Editor’s Letter

¡Bendiciones!

We take this opportunity to give special thanks to our clients, contributors, friends and everyone else who attended this event. We would especially like to thank the Bernal family, La Fontana Ristorante, Doral Events, Roxana Silvera, DoralNow.TV and Miami Extrema for their help during the event. Even though we say the same thing every year, it is really incredible how we are already in the last quarter of the year and have the holiday season right around the corner. Ideally you have accomplished the majority of the goals you had established for 2015, if not, you are never too late to revisit them and/or restart your goals. We hope you enjoyed your vacation or staycation and use your newly recharged batteries during fall to relax, meditate and find your true balance. Finding that peace now will let you have a great end of the year and get you ready for the challenges and goals for the upcoming year. Cheers!!

DIAGNOSING BREAST CANCER

B

reast cancer can strike anyone, young or old, male or female, from all ethnic backgrounds and walks of life. Former first lady Betty Ford, “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, singer Olivia Newton-John and actor Richard Roundtree are all breast cancer survivors. Their breast cancer experiences began when the disease was diagnosed because a symptom or screening test suggested breast cancer. “The most common sign of breast cancer is a lump or mass. Other common symptoms include breast swelling, skin irritation, the nipple turning inward, nipple discharge (not breast milk), and breast or nipple pain,” explains Dr. Nuria Lawson, a surgeon specializing in breast health at Palmetto General Hospital. “These signs may be noticed during a breast self-exam, routine clinical breast exam or screening mammogram.”

• Surgery may be recommended to remove all or part of a lump for examination. During an incisional biopsy, a sample is removed from the abnormal area. An excisional biopsy involves removing the entire mass as well as a surrounding margin of normal tissue. If cancer cells are found after a biopsy, test results can determine the cancer type and whether it is invasive (likely to spread) or in situ (localized). Invasive cancers are assigned a grade based on how closely the sample resembles normal tissue and the likelihood the cancer will grow and spread. An estrogen and progesterone receptor test can determine if hormone therapy may help stop the cancer from growing. A human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 test can measure a growth factor protein that may cause cancer cells to spread more aggressively.

If a suspicious-looking area is detected, additional testing will be used to Palmetto General Hospital is working to honor the women that either confirm a breast cancer diagnosis or identify a benign condition. have dedicated themselves to taking care of their loved ones. Mammogram Marathon

Three tests used to diagnose breast conditions are diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A diagnostic mammogram, which generates X-ray pictures, focuses on a specific area of the breast and takes more detailed pictures of the areas that look abnormal. An ultrasound, which uses sound waves, can help doctors determine if an abnormality is a benign fluid-filled cyst or a potentially cancerous solid mass. MRI, which uses radio waves and strong magnets, is sometimes used to look for tumors that did not appear on a mammogram.

Imaging tests can help locate a breast mass, but they cannot confirm a breast cancer diagnosis. This is done during a biopsy to remove cells or tissue samples for laboratory testing. There are three main types of biopsies: • Fine needle aspiration biopsy involves inserting a very thin needle into the suspicious area to withdraw cells. Ultrasound may be used to guide the needle if the lump cannot be easily located. • A core needle biopsy uses a slightly larger needle to remove three to five small cylinders of tissue from the breast abnormality. Larger core biopsies can be performed using suction to remove tissue samples. 10

Are Squats the Best Way T O

G E T

B E A U T I F U L

R O U N D

With the increasing popularity of the fitness culture in the last few years, we have also seen a big increase in the notion that squatting is the best “fail proof way to achieve the desirable round butt look every girl (and husband) wants. We have all seen the Internet and social medias flooded with messages about squats and their benefits and even though they truly are effective, it seems like very few people talk about the dangers associated with not doing them properly or over doing them.

B U T T

?

In this issue I will give you the three most common errors people are making about squatting as well as three of my favorite alternative butt exercises which you can include in your routine as part of your gluteus workout and are just us effective and less dangerous than squatting. Mistake #1: Improper technique. Squats are a rather advanced and complex exercise that requires proper technique to be safe and effective. Not utilizing proper technique can have devastating consequences to your back hips and/or knees. Very few people will hire a coach to teach them the correct technique nor will they at least go thorough the trouble of researching the proper technique.

