Our learning and participation programme has something for everyone: whether you are a first timer, an interested audience member, a student or a professional artist, there is plenty to choose from. Join in with a wide spectrum of Live at LICA’s activities and you can learn everything from how to conduct an orchestra to aerial circus theatre. These events offer a chance to meet our artists, share ideas and enjoy a deeper insight into the arts on campus. All sessions are delivered by respected professional artists. THEATRE & DANCE WORKSHOPS Ludus Dance Touring Company 18 October, 10am-1pm. Ludus Dance, Assembly Rooms, King Street, Lancaster, LA1 1RE Join professional dancers from Ludus Dance Touring Company for a three-hour professional masterclass. Based on the theme of Ludus’ new triple-bill, Consequences, you will gain an insight into the different choreographic approaches of Nigel Charnock, Yael Flexer and Ben Wright. Standard Tickets: £11 / £8 concessions Ludus Dance Touring Company 19 October, 10am-12pm. Nuffield Theatre Love dance? Come along to this fun open class led by professional dancers from Ludus. Get started with an energetic warm-up followed by a mix of improvisation and taught sequences from their new show Consequences. Enjoy insights into three different performance styles. Expect great music, movement guaranteed to make you smile, and a witty exploration of cause and effect. No dance experience necessary. *Max 20 participants Web Advance Tickets: £10 / £7 concessions. Standard Tickets: £11 / £8 concessions Inspector Sands 23 October, 10am-12.30pm. Nuffield Theatre Inspector Sands make work through improvisation and collaboration in an ensemble. The company is fascinated by the emotional dramas lurking under the surface of everyday events, and this workshop will explore these tensions. Through a series of games, exercises and improv, participants will mine the absurd, the hilarious, the tragic and the banal that we all carry with us. The Great Hall Ockham’s Razor is an award-winning aerial theatre company that specialise in creating physical theatre on original aerial equipment. Join their masterclass and explore some of the devices designed for their new show, The Mill: try turning in the wheel, walking on a cable drum and performing on 100m of rope. A rare opportunity to meet this extraordinary company, and test out some of their unique processes. No circus experience necessary. *Max 15 participants Web Advance Tickets: £10 / £7 concessions. Standard Tickets: £11 / £8 concessions Theatre / Dance Talks and post-show discussions In addition to our workshops and masterclasses, many of the companies visiting the Nuffield Theatre, including Forced Entertainment, Levantes Dance and Candoco, regularly provide professionally-chaired post-show discussions that explore in detail the processes, research and rehearsal methods behind the company’s work. MUSIC MASTERCLASSES AND LECTURES Central European Roots with Bardolino 11 November, 1.10-2pm. The Great Hall Virtuosic Czech ensemble Bardolino are all classical artists in their own right. By exploring their central European heritage they have uncovered links between folk and classical music. They have created a musical language uniquely theirs, inspired as the great composers Janacek, Kodaly and Bartok were, to keep the spirit of their musical roots alive through the creation of new music. The session will be led by former leader of the Skampa Quartet, violinist Pavel Fischer. Tickets: £2 Composition Masterclass with Duncan Ward, Lancashire Sinfonietta 18 November, 1.10-2pm. Jack Hylton Room Duncan Ward is the 2010 winner of the Christopher Brooks Memorial Prize and Young Composer in Residence to the Lancashire Sinfonietta. He established a charity for training young musicians in Kerala, South India and this session will share a Video Conference between Lancaster and India, hosted by CLEO.net.uk He discusses his new work “Hotpot” which will be premiered in the evening concert. How does a composer turn a commission into inspiration? What are the guiding principals of a composer in the 21st century - does new music really have anything original left to say and can it still engage audiences? Tickets: £2 Conducting Masterclass with Nicholas Kok, Psappha 25 November, 1.10-2pm. Jack Hylton Room Nicholas Kok is the Principal Conductor of Psappha and works with the likes of English National Opera, BBC Singers, Scottish Ballet and Staatstheater Stuttgart. He has a distinguished career as a conductor and has built up a very wide repertoire, ranging through opera, ballet and symphonic music through to jazz improvisation and complex contemporary music. He will deliver a masterclass which discusses the challenges of conducting and rehearsing certain works in Psappha’s evening programme and give a short introduction in teaching the basics of a good conducting technique. MUSIC PROJECTS FOR PRIMARIES Nutcracker Miniatures November School Workshops 6 December Performance, 11am & 1.30pm. Nuffield Theatre An exciting cross-art and cross-curricular project with primary schools, based on the magical story of The Nutcracker. This new production is interactive and fun, devised specially to enhance children’s learning at Key Stage 1. Performances are suitable for families with children 4-6 years. ART GALLERY INSIGHTS A chance to hear more about the work in the Peter Scott Gallery exhibitions programme from the artists themselves in our ongoing series of free informal talks aimed at anyone with an interest in visual art, film or digital art. Introduction to “Pretty Eyed Pirate Smile” by artist Ellie Rees 21 October, 1pm. B17 Bowland Annex, Lancaster University (First floor above the art studios.) Ellie Rees creates carefully constructed performances which employ humour and irony to investigate what it means to be a woman and an artist. Rees’ work both plays with and questions the nature of performance, particularly looking at the difference between live and recorded spectacle. FREE Introduction to “Kanku Raga” and “Dance Like Your Dad”, films by artist Hetain Patel 4 November, 6.30pm Peter Scott Art Gallery Hetain Patel’s films look at communication, rhythm and movement. In the two films Kanku Raga and To Dance Like Your Dad, Patel takes particular influence from Tabla and inheritance versus imitation. FREE

By Car Leave the M6 motorway at junction 33 and take the A6 north towards Lancaster. Turn right at the third set of traffic lights on the A6 into the University main drive. Take the first exit left from the roundabout at the top of the main drive and follow signs for the Nuffield Theatre, Peter Scott Gallery or Great Hall.

By Train There are direct rail links between Lancasterr and London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford and major cities in Scotland. The X1 bus service runs between the Railway Station and the University every 20 minutes Mon - Sat daytimes and hourly on Sunday afternoons and evenings. Taxis are also available from outside the station. Lancaster Railway Station is a 5 minute walk away from the city centre.
