Magazines Editor Spring is finally here and it’s a time for new things. New season, trends, fashion and homes to name a few. So, this issue is packed full of interesting articles to give you some ideas and inspiration for the months ahead. In our business hour feature we talk all things fashion by chatting to three alumni fashion students from the University of Central Lancashire on where they are now after graduating from the university and all in successful businesses. If you’re keen to keep up with the new trends on the high street, then our travel feature looks at visiting the four fashion cities of the world. London, Milan, New York and Paris are known as the global fashion capitals of the 21st century, but what is it that makes them the most popular places to visit on a city break? Did you know the likes of international renowned opera singer Alfie Boe started his singing career at Preston Opera? Preston Opera is an amateur opera company based in Preston, staging high quality performances of opera and operettas accompanied by the Preston Opera Orchestra. We chat to director and secretary, Diane Mackley about how the company started. With Easter approaching, we celebrate seasonal Herdwick Lamb. In season from January to June, its distinctive gamey flavour comes from the wild grass and forage the lambs eat on the Cumbrian hills. Treat yourself this Easter to a special Sunday lunch. We all know that when it comes to fashion, everyone wants to look good on the catwalk and on the camera, but how realistic is it for us to look picture perfect all the time and how good is it for our wellbeing? And speaking of fashion, we have six fabulous pages of colour casuals from the latest spring fashion, all from local outlets. Tracy Hargreaves Editor

operettas accompanied by the Preston Opera Orchestra. The company currently has around 60 active members, ranging from teenagers to those who would rather not say! The company rehearses every Thursday evening at Carey Baptist Centre, Pole Street, Preston city centre and new members are always welcome. Membership of this very friendly group of singers has grown extensively since those early days and the company is always keen to encourage young talented singers as well as members who are happy to help with costumes, front-of-house, backstage or in a non-singing role. There’s something for everyone!

ONE THING WE’VE DONE A LOT OF IN THE PAST IS TO FORM LINKS WITH COLLEGES SUCH AS THE ROYAL NORTHERN COLLEGE OF MUSIC IN MANCHESTER Up until 2003 there were two full-scale productions a year, however the company now just focuses on one, along with a number of concerts throughout the year. Diane Mackley is the director and secretary of Preston Opera. She says: “It was quite dramatic last year because the Charter Theatre, in Preston, where we were based, went into administration, just before we were due to perform Macbeth there. Fortunately, we were able to find another venue quickly which was Fulwood Academy, however a lot of adjustments to the staging had to be made. “Once everyone had got over the shock, the show went ahead. We weren’t going to

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS Did you know the likes of international renowned opera singer Alfie Boe started his singing career at Preston Opera?

P

reston Opera company was founded in 1965 and it was really the efforts of a handful of people led by a guy called Frank Salter, who was born and bred in Preston. He had experience in classical music and thought it was a shame that people couldn’t experience opera without having to go to London. He ran a local choir and he decided to form a company with a view to putting on a full-scale production, which was pretty

ambitious back then. He wanted opera to be accessible to everyone and provided audiences with the opportunity to see and be part of this most powerful of art forms. Today, Preston Opera has been sharing its passion for the moving sounds and sights of opera and operetta to the people of Lancashire for more than 50 years. Preston Opera is an amateur opera company based in Preston, staging high quality performances of opera and

localfocus let something like that ruin our show. “The key thing with Preston Opera is that we have our own orchestra which a lot of other societies don’t have,” she says. “One thing we’ve done a lot of in the past is to form links with colleges such as the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where we can offer their post grad students opportunities to add to their CV.”

WHEN WE PERFORM AN OPERA MORE THAN ONCE, IT WILL ALWAYS BE DIFFERENT In fact, a number of now famous professional singers started life off at Preston Opera. Frank Salter encouraged Alfie Boe to go to Preston Opera and Alfie even mentions the company in the first chapter of his autobiography. Locals, Amanda Roocroft and Jane Irwin, now both international opera singers, have also sung with Preston Opera in concert. The company is a registered charity and is run by volunteers with a committee of around 12 people. They ask their members what their top three operas they would like to see performed. “There’s quite a range,” adds Diane. “From the more popular ones to something we hadn’t thought about before.” This year it is Carmen which has been popular for a long time. Each committee member will have a specific role, whether its props or wardrobe and costumes. “Some of the costumes will be home grown,” said Diane. “We are very lucky in that we have a couple of ladies who are handy with a needle and thread. When we perform an opera more than once, it will always be different. This year I have updated it to the 1950s so it’s a chance to bring out some new costumes and a different look.” The singers are currently in rehearsals and people will be able to see performances of Carmen on 29th, 30th and 31st May at Fulwood Academy. Tickets are around £12 each and are available from prestonopera.org.uk. If you haven’t tried opera before then give it a go. Carmen is a wonderful production with amazing music. Alternatively, there will be a concert at Lancaster Priory in July with internationally renowned soprano Jane Irwin, who also has linked with Preston Opera. n Visit the website for a range of membership fees and for further information

Milly Green, Creative Director, said: “The BBC’s Planet Earth II series with Sir David Attenborough gave us the push we needed to totally rethink our products. We’re not saving the world but we’re trying to do our bit for the environment, from the materials we use in our products right through to the point of sale and delivery packaging.”

BATHROOM TRENDS With another decade of interior design behind us, bathrooms are suddenly set for a 2020 makeover

T

he minimalist designs of the past with handleless furniture and cool chrome fittings in the bathroom are set to give way to luxurious opulence with brass fittings and coloured porcelain taking centre stage. That’s not to say that we are turning our backs on the contemporary – 2020 will see bathroom technology coming to the fore.

BATHS

With freestanding bathtubs of all shapes and sizes continuing in popularity, the luxuriously deep slipper baths have become firm favourites. They provide support for the body and result in an exceptionally comfortable bathing experience. There are many freestanding styles – from the traditional to the ultra-modern.

BASINS

Set to become a lasting trend are double sink vanity units – these were once reserved for luxury hotels and stately homes but have become more affordable in recent years leading to a huge surge in popularity. Double sink vanities are beautiful and practical, and they can also provide a stunning focal point. Another big trend on the rise in traditional bathrooms are washstands, whether that’s old-fashioned Edwardian or inbuilt into a more modern unit, these can be real showstoppers.

While we have enjoyed two decades of clean, white ceramic in our bathrooms, coloured and floral patterns in sanitary ware will also make a comeback in 2020 enabling you to colour co-ordinate and create a soothing space in which to bathe.

SHOWERS

Moving on to showers and it’s easy to see why rainfall showers have really taking off. The wide surface of a rainfall shower head creates an unrivalled drenching effect but many are also incredibly water-efficient. Whether you choose to replace your entire shower or just opt for a new head, the rainfall shower continues to trend through 2020. Digital showers now offer more control than ever before – you can set your temperature to one that perfectly suits you and some even allow you to set the temperature before you step inside.

FITTINGS

The once-popular gold and brass finish that fell by the wayside in recent years is back with a bang! A much warmer alternative to chrome, brass detailing is a great way to give your bathroom a distinctive, luxurious and elegant style. Brass fittings maybe the ultimate in sophistication, but they can still be simple and minimalist in 2020. From taps to shower heads, all manner of brass and gold-coloured fittings are now readily available.

WALLPAPER

Wallpaper is another trend set to take over in the bathroom this year. Choose a striking print and keep baths and basins simple and the results will be stunning! Geometric designs will become more popular in 2020 and this will be reflected in both wallpaper designs and tiles.

ACCESSORIES

Mirrors can become a focal point in a bathroom – the bigger the better! Some even feature smart capabilities in the form of colour changing LEDs and Bluetooth speakers. Mirrors and other accessories like towel rails and soap holders should be chosen carefully to match taps and your chosen colours scheme. Just remember – in 2020 opulence and luxury are the key words when it comes bathrooms! n

Every window deserves to be beautifully dressed and this Preston company is more than committed to the cause, writes Kate Ford

A

s building styles develop and fashions in interior design change, so do the ways in which we dress our windows. The days of just drawing the curtains are gone, and people are turning to blinds and shutters to control light, create privacy and add colour to their living spaces. From the simplicity of roller and roman blinds to the contemporary style of venetians and shutters, there is something to suit every room. Being able to choose the right colour or fabric design to match your room means that blinds and shutters can be just as much a part of your décor as your floor covering and furniture. “I think it’s the versatility of blinds and shutters that really appeal to people,” says Ian Leather, owner of Hannan Blinds in Fulwood. “Whatever style of house, traditional or modern, we will have a window covering not just to suit it, but to create a real statement.” A well-established business with a history of almost 50 years, Hannan Blinds was started in 1972 by John Hannan and Ian joined him in 1999. When John retired in 2007, Ian bought the business from him and, from their busy showroom on Garstang Road, he and his team help customers from

the Preston area and beyond to transform their rooms with stylish, made-to-measure window accessories. There’s a dazzling display of choice on offer in the showroom where customers can browse fabrics and, more importantly, see the range of options available. “Blinds have changed so much in recent years, with venetians, shutters and the fabulously inventive ‘day and night’ blinds really increasing in popularity,” says Ian.

WE CAN ALWAYS FIND A SOLUTION FOR ANY WINDOW OR GLASS DOOR IN YOUR HOME “And, just as building trends change, so do our products, so we can always find a solution for any window or glass door in your home.” One example of this is the increasing use of bi-fold doors in buildings and home extensions. Hannan Blinds has the ideal solution in its ‘Perfect Fit’ blinds which sit seamlessly over the glass panels in a

BLIND VISIONS made-to-measure frame. The same product is also used to cover conservatory windows and roofs. Ian and team are happy to visit customers in their homes to advise and talk through the product range, and customers are welcome to visit the showroom at any time to talk through their requirements. Once they’ve made their choice, the measuring and installation service is included in the cost. “Jenny and Kim in the showroom are both very knowledgeable about our product range, so whether a customer wants to dress a single window or a whole house, they’ll be able to give friendly, expert advice,” says Ian. “We supply high quality products which are manufactured to last up to 20 years. I think I can say without hesitation that our customers will absolutely love the look of their windows which are dressed with our shutters and blinds.” n

INSTANT GARDENING What you plant in your garden can completely transform it, from a dull, overlooked space, to a private, colourful haven

N

eed an instant evergreen screen to block off an unsightly view or a pair of large topiary spirals to enhance your entrance? Then Newgate Nurseries Preston is the place to come. For years owner Michael Cookson has prided himself on the nurseries’ vast range of home-grown hardy plants which, they continue to grow today, however in recent years he has noticed a new demand. “With more and more houses being built, we are finding a huge demand for instant evergreen plants to disguise over-looking properties. We are also finding a greater demand for more established plants generally. Whilst Newgate Nurseries still grow most of its own plants on site, Michael has started sourcing extra-large specimens

from around Europe. “We source many of our instant hedging stock from Belgium and Holland, whilst all other specimens are grown in Tuscany.

I TRAVEL TO EUROPE TWICE A YEAR TO SELECT THE STOCK FOR THE SEASON AHEAD “I travel to Europe twice a year to select the stock for the season ahead. They specialise in growing large plants as they have more daylight hours and a longer growing season.” Newgate Nurseries is now bursting with stock for this spring, whether you want a 2.5m instant laurel hedge, some Tuscany topiary or just some instant colour! n newgatenurseries.co.uk

Farrow & Ball – Stiffkey Blue No.281

Colour expert Joa Studholme of Farrow & Ball has revealed how to create warm and inviting spaces that enrich the home this year

E

Farrow & Ball – Sap Green W56

mbracing the use of bolder and saturated colours in the home inspires relaxation and comfort. “The most important aspect of using colour in 2020 is to create spaces that are warm and welcoming for our friends and family – colours that make us feel proud of our homes,” explains Joa Studholme, Colour Curator at Farrow & Ball. “Strong colours suit rooms we use at the end of the day when we want to relax and be comforted. As we become increasingly environmentally aware, we crave a connection with the colours of nature, so deep Duck Green and earthy, organic Sap Green feel perfect for the home in 2020.” Duck Green is strong and subdued, but achingly fashionable. While having an air of nostalgia, it is the perfect contemporary alternative to charcoal in modern homes and is ideal to create spaces in which to curl up at the end of the day. Incredibly chic by day, and cosy by night, it brings a grounded but luxurious atmosphere to any room.

Try it with Light Gray on woodwork and Ash Grey on the ceiling for a truly timeless feel. Earthy Sap Green, which reflects the colour of nature, has an organic feel that creates the perfect welcoming start to the journey through your home, so is perfect in small intimate halls. The richness of this irresistible colour will make all the rooms off it look bigger and lighter, while bringing a little of the exterior inside. Use it with Setting Plaster and Hay to create a delightful mid-century modern feel.

