The best time of the year is finally here – the weather is cooler, people are friendlier and the holiday spirit is in full swing.

As you spend the last two weeks of the year attending various parties and events you must always remember to be thankful for everything that life has given us. This is the time of year to put away the smartphones and laptops and enjoy the moment with our closest family and friends. I encourage everyone to keep in mind those that are less fortunate, and remember that this is the season for GIVING, as well as receiving. Please try and donate even a few hours of volunteer work towards a local charity or if you are short on time try to give a monetary gift towards a good cause.

This month’s cover features Adriana Cataño, a hostess and actress who has experienced success both on screen and behind the scenes in the entertainment world. We spoke with her about her past, how she overcame bullying, her future projects and her seminars benefiting the youth. We also have great articles about how to maintain your figure during the holidays, a new type of breast implant and nutrition tips among others. Finally, wishing you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year! Don’t forget to smile- this month is all about being happy and enjoying time with your loved ones! Blessings!!!

Education

The importance of

A

parent’s attitude towards language learning is crucial to a child’s success. Learning a second language and becoming completely fluent has a great amount of value in this changing, complex world. Decades of research show that learning a second language helps a child become a better thinker as well as give him/her an advantage in the workforce. It also suggests that children who learn more than one language fluently earn broad cognitive benefits. Not only do they do better in other subjects like reading and science, but they also score higher on standardized tests and exhibit better problem-solving and spatial abilities. Don’t delay. Start early. Studies also show that the earlier a child is exposed to a second language, the greater the likelihood he or she will gain proficiency. Here are some tips for helping your child succeed in learning and mastering a second (or even third!) language: • Help your child make time to practice. Learning a language is like learning to play an instrument or sport. There needs to be time to practice. • Have your student teach you to say something in the foreign language every day. Explaining and teaching is learning. Let your child laugh at your mangled pronunciation – and correct you. • Find cultural events connected to the language and culture being studied. This is so important. When children develop a personal connection with the language, they enjoy learning it. It starts to have a purpose. Take your child to a restaurant that serves the food from the country of origin of the foreign language that your child is learning. For example, at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, students have a choice of two tracks: Spanish or Portuguese. Students in the Spanish program follow the curriculum from Spain. Soon, on Main Street in Downtown Doral, Bulla, a Spanish restaurant serving typical food from Spain, will be opening. Our students will be able to visit the restaurant with their teachers through educational field trip experiences. Students will experience a hands on demonstration of how the food is prepared. DDCES families will also be able to enjoy the restaurant and the children will be able to show off their knowledge of Spanish food to their families. This is a way of making knowledge come to life and making the connection between language, culture and tradition a true live entity. • Provide videos, books and music in the language. Ask the teacher for recommendations. This enhances the child’s exposure to the foreign language.

• Volunteer at the school for activities that enhance and promote the foreign languages. Participating and becoming a part of your child’s educational experiences assists the student in his/her growth of the foreign language. For example, at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, Hispanic Heritage Month and Brazilian Heritage are celebrated with many cultural activities. Food festivals, artistic showcases, music festivals, dance shows and many more are a part of these celebrations. When parents participate, students feel a sense of pride to see that their parents are a part of it. After school, they can discuss the activities that they participated in and since the parent witnessed it, the parent can also comment and add his/her own comments. • Travel. Plan family vacations to the language speaking country of study. Your child will become the family spokesperson and will be extremely proud to showcase his/her knowledge of the foreign language. It will also give your child the opportunity to experience and fully immerse him/herself in the cultural aspects of the language. For example, at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, children learn about the famous Copacabana sidewalk in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Visiting this location would bring the educational knowledge to life. • Be a supporter. Ask your elementary school about the plans for providing continuous language learning at the middle or high school level. Becoming fully bilingual is the key. That is the factor which sets apart applicants when applying for a job opportunity. It’s not the same to say “I understand another language” as it is to say “I am fully bilingual. I can read, write, and speak the foreign language correctly.” • Be patient and enthusiastic. Raising multilingual children requires patience and enthusiasm. It’s a long term commitment and there will be ups and downs. But remember, that happens to the parents of monolingual children too. Don’t worry if your child doesn’t speak his multiple languages as quickly or as adeptly as his peers. Instead focus on his successes and marvel at the development of his brain with enthusiasm. Always praise, praise, and praise some more! Know that when your child says, “I want a hug” in the foreign language, you’ll almost cry with pride. At that moment, it will not matter that it took some extra effort or that you had to wait a bit for the result. Palmetto General Hospital Unveils New Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory The Heart Institute at Palmetto General Hospital is proud to offer its patients and the community a new cardiac catheterization laboratory that will help treat and prevent a wide range of cardiac conditions.