Exercise: Barbell hip thrust.

Mistake #2: Too much weight. The use of too much weight often leads you to use other muscles instead of using the one your supposed to. These means that even if you have the best technique for squatting, it will be compromised because you are using too much weight and that could lead to injuries. Mistake #3: Overdoing it. With all the popularity that squats have been getting over the past few years, mixed with the desperation of people to achieve their goals, it is often common to find people overdoing squats (doing too many sets in a workout and two many workouts that include squats in a week). But inst ad of getting more or faster results, this only leads you to potential injuries and maybe even a reduction of the muscle mass leaving you with smaller and softer glutes.

Exercise: Goblet Bulgarian Split Squat.

Exercise: Barbell hip thrust.

INTERIORISMO

ESPACIO Y COLOR

GASTRONOMY

In la Cucina di T R AT T O R I A D I C A M P O

SEPTEMBER 2015

Known for its distinguished cuisine, La Trattoria di Campo is positioned as one of the best classic contemporary Italian restaurants in Doral. The director behind the kitchen is Chef Luciano Balzano. From a young age his dream was to be an engineer, however, early on he had a change of heart after experiencing the culinary world with his family’s hospitality business. Ultimately Luciano graduated from Bristol Culinary School in Genoa Italy and soon after worked in high-end restaurants throughout Europe as well as the famous Costa Cruise Lines. Luciano’s many accomplishments include being one of the youngest chefs to ever receive a “Four Star” rating by the Sun Sentinal Restaurateur Reviewer at the ripe age of 21. He earned this rating as the Executive Chef of “Il Tartufo” restaurant on Las Olas Boulevard. In its heyday the restaurant was a staple of gourmet food in Fort Lauderdale and was often frequented by artists like Robert De Niro and Demi Moore which Luciano loved to delight. Outside of Europe and the US Luciano also had the opportunity of working with the Rosenthal chain in Dubai, Sandals in the Caribbean, Mykonos in Boca Raton and the famous Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada, Florida. With his vast experience and a reputation that precedes him Trattoria di Campo recruited Luciano as the executive chef in 2013 for its new restaurant in Doral. It is at Trattoria di Campo where Luciano had the opportunity to bring all of his culinary techniques and create a menu specifically designed to bring real Italian gastronomy to the city of Doral.

During weekdays Trattoria di Campo serves as a meeting point for many business lunches in its modern yet cozy atmosphere. The restaurant is especially known as a weeknight and weekend destination as a place to enjoy the warm ambience with family and friends. Elegance and simplicity are reflected in in the restaurants design and decoration. The wood oven perfumes the restaurant arousing your sense of smell while the tabletops are set with green and burgundy checkered tablecloths that transport the visitor to a short trip to Italy. A wide selection of award winning wines and a variety of beers are offered at the bar impressively decorated with an illuminated onyx stone that serves as the countertop. Separating the bar area from the tables is a custom built waterfall divider which provides pleasure to the eyes and tranquility to the ears as diners listen to the soft drops of water in the background. Like every authentic Italian kitchen, the main secret is found in the chef ’s ingredients. Trattoria di Campo only uses fresh products imported directly from Italy. The pastas and desserts are homemade from scratch giving it an authentic taste not found anywhere else. As per high demand Chef Luciano has added a special “Schiacciata” to the menu. In order to properly prepare this dish and others Trattoria di Campo brought in a wood fired oven directly from Italy. In addition to adding a warming aroma to the kitchen and restaurant the wood fired oven is used for other signature dishes including; Gratin pasta, Branzino al sale (Salted fish) and Costadelle di Agnello allo Oporto (Lamb chops in port wine).

Signature dishes served at Trattoria di Campo include: The famous Polipo alla griglia made in a texture rich flavor, Fresh handmade pasta served with a wide variety of sauces & Ossobuco di Ternera al Chianti with Risotto Chef ’s Tip: To enjoy the expertise and authenticity of the Chef ’s preparation you should limit the amount of additional toppings and ingredients after the plate has been served.