“These are colours that anchor our homes, remind us of our childhoods and indeed are perfect for family life. They are traditional but with a twist.” Farrow & Ball is dedicated to creating richly pigmented paint and handcrafted wallpaper using only the finest quality ingredients. Deepening from subtle neutrals to dark inky blues, each paint shade is created with a blend of up to five pigments for an extraordinary depth of colour. Responding characterfully to all types of light, the varying undertones within every hue gently shift in light and shade to bring homes to life. From the signature chalky matt of Estate Emulsion to the durability of washable Modern Emulsion, Farrow & Ball’s distinctive palette is available in a full range of highperformance interior and exterior finishes. Based in Dorset, England since 1946, Farrow & Ball’s expert craftsmen combine traditional methods with contemporary technology to create richly pigmented paints and handcrafted wallpapers. With responsible practices, eco-friendly formulas and recyclable materials, Farrow & Ball is committed to reducing its impact on the earth without compromising on quality. n

traditional wooden looms also allows for the creation of wonderful textures such as Jacaranda’s brand new Jaspur and Jaisalmer pure wool designs. Jaisalmer is an unusual but subtle linear stripe only achievable by hand and Jaspur is a rich smooth velvet. Jaspur and Jaisalmer carpets bring warmth, texture and durability as well as bags of character, alongside a colour palette that spans across nine natural tones. Both are suitable for stairs and are heavy contract rated, so ideal for daily footfall. Both are stocked in 4m and 5m broadloom and rugs can be made-to-measure.

ool is an amazingly indulgent and relevant product for today’s flooring choices. Sheep grow new fleeces every year making wool renewable and recyclable, soft and warm but hard-wearing and naturally fire-retardant. With a high luxury and comfort level, deep, dense wool pile adds texture whilst insulating your home. Jacaranda make stunning soft wool carpets and recently launched their new Chatra & Chennai 100 per cent pure wool designs which are hand-woven on traditional wooden looms. Hand-weaving broadloom is a timeconsuming art that requires real skill at each stage. Each roll of Jacaranda handmade

carpet passes through at least 130 skilled hands, across 208 hours, over approximately 26 days. They all play their part in creating Jacaranda’s wonderful natural colour bank filled with unique textures and beautiful finishes.

The labour-intensive process allows for the creation of strikingly rich textures and lends itself to truly thick, chunky, characterful designs such as Chatra. Sheep grow fleeces in a wealth of natural shades and Chennai’s random tip-shear pattern is hand-woven from mainly undyed wool tones. The carpets in these ranges are available in 4m and 5m broadloom and you can also have elegant rugs made to fit whatever size you require for your home. This artisan practice of hand weaving on

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’ The start of a new spring season, usually means the start of a long list of jobs to do on the house and in the garden, writes Tracy Hargreaves

K

eeping on top of your home and garden on a regular basis, will not only retain your property’s value, but will make sure that small jobs such as leaks, cracks, peeling wallpaper, overgrown shrubs and broken fences don’t get worse the longer you leave them. Start by making a list of all the things that you think might need doing, room by room, inside and out and prioritise them. How big are the jobs? When was the last time you decorated in the room? Does it just need a touch up or a fullblown makeover? Are the jobs something you can do yourself, or are they bigger jobs where you need to get tradespeople in.

If so, you will need to plan ahead. Good tradespeople get booked up in advance. This might be an opportunity for you to save up, but also it means a delay in starting

the work and you might want to work on something else in the meantime. Once you’re happy with your internal list, move outside to the garden. If you have a broken fence or wall that you share with your neighbour, ask would they mind sharing the cost. They might even help you repair it, saving on getting someone in. Cut back any overgrown shrubs and give your lawn its first cut. Your garden will look better instantly. Have a blitz on those winter weeds and look at planting some spring hanging baskets, although be wary of those late frosts which can hang around until April/May. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on rotting soffits and gutters and any loose roof tiles and get them fixed while the weather is good. Are your windows and doors secure? It’s always nice to drive up to a house that looks well looked after. Does it need a lick of paint outside? A good driveway can look amazing and add value to your property, but a welcome driveway sets the tone for the rest of your home so is worth the investment. Look at the different options available, from tarmac to gravel, brick to flags, block paving to asphalt and see which is more practical for you. So, get your DIY hat on and spring into action this season. n

olden Wood Antiques, a vibrant antiques centre situated close to Haslingden along the Grane Road, is the perfect place to take any items you have that you feel are particularly interesting. “We love the unusual and peculiar,” says owner John Ainscough. “We have a wonderful selection of antiques laid out across two floors and we’re always on the

look-out for new items to sell on.” Housed in a beautiful grade two listed church, it’s the perfect environment for a spot of antique hunting. Whether you’re buying or selling, a conversation with one of the centre’s antiques experts will not result in a wasted afternoon. “You never know what can hold value these days,” says John. “There is a huge demand for items with a connection to local history, old documents and industrial items – even old street signs. Not what you’d expect from the Antiques Roadshow of yesteryear.”

WE HAVE A WONDERFUL SELECTION OF ANTIQUES LAID OUT ACROSS TWO FLOORS AND WE’RE ALWAYS ON THE LOOK OUT FOR NEW ITEMS TO SELL ON Set within the stunning Lancashire countryside, overlooking moorland and reservoirs, the spacious two floors hold a mixture of open displays and closed cabinets. There are also several specialists on hand to give advice, in particular, books, clocks, military items, jewellery and furniture. “We have items from all eras and a huge variety of pieces for sale. Our stock is constantly changing so it is worth visiting us regularly if you’re looking for something in particular.” Holden Wood Antiques also has a traditional tea room connected to it, so visitors can take time during their visit, enjoying a look around, a spot of lunch and make a purchase or two from one of the most reputable antiques dealers in the region.

“The tea room is very popular, especially at weekends. Our menu includes a mix of light snacks, full meals and sumptuous freshly made desserts and cakes. Our staff are friendly, the atmosphere relaxed and we are dedicated to offering our customers a service that makes them return time and time again.” If you’re not too full after a spot of tea and cake, then there’s numerous beautiful walks right on the doorstep of this beautiful church. The Rossendale Shoe Trail is close by and is marked by large ceramic footwear designs, drawing on the area’s history with the shoe manufacturing industry and also celebrates the area’s brick making heritage. If you have anything you think may be of interest or value make sure you visit Holden Wood Antiques, you could be sitting on your very own pot of gold. n

POWER YOUR WAY TO A PERFECT LAWN There’s an ideal mower for every lawn and this family business can help you find your perfect match, writes Kate Ford. Photography: Roger Moore

T

he storms are hopefully behind us now and springtime is here. Much loved and anticipated by gardeners everywhere, this is the season when the garden comes back to life, the grass is growing, and the lawnmower is once again called into action. Calling into Mowerpower in St Annes recently, I noticed that amongst all the shiny new mowers and other garden machinery on display, were rows of lawnmowers waiting to be collected and returned to their owners. One of the many benefits of buying from this local, family business is the first class after-sales service. “We only sell machines which we know we can get all the spare parts for,” says David Webster, who runs the business alongside his parents, Lynn and Richard. “If a mower needs repairing or servicing, we’ll collect it from the customer and deliver it back again once the work has been done, usually within a week.

It’s all part of the service.” This commitment to customer service is what has kept the Websters’ business going for 72 years. This is a fourth-generation family business, started as it was by Richard’s father and grandfather in 1948. In addition to the original shop on Alexandria Drive in St Annes, Mowerpower has a large showroom on the A6 at Brock, between Preston and Garstang. They also have two workshops, in Blackpool and at Brock, where the services and repairs are carried out by five full-time mechanics. The workshop element of the business is crucial because the Websters know that if a customer chooses the right mower for their lawn, they can expect it to last up to 20 years. With such longevity, the repairs and servicing help to keep things running smoothly. The team regularly visit customers at home to view and assess their lawns.

These free, no obligation visits enable the Mowerpower team to recommend exactly the right mower, to suit both the lawn and the individual using it. Customers are then invited to the showroom to see the machines and get a feel for their size and weight.

IF A MOWER NEEDS REPAIRING OR SERVICING, WE’LL COLLECT IT FROM THE CUSTOMER AND DELIVER IT BACK AGAIN Both showrooms are bursting with every kind of quality garden machine imaginable, from Countax ride-on mowers to Stihl hedge trimmers. The business has approved retailer status with all the top manufactures of garden equipment, including Hayter, Mountfield, ATCO, Stiga, Toro, Echo and Masport. Alongside the gleaming, ride-on machines, they have walk-behind mowers in electric, petrol and cordless options. This year sees the arrival of the first battery-powered ride-on mower from Weibang. An impressive machine, which benefits from rack and pinion steering and can mow for around two and a half hours on a full charge, it provides an excellent alternative to petrol machines for larger lawns.

homesinsideout

43

Every manufacturer is now expanding their range of battery powered machines.” Another machine which is growing in popularity is the robotic lawn mower. The Websters have been selling these for around 20 years but demand has really taken off this year. “We’ve had four orders already this week alone,” says Lynn.

CUSTOMERS RECEIVE EXCELLENT ADVICE AND SOUND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE WHICH ENABLES THEM TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE

“We’ve been selling battery powered mowers for many years, but this is our first ride-on with a battery,” says Lynn Webster, who goes on to describe the growing demand for this kind of machine. “People now come in and ask us for battery powered mowers and other machinery, whereas in the past we had to tell them that these were available as an alternative to petrol and corded mowers.

“They’re such clever machines. Programme in details like the area of your lawn, which days and times you want it to be cut, and the robot will mow the grass for you.” Hand-held equipment at Mowerpower includes hedge cutters, strimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and pressure washers, again all from leading brands. There’s also a range of traditional garden tools and chemicals. As well as its loyal and ever-expanding domestic customer base, Mowerpower also supplies machinery and servicing to several commercial and community customers including schools, sport clubs,

churches, residential caravan parks and local authorities. Lynn is in no doubt about what keeps customers returning time and again. “It comes down to our very personal approach and the after sales service we offer. “Customers receive excellent advice and sound product knowledge which enables them to make the right choice and to buy a machine that will last a very long time.” n

QUALITY REMAINS…

…LONG AFTER THE PRICE HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN

E

xcellent quality and low price don’t always go hand in hand but to Creative UPVC the equation is a simple one. With so many happy customers telling – and showing – their friends what Stuart and his team have done for their homes, he has no need at all for a showroom so he can pass on the savings to his future customers and make them even happier. But when quality in home improvements goes far beyond what the eye can see, how can a homeowner know which company’s work performs as well as it looks? One good starting point is to choose a local company with an established reputation, advises Stuart, and he should know – he has been establishing his own reputation in and around Preston for over 15 years and is proud to say the majority of his work comes straight from the recommendation of past customers. “Any home improvement is a serious

When Stuart Hughes of Creative UPVC set up in business, his goal was to provide an excellent product with excellent service. But when most of his customers were coming from recommendation and therefore did not need to visit a showroom, he soon realised he could pass on unrivalled value as well investment, especially a conservatory or orangery,” says Stuart, “So people should really think seriously about who is going to design and install it. With a local company like ours, what people tell their friends

WITH A LOCAL COMPANY LIKE OURS, WHAT PEOPLE TELL THEIR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS ABOUT US IS VERY IMPORTANT, SO YOU KNOW WE ARE GOING TO DO OUR VERY BEST

and neighbours about us is very important so you know we are going to do our very best for every single customer. In the February issue, one couple, homeowners Janette and Steve Jackson, told how they chose Creative specifically on first impressions from meeting Stuart, but they had gained a very different impression from some of the other companies they had contracted. The result was a superb orangery including kitchen and extra living space, replacing a small and outdated conservatory. Another result however was that all the Jacksons’ friends now know just where to

homesinsideout

go when they want any home improvements of their own. It is testimonials like these, as well as a listing on sites like Lancashire County Trading Standards’ Safe Trader register, that have led Creative to be called on for more and more orangeries, both large and small, adding not only light and space to a home but also a truly all-year-round room that keeps warm in winter and cool in summer. Stuart added: “We are also finding many homeowners, just like the Jacksons, are replacing outdated conservatories, often with an orangery or of course simply with a more modern conservatory. The early ones were never really meant for all-year use and would often be too hot in the sun as well as being too cold in winter. Modern conservatories, with their advanced design and energy-efficient glazing, are far ahead of those older ones and while, more homeowners choose to go all the way with an orangery, the traditional

conservatory with a twist of modern technology is still the choice of many.” Everyone wants energy-efficient homes, whether they are out to save the world or save a few pounds off their heating bills, and the same technology that has given such advances in conservatories and orangeries also applies to the windows and doors of our homes.

MORE HOMEOWNERS ASKING FOR NEW WINDOWS ARE ACTUALLY REPLACING EXISTING DOUBLE GLAZING BECAUSE THE NEW WINDOWS ARE SO MUCH BETTER “Double glazing was revolutionary when it was introduced all those years ago,” said Stuart, “But things have come a long way since then and modern windows are massively more energy efficient, last longer and are

45

more secure against intruders and of course they look much better too. Upgrading to a quality, modern double or even triple glazed window, is actually a bigger step forward in energy saving than it was going from single to double glazing in the first place. “We are finding nowadays that more homeowners asking for new windows are actually replacing existing double glazing because the new windows are so much better… and of course, you can always find a perfect match with your new conservatory or orangery so it can make good sense to consider doing everything at the same time.” n

With a love of making things, talented Susie Talbot is now exporting beautiful, hand-made bags all over the world

R

eturning from a three-year adventure living in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Susie Talbot and her family returned to their Lancashire roots, where Susie set up in business. “I have never really had a career plan but I have always loved making beautiful things that people like so much that they want to buy,” explains Susie who, while living on Mull, made and sold silver jewellery as well as luxury teddy bears made from mohair and leather.

