As a recent award-winning training and coaching organisation, Sarah offers face to face training within organisations or at her training venue in Blackpool. She also offers online virtual training and online courses. It was always her plan to be able to write about her expertise in a book: “I always said I wanted to write a book especially because certain books have had a significant impact on me. I wanted my book to be easy to use, dividing the contents into short chapters with coaching questions, exercises, simple daily practices and questions to ask yourself.”

Working with publishers Authors and Co, Sarah found the process of writing Kiss Your Life was a positive one: “I was given a year to compile the book and had great support from the Authors and Co team – they really did get it right from beginning to end. In December I decided I wanted to launch the book in spring and so ended up writing the whole thing quite quickly! The book was already planned in my head, it was just a matter of getting it on paper. And of course, modelling NLP, I set out with the intention of how and when to complete everything, get it out in the world and make it happen.”

Sarah has created a CALM guide – Create, Awareness, Learning, Mindset – as a way of keeping your life successfully simple. With proven methods from positive psychology,

neuroscience, neuro linguistic programming and coaching, this book has the potential to transform lives. Sarah has also said that she has a few more to write, the next one being before the end of this year.

IT’S ABOUT ADOPTING A METHODOLOGY FOR PERSONAL GROWTH, LEARNING TO TRAIN OUR BRAIN INTO HAPPINESS WITH GOOD HABITS –HOW TO BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE

The book has been a huge success so far, becoming an Amazon Bestseller. “It’s about adopting a methodology for personal growth, learning to train our brain into happiness with good habits – how to be who you want to be. It’s reminding people that they are the driver of their life, not the passenger. I have seen hundreds of lives transform in my coaching and training academy and my wish is that it brings readers the same,” Sarah concludes.

“We all get bogged down in external matters sometimes, and the good news is that we all have the power within us to change our lives. Imagine what an incredible place the world could be if we all realised how amazing we are individually and collectively. n

PRESTON PARK IS THE

PLACE TO PARTY!

Radio 2’s flagship annual live music event, Radio 2 in the Park, will take place this year in Moor Park, Preston. Alma Stewart talks to Head of Culture at Preston City Council, Timothy Joel, on securing such a popular event

It is an exciting time for Preston. With a number of investment projects including reimagining The Harris, the new Animate complex and a new city centre Youth Zone. Bringing such a huge music event is further helping put Preston on the visitor destination map. BBC Radio 2 is the UK’s most listened to radio station, with a weekly audience of 13.3 million, so for Radio 2 in the Park to head to Preston is quite a coup.

As Head of Culture, Tim Joel has been active in selling the city to a wider audience. He said: “Preston has been proactively seeking large-scale events for a while. Last year, we introduced our event location guide, promoting the city as an ideal event destination and highlighting the various outdoor event sites available.”

Early this year, the BBC invited Preston City Council to learn more about the BBC Radio 2 in the Park event and presented the opportunity for Preston to be the 2024 host city.

AFTER SEVERAL INTRODUCTORY MEETINGS AND SITE VISITS TO THE STUNNING GRADE II* LISTED MOOR PARK WE SUCCESSFULLY SECURED THE EVENT FOR OUR CITY

Tim continued: “Following several introductory meetings and site visits to the stunning Grade II* listed Moor Park – which the BBC event team was enamoured with –

we successfully secured the event for our city. This collaboration between the BBC and the council not only underscores the mutual interest in showcasing Preston as an exciting location for high-profile events, but also highlights the attractiveness of Moor Park as a venue. Its spacious layout, beautiful surroundings and excellent facilities make it an ideal choice for an event of this scale. We’re immensely proud that the BBC recognised our city’s potential and wanted Preston to host BBC Radio 2 in the Park.”

Securing the concert involved close collaboration between the council team and the BBC. The BBC had many questions about Preston’s transport links, parking capacity in and around the city, hotel capacity, and making sure Moor Park could host the event’s production. Potential concerns of local residents were taken into account, ensuring that the event’s planning and management would minimise any disruption. Meetings were also set up between the BBC and the police to discuss event planning, public safety and requirements and between the

BBC and the Leader of the Council, Chief Executive, and Deputy Chief Executive to agree to the event.

Some may remember that Preston hosted BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Moor Park in 2007. Last year Radio 2 in the Park was held in Victoria Park in Leicester featuring headliners Tears for Fears and Kylie Minogue, who performed her world exclusive full concert performance for the first time in four years.

“The licensed capacity for Moor Park was initially 19,999,” Tim continued, “however, to accommodate the scale of the event, we needed to increase this to 39,999. The council’s events team worked closely with the emergency services and statutory services to ensure all safety and logistical requirements were met. The licence application was open for public consultation for 28 days and fortunately, no public representations were received, leading to the successful grant of the licence.”

IT’S A MOMENTOUS OCCASION FOR US, AND WE’RE EAGER TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT

The decision to secure the concert was made by the council, but it was a result of the close collaboration with partners, working hand in hand with the police to ensure their support and involvement in the planning process. Moving forward, the council will continue to work with partners including the Business Improvement District (BID), Preston Partnership, Preston North End FC and others to ensure the successful delivery of this major event, demonstrating the unity and strength of the community.

