On vocals and guitar Kris Drever, who has worked with Kate Rusby, Roddy Woomble, John McCusker and Eddi Reader. On fiddle is Aidan O’Rourke, a founding member of Blazin’ Fiddles and folk supergroup Kan. In front of an audience the band are renowned for pushing their compositions and each other to new heights. With seemingly telepathic musical communication, ten minute epics are infused with a spectrum of emotion: the perfect foil for Drever’s poignant songs and some eminently quotable stage banter. ‘One of the most exciting live acts in any genre, Lau are to be cherished’ The Arts Desk

Rock and West End vocalist Kerry Ellis teams up with Queen guitarist Brian May for this candlelit, acoustic show. The Born Free Tour fuses Ellis’s beautiful voice with May’s awe-inspiring guitar performance – all in support of the world famous Born Free Foundation. This concert follows a series of acclaimed performances by Ellis and May together over the past few years. After the success of their Anthems show here at Liverpool Philharmonic in 2011, stealing the show with their performance at the Royal Variety, and the release of their single Defying Gravity (the lead track from the musical Wicked) Kerry and Brian return with this majestic brand new acoustic show.

McDonald started to reconnect himself with the blues of his childhood. Little Axe mixes blues, gospel, reggae, dub and funk with modern technology. The ideas and techniques of his early album The Wolf That House Built was as John Clarke of The Times noted, ‘copied by Beck and Moby.’ For this gig Skip works on the vocals and guitar loop while Matt Smyth features on laptop/ electronics bringing a dynamic new element to Little Axe. Smyth controls the beats, the bass and adds layers of reverb and delay to the tracks. Little Axe mainlines the old Delta blues and plugs it into the 21st century.

Described by Time Magazine as ‘America’s greatest songwriter’ Lucinda Williams is one of rock’s most uncompromising and consistently fascinating writers and performers. Over the course of a 40 year recording career, the Louisiana-born singer and threetime Grammy Award winner has

navigated terrain as varied as the dust-bowl starkness of her 1978 debut Ramblin’ (recorded on the fly with a mere $250 budget), the stately elegance of 2007’s West which Vanity Fair called ‘the record of a lifetime’ and the emotional spectrum of her most recent release, Blessed, which features Elvis Costello on guitar. With reports of a new album possibly in spring 2013, this show reunites Williams with her longtime collaborator, and friend, the guitarist Doug Pettibone.

Rufus Wainwright Monday 1 July 7.30pm £29.50, £35, £45, £50

As singer, songwriter, author, composer, and even screen actor (Scorsese’s The Aviator), Rufus Wainwright has carved out his own singular place in the worlds of rock, opera, theatre, dance, and film. But he is possibly best known as the man Elton John referred to as ‘the greatest songwriter on the planet’. Wainwright brings his incomparable voice back to Liverpool for the first time since 2007, when he also performed at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Since then he has written an opera, picked up a Grammy Award and won a BRIT Award for Best International Male Artist.

The original 1973 album shot to No. 1 around the world, throwing its young composer into the international spotlight and kickstarting Richard Branson’s Virgin empire. Now forty years later, two Australian multiinstrumentalists race from instrument to instrument juggling pianos, organs, guitars, mandolin, drums, glockenspiel, loop pedals, synthesizers and, of course, Tubular Bells. Tubular Bells for Two burst onto the international scene at the Sydney Festival and was the smash-hit show of the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe - winning a Herald Angel Award. Witness this herculean feat as Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts recreate the beauty and playful lunacy of one of the most important albums of the 20th Century with just four hands and four feet.

Thursday 30 May 8.30pm £15 Reinhardt is the authentic and most distinctive musical voice in Gypsy music today. Critics and fans agree that it is not solely because he is the greatnephew of world-famous musician extraordinaire Django Reinhardt: it’s about his unique musical skill, and his ability to make it all appear so utterly effortless. In his performance he explores a fusion of styles, including flamenco, Latin, and Brazilian jazz combining these with a nod to his Gypsy influences for a spellbinding show.

Dead Belgian

Friday 31 May 8.30pm £12

Friday 14 June 8.30pm £12

One of the most influential old-time fiddle players around, Molsky is also a remarkable guitarist, banjo player and singer. His high-spirited music melds the archaic mountain sounds of Appalachia, the power of blues and the rhythmic intricacies of traditional African music. The Washington Post says Bruce’s music ‘set[s] into motion melodies that radiate enormous spirit and momentum’, and Sing Out! says his fiddling ‘combines precision and abandon so perfectly that it raises the hairs on the back

of your neck’. His 2001 album Poor Man’s Troubles was named by America’s Association for Independent Music as Traditional Folk winner in their annual album awards.