INSPIRED FROM HER TIME IN SCOTLAND, SHE SOURCED TWEED FROM THE ARDALANISH ISLE OF MULL WEAVERS For many years Susie and her husband Andy, a professional artist, ran a luxury B&B in Ribchester before embarking on their family trip to the Inner Hebrides: “We sold the B&B and we decided that for both us and the children it was the right time in life to go on an adventure together. We went with an open mind and we loved it. “When you go out into the world

IT’S IN THE BAG… and do something new, you realise there are lots of lovely people out there and you make new friends. The experience really changed us, made us less fearless. We have always loved adventures!” While on Mull the couple’s two children went to local schools and the family lived in a large house, which Susie and Andy refurbished: “After three years we had just finished doing up the house when we were approached by a couple who said if we were ever selling, could they buy it? “Big houses on the island are hard to sell o we made the decision to sell and come back to the Ribble Valley for our eldest to start high school.” When the family returned to Lancashire, Susie, who has a degree in zoology, worked

in a local school, but knew she wanted to set up her own business. “I remember having some Christmas money and I decided to buy myself a really nice bag. I got one from York, but it started to fall apart, so I re-stitched the leather. It was then that I began to think about making bags myself.” Around this time Susie’s husband Andy had bought a satchel style bag from a leather craftsman in Ormskirk. “I asked him if there were any leather working or saddlery courses he knew of. He told me to call by for half a day so I could watch him work so I did. I then set about teaching myself how to make a bag. I love learning new skills – I read a lot of books on leatherwork!” Setting herself up in business, Susie

48

fashion One of the more interesting requests she has received for a bespoke bag came from a local man, who wanted a leather bag to match the leather seats of a sports car he had built.

WE DECIDED THAT FOR BOTH US AND THE CHILDREN, IT WAS THE RIGHT TIME IN LIFE TO GO ON AN ADVENTURE TOGETHER

founded the Little Leather Handbag Company and bought blades, edge bevelling tools, awls and, the most important piece of equipment, a saddler’s clam: “I absolutely love tools – when you have the right equipment it makes the job so much easier!” Inspired from her time in Scotland, she sourced tweed from the Ardalanish Isle of Mull Weavers, who use wool from Hebridean sheep giving the tweed distinctive natural hues. Natural dyes are also used such as lichens and woad. The lengthy dyeing process is done by hand as is the weaving carried out by the islanders. Susie also uses Harris Tweed, which is hand-woven by islanders in the Outer Hebrides, as well as tweeds from Marton Mill in Otley,Yorkshire.

The luxury leather she uses is also hand finished and is vegetable tanned using a variety of tree bark and roots. “I import most of my leather as whole hides from Tuscany in Italy,” explains Susie, who sources buckles and rivets from a foundry in the UK. Making her own patterns, Susie now sells her bags all over the world: “I have shipped to Texas, Utah, Oregon, California and Australia, as well as throughout the UK. Social media has been fantastic for my business.” While Susie sells the majority of her bags through her website, she also makes a number of bespoke bags too, in unique designs often embellished with initials or a name.

“I originally said no,” recalls Susie. “I knew it would take up so much ‘thinking time’ but I eventually agreed to do it – just for the love of it! “The car was bright red and the seats were a natural tan leather so I made a bag that nestles perfectly between the back seats. The background colour of the bag is tan to blend in with the leather seats and on the front of the bag is his car stitched in soft red leather – and the straps are made of seatbelt. It looked amazing – he was made up with it!”

Working on another project, Susie is currently making reins for horses on a carousel and the Derby Racer ride on Blackpool Pleasure Beach: “I am really enjoying doing those. It’s a nice project,” adds Susie, who works from a home studio that she shares with her husband. She also has a small boutique shop at her beautiful country home just outside Ribchester, where her bags are on display. “What people really like is the fact that the bags are totally handmade, following the natural organic ethos of the business. I think that’s important. “Before I even begin to work on a bag, I have all these lovely materials that have been naturally hand dyed and hand woven – all made with love. The end result is naturally going to be beautiful.” n

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER Whittles has been a diamond on Preston’s high street for almost 160 years. The prestigious jewellers has stood the test of time and gone from strength to strength. Our reporter Helen Sanderson talked to Whittles manager, Rose Wilson about the secret to its success. Photography: Roger Moore

R

ose explained: “Whittles is a family business with our managing director Joanna Rhodes-Valentine being the fourth generation of the Rhodes family. These family values remain at the heart of our operation. We offer an exceptionally high-level of service and have a team of dedicated and talented staff.” Recently the business has gone through a transformation and huge investment programme. In late 2018 the showroom was extended to create an exclusive Rolex Room and Luxury Diamond Room and it increased the staff team to 10. Whittles is accredited as the only Rolex repair centre in Lancashire and Cumbria. This is testament to the expertise and knowledge

WE OFFER AN EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH-LEVEL OF SERVICE AND HAVE A TEAM OF DEDICATED AND TALENTED STAFF of in-house watchmaker Barry Douthwaite and the team at Whittles. The Rolex Room showcases a vast selection of the luxury watches which Whittles can boast is amongst the largest selection in the UK. Rose said: “We stock a vast range from the Rolex collection as well as now also offering a substantial range of luxury time pieces from Omega, Tag Heuer and Breitling. Our dedicated sales team has vast experience and can support and advise

on your purchase.” The beautiful Diamond Room, with its bright lights and twinkling gems is situated away from the busy shop floor. This is an area dedicated to Whittles’ world class, hand-sourced diamonds and gemstones. Whittles is very proud of its highly trained, passionate team. In addition, it has an FGA qualified gemmologist on site eager to share their knowledge and experience. Buying a precious stone will certainly be a memorable occasion.

Complementing its exquisite diamond ring and diamond jewellery selection, Whittles also stocks a vast array of gold jewellery, wedding rings and a host of precious and semi-precious gemstones as well as the world-renowned pearl brand Mikimoto. Rose explained: “Over the past year or so we have seen an increase in people wanting to purchase much more traditional jewellery. There has been a rise in demand for heavier 9ct gold pieces, from earrings and pendants to necklaces and bracelets. We have noticed that the trend has moved away from silver fashion jewellery back towards gold.” The gold price has fallen to a much more affordable level and people are once again enjoying buying jewellery that can be heirloom pieces that they can wear with pride. This is where Whittles excels providing a first-class service when you are buying a gift you will treasure. n

ISN’T SHE LOVELY? Offering a genuinely personal service, this talented stylist will ensure your wedding outfit is as memorable and perfect as the day itself, writes Kate Ford. Photography: Roger Moore

W

hen a son or daughter is getting married, there’s always plenty to think about before the big day. Top of the list for the mother of the bride or groom, however, is likely to be the allimportant wedding outfit. If you live in Preston or the Fylde, within your reach are the very personal services of a true fashion expert, with over 30 years’ experience of making women look their absolute best. Pat Haslam owns Revente and Revente Weddings, luxury resale dress shops in Lytham, where the outstanding quality of outfits and accessories is matched only by the unrivalled service. “If you want to look absolutely perfect, you should be personally styled and that’s what I do,” says Pat. “For weddings, it’s a one-to-one service where you’ll have my undivided attention and we’ll find exactly the right outfit for you.” Based above Clifton Collectables, on Clifton Street, Revente Weddings has a breath-taking range of mother of the bride or groom outfits from the most sought-after labels such as Veni Infantino, Condici,

Irresistible by Veromia, Ian Stuart, John Charles and Linea Raffaelli. Looking around, it’s hard to believe that everything isn’t brand new. “That’s because I only accept items of exceptional quality,” explains Pat. “I’m extremely particular about what comes in, because my customers expect the very best. Everything here looks and feels brand new.” The quality is certainly there, but there’s something else that makes choosing your special outfit with Pat such a joy. She has a meticulous eye when it comes to occasion wear, but it’s her genuine warmth and complete honesty that truly sets her apart.

IF YOU WANT TO LOOK ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, YOU SHOULD BE PERSONALLY STYLED AND THAT’S WHAT I DO “Honesty is key. I would rather a customer left with nothing, than with an outfit that doesn’t look perfect,” she says. “I can tell what will look good on someone and I like to encourage people to try new styles they haven’t considered before. The results can be jaw dropping!” Pat also has a fantastic collection of shoes, handbags, hats and fascinators, from Prada, Gucci, Chanel and others, so customers can complete their whole outfit. “Whatever your size or shape, we’ll make you look stunning, from your hat right down to your shoes. “So many customers come to see me after the event, to say thank you and tell me how wonderful they felt all day.” If you have a fabulous outfit, purchased in the last two years and worn only once, you could take it into Revente. “Truly beautiful clothes shouldn’t be confined to a wardrobe. If you have a luxury item that still looks brand new, bring it to me for resale.” n Personal stylings at Revente Weddings are by appointment only. Please give Pat a call, or pop into the original Revente shop on Pleasant Street Parade.

ith a stormy winter hopefully behind us, it’s time to look forward to warmer weather and the chance to get out and embrace springtime with a renewed, positive outlook. You might look in the mirror, though and find that your skin doesn’t reflect your new-found enthusiasm for life. If the winter months have left your complexion looking dry and dull, then Liv Hindmoor and the team at her professional clinic, 3D Aesthetics Ltd, know exactly how to

restore your seasonal glow. Liv’s clinic offers a range of proven, non-invasive treatments for body and face, alongside injectable treatments delivered by a professional nurse. “We find both men and women need a little confidence boost at this time of year,” says Liv. “Whether they’ve put on weight over winter or feel their skin looks pale and tired, we have a range of treatments guaranteed to make them feel better about themselves.”

LIV HAS SUCH A PLEASANT, WARM PERSONALITY, IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT SKINCARE AND VERY PROFESSIONAL Hugely popular is Liv’s ‘Express Microdermabrasion’, a 40-minute facial which includes cleanse and tone, followed by exfoliating microdermabrasion, gold collagen or vitamin mask, and LED light therapy, all for just £25. Says Liv: “It’s an amazing treatment with superb results, leaving skin looking flawless and glowing. It provides the perfect base for make-up so is ideal for a special occasion or big night out.” A highly skilled specialist in non-invasive techniques, Liv also offers a range of high performing 3D Lipo treatments which break down fat cells by freezing, ultrasound or radio waves. Treatment of four or more areas is carried out in two separate appointments. Liv also offers regular sessions for injectable treatments and fillers, delivered by an experienced, registered nurse. These include wrinkle smoothing treatments (including advanced wrinkle smoothing treatments), dermal fillers, lip enhancements, cheek volumising, contouring, jaw definition, non-surgical nose jobs, enzyme peels and Vitamin B12 injections. COOL CUTS Sarah Varley speaks to owner Edd Holden about the opening of Cannon House Barbers, offering bespoke male grooming that combines high end traditional and contemporary services with a great customer experience Congratulations on your launch last month, what motivated you to open Cannon House Barbers? After DJing all over the world, I changed tack a few years ago and combined this with barbering. As well as working in a high-end barbers in Lytham, I worked at renowned Manchester barbers’ Mr Male Grooming in Spinningfields. The city-centre clientele demanded extremely high standards so I really honed my skills and wanted to bring that level of barbering to my home town of Preston. I was also really inspired by the barbershop bar I visited at the Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas last year – the idea that the experience can be so much more than a haircut. What made you choose Cannon Street as your location? Cannon Street has recently had a regeneration through lottery funding. The cobbles have been restored and there are a lot of really cool shops. We are located right opposite the very popular Wings and Beer Sports Bar. It’s also a really handy location for all the young professionals on Winckley Square, another really vibrant part of Preston where the arcitecture was inspired by the Georgian squares of London back in the 1800s. I’m very proud of Preston’s heritage – as well as being eye-catching, the big green sheep in our window is the symbol from Preston’s coat of arms in the away team colour of Preston North End.

What sets you apart at Cannon House? As well as the highest standards of barbering, it’s about the service and the experience. There is nothing else like us in Preston. The shop is really cool and quirky – fresh, crisp and modern with a stripped-back, warehouse style, you feel like you are in London or the Northern Quarter. We’ve added details like custom lighting, that not only looks great but provides the perfect spread of light for cutting hair. The space has been designed to be moveable as we’re going to have live events and exhibitions to enjoy while you get your hair cut, I’m delighted to be getting the very active creative community in Preston involved with art exhibitions as well as DJ sets on the last weekend of each month. The most important difference is the service. Here you can enjoy a wash and finish along with a really good cup of coffee without being rushed – a complimentary fresh ground bean coffee or beverage of your choice is included with every service. It’s the perfect experience! n

THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT

Y

ou might think that with Penwortham being just a 10 minute drive from Preston city centre, it might lose out in terms of visitors and shoppers, but Penwortham has seen some major changes over the last 12 months, which is actually attracting more people and there’s still something to look forward to in 2020. Penwortham has always prided itself on its array of independent shops offering something different, but now it’s been capturing the food and drink market with bars and restaurants keen to get on board the town’s emerging restaurant and bar economy. Lime Bar, Tap and Vine, Craft and Crust, Bon Bon Café, all sit nicely alongside Salvatore’s, Slice of Scilly, the Black Bull

When you’re looking to relocate to a new town, whether it’s for work or to live, it’s important to research the local amenities. There are some places which are punching above their weight when it comes to these and Penwortham is one of them Inn, The Fleece and Cop Lane Coffee Shop and Restaurant. With plenty of variety, there really is something for everyone. Penwortham also benefits from having a great community spirit, which has helped keep its local feel. Events such as Penwortham Live ’20 which is an annual music festival, taking place this year 15th and 16th May, which sees venues from churches to coffee shops, bars to bistros taken over so visitors and residents can enjoy live music and entertainment

over the two days. This is followed by the Penwortham Gala in June and Christmas Markets in December. The relatively new Penwortham Arts Centre in the old library, also hosts a range of activities, events and interest groups for the whole community. With the new Penwortham bypass now open, travel to and from Penwortham is now even easier. So, the future really is bright for Penwortham and well worth a visit. n

IN GOOD COMPANY Interesting beers, quality wines, good food and conversation have made The Tap and Vine part of the Penwortham community

W

hen Debbie Colles and husband Jason were designing The Tap and Vine, they thought about their favourite venues. “We wanted somewhere comfortable and cosy, with great drinks and conversation,” says Debbie. “An Irish pub vibe with the style of some New York bars.” The result is a welcoming micro pub with a casual, but chic, interior. Famed for its choice of quality real ales, from both small brewers, such as Chain House, to the larger Bowland Brewery, it also features hard-to-finds such as Icelandic white beer Einstok, and vegan-friendly brands. Vines are represented by a sophisticated wine list, which includes crisp Sauvignon Blancs and rich reds. Tap and Vine makes a point of supporting local suppliers, buying wines from DVino’s of Preston.

