Welcome to our Autumn/ Winter season of Leap into Live Music! events, offering a fantastic range of new performances for our members. As a Leap member you get access to free and discounted performances at Liverpool Philharmonic. We are delighted to offer concerts over the Christmas period again this year. We want to be able to offer as many tickets as possible, which means there will be a small charge of £10 per adult and £5 for under 16s for these events. This is still a fantastic discounted rate of up to 75% and allows us to contribute towards the cost of tickets so that as many people as possible can benefit from live music in Liverpool.

If you’re not sure if a concert or performance will be suitable for you or your family please just get in touch, our team will be happy to advise. We hope you like our latest brochure and the events we have on offer – if you think we have missed anything or have any comments please do let us know, we’d love to know what you think.

We look forward to seeing you at an event soon! Liz | Leap into Live Music!

All tickets must be booked at least 1 week before the performance by sending an email to leap@liverpoolphil.com, or by calling Box Office on 0151 709 3789. 3

How the scheme works… Leap into Live Music! is generously funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to enable Liverpool Philharmonic to provide tickets for people to experience live music events. We offer a range of performances across Liverpool Philharmonic’s varied programme from orchestral performances to Rock ‘n’ Pop concerts.

What to do if you can’t make an event… If you can’t make an event, we ask that you let us know as soon as you can. This will enable us to offer the tickets to other Leap members and make sure that the seats don’t go to waste. If you have a family emergency or something crops up don’t worry, but we’d appreciate that you let us know once things have settled down. We are starting to implement a three strikes rule for members who consistently book, fail to attend and don’t let us know. This enables us to prioritise members who really want tickets. To cancel: email leap@liverpoolphil.com call Box Office on 0151 709 3789 or text (make sure you give your name) 07834 790 760 Please note that normal telephone Box Office opening hours are: Monday to Saturday 9.30am - 6pm performance days 9.30am - 5.30pm non-performance days Sunday 12noon - 6pm performance days 12noon - 5pm non-performance days

All or Nothing: The Mod Musical Sunday 10 September 7.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall –

This ‘Mod’ Musical celebrates the unique sound of the iconic 60s band, The Small Faces. The band encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed and street-wise. But these working class free spirits shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. Featuring the music of the Small Faces, including an arsenal of brilliant hits like ‘Whatcha Gonna Do About It’, ‘Lazy Sunday’, ‘Tin Soldier’, ‘Sha La La La Lee’, ‘Itchycoo Park’ and of course ‘All Or Nothing’. “Funny, fiery and brave… you’ll have a rocking night out” The Daily Star Sunday

CHAMBER MUSIC

Dvořák’s Cello Concerto

Friday 22 September 1.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall – Barber Overture, School for Scandal Dvořák Cello Concerto Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2

Vasily Petrenko conductor Alexey Stadler cello

When Vasily Petrenko conducts Russian music, you know to expect big emotions. And they don’t come much bigger than in Rachmaninov’s glorious Second Symphony. He’s paired it with Dvořák’s Cello Concerto: written in the New World and performed tonight, for the first time in Liverpool, by the young Russian star, Alexey Stadler. It’s part of a celebration of music inspired by America: so Barber’s firecracker of an overture will set things off with a bang!

Red Priest: Gypsy Baroque Fantasy

Tuesday 26 September 7.30pm St George’s Hall Concert Room –

Piers Adams recorders Adam Summerhayes violin Angela East cello David Wright harpsichord

Tonight, it’s all about the gypsy spirit, with wild, folk-inspired music by Telemann, Handel and of course Vivaldi himself. If you’ve heard them before (they sold out last season), you won’t need telling twice: they’re hot stuff! Led by “superhuman” recorder player Piers Adams, “baroque supergroup” Red Priest puts the fire back into the baroque, making every performance into a carnival.

The Coal Porters

Wednesday 4 October 2017 8pm Music Room –

The Coal Porters are an exciting and dynamic bluegrass combo formed in the 1990s. They have wowed audiences at numerous UK and European venues, done no less than four North American tours and performed to tens of thousands at festivals. The band has demonstrated the power of fiddle, mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, harmonies and memorable melodies – and has taken this sound around the world. “Sid Griffin was playing Americana years before the term was invented and that pioneer spirit shines on with his current band, the Coal Porters!” Billy Bragg

Music by Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel, Biber, Byrd and Mielczewski and Hungarian folk melodies.

Casablanca: Film with Live Orchestra

Saturday 14 October 2.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall – Dirk Brossé conductor

You must remember this… Rick and Sam, Bogart and Bergman, and a love story amidst the turmoil of wartime North Africa. Casablanca is a thriller, a film noir, and an unforgettable weepie – and these screenings, with Max Steiner’s score played live by the full Orchestra, it’ll spring urgently to life, sounding as rich and as passionate as it did when it was first released in 1942. The fundamental things apply – so play it again, Sam… Film Courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Fingal’s Cave

Friday 27 October 2017 1.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall – Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave) Sibelius Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No. 4

Jacek Kaspszyk conductor Henning Kraggerud violin

Johannes Brahms’ last symphony is one of classical music’s most stirring spiritual journeys, and guest conductor Jacek Kaspszyk knows how to make it sing – just as the charismatic Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud will wring every last drop of feeling from the fire and ice of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. But first, all aboard for a boat-trip, as the young Felix Mendelssohn sets sail for the Hebrides. You can almost taste the salt as the orchestra conjures up the sights and sounds of the Scottish island of Staffa and its famous Fingal’s Cave.

Spooktacular! Sunday 29 October 2.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall – Alasdair Malloy presenter Kevin Field conductor

Pictures at an Exhibition

Sunday 5 November 2.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall – Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 Mussorgsky (arr. Ravel) Pictures at an Exhibition

Carlos Miguel Prieto conductor Boris Giltburg piano

A hut on hen’s legs, an angry gnome, and all the bells of old Russia. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition overflows with glowing colours and fantastic tales – and that’s just the climax of this evening’s Russian adventure. First comes the piece they call the “Everest of Piano Concertos”, a concerto so overwhelming that even Rachmaninov himself had to practise extra-hard before playing it! So we can’t wait to hear it performed by the phenomenal Boris Giltburg. Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto will be with him every step of the way.

David Matthews Norfolk March Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Hamish MacCunn Overture, The Land of the Mountain and the Flood Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony (Symphony No. 1)

Andrew Manze conductor James Ehnes violin Sarah Fox soprano Andrew Foster-Williams bassbaritone Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir

Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony takes the poems of Walt Whitman and opens the floodgates to a spring tide of inspiration. Andrew Manze’s Vaughan Williams recordings with the Orchestra have been praised for their “rare sensitivity and warmth”, and the Choir has this music in its blood. Violinist James Ehnes, meanwhile, loves The Lark Ascending so much that he’s come here specially to play it – though when you hear the tunes in Hamish MacCunn’s delightful The Land of the Mountain and the Flood, you’ll wonder why it isn’t just as popular.
