Queridos familiares y amigos del Doral,

Dear family and friends of Doral, Happy Year 2017! With great joy, I present you our first issue of the new year! I want to thank all of our readers and the community of Doral as we wrap up another year publishing Live Doral Magazine. The last few years have brought significant growth and change to Doral. We have seen the construction of several retail, residential and commercial projects. All of us have experienced firsthand the traffic issues that a growing community such as ours encounters. 2017 will finally be the year when we can all start to enjoy the new amenities and attractions that our city now offers. With the construction of Downtown Doral, the soon to be open City Place Doral, Midtown Doral and Doral Legacy Park we have the qualities that will eventually make Doral a star city not only in South Florida, but across the entire state. New schools have also opened, new roads have been constructed and new jobs have been created all the while thousands of new residents have moved to Doral. 2017 also brings a change in the local political scene. We want to sincerely thank Mr. Luigi Boria for the tireless and wonderful work he has done to promote the City of Doral. His entrepreneurial instincts have worked to help the city grow and achieve the position it has today. We also want to extend a warm welcome to our new (again!) Mayor, Mr. Juan Carlos Bermudez as he takes on the position of the leader of Doral. We are certain that Doral has a bright future and we as local residents are proud to serve the city and enjoy the growth : ) Blessings

Quiero agradecer a todos nuestros lectores y a la comunidad de Doral por todo el apoyo que nos han dado a través de los años para que sigamos imprimiendo Live Doral Magazine. Los últimos años han traído un crecimiento y un cambio significativo a Doral. Hemos visto la construcción de varios proyectos comerciales, residenciales y comerciales. Todos nosotros hemos vivido los problemas de tráfico que una comunidad creciente como la nuestra tropieza. HEART ATTACK WARNING Signs for Women Heart attack symptoms displayed by men and women are considerably different. When a woman has a heart attack she may experience nausea, overwhelming fatigue and dizziness. Her warning signs of an impending heart attack could include shortness of breath, vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Because these symptoms are often chalked up to stress, women have reported that they have a harder time getting their doctors to recognize these early warning signs. Women also wait longer before seeking medical care. With a heart attack, minutes matter. Seeking help sooner and being proactive about your care can help save heart muscle.

El porqué de mi oficio es un vestido que llevo puesto, es el color del cielo, es el tráfico en la calle, la noticia, mi historia... No hay duda del abrazo de Rafael Muci a la calidez del bossanova, ritmo armónico y colorido saturado de saudade, esa dulce nostalgia de recuerdos gravitando una y otra vez en la memoria, marcando el compás creativo. Artista visual, utiliza la pintura y el dibujo incorporados a la fotografía, así como la manipulación digital, para distorsionar la imagen y crear nuevas texturas y dimensiones. El color y la saturación alineados con emociones subconscientes, permiten distintos niveles de resonancia y vibración en el discurso óptico. El resultado es un producto de alto contenido gráfico y poético. “Pintar es un proceso visceral, constante más no instantáneo. Una manera de vivir el mundo y expresarlo sin verbo ni palabra. El porqué pinto se resume, quizá, en ¿por qué existo?” Cuando trabaja en una impresión, utiliza la técnica de “impresión gráfica de museo con calidad de archivo”, estampa de alto

lustro, con protección UV, que por lo general fija a una lámina de aluminio, resultando una imagen donde las sombras y las luces añaden profundidad al mensaje, mientras el aluminio le mantiene sobrio y elegante. Si la obra tiene connotaciones figurativas y es manipulada digitalmente, imprime en lienzos de algodón o lona, que posteriormente vuelve a intervenir. Para los dibujos y pinturas sobre papel o lienzo usa tintas indelebles y acrílicos. “Disfruto experimentando con materiales y substratos distintos. Descubrir nuevas texturas es descubrir nuevos vocablos plásticos”.

The Venetian Pool is an aquatic facility unlike any other in the country. It has been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, and is still one of the main tourist attractions for those visiting Miami and the City of Coral Gables. 18 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . he Venetian Pool is open to the public with an Italian village theme and serves as a relaxing alternative for those looking for water and sun away from the fast pace of South Beach. The pool was created in 1923 from a coral rock quarry, where much of the original coral rock was used to border and further accentuate the pool. It also features two large historic lookout towers, with a view to the City Beautiful. The 820,000 gallon pool is fed with spring water from an underground aquifer. Of course the aquifer is not the only feature that enhances a visitor’s experience...there are two waterfalls that provide a scenic backdrop as well as the cave-like grottos which provide a fun experience for swimmers. The Venetian Pool’s beauty is further accentuated by its loggias, porticos, palm trees and signature bridge. It truly is an unforgettable experience! The pool was opened in 1924 as the “Venetian Casino,” which was part of the Grand Plan George Merrick had for the City of Coral Gables. His vision for the city was to embody a sense of true hometown living. George Merrick envisioned creating a city with Mediterranean features such as grand entrances, plazas, and mediterranean style

