Liverpool Philharmonic Starter Collection A Playlist for Beginners It can be hard if you’re unfamiliar with classical music to know where to start. Don't be put off by all the fancy language and exotic titles, or worry that you’re supposed to find Messiaen amazing straight away (you might not!). It's just music. Very good music. Just remember, it could take you a few listens before you understand a classical piece in the same way that you do popular music. When you’re just starting out you might need to listen to a piece all the way through several times before you start to make any sense of it. That’s totally normal. We’ve put together a list of several concerts for you to start with if you want to get into classical music, but are overwhelmed by the sheer number of concerts in this brochure!
CLASSIC FM: CELEBRATING 25 YEARS Thursday 7 September 7.30pm (Page 17) A great ‘taster’ concert of well-loved music, including Bruch’s Violin Concerto, which for many years was No. 1 in the Classic FM Hall of Fame, and which remains one of the most popular – and beautiful – of all violin concertos.
THE PLANETS II Sunday 22 October 2.30pm (Page 23) The Planets, by Gustav Holst is one of those pieces that you need to hear live to feel its full impact. If you’ve never been blown away by a full symphony orchestra at the height of its power (and immense volume!) this is your chance. And you’re certain to have heard bits of it before – it’s been used in everything from the Rugby World Cup song, ‘World In Union’, to Super Mario Bros. video games and is the basis for the hymn, ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’. Iron Maiden have even used part of it to pump up the crowd on several tours!

BACK TO THE FUTURE: FILM WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA Saturday 30 December 2.30pm & 7.30pm Dirk Brossé conductor Back to the Future™ & © Universal Studios and U-Drive Joint Venture. Power up your DeLorean… recharge your flux capacitor… and get ready to celebrate this unforgettable movie classic as you’ve never seen and heard it before! Back to the Future, staring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover, is the 1.21-gigawatt blockbuster that topped the 1985 box office chart, spawned two wildly successful sequels and stamped an enduring imprint on pop culture. In this time-traveling coming-of-age story, Marty McFly (Fox) suddenly finds himself transported back to 1955… where he struggles to change the destiny of his parents (Thompson, Glover), rescue an eccentric friend (Lloyd) from terrorists, and solve an alternative-plutonium crisis… all while trying to ensure he has a future to get back to! Now, fans old and new will experience the thrill of Back to the Future like never before – on a big hi-def screen with a full symphony orchestra performing Alan Silverstri’s dazzling musical score live in synch with the movie. Audiences will also be in for an exclusive treat: approximately twenty minutes of brand new music added by award-winning composer Silvestri to the film's score especially for these unique live orchestra presentations. SPANISH RHAPSODY Thursday 19 April 7.30pm Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Weber Ravel Piano Concerto in G Francesco Tristano Neihou (uK Premiere) Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune Ravel Rapsodie espagnole Maxime Tortelier conductor Francesco Tristano piano It’s not quite the summer yet, so why not give the sunny weather a kick-start? Debussy’s Faun dreams wondrous dreams; Paul Hindemith unleashes the full orchestra in a riot of melody, Ravel whisks us off to a Spanish fiesta – and the Barcelona-based pianist and composer Francesco Tristano revels in the jazzy melodies and southern sunshine of Ravel’s fabulous Piano Concerto. He’s bringing a little something of his own, too, Neihou, a work made of one long rhythmic sequence with slow harmonic shifts, inspired by minimalist structures. Tickets £15, £21, £27, £34, £44

VERTIGO: FILM WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA Thursday 24 May 7.30pm Anthony Gabriele conductor Under the blue skies of 1950s San Francisco, James Stewart becomes obsessed with a mysterious woman – and obsession, as he’s about to find out, can be deadly. Film critics recently voted Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo the best film ever made, and Bernard Herrmann’s mesmerising score is one of the greatest of all movie soundtracks. Vertigo is 60 years old this year, so for this one-off screening, Herrmann’s music is performed live by the full Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s never sounded more vivid – or more gripping. Just don’t look down... Film courtesy of Paramount Pictures Tickets £15, £21, £27, £34, £44 Booking fees may apply*

Corporate and Private Events at Liverpool Philharmonic We’re pleased to be able to offer Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and the associated spaces to be hired for a range of events from private parties and weddings to corporate receptions and conferences. Whatever the occasion, we provide unique settings for a memorable occasion.
The Grand Foyer, brimming with art deco features with large etched windows overlooking Hope Street, is the perfect place for an afternoon tea for 50, a celebration dinner for 100 or a cocktail party for 350! Our newest space, Music Room, is a double-height room located on the ground floor and can accommodate up to 250 for a reception, or 120 for lunch or dinner. A versatile space with outstanding acoustics and a state of the art sound system make it the perfect choice for your meetings, seminars and wedding receptions. Views across the city don’t come much better than our top-floor 1840 room. It’s an intimate space for a small-scale reception or private dinner. Easy access to the Grand Circle makes it ideal for pre-concert receptions and corporate hospitality. The much-loved and highly-rated Delifonseca is Liverpool Philharmonic’s new catering partner. Delifonseca have years of experience and will work with you to create the perfect food for your special event. Danielle and Charlotte will listen to your ideas and help distil them into a menu that suits your budget as well as your aspirations.
