Engage, Create, Learn, Experiment, Play! Welcome to our 2018-2019 family season! At Liverpool Philharmonic, there are lots of ways for children and young people to get involved in music – and for grown-ups to join in! Bring the whole family along to enjoy our Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Family Concerts (page 4), this season featuring percussion, teddy bears, sci-fi characters and much more! We love seeing your fancy dress costumes and everyone’s invited to join in the fun! Inspire your children’s love for music with our Under 5’s Concerts (page 10). Fun and informal, these popular concerts are the perfect way to introduce the youngest of audiences to the magic of music.

Nurture your children’s creativity and musicality with our Children’s Workshops (page 12). Musicians from the Orchestra lead these sessions which incorporate movement, singing and a range of different instruments. If you have a budding talent in the family, we have a range of ways for them to take part and develop their musical skills and confidence. From Orchestra Explorers Club, to Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company, there are opportunities for young people of all ages (page 15). Have fun and learn with the whole family at one of our Liverpool Philharmonic Experience Tours (page 18). You’ll get to see what happens behind the scenes and will be entertained by musical surprises, demonstrations and stories!

Family Concerts

Our family concerts are a great way for children and adults to experience the thrill of a full symphony orchestra. Fidgeting is welcome, so come along and enjoy the fun! Concerts last approximately one hour, and are designed with children in mind, with lots of tunes that you’ll be familiar with. They are most suitable for children aged 4-10, but the whole family is welcome to join in! Children and families are invited to have a go on a variety of instruments, from 30 minutes prior to each concert at our Instrument Petting Zoo, in the Grand Foyer.

Pianist Alexandra Dariescu, a single ballerina, and Tchaikovsky’s wonderful music come together with astonishing, state-of-the-art animation and digital effects to retell this seasonal classic like it’s never been told before, creating a fantastical world so real that you might even start to believe in sugar plum fairies! A fantastic adventure through ‘Time And Relative Dimensions In Space’ as our very own Time Lord has close encounters with out-of-this-world favourites from large and small screens. Including music from Star Wars, Thunderbirds, Knight Rider and Futurama, you can travel Back to the Future in a DeLorean, trek through the stars in The Enterprise - and watch out for despicable villains like Gru and Darth Vader along the way.

The bears are back – another chance to see Liverpool Philharmonic’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, with music composed by Ian Stephens, and other teddy bear favourites including ‘Spot the Bear’, ‘The Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ and ‘Lullaby for a Bear’. If you go down to the woods today… Alasdair and Bear will make sure that ‘we’re not scared’!

Relaxed Concert: Meet the Orchestra! Sunday 26 May 2.30pm Alasdair Malloy presenter Michael Seal conductor Let us introduce ourselves… Join Alasdair Malloy, Michael Seal and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for our first ever relaxed concert! Fun and accessible for all the family, we will meet the different sections of the Orchestra as they come together to play a range of music in this hour-long concert. Entertaining and interactive, the concert will feature familiar favourites, including ‘A Whole New World’ from Aladdin, Morning from Peer Gynt, and the everpopular ‘Happy,’ alongside some pieces you might not have heard before. Our relaxed concerts are designed with you and your family in mind, with an emphasis on providing high quality music, a safe and enjoyable environment, and support for audiences with a range of needs, including communication difficulties, physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

It’s never too early to introduce your children to the sights and sounds of an orchestra and these concerts are designed specifically for our very youngest audiences. Wriggling, dancing and exploring are all part of the experience! These concerts introduce young children to the different sounds of the orchestra through storytelling, in the informal surroundings of the Music Room.

Children’s Workshops £7 (including accompanying adult), additional adults £7 We have a variety of music workshop options available for children aged 0-5 years. The whole family can get involved - parents and grandparents are encouraged to join in! Led by musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the workshops involve singing, creative music-making and the opportunity to have a go on a range of musical instruments.

Sessions are held in our friendly, informal Music Room. All workshops include songsheets and suggestions on how to make music at home! Doors open 15 minutes before the workshop starts, and sessions last 45 minutes. Due to space limitations, the number of additional adults is limited for each workshop.

The choirs sing a wide range of music with performance opportunities throughout the year, including our annual family Christmas concerts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and weekly choral training.

Four-day, non-residential courses, based in Liverpool Monday 22 – Thursday 25 October Monday 15 – Thursday 18 April £80 per person, per course For young musicians aged 11-18 years, at Grade 4-7 standard, these courses offer the opportunity to develop your individual and group playing skills, grow in confidence and make friends with other young musicians. The course includes coaching from Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra players, as well as rehearsals, sectionals and a performance at the end for friends and family. You will also gain access to some of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company activities throughout the 2018/19 season.
