AUTUMN 2019
HAVE YOUR SAY ON LIVERPOOL’S FUTURE Liverpool’s rapid growth in recent years has created many opportunities, with new businesses bringing jobs closer to home for many residents. Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said this year Council is taking a close look at the planning controls that will guide the next chapter of our City’s development. “For residents, the review of the Liverpool Local Environmental Plan 2008 is a fantastic opportunity to have their say on how the city and suburbs can provide the best housing, jobs and open space,” Mayor Waller said. “We want people to tell us what they like about their suburb and what could make it even better. “We are also looking to develop a long-term strategic vision for the next 30 years, called Connected Liverpool 2050. “Throughout 2019, Council will reach out to residents to hear their aspirations for their suburb and their community.” For more information and surveys, visit listens.liverpool.nsw.gov.au “We encourage as many people as possible to have their say,” Mayor Waller said.
HIGHER CALLING TO EXCEL Prestons resident Noor Ibrahim is a young woman going places – straight to the top of the state in Personal Development Health and Physical Education in the Higher School Certificate, with an ATAR of 99.95. Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller recently congratulated Noor on her
achievement and wished her well as she embarks on a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Sydney. Noor, who attended Alpha Omega Senior College in Auburn, was recognised along with other local HSC high achievers at the Council meeting on 26 February. Photo: Mayor Wendy Waller

PHILLIPS PARK GETS $13M BOOST The planned revamp of Phillips Park in Lurnea has received a massive boost with a $13 million grant from the Western Parkland City Liveability Program. The grant will fund most of the $16.2 million redevelopment to provide a new café, recreation centre, sports fields, walking tracks and a playground. “We want to see Phillips Park become the beating heart of Lurnea where people from all backgrounds and their families come to meet, socialise, play sport and relax,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.
After thousands of years hidden in the earth, Aboriginal artefacts have found a new home at Carnes Hill Library. The artefacts are thought to be 4000-8000 years old and were uncovered during excavation for the Carnes Hill Community and Recreation Centre.
Work to prepare for construction of the park redevelopment will begin shortly.
The Pride of Place exhibition also includes replica tools made by archaeologist Mathew Smith based on those made by local Aboriginal communities. Local Indigenous groups including the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council and the Darug Custodian Aboriginal Corporation helped provide critical information about how the stone tools were used.

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE, JOY JOY JOY! Flags waved, kebabs sizzled and fireworks blasted into the night sky as thousands flocked to Liverpool City Council’s Australia Day event at Woodward Park. “Australia Day is a cherished celebration for all residents including the thousands of migrants and refugees who have come to call Liverpool home,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said. “We highlight our city’s multicultural fabric in all of our celebrations, however Australia Day remains the premier opportunity to celebrate diversity as our greatest strength.” Food was again a star of the show, with keen eaters feasting on delights from all over the world along with a cooking demonstration from My Kitchen Rules.
MAKING LIVERPOOL A BETTER PLACE Nine local heroes were honoured for their outstanding contributions to the community at Liverpool City Council’s annual Australia Day Awards. Liverpool’s 2019 Citizen of the Year was awarded to community champion Kerrie Oxlade.
