Magazines Editor As Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans rightly says this month, we all have to adapt to a ‘new normal’ for our own safety and that of others. It’s great to see that towns and villages across the Valley are coming back to life. Visiting Clitheroe and Whalley recently, it was a delight to see that the streets are once again buzzing with shoppers. Events too are gradually coming back and, while limited in numbers, weddings are still going ahead. In this month’s Live Ribble Valley we have a definitive wedding guide, featuring some lovely boutique venues that are just perfect for more intimate weddings. With some couples preferring to postpone their big day, 2021 dates are filling up fast with many opting for midweek dates. So, if you are thinking of tying the knot, bear this in mind! Also in this month’s magazine, we chat to artist Celia Davies who is quite literally riding on the crest of a wave. Celia’s work involves her two passions in life – art and travel. She has been lucky enough to sail the world while teaching art on board luxury cruise liners. Many of the places she visits provide inspiration for her unique pieces of art, many of which feature in prestigious interiors all over the world. With the start of the football season, David Fearnhead takes us through ‘the numbers game’ detailing how football clubs have fared over the past few months and in our Food & Drink section Duncan Thomas introduces the start of the shooting season. With grouse back on the menu in some country inns and restaurants, Duncan encourages us to try this healthy, low fat meat. We also have a lovely recipe for you to try courtesy of Philippa Davis, international private chef and food writer – grouse and fig salad with toasted almonds, ricotta, honey and herbs – delicious! We hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Live Ribble Valley. Jan Woolley Editor

GLOBETROTTING ARTIST

Inspired by the countries she has visited while travelling the world working on luxury cruise liners, Celia Davies produces unique pieces of art using ink and Japanese Yupo paper

E

xperimental artist Celia Davies has managed to combine her two great passions in life. “Art and travel have both been lifelong passions for me,” says Celia, who works from a studio at her Lancashire home and travels the world as an art instructor on luxury cruise liners. “With this lovely job, I have travelled with my husband Chris to many corners of the globe, including the Arctic, Australasia, South America and Asia.

MY TRAVELS CONTINUE TO INSPIRE ME “It has been a dream position for me, and our most recent voyage to China, South Korea and Japan, just before lockdown, was particularly special.” While on board cruise liners, with Cunard, Crystal and in particular, Seabourn, Celia encourages participants in her classes to experiment with a variety of art materials, and to express their own uniqueness: “The themes of the sessions, which are held on

sea days, are often based around some aspect of the countries we visit, which offer an endless source of creative inspiration and excitement. “On the last day sailing of each voyage, we hold a special art exhibition. This is

the occasion when fellow cruisers, family and friends can come and admire the paintings we have produced. Often the guests have amazed themselves with their own undiscovered talent! “We have made great friends over the

Celia works on Japanese Yupo paper, a tree-free synthetic paper that is non-porous: “The usual range of art papers are not suitable to use as the dye soaks in immediately. Yupo, which is used not only for art, but universally used for labelling, packaging and design, is perfect for my particular style. “Using it as a surface for the inks, I am able to capture patterns and shapes that are impossible to achieve on conventional papers. The use of isopropyl alcohol is also part of the process. Although diffcult to control, the results are very dramatic, as when the alcohol evaporates, the ink dries

years, and many of my enthusiastic attendees have carried on painting long after the cruises have ended. I consider it to be both a privilege and a pleasure to have played a small part in their creative journeys.” When back home in Read, Celia spends her days surrounded by photographs and artefacts collected from her travels which have also included a voyage taking in the Panama Canal from Los Angeles, via Mexico, Costa Rica and Columbia and another from Dubai to Singapore via India: “My travels continue to inspire me,” she says. “My work is mainly created using fluid based media, such as alcohol inks and epoxy resin, as both have properties which can be used to create totally unique pieces of art.” Throughout the process of merging colours around on a non-porous surface, Celia manipulates the pigments to produce breath-taking designs. “The inks produce fascinating distinctive patterns, as the pigments pool in unusual ways, to produce paintings which are expressive and striking. Along with the addition of other textures it is possible to create particularly contemporary paintings, which marry well with modern interiors.

“The process of resin pouring works in a very similar way to the inks. The result is very individual in appearance,” explains Celia who, before she retired, was a teacher of fine art and craft in the UK and overseas in Nassau, Bahamas and also in the US.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO CREATE PARTICULARLY CONTEMPORARY PAINTINGS, WHICH MARRY WELL WITH MODERN INTERIORS in beautiful abstract-style outlines. With practice, the medium can be managed to produce one off pieces of artwork.” A series of works by Celia can be seen at Longitude Gallery, Clitheroe. Celia undertakes bespoke commissions and individual and small group tuition. n

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME With no need to prime or sand, Chalk Paint™ is incredibly easy to use and the results are remarkable

H

arness the power of Chalk Paint™ to transform your home, from introducing colour and velvety texture to high street furniture, to adding pattern and personality to simple white floor tiles. “Without the need to prime or sand, painting MDF or metal furniture with Chalk Paint™ is all in a day’s work,” explains Annie Sloan. “Painting on floor tiles is also incredibly easy – the only skill you need is patience. “As tiles are non-porous, Chalk Paint™ requires a longer drying and curing window than usual. Leave plenty of time between coats and even longer before sealing with Chalk Paint™ Lacquer to finish and protect. “On flooring, a minimum of two coats of lacquer is recommended for maximum durability.Work methodically and thoroughly, tile by tile, to ensure you haven’t missed a spot. The full curing period for lacquer is 14 days, so take care not to scratch, chip or expose your newly beautiful tiles during this time. If you’re able, paint tiles before laying them, to allow the longest curing time for your handywork,” concludes Annie. n Chalk Paint™ from £5.95. Tiles: Antoinette and Barcelona Orange. Chairs: English Yellow. Table: Athenian Black. Chalk Paint™ Lacquer £21.95. Seat pads and napkins in Graphite ticking £34.95 per metre.

LET THERE BE LIGHT… Jason and Laura Kenny have transformed their leaky, old conservatory into a bright and airy family room thanks to a revolutionary WARMroof system installed by local experts

A

t the start of the year, British Olympic gold medallists Laura and Jason Kenny CBE decided that the conservatory attached to their newly purchased home, was in desperate need of some TLC. Due to changes in seasonal temperatures, the roof panels had moved and formed gaps which in heavy rain meant it leaked. When they decided they needed to refurbish the conservatory, they knew they wanted a solid roof and through Google came across Prefix Systems’ Refurbish My Conservatory website. Laura made contact and within 24 hours a local, registered installer got in touch to arrange an appointment to discuss the options. When the local installer T & J visited, Laura and Jason instantly felt at ease and not under any pressure. “We felt very comfortable with T & J and the WARMroof product, so we decided to go ahead,” recalls Laura. Tim explained the WARMroof structure

to Laura and Jason and they were impressed with his confidence in the system. Tim explains: “The WARMroof is the best solid roof on the market and we want our customers to have the best. It is a true warm-roof construction and is such a great system to install – we can have it watertight in just one day. Every customer we have worked with has been over the moon with it!” Laura and Jason were used to the light environment of their old conservatory and chose to have four Velux rooflights installed not only for light but so they could open them for added ventilation and after seeing numerous photos of the WARMroof with Envirotiles, they chose them to complement their existing roofing. The WARMroof arrived at their house palletised and due to a lot of pre-fabrication done before delivery, the initial build wasn’t disruptive and there was minimal mess. Now, Laura and Jason love their conservatory which has provided them with a liveable space for their family to enjoy. It is used as the main access to their home and also forms part of their kitchen which provides a dining space for family meals and entertaining. “We would definitely recommend the WARMroof system as it’s provided such a great living space for us,” agree Laura and Jason. “It is much cooler in the warmer months

and now feels like a proper room – a real part of the house. Prefix Systems have their own ‘Refurbish My Conservatory’ installer network and a large portfolio of trusted installers so they can always connect homeowners with someone in the area. Jason and Laura add: “We would recommend the Refurbish My Conservatory network as their registered installers were great from start to finish.” Visit Prefix Systems’ showroom in Blackburn to see a wide range of home improvement products and speak to the expert team about a local installer. n

JAPANESE GARDEN SECRETS Two events at Tatton Park are celebrating the 100-year legacy of their internationally renowned Japanese garden

L

earn all about Tatton Park’s story at the fascinating Mansion exhibition, followed by a visit to the Japanese garden. Thanks to a series of photographs taken at the time of its construction in 1910, along with original plans and drawings, this new exhibition shares some of the secrets of the Japanese garden, how it was built and the meaning behind its design, materials and symbols. Alan de Tatton Egerton, 3rd Baron Egerton of Tatton (1845-1920) visited the 1910 Japanese-British Exhibition in London, and was so inspired by what he saw, he decided to introduce his own Japanese garden at Tatton. What was created over 100 years ago remains, to this day, one of the finest examples of a Japanese garden in Europe. The legacy Alan left behind is a visual spectacle in all seasons, and Tatton’s gardeners help ensure it is still here for visitors to enjoy for another 100 years.

Japanese Garden: The Legacy of Alan de Tatton Exhibition runs Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm until 5pm until 1st November and is included in your Mansion entry ticket. The gardens are open every day from 10am-6pm until the end of October. Tickets and timeslots for both the Mansion and gardens must be booked online in advance at www.tattonpark.org.uk In the absence of the ‘real’ flower show this year, rhs.org.uk hosted a virtual

event called Tatton Park at Home in July. Tatton Park’s very own Head Gardener was among the list of experts featured in their online celebration of all-things gardening. Simon Tetlow’s film shares rare views inside the hidden world of the Japanese garden, plus advice for viewers on how to create an authentic feeling in your own Japanese garden at home. n rhs.org.uk/tattonathome

QUESTION TIME Gas or electric, chimney or no chimney, heat output and efficiency? Lucas Everett of Canterbury Fireplaces answers some your questions

C

I would like a media wall but I don’t know if I have enough space?

It shouldn’t be an issue, each and every media wall we build is designed specifically for the individual customer and their home ensuring it meets their own needs and style.

From start to finish we can take you step by step through the process. From showing you examples and styles in the showroom, to the design and installation. Our dedicated aftercare team ensures we’re there to support you every step of the way even after the job is completed.

Which option is better gas or electric?