Accompanying these drinks is Debbie’s menu of snacks and generous hot and cold sharing platters. Local producers are well represented with hot pies from Woods Farm Shop and artisan bakes by John’s Bread. “Our sharing experience includes meats and cheeses from across Lancashire and perfect pork pies accompanied by tasty chutneys,” says Debbie. “We are excited to be celebrating two years of success, made possible by our hard-working team and the support of our fabulous customers. We know many clientele by name, just how pubs used to be,” she concludes. n Tap and Vine 69 Liverpool Road Penwortham, Preston PR1 9XD 01772 751116 tapandvine.co.uk

ith over 20 years’ experience as a burns and plastic surgery nurse, working in the NHS and private sectors, Hayley McKay has become something of an expert when it comes to skin. Hayley and her team provide services including dermal filler and anti-wrinkle injections, chemical peels, IPL, laser hair removal, microneedling and dermaplaning. Some clients simply want to freshen their skin’s complexion, whilst others want help with specific issues, like acne scarring, rosacea or pigmentation. Paris is not only known as the city of romance but the capital of fashion. A lot of the major French fashion brands, such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior have their headquarters here. You may want to dress more formally in Paris to fit in with the locals. For sight-seeing, there’s also an abundance of attractions from the Eiffel Tower, the Musée du Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe. The café culture in Paris is also second to none. At the heart of both the social and culinary life in the French capital, the popularity of pavement cafes is world renowned. It’s a chance to relax and simply watch the world go by. If you’re visiting any of the above cities for fashion weeks, these are generally held in February and September to launch the new season’s trends. n

Its farm shop, tearoom, country store and home and gift lofts are brimming with spring delights. There are beautiful spring and Easter decorations, including glittery eggs and adorable rabbit ornaments, as well as stunningly planted spring displays,

including urns planted with mini daffodils, blossom and pussy-willow. In the gift loft, new season stock from Powder UK includes show-stopping embroidered headbands in a range of seasonal colours – they’re sure to sell out quickly so snap them up quick! Matching bags will complete the look, along with its new range of statement sunglasses.

WE’RE SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEW DEVELOPMENT AND HAVE BEEN THRILLED WITH THE INTEREST SO FAR New stockist at Owd Barn is Kate of Kensington which produce unique marble platters taking inspiration from the flora and fauna of the Great British countryside.

The possibilities are endless. PICTURE PERFECT We all know that when it comes to fashion, everyone wants to look good on the catwalk and on the camera, but how realistic is it for us to look perfect all the time and how good is it for our actual wellbeing

T

oday’s generation Z are always on their phones. They constantly feel the need to post images of themselves (or their food) and see how many people like or comment on their posts. But trying to have a picture-perfect image and life can have a detrimental effect on our self-esteem and mental health. The fashion industry needs to take stock and start featuring women and men of all ages, sizes and ethnicity to represent the world we live in today. Unfortunately, not all of us have access to a personal trainer, nutritionist, makeup and hair stylist and there is no such thing as a perfect body. We should all be celebrating the one we have. Regrettably that’s not always the case, with girls in particular, feeling they need to be constantly made up, and in some cases considering anti-wrinkle injections or lip enhancements from an early age. The #StatusOfMind study, undertaken by

the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) in 2017, surveyed nearly 1,500 young people between the ages of 14 and 24, to assess how social media platforms affected health and wellbeing, including anxiety, depression, self-identity and body image.

JUST CELEBRATE BEING YOU AND YOU WILL FEEL MUCH HAPPIER While YouTube was found to have the most positive impact, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter all had negative effects on mental health. For example, researchers reported that Instagram draws young women to “compare themselves against unrealistic, largely curated, filtered and Photoshopped versions of reality”. Instagram is currently trialling in the US the removal of likes on posts, in a bid to curb its negative effects on young people’s health and wellbeing. Whether it works,

remains to be seen. Whilst some fashion chains are increasing their size range, they are still showcasing the products on models who are a size 6-8. The catwalk has also been criticised for using models who are just simply too thin and look anorexic. In fact, Victoria Beckham faced criticism for promoting what many people feel to be an unhealthy body image. High street chains can play their part by changing their mannequins in their windows from a skinny size 6 to a more realistic 12-14. They can stop photoshopping photographs for social media and keep it natural. After all we all have flaws, models need to look like real women. Yes, we should be encouraging the young and old to take care of themselves through exercise, eating healthy, sleeping well etc, but most of all, that beauty comes from within, and it’s more important to learn to love yourself than to gain more followers on Instagram. We are all unique and individual human beings and we shouldn’t have to compare ourselves to others just because an industry says so. Just celebrate being you and you will feel much happier. n

FULL OF NATURAL BALANCE Life-long animal lover Olivia Johnstone has achieved her ambition of opening an animal feed outlet here in the Ribble Valley. Gail Bailey went along to find out more. Photography: Kirsten Platt

R

ibble Valley Animal Feeds is in a superbly accessible location on Barrow Brook Industrial Estate just off the A59. “I’ve wanted to open an animal feed business for a long time, but finding the right location was absolutely key,” explains owner Olivia. “Recognising that people lead such busy lives meant that the location needed to be somewhere that customers

could quickly get to, and Barrow Brook Estate is perfect.” Olivia has always loved animals, having ridden horses since she was six and competing in cross country events, to currently owning four Springer Spaniels. “We cater for a wide range of animals at the store including dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens and wild birds, but we also have a wide range of equine stock along with

feeds and supplies for farm animals, goats and alpacas – the list is endless!” she explains. Focusing on quality brands is important to Olivia to make sure she only supplies the very best. “There is a growing trend to feed our pets biologically appropriate raw foods,” Olivia explains.

I’VE WANTED TO OPEN AN ANIMAL FEED BUSINESS FOR A LONG TIME, BUT FINDING THE RIGHT LOCATION WAS ABSOLUTELY KEY “Just as people are becoming more aware of their own diet they are doing the same for their pets. Research is telling us that some of the benefits of a raw diet for dogs and cats includes cleaner teeth and fresh breath, better weight control, improved digestion, shinier, healthier skin and coat plus more energy and stamina.” Some of the award winning brands that Ribble Valley Animal Feeds stock includes Poppy’s Picnic, which is a nutritionally

balanced raw meat brand mixed with vegetables and superfoods, such as flaxseed oil and wheatgrass, Orijen Pet Foods who produce meat-based food using a diverse range of ingredients sourced by farmers who use sustainable means and a focus on animal welfare, and Carnilove which is grain and potato free but has 75 per cent wild-origin meats along with forest fruits, vegetables, berries and herbs to provide important vitamins and nutrients. Top name brands are plentiful at Ribble Valley Animal Feeds. Equine feeds that use the latest scientific research to nutritionally support horses and ponies include Pure Feeds, Thunderbrook, Allen & Page and Baileys. Olivia adds: “We are also the local drop off and collection point for Fab Equine Laundry, who wash, proof and repair rugs. We stock Cravenbale Hay and also ProBed horse bedding, one of the best on the market, providing a natural, warm, soft and economical horse bedding solution which is antibacterial and virtually dust free. “We have a free local delivery service and will also be offering an online system too, so customers are able to check stock, order and either collect or arrange delivery,” Olivia says. The store is happy to order special items for clients too: “We can get hold of most things so we are more than happy to order unique products in for our customers.” Pet accessories are provided by the fashionable and functional Hemmo & Co who have more than 25 years’ experience

in the pet industry and supply leads, harnesses, collars and fun toys to keep pets amused and stimulated.

WE CATER FOR A WIDE RANGE OF ANIMALS AT THE STORE INCLUDING DOGS, CATS, RABBITS, CHICKENS AND WILD BIRDS BUT WE ALSO HAVE A WIDE RANGE OF EQUINE STOCK ALONG WITH FARM ANIMALS, GOATS AND ALPACAS Ribble Valley Animal Feeds have only been open a short time but are already making a big impact locally and have some exciting events coming up. One talking point is their eye-catching logo: “It does seem to get people thinking! Look carefully – how many animals can you see?” n

Lytham to St Annes Pier Distance: 7.2 miles Elevation Change: 93ft Difficulty Rating: 1 out of 5 Map and details visit: https://blog.ribblecycles.co.uk/ ribble-rides-fylde-coast/

LET’S TAKE A RIDE…

H

ere at Ribble Cycles we love a bike ride, no matter how long or short it may be. This particular ride is one for all of the family, it’s mainly traffic free for the duration and suits riders of all ages and abilities. It covers a section of Sustrans route 62 which itself forms part of the West Pennine Trail, connecting Fleetwood and Selby in North Yorkshire and ultimately

the west and east coasts of England (the coast to coast). The route is a simple out and back, from Lytham, through Fairhaven to St Annes Pier. Starting at the east end of Lytham promenade the route follows the mouth of the Ribble estuary. On a good day Southport is in view across the estuary just a mere seven miles distance (nearly 30 by road). You will immediately encounter the attractions of the Lytham Windmill and RNLI lifeboat house. This museum is often described as a tardis for it looks much larger inside with four floors dedicated to the history of milling, shrimping and the Lytham lifeboat.

Continue on (or pop in, it’s free) until the path meets the inner promenade roadway that connects Lytham and St Annes. A short section of pathway takes you to Fairhaven Lake which can trace its origins back to the latter stages of the reign of Queen Victoria. It’s an ideal place to stop for some peace and tranquillity as well as a spot of wildlife watching. Amongst its attractions, the lake boasts

a café, RSPB discovery centre and boating. From here it is a short ride along the inner promenade to Fairhaven Road car park. Hook a left, head into the car park, then turn right and head for the beach café. Look for the path to the right of the café’s entrance and follow this all the way down to St Annes Pier. Grab some refreshment in St Annes or head back to Lytham where there’s a large selection of eating places along the main street to choose from. n Do you fancy joining us on a Ribble Cycles ride out? It has been hard to miss in the news recently, the widespread flooding caused by storms Ciara and Dennis. Severe flood warnings were issued for several heavily populated areas, meaning a danger to life

I

n the wake of this, Sir James Bevan, the head of the Environment Agency, has said that building new homes on flood plains in England should be resisted if possible. Whilst this may seem quite sensible, for decades now developers have built new housing estates on floodplains as the land is usually less valuable. Whilst such estates are usually protected by flood defences, this merely moves the area of impact explains Graeme Booth, property solicitor at Farleys. During storms Ciara and Dennis, some areas saw a month’s worth of rain

Photography: Can Stock Photo Highway Starz

FLOODING THE HOUSING MARKET in 24 hours with river levels in the Colne, Ribble, Calder, Aire, Trent, Severn, Wye, Lugg, and Derwent all setting new records. Unfortunately, as England has so many rivers, much of the country is a flood plain and, by the 25th February, England had already received 141 per cent of its average February rainfall! For years the Environment Agency has raised concerns about building homes on floodplains but Sir James has stated that where there was no alternative, homes should be made more resilient, for example by using ground floors for garages so people stay safe upstairs. This is particularly important, given that Sir James predicts the number of properties built on floodplains is likely to nearly double over the next 50 years. He has called for a discussion about the sustainability and protection for communities at risk of flooding in the long term, accepting that there may be a need to shift some of these out of harm’s way when the risks become too great. This discussion will raise some profoundly difficult questions such as whether it’s feasible to build ever bigger

flood defences, with alternative techniques to flood-proof homes including planting trees, creating wetland habitats or restoring rivers that have been artificially straightened to their natural curves. Scientists warn that climate change is raising the risk of flooding because winter storms will bring more heavy rainfall in a warming world. In response, the Environment Agency has claimed that it is spending £2.6bn on new flood defences that will better protect 300,000 properties by 2021, plus £1bn on maintaining existing defences in England. Sir James accepts however there are some places that will become too hard to protect from rivers or the sea and in those cases, says: “It may be better for communities to choose to relocate out of harm’s way.” This will create a problem for homeowners in those areas as their homes will be virtually worthless once identified as being in such areas. From a conveyancing perspective, it is impossible for lawyers to predict when a property is at risk of flooding due to the impact flood defences further up or down a river can have on other areas. We offer all our residential clients’ flood risk searches,

which attempt to identity flood risks based on historic data, insurance claims history and computer modelling. We are also able to offer searches that look at multiple environmental risks, including flooding. n

