Magazines Editor We are having to adapt to doing things differently and it is looking like this will now be long term. While not all businesses are fully open, it’s important that we do support local organisations in our towns where we can. In our main feature we take a look at the effect of Covid on the entertainment sector and how our arts, theatres and entertainers in the region are struggling both financially and with the emotional impact on staff. While audiences might be small or even non-existent, many have opted to go down the route of digital by showing some activities on-line or setting up educational workshops for young people. Over the last few months, lots of people have been growing their own fruit and veg, in fact the Royal Horticultural Society reports a five-fold increase in requests for advice and seedsmen have had a bumper year. But once you’ve grown it all, what do you do with too much lockdown veg? Writer Stephanie Sparrow gives us some ideas and inspiration from pickling to adding vegetables into broths and stews. Speaking of veg our charity story is about Let’s Grow Preston, an environmental charity, helping local communities brighten up their areas and neighbourhoods with a wide range of planting. If you take a trip out to Lytham, why not stop off at Lytham Hall. Just a short stroll from the centre this hidden gem is nestled in 78 acres of beautiful historic parkland and is a Grade 1 listed building. Have you been keeping yourself busy during lockdown? Lots have, with improvements to the home and garden as it’s been a chance to make those changes that have been on your list for ever. But which improvements are the best ones to add value to your home? Read our article for some tips. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Live Preston & Fylde magazine. Tracy Hargreaves Editor

A second Kitchen Design Centre kitchen for a period property When Lindsey and Mike moved to their dream home: a stunning period house in Saddleworth, they turned to designer John Crosby at kitchen Design Centre again as he’d done the kitchen in their previous house. Keen to do the fabulous house and all it’s period features justice, they asked John to design the kitchen, making the most of the high ceilings, ornate coving and sash windows. In stark contrast to their previous kitchen which was white, John went for a dark palate and took advantage of the high ceilings by including ultra-high tall bank units in ‘Meteor’ Black Steel. The units on the island were contrasted in a lighter Lazer Soft Taupe and these were perfectly enhanced with a Silestone Cemento Spa worktop in a suede finish. The square room has large sash windows on two walls so to incorporate plenty of storage and to reflect the shape of the room, John included a large ‘L’ shaped island which was finished with a breakfast bar in Toronto Cognac Vintage Oak. A key piece in the kitchen is a free-standing cabinet with a Caple Wine Cooler built in. Made of the same Toronto Cognac Vintage Oak, it mirrors the wood on the breakfast bar. Lindsey had Neff appliances in her previous kitchen Design Centre kitchen and loved them so naturally chose them again in her new one. She’s delighted with the appliances and the finished space, “ I loved my old Kitchen Design Centre kitchen that John designed so when we moved there was only one company I wanted to do the new kitchen. The brief was for the kitchen to suit the house and John’s first design was spot on, requiring just a few tweaks. The finished room is incredible. It has the wow factor and really does the house justice.”

Designer John Crosby says: “It was great to design another kitchen for Lindsey and Mike. As soon as I saw the house and the room I knew I could create something special. The period features and ceiling height lent itself perfectly to this design and I’m delighted with the finished kitchen.”

WE NEED TO SURVIVE That’s the message that many entertainers, theatre performers and actors are shouting about after Covid-19 has hit their industry hard. With many relying on grants, donations and reduced ticket sales, will it be enough to keep the arts alive

WE WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL SAFE COMING BACK TO OUR THEATRE But during the 1970s The Grand Theatre wasn’t as popular with the public and it was going to close and be transformed into a Littlewoods store, it spent 10 years

as a bingo hall before the local people of Blackpool joined forces and bought the building from its then owners EMI in 1981 to see it reopen as a theatre. It has been operating ever since as a charity. Before the pandemic, The Grand was putting on around 300 to 400 performances over 12 months, selling 130,000 tickets. © Blackpool Grand Theatre | Photographer: Sean Conboy

spoke with several organisations within the arts and entertainment sector to get their thoughts. First up is chief executive of The Grand Theatre, Blackpool, Ruth Eastwood, who talked about its history and plans for the future. The Grand opened in 1894 and is 126 years old. It is one of only 23 theatres left in the UK designed by Frank Matcham that is still operational. Throughout its life, it has evolved into many things. From a

lyric house when it first opened to a music hall, in the 1930s it became a playhouse, showcasing a range of famous actors including Laurence Olivier and during the second world war, when the theatres in London were closed, it remained open. The 1950s and 60s saw the theatre move into holiday variety shows, while the 70s hosted the summer time specials that were also shown on TV.

“We earned 91 per cent of our income through ticket and alcohol sales with a £3m turnover. When we were told to close on 17th March 2020, all income stopped except for the job retention scheme and we had to furlough 57 staff. As well as staff, we also have the upkeep of the building to maintain due to its age,” says Ruth. “There are five stages the government has outlined before theatres can return and we are currently on stage four, which is where live performances can return if social distancing means it is safe to do so, but we still have a long way to go. We have moved our pantomime into 2021 but won’t know until nearer the time if this is viable.

F “Currently we have four objectives: to protect the building, retain our charitable status, not go insolvent and be ready to open when it is viable to do so. “We want people to feel safe coming back to our theatre. They can support us through buying a ticket for a show, naming a seat, legacy giving or simply using Amazon’s smile website.” Despite not showing live performances Blackpool Grand is still engaging with audiences through the digital age. One significant way it has adapted is through the creation of its Youtube channel ‘At Home With You’, which has provided a creative hub for inspiration and activity for all ages. From yoga sessions to theatrical makeup tutorials. The theatre’s YouTube page is a demonstration of a business brought to a complete halt overnight flipping their business strategy with rapid speed and finding other outlets to engage with their loyal audience. blackpoolgrand.co.uk

or a much smaller theatre, Chorley Little Theatre has been hit just as hard. Ian Robinson of the theatre says: “Last year was our best-attended ever and we’ve been building an extension which was due for completion around Easter 2020. With everything in lockdown that project is now on hold as we have to conserve our resources. We’ve cut back on as many outgoings as possible, but still have a 110-year-old building to look after. “Dozens of shows have had to be cancelled and others have been rescheduled. Sadly, we’ve had to postpone the December 2020 Pantomime, The Snow Queen, for a full 12 months as we weren’t sure we’d be able to stage it this year. The Panto is a big money-maker for us, so this is another blow. “During lockdown we’ve created a series of monologues from home, called Our Voices, which are freely available on our YouTube channel. As we couldn’t show films, we also put together Family Movie Packs consisting of a new DVD, popcorn, sweets and activity sheets for families across Chorley, distributed by the food bank at Living Waters. “We hope to re-open sometime in the

autumn, but social distancing in a building of this age is hard to work out and with reduced audience capacity we may only make enough money to cover costs. But it’s important to re-open and be back among the community, and welcome audiences back safely. It’s been sad not seeing our regular faces, and also not getting to see our volunteers for months. Hopefully they’ll all come back over the coming months.

THIS HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WE’VE FACED BUT WE WILL COME THROUGH IT, AND WELCOME AUDIENCES BACK SOON “This has been the biggest challenge we’ve faced but we will come through it, and welcome audiences back soon. The support we’ve had from them has really kept us going and inspired us to make sure we survive.” Our main income over the last few months has been our GoFundMe, and without it we probably would have closed. We’re still taking donations, so for details, visit: www.gofundme.com/f/chorleytheatrefund

or those who love opera, they will also have to wait to see a performance. Preston Opera’s Chairman Kevin Hesketh explains more: “Preston Opera abandoned its rehearsals for Carmen in early March. This led to our production being postponed first to October 2020 then June 2021. Since then we started holding committee meetings on Zoom, initially with only part of the committee able to join, but now with virtually full participation as people get used to what is a new technology for many. We have also organised social activities on Zoom, starting with a musical get-together on the day when we should have all sat down with the orchestra for the Sitzprobe rehearsal. We followed that with two quiz events, both of which gave one of our principals an opportunity to tell us some anecdotes from when he sang under Leonard Bernstein.

SINGING IS UNFORTUNATELY ONE THE HIGHEST RISK ACTIVITIES AND MAY BE ONE OF THE LAST TO RETURN TO FULL NORMALITY Our next Zoom event will be an interview with soprano Amanda Roocroft in mid-September and we will follow that with Zoom rehearsals leading hopefully to a Zoom concert in November. Our music director Helen Harrison is full of great ideas as to how we might do this. This will get us singing again and will help people to feel that they still belong and it might even lead to possibilities for the future, when sections of the chorus might be able to rehearse the tricky sections outside the normal rehearsals. We are now starting to look at what we’ll need to do to get rehearsals under way.

Along with all other groups we’ll have to see how we could implement a Covid-19 risk assessment, liaising with members and the rehearsal venues. The measures we may have to consider include singing with masks, which a lot of people might not be keen on. Many of our members are likely to have been shielding and I think that we can expect reduced numbers at least initially, until the situation improves and people get to feel more comfortable. Singing is unfortunately one the highest risk activities and may be one of the last to return to full normality. Our attitude is to remain flexible so that we can respond to the changing situation and not get downhearted if the virus doesn’t go away as quickly as we’d like. With low outgoings and a healthy reserve, Preston Opera can certainly ride out the storm, so we are perhaps much more fortunate than many professional organisations who are struggling.

omedian Phil Walker is like all the other comedians and entertainers, seeing all his live work collapse monthly, not knowing when or even if it would ever return has been very hard to bear both financially and mentally. Luckily for Phil, he has a lovely family who he has enjoyed spending quality time with on long walks near his home on the Fylde coast. “I also reignited my love for cycling which was great for me mentally, I even managed to cycle from Blackpool to Scarborough in a day to raise some money for a charity, so it was nice to have something to train for. I have written another children’s book to follow my last one that we will

be published very soon. “I was however, really saddened to learn that my annual pantomime has now also gone due to the shows not being viable financially under current social distancing laws in theatres, so this December it’s going to be odd not running around a stage somewhere like a madman for four hours a day!

