information), a day of free performances and activities for the whole family. If you are a fan of our After 8 series in the Rodewald Suite, please be aware that from September we have made a change: The doors for all of these gigs will open at 7:30pm, and the show will begin shortly after 8pm. This enables us all to fully enjoy the in-house bar and rooftop terrace before the gigs, have a chat with the artist afterwards, and still catch trains and buses at a reasonable hour. In addition to the events I’ve already mentioned I’m especially looking forward to welcoming back Bain, Moller & Molsky who recorded their album during two After 8 shows with us last year and are now on the road promoting it. And in October, we celebrate one of the most important records the chance to experience our music, ensembles and learning activities free of charge. Enjoy free 30 minute performances (12.15pm/1.00pm/1.45pm) by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko as they perform music by Bizet, Tchaikovsky and Grieg. For the 1pm concert the Orchestra will perform with the children of Faith Primary School, as part our ground-breaking In

in English folk music, welcoming an all-star cast including Richard Hawley and John Smith with many of the Waterson/Carthy clan for Bright Phoebus Revisited. Finally I urge you to visit liverpoolphil.com regularly as it will reveal some surprises! On August 9 we will reveal the very special guest vocalist who’ll perform with The Guy Barker Orchestra on 27 October. The website will also be the place where we reveal the superb line up for Celebrate Our NHS at 65 that takes place on 29 November. These will both be remarkable shows and will sell out. It’s going to be a very special four months of live music: enjoy! Simon Glinn Executive Director, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Events Harmony project. West Everton Super Strings (from the In Harmony project) will entertain us at 2.30pm, there’ll be an Instrument Petting Zoo all day where you can get your hands on a range of musical instruments and at 3.10pm we’ll show the classic film Bugsy Malone on Liverpool Philharmonic Hall’s famous rising cinema screen. We will confirm the full schedule soon so check liverpoolphil.com for further information.

Live_Transmission

Joy Division Reworked by Heritage Orchestra & Scanner Monday 30 September 7.30pm £20, £26 A totally unique audio-visual collaboration between electronic music pioneer Scanner, the restlessly inventive Heritage Orchestra, and exploratory visual artist Matt Watkins reinterpreting one of the UK’s most influential bands, Joy Division. This sonic and visual spectacle turns the tables on the conventional concert experience. Rather than classical interpretations or cover versions, Live_Transmission is a fearless dismantling of Joy Division’s visual and musical motifs, creating a hugely powerful and immersive event that pays homage to one of the world’s most progressive ‘art’ bands. The entire show pivots

around the virtuosic ferocity of drummer Adam Betts, guitarist Matt Calvert (both members of instrumental noise-rock band Three Trapped Tigers and bassist John Calvert (Ghostpoet). Conductor Jules Buckley battles with equal force using the formidable strings, brass, voices, and percussion of the Heritage Orchestra in conjunction with the incomparable sounds of Scanner. Huge screens capture the projected artwork of Matt Watkins, who rips apart the internalised orchestra with a barrage of visuals that switch between clarity and chaos. Spawned from the idea of Laura Ducceschi, developed into musical coherence by Scanner, orchestrated by Tom Trapp, and realised by the Heritage Orchestra; this performance promises to respect the ground that it dares to tread whilst

venturing into new artistic territory. Jules Buckley conductor Scanner and Chris Wheeler musical direction Matt Watkins visual direction Matt Calvert, Adam Betts, John Calvert & Heritage Orchestra musicians Tom Trapp orchestrator & piano Laura Ducceschi creative producer & concept Supported by Arts Council England Commissioned and Produced by Brighton Festival 2012

The Original line-up of The Seekers reunite for this 50th Anniversary Farewell show. The pop quartet comprising Judith Durham (vocals, piano, tambourine), Athol Guy (double bass, vocals), Keith Potger (guitar, banjo, vocals) and Bruce Woodley (guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals) are the ONLY surviving chart-topping band from the 60s, anywhere in the world, with all the original founding members.