PROTECTING OUR PETS

A

nimals have always been a huge part of Kevin Horkin’s life. He grew up on a farm and laughs that his first kiss was from a dog at the age of two. He now has nine French bulldogs, a Chihuahua, a 28-year old macaw, a yellow-crowned Amazon and four Sphynx cats, and has spent most of his working life trying to improve animal welfare. “At 18 I opened my first business, an opticians in Manchester. A friend and I had just brought the first Shar-Pei into the country and someone who worked in TV spotted him and wanted to use him in a programme,” Kevin explains. “I began providing animals to all kinds of TV shows,

In 2017, Kevin was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to charity. featured on TV and also, especially with crime dramas, to avoid particular breeds of dogs from being demonised. I would suggest alternative breeds to those getting bad press in the tabloids at the time, such as Dobermans and Rottweilers. I truly believe there is no such thing as a bad dog, only irresponsible owners. I organised a march for more humane alternatives to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to have American Pit Bull Terriers euthanized and we succeeded in getting this changed to the neutering of all male Pit Bulls.” Kevin became a columnist for the Mirror and his column Pet People is still running in the Sunday People. WE WILL BE CAMPAIGNING TO CHANGE INJUSTICES ON BEHALF OF ALL ANIMALS

However, Kevin is now relaunching the charity with a big focus on changing unfair anomalies in animal law. “It is wrong that living, feeling creatures are treated as property in the eyes of the law,” Kevin says. “Cats are particularly unprotected, with no legal requirement for drivers to report hitting a cat, or even to stop. We will be campaigning to change injustices on behalf of all animals, as well as promoting responsible pet ownership, affordable and fair veterinary provision and working with other great pet charities. “We have secured the support of patrons including actor William Roache and MP Nigel Evans and now we are looking for trustees and volunteers. We would love to hear from professionals such as retired lawyers with legal expertise and anyone passionate about animal welfare who might be able to get involved for a couple of hours a week. We are hoping to open our first charity shop soon and we are excited about the difference we can make together for all animals.” n Contact kevin@kevinhorkin.co.uk or 01200 423267 if you would like to be involved

hillipa Chad combines experience and artistic flair to produce beautiful and natural reportage style wedding photography and portraiture. Originally from Penwortham, Phillipa has had studios at Cedar Farm Gallery, Mawdesley and Powderham Castle, Exeter and is delighted with her new base at Stydd Gardens in Ribchester. “Capturing those perfect moments is second nature to me,“ says Phillipa, who has been covering high-end weddings for over 20 years, including many recommendations from the National Trust. “I have been able to take fantastic photographs over the years of weddings in the most stunning locations. I think the National Trust recommend me

shortlisted for the Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition and chosen for the Lancashire Open Exhibition at The Chapel Gallery, Ormskirk. She has also produced exhibitions for the Mounted Section of Lancashire Constabulary and West Lancashire Council. “I like every photograph to be as natural as possible,” Phillipa explains. “People often mistake my photographs for paintings because of the colours, texture and composition. It’s not editing, it is capturing that perfect shot. One of the photos I took at an elephant park in Bali featuring fish and overhanging leaves looks really abstract, but that’s just the beautiful moment I managed to capture. I remember my short-listed photograph ‘A Glimpse of Anglesey’ took quite a few

attempts as my Jack Russell kept jumping in front of the camera!” Phillipa has six dogs so she is well versed in capturing pets in weddings and engagement portraits too. Phillipa knows the importance of getting to know exactly what couples want from their wedding photography beforehand so that everything runs smoothly on the day, and her modern and bright new studio at Stydd Gardens is the perfect space to discuss everything over a coffee. “One of my strengths is fading into the background, invisibly capturing those magical moments without interrupting them,” Phillipa explains. “I also memorise all the names of the wedding party and put everyone at ease to get those perfect must-have group photos, gently guiding the groups based on our consultation without being bossy – this is your perfect day and my job is to quietly capture it in beautiful photographs you will love.” n Telephone consultations are available if preferred

WHAT’S ON THIS EASTER? Easter’s the time when you take advantage of the long weekend, the nights are lighter and it’s a chance to get out with all the family

B

ut if you don’t fancy going away, what activities can you do on your doorstep? Don’t worry Lancashire has plenty to see and do. If you fancy visiting some Lancashire landmarks, then here’s a couple you might want to see. The singing ringing tree in Burnley is not only a remarkable piece of art which can be seen for miles, but as the wind changes direction, the sculpture produces some amazing whistling and whining sounds. There is a short walk up to the top, but you will be rewarded with a panoramic view. Brock Bottom near Garstang is a place for all the family to visit. Enjoy a peaceful walk along the River Brock, take a picnic and in April you get the added bonus of

hundreds of bluebells. Then why not visit the old market town of Garstang and walk through its traditional weinds and enjoy its array of independent shops. For some Easter fun, head to Martin Mere Wetland Centre where you can enjoy finding its giant yellow ducks hidden amongst its real life weird and wonderful duck cousins.

TWENTY FIVE GIANT DUCKS HAVE BEEN HIDDEN AROUND THE WETLANDS AND HELP IS NEEDED TO FIND THEM ALL Twenty five giant ducks have been hidden around the wetlands and help is needed to find them all. Get them all and receive a tasty treat at the end. From ducks to crabs. Why not join the Lancashire Wildlife Trust for Easter crabbing to learn more about these cool crustaceans? Meet at the café kiosks above the model yachting lake in Fleetwood to hear some interesting facts. Then why not head to

Rossall Point Tower with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust to look for seals, porpoises and dolphins passing by. There will be plenty of sea birds to admire from the top deck too. For something more traditional, make sure you visit Avenham and Miller Parks in Preston for its annual egg rolling, something which has been established in the city for 150 years. Not only can you roll your own Easter egg, but there are workshops, arts and crafts, street theatre and live music. If you fancy some action, take the family to try a taster sailing session you’ll remember. A great way to experience Morecambe Bay from the sea. Don’t worry you don’t need prior sailing experience and there’s room for four people aboard the yacht plus the qualified skipper. The whole boating trip lasts around three hours and costs £85 per person. Visit bayseaschool.com for more information. Take a look at what’s around you this Easter and get out there and enjoy it. Happy holidays! n

he Lytham Hall 5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer group invites those living with and beyond cancer, their families, friends and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at a local group linked to a parkrun event on the last Saturday of every month and then socialise after over drink and cake in the local café. In short, it is an active coffee morning combining fresh air, movement and socialising. Physical activity has been shown to

It may also reduce treatment side effects, reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and prolong survival. The 5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer initiative linked to parkrun, provides the opportunity to do this and is run by Neil Tate and Stella Wood. The 5K Your Way, Move Against Cancer, is a national initiative which combines a cancer support group with parkrun. Founded by oncology consultant and 12

There are currently 5K Your Way groups at more than 40 locations across the UK and Republic of Ireland. New members are welcomed, whether walking, jogging, running or just coming for a coffee and a chat. Friendships are cementing and a supportive community is being built. The snowball has begun to roll as people see the value in creating a 5K Your Way Move Against Cancer group in their local community. A strong collaboration with parkrun and support from the wonderful community of parkrun volunteers is facilitating this growth. Claire, one of the first visitors to the event, said: “This is such a good group to be involved with. Everyone is so friendly, and the ambassadors are just lovely. I love the way everyone encourages everyone, even though I walk round as I’m not up to running yet, I had so many lovely comments that really did boost my confidence. EASTER ACTIVITIES

buns to fun carrot cake decorated with little carrots or simple crispy cake nests topped with mini eggs, there are lots of Easter bakes to inspire you.

Surrounded by the beautiful Ribble Valley countryside, there’s no need to go anywhere this Easter, writes Sarah Varley

H

ere are some great ideas for family fun activities to make the most of the holidays at home over Easter.

Enjoy a spring walk

Easter is the perfect time to get outdoors with so many signs of spring bursting into life to spot along the way. Choose a walk length to suit the whole group – you don’t have to go far to enjoy blooming daffodils, bluebells and cherry blossom or spot spring lambs and plenty of birds and wildlife. Studies show spending just five minutes in nature can boost your mood and ability to focus and reduce anxiety. Even reluctant teenagers will enjoy themselves once they get going! Why not plan a walk that ends in one of our beautiful villages for tea and cake or a pub lunch?

Visit a farm park

We have some fantastic farm parks in the area, and they are great places for a simple but satisfying day out. Children can get up close to farm animals and enjoy some good old-fashioned outdoor fun. Easter is an especially good time to visit, with special egg hunts and other events, as well as lovely experiences like bottle feeding lambs and collecting eggs from the hens. Ride-on tractors are always a big hit with vehiclemad little ones and there are plenty of treats to be found in the cafes.

Easter baking

Easter is the perfect time to show off your baking with a showstopping cake for Easter lunch, or just to have fun baking with the kids, especially on a rainy day. From the very traditional Simnel cake or hot cross

Why not let children have a go at growing their own plants? The Easter holidays are a perfect time to sow summer veg and flowers and children will love to watch their plants grow. All sorts of containers can be recycled for sowing seeds, get imaginative with different pots and let children decorate them. Sow pansies, calendula, salad leaves or sweet peas, place them on the windowsill and keep the compost moist but not soaking. Try growing egg cress heads for a really simple Easter-themed activity – put wet kitchen paper in the bottoms of egg shells, decorate with faces, sprinkle cress seeds onto the paper and the cressy hair should grow in a few days. If they’re really keen, you could give children their own little garden plot to grow sunflowers, marigolds or vegetables – a great way to encourage a lifelong love of gardening and nature. n

DA VINCI ACADEMY INITIATIVE

Eagle-eyed school children in Leyland rounded off a weekend of birdwatching in style, courtesy of national housebuilder Lovell Homes. As part of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ Big Garden Weekend, Lovell Homes invited Year One pupils from St Anne’s Catholic Primary School to its Shawbrook Manor development to learn more about the town’s local birdlife. The children built their own bird feeders and designed their own bird masks.

Westholme School was delighted to hear that Will Couch, one of its Year 11 pupils, has been offered a two-year football scholarship from Burnley FC Academy. This is in recognition for all the hard work and commitment he has shown to football over the past few years. Will has previously been selected and played for the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) U15’s National Representative Team.

Rossall School launched three academies as part of its Da Vinci Academy initiative. The Academies will run over the course of the year and are aimed at pupils aged 8-10. Children from across the Fylde were invited to join Rossall’s Junior School pupils for taster sessions of the Da Vinci Maths & Science Academy, the Da Vinci Drama Academy and the Da Vinci Astronomy Academy. It has been created to take children on a journey of discovery.

NATIONAL FINAL CHAMPIONS IN BECKONS FOR BOYS’ CLIMBING QUIZ CLUB TEAM COMPETITION

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has come top of a national wellbeing league table. The 2020 Student Welfare League Table, which analyses the amount of money higher education institutions put into their student wellbeing services, has ranked UCLan in first position. Every student has access to a team of trained counsellors and mental health advisors while a dedicated team provides inclusivity advice and support to students with a disability or learning difficulty.

Pupils from Bolton School Junior Boys’ School took part in and won this year’s Area Heat of the National General Knowledge Championship organised by Quiz Club. Hosted by a professional Quizmaster, the event created a tense atmosphere as several school teams pitted their wits against each other. The competition motivates, inspires and rewards children in their quest for knowledge and provides them with an opportunity to celebrate their achievement by representing their school in the country’s largest inter-school competition.

Six boys from Years 7 and 8 at Oakhill school, took part in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley boys climbing competition at Roefield. There were a variety of challenges on the indoor climbing wall which tested their skills and nerves, accumulating points for skill and agility. Oakhill came away with the highest score of the day, topping the leader board of local schools with a clear lead of 10 points, and a total of 104. The team have now qualified for the Lancashire competition in June.

ONE SMALL STEP… The youngest children at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall enjoy a learning environment that gives them opportunities and experiences to develop skills and confidence

S

t Mary’s Hall offers a challenging and stimulating environment which allows children to feel happy, confident and valued. Children are nurtured to ensure they reach their full potential academically, socially, emotionally, physically and creatively. The Stonyhurst motto, ‘quant je puis’ or ‘as much as I can’, is as tangible and meaningful for the youngest members in St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep as it is at Stonyhurst College.

The children in the Pre-Prep at Hodder House are encouraged to embrace: • All that they can be • All that they can see • All that they can do • All that they can learn For a three-year-old, St Mary’s Hall nursery is the first step in the Stonyhurst journey that will take them seamlessly through an enriching education and into the world beyond. Based in Hodder House on the Stonyhurst campus, children from age three, or in the term that they turn three, enjoy a broad curriculum that celebrates each individual and offers them countless opportunities to discover their talents. St Mary’s Hall presents a unique opportunity for parents to give their child aged from three to 13, the best education possible. Taking a solid academic

approach with specialist teaching, children are presented with opportunities to develop a broad range of skills.