INTERVIEW

The Virtuous V I O L I N I S T

Live Doral Magazine had the pleasure to sit with the beautiful and talented Mrs. Aisha Syed Castro – a world class violinist whom has traveled the world delighting thousands of classical music enthusiasts with her musical talents. Often described as a virtuous and gifted artist, Aisha has broken tradition in the classic music world as she was the first Latin American female to be admitted to the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School. Aisha Syed began her interest in violin at the age of four taking private lessons in ‘El Hogar de la Armonía’ in the Dominican Republic, where she was born. A year after taking lessons, she became part of the Dominican Youth Symphony Orchestra (DYSO) in the first violins. Her mastery of the instrument developed so rapidly that by the time she was eight years old she was performing concerts and recitals as a soloist. At age eleven, Aisha made her debut with the Dominican Symphony Orchestra (DSO) becoming the youngest Dominican soloist to perform there as she played Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor. These early successes prepared the way to her acceptance into the school of child prodigies Yehudi Menuhin School in England, making her the first Latin American female to be admitted at the school and escalating her career to a whole new level. Although Aisha has a very busy agenda as she travels most of the time for her concerts, she resides in Doral with her husband and says that one of the things she enjoys most about our city is the combination of different cultures, the Spanish- English language mix, and especially the friendliness of our citizens which give a breath of fresh air to any resident who resides in the area. How did you get interested in classic music? I come from the Dominican Republic where you can find music in nearly every corner. We are happy people and part of that happiness comes from the music we listen to, we wholeheartedly like to celebrate with music. Now, I was exposed to the classical music genre specifically because my mother loves it and when we were little my siblings and I were all in some sort of music lessons. 20

What motivated you to play the violin? My interest in the violin is born out of trying to copy all the things my sister did, she played the violin before me so I wanted to do just that. Also when I first heard the sonatas and partitas by Johann Sebastian Bach, who is probably one of the if not the most outstanding classical music composer to have set foot on earth (he dedicated all compositions to God) I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. -You are the first Hispanic girl being accepted to the Yehudi Menuhin School in England, tell us about that experience. I thank God for such a blessing, I remember the day before getting to the UK to audition at the school my mother had a miscarriage in the Dominican Republic. Some very gracious people helped cover the costs for the airplane tickets as we couldn’t afford them and off we went. It was 2002 and I spoke no English besides the “hello” and “goodbye” basics. The audition process was not a day as we thought it would be so I arrived at the boarding school with no extra clothes, a student had to lend me some. I remember after the final day of tests my mother was given an appointment with the Headmaster and Director of Music to inform her if I had been accepted. As she came out and I saw her face beaming with joy I knew the outcome was positive. That was just the start of a very long but worthwhile journey. I then spent nearly seven years at that LIVEDORALMAGAZINE

wonderful school which taught me the real meaning of excellency and discipline. We had both academic and musical lessons every day including weekends plus practice hours and on top of that two or three concerts a week. It was tough but definitely rewarding. - You dedicate your concerts to God; tell us about your faith and how it has influenced your life and your career. I converted to Christianity out of conviction when I was fifteen. My mother was a nominal catholic (she is also a Christian now) and my father is a Muslim. Before becoming a Christian I felt there was “something” bigger than humans and everyday life but as I was brought up in an unusual kind of way with two religions in one family I didn’t prioritize on having a relationship with God. I saw religion as the reason my parents fought and argued so much. Then my mother, all my siblings and myself had a car accident while I was on holiday in the DR and the only person who came to help us was a Christian lady. She then later took us to a service at at her church (which by the way I don’t think would have happened unless the accident had taken place as my family and I used to criticize Christians) and when I encountered the Lord Jesus, I am telling you, I finally knew why I had come to this world, and to know He came to save me by His grace not my “works” was something I hadn’t come across in other religions. I then decided to play for Him every concert, to live for Him every day by accepting Him as Lord and Savior over my life. SEPTEMBER 2015

