Live

Magazines Editor You may have guessed that this is the annual men’s issue of Live Ribble Valley magazine. In keeping with the theme, we meet the Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling (RWPC) men’s team featured on our front cover. The RWPC team recently jetted out to Calpe in Spain where they underwent some serious training for the competition season that is now underway. Back in the UK, the team have already enjoyed a number of prestigious wins with their impressive race strategies and new aerodynamic, Ultra SL R edition machines, engineered by Ribble Cycles, whose flagship showroom is just outside Clitheroe. Staying with the need for speed, we talk to Tom Hardman, racer of historic automobiles. Twelve years ago, Tom, whose first vintage car was a 1929 Austin 7, set up a unique business in the heart of the Ribble Valley, where he has a good number of iconic automobiles including a Bentley, Alvis, Aston Martin and Frazer Nash We are introduced to veteran and epic endurance athlete Darren Hardy, a Warrior Games gold medallist and Help for Heroes campaigner. Darren speaks about men’s mental health and talks about his next daredevil challenge - a triathlon in the Arctic circle, which will test him to the limit. Also, in this issue we turn the spotlight on world-class, award-winning cask ales brewed in the heart of Clitheroe at Bowland Brewery. Andrew Warburton is at the helm of this hugely successful microbrewery, which takes inspiration from the wildlife of the Forest of Bowland, creating craft beers such as Pheasant Plucker, which will represent the North West at London’s Olympia next year. We delve into history to trace the steps of Cromwell and his army, which crossed the bridge over the River Hodder back in 1648 and, fast forward to the mid-20th century, we discover a Clitheroe-born footballer, who was selected for England more than 20 times and captained Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1960 FA Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers. But it’s not all about the men in this month’s magazine – rest assured the Queen’s Silver Jubilee will undoubtedly take centre stage here in the Ribble Valley, where there will be many celebrations to mark this historic milestone. Enjoy! Jan Woolley Editor

Ranked number one in the UK, Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling men’s team competes on the world stage and has made a great start to the 2022 season, writes Jan Woolley

A

two-week spring training stint in Calpe, Spain, set up the Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling men’s team to embark on a season that has already seen 15 wins in the UK and Europe. With high hopes for the Tour of Britain in September, the number-one ranked team in the UK are in great shape and their impressive new Ultra SL R edition machines, engineered by Ribble Cycles, are already attracting lots of attention. “It’s Ribble’s flagship performance professional road bike and we have definitely seen a step up – particularly in the flat races,” says team rider Jack Rees. “It really attracts attention with its handlebars, engineering, aerodynamics and colours that work with the kit. The Ultra SL R is a significant part of Ribble’s reputation for innovation, and we are

GLOBAL SUCCESS seeing marginal gains across all areas. As a team we optimise all areas of performance from our bikes to our race strategy.” The pre-season training saw the team fly to Alicante to escape the cold British weather in February: “Calpe is brilliant – it’s a mecca for cyclists. It was great for us from a training perspective as a team, being all together. “We invited the nutritionist and our clothing partners – it was very much open house and was a very productive two weeks. It is all about teamwork and working collaboratively,” says Jack, who is the team’s operational director, responsible for competition logistics, organising transport for the bikes, riders and support team. “While there was undoubtedly a lot more barriers last year when travelling, we have managed quite well this year – it’s been easier,” says Jack, who was part of the Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling (RWPC) team that won the Tour Series last year.

The RWPC team is a UCI Continental team that was founded in 2017 to provide a platform for developing riders, allowing them to compete at global level.

AS A TEAM WE OPTIMISE ALL AREAS OF PERFORMANCE FROM OUR BIKES TO OUR RACE STRATEGY Having enjoyed considerable success, the team now competes all over the world in some of the leading cycle races on the calendar. They have riders based across the North of England and the Midlands, with riders also competing across the UK from national championships to local circuit races. Since the team’s inception, the riders have raced in Belgium, France, Poland, Spain, Qatar and Hong Kong – a truly global calendar. Among the races they have competed in so far this season has been the 80k Eddie

Soens Memorial at Aintree, which saw Ribble Weldite’s Cameron Jeffers win: “Cameron is a Lancashire lad and he was the first one to win a race on the new bike,” says Jack, who also competed with the team in the same race. Last month in the Rutland Classic – the UK’s only single-day, international professional men’s cycle road race, contested over a 180k course, saw Ribble Weldtite’s Finn Crockett sprinting down the arrow-straight finishing road to win the race. As a British brand Barrow-based Ribble Cycles, whose flagship showroom is just outside Clitheroe, are proud to be the title partner to the British team, as Jack explains: “We are a British team flying the flag for a British brand. We are very much a progressive group and we have some really strong riders.” Among the Ribble Weldtite 14-strong team are the Tanfield brothers, who were signed by RWPC last year. The Yorkshireborn brothers, Harry and Charlie, are

world class riders who have a background in Olympic and World Tour competition. Before joining the RWPC line-up Harry spent three years competing at World Tour level. An accomplished time trialist and single-day specialist, and having participated in the Vuelta a España, his addition has strengthened the team’s stage racing capabilities. The younger of the brothers, Charlie, competed with Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics and has Commonwealth Gold, World and European Championship medals along with multiple national titles. Having had a great start to the 2022 season, the team continue to train hard and meticulously prepare: “With all competitions preparation is key,” says Jack. “We cover as many areas as we can. Obviously, the bike and equipment is central and we have full time mechanics on board. Nutrition has also been re-evaluated – we are on a really high-volume, carb-fuelling strategy to ensure top level performance.

CAMERON IS A LANCASHIRE LAD AND HE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO WIN A RACE ON THE NEW BIKE “We also put a lot of work in before a race preparing around the weather conditions – that can have a real impact both here in the UK and in Europe. “We are making great strides around the world.” Enjoying their success and keen to encourage young riders, the RWPC team visits schools and colleges throughout the country: “We conduct assemblies and do lots of ‘meets and greets’ at family events to promote the team and the sport.” The team are also involved in a Derbybased academy that enables young riders to progress in the sport and to pursue professional careers in cycling. Jack concludes: “The Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling team have a great following within the community which is fantastic. We really do want to establish a legacy that will help the young riders of the future.” n

A mixture of contemporary and traditional Styles When Dave and Gill embarked on a large-scale renovation of a bungalow near Bury they turned to Kitchen Design Centre and designer Paul Harrington to create their dream space. The kitchen was central to the overall design and the couple wanted it to form the main part of the large open-plan space. Working from architect’s plans, Paul designed a kitchen based on their love of a showroom display. A perfect mix of handle-less contemporary and modern shaker style was combined and a large island became the main element of the design. Paul adapted the design as the architect’s plans changed. Initially, a peninsular was proposed but when Dave and Gill decided to take more space from the garage and increase the size of the kitchen, Paul adapted the design and introduced a large island instead. To ensure continuity, he then mirrored the breakfast bar wood material in the open shelving behind. Symmetry was key in the design so Paul followed this with the Neff ovens and the handle trim illumination in the island creates the ‘wow’ factor. The installation was faultless and Dave and Gill were delighted with everything from their initial contact with Paul and their visit to the showroom right through to the fitters who worked seamlessly with their other contractors. Dave loved the renovation project so much he has the bug to do it all again and he wouldn’t hesitate to use Kitchen Design Centre.

Designer Paul Harrington says, “This was fantastic to work on. I literally had a blank canvas and a superb amount of space. Dave and Gill trusted me with the design and when the space increased it was ideal for a large island. Mixing contemporary and traditional styles works so well. I’m delighted with the finished kitchen.”

Hey Siri mow the lawn! It’s Saturday morning, you’ve had a tough week at work and typically - it’s raining again! Is it any surprise you don’t feel like mowing the lawn? You skipped doing it last week though, so now unfortunately you don’t really have a choice, otherwise it’s going to be a really big job next weekend. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just say “Siri Mow the lawn” then sit back and enjoy another coffee? AutoMowIt are Lancashire’s approved Ambrogio robot mowers distributor - it’s a newly launched business for Tyler Stevenson who owns the Blackburn & West Lancashire Greenthumb lawn care treatment franchises.

Are robot mowers just a fad?

So why did he start AutoMowIt?

I can provide free site assessments to determine suitability and advise on the variety of features across the range, so clients can make an informed choice. Ambrogio robot mowers can be fully automatic, programmed to mow your lawn on a schedule that suits you. Alternatively they can be instructed via the Ambrogio App on your phone from anywhere in the world - even if that’s just your bed!”

“We have a large lawn at home, with a busy business and a young family I just didn’t have the time to mow my lawn as often as I advised my Greenthumb customers. But, I obviously want my own lawn to be in tip top condition. So I started looking at robot mowers. I did my research, checking out product reviews on line and quickly realised Ambrogio were unparalleled. I was extremely impressed with the product range so my mind was made up. My installer had to travel from Lincolnshire so seeing a gap in the market, I decided to qualify as an approved installer and dealership, serving Lancashire.

Ambrogio have been manufacturing for over 25 years. But to the UK market it feels like robot mowers are a bit new, and there’s a lot of uncertainty in consumers minds. The benefits are clear and the technology is always improving, so they are definitely not just a fad! How does someone choose the right mower?

AutoMowIt are happy to offer a free assessment of your lawn, virtual via FaceTime or in person to discuss suitability and features of the various models. Call 0800 1522123.

BEDROOM HEAVEN! Life is stressful, but your bedroom is perfectly placed as the antidote to the toils and tribulations of everyday life

Y

our bedroom is a personal space, a sanctuary where we spend a serious amount of time, and the way it makes us feel has a major effect on our overall wellbeing. A calming bedroom, which encourages sleep and relaxation, starts with a comfortable bed, but there are other key elements that are worthy of consideration. A fitted furniture design offers a significant step towards a dreamy bedroom. Whether your taste is for a contemporary or more classic look, a well-designed bedroom will offer a balanced layout, taking stock of your lifestyle, storage needs, access,

daylight and fixed features such as radiators and power points. Our bedrooms are primarily used for sleeping, and for this reason the bed will be the first priority when planning a new scheme. As well as its aesthetics, it’s key that you can easily walk around your bed and gain access to

doorways, wardrobes and drawers. If the route to storage is hampered, you’re going to find it more tempting to pile your belongings elsewhere, rather than do battle with a wardrobe door that won’t open far enough! The layout of your bedroom can massively impact the level of relaxation you can achieve. A busy and cluttered space is distracting, as well as being a hazard, playing havoc with your brain as it tries to work out a solution for tidying up the mess. Many of us have a limited amount of storage space and a sizeable requirement, so it’s useful to consider exactly what you need to store in your bedroom in the early stages of the design plan.

A fitted design will generally place the furniture around the outside of the bedroom, embracing the contours of the walls to allow space in the centre of the room. It’s ideal for creating a streamlined bedroom, avoiding incongruous, ill-fitting furniture, which could block windows and create underused pockets

of precious space. A savvy bespoke design will maximise all available space, including awkward areas created by architectural features such as beams, chimney breasts and jutting windowsills. If you are particularly limited for square footage, a wall-bed is the ideal space-saving solution. Neatly tucked away behind the

A WELL-DESIGNED BEDROOM WILL OFFER A BALANCED LAYOUT, TAKING STOCK OF YOUR LIFESTYLE veneer of wardrobe doors during the day, a wall-bed is easily pulled down into position at night-time, meaning a streamlined and airier, open space just when you need it. We’re all aware of the concept of colour psychology, so choosing the right colour scheme for your bedroom is important. It’s generally accepted that soothing rich earth and skin tones are supportive colours, which encourage us to relax, creating a cosy, welcoming atmosphere in the bedroom. Feng shui is about creating harmony in your surroundings by better connections with nature, so either a light, refreshing woodgrain or a deeper, textured finish would be ideal for creating a natural, organic feel. There is a multitude of colour options available for designing a fitted bedroom, which will also allow you to pick a finish or paint shade

which blends in with your existing décor. Of course, a quality fitted bedroom will mean furniture built to last and easy to clean and care for. So, fewer worries to keep you awake at night, and a big step towards bedroom heaven! At Hartleys, we are experienced in designing, crafting and fitting both functional and aesthetically pleasing bedrooms of all shapes and sizes. We’d be delighted to play a part in transforming your sleep space into a sanctuary fit for dreams. Our bespoke storage systems will ensure you have space for all your belongings and that clutter is kept to a minimum. JUBILEE COLLECTION To mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II, chairmaker Gabriella James, has created a Special Edition Jubilee Collection

T

he Gabriella James’ Jubilee Collection features the awardwinning Darwin modern Windsor chair and traditional Turner counter stool, with naturally soft seats beautifully upholstered in a traditionally woven Union Flag. For each one sold during 2022, Gabriella James will Plant a Tree for the Jubilee in association with the Queen’s Green Canopy, a charity that has been established for this special occasion. The Turner counter stool is the perfect kitchen companion. Slim enough to tuck

under any counter or in any kitchen corner, the stool is a winning combination of practical comfort and style. The traditional button-shaped seat is handmade from 100 per cent natural stuffing material making it uncompromisingly comfortable to sit on. The stylish solid-wood frame is hand carved with traditionally turned legs in sustainably sourced English ash and finished with a natural wax oil, enhancing the beautifully warm grain. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’. Following the end of the initial planting season in March, tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year. As well as inviting the planting of new trees, the Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service. Felicity Randolph, founder of Gabriella

James Chairmakers says: “It was a pleasure to create this Special Edition Jubilee Collection to commemorate the work and dedication of Her Majesty the Queen for 70 years. As the Darwin is a Windsor chair, it makes perfect sense to include it in our Jubilee Collection.

“Both the Darwin and the Turner stool are handmade from sustainably sourced English ash so we would like to support the Queen’s Green Canopy charity by planting an ash tree for the Jubilee with the sale of every Special Edition Darwin and Turner stool during 2022.” n

A THING OF BEAUTY…

C

reating a home that is attractive, well-proportioned and filled with furniture and accessories that you love is important – but it’s not always easy to achieve. Having completed prestigious projects in Westminster, London, and across the UK, Ribble Valley-based Theofano has also been commissioned to work on some of the North West’s most notable homes and commercial properties – both large and small, contemporary and traditional. Providing a full, turn-key interior design service, Maureen Bentley and her team at Theofano, are renowned for their keen eye for detail and their ability to source beautiful fabrics, wall coverings, furniture and accessories. They also have a professional team of experienced and reliable tradespeople they can call upon too. After an initial consultation and home visit, the team provides digital mood boards that pull together colour palettes, fabrics,

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” This was the advice given by English textile designer William Morris back in the 1800s – today that ethos still stays true textures and room layouts. Relevant fabric swatches and samples are also sourced and sent to clients. “We carry out a full service from start to finish – from arriving at the look that needs to be achieved, to sourcing furniture and fabrics, lighting and flooring, we can do everything,” says Maureen, who has many respected contacts within the industry.