There are pros and cons to both options. Electrics have become more popular as you have a lot more choice and styles to choose from. One of the key features of most modern electric fires are the HD flames,

Yes, same again, none of the electric fires we provide require a chimney, although we can design and install a bespoke false chimney if the customer requires. Recently, we have been providing this service a lot more as media walls have become more and more popular. There are also more

sing a design-led approach these lights are inspired by architecture and nature. The playful yet elegant designs are complemented by natural sustainable materials, bringing a bit of nature into your home. They are ideal for a relaxing bedroom night light or a feature light in that neglected corner of your living room. These sustainable eco-friendly wooden lights from Bright Corner, are made from FSC approved birch plywood, using a highquality fabric flex and warm white, low light LED bulb, offering a safe, long lasting product, whilst creating ambience and calmness in your home. Packaged with no plastic in simple brown boxes, the lights are protected with loose fill paper and posted in eco-friendly parcel bags made from Coex, a 100 per cent natural product. Using a CNC routing machine, the birch plywood parts are cut so you can see the natural layers of the wood. They are all cleverly designed to slot together, so no fixing is needed. Available in five unique designs Welsh Cottage, Lighthouse, Star Tent, Townhouse and Woodland, with a choice of three different fabric cable colours – natural jute, olive green and mustard yellow, plus a high-quality LED bulb, they offer the perfect choice of lighting for a design-led eco-conscious home. Following a decade working in the city, Bright Corner founder, artist and designer Chloe Harrison decided to leave the fastpaced life to concentrate on her young family and follow her creative passion. After having her first baby, she could not find a well-designed, eco-friendly, natural light for her baby’s room. So, she started sketching ideas to design her own. She then launched Bright Corner in 2018 with a range of lights designed for children and adults. Bright Corner believes in supporting small independent businesses and are proud that all their products are designed and manufactured in the UK and made by people that care. n

PERFECT PARQUET Woven Meena McDonald considers the Woven is a fresh take on a traditional benefits and beauty of different parquet design with its angular geometric pattern and interwoven shapes. The sharp styles of parquet flooring

I

nspired by 16th century French design, parquet is a versatile pattern with a rich heritage that can work in classic and contemporary spaces within any home. Its sophisticated and elegant design has certainly stood the test of time and you can now choose from textured hand-crafted woods or cool and contemporary stones for your flooring.

Amtico parquet

angles and twisted weaves look stunning in a single colour. When used in multiple tones it is possible to create a decorative and striking pattern.

Pleat

Pleat is beautiful in its simplicity, yet elevated by its perfectly precise angles and neatly balanced design. The brilliance of pleat parquet is that for such a seemingly simple design, there is so much opportunity to create something truly unusual and unique for your floor.

Amtico has a versatile collection of parquet floors with timeless designs, combining sizes and colours so there is something for everyone. Here are a few examples of their eclectic range:

Block parquet

A modern but authentic update to parquet that offers stunning simplicity using a single shape. Block parquet has been expertly balanced to offer versatility across products as well as laying options.

French weave

From a foundation of parquetry, Amtico have adapted classic wood floor geometry for modern day use. French weave is a crafted, woven pattern with the strength and balance for larger spaces.

Laying patterns

Once you have selected your parquet design you can use Amtico’s distinctive laying pattern templates and designs to add

character and bring your style to life to create a floor that delivers real impact. You can experiment with colours, products and patterns to create flooring that’s perfect for your space.

Karndean parquet

Karndean also have a premium collection of parquet flooring which brings the natural beauty of real wood to life. Through meticulous attention to detail and careful selection of some of the most beautiful and inspiring natural oak wood, the Karndean parquet collection includes their most intricate designs and realistic embosses. Each piece is handcrafted to reflect the unique grains and textures of natural wood, but unlike real wood, they’re able to design a parquet floor that’s not only attractive and realistic, but is also practical for modern day living. Parquet really does lend itself to any space in your home, creating a striking entrance hallway, a charming and comfortable bedroom floor or a more practical and hard-wearing kitchen floor. introduce so think about painting the walls and possibly installing a mirror on one of them, that you can plant around to soften the edges. That will reflect and make the most of any light there is.

THE BEAUTY OF BASEMENT GARDENS Photography: Can Stock Photo LianeM

Basement outside spaces are often thought of as dingy and dark, but there’s a lot you can do to transform them into stunning living environments

A

Photography: Can Stock Photo

basement flat garden may not be big and may not get a lot of sunlight, but with a little effort you can create a mini oasis where you can sit and chill out surrounded by foliage and flowers. Start with the floor surface. A lot of basements spaces have concrete floors which are not ideal for creating relaxing and

beautiful environments. Gravel is an easy and simple covering that works well over concrete – just remember to keep drain covers clear. Decking is another alternative and the perfect material for a family space or for entertaining. You could lay some bricks, tiles or slabs, but make sure you position them below the airbricks of the house and any damp-proof course. You need to get creative when it comes to garden furniture and pots. Think small for furniture and big for pots. In a small space, there is a tendency to use small pots, but in general, the smaller the space, the bigger the plants, the bigger the pots. Brighten up the walls. The gloomier the basement, the more light you will want to

Utilise your wall space. Attaching trellis for climbing plants or wall baskets provides your plants with space to grow upwards, and the addition of a wall fountain can make everything even more idyllic with the soothing sound of flowing water. A living green wall of shade-loving plants will fill the space with colour and seasonal fragrance and, with careful selection of plants, a green wall is something that will look good throughout the year. Right plant, right place. Fatsias, choisyas, aucubas, skimmias, viburnum tinus and fuchsias all grow well in shade or dappled shade, and acers and azaleas are at their happiest in light shade. Climbers such as the climbing hydrangea, winter jasmine and all sorts of ivy, along with many clematis, thrive in the shade as well. There are even several climbing roses that blossom in low light such as the scented, double scarlet-flowered Danse du Feu and Madame Alfred Carrière with creamy white fragrant flowers. n

For those with outside spaces that are slightly bigger than a basement, roses are on the list of gardening jobs for September from the Royal Horticultural Society: • Continue to deadhead roses, dahlias and delphiniums to prolong flowering • Collect and sow seeds from perennials and hardy annuals • Net ponds before leaf fall starts • Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damages spoils them • Start to reduce houseplant watering • Plant spring flowering bulbs • Clean out cold frames and greenhouses ready for autumn use • Prune bush and climbing roses

Or maybe you’ve redecorated your room and the beloved three-piece, which you really splashed out on, no longer matches quite so well. If either of these dilemmas is ringing a bell, you won’t need to look far for a solution. Every year, family business, Plumbs, has thousands of satisfied customers all over the country, but their heart, along with their skilled craftsmanship, lies in Preston.

Celebrating 60 years in business this year, this hugely successful company is still run by the third generation of its founding family. Recognised throughout the UK as the leaders in tailoring bespoke covers for furniture, they are also artisan reupholsters and interior design specialists. Speaking from its newly refurbished showroom at Brookhouse Mill, business development manager, Emma Singleton, is feeling excited about the future. “We spent

There are also examples of reupholstered furniture on display. “We recommend reupholstery for those truly treasured furniture items which really mean a lot to people,” explains Emma. “The item is completely stripped back to its base, in our huge factory, rebuilt and re-covered. It’s true craftsmanship at its very best.” As well as improving the showroom, the team are working on the imminent launch of a range of Plumbs own-brand furniture. “These are investment pieces, built to last, and designed to fit our covers perfectly,” says Emma. “Over the years, when rooms are updated, these pieces of furniture can be restyled to match with new covers. It’s a really sustainable option.” And, because it makes everything at its factory, including curtains, Plumbs can offer the whole soft furnishings design service. “All our home consultants are interior design experts, so we can help you restyle not just your furniture, but your whole room.” Now, that should have you sitting comfortably. n

College of Mohs Surgery. Mohs is a precise surgical technique for treating common types of skin cancer, done in stages, including lab work, while the patient waits. All cancerous cells are removed, while healthy tissue is left untouched, leaving the smallest possible scar. “Mohs surgery has the lowest cancer recurrence rates, highest cure rates and the best cosmetic results of any skin cancer treatment. I knew this service would make a huge difference to the health and wellbeing of my patients.” “Miguel’s phone call came at the perfect time,” commented Dr. Aslam. “It’s been my ambition to set up a clinic offering Mohs and advanced dermatology services in my home town, and what better place than Miguel’s beautiful clinic within Crow Wood Leisure. “It was clear our skills would complement each other perfectly, and having known each other for many years, we knew we’d work well together.” “Lesion removal is becoming difficult to obtain via the NHS, especially in Lancashire and Cumbria,” says Miguel. “Even if people can get to see their GP, there are few who have a dermatology speciality, and sadly some serious cases get missed or caught too late. “With Arif on board, we knew we’d be able to help more people from Lancashire and Cumbria, giving them safe, fast and effective private treatment that eliminates unnecessary wait times and worry.” Miguel’s wife Gill, Clinic Director and force for change at Discover Laser, was quick to set the partnership in motion. The clinic soon had a new purpose-designed theatre room in addition to their five existing clinical treatment rooms. In addition to Dr. Montero’s non-cancerous lesion removal, rosacea, acne and scarring treatments, Dr. Aslam will be available for

Author Andrew Stachulski tells the fascinating story of an ancient Bowland artefact

A

lthough the Forest of Bowland has long been a recognised term, the name is not so ancient as you might suppose. The clue lies in the word ‘forest’– originally a hunting ground – which speaks of post-Norman Conquest times and the days of large estates granted by the king. Nevertheless, Bowland contains a number of fascinating items of earlier date, and undoubtedly the Angel Stone is one of the most interesting. There are several versions of the Angel Stone’s discovery. According to Alice Peel’s ‘A History of Slaidburn’, it was found near a wall of Slaidburn Rectory by Dr Jackson, around a century ago, while Jenny Bradley, in her ‘Slaidburn: A Walk through the Village’, records that it was found by the Reverend Jones. After its discover the stone had a chequered career, eventually being kept at Whalley Abbey until the 1990s when the Reverend Chris Skerry, vicar of Whalley, allowed it to be transferred to the then new Slaidburn Heritage Centre.

IT DATES FROM THE LATE NINTH OR EARLY TENTH CENTURY – THE ANGLOSCANDINAVIAN PERIOD The Reverend Skerry and Ben Edwards, then a county archaeologist, held a meeting which featured a strong appeal from the latter, leading to the stone’s return to Slaidburn. Edwards’ son Crispin was at that time in charge of the Heritage Centre, which later became Slaidburn Archive. Later the Angel Stone was kept at the Pendle Visitor Centre at Barrowford for safekeeping, but now following the upgrading of the Slaidburn Archive building, it has finally come home. In form, the Angel Stone measures around two feet high by one-and-a-half feet wide, with a vertical taper, and has a maximum depth of eight inches. Intriguingly, it seems likely that the stone is part of a larger whole, which has been largely lost. An authoritative catalogue, the Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Culture, describes it as part of a shaft. It dates from the late ninth or early tenth century – the Anglo-Scandinavian period. The angelic figure has some interesting features, especially the pair of boots with

ANGEL COMES HOME elevated flaps – similar designs are known on certain Scottish monuments of the same period. Although St Andrew’s, the parish church of Slaidburn, dates mainly from the 15th century in its present form, there is little doubt that there was an Anglo-Saxon church on the same site. There is compelling evidence from the elevation of the site which bears the present church – Saxons habitually buried their dead on top of previous graves, gradually raising the level

of the churchyard in tiers. Inevitably this has led to speculation that other artefacts of similar age might be found. The very name of Slaidburn has Norse origins meaning ‘sheep pasture by the stream’. Though the exact age of the village is difficult to state with confidence, it is extremely likely that a well-defined village existed by 900-1000 AD, consistent with the age of the Angel Stone. Indeed, why stop in Anglo-Scandinavian times? A Roman road runs barely three miles from the village, taken over in part by the Hornby Road, or Salter Fell track, which some consider may even be pre-Roman. As to relics, the Angel Stone has some similarities, not least in age, with another stone found at Foulscales, near present-day Newton-in-Bowland, again close to Slaidburn. Finally, in her village guide Jenny Bradley noted the evidence of a Bronze Age burial mound, again in an area near the present churchyard. We keenly anticipate more fascinating discoveries from this corner of Bowland as we strive for an ever-greater connection with the past. n With thanks to Dr Fiona Edmonds, University of Lancaster, and Helen Wallbank of the Slaidburn Archive for their help in sourcing valuable information Andrew Stachulski is joint author, with Helen Shaw, of ‘The Forest of Bowland’, published by Merlin Unwin at £14.99

lifestyle Perhaps the best fun was the Beach Riding Achievement Badge session, which was held at Pilling Sands, with the focus being to educate riders on how to ride safely on the beach. An initial theory session taught members what research they need to do before riding on a beach, such as checking the tide times, the weather, avoiding sinking sand and marsh, the dangers to look out for and how to avoid them and of course, being courteous to other beach users. A ride followed in the evening sunshine. The whoops of joy as they cantered together in small groups down the beach could be heard from afar!

he Chipping Pony Club Summer Camp at Somerford Park was a victim of the coronavirus pandemic after Pony Club headquarters advised branches not to run a residential camp, so committee members got their heads together to run a one-day show jumping and cross country rally at Somerford Park, under the brilliant instruction of event rider David Llewelyn. Members were put through their paces and were well and truly back on form following their training in one of Somerford’s beautiful show jumping arenas and on the cross country development field. An evening rally of multi-discipline training was also held at Red Cat Field in Chorley, where Jo Baxter was able to improve

A show jump training session in Myerscough College’s International Arena with Jeanette Powell followed shortly after which consolidated the work done earlier that week, seeing the juniors completing an entire course of fences by the end of the session. Senior members also had a lesson to polish up their technique before Winter League starts in September.

