ACADEMIC GOAL SETTING
It’s never too early to teach your children about setting goals for themselves
A
s we approach 2016, how can parents help their children make academic goals for the New Year? Eat healthy. Exercise more. Get a promotion at work. We are all familiar with these common New Year’s resolutions that adults set every year. However, how about your children? Have they set any goals for the New Year? Creating resolutions is an important and powerful skill that we must teach our children. It helps children to have a greater sense of self confidence to last a lifetime. While young students may not be planning for college just yet, they can learn the importance of setting and achieving New Year goals with the ultimate aspiration of becoming a successful college student. The New Year is a great opportunity for families to discuss what the future holds and how we can plan for positive growth and change, together. Here are a few tips to help students set academic goals for the New Year: 1. Define the word “goal.” Make sure your child knows what the word “goal” means. Explain to your child that when an athlete or student creates a goal, it is the end result of their hard work. It is something you are trying to do or achieve. 2. Teach the importance of setting goals. Children need to know the “why”. Setting a goal will improve their confidence, help them make better decisions and give them motivation in life. Give your child an example of a goal that you set and the sacrifices that you had to make in order to achieve the goal. You can sacrifice something you like for a positive outcome. 3. Set realistic goals. Help your child to set small, achievable goals that can be accomplished quickly. This will help them understand the process. Then, once they grasp this concept, you can have them set more long range goals. Have your child point out which goals are most important. Goals should be measurable, achievable and specific. Some children may dream big, but maybe too big. If you know the goal is unachievable, instead of telling them they cannot do it, help them refine their goal into something you know they will be able to achieve. Become their biggest fan and motivator. 4. Develop a plan with your child. Once students have set their goals, develop the steps of action. If your child’s goal is to earn an A in their Spanish or Portuguese class, the first question they should ask themselves is “What are the steps I need to take in order to earn an A in this class?” Here’s an example: Step 1 – Do all my foreign language home learning assignments. Step 2 – Do all my foreign language technology assignments. Step 3 – Practice and study with a friend in a cooperative setting for all the assessments. Step 4 – Review the lesson with a family member. Step 5 – Always listen to the teacher in class and ask questions if I have a doubt. Step 6 – Concentrate and focus during the assessments.

5. Visually create the goal. A visual reminder is a great way to help students physically see what their goal is. It also becomes a motivator throughout the process. Your child can write down their steps on a chart and mark the steps as they accomplish them. A timeline should be designated visually, as well. This way the child can track their progress and stay focused on the plan and final goal. 6. Lead by example. It’s tempting to sit back and tell our kids what to do as parents. When it comes to resolutions, approach them as a team effort – and you are the captain. Stick to your goals and encourage them to do the same. Encouraging your family to adopt a team mentality to reach each individual’s goals is a great way to nurture familial unity while keeping everyone accountable. Set the example by following through on your commitments and they will too. 7. Have a monthly or weekly conference. Each month, have a check-in meeting to see how their goals are developing. At Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, students have monthly conferences with their teachers to discuss their progress and strategies. Making this part of your family routine would assist the child in remaining focused and loyal to the plan. Sometimes, adjustments must be made along the way. Conducting these conferences would assist in this process. Children tend to forget about their goal or get discouraged if they think that they may not be able to achieve it. This is an opportunity to help them get back on track. 8. Set up a reward. The incentive may be achieving the goal in itself, but for some goals a little something extra will make achieving that goal even better. As adults, if we set a goal to lose five pounds, we may treat ourselves to a special outing to celebrate our accomplishment. Set up a reward with the student that you both agree on. It should be something that will help them to continue to see the benefit of achieving their goals. 9. Celebrate as a family once a goal is achieved. Hooray! Your child has achieved his/ her goal! Now it’s time to celebrate. Nothing is more affirming to children than succeeding at goals they have worked hard to achieve. It is the tangible proof your child interprets as “I really did it!” and a great way to nurture your child’s self-esteem and confidence. Celebrate as a family. Photograph your child achieving his/her goal and frame it. Host a “Success Dinner” where you cook your child’s favorite meal and favorite dessert. Reflect and share what the triumphs and losses were during the process. It is the perfect way to spark intentional conversation and foster quality time with your children. Then, set some new goals and look forward to celebrating once again. Congratulations! Felicitaciones! Parabéns! The beauty about this is the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Workouts create an oxygen deficiency in the body and when that happens the body rebounds with EPOC. The trick here is just as the name implies, an end result of excess oxygen. Oxygen is key to letting the body burn fat just as it is to lighting fire. With a surplus of oxygen and need to recover from the workout the body scorches through fat and calories for 36 hours post workout. Yes you read correctly, the body will continue to work for you for the next three days from a single workout. So now the question is, are you ready to be motivated, feel energized, build confidence and self-esteem? Can you take direction, instruction and use your own results and hard work as a form of motivation? Orangetheory Fitness is not just a craze or phase; it is the real deal with real results to take your body to the next level. f your closet is full of clothes but you still find yourself saying “I have nothing to wear”? In that case, you definitely need to renew and refresh your wardrobe ASAP. With the beginning of the New Year, enhancing your wardrobe sounds like a great idea! You probably think you’ll have to spend a lot of money, but that’s totally false! You just need to start by doing some minor adjustment to what you already own and do some “smart shopping” Don’t worry if it sounds complicated, we’re here to help.
How to start? Start by cleaning your closet and asking yourself the following questions:
Shopping Tips
1. Before you go shopping, make you sure you actually buy things that fit your body and your lifestyle at the moment. Never invest your money on something you think you can wear when you finish your diet. Lets face it; sometimes we just don’t finish that diet. 2. Adding good pieces to your wardrobe takes time.
“Does this fit my personal style?” Never buy something you’re not 100% sure. As my mom always told me: “If you love it, take it! If you “When was the last time I wore it?” like it, don’t. You’ll find something better” And now, “Does it look old already?” that’s my first rule when shopping. “Am I really going to wear this?” Every California Closets system is custom designed specifically for you and the way you live. Visit our showroom or call today to arrange for a complimentary in-home design consultation. 3. Understand your budget. Just because
Remember, you just want to keep the pieces that you really wear and get rid off everything you don’t love anymore. 305.623.8282

