Magazines Editor You may have guessed that this is the annual men’s issue of Live Ribble Valley magazine. In keeping with the theme, we meet the Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling (RWPC) men’s team featured on our front cover. The RWPC team recently jetted out to Calpe in Spain where they underwent some serious training for the competition season that is now underway. Back in the UK, the team have already enjoyed a number of prestigious wins with their impressive race strategies and new aerodynamic, Ultra SL R edition machines, engineered by Ribble Cycles, whose flagship showroom is just outside Clitheroe. Staying with the need for speed, we talk to Tom Hardman, racer of historic automobiles. Twelve years ago, Tom, whose first vintage car was a 1929 Austin 7, set up a unique business in the heart of the Ribble Valley, where he has a good number of iconic automobiles including a Bentley, Alvis, Aston Martin and Frazer Nash We are introduced to veteran and epic endurance athlete Darren Hardy, a Warrior Games gold medallist and Help for Heroes campaigner. Darren speaks about men’s mental health and talks about his next daredevil challenge - a triathlon in the Arctic circle, which will test him to the limit. Also, in this issue we turn the spotlight on world-class, award-winning cask ales brewed in the heart of Clitheroe at Bowland Brewery. Andrew Warburton is at the helm of this hugely successful microbrewery, which takes inspiration from the wildlife of the Forest of Bowland, creating craft beers such as Pheasant Plucker, which will represent the North West at London’s Olympia next year. We delve into history to trace the steps of Cromwell and his army, which crossed the bridge over the River Hodder back in 1648 and, fast forward to the mid-20th century, we discover a Clitheroe-born footballer, who was selected for England more than 20 times and captained Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1960 FA Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers. But it’s not all about the men in this month’s magazine – rest assured the Queen’s Silver Jubilee will undoubtedly take centre stage here in the Ribble Valley, where there will be many celebrations to mark this historic milestone. Ranked number one in the UK, Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling men’s team competes on the world stage and has made a great start to the 2022 season, writes Jan Woolley

two-week spring training stint in Calpe, Spain, set up the Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling men’s team to embark on a season that has already seen 15 wins in the UK and Europe. With high hopes for the Tour of Britain in September, the number-one ranked team in the UK are in great shape and their impressive new Ultra SL R edition machines, engineered by Ribble Cycles, are already attracting lots of attention. “It’s Ribble’s flagship performance professional road bike and we have definitely seen a step up – particularly in the flat races,” says team rider Jack Rees. “It really attracts attention with its handlebars, engineering, aerodynamics and colours that work with the kit. The Ultra SL R is a significant part of Ribble’s reputation for innovation, and we are

GLOBAL SUCCESS seeing marginal gains across all areas. As a team we optimise all areas of performance from our bikes to our race strategy.” The pre-season training saw the team fly to Alicante to escape the cold British weather in February: “Calpe is brilliant – it’s a mecca for cyclists. It was great for us from a training perspective as a team, being all together. “We invited the nutritionist and our clothing partners – it was very much open house and was a very productive two weeks. It is all about teamwork and working collaboratively,” says Jack, who is the team’s operational director, responsible for competition logistics, organising transport for the bikes, riders and support team. “While there was undoubtedly a lot more barriers last year when travelling, we have managed quite well this year – it’s been easier,” says Jack, who was part of the Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling (RWPC) team that won the Tour Series last year.

The RWPC team is a UCI Continental team that was founded in 2017 to provide a platform for developing riders, allowing them to compete at global level.

AS A TEAM WE OPTIMISE ALL AREAS OF PERFORMANCE FROM OUR BIKES TO OUR RACE STRATEGY Having enjoyed considerable success, the team now competes all over the world in some of the leading cycle races on the calendar. They have riders based across the North of England and the Midlands, with riders also competing across the UK from national championships to local circuit races. Since the team’s inception, the riders have raced in Belgium, France, Poland, Spain, Qatar and Hong Kong – a truly global calendar. Among the races they have competed in so far this season has been the 80k Eddie

Soens Memorial at Aintree, which saw Ribble Weldite’s Cameron Jeffers win: “Cameron is a Lancashire lad and he was the first one to win a race on the new bike,” says Jack, who also competed with the team in the same race. Last month in the Rutland Classic – the UK’s only single-day, international professional men’s cycle road race, contested over a 180k course, saw Ribble Weldtite’s Finn Crockett sprinting down the arrow-straight finishing road to win the race. As a British brand Barrow-based Ribble Cycles, whose flagship showroom is just outside Clitheroe, are proud to be the title partner to the British team, as Jack explains: “We are a British team flying the flag for a British brand. We are very much a progressive group and we have some really strong riders.” Among the Ribble Weldtite 14-strong team are the Tanfield brothers, who were signed by RWPC last year. The Yorkshireborn brothers, Harry and Charlie, are

world class riders who have a background in Olympic and World Tour competition. Before joining the RWPC line-up Harry spent three years competing at World Tour level. An accomplished time trialist and single-day specialist, and having participated in the Vuelta a España, his addition has strengthened the team’s stage racing capabilities. The younger of the brothers, Charlie, competed with Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics and has Commonwealth Gold, World and European Championship medals along with multiple national titles. Having had a great start to the 2022 season, the team continue to train hard and meticulously prepare: “With all competitions preparation is key,” says Jack. “We cover as many areas as we can. Obviously, the bike and equipment is central and we have full time mechanics on board. Nutrition has also been re-evaluated – we are on a really high-volume, carb-fuelling strategy to ensure top level performance.

CAMERON IS A LANCASHIRE LAD AND HE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO WIN A RACE ON THE NEW BIKE “We also put a lot of work in before a race preparing around the weather conditions – that can have a real impact both here in the UK and in Europe. “We are making great strides around the world.” Enjoying their success and keen to encourage young riders, the RWPC team visits schools and colleges throughout the country: “We conduct assemblies and do lots of ‘meets and greets’ at family events to promote the team and the sport.” The team are also involved in a Derbybased academy that enables young riders to progress in the sport and to pursue professional careers in cycling. Jack concludes: “The Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling team have a great following within the community which is fantastic. We really do want to establish a legacy that will help the young riders of the future.” n

A mixture of contemporary and traditional Styles When Dave and Gill embarked on a large-scale renovation of a bungalow near Bury they turned to Kitchen Design Centre and designer Paul Harrington to create their dream space. The kitchen was central to the overall design and the couple wanted it to form the main part of the large open-plan space. Working from architect’s plans, Paul designed a kitchen based on their love of a showroom display. A perfect mix of handle-less contemporary and modern shaker style was combined and a large island became the main element of the design. Paul adapted the design as the architect’s plans changed. Initially, a peninsular was proposed but when Dave and Gill decided to take more space from the garage and increase the size of the kitchen, Paul adapted the design and introduced a large island instead. To ensure continuity, he then mirrored the breakfast bar wood material in the open shelving behind. Symmetry was key in the design so Paul followed this with the Neff ovens and the handle trim illumination in the island creates the ‘wow’ factor. The installation was faultless and Dave and Gill were delighted with everything from their initial contact with Paul and their visit to the showroom right through to the fitters who worked seamlessly with their other contractors. Dave loved the renovation project so much he has the bug to do it all again and he wouldn’t hesitate to use Kitchen Design Centre.