“To achieve a cohesive look that works well together, it’s really important to take the room as a whole and work with it. Taking a piecemeal approach doesn’t work and tends to be a false economy. “It often results in not quite hitting the mark – by letting us do all aspects of the design, results in getting it right and making an impact. By pulling everything together and working as a team, we surpass clients’ expectations. “We have craftsmen and curtain-makers, lighting experts and flooring people – all of whom are experts in their own field. Once

we have a look that a client wants to achieve, we can deliver it totally – right down to dressing the room with suitable accessories.” With many years in business, Theofano is able to source stunning wall coverings and fabrics from some of the UK’s leading industry designers including Zinc, Lewis and Wood and, coming soon, Zimmer and Rohde. First class floor coverings from Jacaranda are a firm favourite with clients as well as unique rugs and luxury accessories sourced from all over Europe. As well as working on new-builds of varying sizes, rural cottages and imposing country houses, Theofano has also carried out contract work on small luxury hotels. So, if you have an interiors project that needs professional input in order to achieve the desired result, contact Maureen and the team at Theofano. With their design skills, contacts and ability to source exactly what you need, your home will indeed, have nothing in it that is not deemed to be beautiful! n

SHOWCASING

BEAUTIFUL DESIGN Established over 35 years ago, Kitchen Design Centre continues to lead the way in kitchen design and remains the largest independent kitchen company in the North West. The Barrowford showroom has recently introduced brand new, elegant kitchen and living space displays

W

hen Kitchen Design Centre opened its Barrowford showroom four years ago it represented a significant investment for this renowned company that continues to evolve to remain at the forefront of the kitchen design industry. KDC is always responding to changes to the way we live – and the Barrowford showroom reflects this in the beautiful displays of traditional and contemporary kitchens in room sets that reflect our different ways of life. The experienced team at KDC Barrowford are delighted to announce a number of new

displays to the showroom and to introduce the new Hacker Concept130 collection. Newly launched for 2022, Concept130 reinterprets the kitchen as a living space. Individual, tailor-made requirements and special ideas can be implemented with millimetre precision in a way that has never been seen before. The revolutionary product not only looks ergonomically

sophisticated but creates significantly more storage space too. The Concept130 new display at Barrowford sees soft matt black units combined with grey marble effect units and worktop,

homesinsideout Adapting to the way we now use our kitchens and to accommodate the shift in home working, this fantastic display incorporates a home working desk area. The showroom has always featured the very latest appliances and the new display also features the brand-new Neff Glass Draft Cooker Hood – one of the latest innovations from this world-class manufacturer. There is also a new pantry display which showcases the current trend for kitchens to feature attractive storage options and the ability to hide small appliances away.

“Initial response to the new Hacker Concept130 has been incredible,” says Simon. “The collection really complements our other displays that are showcased in our beautiful Barrowford showroom. “We have contemporary and traditional kitchens to give customers a wide choice and the displays have been designed to really reflect what KDC designers can do for our clients.” When KDC set up their new showroom in Barrowford it not only complemented the KDC showrooms across the North West, but was a perfect fit for the other businesses on the attractive high street, known for its high-end independent shops and services. The team are proud of their relationships with such businesses and work well with local estate agents, developers and architects.

THE TEAM AT BARROWFORD HAVE CREATED A NEW PANTRY WHICH NOT ONLY PROVIDES A PLACE FOR FOOD STORAGE BUT ENABLES APPLIANCES TO BE HIDDEN AWAY

Visit the Barrowford showroom and meet the team – designer Suzanne Ryan who has an amazing flair for colours and textures, showroom manager Simon Thomas, who has the technical and design skills to inspire and Abi, who brings a new zest and trendy inspiration to this amazing line-up. Together the design team has amalgamated over 46 years’ experience.

33

The showroom itself is one of the most sophisticated in the area – one of the largest too and features multiple displays. Customers often cite the showroom as a reason for choosing KDC as they are able to gain inspiration from the many displays on show. While we all use our kitchens differently, we all want an attractive living space that works for our lifestyle – whether that’s family-centric, a place to entertain or an intimate dining area, KDC’s in-house, award-winning designers are experts at making your dream a reality.

Each designer has a wealth of experience in creating contemporary and traditional kitchens with a modern twist. Having been in business for more than 35 years, KDC’s name is synonymous with quality well-built kitchens. SIMPLE VEG FOR SUMMER

P

lant growth is steaming ahead with seeds germinating, plants and shrubs bursting into flower and annual weeds popping up. It’s also a time to think about introducing some edible plants into your garden and there are plenty of easy ways to enjoy fullflavoured crops, even when space is tight. For novice gardeners, focus on herbs. It doesn’t take long to grow herbs from seed, and if you get sowing now then you will have them to enjoy throughout the summer. Parsley, coriander and dill can

all be sown direct in the soil this month and you will be able to harvest them from July onwards. Basil is best sown indoors in pots, but again you will be able to take your pick of its leaves from July. If you have a semi-shaded spot in your garden you could try growing a selection of cut-and-come-again salad leaves. Not only delicious to eat, they will save you having

to buy bags of salad from the supermarket – which means you will also be cutting down on plastic packaging. If you are going to grow them in a container pick one that is approximately 30cm wide or larger. Try mizuna loose-leaved lettuce, rocket or endive. You can also sow pak choi, Swiss chard and beetroot to harvest their colourful, tasty leaves. Once the salad leaves are 10cm tall – which will be in about three to four weeks – snip them off with scissors to just above ground level and they will re-sprout for a second or third time. If you give them some liquid plant food after each harvest they will re-grow more rapidly. Dwarf French beans is the veg that keeps on giving during the summer months. As long as you pick them as soon as they are ready they will keep on cropping all summer long. They need good fertile soil, so make sure you dig in some compost, and climbing varieties need canes for support.Young plants can be planted out at the end of May or you can sow seeds now directly into the soil where you want them to grow, at 20cm intervals. Water

the soil when it gets dry and if you sow a second batch next month you can alternate picking beans between the two all summer.

FOR A TOUCH OF COLOUR TRY SOME EDIBLE FLOWERS – THEY CAN BE GROWN FROM SEED AND ARE EASY TO SOW If you’re new to growing vegetables, beetroot is a good, easy-to-grow option. The seeds don’t need much encouragement to germinate and they require little maintenance once established. Being a root crop, beetroot does best if the soil is free of large stones. The same is true of carrots. If you want carrots with plenty of flavour, it’s definitely worth growing your own. Both beetroot and carrot seeds tend to germinate within a couple of weeks and you should be harvesting fresh beetroot in eight to 10 weeks and carrots in 14 to 16 weeks. Finally, for a touch of colour try some edible flowers – they can be grown from seed and are easy to sow. Nasturtiums seeds are simply pushed straight into soil

in spring or summer and the flowers taste a touch peppery. Pot Marigolds are also sown at this time of year and their orange flowers have a zingy citrus flavour. The Royal Horticultural Society say: “As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.” n

RHS TOP TIPS FOR MAY: • Watch out for late frosts and protect tender plants • Earth up potatoes and plant any that you might still have • Plant out summer bedding at the end of the month (except in cold areas).

INSPIRED BY THE RACETRACK For Father’s Day this year explore the motorsport inspired timepieces from TAG Heuer. Introducing the Formula 1 Senna Special Edition and the Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Special Edition

I

n La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, just a few months after releasing a quartz version of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition, a new version was launched equipped with a powerful automatic movement and an even stronger design. With these two variations – an automatic chronograph and a quartz chronograph – TAG Heuer continues to pay tribute to admired motor racing legend Ayrton Senna. Considered one of the best drivers of all time, Senna embodied the quest for excellence and performance. Fast, brilliant and fearless, the Brazilian driver never stopped pushing himself beyond the limit. The collaboration between TAG Heuer and Senna started in 1988 and, over the course of his career, the long-standing TAG Heuer ambassador broke many records. At the time, the Brazilian dominated Formula 1, becoming World Champion in 1988, 1989 and 1991. To pay tribute to his legacy, TAG Heuer continues its quest to create the perfect Formula 1 watch.

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition

For this new edition, the designers of TAG Heuer – in collaboration with the Senna Foundation – wanted to work specifically with the colour red, a reference to Ayrton Senna’s original watch. The whole look of the TAG Heuer Senna Special Edition is a very elegant mix of red, anthracite and black, in line with the design codes of the Senna Foundation. The red lacquer is present in the two o’clock pusher, in the crown and at 12 o’clock in the double S, which is the Brazilian driver’s iconic logo brand. Likewise, the subdials are adorned with red

fashion Racing Special Edition is available in two different watch versions, one with a stainless-steel bracelet and one with a blue rubber strap, offering the choice between a sporty or more elegant look. The caseback of the watch is also engraved with the words Red Bull Racing Formula One Team Special Edition.

THE TIMEPIECE IS PERFECTLY CRAFTED INCORPORATING ALL THE GRAPHIC CODES OF THE FORMULA 1 TEAM

touches and the sporty and elegant design of the model is further accentuated thanks to the azure finishing and the six o’clock subdial customised with the Senna logo in red. The watch has a beautiful sunray-brushed anthracite dial with black azurage minute, hour and permanent second chronograph counters, bringing to the dial a bright and luminous effect. The white Super-LumiNova® on the rhodium-plated applied indexes and hands ensures at-a-glance legibility at all speeds and in all lighting conditions. The timepiece also features an ultra-resistant black ceramic bezel, with the number 400 engraved as a reference to the symbolic 400km/h speed that has never been reached in Formula 1.

TO PAY TRIBUTE TO HIS LEGACY, TAG HEUER CONTINUES ITS QUEST TO CREATE THE PERFECT FORMULA 1 WATCH Highly shock-resistant, the bracelet has a folding clasp with a driver extension to fit over the sleeve of a racing suit. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition timepiece is equipped with the automatic Calibre 16, which is protected by a stainless-steel screwdown caseback engraved with the Brazilian driver’s iconic helmet on the back and alongside a special engraving of Senna Special Edition.

Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Special Edition

TAG Heuer unveiled the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Special Edition earlier this year with a stunning new livery and two new references – a new addition to the TAG Heuer Formula 1 best-seller collection. Thanks to its bolder design and advanced technical features, the timepiece is perfectly crafted incorporating all the graphic codes of the Formula 1 Team. For this new version, the designers highlighted the bold colours of the Red Bull Racing Team, such as the mythical dark blue and striking red tones. The new blue sun-brushed dial with a customised minuterie featuring vibrant yellow and red touches is the perfect example of this. The 1/10th second chronograph counter at six o’clock also has yellow and red details and the chronograph central second hand is highlighted in yellow. The Arabic numeral indexes are directly inspired by racing car speedometers and Formula 1 connoisseurs will also notice the subtle reference to their favourite sport in the form of a line above the five and seven numerals. The line is designed to evoke the starting line of a Formula 1 track. The new dial is also inspired by Formula 1 car cockpits and is highly legible to make the time easy to read in all conditions. To complete this bold racing design the Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Special Edition has round pushers painted with a red lacquer outline to highlight the chronograph start pusher at two o’clock. A special bezel is engraved with the word Speed symbolising Formula 1’s quest for ultimate performance. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Red Bull

Where it all began

The partnership between TAG Heuer and Formula 1 started with Jack Heuer, a pioneer and a visionary, when he initiated the first Formula 1 sponsorship agreement. Since this first sponsorship contract was signed by Jack Heuer and the Swiss racing driver Jo Siffert in 1968, TAG Heuer’s association with Formula 1 has never faltered. In 1986, TAG Heuer launched a new collection exclusively dedicated to Formula 1, and since its release it has held a special place in TAG Heuer’s history, becoming one of the brand’s best-selling collections and embodying its strong passion for the racetrack. The story continues to this day with Red Bull Racing – from the drivers to the engineers, the whole team wears TAG Heuer watches on and off the track. n

SKIN PROBLEMS

AND HOW TO TREAT THEM Skin care was once considered ‘just for women’ but the specialist doctors at Discover Laser are welcoming a growing number of men to their skin clinic for dermatology and rejuvenation

M

ore and more men are investing in their skin health and appearance. Some have seen the positive effects of their partner’s treatment, while others have picked up from the media that non-surgical and surgical treatments are for them too. While they have a common desire to resolve skin issues and look and feel their best, their reasons for wanting treatment are varied. I’m troubled by brown patches, lumps and bumps on my skin Many men have neglected their skin (most of us are guilty of not using sunscreen) and have age spots, pigmentation, broken veins and blemishes. Most are nothing to be worried about, but it’s worth getting anything unusual checked out by someone qualified in dermatology. Harmless, or more serious, you can choose to have effective non-surgical and surgical treatments done privately. Blemishes big and small can be banished quickly and effectively with minimal downtime. I look tired all the time Stress and fast living takes its toll physically and is most evident on the face. Many men want to look ‘fresh-faced’ and maintain their appearance to compete in the job market. Smoothing out lines and sagging features with wrinkle-smoothing injections and

dermal fillers gives a stronger, more confident look without looking ‘frozen’ or over-done. My face is red like a heavy drinker Men are often troubled by flushing, facial redness and facial veins. Unbeknown to them, they have a blood vessel disorder called Rosacea, which affects the face, and is made worse by sun, stress, spicy food and alcohol. While there is no permanent cure, symptoms can be greatly reduced through a highly effective combination of treatment which includes laser. The results make a dramatic difference to their confidence and appearance. My excess hair is a pain While many men are thankful for the hair they still have, some have too much. Shaving and painful waxing can lead to annoying bouts of razor burn and ingrowing hairs. Men are starting to discover the benefits of permanent laser hair reduction, which ends the constant cycle of hair removal and the problems it causes. The amount I sweat is embarrassing Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) causes men to be soaked under their arms even when not working out. Those who change shirts several times a day can have injections to get heavy perspiration and confidence under control.

My scar stands out on screen From work meetings to family catch-ups, we now spend a lot of time on camera. Scars we’ve lived with for years (from acne, accident or illness) can suddenly seem more evident. Their appearance can be improved with clinically proven treatments that start a repair process leading to a smoother, flatter, and more even surface. Discover Laser provides an environment where men can feel comfortable and not intimidated. They aim to exceed their expectations and deliver safe subtle improvements to help them feel better about their appearance.

MIND MAT TERS

Therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes asks what a good, bad or ugly divorce looks like and how we can move forward to a happier future

T

he terms divorce and separation are so emotive, it’s not hard to imagine the feelings of failure, guilt, hopelessness and helplessness. I am sure we can agree it is in the most part, a painful and negative experience, creating a ripple effect among family and friends that can lead to division and arguments.