What do you need? FL098_Doral_WI Detail_8.5x11_0915.indd 1
Meet the basics. This are pieces that all woman should have and the foundation for any good wardrobe: the little black dress, the white blouse, a solid color t-shirt, solid color turtle neck, a jacket, a neutral cardigan, at least two pair of good jeans, black pants, heels, boots, flats and a good quality black bag. Most of the time, a woman can mix & match these items to create outfits for any occasion without spending a lot of money to buy new clothes. Make sure you have these items in your wardrobe. To successfully “mix and match” your clothes, you just need to build a solid foundation of a few basic colors and then add the rest of the structure according to your style. An important tool for mixing and matching is the wise use of accessories like jewelry, handbags, shades, scarves and belts. The stamp of authenticity of a good wardrobe is its versatility, variety and adaptability. You don’t need to have a huge closet with tons of clothes to look always stylish; by using your creativity, common sense and a penchant for ‘mix and match’ when you buy your clothing.
4. If you want to buy a pricey item, get your money’s worth by investing in a classic shape and 9/22/15 11:25 AM color. This way you can get more than a season’s wear out of it. 5. Take advantage of “end of season” sales. Stores are practically giving things away at the end of each season to make room for the next season’s goods

SAMAR YORDE
@Soy Saludable

L
a Dra.

3

It is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle through a combination of good nutrition, emotional balance and physical activity. As a result of over five years of sustained efforts, this site has turned into one of the most active and influential health-related virtual communities in Latin America. Samar is also a writer. Her first book “Soy saludable en la cocina” (I am Healthy in the Kitchen), published in Venezuela, was a bestseller, with over 50,000 copies sold during its first six months of publication. She expects to achieve the same success with her second book “Soy Saludable: Transforma tu cuerpo y tu vida sin ansiedad ni obsesiones” (I am Healthy: Transform Your Body and Your Life Without Anxieties or Obsessions). How did the idea of @SoySaludable arise? A few years ago, through my personal experiences, I realized that the vicious cycles relating to anxiety, obesity and resulting illnesses can cause serious damage in people. As a woman, mother, physician and public administrator I began a transformational journey that included physical and emotional growth in order to feel liberated. Along the way, I discovered that through my experiences, set out as teaching tools with the help of my own career, I could help others. I could offer positive guidance to the millions of people overwhelmed by sedentary lifestyle habits, and influenced by promotional manipulation of their health. About five years ago, I transformed this passion into what has now become @SoySaludable, a communications and medical services platform that offers advice, scientific information and suggestions for physical activity. The aim was to help our followers achieve a healthy weight, long life and high levels of energy.