WHOOPS OF JOY, AS THEY CANTERED TOGETHER IN SMALL GROUPS DOWN THE BEACH, COULD BE HEARD The evening went very well and despite driving to the beach in torrential rain, the sun was shining for the entire session and the members had a wonderful time. Outside of Pony Club, members Kaitlin Bolton and Grace Garstang have had the privilege to show jump at Bolesworth with British Show Jumping and Sarah Hoare and Erin Kopydlowski have their British Eventing careers well under way with some success. Well done to the Chipping Pony Club members! With an all-day rally to look forward to before school begins and the Winter League competitions in mounted games, show jumping, dressage and combined training looking likely to go ahead (albeit a little differently than we are used to) things are looking up. n

Ryan’s Juan Elcano had finished fifth in the 2000 Guineas. Cormorant, the Ballydoyle challenger, set the pace with Thunderous and jockey Franny Norton racing close behind the leader on his outside. In the straight, Ryan Moore on Cormorant made a bold bid to hold on to his lead. Highest Ground then went to the front with

THUNDEROUS WINS THE DANTE! It was a thrilling day for Highclere’s northern syndicate, when they watched their horse Thunderous win the Dante at York, writes Jason Fildes

W

hen we started out with an idea of having some Highclere horses in training here in the north of England, in our wildest dreams we couldn’t have imagined that, within two years, one of our first horses would win one of the most famous races in the racing calendar! Thunderous has now run five times, winning four and second once. He has been a tricky horse to train with a couple of setbacks, including inserting a pin in a hind fetlock at the end of last year, so all credit must go to trainer Mark Johnston and his brilliant team at Middleham. Having won a Group 2 race, we will now be looking towards the top races over a mile-and-a-half in Europe towards the back end of this year – and he will stay in training as a four year old to contest some big races next year too.

Renowned as the best Derby trial, the Dante Stakes at York is normally run in May. The winner of the Dante is usually promoted to the head of the betting for the Derby (run in a normal year on the first Saturday in June).

THE EXCITEMENT AFTERWARDS WAS UNBELIEVABLE! Obviously, this has been a very different year for racing with the Derby being run before the Dante (both in July this year). However, it was felt that the Dante was such an important race in its own right it had to be put into the revised racing calendar – and it attracted a top class field on the day. Sir Michael Stoute sent up the unbeaten Highest Ground from Newmarket who started favourite, Aidan O’Brien was represented by Cormorant and Kevin

just over a furlong to run but Thunderous was battling bravely down the centre of the course. He took the lead in the final strides to win a thrilling race by a neck from Highest Ground with Juan Elcano two lengths away in third. After the race, assistant trainer Charlie Johnston, said: “When it was announced the Dante would fall on this date we thought it would be the perfect race for Thunderous. We went to Newmarket for his prep race only 80 per cent fit in the knowledge that race would bring him forward and I still don’t think you’ve seen the finished article today. There’s a lot more to come and he’s very exciting. He’s got a big future.” As racing is currently behind closed doors, the syndicate had a get together on Zoom before the race and all his owners were watching on ITV. The excitement afterwards was unbelievable and we’re planning a massive party when we can all get together! n

Communication is Key

Use this time to have a sensible discussion with your partner about how you would both hope to proceed with the separation and consider the practical arrangements:

How Will Your Finances and Assets Be Divided?

The division of finances can be a tricky issue to tackle, particularly if you have shared finances and have been together for a considerable amount of time. Opening the dialogue early and being flexible in your negotiations can help you come to a solution which suits both of you. Additionally, if you own a home with your partner and both contribute to the mortgage, you should consider who will live where once you separate – will one of you will be able to take on the whole mortgage or will the property need to be sold?

Child Arrangements

IS IT TIME TO MAKE

A FRESH START? The current pandemic has been tough on us all, particularly so for couples who were locked down with each other while their marriages took the strain of these extraordinary circumstances, explains Antonia Love, Partner and Family Solicitor at Farleys

U

nfortunately for some, the pressure and stress has taken its toll leading to the irretrievable breakdown of a number of marriages. This certainly isn’t all doom and gloom though as it provides the opportunity for a fresh start while offering a much-needed light at the end of the tunnel. The current situation has undoubtedly caused some delay in the progression of divorces through the family court but there are some practical steps you can take now to ensure a smoother process going forward.

You should discuss with your partner how childcare will be arranged once you formally separate – whether your children will spend equal time with each parent or whether they will spend weekends with one and week days with the other. It is also important to consider whether your current situation with regards to employment and childcare is due to change, particularly if you are on furlough leave from work and whether a flexible plan will need to be in place to consider this. If your discussions can remain as constructive as possible right now, it will make things easier as you progress through your divorce proceedings. If you are finding it more difficult to come to any agreements, it may be necessary to take part in mediation with professionals who can help you to negotiate your agreements. Most importantly, it’s vital to know where you stand legally so if you are considering separation or divorce, you should speak with a family law solicitor at the earliest opportunity to discuss the next steps. Arranging a case management meeting is always a helpful first step. n

THE BIGGER PICTURE…

Travelling across the globe, Nicola Morley has produced a series of thought-provoking photographs that capture the imagination

P

hotographer Nicola Morley has worked all over the world taking award-winning images that have featured in prestigious exhibitions. Having worked in London, Switzerland and India, Nicola has returned to the Ribble Valley where she is setting up a studio and viewing room. Her time working in India led her to be named as a finalist in the massive Australian Head-On Photo Festival, with her image featuring in the main exhibition.

Educated at St Anne’s School in Windermere, Nicola went on to study at the Cordon Bleu cookery school in London. “I cooked for shooting parties in Scotland and went on to work as a chalet girl in Meribel, France and Canazie in Italy,” recalls Nicola, who also studied at secretarial college in Oxford. “I was working as a secretary, but I decided to do an HNC in TV production and went on to study a BA in Philosophy and Theology.” In her late twenties Nicola met her husband who was to go on to work in Switzerland – the couple lived there for 15 years during which time Nicola began to nurture her love of photography. She held an exhibition in Klosters and studied for an MA in Photography at the University of Westminster: “Studying at that level completely changed my view. I began to see photography as a means to tell a story – to help people understand the bigger picture. I want them to see what’s going on behind the image. It was quite a tough course to to do,” explains Nicola, who then returned to the UK splitting her time between London and Switzerland. “When I was in London living in Chelsea I went to a tea party and met a lady who was an artist. She was brought up in India and she wanted to have an exhibition to celebrate her artwork and her time there. She asked me if I would be interested in curating the exhibition, which was to be held in aid of the Saakshar School Fund charity. “I jumped at the chance. In return I was able to take pictures of the children.”

IT WAS SUCH AN ASPIRATIONAL SCHOOL AND FOR ME, IT WAS A LIFECHANGING EXPERIENCE

lifestyle Nicola recalls on the front door of the school, which was attended by youngsters from Delhi’s slums, there was a notice that read, ‘Until you spread your wings, you will have no idea how far you will fly’. “I wanted to enable them to dream so with the help of the teachers they drew their dream job and then dressed up as someone doing their dream career,” explains Nicola. Taking photographs of the pupils and of their drawings, Nicola’s thought-provoking images have been viewed across the globe. The first image of the series of a young girl, dreaming of becoming an artist, was the photograph that appeared at the HeadsOn Festival in Australia. “Our trip to India was really one of contrasts,” she recalls. “I was a white, middle class woman taking photographs of these young pupils who came from very deprived backgrounds. It was a tricky situation, so I was advised to conduct the project as a series of workshops, and I got the children and teachers on board. It was such an aspirational school and for

me, it was a life-changing experience. The children drew some beautiful pictures. “I had an assistant who helped me with the costumes, props and backdrops.” Following her trip, Nicola was asked to do a series of masterclasses and workshops in Derby and Birmingham, entitled East Meets West – based on her time in India. More recently Nicola has been shortlisted for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in London with her image, Grandma on Christmas Day – a photograph taken of her late mother Sylvia Hopwood. Nicola explains: “Due to the virus the exhibition was postponed but we have recently had news that we can now deliver our artwork to the Academy. I’m very excited to see what comes of that!” She has also recently been asked to take a picture of Catherine Penny the new High Sheriff of Lancashire and to take a portrait picture of Fiona Bruce, MP for Congleton, for the 209 Women Project where 209 female photographers took images of the 209 female MPs for an exhibition in the Houses of Parliament, to celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote. Meanwhile, Nicola is focusing on her commercial photography with Pickle Pictures, a company she has set up specifically for those wanting bespoke portraiture, for family and the office, animal photography and specialist food photography. She is also hoping to visit South Africa next year as part of her photography work and she is also currently working on a project, Winds of Change, which will form the basis of an exhibition at Towneley Hall in 2022. n

CHARITY F O C U S Live Ribble Valley takes a look at the many and varied charity projects that are taking place in towns and villages across the region If you have any charity news please contact: jan.woolley@live-magazines.co.uk

FAMILY’S 1000K RUN For charity chairman and retired supermarket director Simon Booth, fundraising is a real family affair. Simon, who has been involved with sight loss charity Galloway’s for more than 40 years, has signed up to the Great North Run Solo virtual event. But he won’t be doing it alone, as he has asked his wife Jill, and five children Beatrice, 20, Grace, 18, twins Harry and Scarlett-Tillie, both 16, and 11-year-old Arthur, to join him. Even Simon’s 91-year-old mum Mavis, who has dementia, will be walking laps around her garden and occasionally using her wheelchair. To add to their challenge, they have set themselves a combined target of 1,000km by the event deadline of 13th September. All funds raised will go towards helping Galloway’s continue supporting blind and partially sighted people across Lancashire and Sefton. Simon, who is a retired family director of Booths supermarket, said: “Our family has been involved with Galloway’s since the beginning, as both my father and grandfather were chairmen. “My children also actively support Galloway’s, as they have visited the centre in Penwortham and helped with activities. My two eldest daughters have also assisted during trips to the Lake District and had great fun. We have some runners in my family and they were looking for an activity to do. They found the Great North Run Solo, where participants complete 40 runs from June to September, and my wife came up with the idea of us all joining together to have a goal of running or walking 1,000km. There will be eight of us in total. Hopefully, my mum, who is 91, will be able to contribute a few kilometres.” The family will use running app Strava to keep a log of their distance and some members will even perform one run blindfolded. The Booths family started the challenge at the end of June. Simon added: “It will certainly push us, but hopefully we will have reached 1,000km by the deadline. Hopefully people will give generously and raise money for the best cause I can think of.”