Designer Paul Harrington says, “This was fantastic to work on. I literally had a blank canvas and a superb amount of space. Dave and Gill trusted me with the design and when the space increased it was ideal for a large island. Mixing contemporary and traditional styles works so well. I’m delighted with the finished kitchen.”

to buy bags of salad from the supermarket – which means you will also be cutting down on plastic packaging. If you are going to grow them in a container pick one that is approximately 30cm wide or larger. Try mizuna loose-leaved lettuce, rocket or endive. You can also sow pak choi, Swiss chard and beetroot to harvest their colourful, tasty leaves. Once the salad leaves are 10cm tall – which will be in about three to four weeks – snip them off with scissors to just above ground level and they will re-sprout for a second or third time. If you give them some liquid plant food after each harvest they will re-grow more rapidly. Dwarf French beans is the veg that keeps on giving during the summer months. As long as you pick them as soon as they are ready they will keep on cropping all summer long. They need good fertile soil, so make sure you dig in some compost, and climbing varieties need canes for support.Young plants can be planted out at the end of May or you can sow seeds now directly into the soil where you want them to grow, at 20cm intervals. Water

FOR A TOUCH OF COLOUR TRY SOME EDIBLE FLOWERS – THEY CAN BE GROWN FROM SEED AND ARE EASY TO SOW If you’re new to growing vegetables, beetroot is a good, easy-to-grow option. The seeds don’t need much encouragement to germinate and they require little maintenance once established. Being a root crop, beetroot does best if the soil is free of large stones. The same is true of carrots. If you want carrots with plenty of flavour, it’s definitely worth growing your own. Both beetroot and carrot seeds tend to germinate within a couple of weeks and you should be harvesting fresh beetroot in eight to 10 weeks and carrots in 14 to 16 weeks. Finally, for a touch of colour try some edible flowers – they can be grown from seed and are easy to sow. Nasturtiums seeds are simply pushed straight into soil

in spring or summer and the flowers taste a touch peppery. Pot Marigolds are also sown at this time of year and their orange flowers have a zingy citrus flavour. The Royal Horticultural Society say: “As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.” n

With these two variations – an automatic chronograph and a quartz chronograph – TAG Heuer continues to pay tribute to admired motor racing legend Ayrton Senna. Considered one of the best drivers of all time, Senna embodied the quest for excellence and performance. Fast, brilliant and fearless, the Brazilian driver never stopped pushing himself beyond the limit. The collaboration between TAG Heuer and Senna started in 1988 and, over the course of his career, the long-standing TAG Heuer ambassador broke many records. At the time, the Brazilian dominated Formula 1, becoming World Champion in 1988, 1989 and 1991. To pay tribute to his legacy, TAG Heuer continues its quest to create the perfect Formula 1 watch.

TAG Heuer unveiled the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Special Edition earlier this year with a stunning new livery and two new references – a new addition to the TAG Heuer Formula 1 best-seller collection. Thanks to its bolder design and advanced technical features, the timepiece is perfectly crafted incorporating all the graphic codes of the Formula 1 Team. For this new version, the designers highlighted the bold colours of the Red Bull Racing Team, such as the mythical dark blue and striking red tones. The new blue sun-brushed dial with a customised minuterie featuring vibrant yellow and red touches is the perfect example of this. The 1/10th second chronograph counter at six o’clock also has yellow and red details and the chronograph central second hand is highlighted in yellow. The Arabic numeral indexes are directly inspired by racing car speedometers and Formula 1 connoisseurs will also notice the subtle reference to their favourite sport in the form of a line above the five and seven numerals. The line is designed to evoke the starting line of a Formula 1 track. The new dial is also inspired by Formula 1 car cockpits and is highly legible to make the time easy to read in all conditions. Where it all began

In what was a complex challenge, the professionals at Renovo Dental formulated a dental implant plan that has been a huge success for patient Jack Morris

s an extremely active 83-yearold, Jack Morris has undergone life-changing, dental implant treatment that has given him the smile he has always wanted. Jack has also seen the benefits to his health and confidence too – and it’s all thanks to the professionals at Renovo Dental. Following treatment to improve bone density and the health of Jack’s gums, a period of healing followed before the final implant-supported teeth were fitted – and the results have been transformative for Jack:

a special interest in aesthetic and implant dentistry, readily agreed to see Jack, who went along to the beautifully restored Renovo surgery in the village of Chatburn: “Usman carried out the assessment – and while he said implants would be quite complex, he said it was possible.” Usman explains: “Jack had been told that implants just weren’t possible, but he persevered. He was struggling with loose fitting, partial dentures and was finding it difficult to eat. “During the initial assessment a CT scan was done and yes, it revealed Jack didn’t have sufficient bone. So, we agreed that bone grafting was the solution.” Bone grafting was performed to replace destroyed bone surrounding the teeth roots. The bone graft then helped to serve as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone. Testament to their skills, the team at Renovo, carried out the bone graft procedure in the same visit as the implant placements.

CROMWELL IN L ANCASHIRE G enerations of travellers along the B6243 between Clitheroe and Hurst Green have been charmed by the crossing of Lower Hodder Bridge. Here, the river is beautiful both upstream and downstream. Most eyes, however, will be trained on a man-made feature just a few yards downstream of the present bridge, namely an older bridge: a fine, high, three-arched structure which can still be crossed on foot with care. By long tradition this is ‘Cromwell’s Bridge’, but what are the facts?

Historian and fell-walker Andrew Stachulski takes a look at a celebrated bridge, the Civil War and its Lancashire connections Without question, the Lord Protector-to-be was in the area in 1648, en route to the Battle of Preston. That proved to be a significant victory for Cromwell over a joint English and Scottish army, which effectively ended any armed support for the Royalist cause from that quarter. Indeed, this battle concluded the second

phase of the Civil War – the final trial, sentencing and execution of Charles I took place just a few months later. It is believed that Cromwell stayed at Stonyhurst for one night prior to the battle – a long-held tradition maintains that he slept in his armour through suspicion of his Catholic hosts. Cromwell arrived in Lancashire

from the east, via Skipton, Gisburn and Stonyhurst, surprising the Royalist forces who had become spread over a long distance. At Preston, there was fierce fighting around modern-day Ribbleton Lane, but soon Cromwell’s troops had gained a decisive victory. The Royalist forces were scattered. But what of the bridge? All the evidence is that it is old enough, probably built by Sir Richard Shireburn, lord of the manor, in 1562. The present road bridge is much more recent, probably built around 1820.

Anyone who has seen the old bridge at close quarters, however, might be slightly incredulous at the thought of hundreds or thousands of troops crossing it. Most likely the majority of Cromwell’s ‘model army’, as they became known, would have forded the river on foot. I have certainly crossed the bridge once, long ago, but no recommendation to follow is offered. The stonework is quite narrow, and the highest point feels decidedly exposed. You have been warned! In these days, when so much is made of the Tolkien Trail and Tolkien’s involvement with Stonyhurst, the setting is definitely evocative. A short distance downstream from Lower Hodder is the confluence of Hodder and Ribble, and in a further half-mile the Calder joins the combined stream. This juxtaposition of the bridge with the merging of three rivers finds a clear parallel in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy – Tolkien’s Brandywine Bridge, within the Shire, crosses the Brandywine and is close to the Withywindle and Shirebourne rivers. Of all the walks you can do from the Hurst Green-Stonyhurst area, the visit to Lower Hodder should definitely not be omitted. For the walker, the Hodder makes a splendid companion, combining delightful scenery with interesting wildlife. The section between Lower and Higher Hodder bridges, where you are never more than a mile or so from Stonyhurst College, is particularly fine. Grey wagtail, dipper, kingfisher, heron and less common ducks such as goosander are all likely to be seen – and you may

place in the county. Additionally, many were struck down by a severe bout of the plague around 1644 to 1646. For a more detailed study of this period, take a look at Lancashire At War: Cavaliers and Roundheads 1642-1651, by J J Bagley and A S Lewis (Dalesman Books, 1977). It seems a far cry indeed from the idyllic modern-day setting of Lower Hodder Bridge. n

he Pony Club offers a wide range of opportunities and qualifications, which allow members of all ages and abilities to set goals and strive to accomplish them. For the youngest members, this begins with Mini Achievement Badges which can be earned at Badge Days. These aim to provide members with a solid foundation of knowledge to ease them into the learning of horsemanship. Some of the many topics include points of the pony, yard safety, leading and handling, dressage movements and even things like wildlife and birds. For junior members there are the main