“I come from the Dominican Republic where you can find music in nearly every corner.” -How is your daily routine and how is your day before a concert? I am usually away from home as is the case now. I am in Brazil to perform two concerts, the Tchaikovsky violin concerto accompanied by the National Theater Symphony Orchestra of Brazil then the day after that one takes place we perform our “Fantasy World Tour” concert, both in Brasilia. When I am away from home the daily routine is as follows: a good sleep the night before any concert, prayer and Bible reading first thing, early practice, rehearsals with the orchestra, Maestro or pianist accompanying me in any given concert, a good lunch, an afternoon nap, some more practice, another slot of prayer, the concert and then a thankful prayer whatever the result has been. What cities have you visited with the “Fantasy World Tour 2015” and where are you planning on going? With “Fantasy World Tour 2015” we have performed so far in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Vienna in Austria, Bern in Switzerland, Frankfurt in Germany, London in the UK, Brasilia in Brazil and in November we will be performing in Barcelona on the 13th and Valencia on the 14th in Spain, Milan on the 10th in Italy, Miami on the 20th and many others. We also had an interview on the iconic BBC in London where we performed at the famous “In Tune” programme live, not only that but the day after the broadcast our performance of “La Campanella” by Paganini was chosen by God’s grace to go on their prestigious “Performing Miracles” list, where artists such as Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniil Trifonov have been. Besides our “Fantasy World Tour” I will be touring and performing worldwide with wonderful symphony orchestras, the first one being in Brazil in the month of October with the National Theater Symphony Orchestra of Brazil, then with the London City Orchestra in the UK also with the Tchaikovsky violin concerto, the Cali Symphony Orchestra in Colombia performing the Brahms violin concerto and other concerts including Peru, Costa Rica and Guadalupe. A huge blessing!

the most wonderful instruments a violinist could ever dream of. I have the privilege to be able to perform on the “Willemotte” (made in 1734) and the “Stephens” (made in 1690) violins which are both Stradivarius as well as an Antonius Pelizon one also from the eighteenth century, all made by Italian makers. What is your mission not only as an artist but on the personal level? Of course as an artist it is always nice to know you inspire people and to leave a legacy of recordings, awards and philanthropic work to benefit the needy, in my case through my foundation Music for Life in Dominican Republic. But for me is about inspiring people at a deeper level, I want people to look at my life and say “she lived for Christ, I will too.” We have seen you play the violin and we can see you do it with a profound passion, what do you feel when you are playing, especially when debuting in front of thousands of people? Its a mix of emotions. I have to be in control emotionally so I don’t let emotions take over I experiment a level of focus that absorbs a lot.

of energy that cannot be wasted. I try to do justice to the composer I am interpreting, whether Beethoven, Bach or Martinaitis. What rounds everything up is reminding myself I play for God, then it all holds on together. What message you would like to share with the new generation that would like to start a career in the arts. Firstly, ask them if they love what they have chosen, especially with children, as some parents tend to be pushy beyond degree. Then I would tell them how noble it is to be involved in creating music which cannot be seen or touched but can be felt beyond many things we see and touch every day, it is truly a privilege to play music. I would urge them to be discipline in the most radical of ways and most important of all things mentioned, trust your path to the Lord Jesus. When is your concert in Miami? I will be performing our “Fantasy World Tour” concert in Miami at the St. Hugh-Steinwey Concert Series on November 20. For more information or tickets visit the website sthughconcerts.org hope to see you all there!

What has been your favorite concert? My favourite concert is nearly always my last one. Just because it will help me know the things I can better for the next one. What Violins do you play with? I thank God for Florian Leonhard Fine Violins in London. They have provided me with some of 21