PENDLE TO ROBIN HOOD’S BAY In memory of Ellis Eastham, his children Lucas and Claudia, along with his good friends David Bate and Nigel Bate and Nigel’s teenage children, Otis and Lola, walked the ‘Ellis Way’ from Pendle Hill to Robin Hood’s Bay. A total of 125 miles in seven days, they raised funds for MacMillan Cancer Support and Pendleside Hospice as well as funding a memorial bench at Barrowford Cemetery. The walk was done in seven stages starting at Barley then to Barnoldswick via Pendle Hill and Wheets Hill. The route also took in Burnsall, Pateley Bridge, Ripon, Thirsk, Helmsley then Lockton to Robin Hood’s Bay. The group was fortunate that the weather was mostly kind enabling them to complete the walk within the anticipated timescale. Waiting to celebrate with them in Robin Hood’s Bay were Ellis’ wife Jackie, his other two children Annabelle and Ruby, his mum and dad Peter and Violet and Nigel’s wife Juliette. A go-fund me page has been set up for donations. gofundme.com/f/xrb5a-the-ellis-way-challenge

NEW KITS An U13’s girls’ football team has received a £500 boost from housebuilder Redrow towards a new kit. Euxton Girls FC, has over 200 members across 14 teams, including two new teams, who play in the West Lancs Girls and North Valley Leagues. The U13’s North team are the lucky ones to benefit from Redrow’s donation and will be wearing the new kit next season. Club coach Michael Taylor says that like many grassroots teams, they have been massively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and so the sponsorship has been a huge benefit as the new season approaches: “The new kit will hopefully benefit the team for the next two years. We are very grateful to Redrow as the kits really help us to create a sense of identity for the different teams. We’ll continue to raise awareness of the club and all the achievements of the teams.”

HOME TRUTHS

T

he new normal is still a long way off. While I was in London I travelled by tube at midday and my carriage was deserted. I even managed to take a picture at Horseguards with no tourists in front of the guardsmen. We also need to safely bring our workforces back to boost our businesses. Eat Out to Help Out, the £10 off a meal Monday to Wednesday, is helping to do that. I visited Tastebuds in Whalley last week and Holmes Mill in Clitheroe – both businesses are participating along with many Ribble Valley eateries. Look at the Eat Out to Help Out website for participating restaurants and book a table. It’ll be a boost to you and the restaurant! While in Whalley I popped into Cosgroves and they told me one of the reasons businesses are doing well is that shoppers feel safe and they know the staff are all working flat out to ensure that the experience is enjoyable. I was really pleased to see customers milling around Clitheroe, Whalley and Longridge as they don their masks going shopping.

One Clitheroe business going from strength to strength is Ultraframe. They are investing in new product and are hiring extra staff. Ultraframe have been a major employer in the town for the 28 years I’ve been MP and I was very impressed with their enthusiasm and their commitment to research and development. I really wish them and their brilliant staff the very best of luck for the future as they continue to be UK leaders in their field. I joined a few people on the Clitheroe Castle ramparts to commemorate VJ day. It was very moving to see veterans turn out resplendent with medals and I’m delighted the Mayor Stella Brunskill and vicar Andy Froud, ensured that the day passed off with aplomb. The town crier Roland Hailwood was also in strong voice and looked terrific. I visited a farm in our area too and was delighted to hear that farming has continued to ensure we are well fed during the lockdown. I pay tribute to our farming community and hope that you will use local shops and look for locally farmed goods to

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans encourages his constituents to take advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and support local businesses, as we endeavour to return to a ‘new normal’

give a further boost to our economy – they deserve our support. I returned to London to finish casework and as I walked to work, I saw an amazing floral tribute at St Thomas’s hospital. I thought I would share this message each of us have taken to heart over the past few months. I wish all the recently re-opened businesses well for the future. Each of them deserves our support and our thanks. As my reference to London at the start of this article proves it is going to be a sporadic restart towards getting back to normal, but it is important we give it our best. The more we can safely get back to pre-Covid practices the better it will be for all of us. September will be an important month as schools safely reopen and other businesses extend their offerings. Let’s all do what we can to give Ribble Valley businesses and their wonderful friendly staff the support they need. Sadly a few places have closed – we now need to do our bit to ensure those that remain have a strong and profitable future. n

WILL DISPUTES IN THE COVID ERA Expert Tom Howcroft of Forbes Solicitors explains how Wills can be challenged

A

lthough our doors may have been locked over the past few months, the tidal wave of Will disputes has not abated. If anything Will disputes are becoming more common. The courts have physically closed their doors for the majority of, if not all hearings, but the wheels of justice continue to turn with telephone hearings and hearings by Skype. Claims are still being issued, court directions and orders are still being complied with, and court hearings are still taking place. Although the world may have come to a standstill, the very tight time limits to bring claims remain. There are two main types of Will disputes, those are claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (the Inheritance Act) and challenges to the validity of Wills. Claims under the Inheritance Act are claims for ‘reasonable financial provision’ and are essentially money claims against an Estate. There is a time limit of six months from the date of the Grant of Probate to bring a claim and claims cannot be brought outside of this time without the permission of the court. Further, there is a limited class of people able to bring a claim, including: • Spouses/civil partners and former spouses and civil partners • Children of the deceased

• A person treated as a child of the deceased • Those being maintained by the deceased immediately prior to death. If you have been left out of a Will, or believe you should have received more, then get in touch and we will be happy to have a no obligation chat with you to discuss how we can help.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT OF A WILL, OR BELIEVE YOU SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED MORE, THEN GET IN TOUCH AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO HAVE A CHAT Challenges to the validity of Wills are also common and are on the rise. There are certain grounds which make a Will invalid and they include: • Lack of mental capacity • Lack of knowledge and approval of the terms of the Will • Will not properly executed • Undue influence • Fraudulent calumny (this is where a person’s mind is poisoned against another, and because of that a Will is changed) • Fraud and forgery.

The time limit to challenge the validity of a Will is significantly longer than the time limit to bring an Inheritance Act claim. However, it is very important that any Will dispute is brought quickly. There is a risk that an Estate could be distributed and the proceeds spent or moved out of reach, which will make a claim significantly more difficult. Therefore, it is important to speak to us quickly if you have an issue with a Will. We act for local, national and international clients and we are well equipped to ensure we can take clients’ instructions thoroughly and properly even in the event we are unable to meet face to face. We can take instructions by telephone, email, using Skype or Zoom and our offices are set up to ensure we can hold client meetings at a social distance. n

VENUES

A

round 73,600 weddings and civil partnership ceremonies were affected by lockdown this year. This means that 2021 and 2022 will be much busier than usual for the wedding industry, as even the traditionally quieter days and months of the wedding calendar are being filled with 2020 postponements as well as new plans. Couples wanting to get married as soon as possible are opting for small, intimate weddings in line with the current rules of both ceremonies and receptions in the form of a sit-down meal being limited to 30 guests in England, often with a promise to those unable to attend of a big party to celebrate in the future, when rules allow. Planning a wedding for just 30 might not have been your original choice but could provide a unique opportunity to spoil your guests with an unforgettable experience, such as the whole party staying on-site for an all-inclusive feel. Eaves Hall, for example, has bridal suites and 30 bedrooms for all your guests as well as extensive beautiful gardens and grounds for your party to enjoy exclusively.

Sarah Varley takes a look at planning a wedding and how some of the region’s beautiful, boutique venues are perfect for a limited number of guests Venues have risen to the challenge to offer something small but perfectly formed. For example, Northcote are offering gourmet weddings in their luxury Louis Roederer Champagne Rooms which are perfect for up to 30 guests and the Coniston Hotel has a special ‘Love Won’t Wait’ package for 2020 weddings for up to 26 people. Browsholme Hall has now added to its range of venue offerings with the newlyconverted historic Cart Shed for intimate weddings for 20 guests. Perhaps a midweek wedding may be the answer. Couples planning weddings for 2021 are finding not only that wedding venues are booked up, but also churches, registry offices and wedding photographers. Being able to be flexible on what day of the week you hold your celebrations means many more options become available. Prices also tend to be lower when booking

a venue for a midweek wedding so you may be able to save money or add extra luxuries to your day. For example, Bashall Barn has a special discounted ‘Soulmate Package’ for weddings taking place on Monday to Thursday. Planning a wedding will also feel different this year. Venues are holding private tours by appointment only, which will give you the chance to ask all the questions you need. You may find that appointments to view venues are currently easier to obtain as the wedding industry is only just coming out of lockdown. This also means you may be able to view venues all dressed for weddings with fewer events actually taking place. We have always been spoilt for choice with amazing venues in the Ribble Valley, so seize the moment and you can still enjoy planning your very special day! n

education

When choosing a school for your child, it is important to get as good a feel for the place as possible, writes Sarah Varley

T

he best way to get an accurate assessment of a school is to see as much as you can – observing the facilities, the staff and pupils in action. Coronavirus and current restrictions have made this uniquely problematic this year, but schools have risen to the challenge of showcasing their offerings to prospective pupils and parents in a number of ways.

Virtual tours

Schools have responded to limitations on visits over the past months by creating virtual online tours. Filmed tours of the school, drone footage of the campus, grounds and facilities and video presentations from the Head or senior staff can be found on school websites to give parents an initial insight into each school.

Some schools offer live video tours, which work particularly well and offer a great, 360-degree view of the school that can be tailored to each individual family. They can give parents and prospective pupils the opportunity to see a school in action and experience each school’s unique atmosphere. Virtual visits can offer an introduction to the school’s values and history, show a selection of subjects being taught, provide insight into classroom settings and teaching provision, and show families the indoor and outdoor spaces, such as the dining hall and sports facilities. Live question and answer sessions may be held in small groups, or individual video calls may be available to address particular concerns or expand on offerings for a child’s individual interests.

Open days

As restrictions ease and children return to school in September, many schools now have open days planned, the dates of which can be found on their websites. These specially adapted open days will offer safe, socially distanced tours of

schools as well as the chance to talk to the Head and senior staff and ask any questions you may have. They allow you to see the way a school operates, observe pupils and staff in action and experience the atmosphere in person. Booking systems are in operation for open days, with numbers carefully limited and spaced out across the day or several days. The structure of open days are of course subject to change as the schools continue to work in line with the latest guidance on social distancing.