Woody Mann

Saturday 1 June 8.30pm £12

Among guitarists and critics, Mann is considered a modern master. While the blues are his touchstone, he draws inspiration from every direction, blending a myriad of influences with ease and grace. Pioneering guitar legend John Fahey said it well: ‘You can hear classical, jazz and blues approaches somehow converging into a single sparkling sound – a sound completely his own’. Mann’s fresh approach to American acoustic blues and his own compositions means that if you want to experience a guitarist and bluesman at the peak of their art, then look no further. See page 13 for details of Woody Mann’s Guitar Masterclass. ‘Don’t miss a chance to see him; you are unlikely to hear anything – or anyone better’ The Times

Thursday 20 June 8.30pm £12

Hailing from Prince Edward Island, a Canadian island province north of Nova Scotia, this award-winning band serve up old-time roots music and are known for their high energy performances. Gordie ‘Crazy Legs’ MacKeeman deserves his moniker for his thrilling dance style. Add to the mix great bluegrass vocals, Peter Cann’s blistering guitar solos, and the lively multi-instrumental talents of Thomas Webb and Mark Geddes, the quartet are the complete entertainment package. Dead Belgian play the music of Jacques Brel. The band have developed a playful and inventive sound that meshes dense melodic patterns, demonic waves of intensity and passages of sparse frailty with vocals from Fionnuala Dorrity that have drawn comparison to Edith Piaf, Anthony Hegarty and Nico. It is a sound unique to themselves while still capturing the beauty, passion and often dark humour of the original work, a rousing and rowdy back-porch reinvention of Jacques Brel’s honest and poetic stories.

‘These lads have taken their great musical skill and love for the repertoire and added engaging, sometimes jawdropping, stagecraft and showmanship. Man for man there may not be a better roots band playing in Canada today’ Montreal’s Folk Festival on the Canal

‘Dead Belgian’s deliciously ramshackle approach deconstructs Brel the myth and icon to reclaim him as a street musician, chanson, maestro and people’s champion’ Mojo

With the final date on Ian Prowse’s long-awaited first-ever solo tour sold out, we’ve added an extra date on Friday. Prowse (and accompanying musicians) play these acoustic shows which draw upon his 21 year career of songs, and to road test the tunes written for the new album which is being recorded early this year.

SANS

Thursday 4 July 8.30pm £12 SANS is the dazzling quartet of multi-instrumentalist Andrew Cronshaw (zither, fujara, ba-wu, marovantele, kantele), the great Finnish singer Sanna Kurki-Suonio, multi-instrumental reeds player Ian Blake (bass clarinet, soprano sax), and Tigran Aleksanyan, Armenian master of his country’s heart-rendingly voice-like reed pipe, the duduk. This instrumental combination is not found in any other band in the world, drawing deeply on their different but

remarkably compatible traditions; Finland’s Kalevala folklore, the sweeping melodies of Armenia and English folk song. They combine to make a genuinely new music of extraordinary beauty and fluidity.

Starting from the basics of fingerpicking, Woody teaches practical ways to improve your blues guitar technique, develop a swinging picking style and de-mystifies the process of creating your own variations in a song. These ideas will be illustrated as you learn tunes from the repertoire of the master blues and ragtime artists including Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy, Lonnie Johnson, Skip James, Reverend Gary Davis and others. Mann also shows how the techniques of traditional country blues form the basis for playing other styles including ragtime, swing, early jazz, and contemporary sounds. This is a hands on, practical session for people who want to take alternating picking to the next level and learn some great tunes. See page 10 for Woody Mann in concert.

Grand, dark, and blazing with unrequited passion, Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.1 is a real gothic melodrama – and if you’ve heard Petrenko’s acclaimed recording of the Third Symphony, you’ll already know how he makes this music catch fire. He’s beginning the concert with the exact opposite: the soaring melodies, radiant sunshine and deep serenity of Beethoven’s sublime Violin Concerto. ‘Petrenko packs a powerful emotional wallop, and I have no doubt that he and his dazzlingly accomplished band set new standards in this music’ The Classical Review on the Orchestra’s recording of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.3

Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra begins in darkness, and ends with a shout of joy. In between comes the ultimate work-out for orchestra: 40 minutes of zingy tunes, fabulous colours and raw feeling. Though Bartók was dying when he wrote it, this is simply one of the most life-affirming experiences in 20th century music, and a glorious showcase for the orchestra under the brilliant young conductor Ryan Wigglesworth. Another guest makes a welcome return: no-one plays Mozart with more style than Liverpool-born Paul Lewis. And no-one gives Chopin a spicier twist than Igor Stravinsky, as two romantic favourites get a magical Ballets Russes makeover. Book now at liverpoolphil.com

So when he came to write his ‘Little Solemn Mass’, he just couldn’t help filling it with cheerful rhythms, brilliant operatic solos and tune after irresistibly hummable tune. Stravinsky The Soldier’s Tale* Emily Howard Settle** *Anthony Marwood director *Walter Van Dyk narrator **Dane Lam conductor Returning from war, a soldier meets a sinister stranger. He offers him a bargain: the soldier’s violin in return for a book of untold riches. It seems like an easy choice – but this, after all, is a world in which the devil really does have all the best tunes. In troubled times, Stravinsky’s musical folk-tale remains as fresh, entertaining and unsettling as ever. First, though, enter a very different world: Liverpool-born Emily Howard has emerged as one of the UK’s most compelling musical voices, and in Settle – written for Ensemble 10/10 in 2010 – she evokes a deeply-felt landscape of outer beauty and inward sorrow.

Hindemith’s powerful 20th century showpiece and a striking new work by Graham Fitkin complement lyrical romantic miniatures by Sibelius, Enescu, Falla and Ravel, as well as some magical folkflavoured discoveries from Helseth’s native Norway. Expect to be charmed, entertained and – yes – moved by this wonderfully imaginative recital. ‘Helseth’s musicality is a joy.’ The Arts Desk

Programme includes Overture to The Gondoliers, Is Life a Boon from Yeomen of the Guard, Minerva and O Goddess Wise from Princess Ida, Overture to Iolanthe, As Someday it May Happen from Mikado, When I was a Lad from H.M.S Pinafore and a complete performance of Trial by Jury. John Wilson conductor Simon Butteriss The Learned Judge Sarah Fox The Plaintiff Ben Johnson The Defendant Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir

Vasily Petrenko conductor Alexandra Dariescu piano Vasily Petrenko and pianist Alexandra Dariescu in an evening of stirring Russian classics. Shostakovich’s exuberant Second Piano Concerto shows the composer’s more cheerful side. And one of Rachmaninov’s earliest symphonic works, Prince Rostislav, based upon a ballad written by A.K. Tolstoy, complements Tchaikovsky’s tuneful Capriccio Italien, written after a trip the composer took to Rome, and reflective of the Italian folk songs and dances he studied while there. ‘Could this be the best Russian orchestra outside Russia?’ Financial Times Following on from the success of Yeomen of the Guard, John Wilson presents another entertaining evening of Gilbert and Sullivan favourites, including the one-act comic opera Trial by Jury, dubbed ‘the most successful British one-act operetta of all time’, by theatre scholar Kurt Gänzl. The work is a delicious spoof of a breach of promise trial, a now-forgotten procedure where a man could be sued by a woman for withdrawing a proposal of marriage.

Liverpool VIP Screening & Concert

Thursday 1 August 7.30pm £12 screening only £20 screening & concert (includes coach between venues)

After a classical string quartet’s 25 years of success, Peter (Christopher Walken), the cellist and oldest member, decides that he must retire when he learns he has Parkinson’s disease. For the others, that announcement proves a catalyst for letting their hidden resentments come to the surface while the married members’ daughter has disruptive desires of her own.

Jane Hudson (Katharine Hepburn), a jaunty, attractive go it alone middle-aged secretary has finally made it to Venice for her longawaited dream holiday. She soon discovers that going it alone can leave one feeling terribly lonely. All that changes when Jane draws the attention of a handsome antiques-shop owner named Renato de Rossi (Rossano Brazzi). From the director of Brief Encounter, Lawrence Of Arabia, Great Expectations, Bridge On The River Kwai, Doctor Zhivago and Oliver Twist it is Summertime that is reputed to be Lean’s own favourite.

Experimental, captivating and entirely cohesive, it clearly indicates a new artistic lease of life and is arguably her most creatively-brimming album ever. Moyet’s new music has subtle parallels to her synth-pop past, but is also bang up-todate, taking in elements of R&B, modern club sounds and electronic experimentation. This concert places the minutes centre stage and also focuses on the significant electronic material in her back catalogue.
