PIC N’ MIX AND SAVE!
WELCOME Our Spring 2011 programme of world-class concerts, theatre, dance and exhibitions has something for everyone. Major highlights include Grand Union Orchestra, Candoco, Manchester Camerata and Upswing aerial theatre. Meanwhile the gallery hosts a group exhibition around ideas of time and memory, alongside the publication of a new book about our Making Time project and a national symposium. We are also very excited about our recent engagement with audiences, taking the cue from the Nuffield’s award–winning project that saw artists and local residents programme the theatre in 2008. Conversations with the Collection has enabled Lancaster University staff to select favourite works from our art collections, and the finale of our concert series features Valeriy Sokolov and Kathryn Stott performing a piece chosen by you, the audience.
We hope you find something of interest and, as ever, we encourage you to take a risk. Our staff and fantastic student ambassadors are always happy to recommend a starting point, especially if you are new to a particular art-form or venue.
Save money on every single ticket you purchase when you book online and select our 'Web Advance' tickets. All 'Web Advance' tickets are available via www.liveatlica.org until 4 hours before the published start time.

THE GREAT HALL STEINWAY CAMPAIGN
MAKINGTIME:A SYMPOSIUM What is Time? How do we mark time and how does it mark us? How might a performance last a whole year?
There's a good reason we're missing our piano recitals this season... our dear old piano has seen better days and needs to retire from public life. Steinway & Sons are helping us to launch an urgent campaign to replace this vitally important instrument as soon as possible. We are delighted that Lancaster University have pledged to match the funds raised, helping us reach our target in half the time. Special events will be taking place, with fascinating insights into this complex and beautiful piece of musical engineering. There are many ways you can get involved so please contact us to receive information about the campaign and how you can help to restore the King of Instruments to Lancaster University. For further details please email: fiona@liveatlica.org
Following the year-long Making Time performance commissioned by the Nuffield Theatre in 2009/10, we are hosting a symposium to explore more broadly the theme of time and duration in contemporary art practice, across artforms and critical perspectives. This interdisciplinary event brings together academic research, performance, live art, film, music, discussion and debate, reflecting on performance and documentation, duration, endurance, time and its passing. The symposium will include input from artists, academics and writers as well as non-arts perspectives addressing the wider human experience and perception of time. The Making Time commission artists, Jonathan Raisin and Elizabeth Willow, will also reflect on their experiences during the project.
The day culminates in an informal evening of music and performance. The themes of the symposium are also reflected in the concurrent Peter Scott Gallery exhibitions, Time Pieces and Gathering Time, which run during the symposium. OPEN CALL – we are currently seeking interest from artists, academics and writers whose work addresses notions of time, either in their research or in their art practice. If you are interested in proposing a response or more formal paper for this symposium, please contact us at: richard@liveatlica.org or call 01524 592229 Saturday 12 March 2011 11am - late £35/£25 (including evening performances and refreshments) Supported by the Centre for the Advanced Study of Contemporary Performance Practice (CASCPP).

EXHIBITIONS This year we have opened up exciting possibilities in the gallery by presenting newly-created exhibitions that have seen other people propose, submit and choose the work with us. We looked close to home for content and collaborators for the second instalment of Conversations with the Collection, which sees collections-based artworks selected by the staff of Lancaster University. We have then spread the net nationally for an exhibition focussing on time and its passing in the exhibition Time Pieces. You will also find two very different archives to explore, both with interesting links to the main gallery shows.
We are also pleased to announce that we have recently achieved the status of Full Accreditation, awarded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. This award is an acknowledgement of our commitment to our collection and the development of the Peter Scott Gallery as a great visitor experience.

Conversations with the Collection is a 3-year curatorial project designed to open up new perspectives on the collections of the Peter Scott Gallery, and to create unexpected exchanges.
The staff of Lancaster University Library Special Collections have created a display taken from the Jack Hylton Archive to run alongside the exhibition in the main gallery. The Hylton Archive contains memorabilia from the life and work of the successful band-leader who set trends within popular music.
Gathering Time is an archive of the Nuffield Theatre’s yearlong performance project, the Making Time garden.
Year 1 saw local artists choose their favourite works and pair them with pieces from elsewhere. In this second instalment, we are delighted to be working with a group of individuals who contribute to the daily life of the gallery. All those selecting the works in this exhibition are Lancaster University staff who support the gallery in a range of ways to ensure its ongoing success.
The Lancaster University Library Special Collections also holds material relating to the Peter Scott Gallery's Royal Lancastrian Ceramics collection. Keep an eye out for the link between the ‘conversation’ created by Helen Clish, Curator of Special Collections, and the display in the Manton Room.
Inspired by Live at LICA’s recent explorations of time and duration, Time Pieces is an interdisciplinary group exhibition that will showcase artists’ responses to time. We have looked across disciplines to explore notions of time, duration, history and memory. As well as our own investigations, this exhibition has been based on a nationwide response to a call for artworks responding to this theme.
Participants, who come from all areas of University life, took the opportunity to select from across our collections and partner works with another object or artwork of their choosing. You will be able to discover the ideas, connections and stories behind the partnerships on display in this unique exhibition.
Courtesy of the Jack Hylton Archive at Lancaster University
Time Pieces will coincide with a display of the Gathering Time archive, the publication of an artists’ book, and the Making Time symposium (see page 5) that all explore issues relating to the subject of time in art. The archive, symposium and exhibition have been curated by Live at LICA in collaboration with artists Elizabeth Willow and Jonathan Raisin, with additional support from the Centre for the Advanced Study of Contemporary Performance Practice (CASCPP).
A collection of words, sounds and images sit alongside implements, botanical specimens and excavated treasures, and together represent the accumulated findings of a year spent creating a garden.