Back to school safety

Parents should be able to access comprehensive information on each school’s plans for safely reopening in September. This includes planning for extra safety and social distancing measures to mitigate risks, such as details on how pupils might be divided into social ‘bubbles’ to reduce the number of people they are in contact with daily. All this information should be provided on the school’s website or by directing parents to a clear communication channel for reassurance. n

AMAZING ENDEAVOUR Westholme School explains how it has helped provide thousands of meals for the vulnerable and tackled community issues enabling families and children to reconnect

S

ince the start of the lockdown period, the catering team at Westholme School, have been proud to be involved with the Thomas Franks Feeding Communities initiative. The team worked tirelessly to bring to life a community kitchen project which has seen thousands of meals provided to those that are most in need in the Blackburn with Darwen and wider Lancashire area. Westholme Catering Manager, James Pate, says: “School caterers, Thomas Franks, launched the project with a donation and since then, separate donations totalling over £20,000 have been received from Newground Together, the Duchy of Lancaster Fund, the Blackburn Carers Service, Age UK respectively and the Ivy St Community Centre. We have been able to provide:

• 10,100 meals to the most vulnerable people in Blackburn with Darwen, including; The Blackburn with Darwen (BwD) Carers Service, Ivy St Community Centre, Newground Together, Age UK, Youth Action, Blackburn Youth Zone, Healthy Living, Community Business Partners, Benefit Mankind, The Barlow, Nightsafe, THOMAS foundation, Salvation Army, ARC and Blackburn Foodbank. These meals have been publicised through various media outlets and local publications in order to gain more donations. • 1000 meals on a day free of charge to the whole community as part of the Thomas Franks BIG FEED. • 1000 pieces of fruit and drinks to the North West Ambulance head office in Blackpool.

• Donations to the Blackburn Food Bank. • Weekly donations of frozen meals and other food items that have been donated to us from our various suppliers nationwide. A hundred cases of popcorn, two pallets of frozen airline meals, 1000 Robinsons drinks, 800 innocent smoothies, two pallets of vegan fillets and pieces and 2000 pot pasta ready meals were all donated to the partners listed above and moving forwards, we hope this is something we can continue to contribute towards as long as we can.”

MANY DIFFERENT ORGANISATIONS HAVE RALLIED TOGETHER TO HELP THOSE THAT NEED IT MOST James adds: “The most positive part of the whole endeavour has been the way in which so many different organisations have rallied together to help those that need it most. From the first moment, the council were extremely positive and helped us greatly from a logistical and financial point of view and we very much hope to continue the relationship going forward.” During August, the school has also taken part in a government initiative named the Holiday Action Fund (HAF).

As part of the initiative, Westholme and Thomas Franks have also teamed up with Blackburn and Darwen Council and Spring North, a charity based in Blackburn that aims to collectively tackle issues in the local community. The scheme has enabled school children to receive healthy and nutritious meals and organised activities through investment provided by the Government during the summer.

Along with Thomas Franks, Westholme helped to supply 15,000 meals to Newground Together, Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, IMO Charity and Blackburn Youth Zone in conjunction with Government funding. Spring North also managed to organise activities and food for almost 2000 children within the local area throughout August. The initiative has been providing crucial necessities for families in the area and has allowed children to reconnect with their friends in a safe environment whilst enjoying a range of activities and a hot meal. Commercial Director at Westholme School, Viv Davenport, explains: “This is a wonderful, kind initiative which we have been delighted to be part of. It is more important than ever right now to serve our communities – by working together we have achieved very special things. Blackburn with Darwen Council has been tremendous in connecting us to those most in need and it has been a real privilege to help make a real difference.” n

EXCELLENT RESULTS

Nelson and Colne College is celebrating another year of outstanding results. The college recorded an A Level pass rate of 99 per cent. There has been no dip in the number of A Level students achieving A*-C grades – these remain at 80 per cent, with 55 per cent achieving A*-B grades and 25 per cent achieving coveted A*-A grades.

Students and staff at St Mary’s College are celebrating excellent examination results.

The college is seeing students progress to some of the top universities in the country, while others have successfully gained apprenticeships and employment. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

Commenting on this year’s success Elissa Best, Interim Principal said: “I am delighted to see our students achieve such exceptional results. The nursery has gone from strength to strength under the leadership of Mrs Nikola Stott.

THREE STAR JOY Fitness fanatic Ellie Armstrong, 18, from Accrington, netted a triple distinction – the highest grade she could achieve – in her BTEC Sport and Sport Science qualification. Ellie, a student at Accrington and Rossendale College, said: “My results are great and the qualification will enable me to gain an even deeper and more accurate understanding of the subject through my BSc Sports Science and Coaching degree. “I have enjoyed my last two years at Accrington and Rossendale College, because it is a fantastic place to study with modern facilities and brilliant staff members.”

BEST IN A GENERATION Rossall School increased the proportion of A* to B grades at A Level by a staggering 40 per cent and achieved the strongest results in a generation. The school had much to celebrate following the release of both their A Level results and Rossall Diploma results. The percentage of A* grades has tripled whilst the percentage of A grades has almost doubled. A third of all grades awarded were A*/A. This is an incredible achievement!

business

Miranda Barker’s wealth of experience, knowledge and drive are the perfect combination in her role as Chief Executive of East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, writes Gail Bailey

C

hatting to Miranda Barker, you immediately become aware of her enthusiasm for her role as Chief Executive of East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, and her commitment to it: “I love the role I am in and thoroughly enjoy being involved with a group of individual businesses all focused on supporting Pennine Lancashire to have a thriving economy,” she explains. Miranda who was born in Wales and was brought up in Yorkshire before crossing the border and settling in the North West in 1989, has always been self-determined and driven to her goals: “I’ve never really understood hierarchy,” she explains, “I have never seen any good reason why there should be barriers, everyone should be allowed to strive to be the best we can possibly be.” Even at school when Miranda realised the subject options she wanted to take at O Level did not match the timetable, she made an appointment with the headmistress to make sure she got to study the subjects she wanted. It is this confidence and determination that has seen her through such a successful career and life path. It was Miranda’s own choice to attend a girls boarding school in York and followed this by completing a degree in Environmental Biology at Liverpool University and then a Masters in Environmental Resources at Salford. “I chose to study the environment and sustainability just as people were becoming more aware of its importance,” she explains. Her studies certainly stood her in good stead when in her first job, her employers realised her qualifications just as ISO 14000 was created (the standardisation of environmental management which assists companies in minimising their negative impact on the environment).

Miranda recalls: “I had only been there a week when I was moved to a stand-alone role which allowed me to use my skills and knowledge and therefore also develop my career.” In 2000 Miranda formed her own company based in Wigan working as an environmental consultant for a wide range of sectors including food, chemicals, energy, waste, farming, manufacturing, engineering, automotive and aerospace. “It was just the right moment to do it – the right moment to take the leap!” she explains. Alongside running her own organisation Miranda was asked to join the Wigan Chamber of Commerce board following a presentation she delivered there and became the President in 2002 – a post she held until 2013 the year she also sold her business. During at Wigan Miranda worked with the council to secure and manage £27 million of public sector funding, creating 400 new businesses and 600 new youth jobs.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY GOOD REASON WHY THERE SHOULD BE BARRIERS, EVERYONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO STRIVE TO BE THE BEST WE CAN POSSIBLY BE “I sold my company and remained as a Director for three-and-half years. The first year was amazing and saw me travelling all over the globe, once taking four flights in two days and being involved in some amazing projects,” explains Miranda. “One of these projects involved working with a group of scientists in Italy who had developed a vaccine for cats to stop humans being allergic to them!” In 2017 Miranda made the decision it

was time for her to move on, although she was unsure of what to do. She then saw the post of Chief Executive of East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce: “As Chief Executive I get to work across all the departments at the Chamber who are active at local, regional and national levels. We help companies both new and existing across the area with their productivity, by helping reduce costs, providing qualified advice, training and developing staff, increasing sales and improving profits,” Miranda explains. It has of course been a difficult few months during the pandemic and the Chamber have been relentlessly supporting businesses to access grants and navigate the furlough scheme.

WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN EVERY CASE WE TOOK ON IN SECURING DISCRETIONARY GRANTS AND LOANS “During these unprecedented times we have been working very closely with individual companies to support them and have been successful in every case we took on in securing discretionary grants and loans.” There is still more that Miranda hopes to achieve within her role, especially using her vast environmental knowledge, including driving forward access to low carbon technology for businesses in the area. However, while her environmental and business acumen is well known, there are some surprising facts that people may not know about Miranda. She reveals: “I am a black belt at jujitsu and at kick boxing as well as being an avid Queen fan and fronting the odd rock band in my spare time!” n

ROSEBUD INVESTS £2M Lancashire County Council’s Rosebud Fund, which invests between £10,000 and £300,000 in businesses across the region, has reached a lending milestone of £2m. Since GC Business Finance was appointed to deliver the fund in July 2019, Rosebud has made 16 investments which have enabled businesses across Lancashire to expand and has directly resulted in the creation of over 100 new jobs. The £11.25m fund is aiming to create in excess of 100 jobs per year across 12 local authority areas in Lancashire. It focuses on sectors such as aerospace, advanced manufacturing, digital and creative, energy and environment, health innovation, and financial and professional services. The fund has recently invested £80,000 into Chorley-based chartered financial planners, True Bearing. The business, which operates across the UK, received its third tranche of Rosebud funding earlier this year to enable the purchase of a small independent firm.

Matt Robinson, Fund Manager at Rosebud said: “The Rosebud fund exists to support the local Lancashire region, creating jobs and supporting thriving sectors such as health innovation and creative and digital. It’s fantastic to see the fund reach this milestone, which highlights the extraordinary work of local businesses and the effect that the fund has had in enabling their growth. We are open for business, and we are looking to work with more ambitious companies across Lancashire to ensure the region remains prosperous.”

DATA SERVICE WINS GOLD When it comes to quality address data, Ribble Valley Borough Council is streets ahead. The council has received the Gold Award for Address Data in the national GeoPlace Awards. Quality data underpins the work of public services, ensuring they are targeted, efficient and cost-effective. And accurate address and street information play a key role in enabling people and organisations, such as the emergency services, to locate one another, which has been particularly important during the pandemic. John Heap, Ribble Valley Borough Council’s director of community services, said: “Good quality address and street data underpins many aspects of local government business – without it many of our services could not be delivered at all, let alone as efficiently as they are.

“Creating and maintaining large address datasets to an exceptional standard of accuracy requires specialist skills and expertise that are rare in small organisations such as ours. “We are enormously proud to have been recognised for the quality of our work in this field and I would like to congratulate our data custodian and his colleagues for this achievement.”

