Jerry Dammers’ Spatial AKA Orchestra Thursday 1 April 7.30pm £17, £22 ‘Triumphant, glorious, exhilarating’ Uncut ‘One of the best things I have seen and heard’ Mr Scruff DJ

A unique chance to see Jerry Dammers and friends in concert. The founder of The Specials and 2 Tone records, writer of Ghost Town and Free Nelson Mandela, started his 18 piece orchestra as a ‘tribute band’ to space jazz maverick Sun Ra. Dammers has now expanded the repertoire from spiritual reggae, to Alice Coltrane’s eastern mysticism, deep jazzy ska to versions of Dammers’ own songs. Some of the country’s best jazz musicians including Zoe Rahman, Jason Yarde and Denys Baptiste perform, with occasional vocalists, inside Dammers’ rhythmic setting, which draws on funk, reggae, rock, hip hop, jungle and dubstep. The orchestra has received rave reviews from both jazz and rock/pop critics. This vivid visual and theatrical event was placed highly in the ten ‘What to see in 2010’ recommended by The Guardian’s pop and jazz critics.

Liverpool Sound City Official Launch

Gil Scott-Heron Plus support John Head Thursday 29 April 8.30pm £23.50, £28.50

Rokia Traoré takes African music places nobody knew it could go, using rock, jazz and classical as a springboard to adapt and update traditional Malian sounds. The Sunday Times described her 2008 album, Tchamantché as a ‘beguiling journey across borders’ and named it among the best of the year. Sweet Billy Pilgrim recorded their second album, Twice Born Men, in a shed. Nominated for the Mercury Prize, the result was, according to Uncut, ‘the best album of its kind since Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid’. In 1971 Gil Scott-Heron laid out the blueprint for the whole rap genre with The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, and now, as vital as ever, he returns to huge critical acclaim with his new album I'm New Here described by the NME as ‘Copper-bottomed genius...similar in delivery and intensity to Johnny Cash’s The Man Comes Around’. One of the most important figures in 20th-century music, his thoughtful, provocative and still rebellious voice is something to be heard. John Head is the founder and lead guitarist of cult Liverpool indie band Shack.
