WELCOME IMAGINE SETTING OUT on a weekend break where the same clothes, shoes and accessories will see you right for all your walks and for everything else you do around them. This is your handbook to that weekend. We love walking, but we also know that a weekend away means more than just walks: it means travel, sightseeing, eating out, chilling; a museum, a gallery, maybe even a little retail therapy. So we've set out to ďŹ nd walking gear that also works in all those places. Gear that will take you up a hill but look perfectly at home in a chic coffee bar or a city pub. Gear that feels good, works properly and looks great. Gear that bridges the gap between town and country. And gear that saves you money, because you can wear it anywhere. Nick Hallissey Gear Editor, Country Walking

ONE COLLECTION A THOUSAND USES SCARPA速 LIFESTYLE

MOJITO, MOJITO GTX & MARGARITA GTX

HANDMADE IN ITALY - ESTABLISHED IN 1938

FOOTWEAR

Go from city to summit in one move – without even changing your shoes. WHY PACK THREE pairs of shoes for a weekend away when one will do? It may be a fate worse than death for fully fledged fashionistas, but it's a godsend when you just want to chuck your kit in a bag on a Friday night and hit the high road. Here are seven pairs of multi-functional shoes which look fantastic on the street but pack enough grip, toughness and weatherproofing to take you into the hills, too.

SCARPA MOJITO £150 The Mojito looks as cool as a Converse, especially with its sumptuous range of colours for both genders, including lime, plum and aquamarine. But it has the style and grip of a rock-climbing boot, including a Vibram sole. There’s even a Gore-Tex version. An utterly reliable companion on the hill and a major talking point at a party. scarpa.co.uk

G E A R T H AT W O R K S O N T H E H I L L A N D O N T H E H I G H S T R E E T

MAMMUT SLOPER LOW £100 The Sloper might look like your average pair of über-cool sneakers, but beneath the sleek urban styling sits the gutsy, adventurous heart of Mammut’s more specialised footwear. What could almost pass for a canvas upper is actually water-resistant calf leather, and the sole is borrowed from one of the brand’s best trail-running shoes. A comfy insole and robust toecap finish it off in style. mammut.ch

ASOLO EMBER £100 The Ember is a more technical-looking approach shoe, but with enough subtlety and style to look good in town. It uses Asolo’s Natural Shape technology, which cradles your foot beautifully and provides exceptional traction. We’ve done miles in the Ember and its male counterpart the Plasmic – including CW’s cross-London walking trail – and it has performed magnificently. asolo.com

KEEN DURAND MID £140 It may be less easily disguised around town than the Asolo, but the Durand still looks about as cool and subtle as a walking boot ever can. With its polyurethane rubber outsole and Keen waterproof membrane, it’s a tough prowler in a very funky frame. And if the boot is a bit too full-on for your urban hikes, it also comes in a low shoe version. keenfootwear. com

HI-TEC PHOENIX SPORT £60 A classic, reliable Hi-Tec walking boot disguised as a downtown high-top. As well as looking great, there is genuine outdoor DNA here: an Ortholite insole, a deep-lugged outsole for good grip, and the same Dri-Tec waterproof membrane that appears on Hi-Tec’s Altitude walking boots. Perfect for a long day’s sightseeing around town and a country park the next day. hi-tec.com

MERRELL ANNEX GTX £125 A huge amount of thought has gone into the Annex to make it genuinely useful in both urban and rural jungles. The upper is an oily leather which is naturally waterproof and looks great, and there’s a Gore-Tex membrane under the bonnet too. The memory foam insole cradles your foot superbly, and the eye-catching Vibram outsole is as tough as a dodgem car’s bumper. Stunning. merrell.com

ECCO BIOM HYBRID WALK £145 You might be tempted to call this a “loafer”, with its beige leather skin and casual styling. But it’s actually a superb walking shoe. The “hybrid” name relates to its blend of yak and cow leather, which makes it light, supple and very durable. It’s built to last: the upper is heat-bonded directly to the outsole with no need for glue (which can come unstuck) or stitching (which can fray). The outsole isn’t as grippy as some, but it still gives good traction on rock. ecco.com

SHIRTS & TEES Next-to-skin layers that mean you don’t need to look like an athlete… MOUNTAIN WAREHOUSE AGRA TEE £20 As seen on almost every high street in the land, Mountain Warehouse offers functional, no-nonsense kit at bargain-basement prices. But they can have fun, too. The Agra is a gorgeouslooking, rather slinky top which looks great socially but also uses an IsoCool fabric to wick away moisture on a walk. Especially good if you’re chasing winter sun this year. mountainwarehouse.com