Tuesday 22 October 7.30pm £22.50, £27.50, £33.50

Saturday 19 October 7.30pm £27.50, £29.50, £35.50 Featuring: Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Searchers, PJ Proby, The Fortunes, and Brian Poole and Chip Hawkes

During this two hour, 50th anniversary show, The Hollies perform their classic hits including The Air That I Breathe, Carrie Anne, Stop! Stop! Stop!, Long Cool Woman, Look Through Any Window, Bus Stop, I’m Alive, Just One Look, On A Carousel, He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother and more gems celebrating all things Hollies.

Bright Phoebus Revisited The Songs of Lal & Mike Waterson Monday 14 October 7.30pm £22, £28 Featuring: Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Richard Hawley, Marry Waterson, Norma Waterson, Olly Waterson, John Smith, Kami Thompson Kate St John music director Neill MacColl guitar Rory MacFarlane bass Martyn Barker drums

For lovers of Sixties music this, probably never to be repeated, line-up is a genuinely exciting chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of when it all began. Featuring record breaking Merseybeat band Gerry & The Pacemakers, the second Liverpool band to chart (after The Beatles), but the first to reach No.1, and the first act ever to top the charts with their first three singles. Also from Liverpool The Searchers whose first single also went to No.1

This is the story of a ‘lost’ classic album. Written by folk luminaries the late Lal & Mike Waterson, Bright Phoebus was released in 1972, attracting little interest and largely shunned by critics at the time. It is now considered one of the definitive recordings of the genre - mixing dark poetic ballads of life, death, love and longing with, at times, Sgt Pepper pop-like sensibility. This project draws together the remaining members of the Waterson family plus special guests, to celebrate the life and work of Lal and Mike through their music. They will perform the album live for the very first time and also previously unheard and unreleased songs of Lal and Mike.

and led to five more Top Five hits and a total of 128 weeks in the charts. Controversial, ponytailed P.J. Proby, whose trouser splitting shocked the nation. The Fortunes who stormed the Top 10 with You’ve Got Your Troubles, Here It Comes Again, Freedom Come Freedom Go and Storm in a Teacup. And finally, original members of The Tremeloes Brian Poole and Chip Hawkes on stage together.

Al Stewart came to stardom as part of the British folk revival in the 60s and 70s, and developed his own unique style of combining folk-rock songs with delicately woven tales of the great characters and events from history. He has released 15 studio albums since his debut in 1967, Bedsitter Images. Perhaps best known for his hit Year of the Cat, from the platinum album of the same name, and the platinum follow up album Time Passages, Stewart’s career spans four decades as a key figure in British music. He played at the first ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, worked with Yoko Ono pre-Lennon and shared a London apartment with a young Paul Simon.

Alison Moyet Friday 25 October 7.30pm £29.50, £33.50, £39.50

Electro-pop icon Alison Moyet has achieved sales of more than 20 million records, both as a solo artist and as half of the hugely influential duo Yazoo. This summer she released her first studio album since 2007. It finds Moyet’s voice strong and seductive on a collection of exceptional songs. Experimental, captivating and entirely cohesive, it clearly indicates a new artistic lease of life and is arguably her most creatively-brimming album ever. Moyet’s new music has subtle parallels to her synth-pop past, but is also bang up-to-date, taking in elements of R&B, modern club sounds and electronica. This concert places the minutes centre stage and also focuses on the significant electronic material in her back catalogue.

During the early 70s, The Stylistics had twelve straight Top Ten hits, including You Are Everything, Betcha by Golly, Wow, I’m Stone in Love With You, Break Up to Make Up, and You Make Me Feel Brand New. Of all their peers, they were one of the smoothest and sweetest soul groups of their era. All of their hits are ballads graced with a soaring falsetto vocal and lush yet graceful production that have made them one of the most successful soul groups ever.