SO, LET’S HOPE THE ‘OLD NORMAL’ REPLACES THE ‘NEW NORMAL’ AND WE CAN ALL GET BACK TO WHAT WE DO VERY SOON “That said we have managed, with the help of the people at the Lowther Pavilion in Lytham to attempt to try getting some live work back in some form. In July and August we did two “Drive in” comedy shows that were attended really well and enjoyed by all who came, although it was a really strange experience as a comedian playing to people sat in their cars, Getting a honk from a car replacing a laugh was very surreal indeed! “We did have a few brave souls socially distanced seated on camp chairs at the front of the stage in the rain and that proved to me just how much the public are longing for live entertainment. From early September we will be moving indoors with the comedy nights, I am delighted to say with limited capacity seating and the initial response ticket sales wise has been very encouraging. “So, let’s hope the ‘old normal’ replaces the ‘new normal’ and we can all get back to what we do very soon.” n Details of all the forthcoming shows for Woofers Comedy Club can be found on: lowtherpavilion.co.uk

W

hether it’s simply a refresh to your walls or a full-blown makeover, keeping on top of your home can be a fulltime job. But what are the improvements to make that will make a difference and add value to your property at the same time? Before you start any renovations, find out the value of your property and adjust your spend on improvements accordingly. You don’t want to invest £100,000 on changes when it won’t reflect in the price, as it won’t be value for money. The kitchen is the hub of the home where most of us spend our time, but it can also be the most expensive if you’re looking to upgrade. A fresh lick of paint, new accessories and new flooring can make a massive difference. With energy bills increasing, consider solar panels. They can be expensive to install but you need to plan on staying in your home for at least five years to get the benefit back. Change all your bulbs to energy saving bulbs and look to replace your boiler to a more efficient one and check your loft insulation. If your appliances need changing, make sure you get energy efficient ones.

The last few months have seen many people take up new hobbies or get fit, but it’s also been a chance to make those changes to the home and garden that have been on your list for ever Look at the layout of your home and does it match the way you live. Sometimes it makes sense to change round rooms and make use of smaller rooms that are often just used to dump things you don’t use daily.

A FRESH LICK OF PAINT, NEW ACCESSORIES AND NEW FLOORING CAN MAKE A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE

Keep on top of the exterior. How do you feel pulling up on the drive, does it look inviting? It might just be a case of adding some flowering pots and hanging baskets at the entrance or changing your front door to a more modern version. But adding a new driveway can add thousands of pounds. Research eco-friendly driveways, yes, they do exist. Grassguard® is an innovative way to manage heavy rainfall in a sustainable way while retaining all the environmental benefits of a natural grass area. Restore or repair any period features, buyers will pay more for original features. Rather than do it yourself you might want to invest in a specialist to ensure a good job. Have you got space outside for a garden room? These are on the increase, whether you use it as a home office, summer house, gym, or your own wine and gin bar, it’s an extra room that can be utilised. n

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME With no need to prime or sand, Chalk Paint™ is incredibly easy to use and the results are remarkable

H

arness the power of Chalk Paint™ to transform your home, from introducing colour and velvety texture to high street furniture, to adding pattern and personality to simple white floor tiles. “Without the need to prime or sand, painting MDF or metal furniture with Chalk Paint™ is all in a day’s work,” explains Annie Sloan. “Painting on floor tiles is also incredibly easy – the only skill you need is patience. “As tiles are non-porous, Chalk Paint™ requires a longer drying and curing window than usual. Leave plenty of time between coats and even longer before sealing with Chalk Paint™ Lacquer to finish and protect. “On flooring, a minimum of two coats of lacquer is recommended for maximum durability.Work methodically and thoroughly, tile by tile, to ensure you haven’t missed a spot. The full curing period for lacquer is 14 days, so take care not to scratch, chip or expose your newly beautiful tiles during this time. If you’re able, paint tiles before laying them, to allow the longest curing time for your handywork,” concludes Annie. n Chalk Paint™ from £5.95. Tiles: Antoinette and Barcelona Orange. Chairs: English Yellow. Table: Athenian Black. Chalk Paint™ Lacquer £21.95. Seat pads and napkins in Graphite ticking £34.95 per metre.

JAPANESE GARDEN SECRETS Two events at Tatton Park are celebrating the 100-year legacy of their internationally renowned Japanese garden

L

earn all about Tatton Park’s story at the fascinating Mansion exhibition, followed by a visit to the Japanese garden. Thanks to a series of photographs taken at the time of its construction in 1910, along with original plans and drawings, this new exhibition shares some of the secrets of the Japanese garden, how it was built and the meaning behind its design, materials and symbols. Alan de Tatton Egerton, 3rd Baron Egerton of Tatton (1845-1920) visited the 1910 Japanese-British Exhibition in London, and was so inspired by what he saw, he decided to introduce his own Japanese garden at Tatton. What was created over 100 years ago remains, to this day, one of the finest examples of a Japanese garden in Europe. The legacy Alan left behind is a visual spectacle in all seasons, and Tatton’s gardeners help ensure it is still here for visitors to enjoy for another 100 years.

Japanese Garden: The Legacy of Alan de Tatton Exhibition runs Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm until 5pm until 1st November and is included in your Mansion entry ticket. The gardens are open every day from 10am-6pm until the end of October. Tickets and timeslots for both the Mansion and gardens must be booked online in advance at www.tattonpark.org.uk In the absence of the ‘real’ flower show this year, rhs.org.uk hosted a virtual

event called Tatton Park at Home in July. Tatton Park’s very own Head Gardener was among the list of experts featured in their online celebration of all-things gardening. Simon Tetlow’s film shares rare views inside the hidden world of the Japanese garden, plus advice for viewers on how to create an authentic feeling in your own Japanese garden at home. n rhs.org.uk/tattonathome

introduce so think about painting the walls and possibly installing a mirror on one of them, that you can plant around to soften the edges. That will reflect and make the most of any light there is.

THE BEAUTY OF BASEMENT GARDENS Photography: Can Stock Photo LianeM

Basement outside spaces are often thought of as dingy and dark, but there’s a lot you can do to transform them into stunning living environments

A

Photography: Can Stock Photo

basement flat garden may not be big and may not get a lot of sunlight, but with a little effort you can create a mini oasis where you can sit and chill out surrounded by foliage and flowers. Start with the floor surface. A lot of basements spaces have concrete floors which are not ideal for creating relaxing and

beautiful environments. Gravel is an easy and simple covering that works well over concrete – just remember to keep drain covers clear. Decking is another alternative and the perfect material for a family space or for entertaining. You could lay some bricks, tiles or slabs, but make sure you position them below the airbricks of the house and any damp-proof course. You need to get creative when it comes to garden furniture and pots. Think small for furniture and big for pots. In a small space, there is a tendency to use small pots, but in general, the smaller the space, the bigger the plants, the bigger the pots. Brighten up the walls. The gloomier the basement, the more light you will want to

Utilise your wall space. Attaching trellis for climbing plants or wall baskets provides your plants with space to grow upwards, and the addition of a wall fountain can make everything even more idyllic with the soothing sound of flowing water. A living green wall of shade-loving plants will fill the space with colour and seasonal fragrance and, with careful selection of plants, a green wall is something that will look good throughout the year. Right plant, right place. Fatsias, choisyas, aucubas, skimmias, viburnum tinus and fuchsias all grow well in shade or dappled shade, and acers and azaleas are at their happiest in light shade. Climbers such as the climbing hydrangea, winter jasmine and all sorts of ivy, along with many clematis, thrive in the shade as well. There are even several climbing roses that blossom in low light such as the scented, double scarlet-flowered Danse du Feu and Madame Alfred Carrière with creamy white fragrant flowers. n

For those with outside spaces that are slightly bigger than a basement, roses are on the list of gardening jobs for September from the Royal Horticultural Society: • Continue to deadhead roses, dahlias and delphiniums to prolong flowering • Collect and sow seeds from perennials and hardy annuals • Net ponds before leaf fall starts • Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damages spoils them • Start to reduce houseplant watering • Plant spring flowering bulbs • Clean out cold frames and greenhouses ready for autumn use • Prune bush and climbing roses

AHEAD OF THE GAME Established for over 20 years, award winning company Prefix Systems Ltd has grown from one to four manufacturing sites. Pre-lockdown, Gail Bailey visited the Blackburn Head Office and showroom to find out more. Photography: Roger Moore

F

ounded in 1996 by Chris Baron and Chris Cooke, Prefix Systems has grown to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of a wide variety of home improvement systems including aluminium windows and doors and glazed and tiled roof home extensions. With a business ethos based on first class service combined with high level of before and after sales support, Prefix moved to larger premises in 1999 and gradually evolved opening its second distribution premises in Northampton in 2006 to allow the

company to distribute nationally, then a third in Swansea in 2008 and the South Coast in 2017. “We can now deliver to any part of mainland UK and our own delivery fleet can deliver direct to premises or to any site,” they explain.

MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE NOW CHOOSING TO WORK FROM HOME, OR ARE KEEN TO EXTEND THEIR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES A company that never stands still, Prefix realised the benefit to both trade and homeowners of having showrooms for consumers to visit: “Our expert staff are on hand and customers can visit to see products on display. “In more normal times there is no appointment needed and we have no salesman – just the opportunity to see products such as sliding and bi-folding doors, windows and hardware, with

We have 25 years’ experience of home improvement products, single storey extensions, orangeries, tiled roofs, canopies and verandas. Due to Covid-19, we do ask that you call us to book an appointment as we are limited to the number of visitors we can have in the showroom.” The company can also put customers in touch with local installers who they work with, or clients can source their own installer or builder. Prefix have developed their own unique aluminium brand of windows and doors, Opal. Aluminium has recently become the choice over PVC for a number of reasons including primarily it’s longevity – aluminium lasts up to 50 years, nearly double that of PVC. Along with this it is stronger and more durable, more secure, energy efficient and heat resistant. “There are also many more colour choices, finishes and textures with our Opal Aluminium range compared to PVC. We include a powder coating which ensures long lasting colour and performance,” Chris Baron explains. Understanding lifestyle changes and customer needs is key to the success of Prefix Systems and they have a clear vision and understanding of how work and home lives are changing: “Many more people

The company has won numerous awards and one they are especially proud of is the recent ‘Best Solid Roof Award’ at the Conservatory & Orangery Awards. “We are honoured to receive any award,” Chris Cooke says. “But it is particularly important to be recognised by your peers.” Prefix Systems Ltd was also the only company to win three awards in one night at the prestigious Red Rose Awards. “We feel we won the awards because we are different,” Chris Baron explains. “Innovation is hugely important to us and we never stand still – from creating our own Opal aluminium range to working with revolutionary new products such as heated glass which removes the need for radiators and underfloor heating.” The company is also beginning to work with virtual reality software which will allow customers to view 3D CAD drawings for single storey extensions and they also have online designer programmes where clients can design their own front door. Partner feedback adds further testimony to the company’s outstanding product design, quality and service: “Prefix Systems are absolute experts, they provide quality not just in their products but also in their service,” was one comment at the opening of the showroom with another adding: “The company is ahead of the game in terms of engineering, as well as being fantastic to work with.” n

Under the current circumstances, the showroom is now by appointment only so we can accommodate visitors safely. Our opening times are: Monday to Thursday: 9am-5pm Friday: 9am-4pm Weekends by appointment

Packaged with no plastic in simple brown boxes, the lights are protected with loose fill paper and posted in eco-friendly parcel bags made from Coex, a 100 per cent natural product. Using a CNC routing machine, the birch plywood parts are cut so you can see the natural layers of the wood. They are all cleverly designed to slot together, so no fixing is needed. Available in five unique designs Welsh Cottage, Lighthouse, Star Tent, Townhouse and Woodland, with a choice of three different fabric cable colours – natural jute, olive green and mustard yellow, plus a high-quality LED bulb, they offer the perfect choice of lighting for a design-led eco-conscious home. Following a decade working in the city, Bright Corner founder, artist and designer Chloe Harrison decided to leave the fastpaced life to concentrate on her young family and follow her creative passion. After having her first baby, she could not find a well-designed, eco-friendly, natural light for her baby’s room. So, she started sketching ideas to design her own. She then launched Bright Corner in 2018 with a range of lights designed for children and adults. Bright Corner believes in supporting small independent businesses and are proud that all their products are designed and manufactured in the UK and made by people that care. n

THE NEW FACE OF BEAUTY TREATMENTS

H

aving surgery to make us look good, usually meant going under the knife at a private hospital, but now non-invasive treatment is proving popular at your local salon. Money.co.uk found that the top 10 non-surgical treatments that were searched for online were: Microdermabrasion, Hyaluronic acid, lip fillers, coolsculpting, cryotherapy, tattoo removal, Juvederm, hair removal, restylane and dermabrasion.