El poder de las Preguntas Productivas

N

BEAUTY

chance to make a first impression A first impression is always the most memorable one, so you better make a good one! In today’s world our personal image is extremely important. In this digital age, with vast social media exposure and google image searches - whether we like it or not, we must try and maintain ourselves as pristine and presentable as possible. Any picture we pose for can be uploaded and seen by millions of people worldwide on the web. You don’t want that one bad image or bad angle to create a false perception of you, whether it be on a social or professional level. Depending on your career or industry, this can affect your business and the prospects of a more lucrative professional life. For men and women in a professional setting it is important to present themselves in a way that is professionally appropriate. In the Oxford Dictionary IMAGE is described as “a representation of the external form of a person or thing in art”. In this meaning the word “art” can easily mean a photo or video. Even our clothing, accessories and grooming habits are ways that we “paint” or draw ourselves to create the image of ourselves we choose to portray to the world. In reality we are our own artists drawing our own personal image each day. A first impression based on non-verbal communication goes a long way in influencing this perception. Within seconds of meeting you and based on a single observed physical trait or behavior, people will make assumptions and form opinions about you whether they are right or wrong. It is up to you to make sure that the image you want to portray about yourself is accurately represented in the way in which you present yourself. When was the last time you had a makeover? A new hair style? New wardrobe? Well these are important questions you must answer if you want to compete in today’s professional market. Within seconds of meeting someone for the first time, your appearance, body language and non-verbal communication will create a lasting first impression.

So here are some tips to make a great first impression For Women: • Age Appropriate Make-up: Just because heavy thick blue eyeliner is in fashion, that does not mean you can wear it to the office or on a job interview. Get inspired and search for looks that will adapt to your age, profession and personal style. • Appropriate shoes: This is a touchy subject - I know you fashionistas out there love those high heel platform stilettos. Unless they are extremely comfortable, and I mean, as comfortable as a sneaker - skip it at the office. There is nothing more painful than seeing a woman in high heels walking awkwardly in discomfort. It’s not attractive or professionally appealing, plus it’s bad for your feet and back. Save them for the office party! For Men: • Clothes for the occasion: A man can get away with several things when it comes to office wardrobe especially in the technology or creative fields. However, please no shorts or bermuda pants at the office, unless it’s officially an informal after work group event like a baseball game or happy hour. • If you are over the age of 30 leave the tight pants and “tennis shoes with a suit” combo to the younger lads. • Grooming: There is nothing more appealing than a clean shaven face but, if you wear a beard you must keep it properly groomed at all times. • If you have grey hair please do not dye it. Unless it is professionally done it will look fake and this will not be forgotten.

Number Sense Taking the Fear out of Math

F

Like the ripples on the surface of a pond, the outer arcs cannot exist until the inner ones do.

ear of math is an attitude that is all too prevalent, not just among students but among adults as well. We often come across people who say, “I just don’t get Math”. Whereas, nobody ever says they “just don’t get reading”! The idea that math is somehow for the smart few who ‘get it’, is a fallacy. As Larry Martinek, Founder of Mathnasium, says, “Children don’t hate math. They hate being confused and intimidated by math. With understanding comes passion. And with passion comes growth -a treasure is unlocked.” The key to unlock this treasure that leads to true math success, is ‘Number Sense’. What is ‘Number Sense’? In her book ‘About Teaching Mathematics’, Marilyn Burns describes a student with number sense as “(they) can think and reason flexibly with numbers, use numbers to solve problems, spot unreasonable answers, understand how numbers can be taken apart and put together in different ways, see connections among operations, figure mentally and make reasonable estimates.” Number Sense is the most essential component in a person’s ‘math tool kit,’ It develops gradually and over an extended period of time and is gleaned from a series of experiences. It is essential that children create mental structures, or frameworks for leaning. These structures give them a way to ‘figure-it-out,’ especially when confronted with problems they may not have seen before. It occurs when math is taught for understanding, rather than memorization. After all it is easy to forget things you memorize but difficult to forget things you understand. Examples of Number Sense When confronted with the addition problem 99+99+99 =? most kids would resort to the standard computation procedure. Someone with a better sense of numbers, however, would realize that 99 is 1 less than 100, and instead add 100 three times and subtract 3 to get to the answer of 297!! 1000 divide by 16 ends up usually being approached as a long division problem.

