YORK’S FESTIVAL OF FAIRTRADE
THE BIG SWAP 2010 JOIN THE BIG SWAP AND SUPPORT FAIRTRADE IN 2010
Nioka will speak at a public meeting on Friday 5th March at 7.30pm at York St. John University on Lord Mayor’s Walk. Everyone’s welcome at this free event.
Nioka cutting Fairtrade bananas. Now that is one happy lady!
Now in its fifth year, York’s Festival of Fairtrade continues to grow, reflecting the success of Fairtrade nationwide. Over a hundred events will take place in York during the two-week festival from 22nd February to 7th March. Events will include sales, tastings and events at schools, community groups and at the city’s universities, and churches, not to mention York’s famous annual Fair Trade Market. This year, York will play host to a visit from a Fairtrade banana farmer, Nioka Abbott, from St. Vincent in the Windward Islands. She will be able to tell residents first hand of the difference that Fairtrade has made to the lives and to the wellbeing of families and communities from St. Vincent.
The three day York Fair Trade Market will take place on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th March. Parliament Street will be filled with a wide variety of colourful stalls selling Fairtrade food & drink, crafts, clothes, bags, jewellery and fashion accessories. At the market on Saturday 6th March there will be a day of free entertainment including the infectious sound of samba, music and dancing from around the world, and celebrity appearances. Look out for events near you by visiting www.fairtradeyork.org.uk or picking up the Festival Programme, which will be available from Tourist Information and Fairtrade-supporting shops and churches all over the city. MAKE A MOVE TO VISIT AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL STREET
Another rallying call from us at Live&Love comes as a big roadworks scheme is set to close Gillygate to vehicles for six weeks from 22nd February. There is the risk that this closure will hit trade at some of our favourite independent boutiques and eateries, which would be such a shame. The street, home to the likes of Snowhome, Millers Yard, Blue Ballroom, and Shine, will be open to pedestrians throughout the roadworks and we’d like to play our part in supporting this often overlooked cultural gem.

YORK GOOGLE AWARDS YORK IS CONTENDER FOR “BRITAIN’S BEST STREET 2010”
York has been shortlisted in all three categories in the first ever “Google Street View Best Streets Awards” and with your vote it can beat the other contenders to the title of “Britain’s Best Street 2010”. The awards are a celebration of the most-loved streets in the UK. Now that the panel of travel, fashion, and food experts have compiled the shortlist of 50 streets in 25 different cities, it is open to the public nationwide to vote for their favourite.
Gillygate © www.flickr.com/photos/kens_eye
It’s only a few steps from the heart of the city and has a collection of products and services you won’t find anywhere else. It’s well worth visiting if only for the best home made apple pie we have ever tasted from Tarts and Titbits. Make the effort and venture a few steps outside the city walls to support your local business owners. It’ll be worth it! FOR MORE INFO AND RELATED LINKS ON ALL OUR STORIES GO TO WWW.LOVEYORK.ORG
These York streets have made the shortlist: Fossgate - Britain’s Best Foodie Street Stonegate - Britain’s Best Fashion Street Shambles - Britain’s Most Picturesque Street You can vote at www.maps.google.co.uk/ beststreets between now and February 28th, with the results announced in March.
Google will work with the winning streets to create a bespoke Google Street View tour, created to highlight the key retailers and points of interest, allowing the world to find out more about the final choices. If you’re passionate about the food, fashion, and history on these streets then take a few seconds, and three clicks to cast your vote. FINGERS CROSSED!

Nutrition Therapy is helping people to become fitter and healthier. It combines science with naturopathy in order to return the patient to a state of good health. It’s holistic and is designed to treat the body as a whole - curing the causes of problems, not just the symptoms. If the thought of slogging away in a gym drives you back to the sofa, there are more relaxing and fun ways to increase strength and flexibility. Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates have brought a sense of increased well-being to thousands, creating healthy bodies and alert minds.
Become centred, focused, and detach yourself from the thoughts that continually overload your mind. Through the wise words of Buddhist teachers, practicing meditation and yoga, you can renew the energy you need to give life to your aspirations. Open up that inner, creative you. Art, craft and textile courses are plentiful in York. Beginner or experienced, half the fun comes from being with others. You will be surprised by the results of your creativity. YORK’S VERY OWN HERITAGE CHAMPION, DAVE TAYLOR, INVITES YOU TO PEASHOLME GREEN, YORK’S NEWEST CREATIVE HUB
It’s still a bit of an undiscovered corner of York, even to residents, but St. Anthony’s Hall - a Grade 1 Listed Building and one of our four medieval Guildhalls - has been opened to the public since 2008. Since then, the gardens have been restored, an Italian Deli has opened, and now a contemporary art gallery in the grounds is making the news too. The Quilt Museum and Gallery looks glorious in St. Anthony’s Great Hall and is Britain’s first museum dedicated to quiltmaking and textile arts. The earliest piece of patchwork here dates from 1718 but as well as conserving early examples of textile design the Quilt Museum also hosts exhibitions of contemporary design featuring the art of quilt-makers from around the world. The New School House Gallery showcases exceptional studio ceramics, jewellery, glass and textiles. The Gallery is housed in a Grade II listed former schoolhouse built at the turn of the last century. The Gallery is set in beautifully landscaped gardens designed by Annette Parkes of Bishop Burton College, which extend up to the city walls.
‘ceramic milk cartons, by Hanne Rysgaard’
The current show at the New School House Gallery, Home, is an exhibition of contemporary ceramics, sculpture, paintings and textiles exploring the theme of ‘Home’, personal and domestic space, memory and childhood. It includes contemporary tableware by Linda Bloomfield, Rachel Dormor, Hanne Rysgaard and others ’12 jugs by 12 makers’ silver work by Grant McCaig and Sarah Stevenson, paintings by Emma Whiting, sculpture and paintings by Liadin Cooke, and textiles by Ellie Evans, Lewis and Louisa Creed and others.
The Quilt Museum and the New School House Gallery are complemented by the café/restaurant La Langhe, direct importers of fine Italian wines and food from small producers. In short, the whole complex has become a superb gem of artsled regeneration in the way I envisaged it could, when I first saw it heading for dereliction in 2004. Thanks to a bit of vision and the intervention of York Civic Trust and York Conservation Trust, it has been brought back to life. www.quiltmuseum.org.uk www.schoolhousegallery.co.uk www.lelanghe.co.uk