With the aesthetics and cosmetic surgery industry set to be worth over £41 billion by 2027, a report from finance experts at money.co.uk reveal which procedures are the most searched for and which have been on the rise since Covid-19 had us all working from the kitchen table

While non-invasive treatments are now considered normal and part of our personal health and wellbeing, some treatments are required for medical reasons. Various veins for example can be painful, but modern procedures make it easy to treat locally, without having to travel to Manchester or beyond. However, it’s important before considering any treatment, invasive or non-invasive, that you do your research. Visit salons or private clinics and get a feel for the place and check

out reviews, even better if you know people who have been before. Check out the person doing the treatment has the necessary qualifications, as there are still a number of practitioners who are not regulated. Always get a free consultation so you can discuss your options and whether you are looking for temporary or permanent results. Private clinics will offer a bigger range of treatments, including weight loss programmes and gastric band surgery to breast enlargements and men’s health issues. The way we want to look and feel is constantly changing with new innovative treatments becoming more easily available, at cost effective prices. What’s more the surge in popularity of non-surgical treatments is now widely accepted amongst all age groups and not just by women either. So as we are living longer, we want to remain looking good for as long as possible. n

ydia Pennington from Longton has been a hairdresser for the past 12 years, gaining vast experience as a trainee for Headlines, as well as going on to become a master colourist for Schwarzkopf. Lydia opened her business, L Francesca, in February this year after transforming a ground floor unit off Liverpool Road into a luxurious hair salon with a bespoke interior, where anyone would want to go to feel relaxed and pampered. It is the first salon for the blossoming businesswoman. “I had been looking for the perfect location to open my own salon for a while when this unit in the heart of Longton became available. It just made sense that I would go back to

the village that I know so well. “I’ve always wanted my own beautiful salon where people enjoyed going. It should still feel like a treat having your hair done and it’s my job to make you feel like a million dollars. Unfortunately, not long after we opened, we had to close due to Covid-19, but I’m now back up and running and looking forward to helping people feel like those million dollars. It’s been a difficult time for everyone but it’s amazing how good you feel after a good style and treatment.”

BACK TO YOUR BEST This professional clinic will boost your post-lockdown confidence and make you feel ready to face the world, writes Kate Ford. Photography: Roger Moore

W

hen lockdown arrived in March, Liv Hindmoor suddenly found herself having to postpone all her appointments for the foreseeable future. Liv runs her own professional clinic, 3D Aesthetics Ltd, offering a range of face and body treatments, so the diary was crammed with clients wanting to be ready for spring and summer. A recognised specialist in non-invasive, non-surgical treatments, Liv also offers a range of injectable treatments delivered by a professional nurse. “Spring is one of our busiest times,” she says, “with both men and women seeking a confidence boost, after putting on weight or noticing their skin looks pale and tired.” Determined to be prepared for the lifting of restrictions, Liv used lockdown to improve her already hugely popular inch-loss package. “I’d heard from so many clients that they’d put on weight during lockdown and couldn’t wait to come and see me,” explains Liv. “So, I decided to refine the inch-loss programme, making it more structured to enable even better results.” The new package lasts seven weeks and combines all the clinic’s non-invasive, 3D Lipo treatments including fat freezing, ultrasound and using radiowaves, to treat

the whole lower abdomen area. Between them, the therapies work effectively to target problem areas and break down fat cells completely, enabling the body to dispose of them.

I CAN HONESTLY SAY I’VE NEVER HAD A DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER FROM MY INCH-LOSS TREATMENTS “The seven-week course covers the whole lower abdomen, waist, hips and ‘under bum’ area,” says Liv. “The results are really impressive. I can honestly say I’ve never had a disappointed customer from my inch-loss treatments.” Sold separately, the treatments would be over £600 but Liv is offering this new package for just £340, and it’s proving extremely popular. “As soon as it was announced we could reopen, my phone started ringing with both new and existing clients wanting to come in,” she says. As you’d expect, Liv is meticulous

about safety, providing sanitising stations, limiting waiting areas to one client only and disinfecting treatment areas between clients. During treatments, Liv wears full PPE of gloves, mask, visor and apron, and customers are currently required to wear a mask. At the time of writing, Preston is still under local restrictions, so Liv is unable to offer facial treatments, like the famous HIFU, non-surgical facelift and her own very popular ‘Express Microdermabrasion’. She keeps a watchful eye on government announcements and will let clients know through Instagram and Facebook when she is able to offer all treatments. “We can’t wait to get back to normal, but we must take it one step at a time to keep everyone safe,” says Liv. “Clients can book inch-loss now and can pay a deposit to secure a priority facial booking for when restrictions are lifted.” n You can get in touch by phone or use the new booking system at https://3d.bookinbeautiful.com/ and on Facebook and Instagram @3daesthicsltd

During the consultation, Mr Dunkow established key information about Paul’s symptoms, his lifestyle and career. Taking a careful, considered approach, and following an MRI scan and x-rays, Mr Dunkow recommended a course of intensive sports physiotherapy, which would enable Paul to avoid surgery. The treatment involved a programme of massage, joint manipulation, stretching and exercises with a sports physiotherapist designed to relieve the pressure on Paul’s spine, loosen tight muscles and ligaments, and strengthen core muscles.

THE SUCCESS IN THIS CASE REFLECTS THE CONSIDERED, INDIVIDUAL APPROACH OF OUR CONSULTANT

PAIN FREE AND FLYING HIGH A leading test pilot is back in the cockpit despite a career threatening spinal injury, thanks to expert treatment from a Blackpool private hospital, writes Kate Ford

hen Commander Paul Stone suffered a second prolapsed disc in three years, he knew that, if surgery was his only option, it would probably end his flying career. This was devastating news for Paul who, after 20 years with the Royal Navy, had joined BAE Systems, first as chief test pilot and later as its director of flight operations. Paul, 53, from Lytham St Annes, turned to Spire Fylde Coast Hospital in Blackpool for help and was seen by consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Paul Dunkow. “That was in 2018, after my second prolapsed disc, and I was in tremendous pain. The injury had been building up over time, ever since my first prolapsed disc diagnosis in 2012,” says Paul. “At times, the pain in my back was excruciating and I couldn’t work. It was also clear that, because the pain was gradually worsening, it would eventually affect my ability to operate as a pilot.”

The strategy was a success and, 18 months later, Paul says he is pain free and has been able to continue with his passion for flying as a career. He’s even taken on a new role as chief pilot for the national Shuttleworth Collection of historic planes, based in Bedfordshire. This charity organisation is dedicated to preserving the heritage of vintage aircraft including a World War 2 Spitfire and the world’s oldest plane, the Blério monoplane. Mr Dunkow said: “Paul’s injury was very severe, but we always consider all the options and, given Paul’s existing fitness levels and career, we decided on physiotherapy to see if we could avoid surgery. We’re all delighted with the results.” Spire Fylde Coast Hospital director, Tracey Jackson, added: “The success in this case reflects the considered, individual approach of our consultant who understood that, for this particular patient, it was far preferable to avoid surgery.” In a remarkable demonstration of the success of his treatment, Paul recently completed a three-week climbing expedition in the Andes. He says: “I’m so grateful to Spire and to Paul Dunkow for the way they approached my treatment, most significantly finding a way to manage my condition without life-changing surgery, as this meant I was able to continue flying.” “I’m in no doubt that Spire Fylde Coast Hospital has saved my career.” n Spire Fylde Coast Hospital St. Walburgas Road, Blackpool FY3 8BP 01253 394188 spirehealthcare.com/spire-fylde-coast-hospital

A HIDDEN GEM If you’re visiting Lytham, you may not be aware that it has its own hall. Full of history, with lots of stories to tell, this elegant building is well worth a visit

J

ust a short stroll from Lytham town centre, nestling in 78 acres of beautiful historic parkland is Lytham Hall. It is a Grade 1 listed building and is the finest Georgian House in Lancashire. In the 12th century it was originally a Benedictine Priory and eventually a Jacobean Hall was built. Parts of the old buildings remain, and it is therefore of great archaeological and historical interest. In the 18th century Thomas Carr of York designed the stunning Palladian house we see today. Four generations of the very colourful Clifton family have lived here, and the beautiful interior, pictures and artefacts tell their amazing story.

The fortunes of the Clifton family remained buoyant and great refurbishments took place at the hall between 1790 and 1830. A downturn in the family fortunes however was exacerbated by the profligate spending of John Talbot Clifton (1868-1928) and his son Henry Talbot de Verre Clifton.

WE ARE OPEN NOW AND DETERMINED TO COME BACK STRONGER THAN EVER In 1968 the hall was sold to the Guardian Royal Insurance Company for office use. In 1997 when it came up for sale again it was bought by the charity, Lytham Town Trust with the help of a donation from BAE Systems. A 99-year lease was agreed with The Heritage Trust for the North West for them to manage the hall and its grounds. In 1997 the Friends of Lytham Hall was formed. It is an independent charity whose sole aim is to support the hall by raising funds through events and grant applications. Masked balls, summer lunches, Christmas dinners and many other events have been

lifestyle

59

organised over the years. The £250,000 raised to date, has been given to the hall to help purchase Clifton family artefacts, help to fund the painting of the hall, lay paths and buy a Land Rover for use in the grounds. Many other restoration projects, large and small have been supported by the Friends. The old Privy was restored to reveal seats for two, so no social distancing here!