Achievement Badges, which cover topics in much more depth and detail. Last month, Chipping members had the opportunity to earn badges at our Easter Badge Day, where instructors and older members taught them all they needed to know about leading, road safety and equine behaviour. Lots of fun was had by all involved and the day finished off with a big Easter egg hunt where members displayed their true camaraderie and banded together to find every last egg and make sure everyone had their fair share. Everyone went home with a bag of eggs, a handful of badges and a smile on their face, and we can’t wait to see the badges on display on their Pony Club jumpers at the next rally – better get sewing! These badges are all supplementary to the Pony Club Tests, where members must put their horsemanship into practice in both a ridden section and a dismounted horse and pony care section. The tests range

Chipping holds rallies all year round, as well as an annual residential summer camp, where the primary focus of instructors is to aid members in attaining these tests, building confidence and skill with every lesson. The badge days are also advised for the horse and pony care side of the tests. It is no coincidence that the higher-level felts are often seen alongside an arm full of badges! DREAMS DO COME TRUE Highclere’s Jason Fildes reports on a memorable day that saw a syndicate-owned filly win the 1000 Guineas

hat an incredible story this is. In the world of horse racing where the big races are dominated by the financial superpowers of Arab owners or the Irish Coolmore organisation, a filly, bought for only £60,000, owned by a syndicate, wins one of the five British Classics at odds of 18-1. This is what happened at the famous Rowley Mile Racecourse at Newmarket. Last year Cachet, trained by George Boughey, ran eight times, having only been bought at the breeze up sales in April. Her season finished off with that memorable trip to the Breeders’ Cup in California in November. After that, George gave her a well-earned break before her reappearance in the Nell Gwynn Stakes at Newmarket. She won that day, encouraging us to have a crack at the 1000 Guineas, the second of the Classics run over one mile for three-year-old fillies, to be held on the first Sunday in May. Although only an outsider in the field of 13, we were hopeful of a good run, perhaps in the first six but expectations were rightfully

limited with the best fillies from Ireland and France among the opposition plus the Godolphin and Juddmonte-owned fillies from top UK stables. Nevertheless, the nerves and excitement among the large group of Highclere owners and friends was building – and by race time of 3.40pm it was at fever pitch!

Our trainer, George Boughey is only 29 years old and has only been training for three years. George’s rise has been phenomenal and he is a trainer with a huge future. He had Cachet looking fabulous for the big day and primed to perfection. Our jockey, James Doyle, was a substitute for William Buick who was claimed to ride for

Godolphin in a late switch and James’ plan was to let Cachet jump out of the stalls and bowl along in front, where she likes to be. It worked brilliantly as James was able to take her along in the lead without having to go too fast in front. She settled beautifully and was clearly enjoying herself and in a great rhythm. She was still a length in front at the 2f pole when James asked her to stretch on and she did – extending her advantage with some of the favourites not making any impression on her. It’s a long last furlong up a slight incline and it seemed like everything was in slow motion. Having been in front all the way, Cachet was getting tired but she’s tough and kept on bravely all the way to the line. It was only a neck back to the second, but she had held on. Cue delirious scenes in the stands with all the owners hugging one another in disbelief and what a welcome our wonderful filly got when she returned to the Winner’s Enclosure. I think the celebrations are still going on in certain parts of the country but suffice to say that Cachet has now won over £450k in prize money and is heading next for either the French 1000 Guineas at Longchamp, Paris, or Royal Ascot (or even both). George reports her to be really well and ready to go again. She loves her racing. Highclere boss Harry Herbert was very emotional afterwards. Cachet was bought by his nephew, Jake Warren and it’s a lifetime ambition realised in Highclere’s 30th anniversary year. What an achievement – and what a thrill for all of us involved! n

THE ULTIMATE ENDURANCE TEST In the month we recognise Mental Health Awareness Week, Emma Brereton talks to Darren Hardy – veteran, world record holder, Warrior Games double gold medallist, motivational speaker and Ribble Cycles’ Ultra Endurance Athlete

n 2017 veteran Darren Hardy was medically discharged from the forces after suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – a mental illness so synonymous with those who have served our country, it’s easy to forget that when soldiers return to their family and loved ones, settling back into normal routine is not always straight forward. As part of his recovery, Darren has used the last five years to retrain his brain and challenge his body to the maximum. He has also made it his duty to help others and raise awareness of men’s mental health issues. According to mentalhealth.org.uk in England, around one in eight men has a common mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder or

obsessive-compulsive disorder. Furthermore, three times as many men than women die by suicide and men aged 40 to 49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK. Sadly, this is largely down to negative stigmas associated with mental health with only 36 per cent of NHS referrals for talking therapies are for men. Knowing how difficult it is for men to open up and talk candidly about feelings and experiences, Darren now uses extreme endurance events to help raise awareness of men’s mental health and talks openly about his own suffering to get other men to communicate better. Darren said: “There is very much a feeling of ‘stiff upper lip’ in the military and the male psyche also leans towards wanting to be the bread winner of the family, ultimately failing to recognise when they may need help. “For me I had to retrain the thoughts in my head. I needed to challenge myself so I became fitter, stronger and fuelled my body with what it needed and not what it thought it wanted.” Darren has undertaken some epic endurance races to keep up the momentum, such as the 10X 10X 10 Ironman which is 10 Ironmans over 10 days in 10 locations. It required him to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 1 12 miles and run 26.2 miles every single day and he did all of this for Help the Heroes. He is able to do such astounding events thanks to his partnership with Ribble Cycles

who take good care of every athlete they work with. “When I first looked into getting help for PTSD, I did it through the military and doing this Ironman for Help the Heroes allowed me to give something back. At the time of my first event, I didn’t even have a bike and it’s thanks to Ribble Cycles that I am well cared for every time I decide to undertake a new, risky challenge. It’s about making small changes and finding little things that can help with your daily mindset to allow

Darren also explains what you can do to help if you feel that someone you know may be going through a difficult time. “Everyone asks as routine if you’re okay and generally, even if you aren’t, you will say you’re fine. If you feel someone you are close to is having a hard time, get them out of the house, offer to go for a brew – it’s amazing how much people will open up over a cup of tea and even if you haven’t tackled the problem that’s troubling them, it’s likely you’ve made them feel less alone.” Darren is currently working towards his next daredevil challenge – a triathlon in the Arctic circle. He said: “I am in the process of working out the funding and logistics for this event but I am very much looking forward to testing myself in the most severe conditions on the planet. Live Magazines’ Tedd Walmsley looks forward to seeing improved roads in Clitheroe and urges readers to share their opinions during public consultation on future house building and development

ell let’s start with the good news this month. I was appalled at the condition of the roads in the conservation area around Castle Street in Clitheroe and was compelled to contact Cllr Sue Hind on the matter. Here’s what she had to say: “Clitheroe is a beautiful market town with a mediaeval castle as its centrepiece. But it is fast becoming Lancashire’s Cinderella because there has been no capital investment for so long. Other towns have pushed us into the role of poor relation, you only have to look at the investment poured into Padiham, Whalley et al. “So, I set up Clitheroe Town Team with a view to reviewing and hopefully solving long overdue public realm issues. Cabinet member for Highways, Charlie Edwards, was sympathetic to our cause as was the leader of LCC after her visit. “In LCC’s 2022 budget there appeared to be £300k funding for improving conservation areas in our county. This funding was only available via match funding from the district involved. RVBC agreed to be that district. Good news – their budget working group will meet late May to discuss and approve the spend which will be ratified at a Policy and Finance meeting in June/July. “Any timetable for carrying out this much-needed work will undergo robust consultation with local traders so everyone will become involved and take ownership. That’s the way communities work best – not top down.” n less good news – Cllr Ged Mirfin confirmed that crime in the Ribble Valley is on the rise with a 14 per cent increase year on year. A worrying trend. I haven’t time to delve into the type of crime but worryingly, violence associated with drink is firmly on the rise. I’ve asked the council for an update on CCTV improvements but, as yet, had no response. With regards to irate retailers, one local events organiser has used the Freedom of Information