Interview
What do you consider most important in your life? I want to be happy, enjoy, love, give and share what I learn with others. What food items should a home never be without? Vegetables of all colors and fruits. Water, eggs, fish and seafood, oatmeal, almonds, sweet potatoes, chocolate and vanilla whey protein, cocoa powder, green tea, almond milk, Greek yogurt, among others. Share with us some of the characteristics that describe you. Happy, fun-loving, positive and authentic, spontaneous, brave, strong and resilient. I count my blessings and thank God every day of my life. We know that bullying is very prevalent these days, particularly for celebrities. How do you keep that from affecting your life? People that believe in themselves and know their worth, people that are fulfilled, happy, busy, full of dreams and projects, those with serenity and a belief in God, those who understand that we are just passing by, cannot feel envy nor do they allow themselves to be affected by bullying. They have so many positive things to occupy them and so little time to live them that they do not have time to see what others are doing. They have no time for senseless criticism. There will always be those who need to discharge their emotional miseries onto others. This is inevitable. The rocks that get thrown at me, only serve to strengthen my ramparts. And those that are left over, I use them to build bridges towards new goals. I always tell our followers never to allow criticism to define their behavior. Do not allow yourselves to be dominated, bent or intimidated. Don’t let anyone take away your brilliance. Never hand over the keys to your life to anyone, nor allow those that make fun or gossip about you to close your path. You don’t have to be like others tell you to be, nor do you have to imitate anyone in particular. You have a right to express yourself and say what you think as often as you want.

How has your move to Doral Miami been? What do you like the most about our city? I love my country, Venezuela. It opened its arms to me when I was only 40 days old. I am eternally grateful for everything it gave me while I lived there. Everything I am today, I owe to Venezuela and its beautiful people. However, for the last two years I have felt the need to step onto the international scene. I wanted to take our message further. Miami is the perfect showcase to reach all the Spanish-speaking community in the United States and the world. I love Doral because it keeps me connected with Venezuela and its people. When you transition to a new country and you arrive at a place surrounded by the people and culture you left behind, it becomes much easier. This city is full of courageous Venezuelans, all hoping for a better future. For that reason they give the best they have to give to get ahead. I could not find better inspiration.
“The rocks that get thrown at me, only serve to strengthen my ramparts. And those that are left over, I use them to build bridges towards new goals” Where can we find your book? It can be found in bookstores in the USA and Puerto Rico that carry books in Spanish. It can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, Books and Books, Target and Amazon. Amazon also sells it in digital format. To what do you attribute your success? How did you achieve it? I am just an ordinary woman, like most of those who live on this planet. I fight against my genetic predisposition to be a little chubby. I work hard to make my living. I still have many dreams and projects to complete. I am starting a new life in a different country. Sometimes I lose my motivation, feel frustrated or lose my patience when I don’t achieve what I want.
Samar Yorde recommends:
Tips and Advice for 2016 1
Have no limits or barriers - Learn to think outside the box, to look for solutions and answers for all the challenges you encounter.
2 3
Have very clear objectives - Know what you want in life and where to find it. Keep yourself focused on your objectives.
Turn blind, deaf and mute when people tell you that you are unable to do something - As Samar says, “tell me I cannot do it and sit down to watch me do it.”
4 Be strong and resilient - Get up with more strength every time you fall down. Do this as many times as needed.
5
Believe in God and in your potential - Trust yourself. Understand that all human beings are the creators of or own circumstances.
6 Be authentic - Do not pose or give yourself airs. Accept yourself without thinking about what others might think of you.
7 Believe in people - Work in a team because together you can achieve much more. If you cannot do something on your own, don’t hesitate to ask for help.
8
Be grateful - With God, with life, with your family and with those who do you good.
9 Accept what happens without complaints - There is no time to lose when it comes to achieving your dreams. Complaining means a great waste of time and energy.
10 Be positive and courageous - Decide to
conquer fear and take risks, always expecting the best from life. Being positive is a habit that pushes you to risk everything to achieve your dreams.