So, how can we reduce the impact of a painful divorce or separation and make it a good one, or at least good enough? The cost of separation is clearly financially high but what of the emotional cost? Divorce is one of the five biggest causes of stress. Part of this is down to the uncertainty of what the future holds. You may be feeling betrayed or feel you have failed yourself or your family in some way. You may feel alone and fearful, unsure how to tell family, friends and colleagues. You may be concerned how you will manage financially once your assets have been divided. Starting again as a single person may be causing undue stress. All of this impacts us greatly no matter what your personal circumstances are. In addition, what you may not realise is this stress can also cause physical symptoms. That’s why it is important to get support. No one has to suffer alone with this. Divorce or separation is like any other loss whether you are man or a woman It is painful creating so many emotions that sit so closely with the passing of a loved one in its intensity. In fact, the loss cycle is the same, ranging from denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally, acceptance. These stages are not linear nor are they definitive, but they are a good gauge of where you may be on your stage of the journey.

• Share your thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive environment with people who are experiencing exactly the same struggles as you • Learn how to communicate effectively and stay calm during discussions or conflict with your ex • Learn how to focus on moving forward rather than be stuck with those feelings of helplessness and hopelessness • Build self-reliance, self-esteem and re-build lost confidence after divorce or separation • Find new meaning in life and create a preferred vision of your future • Gain confidence and the tools necessary to begin dating again Whether you are a man or a woman looking for support after a break-up then why not join us. health&beauty RejuvaMed offers a high-tech treatment which can quickly help solve those problems.” The clinic has now treated many patients using the 3D-Vjuve, which is the latest addition to 3D’s range of laser systems. The 3D-Vjuve offers an effective vaginal tightening treatment, working in a minimally invasive way to manage a range of postchildbirth and peri-menopausal issues, from incontinence to vaginal atrophy (thinning and inflammation of the vaginal wall) and dryness. There is increasing research evidence that it can also improve sexual function.

HERE TO HELP RejuvaMed at Holmes Mill offers help to those struggling with NHS HRT shortages, with personally tailored bioidentical HRT

W

ith the NHS now struggling to provide routine treatments, and in particular to supply the vital HRT needed by women going through the menopause, RejuvaMed Health & Wellness in Clitheroe can help. Experienced local GP Dr Helen McKeating is part of the team and specialises in women’s health and gynaecology. RejuvaMed was the first clinic in Lancashire to introduce Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), a natural, individually tailored and effective alternative to current NHS HRT treatments. Bioidentical hormones have the same chemical structure as naturally occurring hormones, which diminish as we age. These can benefit patients who have a hormone imbalance, particularly if they have tried other hormonal medications on the NHS, including HRT, and experienced unwanted side effects.

After an initial consultation, Dr Helen will carry out blood tests to pinpoint specific issues and then prescribe a personalised treatment plan that includes a tailor-made hormone prescription. The medicines are then delivered to your home address.

“BHRT from RejuvaMed has been life-changing!” Mrs Sian Roberts

Bioidentical HRT can give relief from a wide range of pre-menopausal and menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, weight gain and sleep issues.

It can also help treat other hormonal imbalances such as menstrual problems, post-natal depression, osteoporosis and endometriosis. The treatment plan includes regular follow ups and monitoring to ensure optimum results. Prices for Bioidentical HRT start at £50 for a short factfinding consultation. Dr Helen also offers treatment for another common, potentially embarrassing and inconvenient condition. She explains: “Many women experience ‘waterworks’ symptoms which include what we call stress or urge incontinence. This means they have ‘oops! moments’ when coughing, laughing or sneezing, or need to suddenly rush to the toilet. It is thought that up to 60 per cent of women experience such symptoms. “There is limited help that can be offered for such problems by the NHS and often women are ashamed and afraid to seek medical care. But now

After an initial consultation to assess suitability, Dr Helen uses the 3D-Vjuve to treat these embarrassing and often limiting conditions in a fast, painless and highly effective way, with little or no downtime. A consultation with Dr Helen is £50, with each subsequent treatment priced at £550, or just £1400 for the recommended course of three sessions. n For more information or to book a consultation with Dr Helen at our CQC-registered medical clinic, please call 01200 538668

WHEN YOU’RE HYDRATED YOU FIND WEIGHT LOSS EASIER, YOUR STRENGTH GOES UP AND YOUR BODY WORKS BETTER

FIT FOR SUMMER Personal trainer Dan Masters shares his five simple steps that can help you burn fat, workout well and get yourself in shape. Photography: Andy Tighe

W

ant to know the best tips for getting yourself in shape in the shortest term possible? Read on! 1. Bang for buck, focus on what’s going to have the most impact with regards to fat loss. Rule one – calorie deficit, it’s a simple fact that you can’t burn body fat without being in deficit. You may be cutting calories down or increasing output but either way there needs to be a deficit between input and output.

are tired, it’s harder to workout well and harder to stick to a diet. Poor sleep also messes with your blood sugar regulation which effects your ability to lose weight. 4. They say the basics are too basic, but the basics are important – hydrate. When you’re hydrated you find weight loss easier, your strength goes up and your body works better. 5. Track your food. If you are guessing what you’re eating you are probably not hitting the calories, or macros you

should to achieve your goals and if you don’t want to track food, your other option is meal prep or a strict diet programme – that way you know what you are eating and where you need to make changes. Changing your body and your lifestyle can be hard by yourself, but you don’t have to go it alone. If you need help with your nutrition, workout or a place to train, get in touch. n

SPECIAL OFFER No joining fee and a free PT session when you join up at Masters Fitness!

2. Going to the gym. Consistency beats intensity, it’s better to go to the gym every day and do a little bit than go once and train so hard that you can’t move for four days. Keep your workouts manageable and at a level you can sustain for the long term not just a few weeks. 3. Improve your sleep. For me this is non-negotiable, if you don’t sleep well you’ll find burning fat harder. When you

SO MANY FRAGRANCES SO LITTLE TIME! Precious oils from plants such as mimosa, orange blossom and sandalwood create exclusive fragrances that are highly sought-after

T

here appears to be numerous fragrances on the high street, all claiming miracle levels of allure, attraction and seductive power – but take away the packaging and you’d be hard pressed to distinguish one from the other. A traditionally crafted fragrance, however, created from precious plant oils, has a magic all of its own. It can transform everything and everyone, it touches. Because these wonderful ingredients shift and change depending on the pH, dryness or temperature of your skin, they can smell staggeringly beautiful on your best friend, but not quite so endearing on you – or much better still, the other way round. The important trick is to do your homework and find something a little off the beaten track that smells divine on you. At melt, we’d like to think we’ve given you a good place to start.

Jean Charles Brosseau

The Brosseau style is comprised of small details that seem simple yet appeal to women. Beyond the passing trends Brosseau’s fragrances are timeless, as quality and elegance do not require flashy finery. The main goal of Jean-Charles Brosseau is to create high quality fragrances, made of the best components from various world origins. Each fragrance is enclosed in a superb bottle which symbolises the excellence of the French craft. The packaging is classic and restrained and shows the refined discretion of the creator.

Ombre Bleue

Ombre Bleue was designed by Jean-Charles Brosseau and is a perfume encapsulating vacations, beaches and distant travels. Sun-filled memories and childhood scents of the beach and the sea, when you draw near. Every shore offers its own fragrance, orange tree, mimosa and bougainvillea stand for the Mediterranean and the seapink, rose, vanilla and plum the Atlantic. Tiare flower embodies the Pacific. £116

Ruth Mastenbroek

A PRIVATE DECISION With news that NHS waiting lists are growing longer, it is definitely worth considering private treatment with some of the most respected consultants and clinicians in the region

I

f you need medical or dental treatment and don’t want to join a lengthy waiting list, it may be worth considering going down the private healthcare route. You don’t need to have a referral to get private treatment from a consultant or specialist. However, it is widely believed that it is best practice to be referred by your GP or general practice dentist, as they are aware of your medical and dental history and will be able to inform you whether a referral is indeed the best course to take. Some private practitioners and private medical insurance policies will require a referral. If your GP or dentist thinks you need to see a specialist and you want to pay for it privately, they can write a letter of referral to a recommended private consultant or specialist explaining your symptoms. The private healthcare sector is made

YOU WILL HAVE ACCESS TO SPECIALIST MEDICATIONS AND TREATMENTS, THE BEST CONSULTANTS AND CLINICIANS AVAILABLE People choose to go private largely for the excellent facilities and fast access to treatment, seeing the best specialists available. Consultations and appointments are also often at times to suit each

individual patient. While there are many advantages of going down the private health route, the standard of treatment is bound by the same strict regulations faced by all medical professionals. However, shorter waiting times and the facilities that private hospitals and clinics can offer, often make the option of paying for treatment attractive. You will have access to specialist medications and treatments, the best consultants and clinicians available and if you have private health insurance, either through your place of work or independently, it makes ‘going private’ an obvious choice. Private hospitals and clinics are designed to offer specialist, personalised care, the patient to practitioner ratio is advantageous and private clinics generally give patients access to the very best equipment and the latest technology. If you have a medical problem that you would like dealing with swiftly and you want access to the best people and equipment, it is definitely worth considering paying for treatment rather than face lengthy waiting times. There are many private options available throughout the region, private hospitals and clinics will welcome your enquiry and will invite you to a consultation to discuss how they can help. n

GOOD TO BE BACK… Nish Vasant helps people of all ages who have hearing problems, helping them to re-engage and become part of society again. Photography: Kirsten Platt

W

hen father-of-two Dan Ainsworth lost the hearing in his left ear eight years ago, little did he know how it would impact almost all aspects of his life. Without a medical explanation, doctors attributed it to an unexplained infection: “To be honest I struggled. It affected me a lot and I felt very isolated socially and as a result I suffered from depression,” recalls Dan. After trying out an NHS prescribed bi-cross hearing aid system – then a singlesided system, over the years Dan began to lose faith in finding anything that would enable him to hear and function normally. When Dan began researching Starkey hearing aid systems, he made an enquiry and was put in touch with Nish Vasant of Fresh Hearing in Haslingden. Nish is an expert in high-tech hearing solutions that are tailored to an individual’s lifestyle. Dan explains: “In August I went to see Nish at Fresh Hearing for a hearing test. He reassured me from the start there would be something that would help me deal with my hearing loss. He reassured me that the technology available now would definitely be suitable for me and my situation.” After consultations with Nish it was decided that a Starkey Evolv AI, ultradiscreet, behind-the-ear hearing aid would

be the best solution – and it has transformed Dan’s life! “Going to Nish at Fresh Hearing really has given me a new lease of life,” says Dan, who works as a production manager.

IT’S GENERALLY MADE ME MORE CONFIDENT AND TALKATIVE – AND MUCH HAPPIER “The hearing aid communicates with my phone and when I double tap it goes into ‘Edge’ mode, focusing on the sounds around me – when I need it. It’s artificial intelligence-led – it’s very intuitive, so it helps in conversations adapting to the sounds around me. “Before I got the hearing aid I struggled to have conversations at work when the machines were operating but now, I am comfortable to show visitors around and chat to them and it doesn’t matter if the

machines are on or which side the person I am talking to is on.” As an established sound performance industry leader, Starkey has taken the Evolv AI to new heights, so that adjustments are instantaneous even in the most challenging listening situations. Like Dan, wearers can hear speech comfortably even in busy settings, while unwanted noise is suppressed. It also connects via Bluetooth® to your smart phone enabling the wearer to make and receive phone calls and stream music. “It’s generally made me more confident and talkative – and much happier,” says Dan, whose wife Sarah immediately noticed a difference in Dan’s confidence. Delighted to be able to help Dan, Nish of Fresh Hearing, concluded: “It has been such a rewarding process helping Dan finally hear. The new Starkey Evolv AI range has been a game changer. Just having the ability to switch into ‘Edge’ mode with a click of a button means that customers are able to hear so much better in background noise environments.” n

In what was a complex challenge, the professionals at Renovo Dental formulated a dental implant plan that has been a huge success for patient Jack Morris

s an extremely active 83-yearold, Jack Morris has undergone life-changing, dental implant treatment that has given him the smile he has always wanted. Jack has also seen the benefits to his health and confidence too – and it’s all thanks to the professionals at Renovo Dental. Seeking specialist dental treatment, patients throughout the UK travel to the new, Ribble Valley-based Renovo Dental, where there is a top team of dental specialists, in-house dental technicians and general practitioners working with some of the very latest stateof-the-art technology. After wearing loose dentures for several years and being advised on numerous occasions there was insufficient bone for dental implants, Jack felt he had come to the end of the road in his attempts to resolve the problem. But when he asked for a consultation with the team at Renovo Dental, he began to see light at the end of the tunnel, as he explains: “I had lost my upper teeth at quite an early

Dr Usman Riaz of Renovo Dental, having undergone implants with him almost a decade ago. “She was highly pleased with her implants,” says Jack. “I had always been told that I had insufficient bone to have implants and that it would be too complex – I wasn’t making any progress in improving the situation so I asked Shirley if Usman would see me for an assessment.” Usman, a highly experienced clinician with

Working alongside Usman on Jack’s dentistry was highly experienced specialist periodontist and implant surgeon Dr Khurrum Hussain, who completed specialist training in periodontology at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute, London. As a periodontal specialist, he deals with gum disease and the soft tissue surrounding the palate, degenerating bone issues and failing implants. Following treatment to improve bone density and the health of Jack’s gums, a period of healing followed before the final implant-supported teeth were fitted – and the results have been transformative for Jack:

“The team at Renovo have been superb! I can’t recommend them highly enough. They treat you as a client with total respect – you’re not just a number. “All the staff are so reassuring. It’s made a terrific difference to my life,” says Jack, who spends time with Shirley in Tenerife each year. “I can now eat okay – and I like my food!” says the former award-winning Bolton butcher. Speaking about Jack’s treatment, Usman adds: “Jack is a really sociable guy, prominent in the community and resolving his dental problems was a big thing for him. It wasn’t just about aesthetics it was a functional issue that was affecting his quality of life.” As a brand-new clinic, Renovo has invested in the latest digital dental technology, including a state-of-the-art CT scanner which allows the team to plan and perform very precise implant surgery. This CT-guided surgery for implants is faster, easier and more efficient for surgeons and safer, more comfortable and results in faster healing for patients.

a special interest in aesthetic and implant dentistry, readily agreed to see Jack, who went along to the beautifully restored Renovo surgery in the village of Chatburn: “Usman carried out the assessment – and while he said implants would be quite complex, he said it was possible.” Usman explains: “Jack had been told that implants just weren’t possible, but he persevered. He was struggling with loose fitting, partial dentures and was finding it difficult to eat. “During the initial assessment a CT scan was done and yes, it revealed Jack didn’t have sufficient bone. So, we agreed that bone grafting was the solution.” Bone grafting was performed to replace destroyed bone surrounding the teeth roots. The bone graft then helped to serve as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone. Testament to their skills, the team at Renovo, carried out the bone graft procedure in the same visit as the implant placements.

Preparation is key to the success and the team of dental nurses, dental technicians and implant surgeons, all play their part on the day.