Act to try and establish once and for all the costs of the ARC report. This was commissioned by the council and guesstimates range from £40k to 80k – an incredible amount of money that many, including me, feel could have been better spent to help businesses and footfall in ‘building back stronger’. Once they have this intel, I will share in my next column if that is possible. One of the report’s key criticisms of the council’s leadership and officers is poor communication and I’ve asked the leader of the council and head of communications to confirm a meeting to discuss the questions I’ve asked, and for them to clarify the future of the Ribble Valley in a two-page article – but as yet I’ve had no response. It’s also been pointed out to me that the @goribblevalley twitter page, the official site for Ribble Valley tourism has seen only one tweet in the last 12 months – I’m keen to understand how this can be possible? If this is the case, it’s very worrying and perhaps ARC make a valid point.

he last topic this month is quite a big one as we see public consultation on the next Core Strategy document – a vital plan used to guide development, including house building, over the forthcoming years. In a recent meeting with Cllr Kevin Horkin, he asked me to implore readers to share their thoughts and concerns with the council when given the opportunity. New homes are subject to levies from the builders known as Section 106 money. It’s meant to be used for infrastructure projects such as new schools and health centres and facilities to help with the influx of new residents to the Valley. Having watched and personally fought new building, notably in Longridge, there are now thousands of new homes built or passed for planning, but where are these new schools and surgeries? It’s bad enough in Clitheroe and Whalley but as Longridge is bordered by Preston, their City Council have also created huge new estates with what is now a creaking infrastructure. This is your opportunity to help guide the plan – please do it to help both yourself and your children to ensure the Ribble Valley remains one of the best places in the UK to live and work. The council are now on countdown to the 2023 elections – it’s my duty, on your behalf, to continue to ask the questions and hope to report back with some positive answers in our double summer issue in June. n

PUBLIC RIGHTS OF WAY OVER MY PROPERTY – WHAT ARE MY DUTIES? It is not uncommon for properties, particularly those in rural areas, to have public rights of way over them, which can be found on Ordnance Survey maps and are revealed by local searches when purchasing properties, explains Graeme Booth, property solicitor at Farleys

he majority of public rights of way come into existence by way of presumed dedication ie long use by the public without interruption or objection. They can also be created by the Highway Authorities if they believe that a right of way over certain land would add to the public’s convenience and enjoyment, or by a landowner expressly dedicating a route across their property for the benefit of the public. Public rights of way can take several forms: • Footpaths – for walking, running, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs • Bridleways – for walking, horse riding, bicycles, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Restricted byways – for any transport without a motor and mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs • Byways open to all traffic – for any kind of transport, including cars When a public right of way crosses private property, whilst the Highways Agency is responsible for maintaining the surface, the property owner must not allow it to be obstructed. This can include: • Stopping vegetation next to the right of way from overhanging or encroaching it in such a way as to cause an obstruction • Providing and maintaining stiles and gates in a condition that is safe and convenient for public use • Ensuring that the width of bridleways is at least 3m and footpaths at least 1.5m. When a right of way crosses a field, the widths reduce to 2m for a bridleway and 1m for footpaths • If the property is farmland, observing guidance on keeping cattle in fields that have public access, as prescribed by the

Health and Safety Executive eg bulls over the age of 10 months of particular breeds must not be kept in fields with public access. Landowners can be prosecuted for keeping any potentially dangerous animal on land crossed by a right of way • Likewise, if a right of way crosses a field, keeping it free from crops or other cultivation. If a property owner wishes to carry out works to their property that will impact upon a public right of way, they may need permission from the local authority and they must ensure that the right of way is reinstated and marked on the ground after the works have been carried out. n

he theme for this month’s article is very much based on the past present and future. We stand on the shoulders of those who lived before, to be where we are reliant on future generations to take us where we want to be. I had the opportunity to reflect further on my 30th anniversary of being an MP – I have witnessed lots of changes. It is the people working in Parliament who make it and I am grateful for being afforded the opportunity to hone my skills over such a long period of time and my present job of being Deputy Speaker is incredibly rewarding especially working so closely with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who is a consummate professional in his role as Speaker. It was a shame not to have the Queen at the State Opening of Parliament but HRH Prince Charles, accompanied by his heir, Prince

William and the Duchess of Cornwall added pomp and dignity to the ceremony. We wish the Queen well as she approaches her Platinum Jubilee. I will be in the Ribble Valley for the four-day Bank Holiday and I’m looking forward to celebrating with my constituents. I met some stars of the future and I have great confidence in what they will be bringing to the table in progressing our nation. Apprentices from BAE Systems are specialising in all disciplines and it is their skills which will take our country forward. They are the talents who will be advancing new technologies and taking them to stages we never thought possible. As we have seen from the appalling actions of Putin’s Russia, the defence industry is as relevant in 2022 as it has ever been. Also this month, I visited Balderstone St Leonards School to chat to pupils and teachers. What a happy school, and it was such a delight to see so many smiling people. The youngsters were smart, charming and so polite but at the same time they showed confidence when asking questions about my job. The pupils had me baking garlic bread, showed me outside arts projects and took

me to their wild garden with its own brook and told me about the wildlife they had seen there, including a deer. They also all went into the school yard to receive the Commonwealth Games baton from another school. The Balderstone pupils were to take it onto its next stage accompanied by two pupils on horses and other pupils with banners. I drove away from the school thinking how brilliant it was and how lucky we are that this is our next generation. I had the privilege of meeting one of the last four surviving Apollomission moonwalkers, Charlie Duke and also Jared Issacman, a 39-year-old-entrepreneur who has his own space mission. Jared is worth a couple of billion dollars and is investing in all our futures. His next mission is in November and I cheekily suggested that if one of the astronauts drops out he might think of me, ‘Parliamentary timetable allowing!’ There are many uncertainties about the future, but meeting all of these people I have nothing other than complete confidence that we are in safe hands. n

ith ‘bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying’, the 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment supported by the British Army Band Catterick will march through Clitheroe centre on Tuesday, 24th May to mark the start of the Jubilee celebrations. The Queen awarded the Freedom of the Borough to the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment in 2011. The honour dates from Roman times when troops were not allowed to enter a town or city bearing arms without the express permission of the authorities. These days, it is a ceremonial honour showing the ties between a borough and a particular regiment.

Gallagher debuted the new LG2SPZL shoe – a take on the iconic Barrington Smash – on stage at the concert at King George’s Hall, which is celebrating its centenary year. The adidas Spezial range was founded and curated by lifelong three-stripes fan Gary Aspden from Darwen. The pair, who are good friends, have worked together on a number of projects over the past two decades, including the launch of their first collaborative shoe – the LG SPZL – in 2019.

From Waddington the route is flat for a leisurely ride back into Clitheroe. n

EDUCATIONN E W S PAINTING THE TOWN CLARET Two giants of Burnley have been celebrating their successful partnership after creating a day to remember for fans at Turf Moor. The College Clarets takeover saw a whole host of exciting activities staged by students and staff from Burnley College as they beat Wolves 1-0. There were interactive activities throughout the day and every corner of the stadium was awash with College Clarets scarves and activities showing off the very best that the college has to offer, from creative projects to breathtaking performances. Fans could pitch their gaming skills against the college’s highly-skilled Esports Academy team, which is already partnered with the official Burnley FC Esports team. Karen Buchanan, Principal of Burnley College, said it was an amazing day, showcasing the power of collaboration between the college and football club: “The iconic stage of Turf Moor was the perfect location – what an incredible day!”