SALOMON NEKA POLO £35 The Neka may look similar to the Agra (above), but when it comes to materials and function, it’s a good few steps up, with 50+ UV protection and an active fit which is carefully built around the bust. It’s also luxuriously soft, and the collar keeps the sun off your neck nicely. Great as a base-layer worn beneath warmer layers in the UK, and as a travel top as well. salomon.com

The Katmai is perhaps the perfect technical/casual shirt. It’s made with Páramo’s ground-breaking Parameta A fabric, which is silky-smooth, windproof and UV-resistant, and even converts your perspiration into a coolant on hot days. And yet it looks like something you threw on for the pub. Hidden security pockets make it great for travel, too. paramo.co.uk

JACK WOLFSKIN EDMONT £75 This was one of our favourite finds. The Edmont is made from flannel, which makes it perfect for winter walks when you need breathable warmth next to your skin. Wolfskin are past masters at making technical kit that looks casual, so it’s little surprise that when we wore this, it was the shirt most people asked us about. Rugged, stylish and a social talking point: that’s what this is all about. jack-wolfskin.co.uk

FJÄLLRÄVEN OVIK £70 If you want something a little more substantial than a slimline base-layer, the Ovik is a great shout. At first glance it looks a bit unflattering, but it somehow magically moulded to the CW lady's hips on its run-out in the Peak District, and became a firm favourite. And in the pub afterwards, it has genuine country chic. fjallraven.co.uk

8

PÁRAMO KATMAI LIGHT £60

ICEBREAKER LODGE £140 Icebreaker products are made from New Zealand Merino wool, which is naturally thermostatic and almost completely odour-free. Thus it tends to be at the higher end of the cost scale. The Lodge is 100% Merino and looks beautifully fitted, with sharply defined shoulders. It’s a thicker weave than standard Icebreaker fare, so perfect for walks in colder conditions. icebreaker.com

BACKPACKS

The perfect way to carry laptop, tablet, waterproof and lunch all in one…

YOU’LL FIND THREE distinct styles of crossover backpack: retro, technical and waterproof. Retro packs look perfectly at home in both city and country. Technical packs are twists on regular walking rucksacks, so they have the edge when it comes to carrying loads. Waterproof packs are great if you cycle, too, as they don’t need a rain-cover and use reflective fabrics.

10

FJÄLLRÄVEN RUCKSACK NUMBER 21 £150 The 21 is the king of retro packs (in fact it isn’t really retro – it’s a genuine original pack which has never needed an update). Nothing modern about it, except a removable sit-mat which supports your laptop and helps the pack keep its shape. The straps are real leather and the fabric is Fjällräven’s trademark G-1000, which can be waxed to make it fully waterproof. A class act. fjallraven.co.uk

G E A R T H AT W O R K S O N T H E H I L L A N D O N T H E H I G H S T R E E T

REGATTA HUNTSFIELD £35 If you can’t stretch to the genuine vintage of the Fjällräven, try a modern twist on the retro look. The Huntsfield has faux-leather on its straps and on the base, which makes it highly abrasion-resistant. The Velcro roll-top means the capacity is huge when you’re carrying a big load but compact when you’ve only got the basics. In effect, a 15L and 30L rucksack all in one. regatta.com

VANGO VENTIS £40 The 25L Ventis is essentially a compact, technical outdoor rucksack with an extra compartment for your laptop. It uses Vango’s excellent AirVent back system to keep the load away from your back. It also has roomy hip-belt pockets, great for a GPS and compass in the outdoors or a phone and purse in town. vango.co.uk

AQUAPAC TOCCOA £50

LOWE ALPINE NEXUS £65

The Toccoa is so cool that it looks equally at home on Manchester’s Deansgate as it does on a Peak District hillside. And usefully for both locations, it’s completely waterproof. It is amazingly light and made with fully welded reinforced vinyl, while the roll-top closure keeps the contents bone dry. aquapac.net

The 28L Nexus offers three huge compartments. The rear one is padded to hold a laptop, and includes a fold-down floor to keep it secure. The mid-section is for outdoor kit, while the front pocket is sub-divided for office stuff. The back system is excellent; the subtle urban styling a nice touch. lowealpine.com

