Joni
Tomorrow’s Warriors presents Nu Civilisation Orchestra led by Peter Edwards and featuring ESKA on vocals for this exploration of the music of Joni Mitchell, through her jazz influenced classic album Hejira and her subsequent encounter with the pioneering jazz legend, Charles Mingus. With a canon of work including eight studio albums, Mitchell was already established as one of the great voices of her generation by the time she released Hejira in the late autumn of 1976. Jump forward to 1978, and Mitchell’s move into deeper jazz influences was suddenly pushed further through an unlikely collaboration with one of the most imposing jazz musicians ever to take to the stage, bass legend Charles Mingus. Mitchell’s ensuing album, Mingus, took the great man’s compositions as the inspiration for her own lyrics and she recorded, once again, with Jaco Pastorius plus other members of Weather Report. The result stands as one of the most emotionally intense and unexpected of musical collaborations. Philharmonic Hall Mitchell’s Hejira Mingus

In 2016, Jess Gillam became the first saxophonist ever to reach the finals of BBC Young Musician of the Year – and she just keeps getting better. This engaging young star from Cumbria is the kind of artist who makes everything she plays light up, and we’re delighted to welcome her back for Glazunov’s nostalgic concerto. We’ll then hear from Glazunov’s star pupil, Shostakovich, as guest conductor Andris Poga returns to explore the dark shadows and raw emotion of the gripping Tenth Symphony. The brass and percussion sections of the Orchestra blow open the concert with the uplifting Fanfares Liturgiques by French composer, Henri Tomasi.
