A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR A happy new year to everyone. We’re working to ensure 2024 is a continuing success story for Liverpool highlighted by the opening of the distinctive Yellamundie library and gallery, plus the opening of Civic Place. These two adjacent buildings in Scott Street in the CBD are a proud and constant reminder of Liverpool’s increasing profile as a sophisticated 21st century city that will soon boast NSW’s newest and most modern international airport. This year will be another busy one with Council focusing on improving the momentum of our back-to-basics programs of building and improving our services to the community, including our front-line services. This year’s projects include: •
Continuing to upgrade Light Horse Park and incorporate its aquatic surrounds into recreational facilities;
•
osting our popular cultural events again, H headed by Starry Sari Nights and Most Blessed Nights, both of which drew record crowds last year;
•
Ensuring Yellamundie has the resources to meet the needs of the thousands of residents using its services each week;
•
Putting masterplans for the redevelopment of Scott Memorial Park and Craik Park at Austral before Council this month (February) and stage one work to be delivered mid2024, and
•
Monitoring Council spending to ensure we continue to move back into the black.
Mayor Ned Mannoun

Yellamundie − a novel twist Books are flying off the shelves at Liverpool’s stylish new library, Yellamundie as the community embraces the vast range of educational, informative, fiction and non-fiction material available with 100,000 items on 2.3km of shelves on six levels. The library’s distinctive shape, with its cleverly designed porthole windows allowing maximum use of natural light, and prominent position at 52 Scott Street in the CBD, has captured public imagination – and the attention of other councils. An area dubbed the Create Space has been fitted out with a range of technology to support STEM and robotics education classes for children and adults, as well as facilitate content creation through providing video and podcasting equipment.

Liverpool Council’s manager of Library and Museum Services, Elysa Dennis said Yellamundie, an indigenous term for storyteller, is drawing thousands of visitors each week. ‘Our school holiday program was a hit with booked out sessions in drumming, Bollywood dancing, robotics and songwriting. But you can still join our regular Saturday Storytime,” she said. “Saturday Storytimes run all year at Yellamundie from 10.30am offering stories and craft for children aged 1-7 years. They’ll continue all year in school terms and school holidays, and are great for working parents. “Adults appreciate the vast array of material on offer and they love the new building and all the beautiful spaces. This place has so much to offer and library membership is free.”

Liverpool City Council’s mattress muncher nicknamed The Croc, in action munching some of Liverpool’s discarded mattresses.
The Croc biting down on council costs Liverpool’s mattress muncher, the Crocodile has lived up to its fearsome reputation by shredding 250 mattresses discarded by ratepayers since it began operating late last year. There is no charge for Liverpool ratepayers using the Crocodile to get rid of an estimated 20,000 mattresses discarded locally each year. The machine’s performance, and its cost saving benefits to the community, will increase this year as its operation becomes more streamlined plus, negotiations are continuing to lease out the Croc to shred mattresses from other councils. 6