WE FIRST MET JACK EARLIER THIS YEAR AND INFORMED HIM NOT ONLY HOW WE COULD HELP, BUT HOW WE COULD GIVE JACK THE SMILE HE ALWAYS WANTED… “No two smiles are the same, so there is no ‘one-size-fits all’ when it comes to this level of implant dentistry,” says Usman. “Like all our other patients, the implants have completely changed Jack’s smile,” adds Usman. “Implants can transform people – they gain confidence and restore self-esteem. It may sound clichéd, but this treatment really does change their lives.” n Renovo Dental treats patients throughout the region, who have been referred by their general dentist as well as self-referrals

CROMWELL IN L ANCASHIRE G enerations of travellers along the B6243 between Clitheroe and Hurst Green have been charmed by the crossing of Lower Hodder Bridge. Here, the river is beautiful both upstream and downstream. Most eyes, however, will be trained on a man-made feature just a few yards downstream of the present bridge, namely an older bridge: a fine, high, three-arched structure which can still be crossed on foot with care. By long tradition this is ‘Cromwell’s Bridge’, but what are the facts?

Historian and fell-walker Andrew Stachulski takes a look at a celebrated bridge, the Civil War and its Lancashire connections Without question, the Lord Protector-to-be was in the area in 1648, en route to the Battle of Preston. That proved to be a significant victory for Cromwell over a joint English and Scottish army, which effectively ended any armed support for the Royalist cause from that quarter. Indeed, this battle concluded the second

phase of the Civil War – the final trial, sentencing and execution of Charles I took place just a few months later. It is believed that Cromwell stayed at Stonyhurst for one night prior to the battle – a long-held tradition maintains that he slept in his armour through suspicion of his Catholic hosts. Cromwell arrived in Lancashire

lifestyle

from the east, via Skipton, Gisburn and Stonyhurst, surprising the Royalist forces who had become spread over a long distance. At Preston, there was fierce fighting around modern-day Ribbleton Lane, but soon Cromwell’s troops had gained a decisive victory. The Royalist forces were scattered. But what of the bridge? All the evidence is that it is old enough, probably built by Sir Richard Shireburn, lord of the manor, in 1562. The present road bridge is much more recent, probably built around 1820.

get a glimpse of an otter. The military associations of the area will seem part of another world. Returning finally to those Civil War days, they were dark times for Lancashire. Apart from the direct loss of fighting men during the war, there was collateral loss of life and property as much fighting took Image courtesy of artist: W Geoff Rollinson

Anyone who has seen the old bridge at close quarters, however, might be slightly incredulous at the thought of hundreds or thousands of troops crossing it. Most likely the majority of Cromwell’s ‘model army’, as they became known, would have forded the river on foot. I have certainly crossed the bridge once, long ago, but no recommendation to follow is offered. The stonework is quite narrow, and the highest point feels decidedly exposed. You have been warned! In these days, when so much is made of the Tolkien Trail and Tolkien’s involvement with Stonyhurst, the setting is definitely evocative. A short distance downstream from Lower Hodder is the confluence of Hodder and Ribble, and in a further half-mile the Calder joins the combined stream. This juxtaposition of the bridge with the merging of three rivers finds a clear parallel in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy – Tolkien’s Brandywine Bridge, within the Shire, crosses the Brandywine and is close to the Withywindle and Shirebourne rivers. Of all the walks you can do from the Hurst Green-Stonyhurst area, the visit to Lower Hodder should definitely not be omitted. For the walker, the Hodder makes a splendid companion, combining delightful scenery with interesting wildlife. The section between Lower and Higher Hodder bridges, where you are never more than a mile or so from Stonyhurst College, is particularly fine. Grey wagtail, dipper, kingfisher, heron and less common ducks such as goosander are all likely to be seen – and you may

place in the county. Additionally, many were struck down by a severe bout of the plague around 1644 to 1646. For a more detailed study of this period, take a look at Lancashire At War: Cavaliers and Roundheads 1642-1651, by J J Bagley and A S Lewis (Dalesman Books, 1977). It seems a far cry indeed from the idyllic modern-day setting of Lower Hodder Bridge. n

all the way from E-test, for our youngest members, to A-test which is achieved by very few people each year across the entire country. The achievement is presented in the form of a felt which sits behind your Pony Club badge on your jumper or jacket and the different levels of ability are widely recognised across the equestrian world. At B-test level, a member is considered to have a very competent understanding of horses and this level is preferable if you want to study riding as part of a Physical Education GCSE.

Learning about horsemanship, pony care and safety gives Chipping Pony Club members the opportunity to earn achievement badges, writes Megan Conlon. Photography: Diane Marsden

T

he Pony Club offers a wide range of opportunities and qualifications, which allow members of all ages and abilities to set goals and strive to accomplish them. For the youngest members, this begins with Mini Achievement Badges which can be earned at Badge Days. These aim to provide members with a solid foundation of knowledge to ease them into the learning of horsemanship. Some of the many topics include points of the pony, yard safety, leading and handling, dressage movements and even things like wildlife and birds. For junior members there are the main

Achievement Badges, which cover topics in much more depth and detail. Last month, Chipping members had the opportunity to earn badges at our Easter Badge Day, where instructors and older members taught them all they needed to know about leading, road safety and equine behaviour. Lots of fun was had by all involved and the day finished off with a big Easter egg hunt where members displayed their true camaraderie and banded together to find every last egg and make sure everyone had their fair share. Everyone went home with a bag of eggs, a handful of badges and a smile on their face, and we can’t wait to see the badges on display on their Pony Club jumpers at the next rally – better get sewing! These badges are all supplementary to the Pony Club Tests, where members must put their horsemanship into practice in both a ridden section and a dismounted horse and pony care section. The tests range

Chipping holds rallies all year round, as well as an annual residential summer camp, where the primary focus of instructors is to aid members in attaining these tests, building confidence and skill with every lesson. The badge days are also advised for the horse and pony care side of the tests. It is no coincidence that the higher-level felts are often seen alongside an arm full of badges! Chipping encourages members of all ages and abilities to give the tests a go, to learn and have an achievement of which they can be proud. n

DREAMS DO COME TRUE Highclere’s Jason Fildes reports on a memorable day that saw a syndicate-owned filly win the 1000 Guineas

W

hat an incredible story this is. In the world of horse racing where the big races are dominated by the financial superpowers of Arab owners or the Irish Coolmore organisation, a filly, bought for only £60,000, owned by a syndicate, wins one of the five British Classics at odds of 18-1. This is what happened at the famous Rowley Mile Racecourse at Newmarket. Last year Cachet, trained by George Boughey, ran eight times, having only been bought at the breeze up sales in April. Her season finished off with that memorable trip to the Breeders’ Cup in California in November. After that, George gave her a well-earned break before her reappearance in the Nell Gwynn Stakes at Newmarket. She won that day, encouraging us to have a crack at the 1000 Guineas, the second of the Classics run over one mile for three-year-old fillies, to be held on the first Sunday in May. Although only an outsider in the field of 13, we were hopeful of a good run, perhaps in the first six but expectations were rightfully

limited with the best fillies from Ireland and France among the opposition plus the Godolphin and Juddmonte-owned fillies from top UK stables. Nevertheless, the nerves and excitement among the large group of Highclere owners and friends was building – and by race time of 3.40pm it was at fever pitch!

Our trainer, George Boughey is only 29 years old and has only been training for three years. George’s rise has been phenomenal and he is a trainer with a huge future. He had Cachet looking fabulous for the big day and primed to perfection. Our jockey, James Doyle, was a substitute for William Buick who was claimed to ride for

83

Godolphin in a late switch and James’ plan was to let Cachet jump out of the stalls and bowl along in front, where she likes to be. It worked brilliantly as James was able to take her along in the lead without having to go too fast in front. She settled beautifully and was clearly enjoying herself and in a great rhythm. She was still a length in front at the 2f pole when James asked her to stretch on and she did – extending her advantage with some of the favourites not making any impression on her. It’s a long last furlong up a slight incline and it seemed like everything was in slow motion. Having been in front all the way, Cachet was getting tired but she’s tough and kept on bravely all the way to the line. It was only a neck back to the second, but she had held on. Cue delirious scenes in the stands with all the owners hugging one another in disbelief and what a welcome our wonderful filly got when she returned to the Winner’s Enclosure. I think the celebrations are still going on in certain parts of the country but suffice to say that Cachet has now won over £450k in prize money and is heading next for either the French 1000 Guineas at Longchamp, Paris, or Royal Ascot (or even both). George reports her to be really well and ready to go again. She loves her racing. Highclere boss Harry Herbert was very emotional afterwards. Cachet was bought by his nephew, Jake Warren and it’s a lifetime ambition realised in Highclere’s 30th anniversary year. What an achievement – and what a thrill for all of us involved! n

n 2017 veteran Darren Hardy was medically discharged from the forces after suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – a mental illness so synonymous with those who have served our country, it’s easy to forget that when soldiers return to their family and loved ones, settling back into normal routine is not always straight forward. As part of his recovery, Darren has used the last five years to retrain his brain and challenge his body to the maximum. He has also made it his duty to help others and raise awareness of men’s mental health issues. According to mentalhealth.org.uk in England, around one in eight men has a common mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder or

obsessive-compulsive disorder. Furthermore, three times as many men than women die by suicide and men aged 40 to 49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK. Sadly, this is largely down to negative stigmas associated with mental health with only 36 per cent of NHS referrals for talking therapies are for men. Knowing how difficult it is for men to open up and talk candidly about feelings and experiences, Darren now uses extreme endurance events to help raise awareness of men’s mental health and talks openly about his own suffering to get other men to communicate better. Darren said: “There is very much a feeling of ‘stiff upper lip’ in the military and the male psyche also leans towards wanting to be the bread winner of the family, ultimately failing to recognise when they may need help. “For me I had to retrain the thoughts in my head. I needed to challenge myself so I became fitter, stronger and fuelled my body with what it needed and not what it thought it wanted.” Darren has undertaken some epic endurance races to keep up the momentum, such as the 10X 10X 10 Ironman which is 10 Ironmans over 10 days in 10 locations. It required him to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 1 12 miles and run 26.2 miles every single day and he did all of this for Help the Heroes. He is able to do such astounding events thanks to his partnership with Ribble Cycles

who take good care of every athlete they work with. “When I first looked into getting help for PTSD, I did it through the military and doing this Ironman for Help the Heroes allowed me to give something back. At the time of my first event, I didn’t even have a bike and it’s thanks to Ribble Cycles that I am well cared for every time I decide to undertake a new, risky challenge. They’re on my side and support my cause 100 per cent. “Doing these events for charitable causes also helps me to stay focused. Knowing

that I am helping someone else keeps me positive and with a strong mindset.” There’s no doubt that Darren’s challenges are so exciting they easily grab the headlines and that’s a great platform to get people talking about the reasons behind his events, but his motivational speaking has just as much an impact on those who are lucky enough to be in his company. Darren continued: “Not everyone is going to sign up for their next local triathlon to make them feel better. It’s about making small changes and finding little things that can help with your daily mindset to allow

IT’S THANKS TO RIBBLE CYCLES THAT I AM WELL CARED FOR EVERY TIME I DECIDE TO UNDERTAKE A NEW, RISKY CHALLENGE. THEY’RE ON MY SIDE AND SUPPORT MY CAUSE you to take hold of the day that lies ahead. One of the first things I recommend to most people is to go to bed an hour earlier and get up an hour earlier. “Use that hour in the morning for yourself and go for a walk, a bike ride, do some meditation or yoga. Whatever you do, be in the moment. Doing this will start the day positively to help you tackle whatever comes your way.”

Darren also explains what you can do to help if you feel that someone you know may be going through a difficult time. “Everyone asks as routine if you’re okay and generally, even if you aren’t, you will say you’re fine. If you feel someone you are close to is having a hard time, get them out of the house, offer to go for a brew – it’s amazing how much people will open up over a cup of tea and even if you haven’t tackled the problem that’s troubling them, it’s likely you’ve made them feel less alone.” Darren is currently working towards his next daredevil challenge – a triathlon in the Arctic circle. He said: “I am in the process of working out the funding and logistics for this event but I am very much looking forward to testing myself in the most severe conditions on the planet. If all goes to plan it will take place between September 2022 and March 2023, so watch this space.” n For more information and to keep up to date with Darren’s latest challenges follow him on social media

Live Magazines’ Tedd Walmsley looks forward to seeing improved roads in Clitheroe and urges readers to share their opinions during public consultation on future house building and development

W

ell let’s start with the good news this month. I was appalled at the condition of the roads in the conservation area around Castle Street in Clitheroe and was compelled to contact Cllr Sue Hind on the matter. Here’s what she had to say: “Clitheroe is a beautiful market town with a mediaeval castle as its centrepiece. But it is fast becoming Lancashire’s Cinderella because there has been no capital investment for so long. Other towns have pushed us into the role of poor relation, you only have to look at the investment poured into Padiham, Whalley et al. “So, I set up Clitheroe Town Team with a view to reviewing and hopefully solving long overdue public realm issues. Cabinet member for Highways, Charlie Edwards, was sympathetic to our cause as was the leader of LCC after her visit. “In LCC’s 2022 budget there appeared to be £300k funding for improving conservation areas in our county. This funding was only available via match funding from the district involved. RVBC agreed to be that district. Good news – their budget working group will meet late May to discuss and approve the spend which will be ratified at a Policy and Finance meeting in June/July. “Any timetable for carrying out this much-needed work will undergo robust consultation with local traders so everyone will become involved and take ownership. That’s the way communities work best – not top down.” n less good news – Cllr Ged Mirfin confirmed that crime in the Ribble Valley is on the rise with a 14 per cent increase year on year. A worrying trend. I haven’t time to delve into the type of crime but worryingly, violence associated with drink is firmly on the rise. I’ve asked the council for an update on CCTV improvements but, as yet, had no response. With regards to irate retailers, one local events organiser has used the Freedom of Information

I

Act to try and establish once and for all the costs of the ARC report. This was commissioned by the council and guesstimates range from £40k to 80k – an incredible amount of money that many, including me, feel could have been better spent to help businesses and footfall in ‘building back stronger’. Once they have this intel, I will share in my next column if that is possible. One of the report’s key criticisms of the council’s leadership and officers is poor communication and I’ve asked the leader of the council and head of communications to confirm a meeting to discuss the questions I’ve asked, and for them to clarify the future of the Ribble Valley in a two-page article – but as yet I’ve had no response. It’s also been pointed out to me that the @goribblevalley twitter page, the official site for Ribble Valley tourism has seen only one tweet in the last 12 months – I’m keen to understand how this can be possible? If this is the case, it’s very worrying and perhaps ARC make a valid point.