LOCKDOWN WILLS – VALID OR NOT? Challenges to the validity of Wills are not as common as people may think. Specialist probate disputes lawyer, Nicola Turner, considers how COVID-19 may impact on the number of challenges

I

n ‘normal times’ challenges on Wills are most commonly based on the argument that either the Testator (the person making the Will) was acting under undue influence (or duress) of another person – or they didn’t have mental capacity. A Will can also be challenged on the basis that it was not signed and witnessed properly. Such challenges are rare, particularly with Wills drawn up by solicitors, although there can be scope for challenge with ‘home made’ or DIY Wills. The pandemic has led to increased awareness of the need for a Will, however, the lockdown made it more difficult to ensure Wills are properly witnessed. There are reports of people using video calls or social media to have Wills witnessed remotely. Until now, such Wills would not be valid as the Wills Act 1837 requires Wills to be signed in the presence of two or more witnesses in the physical presence of the Testator. However, the Ministry of Justice recently announced a change to the law to come

into force in September which will apply retrospectively to any Wills executed between 31 January 2020 and 31 January 2022. In effect Wills witnessed by video link will be valid, provided additional guidance has been adhered to. This requires the quality of the link to be good enough for witnesses to see and hear everything, the process must be recorded, and the Will physically signed by the witnesses as soon as possible after video witnessing. It seems inevitable there will be a rise in validity challenges in future and we expect to see more cases where Wills have been drafted at home. Whilst this change in the law will be welcomed by many, it will still be important to ensure the execution complies with the new requirements. Any failures in that process could render the Will subject to a validity challenge. Not only can arguments be raised about witnessing of homemade Wills, they are much easier to challenge on more common grounds as the procedures that solicitors employ to try to make a Will ‘bullet proof’ will be absent from the process.

If a Will is invalid, it has no effect whatsoever and the estate is either distributed under the terms of their previous Will, or under the rules of intestacy if there is no prior Will. This can have devastating financial consequences for families – but is something that can be easily avoided by seeking professional legal assistance. n Nicola Turner is a senior associate solicitor specialising in inheritance and probate disputes at regional law firm Napthens napthens.co.uk

CELEBRATION TIME! Monks Contractors Ltd have just won their largest ever fleet hire contract with Lancashire County Council. Sarah Varley speaks to Monks Contractors to find out more. Photography: Kirsten Platt

ellor Brook based firm Monks Contractors are celebrating winning their biggest ever fleet hire contract with Lancashire County Council. For the next five years, Monks Contractors will be supplying 30 tractor units and

trailers to Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Renewables Ltd for a project to receive, treat and transport contract waste for Lancashire.

OUR BUSINESS CONSISTS OF THREE MAIN AREAS – WASTE HAULAGE, PLANT HIRE AND THE JETTING DIVISION Owned by Chris and Louise Monk, Monks Contractors is very much a familyrun business. Chris started the company in 1993 when he left school to begin farming with a few sheep, which he bought with his pocket money. At the age of 17, he met

Louise whilst working on a farm in Mellor and Louise ended up giving Chris a lift on her quad bike. The business started developing from there, and resulted in Chris buying his first tractor allowing him to begin contracting work and, between Chris and Louise, Monks Contractors was born. The early stages of Monks Contractors was primarily farming-based and operated from Louise’s family farm in Mellor. Business started to expand into landfill sites which included work on tanks and general tasks, such as cleaning weighbridges and making repairs. Things changed however, when one day Chris ended up repairing a lorry that had broken down and the rest is history. Monks Contractors continued to

has grown, they have acquired a number of customers including working with large blue-chip companies such as Veolia, Biffa, Suez, Viridor and Lancashire County Council. One of Monks’ unique selling points is being able to offer everything with regards to waste. They can do anything their customers need from processing and shredding, to loading and transporting, and they will always try to find a way to accommodate any customer request. expand and bought a plot of land in Mellor Brook to accommodate the growing business, which the team moved into in 2004. Today, Monks Contractors are very much a family run business with daughters Hannah and Lauren having key parts within the company and son Jack also involved. Even the miniature Dachshunds are a big part of the daily office life!

The business now consists of three main areas – waste haulage, plant hire and the jetting division, encompassing 70 employees and over 80 vehicles. The waste haulage department includes both walking floor and ejector trailers as well as roll-on/roll-off skip wagons. The jetting division comprises jetvacs, gully wagons, custom vans fitted with CCTV survey and root cutting equipment, and the plant hire division consists of over 60 plant machines such as loading shovels, shredders and excavators. As the company

103

Last month, Monks lined up the fleet of 30 new Volvo tractor units and 30 BMI ejector and walking-floor trailers that will be fulfilling the new contract, for a photo shoot at Clitheroe Auction Mart. Due to the size of the contract and number of units and trailers, Monks struggled to find a piece of land big enough to show off the new fleet together, however Clitheroe Auction Market offered space at their site, for which Monks are extremely grateful.

THE COMPANY MOTTO IS ‘WORKING TOWARDS A GREENER ENVIRONMENT’, WHICH IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THE BUSINESS They also boast an extensive six-bay workshop which has been equipped with the most high-spec technical equipment, where their team of trained and experienced mechanics, auto-electricians, tyre men and welders carry out the maintenance for the majority of their vehicles in-house. The company motto is ‘working towards a greener environment’, which is extremely important to the business. Their HGVs have the most environmentally friendly engines and whenever they purchase new vehicles and equipment, they always go for the greenest options available.

The contract with LCC and Lancashire Renewables is a real milestone for Monks Contractors and the team are very proud of what they have achieved as a result of everyone’s hard work and dedication. They are constantly looking at how they can improve and learn going forward, to allow them to continue growing and delivering an outstanding service. n

A 2.0-litre petrol engine delivers a thumping 306bhp, enough to fire the BMW M135i from 0-62mph in just 4.8 secs and a top speed of 155mph. Quick with a capital Q. It also comes with performance optimising elements such as a high-performance cooling package, M Sport braking system and M135i optimised M Steering. Put your foot to the floor – if you dare – and the ‘intelligent control logic’ system will send anything up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear axle. Milliseconds later, the xDrive system kicks in and becomes four-wheel drive.

THIS IS SEAT-OF-YOUR-PANTS MOTORING WITH GREAT LOOKS, PERSONALITY AND FEATURES For a car capable of monster performance, the fuel consumption and emissions are impressive... 39.8-41.5 mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of just 162-155 grams of CO2 per kilometre. An eight-speed sport automatic transmission with electronic selector lever adds further to the feeling of oomph (that’s slang for power incidentally)! Standard specification for the BMW M135i xDrive includes the M Sport steering wheel and new M Seats with Alcantara upholstery. This upholstery variant is enhanced with special BMW M piping and contrast blue stitching.

THE ONE… Brimming with attitude, the racy BMW M135i xDrive is a great looking car with lots of personality and it’s quick… very quick, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Roger Moore It is the only model variant to feature the BMW kidney grille in a distinctive mesh design and its surround and three-dimensional elements come in cerium grey. With double-spoke 19” alloys and LED headlights it looks better than smart; inviting to driver and passenger alike. All the latest technology tricks and treats are inside too with Live Cockpit Professional, comprising 10.25” Control

Display with Touch Function and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Available for the first time on the BMW 1 Series, the Connected Drive Package Professional offers Apple CarPlay, Concierge Services, Connected Parking and Real-Time Traffic Information. Did I mention Microsoft Office 365? That’s there too to synchronise emails, contacts and calendar entries, plus Skype for business calls with just a single click. In short, it means you are more connected than ever with full support across any number of situations, just open your mouth and ask! The BMW M135i xDrive is for people who like their cars – those for whom time spent behind a steering wheel is a sheer pleasure. Obvious though it may sound, it is the ‘1’ for anyone who really enjoys driving. n Bowker BMW Trident Park, Trident Way Blackburn BB1 3NU 01254 274444 bowkermotorgroup.co.uk @BowkerBMW @BowkerMotorGroup @BowkerBMW TM

plunge by £860 million. A further £162m was estimated to be lost on match day revenue as EPL matches were played out in empty stadia. Across all four leagues it was estimated at £305m*.

The EPL has the fifth most lucrative TV deal in the sport, and the biggest in world football. In the last three-year cycle combined domestic and international sales totalled eight billion pounds. It is thought Burnley, as one of 20 clubs in the Premier League, currently receive around £82 million per season in television money. However, a recent Deloitte survey shows income generated from Premier League broadcasting rights is forecast to

David Fearnhead assesses how our local clubs have fared post-lockdown

Burnley fared significantly better than nearly every other Premier League side. With an estimated £4m drop, only relegated Bournemouth had smaller match-day losses than the Clarets. In fact, Burnley’s lost income from match days were smaller than those of Championship clubs Leeds, Derby, Fulham, Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield Town, Stoke City and even League One Club Sunderland. Lost match-day earnings cost Manchester City an estimated £23.9m and Manchester United an estimated £17.8m, with champions Liverpool estimated lost match-day income totalling £12.9m. The Manchester clubs are also said to have led the way in the least cost-effective Premier League clubs when comparing the wage bill with league points gained**. It is understood United were the least efficient, spending an estimated £2m per

point delivered. City came in second from bottom with a £1.8m spend per point. However, Liverpool were comfortably mid-table with £1.1m. You have to go all the way up the chart to fourth place to find Burnley who spent an average of £685,630 in wages per Premier League point, compared to the £636,857 of relegated Norwich who traded their cost-efficiency for a place in the Premier League. Sheffield United topped the table with £250,370, with Wolves in second place (£521,983). Burnley’s Premier League form appeared to be unaffected by the Covid shutdown. They were 10th prior to lockdown, the same position they finished the season in. In truth they had already had their mid-season wobble. From mid-October to mid-January they lost 10 of the 14 matches played, but went into lockdown having steadied the ship. Whilst a 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City in June hurt, they were the only club to take a league point away from Anfield. In their fourth successive year in Premier League, it is understood that Burnley FC Holdings recorded a £4.3m surplus. That following a record pre-tax profit of £45m, after their top-seven finish in 2018. Sean Dyche has consistently worked miracles with one of the tightest budgets in the league, but the 2018/19 season should serve as a warning. Burnley flirted with relegation the season they played European football and if they are to avoid similar, they must give Dyche the money he needs to recruit and retain talent such as Nick Pope, James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil. Failure to do so will only add to the uncertainly which surrounds the club’s most prized possession, the manager himself.

When estimated match-day revenue losses in the EFL were calculated, Preston North End sat 18th with £2.3m, and Blackburn Rovers 21st with estimated match day revenue losses of £2.2m. Accrington Stanley finished the season

SEAN DYCHE HAS CONSISTENTLY WORKED MIRACLES WITH ONE OF THE TIGHTEST BUDGETS IN THE LEAGUE the best of the League One clubs with the lowest match day losses estimate of £414,990, Fleetwood Town were next with £433,675. Meanwhile Blackpool were 10th in the league’s biggest losses with £1.2m. Morecambe placed 21st in

the League Two with £294,320 in estimated match day losses. Burnley’s frugal nature is in stark contrast to their traditional rivals. Blackburn Rovers accounts for the year leading to June 2019 revealed operating losses estimated to be around £18.2m. Rovers’ supporters could be forgiven for having low expectations at the start of the 2019/20 season, and early indications were that that lack of ambition was justified. Blackburn won just four of their games from August to November, with half ending in defeat. Then followed a run of 22 games with 10 wins and just four defeats. Rovers fans were warming to the idea that a play-off berth might be possible, but a post-lockdown win was followed by three consecutive defeats as promotion hopes faltered. Expectations for next season will be duly realistic as fans nervously await what happens in the transfer window. Preston would have gone into lockdown still with hope. When the season was halted they sat in sixth. Even weathering a run of defeats through February and March. However, the enforced break did little to change the tide. They picked up just one point from their first four games post lockdown and finished the season in 10th. They’ll be hoping Daniel Johnson can find the net with more frequency when they return for the new season. n *Source: Business Rescue Expert **Source: BetVictor

GAME ON!