28

But it’s really about knowing that a sixteenth of a number is that number divided into half, 4 times. That is, half of 1000 is 500, half of 500 is 250, half of 250 is 125 and half of 125 is 62.5. So 1000 divide by 16 = 62.5! Two examples where we did not need to use pencil to paper. Kids love to call these “math tricks” but it’s really all about not viewing numbers as these intimidating monoliths that cannot be broken down and reconstructed at will. Tackling a Lack of Number Sense More often than not it is possible to plod through elementary school without a semblance of number sense. This unaddressed lack of number sense drags the child deeper and deeper into a labyrinth of confusion that eventually shows up as a festering wound in middle school. After all Math is a sequential skill where topics learnt in early years become pre-requisite knowledge for topics encountered in later grades (refer to illustration). Therefore ignoring gaps in early math education, most of which being foundational skills, is a recipe for future math anxiety. The unfortunate panacea that most people resort to when a child is struggling with math, is to hire a tutor to help with homework and tests pertaining to that grade. This is like putting a band aid on the festering wound without really addressing the deeper infection. The need of the hour is to diagnose these knowledge and number sense gaps (both current and past grades) and draw up a targeted and customized learning plan to address these gaps in a holistic manner. It would be apt to say that number sense is to math what phonemic awareness is to childhood reading. According to educators Gersten & Chard, “just as our understanding of phonemic awareness has revolutionized the teaching of beginning reading, the influence of number sense on early math development and more complex mathematical thinking carries implications for instructions”. Building number sense can surely take the fear out of math.

Dr.

Pedro Serrano-Ojeda Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center CEO and Chief Radiation Oncologist

C

aribbean Radiation Oncology Center is a premier medical facility providing the highest quality of patient care and featuring state-of-the-art technology. Founded in 2007 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, the clinic recently expanded its reach to South Florida, opening the doors of its second location in Doral. The new clinic is one of the first in Florida to provide preeminent treatment to cancer patients with its TomoTherapy HDA unit, the most integrated, advanced system for comprehensive cancer care that is available today.

LD:How does Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center differ from other oncology centers in the U.S.?

CEO and Chief Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Pedro Serrano-Ojeda, and his wife and co-owner of the clinic and CEO of Coquí Pharma, Carmen I. Bigles, are health care industry leaders, striving to facilitate a smooth fight against cancer for each and every patient.

PS: We pride ourselves on employing a very personalized approach for each patient and our technology is the most advanced for radiation treatment. Our facility is one of the first in Florida to feature the TomoTherapy HDA unit, which is the most integrated and advanced system for comprehensive cancer treatment in radiation therapy that is available today. By precisely targeting and attacking cancer cells, TomoTherapy HDA effectively treats hard-to-reach, complex tumors while decreasing secondary side effects caused by standard radiation treatments. We also differentiate ourselves in patient quality of treatment. Our studies have been published in Medical Physics and American Association of Physics in Medicine.

Live Doral Magazine spoke with Dr. Serrano-Ojeda at Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center.

LD: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in all your years of treating cancer patients?

LD: Why did you decide to launch your own oncology practice?

PS: I have encountered some patients that have either received the incorrect treatment, delayed treatment, or no treatment at all. It’s important to understand that every case of cancer is different and therefore, needs a corresponding treatment plan to that specific case. At Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center, we walk shoulder to shoulder with our patients and assure that they receive the very best cancer treatment and care.

PS: During my residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, I had the opportunity to study under prominent medical professionals including Dr. Frank Wilson, the protégé of the legendary radiation oncologist Dr. Juan Del Regato. Working with such renowned doctors, whose dedication to their patients and field was exemplary, inspired me to establish a cancer facility of my own and to provide my patients with the most advanced technology available paired with compassionate and personalized care. LD: Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center recently expanded from Puerto Rico to South Florida. Why did you decide to establish a clinic here in Doral? PS: Doral is one of America’s fastest growing cities and is easily accessible for our local and international patients.

LD: This reminds us of your motto. Can you tell us a little bit about it? PS: Our motto is, “A Work of Love, Our Mission: To Cure.” At Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center, we are opening doors of hope as we establish medical standards to be followed by our peers and by generations to come. All of our patients receive premium and specialized care with high-quality service, innovation and compassion.