The pond at the rear of the hall was dug out and a mound was formed with the soil and put over the old ice-house. The ice-house would have provided cold storage for fresh food used by the hall. The volunteers have cleverly built steps to the top of the mound for visitors to climb and enjoy a wonderful view of the hall and the estate.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING TO KEEP THIS STUNNING PLACE ALIVE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME The managers and staff at the hall have worked tirelessly over the past few years to conserve and restore this special place. Even in lockdown, work continued behind the huge iron gates and the painting of the outside of the hall was at last completed in its original colours. The badly eroding drive was replaced with the help of Fylde Borough Council and a stunning exhibition of the explorer John Talbot Clifton was funded by the Lytham Heritage Group and was placed at the hall. As the estate can no longer afford a huge staff of servants, a willing band of over 250 volunteers have stepped in! With their wealth of talents and great determination they have created beautiful gardens and maintained the woodland paths and the parkland. The kitchen garden is flourishing and is producing plenty of fresh produce. Volunteer guides also give lively and interesting tours of the hall and grounds. They also serve in the ever-popular cafe, where customers can dine inside or on the lawn, which is surrounded by the beautiful garden hub and a small antiques centre. The friendly pigs, boars, giant rabbits and the Pigmy goats love to welcome visitors to their home just behind the cafe lawn.

In late February, the lead volunteer for the grounds set up several wildlife cameras which were triggered by movement and body heat. He was amazed by the diversity of wildlife in the grounds of the hall, obviously enjoying the freedom and peace and quiet of lockdown. Deer, foxes, hares, rabbits, squirrels and a huge variety of birds were captured on the cameras. The pictures and videos throughout the seasons will also show the stunning displays of snowdrops, bluebells and swathes of native English daffodils which enhance the beauty of the grounds.

The hall manager Peter Anthony said: “During lockdown Lytham Proms, the steam rally, weddings, open air theatres, concerts and many other events have had to be cancelled. This has led to a serious loss of much needed revenue, but we are open now and determined to come back stronger than ever.” Lytham Hall and grounds are a wonderful place for a quiet stroll (well behaved dogs and lively children welcome) to explore the woods, climb the mound, rest by the lake or step back in time with the Clifton family in the stunning Georgian Hall. We look forward to your visit and your support. Thank you for helping to keep this stunning place alive for generations to come. n

THE BIGGER PICTURE…

Travelling across the globe, Nicola Morley has produced a series of thought-provoking photographs that capture the imagination

P

hotographer Nicola Morley has worked all over the world taking award-winning images that have featured in prestigious exhibitions. Having worked in London, Switzerland and India, Nicola has returned to the Ribble Valley where she is setting up a studio and viewing room. Her time working in India led her to be named as a finalist in the massive Australian Head-On Photo Festival, with her image featuring in the main exhibition.

Educated at St Anne’s School in Windermere, Nicola went on to study at the Cordon Bleu cookery school in London. “I cooked for shooting parties in Scotland and went on to work as a chalet girl in Meribel, France and Canazie in Italy,” recalls Nicola, who also studied at secretarial college in Oxford. “I was working as a secretary, but I decided to do an HNC in TV production and went on to study a BA in Philosophy and Theology.” In her late twenties Nicola met her husband who was to go on to work in Switzerland – the couple lived there for 15 years during which time Nicola began to nurture her love of photography. She held an exhibition in Klosters and studied for an MA in Photography at the University of Westminster: “Studying at that level completely changed my view. I began to see photography as a means to tell a story – to help people understand the bigger picture. I want them to see what’s going on behind the image. It was quite a tough course to to do,” explains Nicola, who then returned to the UK splitting her time between London and Switzerland. “When I was in London living in Chelsea I went to a tea party and met a lady who was an artist. She was brought up in India and she wanted to have an exhibition to celebrate her artwork and her time there. She asked me if I would be interested in curating the exhibition, which was to be held in aid of the Saakshar School Fund charity. “I jumped at the chance. In return I was able to take pictures of the children.”

IT WAS SUCH AN ASPIRATIONAL SCHOOL AND FOR ME, IT WAS A LIFECHANGING EXPERIENCE

lifestyle Nicola recalls on the front door of the school, which was attended by youngsters from Delhi’s slums, there was a notice that read, ‘Until you spread your wings, you will have no idea how far you will fly’. “I wanted to enable them to dream so with the help of the teachers they drew their dream job and then dressed up as someone doing their dream career,” explains Nicola. Taking photographs of the pupils and of their drawings, Nicola’s thought-provoking images have been viewed across the globe. The first image of the series of a young girl, dreaming of becoming an artist, was the photograph that appeared at the HeadsOn Festival in Australia. “Our trip to India was really one of contrasts,” she recalls. “I was a white, middle class woman taking photographs of these young pupils who came from very deprived backgrounds. It was a tricky situation, so I was advised to conduct the project as a series of workshops, and I got the children and teachers on board. It was such an aspirational school and for

me, it was a life-changing experience. The children drew some beautiful pictures. “I had an assistant who helped me with the costumes, props and backdrops.” Following her trip, Nicola was asked to do a series of masterclasses and workshops in Derby and Birmingham, entitled East Meets West – based on her time in India. More recently Nicola has been shortlisted for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in London with her image, Grandma on Christmas Day – a photograph taken of her late mother Sylvia Hopwood. Nicola explains: “Due to the virus the exhibition was postponed but we have recently had news that we can now deliver our artwork to the Academy. I’m very excited to see what comes of that!” She has also recently been asked to take a picture of Catherine Penny the new High Sheriff of Lancashire and to take a portrait picture of Fiona Bruce, MP for Congleton, for the 209 Women Project where 209 female photographers took images of the 209 female MPs for an exhibition in the Houses of Parliament, to celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote. Meanwhile, Nicola is focusing on her commercial photography with Pickle Pictures, a company she has set up specifically for those wanting bespoke portraiture, for family and the office, animal photography and specialist food photography. She is also hoping to visit South Africa next year as part of her photography work and she is also currently working on a project, Winds of Change, which will form the basis of an exhibition at Towneley Hall in 2022. n

ith gyms closing, more people were signing up to online exercise classes, enjoying walks in the great outdoors and taking up cycling. And what better way to celebrate looking after ourselves, than by getting involved in National Fitness Day. This year it is on 23rd September and it aims to encourage providers across the country to offer the general public free opportunities to get active, try something new as well as highlight the benefits of working out. Being inactive can lead to lots of health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, some cancers and osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects women as they get older, that is why it’s particularly important for them to keep active and if possible, do more weight bearing exercises to strengthen bones from their 40s upwards. Cycling has seen a massive surge, with many bike shops struggling to cope with demand. As there has been less traffic on the roads, it’s been a great way for all the family to get out and about with cycling taking over walking as the preferred choice of exercise.

MORE THAN 75 PER CENT OF BRITS HAVE TAKEN UP SOME NEW FORM OF EXERCISE OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS

In a bid to keep the nation fit and healthy, many fitness celebs have been encouraging people to join in their free online classes. Jo Wickes (aka The Body Coach) had almost everyone, young and old doing his workouts daily in the comfort of their own homes, showing that you don’t need to access a gym to get fit and it’s something that can be done with the whole family. This year’s National Fitness Day theme is #Fitness2Me which aims to celebrate what fitness means to people and break down the barriers that stop people from being active. It is looking for people to promote their fitness stories and share on social media, tagging in @fitnessdayUK and #fitness2me and #fitnessday. According to Nuffield Health more than 75 per cent of Brits have taken up some new form of exercise over the last few months. These include HIIT sessions, walking, yoga, cycling, running, home weights and home treadmill. The good news is that the majority of these people want to continue with their exercise regime. But exercising regularly also goes hand in hand with eating healthily. Eating the right foods will boost our immune system and give us more energy, so what’s not to like. Try and reduce your alcohol intake, eat more fruit and vegetables and drink plenty of water. So get active, join in and try something new. n

WILL DISPUTES IN THE COVID ERA Expert Tom Howcroft of Forbes Solicitors explains how Wills can be challenged

A

lthough our doors may have been locked over the past few months, the tidal wave of Will disputes has not abated. If anything Will disputes are becoming more common. The courts have physically closed their doors for the majority of, if not all hearings, but the wheels of justice continue to turn with telephone hearings and hearings by Skype. Claims are still being issued, court directions and orders are still being complied with, and court hearings are still taking place. Although the world may have come to a standstill, the very tight time limits to bring claims remain. There are two main types of Will disputes, those are claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (the Inheritance Act) and challenges to the validity of Wills. Claims under the Inheritance Act are claims for ‘reasonable financial provision’ and are essentially money claims against an Estate. There is a time limit of six months from the date of the Grant of Probate to bring a claim and claims cannot be brought outside of this time without the permission of the court. Further, there is a limited class of people able to bring a claim, including: • Spouses/civil partners and former spouses and civil partners • Children of the deceased

• A person treated as a child of the deceased • Those being maintained by the deceased immediately prior to death. If you have been left out of a Will, or believe you should have received more, then get in touch and we will be happy to have a no obligation chat with you to discuss how we can help.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT OF A WILL, OR BELIEVE YOU SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED MORE, THEN GET IN TOUCH AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO HAVE A CHAT Challenges to the validity of Wills are also common and are on the rise. There are certain grounds which make a Will invalid and they include: • Lack of mental capacity • Lack of knowledge and approval of the terms of the Will • Will not properly executed • Undue influence • Fraudulent calumny (this is where a person’s mind is poisoned against another, and because of that a Will is changed) • Fraud and forgery.

The time limit to challenge the validity of a Will is significantly longer than the time limit to bring an Inheritance Act claim. However, it is very important that any Will dispute is brought quickly. There is a risk that an Estate could be distributed and the proceeds spent or moved out of reach, which will make a claim significantly more difficult. Therefore, it is important to speak to us quickly if you have an issue with a Will. We act for local, national and international clients and we are well equipped to ensure we can take clients’ instructions thoroughly and properly even in the event we are unable to meet face to face. We can take instructions by telephone, email, using Skype or Zoom and our offices are set up to ensure we can hold client meetings at a social distance. n

If you would like to discuss any Will dispute on a free, no obligation basis, feel free to contact Tom Howcroft on 0333 207 1130 or tom.howcroft@forbessolicitors.co.uk Tom is an Associate in our nationally recognised Contentious Trusts and Probate team

GREEN FINGERS Let’s Grow Preston is an environmental charity working in Preston, which is about helping local communities brighten up their areas and neighbourhoods with a wide range of planting

T

racy Hargreaves spoke with Annie Wynn, project development manager at Let’s Grow Preston, based within Ashton Walled Garden on Ashton Park. about how the scheme works and the benefits people reap from being involved. “We are a network of community gardens across Preston,” says Annie. “Supporting people within the PR postcode with seeds, plants, knowledge, tools, risk assessments and help to fill in application forms for funding, to name a few things. “If a member of the local community discovers there’s a grot spot and wants to improve it, we can help set up consultation with residents and talk through a plan of what they want to do with it. They need to get the buy in from the community in order for it to work.” The project was set up in 2011 by Preston City Council. It came up the initiative

and invited people to set up a network of community gardeners. Let’s Grow Preston has two sites of its own, one of which is Ashton Park, along with 25 community gardens across Preston, South RIbble, Chorley and up to Garstang. Ashton Park is its shop window. It has an edible garden, peace garden and formal gardens and it also grows food. Volunteers sow the seeds for them, and they then give the plants away to the community.