Three critically acclaimed artists of the 80s join forces in this major new UK tour. Go West, Hue and Cry, performing an acoustic set, and special guests The Christians are united on the same bill for the first time ever. With millions of albums sales between them and iconic hits such as We Close Our Eyes, Call Me, King Of Wishful Thinking, Labour Of Love, Looking For Linda, Violently, Ideal World, Forgotten Town and Harvest For The World plus over twenty five years of perfecting their craft, performing to audiences at sold out stadiums, intimate unplugged sets and everything in between, this authentic 80s triple header will take you right back there with three of the era’s most enduring bands.

‘The only thing that matters is the song’ says singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. That conviction, along with a oneof-a-kind voice, has carried her from busking on the streets of Paris all the way to mainstream recognition. of material. Peyroux’s new album, The Blue Room (out now on Decca), sees the genreblending singer reworking some landmark musical gems, in a collaboration with longtime Peyroux producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Walter Becker, Tracy Chapman, Herbie Hancock). Following her string of sold out shows at Ronnie Scott’s in London and at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, she returns to Liverpool Philharmonic. ‘A balance of vulnerable humanity and meticulous skill’ The Guardian members Anto Thistlethwaite and Trevor Hutchinson for the first time since 1990. The four are joined by current Waterboys drummer Ralph Salmins. The show is a re-exploration of the band’s music of the Fisherman’s Blues period. Rather than simply playing the original album in order the band will use their vintage repertoire as inspiration, Scott explains that the classic album is ‘a starting point for a new blast of the freewheeling, improvised spirit of The Waterboys in those days. I want that old fire burning again, Steve and Anto wailing like the two-man orchestra I remember, when anything could and did happen’. Expect souped-up, full power versions of lots of 1985-88 Waterboys numbers, plus hits, innovations and some surprises.

The Bulgarian Voices

Angelite

Tuesday 17 December 7.30pm St George’s Hall Concert Room £20, £25 Their voices are fascinating, their style of singing is distinctive and rooted in centuries of local tradition. Prior to the fall of communism, The Bulgarian Voices Angelite were largely unknown to the world, but in the years since the Iron Curtain has lifted this all-women-choir, formed from the ashes of the old State Television Choir dating back to 1952, have managed to enchant the world with their singular blend of classical and folk traditions. The cryptic, mysterious, perhaps even somewhat mystical quality that characterises the choir’s sound arises from the singers’ preference for a second voice which is maintained at a slight interval to the leading melody.

The singers’ voices fan out into a colourfully glowing sound palette that plays with overtone resonance. As a result, Angelite offers something that goes beyond folk music: It is the artful and skilful enhancement of traditional elements to form a style which - despite its great affinity with the folklore of the Balkans and

Bulgaria - can be considered a category of its own, at the same time preserving heritage and advancing the music into fascinating new territory. ‘Angelite is an amazing example of vocal virtuosity’ The Scotsman

When Vasily Petrenko and the Orchestra play Russian music, something very special happens: something that makes critics around the world sit up and take notice. Stravinsky’s colourful ritual of jazz-age Paris rings up the curtain, before the strings of the orchestra have their say in Tchaikovsky’s gloriously romantic Serenade for Strings. And then the Orchestra join forces with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Huddersfield Choral Society to deliver the final instalment in their internationallyacclaimed Shostakovich symphony cycle – the dark and deeply-felt Thirteenth Symphony, a timeless protest against inhumanity and prejudice.

200 years ago, two musical giants were born. Giuseppe Verdi made Italian opera blaze with an unquenchable fire, and Richard Wagner created whole new universes of sound. Tonight the young British conductor Andrew Gourlay toasts them both – and then unleashes the daddy of them all: Ludwig van Beethoven. Two centuries on, no four notes still sound more electrifying than the opening hammerblows of Beethoven’s stupendous Fifth Symphony – but the rest of the symphony is even more powerful! Hear every note tonight, and hear a real Liverpool favourite, locally-born pianist Paul Lewis, as he explores the light, the shadows and the deep, dark poetry of Beethoven’s most personal piano concerto. Make sure you’re there for this landmark in Liverpool’s musical history.

