Welcome... It’s a pleasure to introduce the first What’s On Guide to include performances in the newly refurbished Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, and what finer way to kick off than with the return of Bellowhead?! But just before that, we are delighted once more to partner Liverpool Irish Festival, presenting three great shows in St George’s Hall Concert Room: the prospect of seeing new Irish supergroup The Gloaming there is mouthwatering! As ever, this guide brings you details of all Liverpool Philharmonic events at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and elsewhere: on this occasion I leave it to you to select those that best meet your tastes, and instead would like to sign off on a personal note. I have had the privilege of working for Liverpool Philharmonic since early 2003, bringing the best local, national and international music to our stages; presenting, sometimes producing, and working in partnership with many of the city’s great festivals. It’s been a great pleasure,
Thanks to the City of Liverpool for its financial support
made possible only because there is such support from Liverpool audiences for brilliant music, comedy and film. By the time you read this I will have ended my time at Liverpool Philharmonic and taken up a new role, and I’d like to thank you therefore for the support you continue to show to Liverpool Philharmonic, and I am delighted that the concert hall, our orchestra and our wider programme are all on such excellent form!

Their music has a solid traditional backbone. Jazz, rock, bluegrass and world music rhythms and harmonies are creatively structured around this base treating the listener to layers of rich and intricate sounds. The band delivers a punchy programme of both their own compositions and old tunes with a new emerald vibe.

There are plenty of free events to explore during the Festival. Here are some of our favourites:
We Banjo 3 plus support: Maz O’Connor Thursday 30 October 7.30pm St George’s Hall Concert Room £16 – ‘Count yourself among the fortunate. You are about to hear something new, something fresh, something daring’ says Paul F Wells, Director at The Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University. The award-winning quartet from Galway combines Irish old-time bluegrass music and song to reveal the banjo’s rich legacy and roots.
Featuring banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals and percussion We Banjo 3 make an extraordinary musical statement. This band of brothers; Enda and Fergal
Scahill and Martin and David Howley are among the most celebrated and distinguished young musicians in Ireland today. The Irish Times describes them as ‘absolutely virtuosic’ and LiveIreland are calling them ‘a new force in Irish music’. On their debut CD UkFolkMusic.co.uk said ‘[it] will hopefully one day be considered on a par (in folk music terms) with say the first time you heard Steeleye Span or Fairport Convention.’
WeBanjo3 have been at the forefront of Irish banjo and fiddle for two decades. Their competitive success is unrivalled, Martin holding seven All Ireland titles, Enda with four, while Fergal and David hold All Ireland titles on Banjo, Fiddle, Bodhran and Guitar. Enda has recorded and performed with
The Chieftains, Frankie Gavin, Stockton’s Wing, Grammywinner Ricky Skaggs and The Brock McGuireBand. Fergal has performed with David Munnelly, Martin O’Connor and Kevin Crawford and has toured the world with Ragus and Celtic Legends and Martin was the very first Irish banjo player to perfom at the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville. ‘These three ultra-talented Irish performers deliver hallowed musical traditions from Ireland and America with a freshness and finesse bordering on magical.’ Wall Street Journal ‘The hottest thing in the tradition. Get on board early, as they are a stunning example of current brilliance in trad.’ LiveIreland.com
The Gloaming Sunday 2 November 7.30pm St. George’s Hall Concert Room £25 – The Gloaming connect the rich Irish folk music tradition and New York’s contemporary music scene. The band’s five members met in early 2011 at Grouse Lodge Studios is West Meath, Ireland. Pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill, fiddle master Martin Hayes, hardanger innovator Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh and Irish singer Iarla Ó Lionaird - well known for his contribution to the legendary Afro Celt Sound System - discovered a shared musical aesthetic that transcended the genres for which they’ve become known. In the brief time since their formation, The Gloaming have become a much-heralded live draw in UK and Europe – playing to capacity crowds this summer in the world’s most
prestigous venues. They have sold out concerts at London’s Union Chapel, Dublin’s National Concert Hall, at Holland Festival in Amsterdam and Paris’s Cite de la Musique. They also played their second ever US show in a co-bill with Kronos Quartet at the Lincoln Center. The music they make is ephemeral yet furious, pairing memorable, yearning melodies with a progressive style. The group hearkens back to some of the most unexpected success stories of the late 90s – when the amazing, largely instrumental, sound of artists like Buena Vista Social Club and Sigur Ros helped the niche genres of Afro-
Cuban music and post-rock to break into popular consciousness. Imagine if alchemical music of a band like Tortoise could appeal to your old Irish uncle – and you have an idea of what The Gloaming are after. ‘Moves the music of Ireland in captivating new directions.’ The New Yorker ‘Their live performances so far have been revelatory... Future dates are likely to cement them as one of the great forces in Irish music.’ The Irish Times