Rainer Hersch is a multi-talented comedian and musician who is equally at home at London’s famous Comedy Store or conducting the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He turns his comic skills on those awkward questions: “Why is organ music so boring?”; “How can I play a musical instrument without practising?"; “What do conductors actually do?”. ACME has been turned into two series for the BBC and Hersch is a graduate of Lancaster University. This is a comedy show with an edge for anyone who enjoys music.

THEATRE & DANCE Spring 2011 sees our theme of crossing divides continued in a programme of stunning new performances existing on the borders and blurred edges of many art-forms. From the aerial circus theatre of Upswing to the performance art comedy of Bryony Kimmings, the hip-hop theatre of Benji Reid to the live music punctuating shows from Clod Ensemble and Yael Flexer, this is work that challenges, surprises and delights.
These critically acclaimed shows all explore performance that is shifting, changing and mutating. However you define it – live art, devised theatre, contemporary dance, performance art – this is great new work from internationally renowned artists. You saw it here first.
Guardian Insider’s Guide to the Arts, October 2010: Nuffield Theatre tipped as the place in England to see the most innovative new theatre.

A funny and honest account of female sexuality in the 21st century for anyone who’s had a one-night stand and liked it, or broken hearts in the search for true love.
Taking inspiration from Tobe Hooper, Chuck Palahniuk and David Lynch, Drunken Chorus descend into a dark and disturbing world of fear and violence. Combining short glimpses of horror, the performance explores the role of rhythm and structure in the creation of suspense.

Led by Artistic Director Vicki Amedume, Upswing have swung and spun their way through a stunning array of multi-disciplinary performances: from old skool hip-hop, through African mythology and Kenyan acrobatics, to an Olympic descent of Nelson's column that sent a silk banner cascading down this familiar monument. The aerial and circus world of Upswing is poignant, unpredictable and eloquent. Weaving dance, aerial, circus and animation with African spirituality and a modern narrative, Fallen creates a dynamic and poetic portrait of love, loss and the resilience of the human spirit. It asks what it means to be a woman and a mother caught in a place of transition as one culture meets another. Candoco Dance Company is the foremost UK contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled dancers. Created by world-class choreographers, their productions are a huge hit with audiences nationally and internationally and have proved extremely popular with Nuffield audiences.
Poet, breakdancer and hip-hop artist Benji Reid returns to the stage with an explosive new production from hip-hop theatre pioneers Breaking Cycles. Riding a rollercoaster to redemption, Benji performs a rich cocktail of guilt and fear, exploring the stark realism of substance abuse and fractured relationships.
Candoco present three varied new works that explore in one evening everything that dance can be. Visually striking, intensely physical, but with great theatrical humour, Renditions is spectacularly entertaining and full of artistic flair.
Quentin had it all, riding high as an ultra-successful trader on Wall Street. Betrayed and framed for fraud, he discovers life on the underbelly of New York, living on the streets. He sees that greed knows no limits and makes one last wager to save his soul.
This triple-bill is performed by seven disabled and non-disabled dancers, and choreographed by three internationally respected dance-makers: Wendy Houstoun, Emanuel Gat and Sarah Michelson.
The Devil Has Quentin’s Heart is a twisted, funky and perverse modern day tragedy told through performance, storytelling and dance. Devised and written by Benji Reid, Peader Kirk and Ray Shell.

This intimate ensemble dance piece is located in what appears to be the bare bones of a living room. The performers interfere with or assist each other’s ‘solo moments’ together inhabiting an imagined domestic space. The work cuts fast paced choreography with live cello, informal banter and wry humour.
In collaboration with the celebrated Clod Ensemble, legendary New York performance artist Peggy Shaw takes the audience on a journey across the landscape of her own body. Renowned for her gender bending autobiographical work, Shaw recounts her extraordinary experiences of the medical profession from her current perspective as a 65year-old lesbian grandmother. MUST weaves together the stories of a lifetime - giving birth on the way to Woodstock, her mother’s electric shock treatment in 1950s America, the loss of a loved one – with projected microscopic images, and live musicians performing a powerful score for piano, double bass and violin.
Yael's work is well known to Nuffield audiences from her recent piece Consequences for Ludus Dance. Primarily concerned with interaction, connecting with an audience on a human and visceral level, her work has a subtlety that is apparent in the movement choices, humour and dialogue. Made by an internationally renowned team of collaborators: award-winning choreographer, Yael Flexer; lighting designer Michael Mannion; dramaturg Gary Stevens; music by Nye Parry and cellist Karni Postel.
