ANZAC DAY

This year’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service begins with a march from Club Liverpool to Macquarie Mall, starting at 5.15am, on 25 April 2017. The Dawn Service begins at 5.30am and is followed by breakfast at Club Liverpool. Everyone is welcome to come to commemorate the ANZACs and all who have served in our armed services since then.

CHILDREN’S PARLIAMENT LAUNCHED The launch of the 2168 Children’s Parliament on 28 February began a new era in Liverpool City Council’s engagement with young people in the area. Aimed at children aged eight to 12, the parliament gives children who go to primary school in the 2168 postcode a chance to debate issues of local and global significance while learning how Australia’s political system works. “We’re extremely proud of all the students taking part in the parliament,” Mayor Wendy Waller said. “They should be very proud of themselves for achieving this milestone so early in life.

ADOPT A FRIEND FROM LIVERPOOL ANIMAL SHELTER Liverpool City Council took over what was formerly Renbury Farm late last year under a two year lease agreement, adopting a no kill policy for the shelter.

Forty children democratically elected by their peers will hold quarterly meetings at the Liverpool City Council Chambers. “As part of the Council’s Strong Children and Communities Project, the parliament is to give children from one of our most disadvantaged suburbs a voice. “The 2168 Parliament is an Australian first, and we at Liverpool City Council are proud to lead the way when it comes to listening to young people in our city. Funding for the parliament came from the Department of Social Services and its facilitating partner Mission Australia.

OUR HOME, LIVERPOOL 2027

Liverpool residents have a chance to have their say on a plan that identifies the community’s main priorities and aspirations for the next 10 years.

COMMUNITY STRATEGIC PLAN

Liverpool’s draft Community Strategic Plan – Our Home, Liverpool 2027 – will be on public exhibition until 5pm on Wednesday, 29 March. Mayor Wendy Waller said more than 1500 community members had provided input into the plan through an online survey, activities at the rural and urban forums, council committees and opportunities at major events throughout 2016. The plan includes strategies for achieving the community’s priorities, and categorises them into four directions: creating connection; strengthening and protecting our environment; generating opportunity; and, leading through collaboration. “These directions relate directly to a quadruple-

bottom line approach, which encourages us to look at the social, environmental, economic and civic leadership outcomes of any given decision,” Mayor Waller said. Each of the four directions identifies what the community wants, what Liverpool City Council will do and how the community can help achieve those goals. “The Community Strategic Plan is a whole-ofcommunity document,” Mayor Waller said. “While Council creates the plan on behalf of the community, all levels of government and community are responsible for working towards the goals. “Many hours of consultation have gone into this plan to ensure it reflects community priorities. Now is your opportunity to have your say on the draft.” To comment on the plan go to: listens.liverpool.nsw.gov.au/ on-public-exhibition-community-strategic-plan

The hum of conversation peppered with plenty of laughter and even a few tears filled Liverpool City Library on 8 March for International Women’s Day. Mayor Wendy Waller announced Council’s new Women in Business initiative, aimed at helping women begin, build and broaden their businesses.

“Council is committed to supporting local women on every step of their business journey, from initial concept to expansion,” she said. “We are proud to encourage entrepreneurship, and have made it a priority to support local jobs for local women. “The Women in Business program that we are launching today aims to build on these past initiatives and provide a comprehensive service to help local women begin, build or broaden their business. “The program includes specific services that will assist women who may face challenges getting started, including single mothers and those from culturally diverse backgrounds. Up and coming performers from The Street University, including dance crew Zealous, got things started with hip-hop and spoken word performances. Emotions ran high in the spoken word workshop, where women were encouraged to write their stream of consciousness, which resulted in plenty of laughter and a few tears. The event finished with a performance by international dance star Pepa Molina and her fiery Flamenco Dance Company.