FOOTBALL DEAL Burnley College Sixth Form Centre has signed an exciting deal with youth football club Clitheroe Wolves in what is being described as a massive boost for the community in the Ribble Valley. The three-year agreement will see the club’s coaching team and players proudly display the college’s name on new clothing and training equipment. The players will also have the opportunity to take part in strength and conditioning training at Fitness Evolution’s new Evolution Performance Centre, Burnley College’s award-winning on-site gym and fitness centre. Clitheroe Wolves FC has more than 60 teams of players, ranging from the Under-sevens to Under-18s. Ross Hibbert, Chairman of Clitheroe Wolves, says there’s so much support for the club within the community: “We’ve always had the support of our players’ parents and we’re always grateful for that. But to be able to work hand in hand with Burnley College is amazing. We now have more than 1,000 players and more than 60 teams so, to sign up with a professional and respected institution such as Burnley College is a massive boost.

PSYCHOLOGY CAREERS Eight psychology students from Burnley College University courses have secured themselves work in careers they love after impressing employers on scheduled field trips. Seven students have gained positions in a combination of full-time and part-time roles at Kemple View – a high dependency rehabilitation unit which aims to ‘maximise an individual’s opportunity for recovery and to lead a more independent life back in the community.’ An eighth student has secured themselves valuable experience in their chosen career working with adults diagnosed with autism. The learners are all in their third year reading a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counselling. Lecturer Ahad Warsi says he’s proud of all of them: “What is so special about this group of undergraduates is just how motivated they are. Their level of skills and ability are easily matched by their passion for the subject and their desire to get inside the industry and start making a real difference.”

OLYMPIC SPEAKER Olympic medallist Marilyn Okoro was the guest speaker at Westholme’s Sports Awards held at Ewood Park. Marilyn spoke of her love of sport as a child and explained how running had helped her holistic development. To dream ‘audaciously big’ was one of the many pearls of wisdom that Marilyn imparted to the 320 guests in attendance. Marilyn presented a number of awards during the evening including over 40 Sporting Excellence trophies for those competing at regional and/or national level in their respective sport.

MUSICAL EVENING Westholme welcomed everyone to their annual Spring Concert, held at the Croston Theatre. Students from all years at Senior School were represented, including the Junior and Senior Choir, Chamber Choirs, Junior and Senior Orchestras, Swing Band and Brass Band, to name but a few of the wonderfully talented musicians. The joy of spring was delivered through beautiful harmonies and lively performances and with a programme that ranged from classical to the movies – there was certainly something for everyone.

JUDY MURRAY OBE TAKES CENTRE COURT Leading Catholic boarding school, Stonyhurst, and its pupils were honoured to welcome Judy Murray OBE for a Q&A evening recently. The following day pupils had the privilege of attending a tennis coaching masterclass by the Scottish coach as part of their elite tennis programme. The mum of Wimbledon champions Andy and Jamie, Judy was invited to the school by Stonyhurst’s Director of Tennis, David Shaw, who Judy first met in 1995 when they both completed their final tennis coaching qualifications. Pupils had the opportunity to ask Judy questions about her career in tennis and coaching, her life in tennis and her work to promote more women to get involved in

the sport. Judy, who is set to return to the school in the future, commented: “The children that I have met here have been absolutely exemplary, they’re so incredibly curious, they’re polite and they’re looking to learn.’’ Stonyhurst, which was recently named Lawn Tennis Association’s Lancashire Tennis School of the Year for the second consecutive year, boasts a successful Tennis Academy which has seen increasing success under the directorship of former professional David Shaw and his team of coaches who have developed a cohort of national and regional players within the school. SUPPORT FOR YOUNG UKRAINIANS Rossall School forges ahead in terms of supporting young Ukrainians caught up in the current humanitarian crisis

ossall School has responded decisively and quickly to welcome at least six additional Ukrainian children to the school at the start of the summer term and this is one aspect of an extensive programme of support that includes a community hub. This enormous commitment is only possible due to the extraordinary generosity of a school community that has come together to actively respond to those in need. Current pupils are raising money to support relief operations in Ukraine itself whilst the wider Rossallian community has contributed to a fund established to support a small number of Ukrainian children for as long as is needed. The school has gone one step further by sponsoring a family from Kharkiv. Yuliia and her two sons Oleg, eight, and Volodymor, three, arrived at Manchester Airport recently where they were greeted by members of the school community, who have spent the last few days restoring a three-bedroomed property on the school site. Yuliia and her children have experienced

an incredibly difficult journey to get to the UK. Their ‘letters of permission’ took a little while to process, they then travelled to Ireland to stay with the Headmaster’s sister-in-law Caroline Dennehy, and her husband Tom, in County Cork. Within 24 hours of arriving, Tom was teaching the boys how to hold a hurley stick! They are among the very first families to arrive in the UK under the ‘Home for Ukraine’ scheme. In scenes reminiscent of TV’s DIY SOS

everyone pitched in to paint windows and plant the garden of the family’s new house. Others have donated toys, clothes and other household essentials. The school has been inundated with offers from suppliers, tradespeople and kind members of the public. Once Oleg and Volodymyr have settled into their new home, they will join Rossall Prep School and Nursery where they will receive one-to-one support as they begin to learn English. Other Ukrainian children will be welcomed into the school’s senior boarding community at the start of the summer term. They include children who contacted the school with requests for support and younger siblings or friends of Ukrainians who had previously attended the school. Headmaster Jeremy Quatermain, commented: “It is a privilege to lead a community that responds so compassionately to a crisis such as this.

“We have all pulled together to make this happen and, from our initial phone call with Yuliia, we knew that we had to do everything within our power to help her and the boys. “We are so fortunate to be able to help and I am so happy to be surrounded by colleagues, parents and pupils who all share our absolute determination to do something practical in response to the terrible and heart-breaking images that have flooded our screens in recent days. “We know that what we can accomplish is relatively modest in the grand scheme of things but amidst such tragedy, we hope that the Ukrainians we welcome into our community will feel Rossall’s love, kindness and compassion.” n

Tom, who has raced vintage cars since he was a youngster, worked for a local car dealer in his 20s, but spent his spare time racing on famous circuits in the UK and Europe in his 1929 Austin 7. He left school with no qualifications due to dyslexia, but poured his energy into racing, meeting many influential enthusiasts who became friends and encouraged him to work for himself in the historic car business. In 2010 he made that leap of faith – fast forward 12 years and he has become one of the best kept secrets in the Ribble Valley, but with a generous, international following. Tom is still racing and now his Foxfields base, just outside Hurst Green, is bursting with iconic cars including a Bentley, Alvis, Aston Martin and Frazer Nash.

“It became a really fast car – in 2006 I did the hill in 48 seconds – anything under 50 for a 750cc Austin 7 is very quick.” While Tom’s racing continues, it’s not all been plain sailing. In 2007 at Cadwell Park, he suffered brake failure and the Austin rolled. The crash broke his shoulder and collar bone – and injured his right knee so badly that surgeons considered amputation.

“I was determined to do the Prescott Hill Climb – but I didn’t have time to make a body, so I built one out of hardboard at the event. It was a sight. It was christened the B&Q special!

He recovered, and met his wife Helen in 2008. They rebuilt the Austin together but decided to sell it and find something bigger for Tom to use. Last year Tom did Prescott in 44.2 sec in a 1.5 litre 1937 single seater MG Bellevue with Brooklands history. His decision to set up in business followed a deal brokered by Tom between two friends for a Bugatti. “I brought them together and it sold – my commission cheque was a surprise” says Tom. “It paid for the wedding.”

“That deal really sowed the seeds that Tom could do this,” recalls Helen. Having raced historic cars for so long, Tom had many contacts, so finding cars to sell was the easy part. Finding premises to showcase them proved more difficult. “Cars came from friends of friends. I owe much to those who supported me with advice but also helping me buy stock in the early days,” says Tom. “We know life is better together – and this value underpins our business. We love to support other businesses, near and far,” adds Tom, who eventually found a home for his automobiles in an old barn owned by a family friend. “Early on I sold a WO Bentley to a retail psychologist from the Czech Republic. While chatting, he taught me something important. We were talking about the barn and he said, ‘Make it homely and people will feel relaxed. That’s when they buy. Simple as that.”

