LIFE WINTER 2017
WESTERN SYDNEY AIRPORT TO CREATE 31,000 JOBS Liverpool residents can expect job opportunities at Western Sydney Airport to take off long before the first planes start using the runway in 2026. The Federal Government is set to begin work on the new airport at Badgerys Creek in 2018, at a cost of $5.3 billion. The construction phase is expected to create more than 11,000 jobs. But that’s just the start
of the opportunities. A new business park will be established in the area several years before the airport is finished and this is expected to create 4400 jobs. When the airport opens in 2026 the Government predicts 8700 staff will be required, with a further 6600 ‘off-airport’ jobs to be created nearby.
We are very encouraged by the opportunities we see for local businesses and residents to benefit from the airport’s construction and operation -

LIVERPOOL ANIMAL SHELTER HELPS RE-HOME STRAY CATS AND DOGS More than 400 people came to the launch of the revamped Liverpool Animal Shelter at Austral. Council took over what was formerly Renbury Farm late last year, adopting a no-kill policy for the shelter. We are really proud of the work staff have done since Council took over the management of the shelter last year, and this was our chance to showcase it to the community, said Mayor Waller.

“It was also a great chance to show people how adoption works – every one went home knowing that the next time they want to bring a new pet into their family, they can adopt from the Liverpool Animal Shelter.”

COUNCIL APPEALS MOOREBANK RECYCLING PLANT APPROVAL Liverpool’s Councillors are united in opposition against the Moorebank Concrete Recycling Plant and have been working with residents for many years to prevent it coming to the area. Moorebank Recyclers Pty Ltd sought approval from the NSW State Government to operate a concrete recycling facility on the banks of the Georges River.
Mayor Wendy Waller with members of the Moorebank Residents’ Action Group.
The New South Wales Land and Environment Court approved the development but Liverpool City Council stands by its belief that it is the wrong way to use the site and will appeal the decision.
Council recognises the long campaign by residents and encourages anyone who has concerns about the plant to share their thoughts by contacting the NSW Planning Minister Anthony Roberts.
Liverpool’s oldest cemetery, the Pioneers’ Memorial Park, has been revitalised with new signage and a new, more interactive website.
Liverpool’s first Mayor. The cemetery was closed for burials in 1958, but was reopened as a park by Mayor Wendy Waller in 2010.
The Pioneers’ Memorial Park, which is opposite Westfield in Liverpool, is the resting place of more than 13,000 people, including early pioneers of Liverpool such as the Reverend Robert Cartwright, the first Minister of St Luke’s Church, and Richard Sadlier,
The new website, www. liverpoolpioneersmemorialpark. com.au, offers a more interactive experience and has a search function for people who want to research the history of those buried at the cemetery.
CELEBRATE ABORIGINAL ACHIEVEMENTS DURING NAIDOC WEEK 2017 Residents are invited to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture by coming to three NAIDOC Week events – a street march in Liverpool on 3 July, a family fun day in Miller on 4 July and a corroboree at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre on 6 July. The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week is ‘Our Languages Matter’, which emphasises the essential role that Indigenous languages play in Aboriginal cultural identity. “Indigenous languages are a key part of Aboriginal life – their stories and songs keep
their history alive and link them to the many sacred places on the land,” said Mayor Waller. “Liverpool City Council welcomes the sharing of the heritage, knowledge and culture of the Aboriginal peoples and recognises their rightful position as custodians of this land. “Council has adopted the Reconciliation Action Plan 2016-2020, which is a positive step forward in building respect and promoting social inclusion and equality.”
BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION SEMINAR CONNECTS WITH STUDENTS Students from high schools across Liverpool learned about careers in the building and construction industry from local leaders at Miller TAFE recently. This was the second seminar in Liverpool City Council’s Making the Connection series. The first focused on Transport and Logistics and Council plans to focus on health and education at its next seminar. Liverpool City Council Infrastructure and Environment director Raj Autar, Terra Civil managing director Emilio Spinozzi and Masterton Homes design manager Anthony Campanale told the students about how their careers started and outlined some of the opportunities in their industry.
Mayor Waller launches ‘Making the Connection’ at Miller TAFE.
Mr Campanale spoke about the wide range of opportunities available in the building and construction industry, urging his young audience to grab any opportunity that came their way. “If a job comes up, just take it because it gives you experience,” he said. “Once you’re in the industry there’s a whole lot of places you can go. Start running, you’ll find your feet.”

NETBALL COURTS AT WOODWARD PARK UPGRADED Hundreds of netballers are enjoying the upgraded netball courts at Woodward Park, Liverpool. Due to the uneven surface of the courts, water was pooling on the surface at some locations. To address this issue, the netball courts were completely resurfaced with new pavement markings, new court rings and re-turfing.
Each Forum is hosted by a Liverpool Councillor acting as chairperson and light refreshments will be provided. They are a great opportunity for residents to participate in communityled projects, share their ideas to help solve local issues and hear about Council’s services and operations. Before

LIVERPOOL CHARITY BALL – GET YOUR TICKETS NOW
LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL
Charity Ball 2017 Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of Liverpool’s premier black-tie event! This year’s Liverpool Charity Ball will be held on 26 August at Liverpool Catholic Club and will feature Wendy Harmer as MC on the night. Not only is Wendy the host of ABC Radio’s Morning Show, but she is also a children’s writer, playwright and one of Australia’s best-loved comedians.
Join Wendy Harmer and guests for the Liverpool Charity Ball.
Liverpool Hospital has been selected as this year’s beneficiary and funds raised at the ball will be used to build a healing garden in the hospital grounds. As well
as serving as a beautiful entrance to the hospital, it will provide a natural space for patients and their friends and relatives to take a break from the bustling clinical spaces inside the hospital. Last year, we were able to help the Hospital purchase an ultrasound machine for its intensive care unit. With the help of this machine, they can examine and diagnose more than 200 trauma patients a year. Tickets are $135 per person at http://www.liverpool.nsw.gov.au/ liverpoolcharityball

COUNCIL COMMITTED TO DISABILITY INCLUSION Local government plays an important role in disability inclusion and Liverpool City Council is working towards creating a diverse community that is respectful and accessible to everyone. The Liverpool City Council Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 – 2021 is designed to provide equal opportunities to everyone, regardless of their background, abilities or lifestyle. The plan includes practical ways to make our community more inclusive, such as upgrading Council facilities, improving accessibility, updating a mobility map of Liverpool and providing inclusive guidelines for event organisers. It will help to develop positive community attitudes and behaviours regarding people with disability,
create liveable communities, support access to employment and improve access to services. Inclusion benefits everyone, not just those with disability, their carers, friends and family. By making Liverpool more inclusive, we also make it a stronger, fairer and a better place to live. Sean Langhsaw, CEO of Disability South West at Green Valley, said things are a lot better than they used to be for people with disability. “We’ve been in the Liverpool area since 1981 and we have seen a lot of positive changes since then,” he said. “The new Macquarie Mall is a lot more accessible than the old mall, which had too many obstacles for people in wheelchairs.
“The Liverpool Access Committee has been really helpful too, especially with regards to producing a mobility map for the area. “But we still struggle with public transport – we need more fully accessible buses and trains so we don’t have to ask for a ramp every time we want to get on and off. “At the end of the day, people with disability just want to be treated like every other citizen. They don’t want to be treated like special people, but like normal people with special needs.”