We should all try game when we see it on a menu, advises Duncan Thomas the Regional Director of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC North) as he introduces us to the shooting season

T

he traditional start to the game shooting season is 12th August, called the ‘glorious 12th’ as it’s an iconic date in the rural calendar and a celebration of a magnificent all year round effort, keeping our beautiful uplands in great condition. The red grouse is considered the ‘king’ of the gamebirds and a true wild bird, its habitat is the heather clad moors which in Lancashire, in late August, are a stunning purple colour as the heather comes into full bloom. A year-round effort from the gamekeepers ensures the grouse has an enhanced habitat full of nutritious new-growth heather, invertebrate/insects and a rich mosaic of bio-diversity. The chicks hatch in late May and in the right conditions thrive, eating small insects for the first 10 days and a warm, humid atmosphere is favoured.

Too dry, too cold or heavy rain can be catastrophic to these tiny chicks in the first few weeks. We can’t control the weather, but we can ensure that the youngsters are kept safe from crows, stoats, rats and foxes all of which can be legally controlled. The objective of course is to provide a harvestable surplus of grouse and the by-product is that many other species, including red listed ground nesters also thrive in the environment. Curlews, golden plover, ring ouzels, lapwings and many others use the uplands as a last

bastion of both safety and a food-rich place in which to rear their young. Other species further up the food chain also benefit including the merlin, short eared owl, hen harrier and peregrine. One of the Bowland Moors behind Dunsop Bridge had a hen harrier nest in which its young were tagged and fitted with radio trackers in a joint effort between Natural England and the gamekeeper. Hen harriers have had another great year breeding in the English uplands. Alas this year the dry hot weather over the summer and an ongoing challenge in the heather beetle, which eats the bark of the heather stem, has had a real negative impact on the grouse population and only a small number will be shot this year. But the investment in the moor will have been the same and that’s the amazing value that grouse shooting provides. Restaurants across the North will be serving this amazing, nutritious, low fat and delicious meat and if you see it on the menu snap it up – you’re supporting a fragile rural economy and communities that are isolated and rely on the revenue that this iconic bird generates. Enjoy! n basc.org.uk

GROUSE & FIG SALAD WITH TOASTED ALMONDS, RICOTTA, HONEY AND HERBS

W

ant to try one of Britain’s healthiest, most nutritious and delicious low-fat meats? If that’s a yes, then give grouse a try this season. Philippa Davis, international private chef and food writer, is a huge fan of grouse and enjoys using it to create fresh and healthy recipes: “I love to show how versatile this amazing natural meat is and how it’s quick, easy and relevant to today’s kitchen table.” This recipe shows just how vibrant, light and modern grouse meat can be. As it just uses the breasts make sure to use the legs and carcass to make an incredible stock. The cooked leg meat can be used in soup, pies, stews, stir fries, ragu or even stuffed into a flatbread for a fancy kebab.

Ingredients Serves four as a starter 4 grouse breasts Grouse marinade 2 tsp runny honey 2 tsp balsamic vinegar 2 tsp finely chopped thyme 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp olive oil for cooking Salad 4 ripe figs, cut into quarters 200g cherry tomatoes, cut into halves 300g green beans, lightly blanched 1 small bunch watercress 10g mint leaves 10g parsley leaves 10g dill, roughly chopped 200g ricotta 80g roughly chopped skin on almonds Dressing 1 dsp balsamic vinegar 1 dsp runny honey 3 dsp extra virgin olive oil

Method In a bowl whisk the grouse marinade ingredients together with some salt and pepper. Spoon out into a flat dish and lay the breasts flesh side down. Leave for 30 minutes. In a large bowl toss the figs, tomatoes, beans, watercress and herbs together with half of the dressing then place in piles on your serving plates. Divide the ricotta and almonds over the salads. Add the two teaspoons of olive oil into a frying pan on a medium/high heat. Cook the grouse breasts for about two minutes each side. Grouse breasts are best served pink, starting skin side down. Take off the heat and rest for one minute before thinly slicing and adding to your salad and serve. n Recipe by Philippa Davis

ENJOY A LITTLE LUXURY Guests and diners at one of the region’s leading country inns are thrilled to see the new innovative developments now available

E

ven through uncertain times the Cartford Inn is showing signs of ambition and evolution. The inn has a new menu in the restaurant, an on-site deli, a collection of luxurious rooms and, the latest addition, a series of greenhouses that have been scattered around the beautiful grounds, enabling diners to enjoy al-fresco style dining, whatever the weather. “The idea came from a picture that a good friend sent us of a business in Amsterdam using greenhouses at the side of the canal for dining,” explains Patrick and Julie Beaume, who add that diners feel safe and it will also extend the al fresco dining season. Renowned for its imaginative and delicious food, the Cartford Inn sources the best seasonal, local ingredients, making consistency their number one priority. The new menu, still features a mix of British pub classics, high-end French bistro dishes and other imaginative combinations. It is a tribute to head chef Chris Bury and a strong team of creative chefs. The team at the inn has been very proactive over the past few months, developing a number of innovative ideas like creating an online shop and introducing a takeaway service, TOTI at Home, from the on-site deli – an idea that has been such a success that it is being developed further. “We are working on expanding the online

shop and the branded products at TOTI – Taste of the Inn,” says Jeanie Beaume, who adds that the team are also developing the service so TOTI at home orders can be shipped anywhere in the country.

WE HAVE SEEN DEMAND INCREASING ESPECIALLY FOR THE BEST AND BIGGEST ROOMS Currently under refurbishment to offer more space and safety, the on-site deli is due to re-open at the end of September. Supporting Jeanie Beaume, Julie and Patrick’s daughter, George Sharpe, another talented chef at the Cartford Inn, will reveal a new level of delicious patisseries, a new range of TOTI goods and an afternoon tea to die for, which will be available to dine in or to take-away.

They have seen a huge surge in interest in ‘staycation’ enquiries for its rooms and luxury cabins: “Our two luxury cabins overlooking the river are extremely popular,” says Julie. “A stay in one of those with dinner for two in one of the greenhouses has be the safest option around and a great experience too!” With safety at the forefront of everything they do, not all bedrooms have re-opened in the main part of the inn in order to maintain physical distancing. As one of the region’s best country inns, the Cartford Inn has won three Great British Pub Awards and numerous other hospitality awards and, in unprecedented times, the team has stepped up to the mark and displayed an agile ability to adapt and evolve, keeping the inn ahead of the industry. n

REVIVING OLD TRADITIONS

D

esigner Ella McIntosh flies the

Award-winning pewtersmith flag for the traditional craft of pewtering. Brought up Ella McIntosh from the Ribble in Clitheroe, she attended Valley uses this age-old craft to Clitheroe Royal Grammar School up until design beautiful, contemporary she was 16, when she decided to pursue her homeware love of art and design at Blackburn College.

She went on to Buckinghamshire University to study a BA Hons in Designed Jewellery and Silversmithing and graduated with First Class Honours. “It was while I was studying at Buckinghamshire that I fell in love with pewter in my second year when I created a piece for the Worshipful Company of Pewterers’ Pewter Live 2006 student competition. The piece went on to win two awards – first prize and best in show. This kick-started my pewtersmithing career as I decided to specialise in the metal for the remainder of my degree,” explains Ella. “Pewter has a slightly different way of working, compared to silver, as it is softer with a lower melting temperature. These were the properties that drew me to it alongside pewter’s long-standing history on our tables.”

Once Ella had decided to specialise in pewter she travelled to Sheffield to undertake work experience with pewter manufacturers A R Wentworths, which enabled her to work alongside their master smiths for an intensive learning experience: “I started to transfer my skills from silversmithing to pewtersmithing,” recalls Ella, who then returned home to Clitheroe, where she worked from a small studio at her mum’s, as well as working full time.

I ENJOY HAVING AN OPEN STUDIO WHERE MY CUSTOMERS CAN POP IN TO SEE THE TOOLS AND HAND PROCESSES I USE TO CREATE MY CONTEMPORARY PEWTER HOME AND TABLEWARE “I started with a basic home studio and minimal tools, crafting in a tiny shed, which enabled me to gradually build my business over three years. As I developed my designs, I sold my pewter at local craft shows across the North West until I was ready to leap into a full-time studio which became available.” Working from a studio at Manchester Craft and Design Centre since 2012, Ella has a dedicated workspace in Manchester’s independent Northern Quarter: “I enjoy having an open studio where my customers can pop in to see the tools and hand processes I use to create my contemporary pewter home and tableware.

arts&culture

“Pewtersmithing involves many processes and lots of different tools depending on which design I want to make. As I handmake every aspect, from raw material through to finished piece, it means my days can be extremely varied. “In my work I often combine many different processes to make one design. I am particularly drawn to sheet metal work. This is the process of turning flat sheets of metal, in my case pewter, into 3D forms and designs. It can involve a whole variety of skilled traditional processes such as hammering, soldering, press forming and polishing. “I also use pewter casting processes. I make moulds from materials such as cuttlefish bone, silicone rubber or sand. I then melt and pour the molten pewter into the moulds before using traditional tools to finish items such as keyrings, spoons and brooch pins or I combine them with my sheet metal work to create larger items such as candlesticks.” The processes and tools that Ella uses have been handed down through generations of pewtersmiths and metalworkers. As many industries have introduced modern technology Ella is passionate about creating all her designs by hand, keeping the flag flying for traditional making methods whilst combining them with her stunning contemporary designs. Alongside her collections of table and homeware she also sells her work

from galleries and has been commissioned to work on a number of prestigious, individual pieces. “I thoroughly enjoy making these as they are usually a one-off, unique design for customers which we work on together to signify a special aspect of their lives and which will be cherished for years to come.”

I ALSO USE PEWTER CASTING PROCESSES. THIS MEANS I MAKE MOULDS FROM MATERIALS SUCH AS CUTTLEFISH BONE One of her first commissions as a full time pewtersmith, was to make commemorative bowls for Ribble Valley 2012 Olympians Samantha Murray and Jon Schofield: “These were so enjoyable to make as I wanted the bowls to be directly inspired by their respective sports. “I carefully crafted each, carving a mould from cuttlefish bone, an age-old technique, before casting the molten pewter,” recalls Ella. “This involved sculpting Jon Schofield in tiny canoes and Samantha Murray’s modern pentathlon events in minute detail. Once these were cast, they played out across the polished surface. The pewter bowls were then combined with handcrafted wooden stands made by master woodworker Paul Case.” More recently Ella was awarded two prizes at the Worshipful Company

119

of Pewterers at the 2016 Pewter Live competition and her pewter workshop programme was recognised by the National Craft and Jewellery Skills Award at Creative & Cultural Skills 2018. “I enjoy teaching people new skills in my workshops and to be creative while sharing my love of pewtersmithing is a privilege.” At the end of last year Ella returned to the Ribble Valley to showcase her work at Clitheroe’s Platform Gallery Northern Star Exhibition: “I absolutely love and appreciate being asked to exhibit my work at the Platform Gallery alongside other fantastic makers. They have supported my career since I first began making in Clitheroe and their support was a big factor in the success of my fledgling business. “I still have customers who have bought an early piece of my work and have followed my pewtersmithing journey over the last 10 years, which is lovely.” n

NORTHERN STAR I t’s 4.30pm on a Thursday and I am standing at the stage door of The Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End where I’m greeted by Lancashire-born stage and screen star Cat Simmons, who has just finished her matinee show in the hit Tony and Laurence Olivier award winning musical, Come From Away. Back in the days when we didn’t need to adhere to social distancing, she greets me with open arms before we walk to a nearby restaurant: “I’m starving!” Cat says as we sit down for a bite before she has to return for the evening performance, which I was lucky enough to see. “I feel most at home when I’m on stage,” Cat says as we both delve into a plate of rosemary fries, and I can see why. Cat’s desire and talent for performing began at a very young age, as she explains: “My dad was a singer and I would regularly accompany him to his shows, jumping on stage to perform along with the band.” It’s these fond memories that enhanced Cat’s childhood and made her the West End performer she is today.