OSPREY MOMENTUM £80 This 22L pack boasts the same Airscape ventilated back system used on Osprey’s day-packs, so it’s perfect for a crowded Tube trip. The rear compartment houses your laptop (with padding to keep it safe and a waterproof seam to keep it dry), while the front section swallows everything else. It also comes in a 30L version (£85). ospreypacks.com

ORTLIEB PACKMAN PRO 2 £105 Totally waterproof, the Packman is great for urban cycle commuting but also battle-ready for a serious hill-walk. It’s similar to the Aquapac Toccoa but adds a first-rate back system which vents heat beautifully, plus two external storage pockets that are just as waterproof as the main compartment. ortlieb.co.uk

WARM LAYERS Vests, jackets and pullovers that keep you cosy in the café and on the crag…

FLEECES AND SOFT SHELLS are a walker’s best friend, but they can look out of place in everyday life. Not these ones. Here are seven tops that smuggle serious technology – including PrimaLoft and Polartec – into items you can wear anywhere.

SHERPA ANANTA FLEECE PULLOVER £80 A mountain fleece disguised as an urban hoodie, the Ananta was designed in Nepal and tested by Sherpas. The drawcord cinches the hood so that it keeps your head warm but doesn’t flop down over your eyes. And apparently ananta is the Sanskrit word for "endless" – a fitting name for a top that will go on and on through the seasons. sherpaadventuregear.co.uk

G E A R T H AT W O R K S O N T H E H I L L A N D O N T H E H I G H S T R E E T

BERGANS OF NORWAY VALDRES LIGHT VEST £100 Two places we’ve worn the Valdres recently: high above the Bristol Channel on the cliffs of Great Hangman in Devon, and soaking up the sun among the yachting crowd in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. Maybe it’s just the colour scheme that screams nautical, but with its mix of PrimaLoft insulation and Pertex shell, this is a fantastic utility layer that somehow seems most at home next to water. nordiclifeuk.co.uk

CRAGHOPPERS BOWSHAW JACKET £180 The Bowshaw is really where the idea for Street to Summit began: a soft-shell jacket disguised as tweed. It is probably the perfect item of crossover kit, looking like it belongs in the Reform Club but working brilliantly on Red Pike as well. The shell is waterresistant, and the thick, lined interior will keep you toasty on the coldest of hills. craghoppers.com

BERGHAUS DOVENBY FLEECE PULLOVER £45 The Dovenby is a thing of real beauty. With its high, buttoned collar it looks great in a wintry city street (and will be especially smart at Christmas), but it’s a flawlessly functional outdoor fleece as well. The fabric is so soft you could sleep on it, and we especially love the vintage Berghaus branding on the arm. berghaus.com

ROHAN PATHWAY CARDI £70 Rarely is “vintage technical” done as neatly as this. The Pathway could hail from the 1940s or '60s, but boasts some very modern flourishes: midweight fleece that needs no special washing; a brushed and breathable inner; and cuffs that seal out draughts. And how amazing will it look kicking through autumn leaves? rohan.co.uk

SCHÖFFEL LYNDON FLEECE £125 Schöffel are renowned for their “country pursuit” clothing, but lately they're taking a much greater interest in technical walking kit. So the Lyndon is a chameleon-like, three-way hybrid of country lifestyle, outdoor technical and urban class. It’s a warm fleece gilet that uses the fantastic Polartec fabric to keep you cosy, armed with a midriff drawcord that helps you to fit it perfectly. schoffel.co.uk

ICEBREAKER HELIX VEST £220 Merino wool is usually used as the main fabric of a shirt, but here it’s used for insulation. Filled with Merino loft wool, the Helix will keep you snug and warm even if it gets wet (which explains the rather steep price tag). Thus you look more like a stylish city girl with an interest in the outdoors, and less like you’ve just wandered in off the Pennine Way. The fact that you could walk the Pennine Way in it is your little secret. icebreaker.com

OUTER LAYERS Warm and waterproof layers with a fashion twist, perfect for cold winter days. TAKE THIS PAGE and push it under the nose of anyone who’s ever used the word “anorak” or “cagoule” in reference to your favourite pastime. Walkers don’t wear anoraks or cagoules, and here is indisputable proof: warm, waterproof and totally reliable outdoor jackets that also look fabulous among the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

14

DIDRIKSONS RONJA PARKA £170 Wearing this gorgeous jacket transported us from a sunny afternoon in Sheffield city centre straight into a scene from Dr Zhivago. The Ronja is fabulously warm, with its fur-trimmed hood, waterproof taped seams and useful pockets that keep your phone, purse and lip-balm dry and secure without feeling weighty. But more than this, it looks simply stunning. didriksons.com