T

he last topic this month is quite a big one as we see public consultation on the next Core Strategy document – a vital plan used to guide development, including house building, over the forthcoming years. In a recent meeting with Cllr Kevin Horkin, he asked me to implore readers to share their thoughts and concerns with the council when given the opportunity. New homes are subject to levies from the builders known as Section 106 money. It’s meant to be used for infrastructure projects such as new schools and health centres and facilities to help with the influx of new residents to the Valley. Having watched and personally fought new building, notably in Longridge, there are now thousands of new homes built or passed for planning, but where are these new schools and surgeries? It’s bad enough in Clitheroe and Whalley but as Longridge is bordered by Preston, their City Council have also created huge new estates with what is now a creaking infrastructure. This is your opportunity to help guide the plan – please do it to help both yourself and your children to ensure the Ribble Valley remains one of the best places in the UK to live and work. The council are now on countdown to the 2023 elections – it’s my duty, on your behalf, to continue to ask the questions and hope to report back with some positive answers in our double summer issue in June. n

The views above are my own and I’d be delighted to get some replies to my questions and will report back on any progress and positive outcomes. tedd.walmsley@live-magazines.co.uk TM

PUBLIC RIGHTS OF WAY OVER MY PROPERTY – WHAT ARE MY DUTIES? It is not uncommon for properties, particularly those in rural areas, to have public rights of way over them, which can be found on Ordnance Survey maps and are revealed by local searches when purchasing properties, explains Graeme Booth, property solicitor at Farleys

T

he majority of public rights of way come into existence by way of presumed dedication ie long use by the public without interruption or objection. They can also be created by the Highway Authorities if they believe that a right of way over certain land would add to the public’s convenience and enjoyment, or by a landowner expressly dedicating a route across their property for the benefit of the public. Public rights of way can take several forms: • Footpaths – for walking, running, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs • Bridleways – for walking, horse riding, bicycles, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Restricted byways – for any transport without a motor and mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs • Byways open to all traffic – for any kind of transport, including cars When a public right of way crosses private property, whilst the Highways Agency is responsible for maintaining the surface, the property owner must not allow it to be obstructed. This can include: • Stopping vegetation next to the right of way from overhanging or encroaching it in such a way as to cause an obstruction • Providing and maintaining stiles and gates in a condition that is safe and convenient for public use • Ensuring that the width of bridleways is at least 3m and footpaths at least 1.5m. When a right of way crosses a field, the widths reduce to 2m for a bridleway and 1m for footpaths • If the property is farmland, observing guidance on keeping cattle in fields that have public access, as prescribed by the

Health and Safety Executive eg bulls over the age of 10 months of particular breeds must not be kept in fields with public access. Landowners can be prosecuted for keeping any potentially dangerous animal on land crossed by a right of way • Likewise, if a right of way crosses a field, keeping it free from crops or other cultivation. If a property owner wishes to carry out works to their property that will impact upon a public right of way, they may need permission from the local authority and they must ensure that the right of way is reinstated and marked on the ground after the works have been carried out. n

For advice on your duties as a property owner with regards to public rights of way over your property, contact Farleys’ property law experts on 01254 368040, email: info@farleys.com, or visit: farleys.com

HOME TRUTHS

T

he theme for this month’s article is very much based on the past present and future. We stand on the shoulders of those who lived before, to be where we are reliant on future generations to take us where we want to be. I had the opportunity to reflect further on my 30th anniversary of being an MP – I have witnessed lots of changes. It is the people working in Parliament who make it and I am grateful for being afforded the opportunity to hone my skills over such a long period of time and my present job of being Deputy Speaker is incredibly rewarding especially working so closely with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who is a consummate professional in his role as Speaker. It was a shame not to have the Queen at the State Opening of Parliament but HRH Prince Charles, accompanied by his heir, Prince

William and the Duchess of Cornwall added pomp and dignity to the ceremony. We wish the Queen well as she approaches her Platinum Jubilee. I will be in the Ribble Valley for the four-day Bank Holiday and I’m looking forward to celebrating with my constituents. I met some stars of the future and I have great confidence in what they will be bringing to the table in progressing our nation. Apprentices from BAE Systems are specialising in all disciplines and it is their skills which will take our country forward. They are the talents who will be advancing new technologies and taking them to stages we never thought possible. As we have seen from the appalling actions of Putin’s Russia, the defence industry is as relevant in 2022 as it has ever been. Also this month, I visited Balderstone St Leonards School to chat to pupils and teachers. What a happy school, and it was such a delight to see so many smiling people. The youngsters were smart, charming and so polite but at the same time they showed confidence when asking questions about my job. The pupils had me baking garlic bread, showed me outside arts projects and took

me to their wild garden with its own brook and told me about the wildlife they had seen there, including a deer. They also all went into the school yard to receive the Commonwealth Games baton from another school. The Balderstone pupils were to take it onto its next stage accompanied by two pupils on horses and other pupils with banners. I drove away from the school thinking how brilliant it was and how lucky we are that this is our next generation. I had the privilege of meeting one of the last four surviving Apollomission moonwalkers, Charlie Duke and also Jared Issacman, a 39-year-old-entrepreneur who has his own space mission. Jared is worth a couple of billion dollars and is investing in all our futures. His next mission is in November and I cheekily suggested that if one of the astronauts drops out he might think of me, ‘Parliamentary timetable allowing!’ There are many uncertainties about the future, but meeting all of these people I have nothing other than complete confidence that we are in safe hands. n

he beautifully refurbished Mytton Fold Hotel has become the venue of choice for a whole host of events. From glamorous weddings for up to 250 guests, small intimate family gatherings and conferencing spaces that are totally unique in their diversity. The remodelling of Mytton Fold has gone far beyond the hotel’s elegant new look – the whole space has been well considered on every level giving diners, guests, newlyweds and business-people the opportunity to use the layout as they wish. While the restaurant and the Calder Suite are in the main hotel, the other function suites are independent with their own

THE REMODELLING OF MYTTON FOLD HAS GONE FAR BEYOND THE HOTEL’S ELEGANT NEW LOOK This endlessly versatile venue has become renowned for weddings in the elegant Ribble and Abbey Suites, which together can seat up to 250 guests or alternatively for a smaller event they can be used separately seating 70 and 180 respectively. For weddings the rooms are lavishly decorated with abundant floral displays – couples can also marry outdoors in one of the delightful gazebos in the private gardens with stunning countryside views over the Ribble Valley.

It’s no secret that Mytton Fold is a delightful wedding venue – but what about the other opportunities that the hotel can provide for corporate clients, clubs, charity dinners and private dining? While a full range of package options are available for corporate events, you can design your own programme with the help of Mytton’s dedicated events team. Let’s take a closer look at some of the options: Calder Suite: Perfect for small business meetings, the Calder seats up to 14 delegates. Meetings can be on a day or overnight basis

and the suite itself has conference table and flat screen TV for presentations. Situated within the hotel, the Calder can also be used as an intimate private dining room – often used the evening before a wedding or for small family celebrations.

Ribble Suite: Like the Abbey and Dunsop, a flat screen TV and projector can be used in here – just let the events team know your requirements. Hosting up to 70 guests or delegates, the Ribble is perfect for charity lunches or larger business

Abbey Suite: The largest space within the functions facility that stands independently from the hotel and has full disabled access. Each of the three suites within the singlestorey building has been totally refurbished to feature French-style chandeliers, elegant heritage colours and panelling with wellconsidered, discrete partitioning that can open up or close off adjoining spaces. On its own the Abbey can cater for 180 as a stand-alone suite but with the partition panelling open to the Ribble Suite, the space can cater for 250.

THE 37-BEDROOMED MYTTON FOLD HOTEL IS PERFECT FOR JUST ABOUT ANY EVENT meetings. When dressed, the room is also a magical venue for weddings too. Dunsop Suite: This is a versatile space that is attached to the Abbey Suite. As it adjoins the larger suite, the Dunsop can be used as a ‘breakout’ room or for a buffet during meetings or conferences. For weddings it can be used as an adjoining

soft play area for children separate from the main function room while for a prom event it can be used for a photo booth. The 37-bedroomed Mytton Fold Hotel is perfect for just about any event. For weddings and parties it is the ideal

celebratory space and for corporate use, it is a smart choice for conference or theatrestyle presentations and meetings. The beautifully appointed bedrooms are perfect for wedding guest accommodation as well as providing bed and breakfast facilities for business use. Mytton Fold can host breakfast meetings and can offer half-day, full day and 24-hour delegate packages. The events team will be delighted to speak with you with regards to room hire and all the facilities they can provide, which can include tea, coffee, breakfast rolls, mid-morning tea and biscuits, lunch, water, pads, pens and flipcharts, LCD projector, free car parking and free wi-fi. ith ‘bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying’, the 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment supported by the British Army Band Catterick will march through Clitheroe centre on Tuesday, 24th May to mark the start of the Jubilee celebrations. The Queen awarded the Freedom of the Borough to the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment in 2011. The honour dates from Roman times when troops were not allowed to enter a town or city bearing arms without the express permission of the authorities. These days, it is a ceremonial honour showing the ties between a borough and a particular regiment.

SPEZIAL NIGHT Adidas Spezial and Liam Gallagher recently staged an incredible one-off charity concert at Blackburn’s King George’s Hall revealing a much-anticipated new trainer collaboration

S

uper-fans applied in their tens of thousands to attend a surprise, intimate gig with Liam Gallagher to launch a trainer partnership with the adidas Spezial collection, while raising vital funds for local homeless charity Nightsafe. Gallagher debuted the new LG2SPZL shoe – a take on the iconic Barrington Smash – on stage at the concert at King George’s Hall, which is celebrating its centenary year. The adidas Spezial range was founded and curated by lifelong three-stripes fan Gary Aspden from Darwen. The pair, who are good friends, have worked together on a number of projects over the past two decades, including the launch of their first collaborative shoe – the LG SPZL – in 2019.

The gig came hot on the heels of the release of Gallagher’s new single Better Days and ahead of the launch of his third solo album on 27th May.

BLACKBURN, LANCASHIRE, TOP NIGHT! YOU SMASHED IT. THANKS FOR HAVING US Fans who were joined by celebrities including boxer Rick Hatton and loyal adidas Spezial follower Fenners, from Soccer AM, chanted Gallagher’s name as he arrived on stage just after 9pm. During the thrilling set he debuted his new song World in Need and performed Oasis anthems including Wonderwall, Slide Away and Cigarettes and Alcohol. Tweeting afterwards, the showman said:

“Blackburn, Lancashire, top night! You smashed it. Thanks for having us. Until next time.” Speaking afterwards, Gary, said: “What happened in Blackburn last night was so much more than a gig. It showed the importance of community and looking after one another. I am very grateful to both Liam Gallagher and adidas for supporting the idea. “Liam messaged me to say that it was a top crowd and described Nightsafe’s efforts as ‘biblical’.” This is the third event Gary has shone the adidas spotlight on Blackburn with all three events supporting Nightsafe – a charity Gary is an ambassador of and is proud to support. Jan Larkin, Nightsafe CEO, said: “We are thrilled that Liam and Gary have chosen to support Nightsafe at a time when our services are needed more than ever. “Liam’s song Better Days couldn’t be more poignant. Nightsafe can look forward to better days ahead thanks to last night’s event.” Blackburn with Darwen is widely regarded as the birthplace of Spezial and the concert was the first time Gallagher has ever performed in Blackburn. Chief Executive of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Denise Park added: “What a huge coup to have Liam Gallagher perform at King George’s Hall in its 100th year. The gig has brought a real boost to the town while supporting the fantastic efforts of Nightsafe.” n

hether you choose to marry in the pretty pergola that is the Gibbon Bridge bandstand or in the light and airy orangery which opens up onto the terrace with stunning views, there is no doubt that this is a very special wedding venue. Gibbon Bridge gives couples the reassurance that, whatever the weather, your wedding will be perfect. The lovely orangery, with its spotless white walls, wedding drapes, apple blossom trees and romantic flickering candles, forms the perfect blank canvas for brides to add their own personal touches. It is a long-standing favourite of many couples who are looking for a venue that they can trust to create their perfect day. Couples

don’t just get a wedding co-ordinator at Gibbon Bridge, they get a whole team, who are dedicated to making the wedding day, and the run up to it, stress free and fun!

NEW TO THE GIBBON BRIDGE IS THE BLISS BRIDAL APARTMENT, WHERE THE BRIDE-TO-BE AND THE MAIN BRIDAL PARTY CAN STAY IN THIS RELAXED, CALMING SPACE As part of the build-up to the big day couples are invited to a wedding taster evening, usually held in springtime. They can bring family and friends, or come à deux, but it gives them an opportunity to sample the various dishes and wines available, which hopefully makes choosing their wedding breakfast easier! The evening kicks off with Prosecco and canapes (which they can also choose for their wedding) followed by their choices from the wedding menus. Whether it be pork belly with apple and crackling, shin of beef or sausage and mash, all the food is freshly prepared and the choice of desserts (made in the on-site bakery) can be a difficult one with couples often deciding on the ‘assiette’ which is made up of three

EDUCATIONN E W S PAINTING THE TOWN CLARET Two giants of Burnley have been celebrating their successful partnership after creating a day to remember for fans at Turf Moor. The College Clarets takeover saw a whole host of exciting activities staged by students and staff from Burnley College as they beat Wolves 1-0. There were interactive activities throughout the day and every corner of the stadium was awash with College Clarets scarves and activities showing off the very best that the college has to offer, from creative projects to breathtaking performances. Fans could pitch their gaming skills against the college’s highly-skilled Esports Academy team, which is already partnered with the official Burnley FC Esports team. Karen Buchanan, Principal of Burnley College, said it was an amazing day, showcasing the power of collaboration between the college and football club: “The iconic stage of Turf Moor was the perfect location – what an incredible day!”

FOOTBALL DEAL Burnley College Sixth Form Centre has signed an exciting deal with youth football club Clitheroe Wolves in what is being described as a massive boost for the community in the Ribble Valley. The three-year agreement will see the club’s coaching team and players proudly display the college’s name on new clothing and training equipment. The players will also have the opportunity to take part in strength and conditioning training at Fitness Evolution’s new Evolution Performance Centre, Burnley College’s award-winning on-site gym and fitness centre. Clitheroe Wolves FC has more than 60 teams of players, ranging from the Under-sevens to Under-18s. Ross Hibbert, Chairman of Clitheroe Wolves, says there’s so much support for the club within the community: “We’ve always had the support of our players’ parents and we’re always grateful for that. But to be able to work hand in hand with Burnley College is amazing. We now have more than 1,000 players and more than 60 teams so, to sign up with a professional and respected institution such as Burnley College is a massive boost.

PSYCHOLOGY CAREERS Eight psychology students from Burnley College University courses have secured themselves work in careers they love after impressing employers on scheduled field trips. Seven students have gained positions in a combination of full-time and part-time roles at Kemple View – a high dependency rehabilitation unit which aims to ‘maximise an individual’s opportunity for recovery and to lead a more independent life back in the community.’ An eighth student has secured themselves valuable experience in their chosen career working with adults diagnosed with autism. The learners are all in their third year reading a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counselling. Lecturer Ahad Warsi says he’s proud of all of them: “What is so special about this group of undergraduates is just how motivated they are. Their level of skills and ability are easily matched by their passion for the subject and their desire to get inside the industry and start making a real difference.”