Cardiac catheterization involves threading a long, thin flexible tube through an artery or vein, usually in the arm or upper thigh, to the heart. This procedure may be performed to help diagnose or evaluate coronary artery disease, congenital heart defects or heart valve problems, and can also help identify causes of heart failure or cardiomyopathy.

the risk of developing heart disease.

“The team at our Heart Institute is dedicated to implementing the most upto-date treatment options to address the community’s heart problems,” said Ana Mederos, CEO at Palmetto General Hospital. “Under the direction of interventional cardiologist, Dr. Jose Marquez, I am confident that we will be able to continue making advancements in cardiac treatment.” Additional procedures that can be performed in conjunction with cardiac catheterization include repairing certain kinds of heart defects or stuck heart valves, or opening blocked arteries in the heart. Cardiac catheterizations are performed frequently and rarely cause serious problems or complications. The benefits of a cath lab, and particularly one that’s located in the hospital, is that it can allow doctors to prevent a heart attack, or even stop one in progress. This can help save the heart muscles from further damage.

Exercise. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week.

Control weight. Excess body fat, especially around the waist, can increase

• Check for diabetes. Blood sugar levels should be monitored regularly, especially if there is a history of diabetes in the family.

Eat a healthy diet. Food can affect cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure and weight. The Heart Institute at Palmetto General Hospital offers a comprehensive multi-specialty program devoted to heart and vascular health that addresses each patient’s particular needs. The dedicated team of nurses and physicians work constantly to provide access to some of the latest cardiac treatments with board certified healthcare professionals specially trained to perform innovative valve procedures. In addition to complex surgical interventions, The Heart Institute at Palmetto General Hospital also offers preventative screenings services.

Some risk factors for developing heart disease cannot be changed, such as race or age. But others – including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking and obesity – can be prevented and controlled. The following lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk of developing heart disease:

• Don’t smoke. Smoking one pack of cigarettes a day can more than double

the chances of having a heart attack compared to people who have never smoked.

• Manage cholesterol. Aim for a total cholesterol of less than 200 mg/dL and triglycerides less than 150 mg/dL.

Control high blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure can increase the workload on the heart, making it thicker and not work properly.

Left to right: Vilma Medio, director of marketing; Yvonne Odette, director of business development; Ana Mederos, CEO;Dr. Jose Marquez, medical director of the cardiac catheterization lab; Dayami Rodriguez, director of the cardiac catheterization lab; Dr. Victor Pazos, intervenional cardiologist.

WHAT IS YOUR PERFECT CAR? B y Daniel Lares

Here are four questions you need to ask yourself to find out the car that best suits you. With Christmas already around the corner we thought you’d want to make sure you know what to put on your list for Santa Claus. 1. What is the most important thing about a car?

3. How many people will ride with you on a regular basis?

The answer to this is very personal and it comes down to the main thing you should consider when buying your car and that is: what you like. Some of us love to have a flashy and super fast looking sport car, others like to see a jacked up truck with a big Diesel engine pulling a big boat and some people don’t even care what cars look like, they just need to go places and take their stuff with them. To help you out, here are some general answers that will help you determine your category: 1. Flash and style - do you want to draw attention to yourself or be inconspicuous? 2. Performance - do you prefer better gas mileage or the thrill of racing down the Dolphin Expressway on your way to Miami? 3. Safety - Volvo and Mercedes usually take the cake in this category 4. Towing capacity - If you have a boat you already know that you need something with Torque and power 5. Fuel efficiency - Keep in mind that even stated fuel efficiency numbers from the automakers will be hard to achieve. Always assume you will get 1-2 MPG less than stated. 6. Luxury - This is a must for many people in Miami 7. Space and comfort - Think of how many passengers you will carry around on a daily/weekly basis. 8. Price - perhaps the most important factor. The lower your interest rate the more car you can afford.