SPRAYWAY SIRI GTX JACKET £170 It’s hard to think of a waterproof that hides its technical wizardry more smartly than the Siri. Ideal for shopping, meeting for coffee or casual walking, the Siri is Gore-Tex lined and thus reliably waterproof and windproof. Meanwhile, the collar buttons and elegant belt give it a high fashion kick. Its length means it helps keep your legs warm and dry too. sprayway.com

PÁRAMO ANDINA JACKET £220 The Andina is a technical mountain jacket with just enough fashionable trimmings to work in town, especially if you cycle to work or have to face the school run. The soft Analogy fabric feels amazing, and is fully breathable and waterproof. It’s also very feminine: the hip-shape is lovely and the hood is uniquely arched to look after long hair. paramo.co.uk

EIDER ORGEVAL PARKA £300 The Orgeval is the most expensive product in our list, so an aspirational purchase perhaps – but no apologies for including it, because it’s lush. It comes right down to mid-thigh, so it’s not for high-mountain walks. But for any other kind of walk, from country park to little hill, and for street life in winter, this sleek, shiny and very feminine insulated coat is probably the warmest and cosiest thing you’ll ever wear. eider.com

QUBA X600 JACKET £200 Quba are a British brand known for their nautical heritage, so the X600 is brilliant at coping with water and wind. Waterproof nylon and taped seams make it pretty much impregnable, while the Lycra inner sleeves and handwarmer pockets are very welcome on a roaring clifftop. quba.com

THE NORTH FACE COOKE DOWN SHIRT £220 The Cooke is a down jacket with the styling cues of a collared shirt. It’s thick and puffy, and its 550-fill down makes it so toasty you might want to live in it. Great for a cold winter walk, while the grainy-grey face fabric, sharp shoulders and casual collar give it superb urban kudos too. thenorthface.co.uk

FJÄLLRÄVEN GREENLAND PARKA £275 The Greenland’s generous length helps to lock in warmth and means you can dispense with the waterproof overtrousers. Not for scrambly mountains, but unbeatable in field, forest and moorland, and in the city too. Acres of storage, toasty insulation and fabric that can be waxed for waterproofing: this is something special. fjallraven.co.uk

TROUSERS

Legwear for the great adventure from city centre to mountain summit. ROYAL ROBBINS DISCOVERY CAPRI PANTS £45 Improbably named after the American chap who founded the company, Royal Robbins make a whole range of trousers under the Discovery mini-marque. We’ve chosen the Capris, as they’re great for chilling on milder days but also for walking in warmer climes – especially if you’re chasing winter sun. They’re light, airy and stretchy, and dry out quickly after a soaking. royalrobbins.co.uk

SHERPA NAULO PANT £80 Finding technical walking trousers that you can get away with in civilised company is a bit of an art, but the Naulos get it spot-on. There are some colourful flashes here and there, but mostly they are subtle enough to blend in. And on a hill, they are magnificent: a robust but comfortable blend of nylon and Spandex that is water-resistant and windproof. They’re sculpted at hip, crotch and knee so the fit is superb, and highly adjustable as well. sherpaadventuregear.com

CRAGHOPPERS COOPER CHINOS £50 Craghoppers are masters of the crossover market, and that’s especially true of their trousers. They really know how to make rugged outdoor trousers that are acceptable socially. The Coopers are functional trousers with articulated knees and SolarShield zinc-oxide sun protection that look just like regular, casual chinos. No flashy zips, no tapering around the ankle, just comfortable, casual-looking trousers you’d be happy to wear anywhere. craghoppers.com

ROHAN VENTURE JEANS £75 While Craghoppers make outdoor chinos, Rohan go one better and make outdoor jeans. They’ve cleverly faked denim (the world’s worst outdoor fabric) using a mix of polyamide and elastane, meaning they look like canvas but are far more durable, stretchy and wind-resistant. There’s a sun-protection treatment in the mix, too. Ditch the Levi's, you can live and walk in these. rohan.co.uk

TRAVEL KIT Go from metro to mountain to departure lounge in style…

AQUAPAC UPANO DUFFEL £110 The 70L Upano is a gigantic (and very clever) sack. It’s so huge, you can stuff everything in it without worrying about packing neatly (always good at the end of a camping trip or when making an early start on a trail), and it’s completely waterproof. It closes with a roll-top and Velcro, and there’s a clever valve which releases trapped air, compressing the whole bag to exactly the size of its contents. If your trip involves water hazards of any kind, this is the suitcase you need. It also comes in 40L (£100) and 90L (£120) versions. aquapac.net