WE ARE A NETWORK OF COMMUNITY GARDENS ACROSS PRESTON Annie first got involved after her local vicar found out that she was doing an RHS course at Myerscough. She was one of the ones to go along to the initial meeting about the scheme, where she was noticed for her knowledge and was made secretary but quickly got promoted to chair. After her third child she left her job as an insurance broker and became a self-employed gardener, but she was spending more time volunteering. The charity received lottery funding and the position of project development manager was created and in 2018 she was offered the role. “If you have a community garden the land isn’t yours but is usually owned by the council or a housing association,” says Annie.

“So, you need to have public liability insurance which can cost between £250 and £500 and can be a stumbling block, we can help with full risk assessments and how to go about getting insurance. “We are always at the end of the phone and have a monthly network meeting where anyone can attend. Sometimes we have gardens which are struggling with vandalism or a certain type of plant and it’s a member of the network who resolves those issues.”

The scheme is also great for people’s wellbeing and has contacts with link workers and agencies where people are recommended to them. “They could be someone who is socially isolated to those with mental health issues. People come regularly because it’s a great place for getting outside, getting some company and a sense of achievement whatever your age.” If you are interested in getting involved in community environmental activities in Preston or would like to set up your group or project get in touch. n

Communication is Key

Use this time to have a sensible discussion with your partner about how you would both hope to proceed with the separation and consider the practical arrangements:

How Will Your Finances and Assets Be Divided?

The division of finances can be a tricky issue to tackle, particularly if you have shared finances and have been together for a considerable amount of time. Opening the dialogue early and being flexible in your negotiations can help you come to a solution which suits both of you. Additionally, if you own a home with your partner and both contribute to the mortgage, you should consider who will live where once you separate – will one of you will be able to take on the whole mortgage or will the property need to be sold?

Child Arrangements

IS IT TIME TO MAKE

A FRESH START? The current pandemic has been tough on us all, particularly so for couples who were locked down with each other while their marriages took the strain of these extraordinary circumstances, explains Antonia Love, Partner and Family Solicitor at Farleys

U

nfortunately for some, the pressure and stress has taken its toll leading to the irretrievable breakdown of a number of marriages. This certainly isn’t all doom and gloom though as it provides the opportunity for a fresh start while offering a much-needed light at the end of the tunnel. The current situation has undoubtedly caused some delay in the progression of divorces through the family court but there are some practical steps you can take now to ensure a smoother process going forward.

You should discuss with your partner how childcare will be arranged once you formally separate – whether your children will spend equal time with each parent or whether they will spend weekends with one and week days with the other. It is also important to consider whether your current situation with regards to employment and childcare is due to change, particularly if you are on furlough leave from work and whether a flexible plan will need to be in place to consider this. If your discussions can remain as constructive as possible right now, it will make things easier as you progress through your divorce proceedings. If you are finding it more difficult to come to any agreements, it may be necessary to take part in mediation with professionals who can help you to negotiate your agreements. Most importantly, it’s vital to know where you stand legally so if you are considering separation or divorce, you should speak with a family law solicitor at the earliest opportunity to discuss the next steps. Arranging a case management meeting is always a helpful first step. n

VENUES

A

round 73,600 weddings and civil partnership ceremonies were affected by lockdown this year. This means that 2021 and 2022 will be much busier than usual for the wedding industry, as even the traditionally quieter days and months of the wedding calendar are being filled with 2020 postponements as well as new plans. Couples wanting to get married as soon as possible are opting for small, intimate weddings in line with the current rules of both ceremonies and receptions in the form of a sit-down meal being limited to 30 guests in England, often with a promise to those unable to attend of a big party to celebrate in the future, when rules allow. Planning a wedding for just 30 might not have been your original choice but could provide a unique opportunity to spoil your guests with an unforgettable experience, such as the whole party staying on-site for an all-inclusive feel. Eaves Hall, for example, has bridal suites and 30 bedrooms for all your guests as well as extensive beautiful gardens and grounds for your party to enjoy exclusively.

Sarah Varley takes a look at planning a wedding and how some of the region’s beautiful, boutique venues are perfect for a limited number of guests Venues have risen to the challenge to offer something small but perfectly formed. For example, Northcote are offering gourmet weddings in their luxury Louis Roederer Champagne Rooms which are perfect for up to 30 guests and the Coniston Hotel has a special ‘Love Won’t Wait’ package for 2020 weddings for up to 26 people. Browsholme Hall has now added to its range of venue offerings with the newlyconverted historic Cart Shed for intimate weddings for 20 guests. Perhaps a midweek wedding may be the answer. Couples planning weddings for 2021 are finding not only that wedding venues are booked up, but also churches, registry offices and wedding photographers. Being able to be flexible on what day of the week you hold your celebrations means many more options become available. Prices also tend to be lower when booking

a venue for a midweek wedding so you may be able to save money or add extra luxuries to your day. For example, Bashall Barn has a special discounted ‘Soulmate Package’ for weddings taking place on Monday to Thursday. Planning a wedding will also feel different this year. Venues are holding private tours by appointment only, which will give you the chance to ask all the questions you need. You may find that appointments to view venues are currently easier to obtain as the wedding industry is only just coming out of lockdown. This also means you may be able to view venues all dressed for weddings with fewer events actually taking place. We have always been spoilt for choice with amazing venues in the Ribble Valley, so seize the moment and you can still enjoy planning your very special day! n

education

When choosing a school for your child, it is important to get as good a feel for the place as possible, writes Sarah Varley

T

he best way to get an accurate assessment of a school is to see as much as you can – observing the facilities, the staff and pupils in action. Coronavirus and current restrictions have made this uniquely problematic this year, but schools have risen to the challenge of showcasing their offerings to prospective pupils and parents in a number of ways.

Virtual tours

Schools have responded to limitations on visits over the past months by creating virtual online tours. Filmed tours of the school, drone footage of the campus, grounds and facilities and video presentations from the Head or senior staff can be found on school websites to give parents an initial insight into each school.

Some schools offer live video tours, which work particularly well and offer a great, 360-degree view of the school that can be tailored to each individual family. They can give parents and prospective pupils the opportunity to see a school in action and experience each school’s unique atmosphere. Virtual visits can offer an introduction to the school’s values and history, show a selection of subjects being taught, provide insight into classroom settings and teaching provision, and show families the indoor and outdoor spaces, such as the dining hall and sports facilities. Live question and answer sessions may be held in small groups, or individual video calls may be available to address particular concerns or expand on offerings for a child’s individual interests.

Open days

As restrictions ease and children return to school in September, many schools now have open days planned, the dates of which can be found on their websites. These specially adapted open days will offer safe, socially distanced tours of

schools as well as the chance to talk to the Head and senior staff and ask any questions you may have. They allow you to see the way a school operates, observe pupils and staff in action and experience the atmosphere in person. Booking systems are in operation for open days, with numbers carefully limited and spaced out across the day or several days. The structure of open days are of course subject to change as the schools continue to work in line with the latest guidance on social distancing.

Back to school safety

Parents should be able to access comprehensive information on each school’s plans for safely reopening in September. This includes planning for extra safety and social distancing measures to mitigate risks, such as details on how pupils might be divided into social ‘bubbles’ to reduce the number of people they are in contact with daily. All this information should be provided on the school’s website or by directing parents to a clear communication channel for reassurance. n

AMAZING ENDEAVOUR Westholme School explains how it has helped provide thousands of meals for the vulnerable and tackled community issues enabling families and children to reconnect

S

ince the start of the lockdown period, the catering team at Westholme School, have been proud to be involved with the Thomas Franks Feeding Communities initiative. The team worked tirelessly to bring to life a community kitchen project which has seen thousands of meals provided to those that are most in need in the Blackburn with Darwen and wider Lancashire area. Westholme Catering Manager, James Pate, says: “School caterers, Thomas Franks, launched the project with a donation and since then, separate donations totalling over £20,000 have been received from Newground Together, the Duchy of Lancaster Fund, the Blackburn Carers Service, Age UK respectively and the Ivy St Community Centre. We have been able to provide:

• 10,100 meals to the most vulnerable people in Blackburn with Darwen, including; The Blackburn with Darwen (BwD) Carers Service, Ivy St Community Centre, Newground Together, Age UK, Youth Action, Blackburn Youth Zone, Healthy Living, Community Business Partners, Benefit Mankind, The Barlow, Nightsafe, THOMAS foundation, Salvation Army, ARC and Blackburn Foodbank. These meals have been publicised through various media outlets and local publications in order to gain more donations. • 1000 meals on a day free of charge to the whole community as part of the Thomas Franks BIG FEED. • 1000 pieces of fruit and drinks to the North West Ambulance head office in Blackpool.

• Donations to the Blackburn Food Bank. • Weekly donations of frozen meals and other food items that have been donated to us from our various suppliers nationwide. A hundred cases of popcorn, two pallets of frozen airline meals, 1000 Robinsons drinks, 800 innocent smoothies, two pallets of vegan fillets and pieces and 2000 pot pasta ready meals were all donated to the partners listed above and moving forwards, we hope this is something we can continue to contribute towards as long as we can.”

MANY DIFFERENT ORGANISATIONS HAVE RALLIED TOGETHER TO HELP THOSE THAT NEED IT MOST James adds: “The most positive part of the whole endeavour has been the way in which so many different organisations have rallied together to help those that need it most. From the first moment, the council were extremely positive and helped us greatly from a logistical and financial point of view and we very much hope to continue the relationship going forward.” During August, the school has also taken part in a government initiative named the Holiday Action Fund (HAF).

As part of the initiative, Westholme and Thomas Franks have also teamed up with Blackburn and Darwen Council and Spring North, a charity based in Blackburn that aims to collectively tackle issues in the local community. The scheme has enabled school children to receive healthy and nutritious meals and organised activities through investment provided by the Government during the summer.

Along with Thomas Franks, Westholme helped to supply 15,000 meals to Newground Together, Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, IMO Charity and Blackburn Youth Zone in conjunction with Government funding. Spring North also managed to organise activities and food for almost 2000 children within the local area throughout August. The initiative has been providing crucial necessities for families in the area and has allowed children to reconnect with their friends in a safe environment whilst enjoying a range of activities and a hot meal. Commercial Director at Westholme School, Viv Davenport, explains: “This is a wonderful, kind initiative which we have been delighted to be part of. It is more important than ever right now to serve our communities – by working together we have achieved very special things. Blackburn with Darwen Council has been tremendous in connecting us to those most in need and it has been a real privilege to help make a real difference.” n

WEEKLY BOARDING – A LIFE OF LEARNING, FUN & FRIENDSHIP

S

tonyhurst provides a happy home environment designed for the fulfilment of pupils, and weekly boarding means that parents are able to focus on the demands of working life during the week and make the most of family time together at the weekends. Removing the school run and transport to after-school activities frees up a great deal of time for both parties, allowing parents to maintain their careers while ensuring their children get the best possible start in life. “The main benefit is taking out two hours of travel time each day and replacing it with a whole host of activities. They get their homework or revision done in structured study time as part of their evening routine, with teachers available to help, and then they spend time with friends being active. It is a very healthy way of life, full of sport and fun, and I think in this way it really extends their childhood.”

