The season began with Beethoven, with the Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko performing all of Beethoven’s nine symphonies to capacity audiences and great acclaim.

‘How did Vasily Petrenko’s 11th season with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic begin? With rolling thunder from the orchestra’s new acquisition, a set of baroque timpani. The orchestra’s timpanist, Graham Johns, soon stretched his muscles, puncturing the air during Beethoven’s first three symphonies — the start of a complete cycle in four chronological instalments spread over ten days. “Enjoy the revolution,” Petrenko said before lifting his baton for the Eroica. ‘Beethoven, Berlioz and the Beatles are the big hitters in Liverpool Philharmonic’s new season. So far it’s been Beethoven who has taken centre stage. If some audience members at Hope Street had a Ludwig loyalty card, they’d be within sight of a full house and a free symphony. VASILY PETRENKO AND THE ROYAL LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Celebrate their 10-Year Musical Partnership On 7 July, a special concert celebrated Vasily Petrenko’s ten years at the helm of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the internationally acclaimed musical partnership that they have forged together in concerts, recordings and broadcasts. And it was also the Maestro’s 40th birthday!
The concert programme touched on musical highlights of their partnership so far, featuring Elgar’s In the South, Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1 with Truls Mørk and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.3. At the end of the concert, Vasily was joined on stage by his family, accompanied by a rousing rendition played by the Orchestra of Happy Birthday! Vasily said: ‘It’s been a hugely enjoyable ten years for me in the great city of Liverpool with our fantastic musicians, audiences and supporters.’

Playing for Liverpool… On Tour French star pianist Alexandre Tharaud plays the blockbuster Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 in two thrilling concerts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko in Liverpool (20 & 23 October). They‘ll perform together again in an allRachmaninov programme on 26 November at the brand new Philharmonie concert hall in Paris. The Orchestra and Tharaud’s new recording of the Rach 2, along with other works by the composer goes on release on 21 October (Warner).
The charismatic cellist Kian Soltani plays Elgar’s hugely popular Cello Concerto in Liverpool with Petrenko and the Orchestra (24 November). They’ll make a four-concert date tour to Italy and Slovenia in February in concerts that include the Elgar, with Britten’s Four Sea Interludes and Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances.

A Celebration!
Classic FM with whom Liverpool Philharmonic has enjoyed an award-winning partnership with the UK’s biggest classical music brand since 2001, marked the Orchestra and Petrenko’s 10-year anniversary throughout the 7 July with a selection of their recordings made together since 2006; followed by a week of concerts and recordings broadcasts on the station’s The Full Works, presented Jane Jones and Catherine Bott.
‘The hall’s acoustic blushed in all the right places: tuttis were terrifying, horns and brass burnished and percussion (significantly bass drum and timpani) thrilling but not booming. A standing ovation was given by a rapturous full house: lasting the best part of five minutes, it was most warmly deserved and a sign that, a decade on, Liverpool's affection for their adopted Russian son shows no sign of abating.’

To be part of the world’s biggest classical music festival is always a special occasion and reviews were fantastic for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s BBC Prom under the baton of our Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko, their fifth appearance together there since 2008. Prom 53 included the world premiere of Liverpoolborn composer Emily Howard’s Torus: Concerto for Orchestra, which can be heard again in Liverpool on 19 January and signature Russian repertoire for which together, Petrenko and Liverpool Philharmonic have achieved international critical acclaim for their interpretations; Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1 for which the 25-year old
Russian cellist Alexey Stadler stepped in on the day to replace Truls Mørk who withdrew due to illness, and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.3. ‘Liverpool Philharmonic shone under Petrenko’s baton in an account of Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony that displayed its blend of glamour and nostalgia.’

SUPER CLUB CREAM MEETS LIVERPOOL’S SUPER ORCHESTRA!
In a first collaboration with Liverpool’s iconic club Cream, this unique concert, a first for the city, saw a night of Cream’s classic dance music anthems from the last two decades as they’d never been heard before, performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and guest vocalists in the stunning setting of Liverpool Cathedral.

MUSIC ROOM IS 1! Award for Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
Liverpool Philharmonic was awarded the Entertainment Venue of the Year Award in the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards winning against stiff competition in a shortlist that included Sefton Park Palm House, St. Helens Theatre Royal and Circo.
Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room opened on 9 October 2015, as part of the £14.5million refurbishment of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Since opening, Music Room has quickly become a central part of Liverpool’s musical life. By the venue’s first anniversary this year the venue will have presented a wide ranging programme of more than 160 events including folk, roots, jazz classical and contemporary music, comedy and spoken word, workshops, tours and corporate events.