OLYMPIC SPEAKER Olympic medallist Marilyn Okoro was the guest speaker at Westholme’s Sports Awards held at Ewood Park. Marilyn spoke of her love of sport as a child and explained how running had helped her holistic development. To dream ‘audaciously big’ was one of the many pearls of wisdom that Marilyn imparted to the 320 guests in attendance. Marilyn presented a number of awards during the evening including over 40 Sporting Excellence trophies for those competing at regional and/or national level in their respective sport.

MUSICAL EVENING Westholme welcomed everyone to their annual Spring Concert, held at the Croston Theatre. Students from all years at Senior School were represented, including the Junior and Senior Choir, Chamber Choirs, Junior and Senior Orchestras, Swing Band and Brass Band, to name but a few of the wonderfully talented musicians. The joy of spring was delivered through beautiful harmonies and lively performances and with a programme that ranged from classical to the movies – there was certainly something for everyone.

JUDY MURRAY OBE TAKES CENTRE COURT Leading Catholic boarding school, Stonyhurst, and its pupils were honoured to welcome Judy Murray OBE for a Q&A evening recently. The following day pupils had the privilege of attending a tennis coaching masterclass by the Scottish coach as part of their elite tennis programme. The mum of Wimbledon champions Andy and Jamie, Judy was invited to the school by Stonyhurst’s Director of Tennis, David Shaw, who Judy first met in 1995 when they both completed their final tennis coaching qualifications. Pupils had the opportunity to ask Judy questions about her career in tennis and coaching, her life in tennis and her work to promote more women to get involved in

the sport. Judy, who is set to return to the school in the future, commented: “The children that I have met here have been absolutely exemplary, they’re so incredibly curious, they’re polite and they’re looking to learn.’’ Stonyhurst, which was recently named Lawn Tennis Association’s Lancashire Tennis School of the Year for the second consecutive year, boasts a successful Tennis Academy which has seen increasing success under the directorship of former professional David Shaw and his team of coaches who have developed a cohort of national and regional players within the school. A video of Judy’s visit to Stonyhurst can be seen on: youtube.com

SUPPORT FOR YOUNG UKRAINIANS Rossall School forges ahead in terms of supporting young Ukrainians caught up in the current humanitarian crisis

R

ossall School has responded decisively and quickly to welcome at least six additional Ukrainian children to the school at the start of the summer term and this is one aspect of an extensive programme of support that includes a community hub. This enormous commitment is only possible due to the extraordinary generosity of a school community that has come together to actively respond to those in need. Current pupils are raising money to support relief operations in Ukraine itself whilst the wider Rossallian community has contributed to a fund established to support a small number of Ukrainian children for as long as is needed. The school has gone one step further by sponsoring a family from Kharkiv. Yuliia and her two sons Oleg, eight, and Volodymor, three, arrived at Manchester Airport recently where they were greeted by members of the school community, who have spent the last few days restoring a three-bedroomed property on the school site. Yuliia and her children have experienced

an incredibly difficult journey to get to the UK. Their ‘letters of permission’ took a little while to process, they then travelled to Ireland to stay with the Headmaster’s sister-in-law Caroline Dennehy, and her husband Tom, in County Cork. Within 24 hours of arriving, Tom was teaching the boys how to hold a hurley stick! They are among the very first families to arrive in the UK under the ‘Home for Ukraine’ scheme. In scenes reminiscent of TV’s DIY SOS

105

everyone pitched in to paint windows and plant the garden of the family’s new house. Others have donated toys, clothes and other household essentials. The school has been inundated with offers from suppliers, tradespeople and kind members of the public. Once Oleg and Volodymyr have settled into their new home, they will join Rossall Prep School and Nursery where they will receive one-to-one support as they begin to learn English. Other Ukrainian children will be welcomed into the school’s senior boarding community at the start of the summer term. They include children who contacted the school with requests for support and younger siblings or friends of Ukrainians who had previously attended the school. Headmaster Jeremy Quatermain, commented: “It is a privilege to lead a community that responds so compassionately to a crisis such as this.

“We have all pulled together to make this happen and, from our initial phone call with Yuliia, we knew that we had to do everything within our power to help her and the boys. “We are so fortunate to be able to help and I am so happy to be surrounded by colleagues, parents and pupils who all share our absolute determination to do something practical in response to the terrible and heart-breaking images that have flooded our screens in recent days. “We know that what we can accomplish is relatively modest in the grand scheme of things but amidst such tragedy, we hope that the Ukrainians we welcome into our community will feel Rossall’s love, kindness and compassion.” n

ALL TOGETHER NOW… Steeped in such fascinating and abundant history, Westholme School is driving towards a significant milestone in 2023 when it celebrates its centenary, writes Meena McDonald

S

tarting in 1923 when Emily Singleton set about providing a unique educational experience for all her pupils in a house called ‘Westholme’ on 167 Preston New Road in Blackburn, all the way through to becoming the highest achieving school in Lancashire in 2021, the visionary grit, determination and aspiration has been a defining characteristic of all Westholmian

boys and girls throughout the last century. Academic success in the classroom has always been a given, but the full educational philosophy of Westholme’s remarkable ethos is completely rooted in developing the whole child – inside and outside of the classroom. Over the years the school has experienced many advancements, ensuring it stays at the forefront of educational developments, investing in the facilities throughout the school. This was very apparent during the headship of Mrs Lillian Croston, the fourth principal who led the school for 25 years between 1988 and 2013. Her drive, passion and vision led to the development of a state-of-the-art science wing at the school providing students with

the opportunity to immerse themselves in the science laboratories and partake in exciting, informative and fun activities.

THE FULL EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF WESTHOLME’S REMARKABLE ETHOS IS COMPLETELY ROOTED IN DEVELOPING THE WHOLE CHILD The Sixth Form facilities were also the inspirational brainchild of Mrs Croston and this now houses the young adults who experience incomparable 1:1 support and guidance during every step of their Sixth Form journey. The Croston Theatre, named after Lillian Croston, who had the determination

education

107

and ambition to create such progressive performance facilities, is a true Westholme gem, encouraging students to build their confidence, team building and leadership skills through performance. These innovative investments all demonstrate that at the heart of Westholme’s holistic education, is the equal importance of every subject and activity. At Westholme, it is the wonderful balance of happy, fulfilled children, loving their time at a school that results in academic rigour and success. Inspiring teachers inculcate the acquisition of key skills within the curriculum, essential to the world of work, and do not become fixated on teaching to the test. The unique educational philosophy at Westholme deems this unnecessary and the proof is in the pudding – with their top echelon of incredible exam results.

THE WARMTH, FAMILY FEEL, ACADEMIC RIGOUR AND HOLISTIC BALANCE WILL ENABLE MANY MORE GENERATIONS OF WESTHOLMIANS TO THRIVE IN THE FUTURE In 2021, Dr Richard Robson joined Westholme as the school’s sixth principal. His vision is to build on the unrivalled holistic excellence set in motion 100 years ago, but also look to strengthen the allthrough nature of the school, particularly the impact of the Sixth Form, as the student leaders of the school. Today, the INSPIRED Sixth Form is an important raison d’être of Westholme, rooted in the acquisition of essential 21st century skills vital for the rapidly evolving modern workplace. Westholme’s young adults enjoy the independence to choose from a plethora of opportunities inside and outside the classroom. From September 2022, all students will be educated within the Wilmar Lodge campus on Meins Road following the construction of the new state-of-the-art Prep School to

house younger pupils aged four to 11. The excitement is building at Westholme as 2022 is a defining moment within the school’s history providing an all-through education for its four to 18 family on one site. This was the stated aim of Arthur Rouse, Westholme’s second principal, in that he wanted to bring the whole Westholme family together in one place. His vision comes to fruition with the completion of the brand new Prep School opening in September. This opening leads perfectly into the centenary celebrations in 2023, which will comprise a whole array of exciting activities, including: • Centenary Carnival 19th April 2023 • Centenary Ball 1st July 2023 • Centenary Party Night 2nd September 2023 • Centenary Fireworks Night 5th November 2023 • Centenary Carol Service 7th December 2023

WESTHOLME ANNUAL OPEN EVENING 6th October 2022

Looking ahead, the path is very clear for Westholme. A first-class education for all pupils aged four to 18, on the beautiful Wilmar Lodge campus on Meins Road, will continue to ensure that Westholme is the school of choice and the marketleader in Lancashire. There is a momentum and a constant drive to provide the very best state-of the-art facilities - never more evident than in the very recent multi-million pound building projects. The first 100 years has been an incredible journey for Westholme and they are fully committed to ensuring a further 100 years of unrivalled holistic excellence continues to benefit Blackburn. The warmth, family feel, academic rigour and holistic balance will enable many more generations of Westholmians to thrive in the future. n Too good to be true? BEST KEPT SECRET… Racing historic automobiles is a passion that led Tom Hardman to set up a unique business in the heart of the Ribble Valley countryside

Now married to Helen and with three young children, Tom recalls: “When we were deliberating whether to start the business, friends said ‘just do it’. So, we did!” Tom got his first historic car at 22 – a 1929 Austin 7 that he built into a racing ‘special’.

‘Just do it’.

A simple phrase that inspired and galvanised Tom Hardman to set up his historicautomobile business. Tom, who has raced vintage cars since he was a youngster, worked for a local car dealer in his 20s, but spent his spare time racing on famous circuits in the UK and Europe in his 1929 Austin 7. He left school with no qualifications due to dyslexia, but poured his energy into racing, meeting many influential enthusiasts who became friends and encouraged him to work for himself in the historic car business. In 2010 he made that leap of faith – fast forward 12 years and he has become one of the best kept secrets in the Ribble Valley, but with a generous, international following. Tom is still racing and now his Foxfields base, just outside Hurst Green, is bursting with iconic cars including a Bentley, Alvis, Aston Martin and Frazer Nash.

“It became a really fast car – in 2006 I did the hill in 48 seconds – anything under 50 for a 750cc Austin 7 is very quick.” While Tom’s racing continues, it’s not all been plain sailing. In 2007 at Cadwell Park, he suffered brake failure and the Austin rolled. The crash broke his shoulder and collar bone – and injured his right knee so badly that surgeons considered amputation.

IT’S AN INTEREST THAT KIDS AND PARENTS CAN ENJOY TOGETHER. THE CARS HAVE ENERGY AND CHILDREN LOVE THE POWER, THE VIBRATION, THE SMELLS

“I was determined to do the Prescott Hill Climb – but I didn’t have time to make a body, so I built one out of hardboard at the event. It was a sight. It was christened the B&Q special!

He recovered, and met his wife Helen in 2008. They rebuilt the Austin together but decided to sell it and find something bigger for Tom to use. Last year Tom did Prescott in 44.2 sec in a 1.5 litre 1937 single seater MG Bellevue with Brooklands history. His decision to set up in business followed a deal brokered by Tom between two friends for a Bugatti. “I brought them together and it sold – my commission cheque was a surprise” says Tom. “It paid for the wedding.”

motors

111

“That deal really sowed the seeds that Tom could do this,” recalls Helen. Having raced historic cars for so long, Tom had many contacts, so finding cars to sell was the easy part. Finding premises to showcase them proved more difficult. “Cars came from friends of friends. I owe much to those who supported me with advice but also helping me buy stock in the early days,” says Tom. “We know life is better together – and this value underpins our business. We love to support other businesses, near and far,” adds Tom, who eventually found a home for his automobiles in an old barn owned by a family friend. “Early on I sold a WO Bentley to a retail psychologist from the Czech Republic. While chatting, he taught me something important. We were talking about the barn and he said, ‘Make it homely and people will feel relaxed. That’s when they buy. Simple as that.”

I KNOW FROM MY OWN LIFE IT’S MORE OF AN INVESTMENT IN YOURSELF AND THE ENJOYMENT YOU GET OUT OF IT Today the barn is a far cry from the place it once was. Not only does it showcase around 18 stunning historic cars from 1905 through to the 1960s, it also features a farmhouse kitchen with sofas and wood burning stove. It’s a place where customers enjoy fresh coffee or lunch while discussing the cars they love. Helen explains: “We serve homemade soup and have a good chat. Tom doesn’t like the term ‘dealer’ – he’s a facilitator really. If people aren’t going to buy a car that day,

it’s no problem. It’s about getting to know each other and the cars, which all have a story behind them, and it’s about finding the next chapter. “Both the cars and people have fascinating stories behind them – that’s what it’s all about.” While Tom and Helen have a burgeoning business and growing family, they are passionate about cars being central to both: “I never advise buying a car just as a financial investment – I know from my own life it’s more of an investment in yourself and the enjoyment you get out of it,” says Tom. “It’s also an investment in family too,” adds Helen. “It’s an interest that kids and parents can enjoy together. The cars have energy

and children love the power, the vibration, the smells – it’s sensory and hands-on. These cars create lasting memories – we love to see young people engaged and involved. In the digital world, analogue is increasingly a great attraction to young and old alike. n

SHEER ENJOYMENT Looking smart and sounding wonderful, the new BMW Series 2 Coupé, is very desirable – and it’s quick too, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Andy Tighe

W

e live in a demanding and often unforgiving world. A lot of what we do, say, wear, watch, eat, visit (you get the drift) is analysed and critiqued to the nth degree. A world – dominated by social platforms – in which it takes a nanosecond for something to go viral (popular in old money) or slip into the abyss never to be seen or heard of again. So, just imagine the anticipation among the Bowker sales team when a new BMW model is announced. And the model under scrutiny here, the new 2 Series Coupé, is every bit deserving of the world-famous badge. Since its launch in March, industry reaction has been better than good and it’s easy to see why.

The 220i (four cylinder) option I took for a spin is a very desirable motor indeed – a coupé that will appeal to traditionalists and modernists alike. A treat for the senses in that it looks smart and sounds wonderful, it’s compact yet plenty roomy enough and nippy. No, not nippy, quick (0-62mph in 7.2 seconds with the very powerful, six-cylinder M240i xDrive managing it in 4.3 seconds).

IT’S GOT PUNCH AND FINESSE IN EQUAL MEASURES, PROVIDING AN EXHILARATING EXPERIENCE SUPPORTED BY SOUND PRACTICALITY But don’t worry that trips to the filling station will become more frequent as a consequence. The fuel economy is pretty impressive too with petrol engines delivering up to 44.1 mpg and diesel up to 60.1 mpg. Especially economical given the high level of performance on offer. Despite a rather athletic appearance – one

specialist reviewer christened it ‘a little tearaway’ – it would be incorrect to call the BMW 2 Series Coupé an out-and-out sports car, but it is in every sense a sporting car. It’s got punch and finesse in equal measures, providing an exhilarating experience supported by sound practicality. Scores well on safety too with Euro NCAP, the European authority that tests the safety performance of cars, giving it a four-star rating.