Councillor Matthew Brown, Leader at Preston City Council, echoes residents’ excitement at the news: “We were over the moon to learn such a prestigious event is coming to Preston! This presents an incredible opportunity for the city, welcoming visitors from near and far and showcasing our great city to national television and radio audiences. The confirmation of the BBC Radio 2 in the Park means we’ll benefit from media coverage that money simply can’t buy. It’s a momentous occasion for us, and we’re eager to make the most of it. Hosting Radio 2 in the Park is just the beginning.”

Hosting the event should firmly place Preston on the map, demonstrating that the city can host major events of scale and showcasing Moor Park as an ideal venue.

Tim concluded: “The success of BBC Radio

in the Park last year in Leicester generated increased interest and we’re optimistic that other event promoters will consider Preston for their future events. This is an exciting time for our city and we’re looking forward to the possibilities it brings. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to Preston and making Radio 2 in the Park an unforgettable experience for all!”

The station will be decamping to the city for two days, along with many of its presenters. The full artist line-up will be revealed in early June, and tickets will go on sale shortly after. n

LAUGHING OUT LOUD

Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, Woofers Comedy Club has featured a host of comics to its delighted audiences. Alma Stewart finds out more from founder and host, Phil Walker. Photography: Mick Ellison

It is perhaps inevitable that the children of comedian and Catchphrase host, Roy Walker, would follow him into the world of showbusiness and each of the three have done just that – but Phil is the one who carries the comedy baton.

The Walker family settled in St Annes because of the town’s close proximity to the venues in Blackpool and Manchester where Roy performed. Phil attended St Bede’s Catholic High School.

Though Phil didn’t aim for a career in showbiz, he found himself leaving his post at Blackpool’s North Shore Golf Club to enter the world of a Pontin’s Bluecoat. Phil said:

“As kids, Josie, Mark and I spent our school holidays wherever dad was appearing for the summer season. We grew up watching the greats. I was a shy kid and spent the first few years of my career as an assistant golf pro, but after a while, I knew it wasn’t for me. Dad suggested I audition for Pontin’s to see if I would like it and I found myself going from tees to knobbly knees.”

A season at Pontin’s Hemsby saw Phil bitten by the showbusiness bug and he went on to work for the Derbyshire Miners Holiday

THROUGH HIS WIDE VARIETY OF GIGS, PHIL SPOTTED A GAP TO BRING COMEDY TO THE FYLDE COAST AND CREATED WOOFERS COMEDY CLUB IN 2014 AT LYTHAM CRICKET CLUB

Camp in Skegness, performing in its variety show six nights a week. In its heyday, some of the stars that performed here included Mike and Bernie Winters, Kenny Ball and Tommy Cooper. Here, Phil learned a lot about his craft, eventually progressing to performing at working men’s clubs.

But Phil remembers where and when he told his first joke on stage: “We were on the Canberra cruise ship as my dad was booked for some gigs. I entered the talent contest and told one of my dad’s jokes that I had heard him rehearsing. When my dad went on to perform his spot and told the same joke, a heckler shouted: ‘Hey, your son has already told that joke!’”

including Jongleurs, The Stand, The Last Laugh, The Frog and Bucket, Komedia, and Laughter Lounge Dublin. His international performances have taken him to Sensatori hotels’ Comedy Cellar and cruise ships with Carnival.

With comedy heroes including Les Dawson and Bobby Ball, who helped Phil in his early career, plus Norman Collier, it’s no wonder Phil turned to the business of laughter: “Norman Collier was just so different in his day, he was totally original, way before alternative comedy appeared,” Phil added.

Phil’s career took him to the comedy club scene. In 2002, his talent was recognised when he was voted City Life Comedian of the Year at the famous Comedy Store in Manchester, joining the ranks of previous winners such as Peter Kay and Steve Coogan. As a headline act, Phil has graced the stages of leading comedy clubs across the country,

Through his wide variety of gigs, Phil spotted a gap to bring comedy to the Fylde Coast and created Woofers Comedy Club in 2014 at Lytham Cricket Club where demand outstripped tickets. Some of the people who performed in this intimate venue included Jason Manford as Phil recalls: “I had got to know Jason on the Manchester club scene and he is a really nice fella. He knew about Woofers and out of the blue he contacted me to ask if he could try out 10 minutes of new material and of course I jumped at the chance. Those 10 minutes turned into an hour and people are still talking about the impromptu set now!”

Lytham’s Lowther Pavilion approached

Phil and wife Janet with the offer of hosting the club in its theatre: “We have always loved the Lowther,” Phil said, “We were frequent visitors especially watching our daughter Verity in school performances hosted there, so it’s a circle of life moment to be performing there each month. The theatre helps with the tickets sales which allows me to concentrate on booking the acts which I try to mix up each time so there are different comic styles. The crowd is great – there is no heckling and everyone comes off stage buzzing, you feel like you are performing to friends.”

THE SHOWS ARE HEADLINED BY ACTS WHO HAVE FEATURED REGULARLY ON TV SHOWS SUCH AS LIVE AT THE APOLLO AND MOCK THE WEEK

The shows are headlined by acts who have featured regularly on TV shows such as Live at the Apollo and Mock the Week, as well as featuring the latest emerging stars, and occasionally comedy legends such as Steve Royle and Mick Miller. With Phil as the regular host at the helm of the Woofers comedy experience you are pretty much guaranteed a great night out!

“We’ve recently signed up for more dates with Lowther Pavilion up to 2025,” Phil concluded, “so I’ll continue to bring all types of comics to Lytham – we’d love to see you there!” n