IN HARMONY LIVERPOOL Happy 8th Birthday!
Young musicians of In Harmony Liverpool took to the stage at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall alongside musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for the now annual concert celebrating Liverpool Philharmonic’s ground-breaking project in Everton and the success and musical achievements of our young musicians. A close to capacity audience for the concert included families and representatives from Everton, and schoolchildren from schools in Liverpool and across the North West and invited guests.

One of six national In Harmony programmes, In Harmony Liverpool was established in 2009 at Faith Primary School in Everton. From initially working with 84 children in its first year, In Harmony Liverpool now has a weekly reach to 720 children aged 0-18 and their families in 2016, all taking part in orchestral music-making of the highest quality every week, free of charge, in and out of school.
Whilst the Labour Party Conference was in Liverpool during September, Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn MP and Steve Rotheram MP visited In Harmony Liverpool at Faith Primary in Everton. They enjoyed a short performance by Year 6 pupils before having a go at playing in the orchestra themselves, coached by tenyear-olds Jessica Kelly (violin) and Billy Melia (cello).

Liverpool Philharmonic has been awarded a total of £329,000 by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to further expand our transformative In Harmony Liverpool programme in Everton from its current reach of over 720 young people aged 0-18 to 1,000 by 2020. Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s new commitment builds on their previous investment for In Harmony Liverpool between 2012-2015 with the Foundation now a major investor in the programme, alongside Arts Council England and the Department for Education.

LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC YOUTH COMPANY INVESTING IN TALENT
Aiming to open up the world of music to talented young people in our youth ensembles, Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company provides a wide range of exciting experiences led by industry professionals to enable our young musicians to develop a broad portfolio of creative, performance and leadership skills that reflect the industry we work in. This year, Youth Company members have benefitted from working with composition mentors and musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and in concerts as members of Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Youth Choir. They have also taken part in masterclasses, Big Band and new music workshops, chamber ensembles, supported concert visits and an industry day showcasing careers in the music industry.
22-year-old Richard Williams is the winner of our second annual Christopher Brooks Composition Prize in association with The Rushworth Foundation.
Richard will be able to develop his composition talent, access mentoring and guidance from leading artists and music industry professionals associated with Liverpool Philharmonic, and write a new work for performance by Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra musicians which will be premiered in autumn 2017. He receives a cash prize of £1,000 thanks to the support, for a second year, of the Lancashire Sinfonietta Legacy Fund and The Rushworth Foundation and the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors (BASCA) has provided a year’s complimentary membership.
24-year-old Bethan MorganWilliams, winner of the first annual Christopher Brooks Composition Prize, will see her new work, Mirages of Pisa premiered in concert by Ensemble 10/10, Liverpool Philharmonic’s contemporary music group, on Wednesday, 28 October in Liverpool’s St. George’s Hall Concert Room.
In an associated project, four members of Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company have been selected for support through the second Rushworth Young Composers Scheme for 14-18-year-olds which will enable them to discover their creative and musical voice outside of school or exam based environment. Yasmin Al-Zuhairi (aged 14), sings in Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir and is a cellist in the Youth Orchestra; Joshua Quinlan (aged 16) plays clarinet in the Youth Orchestra and Bethany Jackson (aged 15) sings in the Youth Choir. They will have access to mentoring and master classes from professional composers and musicians; and have their work performed by young musicians in the Music Room.

Liverpool Philharmonic’s Musician in Residence programme with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust brings live music performance and practical music-making sessions to aid the recovery of adults of all ages suffering from mental illness, including individuals with conditions such as brain injuries, dementia, learning disabilities and substance abuse.

The programme has been running for more than eight years, expanding from two sites to now working across eighteen Mersey Care sites with local and secure services, and a growing community-based programme. In 2015/16 our team, including musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, delivered sessions to
2,282 services users within inpatient and community settings, across a wide geographical area of the Liverpool city region, with the programme benefiting more than 10,000 service users since 2008.
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra viola player Rachel Jones is one of our eight lead musicians on the Musician in Residence programme and has been working with service users for five years.
Highlighting the importance of speaking out about mental illness, Liverpool Philharmonic was delighted to support this year’s The Big Brew campaign, created by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust.
Says Rachel: ‘One of the most memorable sessions I’ve had was working with someone who has been in and out of (Mersey Care) services for close to 40 years. I had gone to the session with another member of our Orchestra, and we ended up playing a Beatles song. This
guy had decided he wanted to sing, he began to cry and he got quite emotional. It turned out the song had been played at his mum’s funeral but this inner emotion had never come out. He talked to me about the effect the music had on him and how it had helped him overcome his inner feelings of tension. He has been clean of substance abuse for three years now and is convinced that it’s down to whatever happened in that moment. I don’t think it gets much better than that.’