I KNOW FROM MY OWN LIFE IT’S MORE OF AN INVESTMENT IN YOURSELF AND THE ENJOYMENT YOU GET OUT OF IT Today the barn is a far cry from the place it once was. Not only does it showcase around 18 stunning historic cars from 1905 through to the 1960s, it also features a farmhouse kitchen with sofas and wood burning stove. It’s a place where customers enjoy fresh coffee or lunch while discussing the cars they love. Helen explains: “We serve homemade soup and have a good chat. Tom doesn’t like the term ‘dealer’ – he’s a facilitator really. If people aren’t going to buy a car that day,

it’s no problem. It’s about getting to know each other and the cars, which all have a story behind them, and it’s about finding the next chapter. “Both the cars and people have fascinating stories behind them – that’s what it’s all about.” While Tom and Helen have a burgeoning business and growing family, they are passionate about cars being central to both: “I never advise buying a car just as a financial investment – I know from my own life it’s more of an investment in yourself and the enjoyment you get out of it,” says Tom. “It’s also an investment in family too,” adds Helen. “It’s an interest that kids and parents can enjoy together. The cars have energy

and children love the power, the vibration, the smells – it’s sensory and hands-on. These cars create lasting memories – we love to see young people engaged and involved. In the digital world, analogue is increasingly a great attraction to young and old alike. n

e live in a demanding and often unforgiving world. A lot of what we do, say, wear, watch, eat, visit (you get the drift) is analysed and critiqued to the nth degree. A world – dominated by social platforms – in which it takes a nanosecond for something to go viral (popular in old money) or slip into the abyss never to be seen or heard of again. So, just imagine the anticipation among the Bowker sales team when a new BMW model is announced. And the model under scrutiny here, the new 2 Series Coupé, is every bit deserving of the world-famous badge. Since its launch in March, industry reaction has been better than good and it’s easy to see why.

The 220i (four cylinder) option I took for a spin is a very desirable motor indeed – a coupé that will appeal to traditionalists and modernists alike. A treat for the senses in that it looks smart and sounds wonderful, it’s compact yet plenty roomy enough and nippy. No, not nippy, quick (0-62mph in 7.2 seconds with the very powerful, six-cylinder M240i xDrive managing it in 4.3 seconds).

IT’S GOT PUNCH AND FINESSE IN EQUAL MEASURES, PROVIDING AN EXHILARATING EXPERIENCE SUPPORTED BY SOUND PRACTICALITY But don’t worry that trips to the filling station will become more frequent as a consequence. The fuel economy is pretty impressive too with petrol engines delivering up to 44.1 mpg and diesel up to 60.1 mpg. Especially economical given the high level of performance on offer. specialist reviewer christened it ‘a little tearaway’ – it would be incorrect to call the BMW 2 Series Coupé an out-and-out sports car, but it is in every sense a sporting car. It’s got punch and finesse in equal measures, providing an exhilarating experience supported by sound practicality. Scores well on safety too with Euro NCAP, the European authority that tests the safety performance of cars, giving it a four-star rating.

It was interesting to hear the view of Domagoj Dukec, the Head of BMW Design: “For me, the BMW 2 Series Coupé is the embodiment of classic BMW driving pleasure: compact, BMW typical proportions and a wide stance on the street at first glance. Driving the new BMW 2 Series Coupé is a lot of fun.” A simple assessment. helping others to achieve their maximum potential in both sport and education. According to his daughter Barbara, now Head of Sport at BBC TV, they were a poor, working class family and he had to walk a mile to school and back, often in clogs because there was no money for shoes. His mother worked in the mill and he had to leave school at the statutory minimum age of 15, because the family needed extra income. Consequently, he started to work at the Williams Deacon’s Bank in Blackpool, his chances of improving his education seemingly minimal. He attracted the attention of Blackpool FC in 1944, making his first team debut in 1949 as an amateur. Fortunately, the post-war government wanted to encourage young people back into education and he enrolled as a student at Carnegie College, the renowned PE teaching facility in Leeds.

ONE OF OURS Clitheroe-born Bill Slater was the last amateur footballer to play in an FA Cup final. He went on to be selected for England more than 20 times and also captained Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1960 FA Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers, writes Michael J Hodkinson

ack in the 1930s, entrance to a grammar school was either by passing a scholarship examination or by fee paying, with a number at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School from moneyed families. One such boy, definitely from the first category, was William J Slater, who enrolled at the school at the age of 11 in 1938.

Born in Clitheroe, he lived down the road in Waddington. He was academically bright and outstanding athletically, captaining the school cricket team and gaining selection to the 1st XI football team alongside boys who were up to three years older than himself. He also gained the Headmaster’s Prize for Public Spirited Service, a sure sign that later down the line, he would spend time

BILL WAS A MAN OF MULTIPLE TALENTS, INTEGRITY, WISDOM AND STYLE His opportunities to play regularly for the seaside club were extremely limited, but in 1951, Allan Brown broke his leg and Bill Slater was thrust into the starting 11 at Wembley. He was the last amateur player to take part in an FA Cup final. Alongside him were legends of the game, Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen. They were paid but for young Bill, nothing except the honour of playing in the game that Newcastle United won 2-0. By this stage he had been selected 20 times for

England at amateur level and was an Olympian, representing Great Britain at the 1952 Helsinki Games. He was then appointed to a PE teaching post at Birmingham University and he made an appointment to see Stan Cullis, the famed manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers – then England’s foremost club. “Just give me a game please, I’m not bothered about the level, I just need to play,” was the gist of his request. Cullis, never slow to look a gift horse in the mouth, immediately signed him as an amateur. The occasional international cap followed and he was first choice in the formidable Wolves half back line. He was now married to Marion with the first of their four children on the way. He worked full time, squeezing training into any spare moment and if he could be suitably persuasive, his employer would give him an afternoon off occasionally to enable him to make it to away midweek games. For a game at Sheffield United, Cullis arranged him a lift but it turned up at the wrong address so he hitch hiked to Sheffield. Another time he was in danger of being late for a match. However the bus driver recognised him, taking short cuts to enable him to arrive on time. He was an international footballer, playing in the world’s strongest league and his only football remuneration was a free turkey at Christmas.

HE WAS RECALLED TO THE ENGLAND TEAM FOR THE 1958 WORLD CUP IN SWEDEN, HELPING TO SUBDUE THE LEGENDARY PELÉ AS ENGLAND DREW 0-0 WITH BRAZIL He was recalled to the England team for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, helping to subdue the legendary Pelé as England drew 0-0 with Brazil. Now part-time professional, he captained Wolves in the

1960 FA Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers. There, to the chagrin of many around here, the Clitheroe boy held the cup after a humiliating 90 minutes for the Blues. The same season, he was voted Footballer of the Year before retiring in 1963. He then showed his academic prowess, rising to the post of Director of PE at both Liverpool and Birmingham Universities. His daughter Barbara represented Great Britain as a gymnast in the Montreal Olympics of 1976. Meanwhile, because her father had coached her, he became so totally immersed in the organisation of the sport nationally that he was elected to the post of President of the British Gymnastics Association, holding the position for 10 years. He was awarded the OBE for his Services to Sport in 1982 and a CBE in 1998. In 2018, on his death at the age of 91, the Gymnastics Association said: “Bill was a man of multiple talents, integrity, wisdom and style.” Part of the Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Museum is dedicated to him in a city where he is remembered with great fondness. And those of us from the Ribble Valley need to know about one of our own, who set such high standards of decency, humility and supreme sportsmanship coupled with service to so many others. n

