Welcome to our Autumn/Winter Leap into Live Music! events, offering a fantastic range of performances for registered members. We are delighted to offer concerts over the Christmas period again this year. As they are so popular, we want to be able to offer as many tickets as possible, which means that there will be a small charge of £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s for these tickets.

This is a still a fantastic discounted rate of up to 70% and allows us to subsidise the cost of tickets to ensure as many people as possible benefit from live music in Liverpool.

If you’re not sure if a concert or performance will be suitable for you or your family please just get in touch and our team will be happy to advise.

We hope you like our latest brochure – if you have any comments please do let us know, we’d love to know what you think.

We look forward to seeing you at an event soon! Liz and Celia Leap into Live Music!

All tickets must be booked at least 1 week before the performance by sending an email to leap@liverpoolphil.com, by sending the attached booking form to Leap into Live Music! Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Hope Street, L1 9BP or by calling Liz on 0151 210 2946.

How the scheme works…

Leap into Live Music! is generously funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to enable Liverpool Philharmonic to offer free and discounted tickets for people to experience live music events. We offer a range of performances across Liverpool Philharmonic’s varied programme from orchestral performances to Rock ‘n’ Pop concerts.

What to do if you can’t make an event…

If you can’t make an event, we ask that you let us know as soon as you can. This will enable us to offer the tickets to other Leap members and make sure that the seats don’t go to waste. If you have a family emergency or something crops up last minute don’t worry, but we’d appreciate it if once things have settled down that you let us know. We are starting to implement a “three strikes” rule for members who consistently book, fail to attend and don’t let us know. This enables us to prioritise members who really want tickets. – To cancel: email leap@liverpoolphil.com, call Liz on 0151 210 2946 or call or text (make sure you give your name) 07834 790 760.

JAMES EHNES VIOLIN Tuesday 27 September 7.30pm St George’s Hall Concert Room – Bach Sonata No.1, Partita No.1, and Sonata No.3

The Canadian violinist James Ehnes has played in Liverpool several times, famously once very last minute when he stepped in without any rehearsal to play with the Orchestra for a live BBC Radio 3 concert!

We are delighted to have James back as our Artist in Residence, and we’re excited that our Chamber Music Series in St Georges Hall Concert Room begins with his solo performance of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas – some of the most sophisticated and yet piercingly beautiful music ever created for a bow and four strings. A KIND OF MAGIC Saturday 8 October 7.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall – Programme Includes: We Will Rock You, Don't Stop Me Now, A Kind Of Magic, We Are The Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody

Big, brash and fabulously larger than life, the music of Queen fuses glam rock, soul and huge lashings of grand opera as this sensational full orchestral spectacular with West End singers unleashes Queen’s greatest hits like you’ve never heard them before.

This year would have been Freddie Mercury’s 70th birthday so with 'Radio Ga Ga', 'Don’t Stop Me Now', 'Killer Queen', of course 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and many, many more what better way to celebrate the music of this great showman.

RAGGED UNION BLUEGRASS Sunday 9 October 8pm Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room –

Ragged Union’s hard-driving bluegrass, with a tinge of the traditional and a healthy dose of the blues, has become a firm favourite for quite a few music lovers since their inception a few years ago.

Not many folks have said it better than Ron Thomason, of old-time bluegrass stalwarts Dry Branch Fire Squad, who said, “This IS your grandfather’s bluegrass music but NOT his lyrics or subject matter. These tunes are ‘traditional’ in their approach and in RU’s presentation, but the subject matter of the lyrics is wholly modern”.

The band have performed at several major festivals in the US and this is one of just four UK dates.

MOZART’S CLARINET CONCERTO Friday 14 October 7.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall –

Berlioz Overture, Béatrice et Bénédict Mozart Clarinet Concerto Shostakovich Symphony No.5 Nicholas Collon conductor Benjamin Mellefont clarinet

Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony was written as an answer to Stalin at a time when one wrong note would have landed Shostakovich in the Gulag. It’s one of 20th-century music’s true epics, told in music of raw feeling. A powerful Liverpool debut for one of the UK’s most talkedabout young conductors Nicholas Collon – and a striking contrast to Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Concerto, played by our own Principal Clarinet Benjamin Mellefont.

LYNCHED Sunday 16 October 8pm Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room –

Lynched are a four-piece traditional folk group from Dublin, Ireland, who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar.

Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material. ‘The most convincing band to come out of Ireland for years!’ ***** The Guardian

MAZ O’CONNOR Wednesday 2 November 8pm Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room –

BBC Folk Award nominee Maz O’Connor is one of the most exciting young voices in British folk, and is quickly establishing herself as a bold and compelling songwriter.

Maz performs a mixture of traditional, re-worked folk songs and her own thoughtful, poetic compositions - accompanying herself on guitar, tenor guitar, piano and shruti box.

In this concert she is featuring her new album The Longing Kind, but this is no ordinary gig. The songs have been crafted into a show that invites the audience to join the musicians on a tour of longing, belonging, youth and identity. You'll have to be here to find out more... ‘Shadows, light and a touch of Joni Mitchell...Classy.’ **** The Guardian

Debussy Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No.2 Brahms Symphony No.3

Hindemith Concert Music for Brass and Strings Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 Dvořák Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’

“Free but happy” is the motto of Brahms’s Third Symphony, and from sweeping opening to majestic sunset of a finish, he never wrote anything more personal or poetic. It’s a long way from the silken sensuality of Debussy’s Prélude.

“Unequivocally brilliant” says one critic of the young Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. So there probably isn’t a pianist on earth right now better-equipped to bring out all the poetry of Chopin’s ardent First Concerto! Vasily Petrenko frames it with Hindemith’s Concert Music for Brass and Strings, and Dvořák’s much-loved ‘New World' symphony for a whole concert of music that’s all about emotion.

Cristian Mandeal conductor Ian Fountain piano

Saint-Saëns’ second Piano Concerto is jam packed with catchy tunes, and with the renowned British pianist Ian Fountain at the keyboard, it’ll spring to life.

An ordinary street, an ordinary little boy...and an extraordinary visitor, lost a long way from home. Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is a modernday fairy-tale. And with John Williams' glorious score performed live by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, it's never felt more magical - because there isn't a cinema in the world that can match the sound of a live orchestra taking flight. Bring the little ones and share your sense of wonder with a whole new generation: this is a New Year's treat for all ages. (Running time approximately 2 hours 45 minutes)