PRE-PREP PUPILS ALSO BENEFIT FROM AN ETHOS THAT COMBINES THE TRADITIONAL VALUES OF COURTESY, GOOD MANNERS AND POLITENESS Children in the Early Years learn through exploring, being creative, having the opportunity to think critically and by being active. The recently extended Hodder House building is a calm and flexible space which offers an exciting environment both indoors and outdoors within a countryside setting. The children also have access to the vast facilities within the Stonyhurst campus,

education

including indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a swimming pool, sports pitches, a theatre, an observatory and access to the unique historic collections within Stonyhurst College, which brings history to life for even the youngest of pupils. Highly trained teachers facilitate learning by observing the children’s interactions and interests and adapting the provision to meet the needs of all children, focusing on ‘stage not age’. The activities and curriculum are carefully planned to ensure they are thought provoking and motivating, promoting independence in the children’s learning journey and a natural thirst and curiosity for knowledge. There is an emphasis on a child-led curriculum with experiences both inside and outside. Mathematics along with early reading and writing, creative arts, music or physical education including dance, swimming and tennis are integral elements to the school day. Stimulation, excitement and experiential learning are considered key. In short, learning is engaging and fun. At each new Key Stage opportunities are unlocked with access to facilities that broaden children’s horizons. While most nursery settings keep children in one room, at Hodder House this isn’t the case. The unique campus allows for everyday learning to be taken outside of the classroom to make the most of the woodland setting. Here children are allowed to develop a wide range of skills including confidence, independence, social and risk taking skills with a hands-on approach. The outdoors are also used during an activities programme, which may involve getting their hands dirty in the gardening club where the Pre-Prep children have fun growing vegetables to take to a food bank. The children are given learning opportunities that build confidence and eloquence – key skills that will take them through St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst College and into the exciting world of university and work. “We believe in equipping children to

think for themselves and take risks within safe boundaries. For example, the children are found building dens, creating paint using natural materials or even toasting marshmallows on an open fire to name but a few activities! New experiences present opportunities,” explains Ros Wroblewski, Assistant Head (Primary Phase) of St Mary’s Hall. “We encourage creative thinking that pushes boundaries.”

CHILDREN ARE PRESENTED WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP A BROAD RANGE OF SKILLS While St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep is based in Hodder House, it is very much part of the Stonyhurst campus.Younger children take part in whole school assemblies and have the opportunity to interact with older pupils, giving them further opportunities to enjoy the international dimension to the school. As a boarding school it has a worldwide reach attracting overseas pupils, who introduce other cultures and languages. From Pre-Prep all pupils are encouraged to act, sing, dance and perform with confidence before an audience. The

105

annual Nativity sees all the younger pupils perform alongside professional musicians. The St Mary’s Hall school day incorporates various extra-curricular activities into the curriculum with all facilities on-site. In recognition of the busy working lives of some parents, the Pre-Prep unit has provision for an extended day where children can enjoy tea with fellow pupils and an exciting activities programme once the normal school day has ended. The strong Jesuit principals of broadening horizons and looking to the future, underpins learning for Pre-Prep pupils, who also benefit from an ethos that combines the traditional values of courtesy, good manners and politeness, which they learn from an early age. When a child starts their journey at St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep, parents become a part of the wider Stonyhurst community and all the facilities the school has to offer. Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep welcomes children of all faiths and offers an accessible and affordable education for all children at nursery age. Parents who are looking for a nursery for their child are welcome to visit the school and see the wonderful facilities that will give their child a great start on their learning journey. n To arrange a private tour or for more information about St Mary’s Hall Pre-Prep please contact Sarah Morrison the St Mary’s Hall Registrar on 01254 827073

A SCHOOL FOR ALL AGES Springtime brings new opportunities to take a closer look at this inspiring school, writes Kate Ford

S

pring is a special time at Rossall School in Fleetwood. As the gardens come back to life and fill the campus with colour, so the excitement builds for what lies ahead in the summer term. Rossall is a school with plenty to explore and in the weeks and months ahead, there will be plenty of opportunities to see more of what it has to offer. The stunning architecture of the original buildings might reflect the school’s rich history but, inside, the facilities and technology are very much of the 21st century. In an Open Day on Saturday 13th June, visitors can tour this impressive campus, see examples of students’ work and talk to teachers, house parents and pupils about life at the school. Highlights on the tour include

the state-of-the-art astronomy centre, art and design studios, performing arts building, golf academy, swimming pool and a new £4m sports centre. “It’s a very inspiring setting,” says head of marketing and communications, Nancy Fielden. “All students, whether day pupils or boarders, are encouraged to make full use of the facilities and take part in every aspect of school life.”

ALL STUDENTS, WHETHER DAY PUPILS OR BOARDERS, ARE ENCOURAGED TO MAKE FULL USE OF THE FACILITIES AND TAKE PART IN EVERY ASPECT OF SCHOOL LIFE Pupils’ work on display at the Open Day will include creative artwork, music, drama, photography, written work and scientific projects. Since the redevelopment of its nursery, Rossall can now take children from as young as three months and is delighted to be participating in the government scheme to offer 30 hours of funded childcare to eligible parents The improved nursery building will have separate areas for babies,

107

two year olds and pre-school children with direct access to dedicated outdoor play areas and garden. Contact the director of Rossall Nursery, Mrs Nikola Stott: n.stott@rossall.org.uk to make arrangements to visit the nursery. During the summer break, Rossall is holding a prestigious performing arts summer school for youngsters aged 8 to 16. Delivered in partnership with established industry professionals from the west end, the school will focus on musical theatre and dance. All tutors have extensive experience of performing in live productions and the school is a must for youngsters aspiring to a career on stage. Further details can be found on the website. Of course, the summer term also brings with it the serious business of exams to be taken. Sixth formers will be hoping to match the impressive results achieved last year in A-levels and the International Baccalaureate. Many sixth formers have already received offers of places from top UK universities whilst others are taking exciting scholarships at overseas universities. “Our pupils are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities, to run societies, mentor younger children and play an active role in the school community,” says head, Jeremy Quarterman. “This nurtures confidence, resilience and a desire to serve others, preparing them to make a valuable contribution to society.” n

fantastic news for everybody involved with our fashion department. Not only is this a boost for our fabulous teaching staff and our enthusiastic and creative students but it’s also great for prospective students, our alumni and interested stakeholders.

UCLAN IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN FASHION TO LEARN ABOUT THE DIFFERENT CAREERS YOU’RE INTERESTED IN

As this issue of the magazine is our fashion edition, we carry the theme through to our business hour feature, where we talk to three alumni (ex-fashion students) of the University of Central “We have really close links with Lancashire in Preston, to find out where their careers in the fashion some of the biggest fashion labels in the industry have led them to today

T

he University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) fashion department has recently been ranked in the top 80 fashion schools in the world. The creative subject, which has also been ranked second in the north west of England and 15th in the United Kingdom, received the 2020 global ranking from CEOWORLD Magazine.

The classification process considered global reputation and influence, specialisation, recruiter’s feedback, job placement rates, admission eligibility and academic experience as well as data from more than 40,000 students, 50,000 industry professionals and 30,000 recruiters. Maria Murray, head of UCLan’s School of Art, Design and Fashion, said: “This is

world, including Burberry, M&S, Reebok, Abercrombie & Fitch, Levi, and the feedback we often get from these industry professionals is how our fashion department is one of the best in the business.” So, with all this success at the university, it’s no wonder that students do well once they graduate. Lynne McKenna, one former student, is now fashion editor of Fabulous Magazine in London. She studied fashion promotion

business at UCLan and her interest in fashion started as a child, when she would sketch dresses for her mum and the dresses she wanted her to wear when she attended the RAF balls with her dad. “I was always passionate about fashion and was given a fashion wheel as a birthday present and it just progressed from there,” she said. “My dad was in the air force and we travelled a lot. We were lucky enough to live abroad and in many places around the UK. I chose UCLan for my sandwich course. Interning was a huge part of my degree and without it I wouldn’t have known about the many careers there were to choose from. When I graduated, I initially became fashion assistant at You Magazine.”

She’s now an award-winning fashion editor currently working at Fabulous Magazine producing, directing and styling innovative, exciting and adventurous fashion shoots. Lynne’s experience and knowledge in the fashion industry has led to roles as fashion expert for ITV’s Lorraine and panellist on the Lorraine High Street Fashion Awards for two consecutive years. “I love fashion because of its creativity, people, the experiences and opportunities it has given me, such as travel, as well as the friendships I have made by working in such a sociable and fun industry,” she added. “UCLan is an opportunity for anyone interested in fashion to learn about the different careers you’re interested in.”

with her own brand Valenci. Valenci’s story started back in October 2016, after Sana graduated with a 1st class degree in fashion design from UCLan. She soon realised her passion was to start her own business and established Sana Zinga Ltd.

Nic Corrigan went to UCLan to study fashion design in 2003 and graduated in 2007, having specialised in knitwear. “I went on a work placement at Coast in London and while I was there, they were having a clear out and they gave me a free knitting machine, which I used to produce my final collection,” says Nic. “I had always hand knitted before I went to UCLan. I enjoy the fact that with machine knitting you have so much scope. UCLan has a good reputation for fashion and it was also in an area in that I wanted to be in. I was a mature student, but when I went for my interview, I knew instantly it was the right place for me. “When I graduated, I did some freelance work for New Look and worked for suppliers to River Island and Arcadia stores, designing samples, getting them produced in the Far East and securing orders. It was really exciting and glamourous going to Paris and Hong Kong, but after seven years, I became a bit disillusioned by fast fashion and I’d moved away from doing the creative work and spent most of my time in meetings. “Back in 2014 I decided to take the plunge and work for myself and I set up my own studio in Hebden Bridge. I now also have a shop in my studio that sells the work of other local artists such as ceramicists, jewellers, print makers and photographers. All the work is designed and made within 20 miles of the shop.” Nic now goes back to UCLan once a year to teach knitwear to students. “It’s a one-day masterclass,” says Nic. “It’s a very intensive run through on machine knitting and a chance for students to finalise their collections.” Sana Zinga is now a fashion designer

She worked from her grandad’s attic as a 21year-old with no business experience, which was a huge learning curve. ARE YOU A BUSINESS OWNER? Have you thought about what would happen to your business if you weren’t around through accident, illness or mental incapacity? Who would step into your shoes to make strategic and daily decisions in your business?

U

nfortunately, you can’t assume a family member or business colleague will gain authority to make these decisions on your behalf. And, although it may not be a pleasant thought, have you considered what will happen to the business when you die? What about you and your family, how financially secure would you and they be? Who would be able to manage your investments and access your bank accounts to ensure the mortgage, school fees and other essential living and care costs were met? At Napthens, we are passionate about looking after our clients, their families and their businesses, so we have created a service to help in these circumstances, the Directors Protection Scheme. This scheme will ensure you have the right protections in place including, a business and a personal lasting power of attorney (where an individual nominates another person to deal with their financial affairs should they lose mental capacity or

be unable to make decisions for themselves), a personal Will, a company Will and also a detailed review of your life insurance, death in service benefits and private pensions. We will take a holistic approach and our experienced estate planning lawyers will work closely with wealth management professionals to identify all the appropriate solutions for you, your family and your business. We would offer you a free initial meeting to review your circumstances and agree your requirements, including a detailed report setting out our advice and proposals. Together, we would then agree the scope of any work required and a quotation for a fixed cost package. If appropriate, we can arrange a follow up meeting with an experienced financial adviser. To find out more about Napthens’ Directors Protection Scheme or to arrange your free initial appointment, contact our estate planning team today who will be happy to assist. n

NEW KID ON THE MOTORING BLOCK

S

ay hello to the MINI Electric, the brand-new kid on the motoring block and a car guaranteed to make a major impact during 2020 and beyond. First off, it’s every bit a MINI. Spirited drive, iconic design, responsive handling, quirky features and heaps of tech. But the big attraction here, is the fully electric motor which brings a raft of economic and environmental advantages. And, make no mistake, there are a stack of financial perks with the MINI Electric. The government currently offer £3,500 against a purchase (it’s classed as a low-emission vehicle). Plus, if you’re considering it as a company car, it comes with a BIK (Benefit-in-Kind) tax rate of 0 per cent for 2020-21. For an on-the-road price

A whole lot of tomorrow mixed perfectly with the best bits of yesterday. Right here, right now, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Roger Moore

starting at £24,400, you get an awful lot of bang for your buck. However, before adding some flesh to the bones of the well-designed interior and great-looking exterior, let’s concentrate on the electric element, with some reassuring facts for anyone out there who’s still a tad nervous about the concept.

SPIRITED DRIVE, ICONIC DESIGN, RESPONSIVE HANDLING, QUIRKY FEATURES AND HEAPS OF TECH • The distance range (basically how far you can go on a single charge), an impressive 145 miles. • The cost per mile – just 4p. That’s 2.5 - 6 times cheaper than cars with petrol or diesel engines. • Battery charging – dead easy, either at home or on the go. Achieve an AC 0-80 per cent home charge in 12 hours

motors

115

(3hrs 12mins with a wallbox) and a DC public rapid charge in 36 minutes. • Charging stations – always near at hand, around 8,000 available (many across Lancashire) and all of them integrated into the in-built MINI Navigation system. • Battery life – so good that the manufacturers offer warranty for eight years or 100,000 miles! You can customise your three-door MINI Electric to satisfy personal taste (did I mention the six handsome colour options available. White, silver, moonwalk grey, Midnight black, British racing green, chilli red and enigmatic black) and choose alternative colours for roof and mirror caps.