For over five decades, Pascal Rogé has brought poetry, wit and an unmistakably Gallic sense of style to the music of Debussy, Bizet and their compatriots. More recently he’s teamed up with his wife Ami to bring the same joyous musicality to the repertoire for piano duet, and for this concert they tackle the ‘Everest’ of piano duets: the keyboard version of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Remembrance Saturday 8 November 7.30pm Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral £25 – Strauss Death and Transfiguration Elgar Cello Concerto Fauré Requiem – Yan Pascal Tortelier conductor Daniel Müller-Schott cello Christopher Purves baritone Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
As the Great War came to a close, Edward Elgar retreated to the woods - and his haunting Cello Concerto has been breaking hearts ever since. The young German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott brings a unique poetry to this great British classic, at the centre of a whole evening devoted to the music of remembrance in the evocative surroundings of Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral. Richard Strauss’s Death and Transfiguration rages heroically against the dying of the light, while Fauré’s serene Requiem shares a vision of timeless peace. In this magical sequence of Christmas music, Wall plays the concert harp, the magical wire-strung Gaelic harp, and the jangling, medieval bray harp. The melodies are familiar, but the sounds summon up lost worlds and half-forgotten tales: interspersed with music by Satie, Piazzolla and Debussy, this is a Christmas Concert with a haunting difference.

Think of Rossini and you think of opera: grand opera. That’s exactly how he wrote his Stabat Mater – turning a sacred text into a spiritual drama of positively operatic passion and power. Music like this demands a special kind of performer, so please welcome Italian conductor Speranza Scappucci, soprano Marina Rebeka, and an all-star team of vocal talent. When Scappucci and Rebeka recorded with the Orchestra last year, something just clicked, and we’re thrilled to introduce them to you in a concert that also features the teenage Mozart’s joyful Exsultate, jubilate – and the spoof Rossini overture that Schubert wrote to win a bet!
Hindemith Concerto for Orchestra Shostakovich Symphony No.9 – Darrell Ang conductor Marcel Becker bass Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Expect the unexpected. The Soviet authorities wanted Shostakovich’s Ninth to be a blockbuster epic, but instead they got a brilliantly entertaining mini-masterpiece with a wicked sense of humour. We expect double basses to seen and hardly heard, but tonight the Orchestra’s own Marcel Becker stars in the UK premiere of a new concerto by Tan Dun, the world-famous composer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. And the dynamic young conductor Darrell Ang has roots in the Far East – but trained in the great Russian tradition. Bring a Russian conductor together with a Macedonian pianist, and…well, one critic described Vasily Petrenko’s and Simon Trpčeski’s award-winning Rachmaninov recordings as “bursting with fire!” But then, Russian musicians have always drawn inspiration from the South. In his Little Russian symphony, and in the bustling life and blazing sunlight of Rome in his Capriccio Italien, Tchaikovsky was no exception. This should be a particularly joyous instalment of our year-long salute to Tchaikovsky; but first, we re-assemble the Petrenko-Trpčeski dream-team in music of blue skies and smouldering passions: Ravel’s sparkling, Basque-inspired Piano Concerto.