homes. The limestone which was taken from the Venetian Pool quarry pit was used to create some of the original neighboring buildings. With the efforts of George Merrick, artist Denman Fink, and architect Phineas Paist, the pool was transformed into a paradise that today is included in the National Register of Historic Places, the only swimming pool to have such a designation. In its early days, the “Venetian Casino” was the destination for many celebrities, including such movie stars as Johnny Weismuller and Esther Williams. The pool was also a site for orchestrated concerts, in which the pool was emptied of its 820,000 gallons of water and the orchestra would perform on the pool bottom. Many years later in 2001, this scene was duplicated as a concert which was held on the bottom of the pool to commemorate the City of Coral Gables’ 75th Birthday. In 1989, the pool’s first historical renovation was completed. Between 2009 and 2010 the pool underwent a second renovation. However, the pool’s original rich history can still be observed as you walk through the entry fountain room and gaze upon its historic photographs, reminding patrons of an era long gone by.

La protección solar se logra evitando el sol, particularmente en horas en las que el sol está más fuerte (es decir, entre 10 am y 4 pm en verano y entre 9 am y 3 pm en invierno). Les recomendamos usar ropa que filtre los rayos ultravioleta (UV), y ponerse cremas o lociones protectoras solares con un mínimo de protección solar SPF de 50. Es importante recordar que los nuevos protectores también protegen contra los rayos UV tipo A además de los tipo B, pero es necesario estar vigilantes de que la etiqueta diga “Broad Spectrum”. ¿El protector solar se aplica solamente cuando uno sabe que va a estar en contacto con el sol? El protector solar debe aplicarse frecuentemente. Lo ideal es cada 2 horas, ya que los componentes se degradan en ese tiempo. En otras palabras, ponerse el protector solar solo en la mañana antes de salir de la casa no es suficiente. Todas estas recomendaciones también aplican para días nublados, ya que las nubes filtran parcialmente la luz visible y los rayos infra-rojos (que dan la sensación de calor), pero no filtran los rayos UV. It’s time for your first official sit-down of the school year with your child’s teacher. While it’s perfectly fine to go into the parent-teacher conference without a lot of advance preparation, you can make the very most of this discussion by thinking through what you’d like to talk about ahead of time.

he parent-teacher conference, after all, is arguably one of the most essential tools you have to guide your child in school. Be sure you collect as much information as possible in order to support your child’s success. The teacher will likely have a framework for your discussion that addresses the most important topics. However, be sure to write down your own list of questions as well. As a starting point, here are six questions that cover your child’s holistic school performance: 1. Is my child meeting grade-level expectations? Teachers have state standards against which they measure all students’ performance. Ask how your child is keeping up in class and if there are any areas that need attention.

2. Why did my child receive this grade? Grades on homework, class work and tests are the most obvious measurement of your child’s daily and weekly progress. Your child’s teacher can offer insight into the appropriate level of parental involvement and what you can do if your child is struggling. 5. What are my child’s strengths? Don’t forget that parent-teacher conferences are a time to uncover your child’s greatest assets in addition to areas of weakness. Perhaps your child has an outgoing personality and works well in teams. Maybe he or she is a strong public speaker. Talk about what your child is good at, as these areas could present opportunities for extracurricular activities and a possible major in college. 6. What is the best way for me to support my child at home? As a busy parent, it can feel overwhelming to stay on top of everything school related, but your child’s teacher will appreciate you expressing your desire to help. The teacher might have a few simple suggestions or top priorities to focus on at home that will make it easy for you to take action.

NO SALUDABA A LA AMANTE DEL REY DE FRANCIA EN LAS FIESTAS

n fin, el título largo de este artículo explica muy bien el tema del cual voy a escribir hoy. Sí, eso pasó. Primero y rápidamente déjenme explicarles que cuando María Antonieta, hija de la emperatriz de Austria y, por ende, miembro de la casa Habsburgo, se casa con Luis, futuro Luis XVI y nieto del rey de Francia del momento, Luis XV, de la casa Borbón, se crea una alianza entre estas dos casas reales. Eso fue un acontecimiento muy importante, pues estas dos casas reales eran las más poderosas de Europa y habían estado en disputa siempre, hasta que este matrimonio tuvo lugar. El rey Luis XV tenía amantes, que vivían en el Palacio de Versailles, junto con el resto de la corte, independientemente de que la reina aún no hubiera muerto. Cuenta la historia que la reina era una mujer muy religiosa, por lo que canalizó todo el dolor que podían producirle estas infidelidades en hacer obras de caridad. La última favorita del rey, que lo fue por años hasta el día de su muerte, fue la duquesa de Barry, que dormía tan solo a tres cuartos de él. En fin, las hijas del rey, con toda la razón, le tenían rabia a esta duquesa du Barry, por lo que le dijeron a María Antonieta, futura reina de Francia y, en ese momento, una inocente y juguetona adolescente de quince años, que no saludara a la duquesa en las fiestas o en las partidas de juego, en fin, nunca. María Antonieta, ingenua y austríaca, lo que significa que era “la nueva” en la corte francesa, obedeció sin entender la profundidad de su influenciada conducta, la cual no cambió en el transcurso de varios años.