You may love that nice two-seater sports car but if you will be picking up your three children from school every day you may need more than one passenger seat. On the other hand if you are single, ride mostly by yourself and occasionally go out with two or three friends, then maybe you can get the two-seater and use it as an excuse to leave it at home when you go party with your friends. You also want to think about who rides with you regularly because whether you like it or not kids will inevitably spill something in your seats and grandma will complain about your uncomfortable car every time she gets in and out of the vehicle. If you are a family man/woman who will mostly use this car for commuting then maybe you can get something more sporty and keep your spouse’s car for the family weekend trips to the beach.

2. What will be the real use of the car? For this, it may be helpful to look back at the type of driving you did in the last three months and account for the driving you couldn’t do because your current car is not fitted for it. Realistically speaking, most of us can’t afford to buy a car for the weekday commute and a second car for the weekend fun (whether that means camping, racing or traveling with the family). Chances are you will be using the same car for all your needs so you have to quantify how much you will be using it to only go from point A to Point B versus the times you will be using it as a recreational vehicle.

16

LIVEDORALMAGAZINE.COM

DECEMBER 2015

4. What is your primary type of driving We live in a time when most car manufacturers are making their cars more and more fuel efficient everyday however we still have to keep an eye on our fuel consumption and it really divides into two types of driving; city and highway. Of course this leaves room for a third type which would obviously be a combination between city and highway. If you didn’t know, city driving (the kind with a lot of stop and go at: red lights, stop signs and heavy traffic) consumes a lot more gas than highway cruising. But don’t fool yourself, if you drive every morning through a heavily congested highway having to stop and go and barely getting up to 15 – 20 mph you are not really doing much highway driving. As we know the roads in South Florida have become more and more congested over the last few years making a highly fuel efficient car all the more necessary. Many cars these days offer V6 engines which can automatically cut power to 2 cylinders when cruising on the highway. This is a great combo as you still have that V6 power on tap but can take advantage of the better gas mileage when necessary.

The truth is that there are no limits for this beautiful woman who, with her great talent, has managed to position herself as one of the top presenters in the Hispanic television. It is worth mentioning that Adriana has lent her image and voice for countless brands, which are known nationwide and worldwide. Some examples of these brands are Rooms To Go, Pepsi, Gucci Perfume, Shiseido Cosmetics, Revlon, Colgate, Coca-Cola and L’Oreal among others. Cataño seeks to encourage young people who suffer from bullying because of their weight. This is because at the age of 16 she weighed 165 lbs. With much effort and dedication Adriana was able to lose over 50 pounds. -How was it for you live as an overweight kid in high school? For me it was difficult to live with being overweight because all of my friends were in shape and wore very cute clothes. Everything fit ugly on me, which made me feel sad. The boys who were older than me called me ‘fat’ or told me “you are cute, but it’s a shame that you are so chubby.” This motivated me to start doing exercise and eating better. In less than a year I lost 50 pounds and started my career as a model. Luckily I have always been sure of myself and bullying inspired me to lose weight. Unfortunately, there are young people who get very depressed by bullying and even commit suicide. In my seminars I speak a lot to my students about the subject, self-esteem, bullying and how to achieve their goals.