IT’S BEEN A TOTAL JOY TO WORK ON THIS PROJECT WITH SUCH BRILLIANTLY TALENTED PEOPLE Attending Pat Eakets School of Dance and Drama in Blackburn, Cat’s teacher gave her the support and attention she needed in dance as a young girl: “There have been a number of people who have believed in me along the way. Mrs Hughes, my tap teacher being one.” As well as financial backing from local businesses, Cat’s mum and dad worked hard to help make her dreams a reality and little did they know what a success she would be. As a child, Cat won parts in TV series Children’s Ward and Emmerdale before attending the Oldham Theatre Workshops where drama tutor David Johnson encouraged Cat’s raw ability, eventually leading her to perform in plays at the Oldham Colosseum. Through talent and determination, Cat’s emerging career as a ‘triple threat’ – the stage term for someone who is able to act, sing and dance – began to snowball and at the age of 16 she attended the Phil

Winston’s Theatre Works in Blackpool where she was given individual training. “We were a close-knit family and still are today,” Cat adds. Just six months after starting her training, at the age of 17 Cat was cast in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar, later playing Candy in Whistle Down The Wind before returning back to Jesus Christ Superstar where Cat played the only female lead role of Mary Magdalene: “That was an exciting time for me. That instant live audience reaction really adds to your experience as a performer and makes you hone your craft, I learned a lot from those roles.” As well as theatre, Cat’s screen career has been just as fruitful playing Sista Twista in Hip Hop Drama Life and Lyrics, Scarlet Anderson in Family Affairs, Emma in TV drama Ordinary Lies but perhaps her part as DC Kezia Walker is what people would most recognise her for. For three years Cat played this character in the long-running ITV drama, The Bill. “It was the scariest thing I ever had to do as there were some well-respected actors in The Bill at the time and I had to be on my game.” After various theatre performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with The Young Vic, Cat was cast as the role of Nancy in musical legend Cameron Macintosh’s Oliver! “It was a thrill working with Cameron. He’s an incredibly, passionate and driven man.” As Cat continued to balance roles on both stage and screen, her performance in the classic musical Sweet Charity at The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester was a particularly pleasurable experience for her: “The theatre is one of my favourites to work in, a beautiful place with a brilliant atmosphere. I absolutely loved it.” With Cat’s experience as a performer it comes as no surprise that she was cast as Hannah in the popular musical Come From Away. The story itself centres around the 12 days following the 9/11 attacks, telling

what transpires when 38 planes were ordered to land with passengers arriving in the small town of Gander in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Cat’s character is based on a real-life person, whose main motive throughout the musical is to get in contact with her firefighter son just after 9/11.

I FELT A DUTY TO PORTRAY THE TRUE LIVES OF THESE PEOPLE AND IT MADE ME BRAVER AS A PERFORMER “It’s been a total joy to work on this project with such brilliantly talented people. It was a challenge playing Hannah as I have never played someone older than me. I felt a duty to portray the true lives of these people and it made me braver as a performer.” With five weeks of rehearsals and a preview in Dublin, which went extremely well due to the Celtic undertones and energetic live folk band accompanying the cast every night, the 12 lively principal roles enabled the tight knit cast to become a family and the morale certainly shone through on stage. Reviewing Come From Away, Time Out says: “This miraculous masterpiece is totally, soul-feedingly wonderful.” While The Times says: “This musical gets everything right. Irresistible and inspiring.” A line that particularly stands out in the musical and one which certainly applies to Cat is, ‘I was one of those kids who always knew what I wanted’. Seeing her on stage was an example of just what a young girl with dreams, determination and aspirations can do and it was a privilege to see her in her element, doing what she does best. n

GOOD READ Lauren Molyneux curls up with a good book to review a latest best seller by local author Catherine Finch

Walking Alone Catherine Finch The first novel in this two-part series, Catherine Finch’s debut Walking Apart, saw the fabric of David and Helen’s 30-year marriage begin to fray when Helen threw herself deeper into her already very demanding job, and David was left to twiddle his thumbs and stew in a lonely retirement. With David receiving attention from another woman in his walking group, eventually choosing to seek comfort in her companionship, and Helen allowing work to dominate her life and deteriorate her health, Walking Apart is a story that any reader can connect with, a novel ultimately about choice and duty, with real characters, beautiful description, and a plotline readers cannot help but become invested in. The second instalment, Walking Alone, released in July 2020, resurrects Finch’s characters, whilst also resurrecting secrets and truths that were never truly buried at the close of the first, examining familiar themes and the feelings and anxieties of these characters with an even closer eye. After choosing to hide the full extent of his affair in an attempt to protect his wife, David’s world becomes unravelled when his secrets are exposed, and the equilibrium in his family seems to implode. As Helen struggles to come to terms with the actions and deliberate deception of her unfaithful husband, David decides the best thing he can do is to give his wife the space she needs and take himself off to Spain to complete the pilgrims’ walk of the Camino de Santiago. Set against a dynamic backdrop of green pastures, mountainous landscapes, and long, winding, well-beaten tracks, Walking Alone sees two soulmates attempt to overcome a black period in their past, face their hurt and move forward, with the steady reassurance provided by putting one foot in front of the other.

TOP PICK

David and Helen’s journey continues in the second book of Catherine Finch’s series which sees the complications of life ironed out when characters decide to focus simply on putting one foot in front of the other.

As heart-breaking as it is heart-warming, Walking Alone follows in the steps of its predecessor, and is a well-rounded novel providing a thoroughly enjoyable read. With fully developed characters, convincing dialogue, and a host of beautiful settings, it’s a novel which seeks to highlight the beauty of the present, the value of the little things, the kindness of strangers, and the optimism and sense of perspective that can be gained when life is stripped back to the basics. With each step David and Helen take on their journey, and each obstacle the couple overcome, they begin to advance beyond the turbulent times within their relationship, and their love is secured with an undeniable strength. Catherine Finch draws upon her first-hand experiences of walking the Camino de Santiago to deliver a story which is bound to stick with readers. You can discover more about the author and purchase any of her books from the website: www.chaffinchbooks.co.uk, or visit Amazon.co.uk, where Catherine’s books are available in Kindle or paperback format. Visitors to Clitheroe can pick up a copy from Number 10 bookshop, or from Fred Holdsworth booksellers in Ambleside. n

MAKING A MOVE

D

uring the Covid 19 pandemic the housing market, like most industries in the UK, came to a grinding halt with very few viewings permitted, and like many sectors these were transferred to being done online. Solicitors and removal services all ceased and it was a negative forecast predicted by many in the media. However, it appears these forecasts were wrong and fast forward to current trends and house prices in the UK have grown, with the property sector showing an unexpected ‘mini-boom’ as lockdown restrictions are eased. This has been further helped by the government’s relaxation of stamp duty on the first £500,000 which has been a window of opportunity for many buyers. Fantastic news for those looking to eek the most out of their budget, many of whom will now be able to move into a larger property, one which perhaps better meets their needs without the added financial pressure of having to pay thousands of pounds in stamp duty. Coupled with this, many of us have spent more time working from home

Amidst the recent global pandemic predictions for the property sector were a concern – however nothing could be further from reality as local estate agents enjoy a surprisingly buoyant and competitive market, writes Gail Bailey and there is an understanding that this may continue in the future, making many people consider their surroundings and what they need from their property. For some this has involved wanting to move

THERE IS WITHOUT DOUBT SOME MOMENTUM AND CONFIDENCE AT PRESENT. THE STAMP DUTY HOLIDAY HAS ALSO HAD A POSITIVE IMPACT further into the countryside and property developers, who also had to down tools, are now back in business and seeing a growing demand for homes, especially in more rural locations. Lockdown made those who were already considering a house move eager

with anticipation for estate agent doors to reopen, and there has been a steady increase in enquiries since rules were relaxed. The market is competitive with hopes it will continue to get busier. Edward Snowden, Director of Mortimers and Fine and Country told us: “Following an uncertain period for everyone, it is pleasing to see that the levels of activity in terms of valuations, viewings and sales are exceeding levels beyond where they were prior to lockdown. It appears people have been spending their time at home gathering thoughts about moving be it upsizing, downsizing or relocating, and there is without doubt some momentum and confidence at present. The stamp duty holiday that runs until 31st March 2021 has also had a positive impact on the market.” n

BUILD, BUILD, BUILD

Zara Moon Architects explain the new rules when it comes to building new homes and how land is set to be earmarked into three categories

T

o revive our economy and support growth, Boris Johnson’s strategy is to, ‘Build, build, build’. New laws were laid in Parliament in July aiming to deliver much-needed new homes, revitalise town centres, allow businesses to adapt quickly and cut the red-tape. The new rules, which will come into effect by September, will mean full planning applications will not be required to demolish and rebuild unused buildings as homes and commercial and retail properties can be quickly repurposed to help revive our high streets and town centres. This will help our high streets and town centres to provide more space for new

businesses and help them to adapt quickly to what consumers and businesses need. Pubs, libraries, village shops and other buildings essential to communities will not be covered by these flexibilities, recognising these form part of the fabric of areas along with theatres, concert halls and live music performance venues, which are to be saved for future generations. Homeowners will also be able to add up to two additional storeys to their home to create new homes or more living space for growing families through a fast track approval process, with a requirement to carefully consider the impact on neighbours and the appearance of the extension.

COUNCILS WILL ALSO BE TOLD TO PUSH THROUGH PLANS The government is also in the process of setting out plans to reform England’s seven-decade old planning system to deliver more high-quality, well-designed homes and beautiful and greener communities for people to live in. The intention is to cut out bureaucracy to get Britain building, while protecting high standards. The biggest change will see land being divided into three categories: Growth, Renewal and Protected. On land earmarked for growth, new homes, schools and hospitals will be allowed to be built automatically, with councils unable to veto. Councils will also be told to push through plans on land marked for renewal.

Protected land will include green belts and areas of natural beauty, where new building plans will not be allowed. Other key changes in the proposal include: • All new homes should be carbon neutral by 2050 • All new streets should be tree-lined • A ‘first homes scheme’, which would give a 30 per cent discount on new builds to first-time buyers, locals and key workers • A national charge for developers, to replace the existing Section 106 agreements and the Community Infrastructure Levy. This would fund schools, roads, surgeries and similar projects, as well as a proportion of affordable homes The Government is yet to release further details on how their strategy will be implemented in practice. At ZMA we are reviewing the Government guidance regularly and each month we will provide you with further information on how this may affect your home, land or business. n Contact us if you have a project you would like to discuss with the team