Rebecca, current parent

As increasing numbers of parents face the dilemma of balancing hectic work lives with ensuring their children are fulfilled, many families are seeing the benefits that weekly boarding at Stonyhurst has for both the child and the parent Weekly boarding also has many benefits for deeper personal growth in children. Learning never stops at Stonyhurst and children are immersed in an educational environment, learning many important life skills. Children take part in a structured programme after the academic day including

dedicated, supervised study time with academic staff on hand and social, active and fun down-time for round-the-clock education and development. “There are so many distractions and activities we don’t really have time to miss home.” Sebastien, current pupil

can pursue many interests as well as additional enrichment opportunities including talks and presentations. Boarding comes with a built-in social life, living with friends and forming lifelong friendships. At Stonyhurst, children make global links to overseas pupils in the friendships they make and learn to get along with all different personalities and cultures. Peer support is important for their personal development socially, spiritually and academically.

“For all the children, immersing themselves in school life has allowed so many opportunities. It is an extraordinary school for any pupil, joining in and finding your interests is part of the culture. Boarding has helped with independence and confidence. The school has also prepared them so well that I can take them into any environment and be proud of their behaviour. Sharing all that time together forms strong friendships – the children form lifelong bonds that will be with them forever.” Rebecca, current parent

“I find the friendships with people from all over the world the most enjoyable part about boarding. You have so many friendship groups, from classes, sports teams and your boarding house.” Sam, current pupil

Stonyhurst endeavours to recreate a family home environment, with adult role models in loco parentis who are teachers and specialists in the personal development of young people. There are also plenty of home comforts like toast and hot chocolate in the evening, taking bubble baths and watching movies.

IT IS A VERY HEALTHY WAY OF LIFE, FULL OF SPORT AND FUN, AND I THINK IN THIS WAY IT REALLY EXTENDS THEIR CHILDHOOD “The movie nights helped me settle in, and snack times in the evenings were a really nice way to get to know each other, chatting over muffins and cocoa. My best memories are the simple things – dancing with friends in the boarding house, movie nights and staying over for the whole weekend to go on trips.” Isabelle, former pupil

Weekly boarding encourages independence, offering opportunities to become more self-reliant. Routine, consistency and discipline are all built in with compassion and tolerance at Stonyhurst as pupils navigate adolescence. The experience of boarding makes the transition from school to life at university easier and equips young people with the independence they need to succeed in the future. “I wasn’t fazed at all to go off to university and have found it easier than others to be away from home and share living spaces. This meant I was able to concentrate straight away on my studies and joining societies. I’m still in touch with my friends from

Stonyhurst – it is easier to catch up with those who live locally but I’ve kept in touch with my friends from France and Sweden too.” Isabelle, former pupil

There are still plenty of opportunities for parents to be involved in life at Stonyhurst. Through the use of many levels of communication, whether it is face to face, attending events or through social media, parents are very much part of their child’s journey at school.

“The staff are amazing and the Headteacher is incredible. If you embrace Stonyhurst life even for a short time, you will be caught up in the magnetism of the place. I see Stonyhurst as an extension of our family, a part of us. I am always made so welcome and have countless memories of sharing in my children’s successes, from watching plays or sport to listening to my son’s speeches as Head Boy.” Rebecca, current parent Stonyhurst Scholarship applications now open, visit the website to learn more: stonyhurst.ac.uk/scholarships

CELEBRATING SUCCESS Many Oakhill students excelled individually in their GCSEs, not least school Head Boy Sam Chatburn who received the highest grade of 9 in every one of his 10 GCSEs which is a huge achievement given that in addition to his academic work he has been involved in all areas of school life and at the time of lockdown was preparing to take a lead role in our whole school production.

WORK ON TOP STUDENT well as being a talented artist, a keen ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG Asrunner and former holder of Oakhill’s cross Fifteen UCLan archaeology undergraduate volunteers have teamed up with Oxford Archaeology to investigate nationally important prehistoric sites along the route of Highways England’s new £150 million A585 bypass. The students have started their four-week excavation and it will be an invaluable opportunity for undergraduate students to learn first-hand about the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages – between almost 14,000 and 5,000 years ago.

country record, student Juliet Griffiths achieved excellent grades in all subjects and was particularly pleased that some of her grade 9s were in English Language and English Literature as this is an area she is going on to study at A level.

ROSSALL SCHOOL TACKLING INACTIVITY UCLAN STUDENTS ACHIEVES STRONGEST AND OBESITY DURING TICK ALL THE RESULTS LOCKDOWN FASHION BOXES Rossall School students have much to celebrate following the release of both their A Level results and Rossall Diploma results. The percentage of A* grades has tripled whilst the percentage of A grades has almost doubled. A third of all grades awarded were A*/A. This is an incredible achievement, especially given the reliance upon historical data. The cohort of students has secured university places at some of the most prestigious institutions in the UK and overseas.

In response to COVID-19, Active Lancashire and the SPAR Lancashire School Games launched a virtual programme of activities to ensure that children across the county had access to a structured sport timetable throughout lockdown. Designed around the P.E. curriculum for three main age groups (Year 1-2, Year 3-6 and teenagers), the 10 week ‘Stay at Home Heroes’ timetable included daily online resources and celebrity video features including former British middleweight champion, Brian ‘The Lion’ Rose, professional paraplegic adventurer, Shaun Gash, and the team of Lancashire School Games Organisers.

Two talented students from the University of Central Lancashire are celebrating having won a national design competition organised by the Graduate Fashion Foundation on behalf popular video messaging app TikTok. Chelsea Barker, 22, and Bethany Redhead, 23 celebrated double success as they have both also been awarded first-class honours degrees. The brief was to produce the company’s first-ever range of merchandise that was fashionable, ethical and distinctly TikTok.

LOCKDOWN WILLS – VALID OR NOT? Challenges to the validity of Wills are not as common as people may think. Specialist probate disputes lawyer, Nicola Turner, considers how COVID-19 may impact on the number of challenges

I

n ‘normal times’ challenges on Wills are most commonly based on the argument that either the Testator (the person making the Will) was acting under undue influence (or duress) of another person – or they didn’t have mental capacity. A Will can also be challenged on the basis that it was not signed and witnessed properly. Such challenges are rare, particularly with Wills drawn up by solicitors, although there can be scope for challenge with ‘home made’ or DIY Wills. The pandemic has led to increased awareness of the need for a Will, however, the lockdown made it more difficult to ensure Wills are properly witnessed. There are reports of people using video calls or social media to have Wills witnessed remotely. Until now, such Wills would not be valid as the Wills Act 1837 requires Wills to be signed in the presence of two or more witnesses in the physical presence of the Testator. However, the Ministry of Justice recently announced a change to the law to come

into force in September which will apply retrospectively to any Wills executed between 31 January 2020 and 31 January 2022. In effect Wills witnessed by video link will be valid, provided additional guidance has been adhered to. This requires the quality of the link to be good enough for witnesses to see and hear everything, the process must be recorded, and the Will physically signed by the witnesses as soon as possible after video witnessing. It seems inevitable there will be a rise in validity challenges in future and we expect to see more cases where Wills have been drafted at home. Whilst this change in the law will be welcomed by many, it will still be important to ensure the execution complies with the new requirements. Any failures in that process could render the Will subject to a validity challenge. Not only can arguments be raised about witnessing of homemade Wills, they are much easier to challenge on more common grounds as the procedures that solicitors employ to try to make a Will ‘bullet proof’ will be absent from the process.

If a Will is invalid, it has no effect whatsoever and the estate is either distributed under the terms of their previous Will, or under the rules of intestacy if there is no prior Will. This can have devastating financial consequences for families – but is something that can be easily avoided by seeking professional legal assistance. n Nicola Turner is a senior associate solicitor specialising in inheritance and probate disputes at regional law firm Napthens napthens.co.uk

T

racy grew up in the middle east near Saudi Arabia. Her parents worked out there at the time, however as a family they moved around a lot and lived quite a nomadic life before returning to Ireland as a teenager. From working in Dublin, she has picked up the soft Irish accent, but she married a Yorkshire man and moved to the north of the country. Tracy studied Psychology at the University of Sussex and began her career in the health sector as a clinic director in Dublin, London, and Yorkshire before moving to Sheffield Children’s FT Hospital where she helped to set up a new Emergency Neonatal/Paediatric transport service. She enjoyed working on patient pathways and quality improvement programmes and set up the Quality Improvement team at the Children’s Hospital. From there she travelled to Dartmouth in America to train in Clinical Microsystems with a team from Sheffield Teaching Hospital which involved seeing how quality improvement programmes could help reconfigure healthcare settings and different ways of working in Hospitals. Tracy joined BMI Healthcare and rolled out Lean Hospital programmes in a number of hospitals in the UK before being offered the position as hospital director with BMI Healthcare in Rochdale.