BOWLAND IS BUZZING Inspired by the wildlife and moorlands of Bowland, the cask beers crafted by artisans in the heart of Clitheroe, are world-renowned

e all know that we live in a little part of England that is well known for its stunning rural location – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) featuring 300 square miles of wild, upland landscape. However, lovers of craft beer have come to know the Ribble Valley AONB in a different context – a place where Ales of Outstanding Natural Beauty are lovingly crafted and nurtured by Andrew Warburton,

who has been at the helm of Bowland Brewery for the past eight years. With ‘outstanding’ being a key word at the micro-brewery, Drew and his small team are passionate about the ingredients and traditional methods used in producing their award-winning cask ales. Bowland’s Pheasant Plucker, which features British hops, will represent the North West at London’s Olympia next year after winning a gold award in CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain 2022 – a huge accolade for a small brewery that started life in a tiny milking parlour at Bashall Barn on the edge of the Forest of Bowland. The brewery, which was then a one-man band, was already supplying the Emporium in Clitheroe and the Lower Buck in Waddington, which Drew was running at the time: “We knew the owner and the

brewery was his baby – so when it became available we knew we had to have it. “At the time micro-breweries were unheard of – Bowland Brewery was a real one-off and when we got it, it was a steep learning curve. Once we had acquired the brewery, we needed to find a bigger home for it,” recalls Drew, whose brother James has the James’ Places group of country inns, bars and restaurants. “James said to me, ‘I’ve found the perfect place for the brewery’. I think Holmes Mill had already been signed on the dotted line by then and when he took me there to show me what he had in mind I really thought he had lost the plot – it was enormous!” Initially the brewery was housed temporarily in what is now the Food Hall at Holmes Mill: “We had to have all the kit made to measure,” explains Drew.

The ‘kit’ included huge 30-barrel brushed stainless steel hot and cold liquor (water) tanks, a mash tun (that turns the liquor to ‘wort’) and eight fermentation tanks. “It was very much a case of learning on the job but I was lucky to inherit Scott and the small team, so I learnt everything from them.” Today Bowland beer is brewed beneath the iconic chimney at Holmes Mill, behind the Beer Hall which features one of the longest bars in the country. Visitors to the Beer Hall can see the dedicated team of artisans crafting the cask beers and the gleaming fermentation tanks – each named after famous Bowland fells including Parlick, Easington and Fellsnape. Bowland Brewey has a stable of core beers, introduces seasonal beers throughout the year and occasional ‘one-offs’ – which will include a Jubilee edition this summer. Quirkily named and branded, the core line-up has a recent new addition following fantastic feedback from buyers and customers – Bowland Bumble – a 4% ABV blonde, lightly-hopped ale that started out as one of Bowland Brewery’s seasonal ales back in 2018. Having been recently introduced to a bee-keeping couple from Rimington, Bowland

Brewery now has its own beehive just six miles from Holmes Mill, that will produce the honey that goes into brewing Bumble. “We have always used locally sourced honey to create Bowland Bumble Honey Beer but we felt that it was a great way for us to support the bee population by having our own hive.

The flavours come back with the bee and eventually make their way into the honey, creating a unique flavour profile for our beer. “We have always been inspired by this area of Bowland when creating our beers and we are passionate about supporting

this stunning landscape, so introducing our own beehives is a natural choice. It really fits with our story.” Bowland Bumble now sits alongside award-winning Pheasant Plucker and other core beers that include Bowland’s flagship Hen Harrier, Boxer Blonde, Bowland Gold, Buster IPA and Deer Stalker – each having been inspired by the wildlife of Bowland, yet each having their own distinctive identity. Artists Clare Brownlow and Sophie Jordan have both helped captivate the wildlife in their unique styles to develop recognisable branding within the core range. When Andrew started out on his Bowland Brewery journey little did he know it would lead him to producing world-class cask ales that are widely recognised and sought-after: “We are very lucky to be in such a fabulous location. The latest addition is a fantastic pizza oven resulting in a more casual offering of great pizza, served quickly but with no compromise. Can you imagine a cold beer or a glass of rosé with a slice of wood-fired

pizza? A great way to wind down any evening after work or perhaps a lazy weekend afternoon with family and friends. They’ve also recently trialled a burger van – as you can imagine it was a huge hit and I’m told a selection of ‘dirty burgers’ will soon be on the main menu and available both outside and in. The vibe at the Black Bull is second to none and we know this isn’t a fluke or left to chance. Becky and her super team are there to enhance the experience – enthusiastic, passionate and attentive and with over 100 covers outside, it’s quite an atmosphere and welcoming to all.

Just to be clear it’s not just pizza and burgers outside – good as they are, the full a la carte menu is also available for those who love the al fresco way of life. Let’s also not forget the signature Sunday lunch, which is superb and incredibly popular. As the evening descends and dappled light follows, the garden comes into its own. By day the views across the Ribble Valley are magnificent and as dusk falls, twinkling lights, live music and a selection of hand-crafted cocktails make the outside space come alive with a laid-back

atmosphere. It’s hard to imagine anywhere nicer to relax, kick back and enjoy great food and a tipple of your choice. The Black Bull remains open seven days a week, testimony to the fact that Becky wants to offer a full menu to a host of different clientele. WINNING FORMULA Holmes Mill in Clitheroe is a firm favourite for both locals and visitors, it really has something for everyone, writes Liz Walmsley

or some, it’s the Bowland Beer Hall with its amazing bar (famed for being one of the longest bars in Britain) with 42 hand pulls and a minimum of 24 individual cask beers at any one time. For others, it’s the fabulous Food Hall with its amazing selection of fine food and drink from Bowland, Lancashire and further afield, all brought together under one roof. For me, it’s the Bistro Bar & Grill. Admittedly, it’s been a while since I last

visited but co-incidentally it was with the same friend I visited with this time around. In many ways not much had changed, the same warm welcome on arrival and lots of room to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail in, comfy leather sofas and a huge bar – why change a winning formula? If you’ve never

visited the bistro, the old mill has been carefully and sympathetically renovated to create a large bar and dining area from the original industrial structure but with

There was also a great choice of mocktails for the abstemious amongst us but having seen the menu and the wine list, I decided to save myself for a glass of wine for the main event. Praise should be given to Roxanna, who with the patience of a saint, managed to get our order at the third attempt – primarily as we were catching up on the last six months and secondly, we were a bit blown away by the choice. We decided to skip the nibbles and go straight to the starters. For Trina, the pork and lobster wantons (which would also have been my first choice) but on the basis that she agreed to share, I went for a simple heritage tomato salad with smoked goats curd and crispy croutons. Both were delicious.

As a rule, I’d never normally have three courses, but the cardamon crème brulee was a must for me and I’m glad I made an exception to the rule, it was silky smooth

Quality food in beautiful surroundings at little more than pub food prices, makes the Bistro Bar & Grill one to add to your list. Also worth mentioning is the wine list, reasonably priced with a selection of wines by the glass, and judging by the steady stream of customers while we were there, it seems that the Bistro Bar & Grill wasn’t just a hit with us. My only regret? Leaving it so long between visits. n

It has long been a haven for walkers and those passing through on the canal but now attracts more customers, both local and from further afield, to enjoy the fabulous food (recently highly rated by the Food Standards Agency) and wonderful ambience created both inside and out: “The Anchor Inn has such a rich history,” Lee adds. “It used to be called The Travellers Rest and is famous for the spectacular display of stalagmites and stalactites that have formed over the centuries in the cellar vaults.”

itting idyllically by the LeedsLiverpool canal in Salterforth, The Anchor Inn has been at the centre of the community for many years and with a roaring log fire, real ales, great gins and fabulous food it is easy to see why. Having been taken over by Lee Hughes just prior to lockdown it was a quick turnaround to assemble a huge tepee to allow outside socialising and dining, and this continues to be the perfect outside space: “The tepee at The Anchor Inn is stunning,” says Lee. “It’s ideal for country dining and the perfect spot for lazy afternoons or an evening of alfresco cocktails.” The tepee has been a fantastic addition to The Anchor Inn and can also be hired for team meetings, business lunches (a projector and screen are available) or for family get togethers and special occasions. The pub dates back to 1655 and was rebuilt in 1795 when the Leeds-Liverpool