- What is your favorite thing about Doral?
MANNY SARMIENTO
PRESIDENT & CEO OF DORAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Live Doral Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Manny Sarmiento, CEO and founder of the Doral Chamber of Commerce. With hundreds of members the chamber serves as a way to connect businesses both small and large throughout Doral and beyond. The Doral Chamber of Commerce hosts various networking events, training seminas and educational courses, greatly benefitting Doral businesses and the residents in the area. - What are the benefits of a business joining the Chamber? There are many practical benefits of joining the Doral Chamber of Commerce, including access to live New Media and online marketing classes in Social Media, SEO, Email Marketing, Local Business Marketing and more. The first thing we do is meet with all new chamber members for a Marketing Strategy Session. I hold these sessions personally. The goal is to have our new members understand how to get the most benefits and return on investment from their DCC membership. Doral Chamber of Commerce members can enjoy one or more QuickBooks for Business classes free of charge. QuickBooks is the number one tool for business accounting. MANNY SARMIENTO
- Tell us what motivated you to start a Chamber of Commerce in Doral? Doral was missing an organization that worked for businesses. A Chamber of Commerce is an entity that helps businesses thrive and aids city governments in growing their business community by ensuring the success of their business base. - What is the role of the Doral Chamber of Commerce? The Doral Chamber focuses on educationbased marketing and practical events, workshops and classes that aids business owners, managers, CEO’s, CMO’s or entrepreneurs in growing their business by understanding new business, new media and new marketing. It’s a wealth of knowledge to help you thrive in the new era of New Media and New Marketing!

But one of the most intriguing and practical benefits of joining the DCC is the ability to host a workshop on your subject matter. You prepare the workshop and we set up the Event Page, Registration page, all of the email and social media marketing. This has fantastic value to any business! - Doral has grown very quickly in the last few years...how do you see it growing in the next 5 years? We have to be careful with too much growth! I hate to be a doom and gloom person but real estate prices cannot sustain these exorbitant increases. Business growth will continue at todays pace for about a year but once again, too much growth is often times not sustainable. When I teach a marketing class I say to my students; “we are in an era where your business will either thrive quickly, or die quickly”. Business owners must educate themselves or suffer the consequence of technological dinosaur-ism! (New word I just invented)
Doral feels like a fresh city! We are the hub of international trade and could be the next hub for technology and innovation! - How does the Chamber help businesses grow? We take the business ignorance out of the business owner, train them, educate them, change their mindset and create a new FrankenDor business owner with greater strength and toughness and the ability to sustain and thrive in their ventures! - In what ways does the Chamber interact with the local community and its local businesses? Part of the Doral Chamber of Commerce events are networking events where you can meet other professionals, interact and create new business for you and them. One of the best events we have is Speed Networking, where you have two minutes two speak to the other person about your business. The bell then rings and you move on the next person. It’s fast, it’s fun and it’s practical! We also host business blitzes where we invite professionals to visit your business. - What type of businesses benefit best from joining the Doral Chamber of Commerce? People like to say that we are about the SMBs, but any business can benefit from membership. We have all kinds and sizes of business from all over the area, including Sam’s Club, Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables, The Related Group, Carnival Cruise Lines and others.

H
Salud! How to SUCCEED
Your Fitness New Years Resolutions
The number one New Years Resolution is losing weight according to U.S. government survey. 45% of Americans will make a New Years Resolution. Unfortunately only 8% of those making the resolution will succeed in achieving their goals. By Valentines Day most people that start a fitness New Years Resolution have quit. Yet, the statistics show that the average fitness resolutions last only eight days from the start date. Are you tired of starting every new years a fitness plan as part of your New Years Resolutions and failing? Why did you fail? Did you quit out of laziness, boredom, due to a program that did not give you results or were you injured? My goal as a martial arts instructor and fitness trainer is to help everyone to get in the best shape of your life in the quickest and safest manner. I have been training for over 40 years training in martial arts and fitness. I believe in results driven programs in a safe and healthy environment. Longevity is my main objective. I want all of my clients to stay fit and train for life. Yet, by no means do I believe in pampering them. To get results you must train hard. A good trainer will teach you proper technique, monitor your progress, and train you around any injury you might have.
10 Tips to Achieve Your Fitness Goals 1. Life Style
Resolutions, diets, and training programs don’t work without a lifestyle change. Working out and eating healthy is part of my routine just like brushing my teeth is. In the beginning eating healthy and sticking to a training routine take discipline, yet with time it becomes a lifestyle.
2. Enjoy the Workout
Find a fitness workout or class that you enjoy doing. I personally enjoy martial arts and strength training. I don’t like doing cardio or dancing, so I do my cardio shadow boxing and hitting a heavy bag.
3. Nutrition is Queen
Jack LaLane the Godfather of Fitness who lived to the age of 96 said that “Fitness is King, Nutrition is Queen together we have a kingdom.” Some people say that nutrition is 70 to 80% of your success in a fitness program.
4. Proper Technique
To stay injury free and for you to benefit 100% from your chosen workout routine you must use proper technique. Never continue or go to failure when you are exhausted and you start losing your posture and body alignment.