THE GOVERNMENT CURRENTLY OFFER £3,500 AGAINST A PURCHASE

The clever engineers have thought through every detail with regard to spec. Essentially, there’s absolutely nothing standard about the standard model, with MINI navigation, a key feature and a fully digital dashboard (still the famous circular shape) which brings a futuristic feel to the cockpit. Throw in automatic transmission, front and rear LED lights, cruise control, intelligent emergency call (MINI E-call), DAB digital tuner etc and you can see nothing has been spared. At levels two and three, you will also discover front distance

control, rear-view camera, heated front seats, front centre armrest, Harman Kardon hi-fi system, head-up display, panoramic glass sunroof and parking assistant. Bold 17” Corona spoke alloys bring a further touch of style. As for performance, maximum output is 184hp, maximum torque 270 Nm and you can go from 0-37 in under four seconds and from 0-62 in 7.3 seconds. CO2 emissions? Zero. The drive is fun, easy handling, controlled braking, responsive acceleration and so, so quiet. In short, it’s impossible not to like the MINI Electric. A serious small car with a funky nature and genuine mass appeal. It will go far. n Bowker Preston MINI Channel Way, Ashton-on-Ribble Preston PR2 2YA 01772 761234 bowkerprestonmini.co.uk

GET ON THE GREEN If you’re looking for a sociable sport that keeps you active, then crown green bowling could be for you

W

hen it comes to crown green bowling, Lancashire led the way back in the 19th century and is still a key county when it comes to the game. Probably more widely known for being played up north and in the Midlands, Blackpool and the Fylde is just one of the many areas, where people can enjoy it. So why is it called crown green bowls? Lawn bowls and crown green bowls are both played outdoors, however instead of playing on a flat green, the main difference

is that the centre of the bowling green has a raised surface called the crown. Not to be confused with flat green bowling. Flat greens, known as rinks, are on a large surface of grass as level as possible. On one area there can be many rinks of around 16 feet wide and 120 feet long. This is the standard flat green rink size and can only vary very slightly.

IT’S A GAME OF SKILL, CONCENTRATION AND NOT ONLY IS IT A SOCIAL SPORT BUT IT’S GOOD FOR YOU TOO Many may think crown green bowling isn’t really a sport, but it became more popular after it began to be televised, back in the 1960s when the BBC went to

the Waterloo Hotel in Blackpool to record a tournament. It’s a game of skill, concentration and not only is it a social sport but it’s good for you too as you are outside and it’s a gentle way to keep active. Whilst it may seem like it’s a game that is played by the more mature or retired person, it is actually a game for all ages, sex or physical abilities, with many clubs having junior teams. I spoke with Peter Jose who is secretary of three leagues on the Fylde Coast. He said: “The cubs around here have been established for some time,” he said. “There’s a mixture of mixed teams, men’s, ladies, vets or juniors. Although at the moment we are not seeing many juniors come through. It’s not really something that’s promoted at school and so they don’t necessarily

sport

know about it, unless they have a parent or grandparent who plays it. I’d say any youngsters from the starting age of 8-10 can have a go. “It’s a great social sport that everyone enjoys. However, it can get quite competitive on the green sometimes.” The season starts from 1st April and goes on to the end of September and is usually played in all weather, providing both captains are happy to play on. So, what are the rules? “The game is played with bowls and a jack,” said Peter. “The leader must bowl the jack to set a mark of around 19 metres. The opponent may make objection after the first bowl has been played, a measurement then takes place to decide the objection. The method of scoring is one point for each bowl nearer

to the jack than an opponents. No player is allowed to change the jack or bowls unless they are so damaged as to be unplayable. At the conclusion of an end, neither the jack or any bowl which is claimed to count is allowed to be moved without the consent of the opponent. If the home team wins on aggregate, they will get two points, if the away team wins on aggregate, they will receive three points.”

IT’S A GREAT SOCIAL SPORT THAT EVERYONE ENJOYS. HOWEVER, IT CAN GET QUITE COMPETITIVE ON THE GREEN SOMETIMES For team matches, they play home and away and depending on the number of teams in a league, can be playing up to 46 matches per year. With green locations in Lancashire covering everywhere from Blackburn and Darwen to Preston, Lancaster and Morecambe, Blackpool and Lytham, there really will be a club near you. “If you are looking to find out more about crown green bowling,” said Peter, “the best bet is to come down to a few different clubs and have a look round. Depending on the club will depend on what day or evening they play, and the facilities and membership fees will vary from club to club. “It’s all about enjoying ourselves, meeting new people but there’s a serious side to the game as well.” n

Anyone interested in finding out more about joining a crown green bowling club on the Fylde Coast, can email Peter at: peter.jose@hotmail.co.uk

hilst golf can be played all year round, spring is the time when the weather is warmer and the lighter nights mean you can play for longer. There’s no better place than in our own region and Lancashire has some of the best golf courses, including the renowned links course, the Royal Lytham St Annes, which has hosted the prestigious Open Tournament 11 times. Whether you are just looking for a leisurely stroll around a course or wanting something more challenging, there will be a golf course for you. And if you haven’t played before but fancy giving it a go, some golf clubs offer taster lessons to see if it’s for you. Golf is one of the oldest sports around yet is still increasing in popularity. More women are taking up golf, along with

younger people and in Asia it is fast becoming the game of choice*.

SOME GOLF CLUBS OFFER TASTER LESSONS TO SEE IF IT’S FOR YOU So why does it continue to grow? It’s a great form of exercise and being outside increases our vitamin B intake, so keeps us fit and healthy. It’s a game that can be played solo, in couples or in teams, by pretty much anyone of all abilities. And it’s keeping up with the times. Whilst it is still seen as a traditional game, it is, in fact, keeping up with the times with the use of apps and technology being used to analyse and perfect your swing, putt, and game. CELEBRATING SEASONAL HERDWICK LAMB Herdwick is a traditional breed of hardy hill sheep native to Cumbria, the name originates from “Herdwyck”, meaning sheep pasture

R

oaming freely on the Cumbrian hills at heights upwards of 1,000 feet, the sheep graze on wild grass and forage which gives the lamb a distinctive gamey flavour. They survive alone on the mountains all winter. They never stray from their ‘heaf’ – the area they were suckled as lambs. Herdwick lamb has historic ties to the Lake District and is the symbol of the Fells, but there are only 13,000 remaining upland holdings in England and 20 per cent

of these farmers are expected to retire or stop farming in the next five years. It is an internationally recognised chef’s favourite known for its well-developed taste and distinct flavour, due to its diet and its season runs from January through to mid-June.

IT IS AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED CHEF’S FAVOURITE KNOWN FOR ITS WELL-DEVELOPED TASTE AND DISTINCT FLAVOUR Locally, Herdwick lamb is available from regional supermarket Booths, which works collaboratively with farmers to improve the viability and profitability of upland farming. One such farmer is fifth generation

Lakeland farmer Ian Knight. His farming team are a close and hardworking traditional family and everyone mucks in on the farm and support each other. From Ian (the boss), who does everything and more to Alan (Dad – the old boss), who keeps an eye on the new boss, to Joe (the REAL boss – aged eight), who tells the old boss and the new boss where they are all going wrong! Ian Knight says: “One of the worst things about farming is the uncertainty of the value of lamb. Working with Booths guarantees secure demand and a fair price for our Herdwick lamb. This enables farmers to plan ahead and invest in a sustainable future for their businesses.” Booths is renowned for its commitment to seasonal produce and connections with rural industry, and as the only supermarket

Spiced Butterflied Leg of Herdwick Lamb Ingredients

to stock Herdwick, it gives the hard-pressed hill farmers a premium for their stock. You can recognise a Herdwick easily as they all have a white face and white legs and their coat changes colour from black as a baby lamb to blue-grey as they get older. The rams are easy to spot too – they have horns. Herdwick wool is widely used in carpet making and also for knitwear. The fleece is also blended with Swaledale to make loft insulation. Shepherds are said to count sheep by going up to 15 or 20 and then moving a small stone from one pocket to the other before beginning again, therefore keeping score. Easter is fast approaching, so indulge in some of this Easter recipe, courtesy of Booths. n

1 leg of Herdwick lamb 50g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 4 tbsp Ras El Hanout Spice Mix 1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped 1 lemon 2 tbsp ground sumac 1 large handful flat leaf parsley, chopped 1 large bunch fresh mint, chopped Black pepper Method Melt the butter and mix in a bowl with olive oil. Stir in the Ras El Hanout Spice Mix, thyme, lemon zest and juice, sumac, parsley, mint and grind in plenty of black pepper. Place the lamb in a large shallow dish, pour over and rub in the marinade. Cover with cling film and leave to marinate in the fridge overnight. When ready to cook, light the barbecue and add the lamb (fat side down).

Cook on a fairly high heat for 5 minutes until well browned then turn over and cook for a further 5 minutes to brown the other side. Move the coals to the sides of the barbecue to reduce the heat under the meat and cook gently for 30 – 40 minutes turning occasionally until you have a crusty golden coating. Remove the meat from the barbecue and leave to rest for 10 minutes before cutting into thick slices. If you have to move your barbecue indoors simply preheat the oven to 220˚C / fan 200˚C / gas mark 7. Place the marinated lamb into a shallow roasting tin and cook on a high heat for 10 – 15 minutes then reduce the temperature to 180˚C / fan 160˚C / gas mark 4 and cook for a further 40 minutes. Why not serve alongside thick Greek yoghurt, with chopped mint and cucumber stirred through for a cooling sauce.

On a wild and wintry evening, the Coach and Horses with its warming log fires and superb, seasonal food, was our destination

O

n a recent visit to the Coach and Horses in the picturesque village of Bolton-by-Bowland, the weather was appalling, the roads a bit dodgy and the driver not happy at all. But this old coaching inn was just as picturesque and delightful as it has been for centuries. Lovingly restored to the highest standards, with a friendly welcome and warming log fires helping to fight off the winter chill, we soon forgot about the English winter raging outside. We headed to a lovely table by the bar for aperitifs and a nibble on some lovely fresh haddock goujons and tartare sauce, while we perused the refreshingly innovative menu, presented by a new chef with a great pedigree and, as it turned out, a lot of talent.

Choices made, we were shown to our table in the delightful restaurant, made particularly attractive by starched white tablecloths adding a sophisticated, but not stuffy, feel to a really attractive room. Tedd had chosen venison tartare, local venison beautifully prepared with perfect texture and seasoning. Liz beat me to the pickled herrings, rarely seen these days, and complemented by a smooth tasty cauliflower puree, finely chopped shallots, potatoes and rye bread. It was

SIMON’S

SUPPERS a wonderful combination – Marmite to some maybe, but one of our favourites. Judith had to have the handdived scallop, sweet and heavenly with a truffle gnocchi accompanied by an unctuous sauce of butter, potato and shallot. There was not much sharing going on I am sorry to report! I was hungry and opted for local pigeon breast served traditionally with celeriac croquette plus a divine hazelnut and mushroom salad – seasonal, simple and superb.

With the weather deteriorating outside we were happily hoping for a lock-in as we tucked into our main courses!

flavours, balancing a shallot and beetroot tarte Tatin with broccoli and gravy from the cooking juices – it was cooked superbly.

Salt aged beef loin, obviously carefully nurtured for a delicious tender cut, served with a braised beef cheek, celeriac fondant beautiful heritage carrots and tasty red wine jus was winter cooking at its best.

Judith is the queen of turbot and, pan fried with pink fir potatoes and a wonderful liquorice foam, didn’t disappoint. Liz opted for the local guinea fowl Kiev, beautifully tender and served with confit leg, crispy skin crumb, potato terrine and purple sprouting broccoli – a dish superbly executed and bang on for seasonality and flavour. My breast and leg of roast duckling was a triumph of

Desserts, with a little twist, included a Coach and Horses Marathon bar with rich dark chocolate, peanuts and caramel – it looked delicious! I chose a delicious passion fruit cheesecake with lychee sorbet and chocolate foam – it left me speechless! Vanilla crème brulee and a perfect apple tarte Tatin completed a really relaxed and delightful meal. We experienced great service, lovely surroundings and fabulous food. What’s not to like? Unfortunately, our transport made it through the floods so we missed out on breakfast! But, next time we will stop over in one of the seven luxurious rooms and enjoy the full Coach and Horses experience. n coachandhorsesribblevalley.co.uk

As always, Obsession provided not only a snapshot of remarkable global cuisine, but it also provided the perfect opportunity to explore the Northcote wine cellar. This year was no exception with Northcote’s Craig Bancroft matching fines wines to the stunning menus.

A TOTAL OF 21 MICHELIN STARS AND 24 CHEFS LIT UP THE FESTIVAL, WITH MANY FAMILIAR NAMES RETURNING

Each night began with Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV champagne and canapés leading into a celebration of culinary excellence. Fittingly, day one of Obsession 2020 launched with Northcote’s Executive Head Chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen presenting her menu, which included squab pigeon, followed by Cornish mussels cooked with Petrossian caviar, wild turbot, Cumbrian mutton sausage cooked with Seville orange and a dessert of hazelnut with bitter chocolate and Kaffir lime, each course matched perfectly with wines from all over the world. Among the chefs to follow on subsequent nights was Austrian born Dieter Koschina from Vila Joya and Hans Neuner from Vila Vita Parc in Portugal. Well-known TV chef Angela Hartnett of Murano in Mayfair and a regular on Saturday Kitchen, cooked on day seven of the festival. Another familiar face on TV, Monica Galetti of Mere in London, also featured in the Obsession line-up. Her love of Italian food opened her menu with a starter of tortelli pasta, duxelle, parsley, wild mushrooms and Marmite.

Day 13 of the extravaganza presented a night with the boys with celebrity chefs Rick Stein, Brian Turner and Nigel Haworth Northcote’s Chef Ambassador, each cooking individual courses. Rick Stein presented a starter of deep fried coconut prawns with papaya and habanero followed by poached red mullet with mayonnaise, tomato and tarragon.