ou will find no indulgent readers homes featured in this edit, no glass walled penthouses, no six figure kitchens nor gleaming opulent bathrooms. Instead we will take a regular look at the often uncelebrated objects and designs that effect us because they have character, integrity and soul. Items that are beautifully simple, functionally perfect or stylistically unique. Safety pins, Tabasco sauce bottles, Lego, egg boxes, the Mini, zips, Post-It notes, Anglepoise lamps, Zippo lighters. Pyrex bowls, the Olivetti typewriter... Not just words, not just a random collection of items but a cultural vocabulary. Reference points. Design of enduring significance. These often unsung heroes from around our world tell us stories in their form, detail, nuance and material beauty. This is what makes them relevant, and to our minds makes them worth celebrating.

THAN RECEIVING Instead of putting a cover charge on the magazine we’re encouraging donations to a local charity each month if you feel the magazine has been a good read. A good guide is what you would have been willing to pay to buy the magazine. A small donation from everyone could make an enormous difference to a local charity. Our chosen charity this month is St Leonard’s Hospice, which has been caring for local people with life-threatening illness since 1985. Each year £2.8 million needs to come from donations, legacies, and fundraising so it’s a worthy cause in need of our help. Fairtrade ensures that producers in developing countries are paid a fair price
for the goods that they produce. This can save the producers from bankruptcy and homelessness and enables them to afford to send their children to school, buy medicines and contribute financially to community projects. www.fairtrade.org.uk

LAUREN’S TEA LOAF... A variation of this recipe was first trialled by my housemate, Laura; I was dubious at first I have to say, a cake made with tea? I think I’ll stick with my chocolate brownie thank you very much! However, as the house filled with the gorgeous aroma, I was hooked! Out the cake came and we dived in, melting butter into the slices straight from the tin (oh yes we are very refined in our house!). Although this cake is fabulous warm, straight from the oven, it keeps well in an airtight container for about a week (it probably keeps for longer, but they don’t tend to survive that long without being eaten). It does take a bit of forward planning but I think this just adds to the anticipation of the whole experience! Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS... 125g raisins 125g sultanas 125g dried apricots chopped (try to use fair-trade fruit; it leaves a much sweeter taste in the mouth, both literally and figuratively!) 1 small pot of tea (about 300ml) 125g margarine 350g wholemeal self raising flour 50g brown sugar 1 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground cinnamon I egg
HOW TO MAKE YOUR FAIRTRADE TEA LOAF... • Soak all the fruit together in the tea overnight (overnight is better but if you can’t wait, anytime over two hours will do) • When the fruit is ready, grease a loaf tin with butter and line it with greaseproof paper (a tedious job but it will make your life so much easier later on when you are removing the cake from the tin. (Turn the oven on now to let it heat up, it should be at 180°C/ Gas mark 4. • Rub the margarine into the flour using your hands, washing your hands before and after. I have found that to answer the phone with floury fingers is difficult- and it makes a real mess of your phone! • Stir in the sugar, ginger, cinnamon, fruit and any remaining tea. Make sure the flour is fully mixed in and none of it is left dry. • Add the beaten egg to bind the mixture together. • Spoon the mixture into the loaf tin press it down so that the top is flat. • Bake in your pre-heated oven for about an hour. The cake should be golden brown and a knife placed into the centre should come out clean (if it comes out covered in cake mixture then just put it back in the oven for another ten minutes or so, keep doing the knife test until it comes out clean.) • Serve warm or cold, with or without butter... This really is a cake for everyone’s taste. Love from Lauren Dent McShane at Monty’s Cucina, 1-3 Monkgate, York

Already, we are building up a harmonious relationship with Khaoz Media. They recently helped us film some video interviews around the city, which you can see at www.loveyork.org Local people and business owners tell us what makes them smile, and why they think it’s important to choose Fairtrade. We especially recommend you check out the two energetic buskers we filmed performing a funky version of Outkast’s “Hey Ya” outside the Minster, Adam on guitar and Robin on ukulele. Right now, some of the Khaoz team are involved as partners in a project allowing the city’s residents to find out more about how to create their own media. Over the next month, Khaoz are helping to deliver a series of open workshops, which anyone can drop into, on a range of media topics such as blogging, filming, TV broadcasting, podcasting, photography and more. We’ll tell you more about the exciting goings on in the next issue of Live&Love, by which time the centerpiece of the project, a new open-access community media hub, should be open in the newly renovated York Central Library.

Instead of putting a cover charge on the magazine we’re encouraging donations to a local charity each month if you feel the magazine has been a good read. What’s more, the full amount raised goes to St Leonard’s - we won’t be touching a penny. www.justgiving.com/liveandloveyork www.stleonardshospice.org.uk WE’LL BE REPORTING BACK IN APRIL’S ISSUE