BUT DON’T WORRY THAT TRIPS TO THE FILLING STATION WILL BECOME MORE FREQUENT AS A CONSEQUENCE. THE FUEL ECONOMY IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE

Amongst a host of design and standard features come 18” M Double-spoke alloy wheels, LED headlights, high-gloss black interior trim, M Sports steering, M Sport body-styling and a striking kidney grille in high-gloss chrome. The range-topping M240i xDrive (pictured here in Brooklyn Grey) offers a high level of standard equipment that takes this exciting new coupé to the next level – luxurious

contrast stitching, Active Guard Plus with city braking system and speed limitation, ambient lighting in six colours, M Sport leather steering wheel and 40:20:40 through-loading system. Much to like, but what particularly impressed was the uncomplicated nature of the car – straightforward to navigate in terms of both the actual drive and the instruments and gadgets. Don’t misunderstand, everything the modern motorist could possible want is right there, but it is incredibly easy to find and to use, which allows you to focus on the sheer enjoyment of getting from A to B in style and comfort. So, back to this fast-moving world where we demand so much and are quick to judge, is the BMW 2 Series Coupé a hit and should you buy one? Yes, is the answer to both. It was interesting to hear the view of Domagoj Dukec, the Head of BMW Design: “For me, the BMW 2 Series Coupé is the embodiment of classic BMW driving pleasure: compact, BMW typical proportions and a wide stance on the street at first glance. Driving the new BMW 2 Series Coupé is a lot of fun.” A simple assessment. Impossible to disagree. n Bowker BMW Trident Park, Trident Way, Blackburn BB1 3NU 01254 274444 bowkermotorgroup.co.uk @BowkerBMW @BowkerMotorGroup BowkerMotorGroup TM

helping others to achieve their maximum potential in both sport and education. According to his daughter Barbara, now Head of Sport at BBC TV, they were a poor, working class family and he had to walk a mile to school and back, often in clogs because there was no money for shoes. His mother worked in the mill and he had to leave school at the statutory minimum age of 15, because the family needed extra income. Consequently, he started to work at the Williams Deacon’s Bank in Blackpool, his chances of improving his education seemingly minimal. He attracted the attention of Blackpool FC in 1944, making his first team debut in 1949 as an amateur. Fortunately, the post-war government wanted to encourage young people back into education and he enrolled as a student at Carnegie College, the renowned PE teaching facility in Leeds.

ONE OF OURS Clitheroe-born Bill Slater was the last amateur footballer to play in an FA Cup final. He went on to be selected for England more than 20 times and also captained Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1960 FA Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers, writes Michael J Hodkinson

B

ack in the 1930s, entrance to a grammar school was either by passing a scholarship examination or by fee paying, with a number at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School from moneyed families. One such boy, definitely from the first category, was William J Slater, who enrolled at the school at the age of 11 in 1938.

Born in Clitheroe, he lived down the road in Waddington. He was academically bright and outstanding athletically, captaining the school cricket team and gaining selection to the 1st XI football team alongside boys who were up to three years older than himself. He also gained the Headmaster’s Prize for Public Spirited Service, a sure sign that later down the line, he would spend time

BILL WAS A MAN OF MULTIPLE TALENTS, INTEGRITY, WISDOM AND STYLE His opportunities to play regularly for the seaside club were extremely limited, but in 1951, Allan Brown broke his leg and Bill Slater was thrust into the starting 11 at Wembley. He was the last amateur player to take part in an FA Cup final. Alongside him were legends of the game, Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen. They were paid but for young Bill, nothing except the honour of playing in the game that Newcastle United won 2-0. By this stage he had been selected 20 times for

England at amateur level and was an Olympian, representing Great Britain at the 1952 Helsinki Games. He was then appointed to a PE teaching post at Birmingham University and he made an appointment to see Stan Cullis, the famed manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers – then England’s foremost club. “Just give me a game please, I’m not bothered about the level, I just need to play,” was the gist of his request. Cullis, never slow to look a gift horse in the mouth, immediately signed him as an amateur. The occasional international cap followed and he was first choice in the formidable Wolves half back line. He was now married to Marion with the first of their four children on the way. He worked full time, squeezing training into any spare moment and if he could be suitably persuasive, his employer would give him an afternoon off occasionally to enable him to make it to away midweek games. For a game at Sheffield United, Cullis arranged him a lift but it turned up at the wrong address so he hitch hiked to Sheffield. Another time he was in danger of being late for a match. However the bus driver recognised him, taking short cuts to enable him to arrive on time. He was an international footballer, playing in the world’s strongest league and his only football remuneration was a free turkey at Christmas.

HE WAS RECALLED TO THE ENGLAND TEAM FOR THE 1958 WORLD CUP IN SWEDEN, HELPING TO SUBDUE THE LEGENDARY PELÉ AS ENGLAND DREW 0-0 WITH BRAZIL He was recalled to the England team for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, helping to subdue the legendary Pelé as England drew 0-0 with Brazil. Now part-time professional, he captained Wolves in the

1960 FA Cup Final against Blackburn Rovers. There, to the chagrin of many around here, the Clitheroe boy held the cup after a humiliating 90 minutes for the Blues. The same season, he was voted Footballer of the Year before retiring in 1963. He then showed his academic prowess, rising to the post of Director of PE at both Liverpool and Birmingham Universities. His daughter Barbara represented Great Britain as a gymnast in the Montreal Olympics of 1976. Meanwhile, because her father had coached her, he became so totally immersed in the organisation of the sport nationally that he was elected to the post of President of the British Gymnastics Association, holding the position for 10 years. He was awarded the OBE for his Services to Sport in 1982 and a CBE in 1998. In 2018, on his death at the age of 91, the Gymnastics Association said: “Bill was a man of multiple talents, integrity, wisdom and style.” Part of the Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Museum is dedicated to him in a city where he is remembered with great fondness. And those of us from the Ribble Valley need to know about one of our own, who set such high standards of decency, humility and supreme sportsmanship coupled with service to so many others. n

BOWLAND IS BUZZING Inspired by the wildlife and moorlands of Bowland, the cask beers crafted by artisans in the heart of Clitheroe, are world-renowned

W

e all know that we live in a little part of England that is well known for its stunning rural location – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) featuring 300 square miles of wild, upland landscape. However, lovers of craft beer have come to know the Ribble Valley AONB in a different context – a place where Ales of Outstanding Natural Beauty are lovingly crafted and nurtured by Andrew Warburton,

who has been at the helm of Bowland Brewery for the past eight years. With ‘outstanding’ being a key word at the micro-brewery, Drew and his small team are passionate about the ingredients and traditional methods used in producing their award-winning cask ales. Bowland’s Pheasant Plucker, which features British hops, will represent the North West at London’s Olympia next year after winning a gold award in CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain 2022 – a huge accolade for a small brewery that started life in a tiny milking parlour at Bashall Barn on the edge of the Forest of Bowland. The brewery, which was then a one-man band, was already supplying the Emporium in Clitheroe and the Lower Buck in Waddington, which Drew was running at the time: “We knew the owner and the

brewery was his baby – so when it became available we knew we had to have it. “At the time micro-breweries were unheard of – Bowland Brewery was a real one-off and when we got it, it was a steep learning curve. Once we had acquired the brewery, we needed to find a bigger home for it,” recalls Drew, whose brother James has the James’ Places group of country inns, bars and restaurants. “James said to me, ‘I’ve found the perfect place for the brewery’. I think Holmes Mill had already been signed on the dotted line by then and when he took me there to show me what he had in mind I really thought he had lost the plot – it was enormous!” Initially the brewery was housed temporarily in what is now the Food Hall at Holmes Mill: “We had to have all the kit made to measure,” explains Drew.

food&drink

The ‘kit’ included huge 30-barrel brushed stainless steel hot and cold liquor (water) tanks, a mash tun (that turns the liquor to ‘wort’) and eight fermentation tanks. “It was very much a case of learning on the job but I was lucky to inherit Scott and the small team, so I learnt everything from them.” Today Bowland beer is brewed beneath the iconic chimney at Holmes Mill, behind the Beer Hall which features one of the longest bars in the country. Visitors to the Beer Hall can see the dedicated team of artisans crafting the cask beers and the gleaming fermentation tanks – each named after famous Bowland fells including Parlick, Easington and Fellsnape. Bowland Brewey has a stable of core beers, introduces seasonal beers throughout the year and occasional ‘one-offs’ – which will include a Jubilee edition this summer. Quirkily named and branded, the core line-up has a recent new addition following fantastic feedback from buyers and customers – Bowland Bumble – a 4% ABV blonde, lightly-hopped ale that started out as one of Bowland Brewery’s seasonal ales back in 2018. Having been recently introduced to a bee-keeping couple from Rimington, Bowland

Brewery now has its own beehive just six miles from Holmes Mill, that will produce the honey that goes into brewing Bumble. “We have always used locally sourced honey to create Bowland Bumble Honey Beer but we felt that it was a great way for us to support the bee population by having our own hive.

THE FLAVOURS COME BACK WITH THE BEE AND EVENTUALLY MAKE THEIR WAY INTO THE HONEY, CREATING A UNIQUE FLAVOUR PROFILE FOR OUR BEER “We’re working with a local farm, who will keep our bees and help us to harvest the honey. We thought it would be fantastic also to have a webcam so people can see the honey being made and harvested. “The bees will travel throughout the Forest of Bowland and beyond, pollinating flowers, fruits and vegetables as they go. The flavours come back with the bee and eventually make their way into the honey, creating a unique flavour profile for our beer. “We have always been inspired by this area of Bowland when creating our beers and we are passionate about supporting

119

this stunning landscape, so introducing our own beehives is a natural choice. It really fits with our story.” Bowland Bumble now sits alongside award-winning Pheasant Plucker and other core beers that include Bowland’s flagship Hen Harrier, Boxer Blonde, Bowland Gold, Buster IPA and Deer Stalker – each having been inspired by the wildlife of Bowland, yet each having their own distinctive identity. Artists Clare Brownlow and Sophie Jordan have both helped captivate the wildlife in their unique styles to develop recognisable branding within the core range. When Andrew started out on his Bowland Brewery journey little did he know it would lead him to producing world-class cask ales that are widely recognised and sought-after: “We are very lucky to be in such a fabulous location. When we set out, we knew everything had to be just right – no half measures – and it has worked. We have just had our busiest month ever!” n

food&drink CELEBRATE THE PLATINUM JUBILEE AT THE BLACK BULL 3rd-5th June 2022 Celebrate with the most glorious of garden parties! All weekend: Cream teas, Jubilee cocktails and special dishes. Plus, the launch of the very special Garden Menu! Friday 3rd June MIRANDA MYLES: sings a sundown set in the garden from 6pm-8pm. Sunday 5th June The best roast dinner in the Ribble Valley! Reservations essential.

LET’S GO AL FRESCO! With its magnificent outdoor stretch tent, twinkling lights and a new pizza oven, the Black Bull is the perfect place to enjoy great food in beautiful surroundings

A

s we move slowly towards balmy, long summer evenings, lighter nights and late sunshine I can only suggest that the Black Bull at Old Langho is going to be the place to be. The investment made in the pub has resulted in the most amazing outdoor space and yes, you’ve guessed it – Becky and Jamie Govier continue to innovate and improve the facilities even further. The latest addition is a fantastic pizza oven resulting in a more casual offering of great pizza, served quickly but with no compromise. Can you imagine a cold beer or a glass of rosé with a slice of wood-fired

pizza? A great way to wind down any evening after work or perhaps a lazy weekend afternoon with family and friends. They’ve also recently trialled a burger van – as you can imagine it was a huge hit and I’m told a selection of ‘dirty burgers’ will soon be on the main menu and available both outside and in. The vibe at the Black Bull is second to none and we know this isn’t a fluke or left to chance. Becky and her super team are there to enhance the experience – enthusiastic, passionate and attentive and with over 100 covers outside, it’s quite an atmosphere and welcoming to all.

Just to be clear it’s not just pizza and burgers outside – good as they are, the full a la carte menu is also available for those who love the al fresco way of life. Let’s also not forget the signature Sunday lunch, which is superb and incredibly popular. As the evening descends and dappled light follows, the garden comes into its own. By day the views across the Ribble Valley are magnificent and as dusk falls, twinkling lights, live music and a selection of hand-crafted cocktails make the outside space come alive with a laid-back

atmosphere. It’s hard to imagine anywhere nicer to relax, kick back and enjoy great food and a tipple of your choice. The Black Bull remains open seven days a week, testimony to the fact that Becky wants to offer a full menu to a host of different clientele. If you want a quieter time to visit, then early week lunchtime is the time to go – both outside and inside offer the full menu meaning something for everyone. Look out on social media for all the latest additions and events – please support Becky and Jamie as they continue to deliver a quite remarkable level of food and service in such wonderful surroundings. n

WINNING FORMULA Holmes Mill in Clitheroe is a firm favourite for both locals and visitors, it really has something for everyone, writes Liz Walmsley

F

or some, it’s the Bowland Beer Hall with its amazing bar (famed for being one of the longest bars in Britain) with 42 hand pulls and a minimum of 24 individual cask beers at any one time. For others, it’s the fabulous Food Hall with its amazing selection of fine food and drink from Bowland, Lancashire and further afield, all brought together under one roof. For me, it’s the Bistro Bar & Grill. Admittedly, it’s been a while since I last

visited but co-incidentally it was with the same friend I visited with this time around. In many ways not much had changed, the same warm welcome on arrival and lots of room to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail in, comfy leather sofas and a huge bar – why change a winning formula? If you’ve never

visited the bistro, the old mill has been carefully and sympathetically renovated to create a large bar and dining area from the original industrial structure but with

MY ONLY REGRET? LEAVING IT SO LONG BETWEEN VISITS a ‘palm court’ feel to it. There is a huge grand piano, art deco style lighting, parquet floors, plush velvets and drapes – industrial and decadent in style, thrown together seamlessly, to create a unique and welcoming environment. I was the designated driver for the evening and Trina didn’t need much encouragement to order one of her alltime favourites – a Pacific Pornstar, which she declared to be the best she’d ever had!

food&drink

There was also a great choice of mocktails for the abstemious amongst us but having seen the menu and the wine list, I decided to save myself for a glass of wine for the main event. Praise should be given to Roxanna, who with the patience of a saint, managed to get our order at the third attempt – primarily as we were catching up on the last six months and secondly, we were a bit blown away by the choice. We decided to skip the nibbles and go straight to the starters. For Trina, the pork and lobster wantons (which would also have been my first choice) but on the basis that she agreed to share, I went for a simple heritage tomato salad with smoked goats curd and crispy croutons. Both were delicious.