-How did you start in the entertainment industry? At age 16 after losing weight I went to a casting for Burdine’s / Macy’s and I was chosen to be the Department of junior’s catwalk model. Soon after, I started to work part-time in a magazine in my last year of high school and the art director asked me if I’d like to be a model. I replied yes, but informed him that I didn’t know anyone in the industry and did not have a modeling agency. He referred me to his best friend who was the owner of a talent agency. She sent me to my first casting that same week and I left with a television commercial. The rest is history. It was like a domino effect, casting parts kept rolling in and always at the perfect time. God’s timing is always perfect. -What are your beauty tips to keep you so radiant and beautiful? Since the age of 16 I’ve used sunblock every day, even if the day looks cloudy; it is part of my daily routine. I never tan my face. When I go to the beach I look like a crazy person. I tan my body but cover my face with a towel. I always drink a lot of water, sleep 8-9 hours and if I can, I nap for 45 minutes in the afternoon. I also love oxygen facials. Likewise, I think that having a positive attitude and always being grateful with God helps greatly to look young.

- What have been the challenges in raising a daughter as a single mother? It has been difficult to maintain a balance between being the strict mother and being her friend. When there is not a father figure at home the mother has to take on a double role. This means that you have to have patience, read many books on how to raise children and be an emotionally stable person. Thank God I’ve always been a centered and balanced person. My daughter has many father figures in her life, but not on a daily basis. I feel very grateful and blessed by God because I have a great family that has helped me raise my daughter. Gaby has always been surrounded by lots of stability and love. -Tell us about a bit more about the seminars you have been offering. I’m happy with the 10 seminars that I have taught since 2012. Several of my students are already working as reporters, models and also have made independent films. I guide and provide them with all the steps to follow and succeed in this difficult race. I explain to them how to get an agent, help them to decide whether they want to be models, tv presenters, announcers or actors. I have a wonderful team for my seminar. The next workshop will be in January 2016 here in Miami. 23

Are “gummy bear” breast implants better?

Anatomically shaped silicone implants that are designed to give you a more natural look

1. Why are they called gummy bear implants? Since the invention of silicone implants, technology has now given us the “gummy bear” implants. This is the more popular term for the new generation of silicone implants or form stable implants, classified as 5th generation by the FDA. This term was coined by a plastic surgeon to describe the cohesiveness of the silicone gel in the implant. If you were to cut into the gel implant, it would not lose its shape or leak out. Essentially making it “leak proof ”. By having this stable form or “tear drop” shape, the implants can provide a more natural appearance to the breast. 2. What is the major difference between traditional silicone and “gummy bear” breast implant? The gummy bear implant is different than the previous silicone implant, or 4th generation, because the silicone gel in the gummy bear implant is thicker and will stay true to form with no ripple/wrinkling effect. Gummy bear implants currently available in the US are anatomically shaped rather than round. They have more projection at the bottom and are tapered towards the top giving a tear drop appearance. Placement of gummy bear implants requires a slightly longer incision in the skin. In addition implant cost is approximately $1,000 higher than traditional silicone gel. 3. What are the advantages of using gummy bear implants as opposed to saline or other silicone? The advantage of using form stable implants is that they have a more natural, anatomic shape to them. Also, they will maintain their shape for a longer period of time since they are less likely to collapse and produce folds or rippling.

24

LIVEDORALMAGAZINE.COM

In addition, they are not likely to leak and rarely rupture. Lastly, the gummy bear implant has the lowest rate of capsular contracture of all implants on the market. 4. When did Pierini Esthetic begin incorporating gummy bear implants in addition to saline or silicone gel? In our practice here at Pierini Esthetic, this additional form of stable implants has been adopted within the past year. We carefully select the right patient/candidate for this type of implant based on each patient’s aesthetic preference and/or body type. For those who desire a more natural look, this implant is an ideal option. We provide complimentary evaluations by our experienced plastic surgeons in both our Doral and Broward offices. 5. What is the life span of the “gummy bear” implants?

Ronald Espinoza, DO Ronald Espinoza, DO, is a highly experienced physician who comes to Pierini Esthetic Surgery and Pierini: A Solution For Beauty from New York City, Bronx, Westchester, and Nassau County Long Island, New York. He has over 10 years experience in General, Cosmetic, Reconstructive, Microvascular, Hand and Replant Surgeries. Dr. Espinoza holds a medical degree from the New York School of Osteopathic Medicine. He continued his medical education as an Intern at Nassau University Hospital, followed up a surgical residency program at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, New York, where he continued his Cosmetic, Plastic & Reconstructive training as a Chief Resident and Fellow.