At the height of the pandemic Lee and his team were keen to support the community. They delivered over 200 children’s free packed lunches in the first week when schools were re-opening, as it was very obviously an anxious time for many: “Being supportive to local families was important to us. We have a strong ethos of putting the health and wellbeing of our staff at the heart of our business,” Lee says. “This extends to our customers and to the local community.” Like its partner pub The White Bull at Gisburn, a ‘Bottomless Brunch’ and fabulous afternoon teas will be on offer during the Jubilee Bank Holiday. The Three Fishes at Mitton unveils plans for a three-day extravaganza to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 2nd to 4th June

he Three Fishes is set to launch outdoor dining on the pub’s elegant terrace for a three-day Jubilee celebration featuring menus designed to reflect the country’s royal heritage. As the celebrations get underway, there can be no better host than chef Nigel Haworth, who has an impressive series of prestigious royal connections. He has cooked for the Queen, enjoyed dinner at Highgrove with Prince Charles and Camilla and had lunch with the Duke of Edinburgh at the Ritz. He has been invited to many royal garden parties and is a winner of the Prince Philip Medal – the late Prince’s highest accolade, which was bestowed for Nigel’s lifelong commitment to the food industry.

Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th June, will see Nigel and his dedicated team running a special regal, seasonal menu for diners inside the pub as well as firing up the Charcoa grill for those wishing to dine on the terrace. There’s going to be plenty of cocktails, perfectly paired wines and chilled beers to make the Jubilee Bank Holiday one that you’ll always remember.

rom its leafy, country-lane frontage, Ye Horns Inn appears to be a delightfully, traditional English country pub. But take a further look and to the rear, the inn has been beautifully extended with an outdoor terrace, a glass and timber orangery-style bar and casual dining area that leads to a stunning main dining room, The Barn, with its high ceiling, contemporary pendant lighting and huge stone fireplace.

At Ye Horns Inn, diners have the best of both worlds. If you prefer a country pub atmosphere you will find it in the beautifully refurbished original bar where there are smaller, intimate rooms where locals can enjoy a get together over a beer and bar snacks – a tasty Scotch egg perhaps or mac and cheese croquettes with chive mayo – simply delicious! At the helm of Ye Horns Inn is chef patron Sean Wrest. With his impeccable career credentials, Sean is renowned for his contemporary take on what are essentially great classics, using Michelin-star techniques

to produce modern British food that is ultimately delicious. Take Ye Horns’ halibut tempura – which is made super-light using an espuma gun to aerate the batter. The fish is served with triple cooked chips and a delightfully delicate pea puree – elevating a classic dish into the realms of the sublime.

Wenslydale and went on to complete an internship at the Fat Duck at Bray, Heston Blumenthal’s three-Michelin star restaurant. After moving back north he worked at Yorebridge House in the Dales, before a move to the chic, fine-dining Maaemo, Oslo.

Following time working as sous chef at Tommy Banks’ Michelin-starred restaurant The Black Swan, he went on to become head chef at Banks’ York restaurant, Roots, which went on to be awarded a Michelin-star. With locality and seasonality at its heart, the menu at Ye Horns Inn has been crafted by Sean and head chef Tony Bee, who trained under Gordon Ramsey. “We have some great local producers on our doorstep,” says Sean. “It’s a really exciting time for us at Ye Horns Inn.” n

think quality and value have never been more important than right now. I know customers recognise the challenges that hospitality faces and understand that price increases are inevitable. It would be very easy to cut corners, whether that’s on portion sizes, cheaper cuts of meat or inferior ingredients but the team at the Freemasons are very proud to say that this certainly doesn’t apply to them. More than ever, they recognise that the whole experience has got to be spot-on. Steve Smith often refers to the set lunch and early supper menu as one of the best value meals in the Ribble Valley and I for one can testify to that. Quite often a 3-3-3 menu can be disappointing and offer limited choice, but the current menu suggests I could have eaten any one of the choices of all three courses. Whilst we waited for our starters, we were tempted with morsels of salmon and the most incredibly delicious, spiced broth and, of course, the signature bread and butter.

For some, a meal in itself, but a great way to start a leisurely lunch. In the end I chose a perfectly balanced ragu which was deep, rich and flavoursome with a beetroot rigatoni and finished with a crunch of nuts and aged parmesan. Next up was a perfectly cooked fillet of Whitby cod sitting on a crispy layered base of potatoes and vegetables – I must confess to asking chef for a portion of triple cooked chips to share with my friend, who agreed that this indeed was very special. Pudding choices were both sweet and decadent but also light and the perfect

way to end a very enjoyable lunch. All this for £32.50 per head – surely some mistake? No, a veritable feast that doesn’t feel ridiculous mid-week and one that’s also available Friday and Saturday as an early tea. We know that the Freemasons is however, so much more than the early-bird luncheon and has an array of a la carte dishes which are simply sublime. Using the very best of our local seasonal larder and combining it with a well-researched broader group of world-class ingredients, produces stunning results. Each dish hand-crafted with love and passion for you to enjoy.

To remind you there is always something for everyone at the Freemasons in terms of budget and appetite. Sunday lunch remains a great British tradition and very much so in the Ribble Valley and with service running from noon through to 6pm, the pub is the perfect spot to finish your weekend with family and friends. The menu is packed with succulent roasts and lighter fish options all sitting alongside perfect accompaniments. Starters and puddings look incredible too, varied as well as many alltime classics. Take your time, kick back and enjoy this feast on the day of rest. As we move toward the end of spring and into summer, the Freemasons plays host to a great selection of collaborative evenings. These nights allow the creative juices to flow with Steven and the team entwined with great guest chefs offering a different look and taste to the normal menu. The events are always popular and get booked up well in advance, so it’s best to secure tables early to avoid disappointment, especially for larger parties. here are celebratory events across the whole of the UK in June, and Ribble Valley village Gisburn will be celebrating in style: “The Young Farmers have lots of festivities planned for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over the Bank Holiday weekend,” owner of The White Bull Lee Hughes explains. “To mark the occasion we have organised some special treats for our customers to enjoy at The White Bull too.” Throughout the whole of the weekend customers can enjoy ‘Brunch with Bottomless Bubbles’ between 10am and 12 noon and later in the day a fabulous afternoon tea for only £14.95 – perfect! “We have entertainment at The White Bull all weekend, including the wonderfully talented vocalist Ella Shaw on Thursday 2nd June. Britain’s Got Talent star Ella is a favourite at the inn, and we’re really looking forward to her being here again,” explains Lee. The collective compilation of a new book of walks, featuring rambles from a small Ribble Valley village, has an inspirational story behind it

book of walks, which was created when, across the country people began walking around their local countryside with one permitted person, has sold more than 500 copies thanks to its appealing illustrations and interesting routes. Walks from a Lancashire Village has been collectively compiled by Ruth Buckley and a group of walkers from Grimsargh, for whom walking has proved a vital lifeline. Author Ruth explains: “Walking has proved a lifeline for many of us, myself included, having been bereaved in December 2019. I was asked to compile a book of the walks by my walking buddies, as I like to call them.” With the approval of Grimsargh Parish council the walking group had 200 personalised waymarkers made, then gained permission from Lancashire County Council, local farmers and landowners, to put them up.

It is one year since Nick Smith and Sophie Hart took over Longridge Gallery. As the country emerged from the Covid pandemic, Nick and Sophie returned to their roots in the Ribble Valley. The gallery, based on Berry Lane in Longridge, has now been in family ownership for 22 years. In the 12 months since Nick and Sophie took over, the couple have introduced new talent to the already-strong portfolio of artists represented. Notable successes include John Russell, Dan Pearce, Scott Tetlow, Chuck and Stephen Graham, as well as local star Anthony Platt. “Of course, long-standing gallery favourites