5. Recovery
What you do in between your training sessions is even more important than what you do in your training. When you workout you break muscle tissue. It takes 48 hours for complete recovery. If you do not recover from your workouts, then progress will come to a screeching halt and injuries occur.
6. Keep a Log
Keeping a log of your goals, workouts and eating habits will keep you honest and consistent in your chosen workout.
7. Consistency
Try not to miss any workouts. If you do get right on track the next day or make it up before the week is over.
8. Accountability
Enlist a friend or family member to workout with you. Become friends with like-minded people that workout and eat healthy. Motivational speaker Zig Ziggler said, “you become the some of the ten people you associate with.”
9. Motivation
I listen to numerous motivational speakers to keep myself motivated. It is said that motivation is like bathing. We need to bath every day to stay clean. We also need to listen to and motivate ourselves on a daily bases.
10. Avoid the Dream Stealers
Stay away from negative people that tell you you will not succeed or you’re wasting your time. Avoid friends that tempt you by telling you to skip workouts and eat unhealthy. Success attracts success; so stay clear of negative people. Make 2016 the year that you finally succeed in your New Years resolutions. Restaurant Pick
Tradition will go beyond the parameters of the dining room to include a progressive beverage program, which integrates Japanese flavors, culture, and inspiration to enhance the connection between the guest and spirits. The program will feature a dedicated Japanese ice program, a rare and award-winning Japanese whiskey list complete with eight of the top ten Japanese whiskeys, a seasonal Omakase cocktail list and a unique sake and shōchū list. The program is built to celebrate the meticulous practice of Japanese beverage making in an artful, authentic and approachable manner. The restaurant’s adjoining fish market will nod to the famous Tsukiji Fish Market and the many popular street vendors in Japan. Market items will range from house-made rubs to seafood sourced from local and exotic waters across the globe. In addition, it will offer kits to recreate Dragonfly-inspired meals at home, bento boxes to-go, salads, rice bowls and educational seafood workshops.

Leung, a first-generation Japanese/Chinese immigrant, and Song Y. Kim, a second-generation Korean immigrant. With two existing Florida locations, Dragonfly concepts are inspired by izakayas, which are modern-day interpretations of Japanese momand-pop taverns. This February, a third location will open in the highly anticipated Downtown Doral project (5241 NW 87th Avenue) with a spotlight on an artisan fish market. Leung’s vision is to have each location encompass one of several founding culinary principles of Japanese cuisine; the brand’s flagship location in Gainesville focuses on sushi while the Orlando location concentrates on robatayaki (robata grill).
“Our goal is to bring flavorful dishes and creations to Miami while building those shared moments between the friends and family we value,” says Leung. “In keeping with
that same motto of creating experiences, we encourage guests to step out of their comfort zones and embrace a different culture’s traditions, not just amongst friends, but also with food.” The menu at the new space, boasting more than 6,000 square feet, is heavily inspired by Leung’s dedication to preserving the distant memories of visiting the fish market and street vendors back home with his father before preparing family meals. The dining room will feature Japanese comfort food-inspired izakaya dishes. Dishes found on the menu include okonomiyaki ( Japanese egg seafood pancakes) and teishoku (meal set) for a casual afternoon to a robatayaki grilled whole chicken (neck-totail) tasting menu, fresh market oysters, as well as sushi and sashimi selections prepared by Dragonfly’s master chefs.
The artisan fish market will have several street fare inspired grab-and-go bento boxes and rice bowls prepared fresh throughout the day. The market will also feature a variety of house-made and unique or hard-to-find boutique items such as, Japanese White Shoyu and Kentucky Bluegrass Soy Sauces, artisanal Kika Treats, whole local fish, fresh exotic catches and special house-blend rice mixes, sauces, dressings and rubs. Prices will range from several dollars to market pricing on seafood. Dragonfly is located at 5241 NW 87th Avenue in Doral, Fla.
