Back to Basics Liverpool – The University City Civic Place Opening A Letter From Your Mayor In this issue Liverpool –The University City Historic Signing of MOU with UNSW AUTUMN 2024
Did you know Liverpool City Council looks after hectares of sports fields, open spaces, reserves, and gardens? That is a big job.
At the start of 2024, we got hit with some heavy summer rain, which made our parks and sports grounds super green and lush. But it also messed up our mowing and maintenance plans.
Our Council teams have been working hard to keep up with the mowing, gardening, and sports field upkeep.
But, we’re always on the lookout for better ways to do things. So, we’re trying out a new idea: splitting the city into zones for maintenance.
Teams are now working together to tackle different suburbs/areas each week, making sure they’re in tip-top shape. And don’t worry, we’ll keep you updated on where we’re working each week. Visit Council’s website and social media for more.
This trial is expected to last three months where we will review the impact of this initiative.
Civic Place Opened by Prime Minister
Our magnificent new building Civic Place at 50 Scott Street is now open and operating.
Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun was joined by the Prime Minister the Hon. Anthony Albanese to officially open the building in a packed ceremony in the forecourt of the building.
The Prime Minister and the mayor unveiled a plaque before a ribbon cutting with the local councillors and the Council CEO to declare the building officially open.
“This is an exciting time for Liverpool and the City Council,” the mayor said.
“This building is a vote of confidence by the Council in the future of Liverpool, and an investment that reinforces its commitment as Australia’s next global city,” Mr Mannoun said.
The Prime Minister said Liverpool is at the centre of Western Sydney growth and the community has a great past, a good present, and an even better future.
“Liverpool Civic Place is a fantastic gift to this wonderful community,” the Prime Minister said.

A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR
Over the last 15 years we have been working to make Liverpool into a University City and now we can finally say *we have*!
With the signing of our MOU with UNSW, Liverpool has cemented itself as the home of education and research. When you add the Universities to Liverpool Hospital and the Ingham Institute, our community now has all the right ingredients that will ensure the current and future residents of Liverpool have the best opportunities possible. This will lead to more jobs in Liverpool and that means more opportunities for you and less traveling everyday.
It’s important our city has a purpose and is known for the right things.
We now aim to be leaders in the fields of health and education. This won’t happen overnight and that’s why we need to not only deliver for our community today, but also plant the seeds and chart the course that future generations will benefit from.
UNSW, University of Wollongong, and Western Sydney University are now part of Liverpool’s present and future.
The Customer Service Centre at 33 Moore Street has moved to a new service hub at our new library Yellamundie –Lower Ground Floor, 52 Scott Street.
On another note, I would like to personally thank you for your patience as the CEO and his team work through the challenges our LGA faces.
We are in the process of preparing our budget for next year and are aiming to increase funding on the services you want and deserve. From park maintenance, roads, or footpaths, we are continuing to focus on the basics whilst shaving the $11m budget deficit we inherited from the previous Council. As our budget position improves, we will be able to deliver more for you. It’s important we keep on track fixing our financial position, so you get the best value from your rates.
The budget will be on exhibition in May/June and we would really like your feedback.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the volunteers and emergency workers who do so much for our community. In particular on behalf of all of us I would like to thank the SES and RFS who have again helped us with the flooding that we have had. We have now had four floods in the last two years and they have done an amazing job keeping all of us safe.

Liverpool City Council signs MOU with UNSW
In a major coup for Liverpool Council, it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to foster a close working relationship between the two organisations.
Mayor Ned Mannoun was joined by UNSW’s Dean of Arts, Design & Architecture, Professor Claire Annesley, at a ceremony at Council’s chambers where they signed the agreement.
The agreement will result in Council and UNSW partnering on various projects and exchanging information.
UNSW has a strong, established presence in the south-west for more than 35 years.
The two organisations aim to collaborate and co-operate to drive positive socio-economic development and community well-being through collaborative research, education and locally based initiatives.
UNSW is a member of the Liverpool Innovation Precinct, anchored around the NSW Government’s $790 million expansion of Liverpool Hospital.

Liverpool – The University City
Liverpool’s reputation as a University City has been enhanced by the signing of the MOU.
Liverpool is one of the few cities in Australia and the world to have three Universities in its CBD.
We are fortunate to have Western Sydney University (WSU) and the University of Wollongong (UOW) within walking distance of each other and both are close to the major transport hubs.
Liverpool is fast becoming the destination of choice for a University education with the student population expected to increase from the current population of 9,000 in 2024 to 50,000 by 2050.
Liverpool has witnessed a demographic shift towards a more educated and professional population where a young dynamic workforce is emerging, driven by an eagerness to contribute meaningfully to their community and secure their future in south-western Sydney.
Figures show between 2011 and 2021, university attendance among Liverpool residents surged by 70%, from 6,616 to 11,253.
In 2021, 20.1% of the Liverpool LGA’s population (36,588 people) held a bachelor’s degree, compared to 15.7% (24,888) in 2016.
With the Liverpool Innovation Precinct, which is a unique partnership of 10 major stakeholders in the City of Liverpool who have come together to advocate for and support public and private sector investment in the LGA, Liverpool is truly a hub of educational excellence.