WITH A HUGE GRAND PIANO, ART DECO STYLE LIGHTING, PARQUET FLOORS AND PLUSH VELVETS – THIS IS INDUSTRIAL AND DECADENT IN STYLE, THROWN TOGETHER SEAMLESSLY admit looked delicious. It’s all about the cooking with something as simple as steak and it arrived bang on brief – medium rare. Sides of rustic chips, portobello mushrooms and blistered tomatoes were the perfect accompaniment. As a rule, I’d never normally have three courses, but the cardamon crème brulee was a must for me and I’m glad I made an exception to the rule, it was silky smooth

WATCH THIS SPACE… • Early Bird Menu is served Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday between 5pm-7pm and offers a 3-3-3 menu 2 courses £19.95 and 3 courses £24.95 I was torn when choosing my main course. I always tend to order something I would not normally have at home so as a real fish fan, I opted for the tandoori spiced whole bream, which was beautifully presented, piping hot, cooked beautifully and accompanied with Bombay potatoes. Trina, a true carnivore (and married to a vegetarian) went for a simple 8oz, 40-day dry-aged rib-eye steak which I have to

and totally delicious. For Trina it was the coconut panna cotta with honeycomb and rum prunes, which also seemed to hit the spot!

This is a great menu offering a variety of more robust mains alongside a wide selection of lighter options as well as vegetarian and gluten free dishes. Quality food in beautiful surroundings at little more than pub food prices, makes the Bistro Bar & Grill one to add to your list. Also worth mentioning is the wine list, reasonably priced with a selection of wines by the glass, and judging by the steady stream of customers while we were there, it seems that the Bistro Bar & Grill wasn’t just a hit with us. My only regret? Leaving it so long between visits. n

Canal was constructed nearby. It has long been a haven for walkers and those passing through on the canal but now attracts more customers, both local and from further afield, to enjoy the fabulous food (recently highly rated by the Food Standards Agency) and wonderful ambience created both inside and out: “The Anchor Inn has such a rich history,” Lee adds. “It used to be called The Travellers Rest and is famous for the spectacular display of stalagmites and stalactites that have formed over the centuries in the cellar vaults.”

S

itting idyllically by the LeedsLiverpool canal in Salterforth, The Anchor Inn has been at the centre of the community for many years and with a roaring log fire, real ales, great gins and fabulous food it is easy to see why. Having been taken over by Lee Hughes just prior to lockdown it was a quick turnaround to assemble a huge tepee to allow outside socialising and dining, and this continues to be the perfect outside space: “The tepee at The Anchor Inn is stunning,” says Lee. “It’s ideal for country dining and the perfect spot for lazy afternoons or an evening of alfresco cocktails.” The tepee has been a fantastic addition to The Anchor Inn and can also be hired for team meetings, business lunches (a projector and screen are available) or for family get togethers and special occasions. The pub dates back to 1655 and was rebuilt in 1795 when the Leeds-Liverpool

THE TEPEE AT THE ANCHOR INN IS STUNNING. IT’S IDEAL FOR COUNTRY DINING AND THE PERFECT SPOT FOR LAZY AFTERNOONS OR AN EVENING OF ALFRESCO COCKTAILS

At the height of the pandemic Lee and his team were keen to support the community. They delivered over 200 children’s free packed lunches in the first week when schools were re-opening, as it was very obviously an anxious time for many: “Being supportive to local families was important to us. We have a strong ethos of putting the health and wellbeing of our staff at the heart of our business,” Lee says. “This extends to our customers and to the local community.” Like its partner pub The White Bull at Gisburn, a ‘Bottomless Brunch’ and fabulous afternoon teas will be on offer during the Jubilee Bank Holiday. If you are taking a stroll along the canal, want to enjoy the Jubilee celebrations or just want to relax in the long summer evenings in the perfect spot, then The Anchor Inn is looking forward to welcoming you soon. n

CONTEMPORARY CLASSICS If ever there was a more elegant transformation, look no further than Ye Horns Inn at Goosnargh. Photography: Allen Markey

F

rom its leafy, country-lane frontage, Ye Horns Inn appears to be a delightfully, traditional English country pub. But take a further look and to the rear, the inn has been beautifully extended with an outdoor terrace, a glass and timber orangery-style bar and casual dining area that leads to a stunning main dining room, The Barn, with its high ceiling, contemporary pendant lighting and huge stone fireplace.

At Ye Horns Inn, diners have the best of both worlds. If you prefer a country pub atmosphere you will find it in the beautifully refurbished original bar where there are smaller, intimate rooms where locals can enjoy a get together over a beer and bar snacks – a tasty Scotch egg perhaps or mac and cheese croquettes with chive mayo – simply delicious! At the helm of Ye Horns Inn is chef patron Sean Wrest. With his impeccable career credentials, Sean is renowned for his contemporary take on what are essentially great classics, using Michelin-star techniques

to produce modern British food that is ultimately delicious. Take Ye Horns’ halibut tempura – which is made super-light using an espuma gun to aerate the batter. The fish is served with triple cooked chips and a delightfully delicate pea puree – elevating a classic dish into the realms of the sublime.

Wenslydale and went on to complete an internship at the Fat Duck at Bray, Heston Blumenthal’s three-Michelin star restaurant. After moving back north he worked at Yorebridge House in the Dales, before a move to the chic, fine-dining Maaemo, Oslo.

Following time working as sous chef at Tommy Banks’ Michelin-starred restaurant The Black Swan, he went on to become head chef at Banks’ York restaurant, Roots, which went on to be awarded a Michelin-star. With locality and seasonality at its heart, the menu at Ye Horns Inn has been crafted by Sean and head chef Tony Bee, who trained under Gordon Ramsey. “We have some great local producers on our doorstep,” says Sean. “It’s a really exciting time for us at Ye Horns Inn.” n

SEAN IS RENOWNED FOR HIS CONTEMPORARY TAKE ON GREAT CLASSICS, USING MICHELIN-STAR TECHNIQUES TO PRODUCE MODERN BRITISH FOOD THAT IS ULTIMATELY DELICIOUS Similarly, Sean’s take on trifle comes in the form of a stunning, layered Opera cake: “As soon as you taste it you know it has all the fresh flavours of a classic trifle,” says Sean, who started out his career in

Wild rabbit ragu

SIMPLY STUNNING Tedd Walmsley savours a great value, midweek lunch at the Freemasons, which continues to present faultless, award-winning dishes

I

think quality and value have never been more important than right now. I know customers recognise the challenges that hospitality faces and understand that price increases are inevitable. It would be very easy to cut corners, whether that’s on portion sizes, cheaper cuts of meat or inferior ingredients but the team at the Freemasons are very proud to say that this certainly doesn’t apply to them. More than ever, they recognise that the whole experience has got to be spot-on. Steve Smith often refers to the set lunch and early supper menu as one of the best value meals in the Ribble Valley and I for one can testify to that. Quite often a 3-3-3 menu can be disappointing and offer limited choice, but the current menu suggests I could have eaten any one of the choices of all three courses. Whilst we waited for our starters, we were tempted with morsels of salmon and the most incredibly delicious, spiced broth and, of course, the signature bread and butter.

For some, a meal in itself, but a great way to start a leisurely lunch. In the end I chose a perfectly balanced ragu which was deep, rich and flavoursome with a beetroot rigatoni and finished with a crunch of nuts and aged parmesan. Next up was a perfectly cooked fillet of Whitby cod sitting on a crispy layered base of potatoes and vegetables – I must confess to asking chef for a portion of triple cooked chips to share with my friend, who agreed that this indeed was very special. Pudding choices were both sweet and decadent but also light and the perfect

way to end a very enjoyable lunch. All this for £32.50 per head – surely some mistake? No, a veritable feast that doesn’t feel ridiculous mid-week and one that’s also available Friday and Saturday as an early tea. We know that the Freemasons is however, so much more than the early-bird luncheon and has an array of a la carte dishes which are simply sublime. Using the very best of our local seasonal larder and combining it with a well-researched broader group of world-class ingredients, produces stunning results. Each dish hand-crafted with love and passion for you to enjoy.

To remind you there is always something for everyone at the Freemasons in terms of budget and appetite. Sunday lunch remains a great British tradition and very much so in the Ribble Valley and with service running from noon through to 6pm, the pub is the perfect spot to finish your weekend with family and friends. The menu is packed with succulent roasts and lighter fish options all sitting alongside perfect accompaniments. Starters and puddings look incredible too, varied as well as many alltime classics. Take your time, kick back and enjoy this feast on the day of rest. As we move toward the end of spring and into summer, the Freemasons plays host to a great selection of collaborative evenings. These nights allow the creative juices to flow with Steven and the team entwined with great guest chefs offering a different look and taste to the normal menu. The events are always popular and get booked up well in advance, so it’s best to secure tables early to avoid disappointment, especially for larger parties. Finally look out on social media for the extra Bank Holiday weekends and special menus to celebrate the Jubilee, Father’s Day and so much more. n

GOOD READ We take a look at a recently launched hardback that is essentially a beginner’s guide to detailing and car care

HAND WASH ONLY Bert Youell Car enthusiasts all over the world know that washing their vehicle by hand is the best way to keep it looking its best. In recent times ‘detailing’ has become the buzz word in the world of car washing – a term that describes car care best practice. Now a new book seeks to demystify the processes offering an essential guide for any car lover. Hand Wash Only is a comprehensive 144-page hardback offering expert insight into detailing and car care – it is an ideal companion for the enthusiast, beginner or experienced detailer. Written by Bert Youell and edited by Ian Sealey of PRO Detailer Magazine, Hand Wash Only provides an answer to the question of how the term ‘detailing’ first entered the automotive vernacular in the mid-2000s and offers an easy-to-understand explanation into the equipment and products used, and every stage of the various processes involved. Speaking about the book, Youell says: “I wanted to put together a book that brought professional detailing techniques to the home enthusiast, allowing normal people to look after their own cars using the techniques of the professionals.

“With so much unaudited information available online, we were keen to put something together that is both authoritative and unbiased, while retaining the accessibility and fun-factor of what has come before.” With essential kit in hand, readers are guided through each important stage of detailing, from the wash process as a whole to the finer points of decontamination, paint polishing, paint protection, interior cleaning and anything else designed to make a car look great. Illustrated with hundreds of images and explained in clear language, Hand Wash Only attempts to turn any car enthusiast into an expert detailer dedicated to keeping their vehicle looking its absolute best. Via expert step-by-step guides and top tips readers will be armed with the knowledge they need to master the dark art of detailing and once they have done so this book will continue to serve as vital reference material for the future.

The collective compilation of a new book of walks, featuring rambles from a small Ribble Valley village, has an inspirational story behind it

A

book of walks, which was created when, across the country people began walking around their local countryside with one permitted person, has sold more than 500 copies thanks to its appealing illustrations and interesting routes. Walks from a Lancashire Village has been collectively compiled by Ruth Buckley and a group of walkers from Grimsargh, for whom walking has proved a vital lifeline. Author Ruth explains: “Walking has proved a lifeline for many of us, myself included, having been bereaved in December 2019. I was asked to compile a book of the walks by my walking buddies, as I like to call them.” With the approval of Grimsargh Parish council the walking group had 200 personalised waymarkers made, then gained permission from Lancashire County Council, local farmers and landowners, to put them up.

GALLERY CELEBRATES such as Doug Hyde, Kerry Darlington, Leigh Lambert, Andrei Protsouk and Steve Townsend will always have a presence,” says Nick. “There is always great excitement around the new collections from the art world’s leading lights.”

Nick Smith and Sophie Hart are celebrating their first year at the helm of Longridge Gallery that has introduced new talent to the region

A

s the country prepares to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign on the throne, a smaller celebration will be marked in the Ribble Valley. It is one year since Nick Smith and Sophie Hart took over Longridge Gallery. As the country emerged from the Covid pandemic, Nick and Sophie returned to their roots in the Ribble Valley. The gallery, based on Berry Lane in Longridge, has now been in family ownership for 22 years. In the 12 months since Nick and Sophie took over, the couple have introduced new talent to the already-strong portfolio of artists represented. Notable successes include John Russell, Dan Pearce, Scott Tetlow, Chuck and Stephen Graham, as well as local star Anthony Platt. “Of course, long-standing gallery favourites

THE CREATIVE TALENT IN THE UK IS PROVIDING GREAT RETURNS FOR BOTH INVESTORS AND THOSE WHO SIMPLY WANT SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL AND INTERESTING ON THEIR WALLS “We’ve loved building relationships with gallery customers, existing and new. Getting to know their own stories and how we can help enhance their own homes has been particularly rewarding,” adds Sophie.

The gallery’s framing service has continued to be in great demand. “In one year, we have seen a really broad range of work – from school and wedding photographs, artists’ own works, scores of needlework and sports memorabilia, including from the 2021 Paralympics, to a broken drum cymbal, horse show rosettes and Maundy money. We treat every piece with the utmost respect and the volume of repeat business is greatly appreciated,” states Nick. As the couple look forward to their own Ribble Valley wedding in August, year two in the gallery looks to be just as exciting. “The art market is really strong at present,” says Nick. “The creative talent in the UK is providing great returns for both investors and those who simply want something beautiful and interesting on their walls. Please call in and see the latest collections or visit our website.” n

MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE Using their extensive knowledge to create unique properties, ZMA has a proven track record in making clients’ dreams come true

Z

ara Moon Architects (ZMA) have become something of an enigma in the design world – making the seemingly impossible, possible, transforming sites and creating extraordinary living spaces. Working very differently from most architects, Zara and co-founder Paul Beneduce along with their creative and energetic young team, specialise in sensitive sites, working in minute detail to comply with all planning requirements in order to create stunning properties. ZMA’s number one priority is to get the design right first time in order to achieve the required result. Working with sites in green belt, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), conservation areas and open countryside, ZMA carry out in-depth research into the site history, location and site constraints in order to create inspired designs that maximise value and undoubtedly provide the wow-factor. “Your home is a representation of yourself,

we listen to what our clients want from their home, what makes them tick and how they want to live. We then translate this into their bespoke home tailored to their family’s specific needs, whilst responding to the site and planning policy,” says Zara.

TRANSFORMING SITES AND CREATING EXTRAORDINARY LIVING SPACES Ribble Valley-based ZMA recently scored a planning hat trick – within one month, obtaining permission from three different local authorities to build on three different sensitive sites. One of these sites is located in Chorley greenbelt: “There is currently a bungalow on the site and the house had reached its extension limitations for a greenbelt site. The best option to increase the size of the house, while still complying with greenbelt planning policy, was to completely replace it with a high quality, contemporary,

sustainable home. We basically transformed the volume of an average three-bedroom bungalow into a super home, maximising the available space and value of the site. “We are passionate about fulfilling our clients’ hopes and dreams through architecture and pride ourselves in thoughtful and considered designs which incorporate our clients’ hobbies, children, pets and lifestyles,” adds Paul. ZMA’s most luxurious homes have included wellness suites, outdoor kitchens, equestrian facilities, swimming pools, bowling alleys, cinema rooms, music studios, dog rooms, beauty rooms, yoga studios, indoor-outdoor courtyards and even an underground boxing ring. ZMA excel at finding solutions going above and beyond clients’ expectations in order to get the desired result. Currently working with 20 different local authorities on various projects, ZMA drills into the detail to ensure their planning applications meet all the exact requirements. “We often work on sites which others have deemed ‘impossible’. We love it when we make the impossible, possible,” says Zara. n