FEEDBACK HAS BEEN VERY POSITIVE FROM THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL

Being a hospital director in the middle of a pandemic is not what you expect to be doing, but for Tracy Jackson it has been a challenging time

“I loved the autonomy there of being able to use my experience and knowledge and introduce changes to the hospital,” says Tracy. After three years of working as executive director, she moved to Spire Fylde Coast to take up the position of hospital director in Blackpool 12 months ago. “I had never been to Blackpool before and have been really pleasantly surprised at how many lovely villages surround Blackpool, I cycle a lot so really enjoyed being by the coast.” But after only a few months in the role, the pandemic hit, and it was all change. “We were all learning as we went along,” said Tracy. The collaboration was great between Independent Sector hospitals and the NHS trusts.” The hospital has been carrying out urgent cancer surgeries for the local NHS Trust since Covid began and will continue to provide support in any way they can.

business

“There was a lot of staff frustration at the beginning as surgical activity slowed down to allow us all to agree how we could safely operate,” says Tracy. “We decided to get staff together and talk about what we could do differently as we felt this was an opportunity to be innovative and make sure we were maximising the use of all areas of the hospital during this time whilst supporting staff who were also having to juggle childcare, work and home. The hospital could not see patients in Outpatient clinics for a number of weeks, so our outpatient nurses retrained to work on the ward, administrators retrained to become healthcare assistants and housekeepers. “Everyone retrained in a different area as we thought it would be useful for staff to gain experience and learn another role. Not only did this keep morale up, but it meant we could continue to offer hours to bank and contracted staff, people learnt new skills and also from a business continuity point of view we were in a good position to cross cover if any of our staff became ill. In fact, Tracy’s two sons have temporarily joined the hospital after they came home from university. “People in the community were really great, we had no problem getting hold of PPE, Spire had secured a good stock of all necessary equipment. Local companies did offer to help if we needed any stock, we even had local builders knocking on our door to help with equipment. It really

was a great feeling that we had so many offers of help. We also recruited a number of staff who had lost their jobs in different companies in the community over the past six months. One of the main priorities was to look after the staff as it was a challenging time for a number of people. “We had some staff who lived with family members that were shielding and they were incredibly nervous about coming to the hospital and

THE COLLABORATION WAS GREAT BETWEEN INDEPENDENT SECTOR HOSPITALS AND THE NHS TRUSTS we wanted to create a safe environment for them. We organised secluded offices for staff to work in, we gave out grab and go food bags, so they did not have to go to the canteen. As a company Spire has really looked after all of the staff and the communication from the CEO Justin Ash and COO John Forrest has been amazing. As Hospital Directors we have had very clear instructions, have felt fully supported and there was a clear strategy from the company at a time in which there was so much uncertainty. Safety has been the number one priority. “I’m proud to say we have treated more than 1000 patients that would have otherwise had their urgent treatment

89

delayed since the lockdown first came in on 23rd March. The next stage is to focus on reopening services in the hospital and prioritise the waiting lists. We are a safe site for patients to come into. Staff and Consultants are on a regular Covid testing cycle, all patients have to self isolate before coming to the hospital for surgery and we have single patient rooms so everyone is kept at a safe distance apart in a sterile environment. “Our consultants have reviewed all of our patients that are waiting for treatment to decide whether they need urgent treatment or not and then patients are offered the choice of coming in. I’m pleased to say that more patients are now feeling confident to have their surgery and feedback has been very positive from those that have been in the hospital and seen all the controls we have in place to keep them safe. We also have a one stop breast clinic for anyone who is concerned about breast cancer, they can just ring up and get an appointment without being put on a waiting list.” Tracy’s vision for being innovative and developing staff has shown positive results for the hospital but she admits she couldn’t have done it without the support of the staff. She says: “There are staff here who have worked for more than 20 years who are completely dedicated and want to get involved in improvements for the future. We are all one big family.” n

ellor Brook based firm Monks Contractors are celebrating winning their biggest ever fleet hire contract with Lancashire County Council. For the next five years, Monks Contractors will be supplying 30 tractor units and

trailers to Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Renewables Ltd for a project to receive, treat and transport contract waste for Lancashire.

OUR BUSINESS CONSISTS OF THREE MAIN AREAS – WASTE HAULAGE, PLANT HIRE AND THE JETTING DIVISION Owned by Chris and Louise Monk, Monks Contractors is very much a familyrun business. Chris started the company in 1993 when he left school to begin farming with a few sheep, which he bought with his pocket money. At the age of 17, he met

Louise whilst working on a farm in Mellor and Louise ended up giving Chris a lift on her quad bike. The business started developing from there, and resulted in Chris buying his first tractor allowing him to begin contracting work and, between Chris and Louise, Monks Contractors was born. The early stages of Monks Contractors was primarily farming-based and operated from Louise’s family farm in Mellor. Business started to expand into landfill sites which included work on tanks and general tasks, such as cleaning weighbridges and making repairs. Things changed however, when one day Chris ended up repairing a lorry that had broken down and the rest is history. Monks Contractors continued to

has grown, they have acquired a number of customers including working with large blue-chip companies such as Veolia, Biffa, Suez, Viridor and Lancashire County Council. One of Monks’ unique selling points is being able to offer everything with regards to waste. They can do anything their customers need from processing and shredding, to loading and transporting, and they will always try to find a way to accommodate any customer request. expand and bought a plot of land in Mellor Brook to accommodate the growing business, which the team moved into in 2004. Today, Monks Contractors are very much a family run business with daughters Hannah and Lauren having key parts within the company and son Jack also involved. Even the miniature Dachshunds are a big part of the daily office life!

The business now consists of three main areas – waste haulage, plant hire and the jetting division, encompassing 70 employees and over 80 vehicles. The waste haulage department includes both walking floor and ejector trailers as well as roll-on/roll-off skip wagons. The jetting division comprises jetvacs, gully wagons, custom vans fitted with CCTV survey and root cutting equipment, and the plant hire division consists of over 60 plant machines such as loading shovels, shredders and excavators. As the company

Last month, Monks lined up the fleet of 30 new Volvo tractor units and 30 BMI ejector and walking-floor trailers that will be fulfilling the new contract, for a photo shoot at Clitheroe Auction Mart. Due to the size of the contract and number of units and trailers, Monks struggled to find a piece of land big enough to show off the new fleet together, however Clitheroe Auction Market offered space at their site, for which Monks are extremely grateful.

THE COMPANY MOTTO IS ‘WORKING TOWARDS A GREENER ENVIRONMENT’, WHICH IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THE BUSINESS They also boast an extensive six-bay workshop which has been equipped with the most high-spec technical equipment, where their team of trained and experienced mechanics, auto-electricians, tyre men and welders carry out the maintenance for the majority of their vehicles in-house. The company motto is ‘working towards a greener environment’, which is extremely important to the business. Their HGVs have the most environmentally friendly engines and whenever they purchase new vehicles and equipment, they always go for the greenest options available.

The contract with LCC and Lancashire Renewables is a real milestone for Monks Contractors and the team are very proud of what they have achieved as a result of everyone’s hard work and dedication. They are constantly looking at how they can improve and learn going forward, to allow them to continue growing and delivering an outstanding service. n

COUNTDOWN FOR VIRTUAL ILLUMINATIONS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR LANCASHIRE BUSINESSES Small and medium-sized enterprises across Lancashire are defying the economic downturn with financial support from Access to Finance Lancashire (A2F Lancashire), funded by Lancashire County Council and the European Regional Development Fund. One SME to have benefited from the support is Chorley’s Fresh Perspective Resourcing. Founded by sisters FP Resourcing decided to make use of the diverse support available to help shift their focus onto sectors that were still thriving during lockdown, as well as offering virtual training for businesses and candidates.

It was Blackpool’s biggest party of the year and everyone was invited! The traditional Illuminations switch-on concert usually takes place in a packed seafront arena with an audience of 20,000 people. However, Covid restrictions on large-scale events meant no live event for the first time in more than 70 years. The hour-long streamed concert was freely accessible and included exclusive “at home” performances by the likes of Melanie C and Fleur East as well as a performance by Diversity.

PARTNERSHIP TO TACKLE HOUSING SHORTAGE Leading national housebuilder Lovell Partnerships and Together Housing Group have joined forces to create Lovell Together LLP, an innovative joint venture to tackle the housing crisis across the North of England. It will create much needed quality developments, form new communities and meet housing delivery targets across the region. The venture will enable both partners to share expertise and resources to identify and secure large-scale opportunities to develop high quality mixed tenure new homes.

ROSEBUD INVESTS £2M INTO LANCASHIRE BUSINESSES Lancashire County Council’s Rosebud Fund, which invests between £10,000 and £300,000 in businesses across the region, has reached a lending milestone of £2m. Since GC Business Finance was appointed to deliver the fund in July 2019, Rosebud has made 16 investments which have enabled businesses across Lancashire to expand and has directly resulted in the creation of over 100 new jobs.

f Ralph or Giorgio or Tommy or Hugo, or any of the iconic clothes designers of our time, were to put their shirt on a car, then this might just be the one. Sorry, perhaps that should be the ‘1’. Anyone with an eye for design would be delighted to be responsible for the new BMW 1 Series and, in particular, the racy, road-hugging BMW M135i xDrive. Red hot and brimming with attitude, this is a compact giant of a hatchback capable of more power than any other four-cylinder vehicle in the history of BMW. This is seat-of-your-pants motoring with great looks, personality and features. A 2.0-litre petrol engine delivers a thumping 306bhp, enough to fire the BMW M135i from 0-62mph in just 4.8 secs and a top speed of 155mph. Quick with a capital Q. It also comes with performance optimising elements such as a high-performance cooling package, M Sport braking system and M135i optimised M Steering. Put your foot to the floor – if you dare – and the ‘intelligent control logic’ system will send anything up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear axle. Milliseconds later, the xDrive system kicks in and becomes four-wheel drive.

THIS IS SEAT-OF-YOUR-PANTS MOTORING WITH GREAT LOOKS, PERSONALITY AND FEATURES For a car capable of monster performance, the fuel consumption and emissions are impressive... 39.8-41.5 mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of just 162-155 grams of CO2 per kilometre. An eight-speed sport automatic transmission with electronic selector lever adds further to the feeling of oomph (that’s slang for power incidentally)! Standard specification for the BMW M135i xDrive includes the M Sport steering wheel and new M Seats with Alcantara upholstery. This upholstery variant is enhanced with special BMW M piping and contrast blue stitching.

THE ONE… Brimming with attitude, the racy BMW M135i xDrive is a great looking car with lots of personality and it’s quick… very quick, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Roger Moore It is the only model variant to feature the BMW kidney grille in a distinctive mesh design and its surround and three-dimensional elements come in cerium grey. With double-spoke 19” alloys and LED headlights it looks better than smart; inviting to driver and passenger alike. All the latest technology tricks and treats are inside too with Live Cockpit Professional, comprising 10.25” Control

Display with Touch Function and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Available for the first time on the BMW 1 Series, the Connected Drive Package Professional offers Apple CarPlay, Concierge Services, Connected Parking and Real-Time Traffic Information. Did I mention Microsoft Office 365? That’s there too to synchronise emails, contacts and calendar entries, plus Skype for business calls with just a single click. In short, it means you are more connected than ever with full support across any number of situations, just open your mouth and ask! FITNESS AND FAITH

S

he became part of the keep fit association and began teaching keep fit during evening classes from the age of 21. She spent the next few years in the health and education sector moving to Blackburn and continuing to take evening classes. She married in 1974 and travelled for a year before settling in Lancashire. Her career involved working and training at various adult centres and colleges across the region including Blackburn and Chorley, responsible for the progression and improvement of non-vocational courses. Forty years on and now retired, she is still continuing with her passion for keep fit and considers herself to be fortunate to still

Seventy-one-year-old Val Edge got into keep fit when she was just 19 and lived in Sale, Cheshire. She used to help the music and movement group at her local centre and put on records for the routines, when one week the teacher was unable to take the class and asked if Val could step in. The rest, as they say is history teach classes. Tragically Val’s husband Graham was killed in a road accident in 1995 at the age of 46, but her amazing family, friends and neighbours helped her keep going. Val was 44 years old and carried on with her work developing courses. In 2005 the government withdrew all funding for adult learning and all non-

vocational classes stopped, meaning Val’s role was made redundant She was now 58. By this time, she had around 80 students as she was taking four or five classes a week, so she decided to set up her own company under the umbrella of an adult community college and include other courses such as yoga, soft furnishings, flower arrangements and fitness.