Brian Turner cooked up a dish of English veal with mustard and sage topping, Yorkshire pudding with foie gras and onion filling and Madeira sauce, which was followed by a Yorkshire blue and Mrs Kirkham’s rarebit on toasted crumpet served with a light salad and hazelnut and sherry vinaigrette. Nigel Haworth’s courses included treacle

cured salmon with roast scallop, treacle dressing and a classic dessert – melting ginger pudding with double milk ice cream and caramel custard. Ken Hom,TV presenter and author, was another highlight at this year’s Obsession. He has consulted for hotels, restaurants and airlines and has cooked personally for presidents, prime ministers, celebrities and royalty. His menu included crispy shrimp paste chicken with cucumber and pickled radish, salt and pepper prawns, Peking duck served two ways, sweet pineapple fried rice and a warm banana compote dessert in plum wine with candied ginger served with a Japanese plum sake wine match. A champion of British cooking, Yorkshire-born James Martin, was the penultimate star chef in the Obsession 2020 line-up. With a restaurant portfolio spanning the UK he fronted the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen entertaining a devoted audience of millions and since 1917, has been the face of Saturday Morning with James Martin. As a young chef, he worked in the legendary three Michelin starred

125

kitchens of Maison Troisgros in Roanne, France, before working for Marco Pierre White at Harveys. At Obsession this year he presented a menu of crab with tomato and lovage, followed by scallop with mussels, chicken and mushroom risotto with braised Roscoff onions. After that came partridge and duck liver pithivier, wild berries and truffle sauce with an indulgent tarte tatin dessert with ice cream.

Obsession21 will return in January / February. Dates to be released soon. Sign up to the Northcote newsletter to be the first to hear all about it! Obsession came to an end with Nigel Haworth presenting his own menu on the final night. Among his dishes was a tiny Lancashire hot pot that became an iconic dish when he was declared a winner on TV’s Great British Menu. n

food&drink their exclusive TOTI signature eggs along with a huge prize egg that will be decorated with a rainbow of stripes. The chocolate-making process begins by tempering the very best quality Belgian Callebaut chocolate, as Bryan explains: “The tempering process heats the chocolate to a certain temperature. It’s an essential process that gives a beautiful sheen to it.” White, milk, dark and ruby chocolate are all tempered differently. Once the moulds have been meticulously cleaned and polished, Bryan might spray different coloured cocoa butter on the inside then a fine layer of chocolate, leaving it to dry. More chocolate is then added and the end result is a beautifully glossy, speckled egg.

I LOVE DEVELOPING IDEAS AND THE DESIGNS CAN GET QUITE TECHNICAL

THE WONDERFUL

Being ultimately creative is what lies behind Bryan’s success. He is currently working on a ‘Death by Chocolate’ project creating an egg with a skull inside. Using a silicone mould, the resulting skull is sprayed with white chocolate and is partially encased in a chocolate egg so that it is visible inside. “I love developing ideas and the designs can get quite technical. I am also a perfectionist so it’s got to be just right,” says Bryan, who is also working on a chocolate bee-hive with intricately decorated hand-painted bees on the outside. Another idea he has recently developed is creating exclusive chocolate bars for the famous chefs of Lancashire. “The chefs create their own favourite combination of ingredients. One chef has specified hazelnuts and salted caramel pearls in milk chocolate,” says Bryan, who features

W

hen chefs Bryan and Eve Townson married, they made their own petit fours creating miniature shoes and chefs’ hats as favours for their guests. It was a move that led them into the wonderful world of chocolate.

“It started off as a weekend hobby, but it has taken off and I now make for hotels and restaurants throughout the North West, as well as taking private commissions,” explains Bryan who, in the run up to Easter will make hundreds of hand-crafted eggs and bunnies, all intricately decorated to make them visually stunning – as well as being mouth-wateringly delicious! Endeavouring to keep many of his designs exclusive to specific hotels and restaurants, Bryan has worked with the Beaume family at the renowned Cartford Inn and their delicatessen TOTI for many years. This year is no exception – he will be making

a caricature of the chef on each wrapper. With Easter on the horizon, it is anticipated that Bryan and his wife Eve, who appeared on BBC’s Great British Menu, will make around 600 eggs this year. “What we do is very visual so I use Instagram and Facebook to show people what we are creating. I also look at what other chocolatiers around the world are doing.” n

SPRING AT THE INN There’s lots happening at The Cartford Inn and its on-site delicatessen and shop TOTI. Run by avid foodie Jeanie Beaume, here she tells us about Easter at the deli and the delights of shopping locally

T

OTI, which stands for Taste of the Inn, is the fabulous on-site delicatessen at The Cartford Inn. It is particularly popular at Easter time with their truly unique range of chocolate eggs. “As a little girl, I remember my parents always making an effort on Easter Sunday,” Jeanie says. “Mum and dad would organise

an exciting egg hunt for my brother and I and this happy memory at Easter will always stay with us. Today in our delicatessen I put the same efforts into creating something special and different every year for our customers. “With the help from our good friend and artisan chocolatier, Bryan Townson, we have designed some truly magnificent eggs. There is a fantastic array of milk, white, dark and even vegan Easter eggs available to choose from, as a luxury treat for yourself or for someone special. “Sustainability is important to us and this year I have created a unique design with a selection of four different delicious chocolate-filled eggs, nestled together in plastic-free packaging. Our Eco-Pâques design is inspired by happy memories at Easter with our French family,” Jeanie explains.

TOTI also has its own-brand artisan product range and are expanding this all the time with new products like chilli jam and habanero and garlic hot sauce. Jeanie says: “Many customers are excited about the return of our wild garlic pesto, which will be available from March. This is a seasonal product therefore customers can’t wait to be able to purchase this again.” n

The restaurant is passionate about food and creating a memorable dining experience. The head check and team have worked hard to achieve this rating.

MAKING THAT MOVE The season is turning, evenings are lighter and spring is in the air. It’s usually the time to think about making some changes around the home. We spoke to a local housing developer and estate agent for their thoughts and tips on making that move. Hannah Towers, head of agency and partner at Armitstead Barnett estate agents and chartered surveyors. What is the current property market like?

At this moment, the market has shown some positive signs since we had the election. Statistics say that there has been a 10 per cent increase in the number of sales agreed across the north west if you compare January 2019 and January 2020. People are making decisions and taking advice on the best marketing approaches in terms of presentation and price, they are also looking at moving to trusted and established agents all helping to start making things move.

Neil McManus is development manager for Lanley Homes. Have you seen a decrease in people buy new builds?

We have seen a continued flow of good buyers. Our developments always sell out well. What are the benefits to buying a new build?

We find more people want to move into a property that they can call their own straight away. We offer the option for people to choose their own kitchen but also all quality appliances are included, the garden is turfed and the specification is top end and it’s all in the price, so no hidden extras. How do you choose your locations for developments?

There’s not really a bad time to sell a property anymore, but homes usually look best in spring.

We choose our sites carefully. As our properties are family homes (three-four bedroom), we look for areas where there are good schools, good transport access and green space.

What should people look for in terms of location?

How do you compare to other housing developers?

We’ve noticed a lot of our buyers have differing criteria, from wanting complete privacy and off the beaten track to enjoying being closer to amenities and walking distance of pubs, shops and schools.

We build low volume, good quality housing. We are all passionate about what we do, so we ensure that what we build is what we would want to live in ourselves. I think that’s why our properties are so popular. We would also suggest to potential buyers that they look at our competitors and do their research.

Is there a good time to move to a new house?

What advice would you give for someone looking to start out on the property ladder?

Go to a professional who will offer sound advice. It’s also important you have an approachable estate agent who is forward thinking but can dig into the detail and display exceptional marketing skills. Any tips to ensure a sale?

Presentation is key. From a tidy, clean, clutter free house to colourful flowers in the garden and even painting your front door. Once you have the house sorted a good estate agent will ensure it’s well presented through photography and video. abarnett.co.uk

What should people look for in a new build property?

Layout and design of the home is important. It’s got to flow and work for you and your family. How big are the rooms? What shape are they and what space have you got outside should all be considered. Choosing a new home is a big decision, but with the right companies on board, you can find the perfect home for you. n lanleyhomes.co.uk

WHAT MAKES AGRICULTURAL LAND DIFFERENT? Solicitor Michael Rutter of Forbes explains why it is vital to consult a specialist lawyer when dealing with agricultural land and property

P

roperty is usually one of the biggest, if not the biggest, single investment that people make. This is especially true with agricultural property or land which is often a fundamental part of agricultural businesses (for example farms) or the fruits of a lifetime’s worth of work. Agricultural property can be far more specialist than many people first appreciate. For example, even the seemingly straight forward transfer of a small field can involve additional considerations such as the transfer of Entitlements (for example Single Farm Payment and the like), any applicable Agri-environmental Agreements (such as Stewardship Agreements) and Sporting Rights and Fishing Rights. Without these additional considerations, often the intended use or enjoyment of the land could be compromised and therefore these are important to make sure that what you think you are buying, you in fact get. In respect of Entitlements, these do not automatically transfer with the relevant land upon which they are claimed. This is because they are in effect personal to the particular farmer, as opposed to the land in question. On this basis it is very important to make sure that if it is intended that they transfer to you when you buy the land, which is most commonly the case, that this is provided for

in the legal documents. If this is not the case, there is a risk that they have not in fact been transferred to you. This could then involve costs of thousands of pounds to rectify if new Entitlements have to be bought from the relevant authority (currently the Rural Payments Agency). There are also strict deadlines in relation to how and when Entitlements can be claimed.Your solicitor should advise you as to any necessary arrangements, particularly if any apportionments are needed, so that you can comply with the same. Similarly, it is important that any Agrienvironmental Agreements are transferred and to ensure that any payments due under the same and associated obligations, are passed to you. It is therefore very important that you have full knowledge of any obligations in such Agreements as you will have to adhere to these moving forwards, and that you have the benefit of any payments due under the same to which you may be entitled. Agreements for Sporting and Fishing Rights can be crucial to the use and enjoyment of agricultural land and it is easy to presume that these rights will automatically pass or belong to the owner of the land when in fact they are leased out to a third party. This means it is very important to carry

out full enquiries with the seller to ensure that all the rights you believe you are buying along with the land, are indeed included and not subject to any adverse third-party rights. Additionally, raising agricultural specific enquiries can uncover any issues – usually arising from the current or historic use of the land for agriculture. Often farming practices can involve potential contamination of the land, mainly due to the materials used, and can also require certain permits and authorities due to the nature of the practices. Standard commercial or residential enquiries would not necessarily identify such agricultural specific matters. Obtaining specialist advice can ensure that the right questions are asked so that any issues are dealt with to make sure that the property being bought is what is expected (therefore ensuring that the grass is greener on the other side). Forbes Solicitors offer a specialist agricultural service, which is tailored to give specialist advice to ensure that any issues along with the stress and hassle of buying agricultural property are taken care of. n For information please contact solicitor Michael Rutter by email: michael.rutter@forbessolicitors. co.uk or call on 0333 207 1130

property • The development would represent the optimal viable use of a heritage asset • The development would re-use redundant or disused buildings, enhancing its setting • The development would involve the subdivision of an existing residential dwelling or • The design is of exceptional quality, in that it: – Is truly outstanding or innovative, reflecting the highest standards in architecture, and would help raise standards of design in rural areas – Would significantly enhance its immediate setting and be sensitive to the defining characteristics of the local area. UNIQUE SITES Are you a land-owner and want to either self-build, complete a development or sell your land with planning approval?

A

t ZMA we have a number of sites within greenbelt, open countryside and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty across Lancashire and the Ribble Valley. Each site is unique and has its limitations. What you can do with your land is dependent on national and local planning policies associated with the site’s location. Sometimes sites next to each other will have different limitations, one site may lie within a settlement boundary and one may lie within greenbelt. It is advisable to contact a qualified consultant to provide you with guidance to understand the potential, site constraints and likelihood of gaining approval prior to making any planning submissions. At ZMA we offer a free consultation providing initial advice on land or project.

Our client base varies from families wanting to build their dream home, farmers wanting to sell land with planning approval and developers gaining approval for medium to large scale sites. The value of a site can vary from £10,000 per acre without planning approval and £100,000 per acre with planning approval. Therefore, some of our clients with no development experience opt to sell with planning approval. If you own land which is located within a settlement boundary, or brownfield, it is likely that planning approval will be gained. Land within open countryside or greenbelt, is not as simple. If you wish to gain approval for one dwelling to build a home, or sell with planning approval for a dwelling and your site is classed as isolated (located in countryside, outside the settlement boundary, or not located near to a village) then one or more of the following circumstances needs to apply: • There is essential need for a rural worker, including those taking control of a farm business, to live permanently at or near their place of work

• Buildings for outdoor sport or recreation • Extensions and alterations to a building, provided that it does not result in disproportionate additions over and above the size of the original building • Demolishing a building and constructing a new building, provided the new building is in the same use and not larger than the one it replaces • Limited infilling within villages • Limited affordable housing for local community needs, including rural exception sites • Limited infilling or the partial or complete redevelopment of previously developed land, which would not have a greater impact on the openness than the existing development; or not cause substantial harm to the openness of the greenbelt. We have different fee structures to suit each project from a percentage of the sale value, a fixed fee, or a no win no fee. Get in touch with ZMA to book your free consultation. n
