WORLD-CLASS CONTEMPORARY ARTS FOR THE CAMPUS, THE CITY AND THE REGION
WELCOME Thanks to ongoing support from Lancaster University and Arts Council England, Live at LICA really hits its stride this autumn, in a diverse programme of world-class music, theatre, dance and visual art. In an increasingly interdisciplinary mix, dance legends the Featherstonehaughs present two beautiful pieces inspired by film and visual art; performance art star Franko B presents new visual and sculptural works in the gallery; and a DIY rock/punk/live art ‘gig’ marks the opening of a new exhibition exploring Lancaster University’s heady days as a major rock venue that once saw the likes of The Jam, The Damned, The Undertones and Dr Feelgood play the Great Hall. Our concert series goes from strength to strength with a varied season of classical, world music and jazz, representing a programme of outstanding quality and integrity.
Watch out for highlights from Martin Roscoe, Schubert Ensemble and Chroma. We are also delighted to announce that from Autumn 2011 Lancashire Sinfonietta will be our Orchestra in Residence, developing an exciting range of activity on campus and across the region. We really hope you find something to tempt and inspire you, and follow some of the forking paths across the programme. Finally, if you are new to Lancaster (or even a bit tired of it), we highly recommend Proto-type Theater’s pervasive media meditation on the city – taking place online, on your phone and on the streets, something beautiful and unexpected is coming to Lancaster.

ORCHESTRA IN RESIDENCE
In September 2011, Live at LICA and Lancaster University becomes host to its first "Orchestra in Residence" - the Lancashire Sinfonietta. The Sinfonietta is Lancashire's professional orchestra and has a mission to take great music into local communities. It is one of the most unique chamber orchestras in the UK and features stars alongside emerging talent of the classical music world. The orchestra was established 16 years ago by Lancashire County Council and delivers an annual programme of quality concerts, outreach and education work in Lancashire.
Lancaster University will become a base for the orchestra to tour the region as well as creating exciting new opportunities on campus with students, university staff and the local population. This prestigious partnership will see Live at LICA and the Sinfonietta develop new work together and host the orchestra's annual Young Composer's Competition. EXHIBITIONS When you visit the gallery this Autumn you will find the uncanny, dark and otherworldly work of Franko B and Rachel Goodyear, both major artists featuring animals in their practice. The relationships in Goodyear’s images are inexplicable and enigmatic, the connections between humans and animals strange and unnerving. A similar dark sensation can be felt in Franko B’s installation of jet-black creatures, yet the unease is tinged with a romance and the potential of new life. The second exhibition Was I there? has its roots in rock music, punk and noise, although the focus is very much on fact and fabrication. Using the rich
gig history of the University’s Great Hall complex, within which the gallery sits, the exhibition uses a mixture of historical and contemporary footage, posters and other memorabilia to bring us into a world of powerful music and legendary performances. Falsehoods and forgeries continue in spring 2012 with a show of newly commissioned work. We’ll also be highlighting further new acquisitions and will be presenting a nationally touring photography show; but more about that later... For now we hope you enjoy the darkness and humour of our Autumn programme.

Public Opening, 6.30pm 20 October
Franko B is an instinctive and direct artist whose unique consideration of himself and what it is to be human is internationally recognised in a practice that spans performance, live art, installation and sculpture. In a display containing newly commissioned work, Peter Scott Gallery presents an installation that focuses on the fate of animals, who for Franko B “represent the balance of life”.
In this solo display of Rachel Goodyear’s recent work you will find two of the Peter Scott Gallery collection’s most recent acquisitions: cave that coughed and girl who strokes bees. Acquired through support from the Peter Scott Gallery Charitable Trust, they are outstanding examples of the mysterious nature of Goodyear’s work. In the exhibition you will find unlikely relationships and carefully constructed coincidences that are delicate in their nature and unsettling in their content. Drawing is the cornerstone of Goodyear’s practice and it can be seen throughout a display that was selected by the artist and includes a recent animation piece.
There is darkness in the work, a sense of gothic terror and romance, but also a sense of new purpose for the objects and animals on display they have been saved from demise and given a new lease of life. Furthermore the artist is present, prepared and presented like the
other exhibits. Franko draws a line between himself and these animals, and shares their vulnerability in being on display. After all, “What difference is there?” Franko B asks, for whom “humans are animals with an ego and Gucci glasses.”

THEATRE,DANCE & LIVE ART As ever, our performance programme includes major names that have influenced generations of artists, plus exciting new companies emerging onto the national scene. The season launches with a particular highlight: FORTNIGHT, Proto-type Theater’s two-week long piece originally commissioned by us and developed at Lancaster University’s Infolab, before going on to win a Sandbox Award at Bristol’s Pervasive Media Studio and a run at Bristol Old Vic. The piece returns to Lancaster in October and is a poetic meditation on the city, taking place online, on your phone and on the streets. You’ll never see Lancaster in the same way again.

Internationally acclaimed Anglo-Belgian performance company Reckless Sleepers bring their touring production of Schrödinger to Lancaster. In 1933 Erwin Schrödinger won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to quantum mechanics. He theorized a box in which a cat exists as living and dead at the same time. In 1998 Reckless Sleepers built that box – and now over a decade later, they are climbing back inside. In one of the company’s most celebrated performance pieces the impossible is probable, and truth and illusion are inseparable. Laws are made, bent and then broken. Schrödinger is a visually mesmerizing performance that sways between question and answer, chaos and order, what we can measure and what we cannot. To mark the opening of our new exhibition Was I There?, exploring the history and mythology of Lancaster University’s gig heyday, we present a double-bill performance ‘gig’ from contemporary artists exploring the iconography of rock, punk and noise. Action Hero
Juneau Brothers
Poised on the edge of catastrophe, Frontman is a furiously loud, raucous reproduction of the all the best gigs you never saw. With borrowed musings from iconic frontmen, the ghost of Elvis/Dolly/Kurt/Iggy is channelled by a girl in sequins. She turns up the volume, humps the speakers and tells the crowd she loves them.
Juneau Brothers’ performances examine relationships between musical performance, installation art and sculpture. They build their own hand-made electronic instruments, which, in conjunction with the bespoke software they utilise, form the backbone of their performances. In recent performances they have utilised multiple screen video projections comprised of sound-reactive animations that form both a backdrop and visual illustration of the music.
Action Hero enact a defiant, brazen, halfcut version of a faded comeback gig, complete with dry ice, lip-syncs and extreme noise. Balancing between euphoria and car crash, this is part-gig, part-performance with a DIY approach to analogue sound. www.actionhero.org.uk

Cheap Lecture is a translation of John Cage's Lecture On Nothing, presented as a rhythmic spoken performance set to music. In a rant about empty hands, audience, time, repetition and dancing, Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion reflect upon and continue the journey begun in their earlier trilogy of work, Both Sitting Duet (2002), The Quiet Dance (2005) and Speaking Dance (2006). The Cow Piece repeats the same structure. Using objects, text, movement and sound, it is a chaotic meditation upon dance, music and mortality. With philosophy and wit, the two artists reflect on their work, drawing us outwards into a series of unforeseen images and digressions. Cheap Lecture and The Cow Piece have so far been invited to 28 countries around the world, and Cheap Lecture was selected for the 2009 'best of the year' at Het Theaterfestival in Brussels. “There are few performers who can hold an audience captive like this double act... the timing of every note, shrug, laugh and gesture is awesome.