MAMMUT TASCH POUCH £18 The evolution of this handy pack happened when someone finally looked at a handbag and thought: “Hmm, maybe we could make an outdoor version of that.” Small wonder that it should be the innovators at Mammut, and here is the outdoor mini-bag. Perfect for everything from passport and boarding card to lipstick and phone, and for that precious toy that Junior can’t leave home without (but then discards at the airport). We know. We’ve been there. Thanks, Mammut. mammut.ch

OSPREY SOJOURN £180 The Sojourn is the ultimate walker’s suitcase. It’s hugely capacious, but if you haven’t got a full load, the side walls fold down to compress the pack to a much smaller size. The pull-handle and wheels are sturdy but light, and when you unzip the bottom, out pops a harness, turning it into a rucksack. Genius. This is the 80L; it also comes in 60L (£170). ospreypacks.com

THE NORTH FACE MASEN ADVENTURE DUFFEL £75 A subtle, sophisticated 30L holdall which is perfect as cabin baggage or for a weekend away. The material is water-repellent waxed nylon canvas, with retro suede trims which look and feel a bit gorgeous. Likely to last for ages and still be fashionable in a decade’s time. thenorthface. co.uk

PATAGONIA IRONWOOD DAY-PACK £40

LIFEVENTURE DRISTORE WALLET £13

A really simple 20L carry-on backpack to use as cabin baggage, the Ironwood is based on an original design by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard. It has a padded sleeve and strap to hold your laptop, but otherwise it’s a simple, robust and fuss-free bag that just happens to ooze with the heritage of a great brand. patagonia.com

Most sane people run in fear at the word bumbag, but don’t confuse this subtle, slimline security pouch with the great bulging hip-clingers of the Nineties. The DriStore wallet is highly water-resistant and hides easily beneath a shirt or jacket to stow your wallet, purse, cards, travel documents and other small valuables. lifeventure.co.uk

ACCESSORIES

From basics to luxuries: tools of the trade for the urban-outdoor adventurer. PLATYPUS SOFTBOTTLE £8

LIFESYSTEMS POCKET FIRST AID KIT £10.50

It’s all very well carrying a bottle of Evian around town or a Sigg bottle in the country. But a compressible soft bottle works for both, is lighter than either, and hides neatly out of sight. It’s also greener than buying a dozen Evian bottles throughout the month. With the Softbottle, there’s no nasty plastic taste, it’s dishwasher safe, and the manufacturing is eco-friendly. Best of all, it says you’re an outdoor person without screaming it. cascadedesigns.com

Small enough to fit into the Mammut Tasch Pouch (see P.18), the Pocket First Aid kit includes all the basics. So whether you’re up a mountain with a blister, or in a town centre with your youngest who’s just gouged their elbow plunging off an ornamental planter, you’re sorted. lifesystems.co.uk

BRUNTON POWER KNIFE £20

SHERPA RIMJHIM HAT £25

It's not a charger itself, but the Power Knife connects anything to anything. So it’s for all those times when you’re missing the vital adaptor that will help you charge your phone, laptop or GPS. Its four talons include a regular USB, a mini-USB and the two most commonly used Apple connectors. bruntoneurope.com

If you love trawling shabby-chic outlets for your urbanwear, you will love the Rimjhim. Created by Sherpa’s Nepalese seamstresses from the offcuts of wool used in making the brand’s more premium gear items, it's bang on trend. Warm, cosy and eye-catchingly unique, it could have come from Camden Market. sherpaadventuregear.com

OAKLEY RADAR PATH SHADES £175

CANADA GOOSE CLASSIQUE SHEARLING HAT £175

Here’s a great compromise between mountain shades (which look too technical for town) and urban shades (which are too flimsy for Highland snowfields). A 2014 twist on an Eighties design, they have all the sturdiness and UV protection of outdoor shades, but are subtle enough to look great in town, too. uk.oakley.com

Yes, we can hear you yelling “One hundred and seventy-five pounds for a hat?!” And yes, this is firmly in the luxury category. But what a hat: incredibly warm yet perfectly breathable, and so chic you could wear it in on a wintry day in Paris and on top of a Cairngorm the following week. canada-goose.com