Then 10 years ago Val was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had to have major surgery at the Christie along with six months of chemotherapy. While she lost hair, had blisters on her feet and was very weak and tired, she still turned up to her classes every week just to sit and watch and despite having surgery in December, chemotherapy in May she was back teaching in the September of the same year. Life took another bad turn three years ago when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer and had part of her bowel taken away. After her surgery she had a second course of chemotherapy for six months at the Christie. But once again she still carried on and taught her classes from a chair. Now fit and healthy, Val now aims to give back to her community, helping others to get through their own struggles by creating a strong community of enthusiastic people, who want to keep moving and keep spirits lifted.

I PLAN THE LESSONS AROUND THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE IN THE CLASS AND THEY ARE BASED ON CHAIR WORK AND MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITY But then Covid-19 struck. Pre lockdown the fitness instructor had been teaching classes for over 40 years without ever missing a class and Covid-19 was to be no different. She decided to turn to an online learning platform Learning with Experts to help her deliver them. Learning with Experts is the only online course to offer direct feedback from top experts and so was the natural choice for Val to continue her characteristic teaching style. Echoing Val’s much-loved communitybuilding classes, Learning with Experts’ virtual classroom has allowed Val to keep motivating her ladies whilst also welcoming new members to her community from around the globe. The 10-part course was all filmed on two iPhones directly in Val’s living room during isolation. Technology was something else she had to get used to, as she had to video herself at home. She filmed 10 weeks of classes in just two days in her lounge. “It was tough on my own,” Val says. “While I have two children, my son lives in America and my daughter in Chester, so we didn’t see each other while lock down was in place.” All of Val’s students enrolled, many of whom have been with her throughout her

She puts her amazing strength down to the fact that she is so fit and that has helped with her illnesses, but also her faith. WINNING WAYS WITH LOCKDOWN VEG

W

hen the going gets tough, the British get growing. Our enthusiasm for homegrown fruit and vegetables was last cultivated in the Second World War by Minister of Food and pioneer of rationing Lord Woolton, and by propaganda shots of the young princess Elizabeth tending vegetable plots at Windsor Castle. Since this spring’s lockdown, backyards and gardens have burst into life, and demand for allotments has soared. The Royal Horticultural Society reports a five-fold increase in requests for advice and seedsmen have had a bumper year. Now we are harvesting the fruits, and vegetables, of our labours. But what are we going to do with it all? Freezing is one option, but trying cooking up something creative, says Mike Bryan, proprietor of The Bees Country Kitchen at Chorley covered market. Among the suggestions from Mike, a finalist in the BBC Food and Farming Awards, are vegetable kebabs for the barbecue, or

Has this spring’s gardening frenzy left you overwhelmed with produce? Stephanie Sparrow gathers recipe and pickling inspiration substituting thinly sliced lengths of courgettes for sheets of lasagne. “Spare veg can be roasted in a little spray oil, seasoned and added cold to a salad with harissa paste and couscous, or to passata and sautéed onions for a pasta sauce,” says Mike.

SPARE VEG CAN BE ROASTED IN A LITTLE SPRAY OIL, SEASONED AND ADDED COLD TO A SALAD WITH HARISSA PASTE AND COUSCOUS Be brave with green beans too. “Boil briefly then add to a hot frying pan with a little oil, mustard seeds and black onion seeds for a nice accompaniment to a curry,” he says.

Not every vegetable has to be a showstopper. “Add small diced veg to bulk out spaghetti Bolognese or chilli,” says Mike. Homemade pickles and chutneys will also make the most of your crop and build a winter store cupboard. During WW2 Lord Woolton encouraged pickling expert Henry Sarson (the vinegar magnate) to produce a thrifty recipe book. The simply named Home Pickling was reprinted throughout WW2, and my late grandmother snapped up her copy in 1942 for one shilling and sixpence.

SOME OF OUR RECIPES HAVE BEEN IN MY FAMILY FOR GENERATIONS Faced with my own glut of homegrown vegetables I turned to Home Pickling for advice. I learnt that simple equipment is sufficient, cook in stainless steel saucepans and store in sterilised, air-dried jam jars. I also read that any garden produce, from cherries to marrows can be boiled with spices or vinegar to make a pickle, chutney or ketchup (the word ketchup has nothing to do with tomatoes, it is Chinese for sauce says Henry).

My wartime beetroot chutney was a success. Flavoured with allspice, salt, pepper, onions, sugar, and raisins it has used up my glut of beetroot. One tip however, boiled malt vinegar is very pungent. Henry Sarson recommended opening every window when cooking, but next time I’ll ditch the malt for a gentler product such as cider vinegar. Back in the garden, newly confident growers could progress to items which are difficult to find or expensive in the supermarket, says Catherine Butters, head gardener and grower at Moor Hall Restaurant with Rooms in Aughton.

Catherine who uses the one-acre Walled Garden and its glass houses to supply the two Michelin star restaurant and casual Barn with specialised produce and garnishes, suggests planting globe courgettes, or fennel as a next step. “Or try raspberries which can be expensive in a punnet but are reasonably priced when bought as canes and planted in the spring”, she says.

Managing director Becky Heaton Cooper, who runs the cafe alongside the Heaton Cooper Studio (gallery), is the great granddaughter of Bolton’s famous landscape artist Alfred Heaton Cooper and his Norwegian wife Mathilde Valentinsen.

NORTHERN HIGHLIGHTS

Pickles and chutneys are not just a British store cupboard favourite. Scandinavian countries preserve berries and vegetables ahead of their long winters, a tradition celebrated at Mathilde’s Cafe in Grasmere.

The menu draws on this Lancashire, Cumbrian and Norwegian heritage: dishes include slow-cooked beef, Scandinavian fishcakes, and meatballs served with berries. “Some of our recipes have been in my family for generations”, says Becky. “For example, our simple pickling recipe warms apple cider vinegar with lots of sugar, then adds vegetables. We make our sauerkraut by salting the cabbage with aromats and leaving it at 18 degrees for 10 days, before storing it in airtight bags to continue the fermentation process for eight to 10 weeks. Becky suggests that vegetables with a lower starch content are most suitable for pickling. “Cauliflower, beetroot and carrots all pickle well,” she says. All chefs have favourite pickling vinegars and flavourings. “I suggest malt, apple, white wine, or a basic white vinegar. Spices such as allspice, bay, cloves, juniper, mustard seeds and dill seeds work well,” says Becky. n

MAKING A MOVE

D

uring the Covid 19 pandemic the housing market, like most industries in the UK, came to a grinding halt with very few viewings permitted, and like many sectors these were transferred to being done online. Solicitors and removal services all ceased and it was a negative forecast predicted by many in the media. However, it appears these forecasts were wrong and fast forward to current trends and house prices in the UK have grown, with the property sector showing an unexpected ‘mini-boom’ as lockdown restrictions are eased. This has been further helped by the government’s relaxation of stamp duty on the first £500,000 which has been a window of opportunity for many buyers. Fantastic news for those looking to eek the most out of their budget, many of whom will now be able to move into a larger property, one which perhaps better meets their needs without the added financial pressure of having to pay thousands of pounds in stamp duty. Coupled with this, many of us have spent more time working from home

Amidst the recent global pandemic predictions for the property sector were a concern – however nothing could be further from reality as local estate agents enjoy a surprisingly buoyant and competitive market, writes Gail Bailey and there is an understanding that this may continue in the future, making many people consider their surroundings and what they need from their property. For some this has involved wanting to move

THERE IS WITHOUT DOUBT SOME MOMENTUM AND CONFIDENCE AT PRESENT. THE STAMP DUTY HOLIDAY HAS ALSO HAD A POSITIVE IMPACT further into the countryside and property developers, who also had to down tools, are now back in business and seeing a growing demand for homes, especially in more rural locations. Lockdown made those who were already considering a house move eager

with anticipation for estate agent doors to reopen, and there has been a steady increase in enquiries since rules were relaxed. The market is competitive with hopes it will continue to get busier. Edward Snowden, Director of Mortimers and Fine and Country told us: “Following an uncertain period for everyone, it is pleasing to see that the levels of activity in terms of valuations, viewings and sales are exceeding levels beyond where they were prior to lockdown. It appears people have been spending their time at home gathering thoughts about moving be it upsizing, downsizing or relocating, and there is without doubt some momentum and confidence at present. The stamp duty holiday that runs until 31st March 2021 has also had a positive impact on the market.” n

BUILD, BUILD, BUILD

Zara Moon Architects explain the new rules when it comes to building new homes and how land is set to be earmarked into three categories

T

o revive our economy and support growth, Boris Johnson’s strategy is to, ‘Build, build, build’. New laws were laid in Parliament in July aiming to deliver much-needed new homes, revitalise town centres, allow businesses to adapt quickly and cut the red-tape. The new rules, which will come into effect by September, will mean full planning applications will not be required to demolish and rebuild unused buildings as homes and commercial and retail properties can be quickly repurposed to help revive our high streets and town centres. This will help our high streets and town centres to provide more space for new

businesses and help them to adapt quickly to what consumers and businesses need. Pubs, libraries, village shops and other buildings essential to communities will not be covered by these flexibilities, recognising these form part of the fabric of areas along with theatres, concert halls and live music performance venues, which are to be saved for future generations. Homeowners will also be able to add up to two additional storeys to their home to create new homes or more living space for growing families through a fast track approval process, with a requirement to carefully consider the impact on neighbours and the appearance of the extension.

COUNCILS WILL ALSO BE TOLD TO PUSH THROUGH PLANS The government is also in the process of setting out plans to reform England’s seven-decade old planning system to deliver more high-quality, well-designed homes and beautiful and greener communities for people to live in. The intention is to cut out bureaucracy to get Britain building, while protecting high standards. The biggest change will see land being divided into three categories: Growth, Renewal and Protected. On land earmarked for growth, new homes, schools and hospitals will be allowed to be built automatically, with councils unable to veto. Councils will also be told to push through plans on land marked for renewal.

Protected land will include green belts and areas of natural beauty, where new building plans will not be allowed. Other key changes in the proposal include: • All new homes should be carbon neutral by 2050 • All new streets should be tree-lined • A ‘first homes scheme’, which would give a 30 per cent discount on new builds to first-time buyers, locals and key workers • A national charge for developers, to replace the existing Section 106 agreements and the Community Infrastructure Levy. This would fund schools, roads, surgeries and similar projects, as well as a proportion of affordable homes The Government is yet to release further details on how their strategy will be implemented in practice. At ZMA we are reviewing the Government guidance regularly and each month we will provide you with further information on how this may affect your home, land or business. n Contact us if you have a project you would like to discuss with the team