The gummy bear implants carry a lifetime warranty. They do not need to be replaced every 1015 years as previously recommended for other silicone implants in the past, unless, a particular situation arises. If you don’t encounter any issues you can maintain the same implants for your entire lifetime with the appropriate radiological monitoring (ultrasound, mammogram and / or MRI). In reality, the lifespan of breast implants depends on the individual’s wear and tear of the implant. In addition some women choose to change to smaller or larger size of implant during the course of their lifetimes.

La Carne por si misma

NO va a causarte CÁNCER.

D

Salud!

Staying FIT During the holidays

I LOVE the holiday’s. It’s a time to thank God for our blessings and who

doesn’t enjoy the gifts, parties, holiday vacation, and spending time with their family and friends and most of all the food. Don’t we all love smelling the aroma of the festive foods cooking as we spend time with friends and family. Tis’ the season to be jolly, but, you don’t want to put on the extra holiday weight to look like Santa Clause. The holiday season is a time to rejoice with your family, friends and co-workers. Yet, we tend to do a little too much celebrating and eating. We don’t just have a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal...we have numerous festivities at work, school, parties and extra curriculum activities, so we claim that we have little or no time to workout. The truth is that you can go through the holiday season without gaining weight, or at least consciously minimizing the amount of weight you gain. Between Halloween, October 31 and January 1, New Years, the average American will gain 5 to 10 pounds. Do you know that the average person consumed between 2,500 to 3,000 calories and over 140 grams of fat in their Christmas meal. That’s excluding breakfast, lunch and snacks. Those statistics are for the average American Christmas meal. You know turkey with stuffing, mash potato with gravy, rolls, corn and pumpkin pie. I’m sure that a traditional hispanic Christmas meal the caloric intake is way higher considering that we eat roasted pork, rice and beans, chicharron, and turon. How about those delicious desserts, flan, tres leche, or rice pudding to name a few. What if I tell you that I eat all of my favorite foods for the holiday meals, parties and on vacation and I do not gain any weight. I eat healthy 6 days a week. I do strength training 5 times a week. I stretch and train in martial arts. When the holidays come I will eat all I want at the festivities, yet I’ll go back to my regular eating habit the next day. I will not miss a workout. Actually, I make it a point to workout more during the holidays. I also take vacation for the Christmas holidays and I don’t eat as healthy as usual. The first thing I do when I go on vacation is find a gym to train at. I truly enjoy workout while on vacation. I’ve jogged in the streets of Cartagena, Columbia, North Carolina and in Manhattan. I’ve rode bicycles in Central Park NY and in Europe. I’ve hiked through mountains in in Colorado and North Carolina. I’ve zip lined in Jamaica.

5 Strategies to Combat Holiday Weight Gain 1. Workout, Workout and Workout

Continue your fitness workout during the holidays. If you are not working out start today! If you are working out workout extra hard and be consistent to burn those extra calories.

2. Eat Healthy Foods Before the Feast

Fill up with fruits, protein and other healthy foods. You’ll be fuller and less inclined to over eat.

3. Drink Lots of Water

Drink water before, during and after the holiday meal. This will help you stay fuller. Research has shown that drinking a full glass of water 30 minutes before a meal helps improve digestion and helps to limit the amount of food you eat.

4. Walk After Your Meal

45 minutes after that large meal it would be a great idea to take a nice walk outside and enjoy the cool weather. This is the ideal way to help us properly digest and burn off those calories from our Christmas and Hanukkah meals.

5. Workout with Intensity for Maximum Results

To see results you must workout with intensity. Forget long cardio training. Start sprinting and strength training. The more muscles you have the faster your metabolism will get. Remember muscle helps to burn fat Have a great Hanukah, Christmas and New Year by staying fit this holiday season.