Mahler’s Fifth Symphony begins in the darkest depths of the human soul. By the end, it’s raising the roof, as a whole orchestra seems to dance and shout for joy. It’s an incredible journey, and along the way you’ll hear delirious waltzes, terrifying storms, and the sweetest, most tender love song any composer ever wrote: the unforgettable Adagietto. Our guest conductor Thomas Dausgaard knows how to set pulses racing – and he’ll do exactly that when he joins the Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud in the sweet and sultry first concerto by adopted Liverpudlian Max Bruch, who was Principal Conductor from 1880 to 1883. Join the starry duo of Bryn Terfel and John Owen Jones, for a night at the musicals like no other! With songs from Bernstein’s West Side Story (‘I Feel Pretty’), Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera (‘Music Of the Night’), Schönberg’s Les Misérables, Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel (‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’) and South Pacific (‘Some Enchanted Evening’), and more, this will be an evening to remember. John Owen Jones is an award winning and record-breaking West End and Broadway actor and recording artist - probably best known for his performances as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. Bryn Terfel, of course, has won plaudits as a singer of 1940sand 1950s Broadway musicals in his recordings of these works and in many live performances.

They call her the Queen of Harps – and Catrin Finch’s charm, poetry and sheer musicianship made her the natural choice to be the first Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales in over a century. It’s also made her an international star. So it’s no surprise that Bryn Terfel was eager to invite her to feature in his Liverpool residency; or that she’s chosen some of the most enchanting chamber works of the last century, as she teams up with Orchestra principal players in Ravel’s shimmering Introduction and Allegro. French magic – with a Welsh touch!

Llŷr Williams was born in a village near Wrexham and over the past decade he’s emerged as one of the most commanding, intelligent and consistently inspiring pianists of his generation. As the winner of the 2012 South Bank Sky Arts Award for Classical Music, it’s not hard to see why Bryn Terfel has personally invited Williams to participate in his Liverpool residency, and he’s chosen a truly spectacular programme. Williams opens with Beethoven’s most brilliant piano sonata before tackling the huge, flamboyant piano transcriptions that Liszt wrestled out of the grandest operas of Verdi and Wagner. Great tunes, mountainous grandeur, and piano playing to take the breath away: a piano recital for aficionados and newcomers alike.

Puccini’s Tosca Friday 20 September 7.30pm & Sunday 22 September 2.30pm £30, £35, £40, £50, £65 Puccini Tosca

Imagine there’s no heaven…when Johannes Brahms wrote his Requiem, he wasn’t thinking of judgment or the Last Trumpet. He wasn’t thinking of the afterlife at all. Instead, overcome by grief at the death of his mother, he set out to console and comfort the living. The result was his A German Requiem, one of the most beautiful, most moving and – yes – most profoundly spiritual choral works of all time. It’s the deep, calm centre to The Art of Bryn Terfel; a chance for him to show yet another side of his artistry, and to share the stage with Vasily Petrenko, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and the magnificent young British soprano Sophie Bevan (recipient of The Times Breakthrough Award at the 2012 South Bank Sky Arts Awards) in a concert to touch your very soul. What price will they be prepared to pay for freedom – or for love? With its thrilling plot, unforgettable characters and soaring passion, Puccini’s Tosca is the ultimate romantic opera, and melodies like Vissi d’arte, Recondita armonia and E lucevan le stelle have made it one of the world’s best-loved operas for over a century. Bryn Terfel has chosen his own Tosca and Cavaradossi with other roles coming from the Liverpool-based European Opera Centre. Vasily Petrenko conducts, and Terfel reprises one of his supreme roles – the dangerously charismatic Baron Scarpia – in this dramatic concert performance. An unmissable climax to The Art of Bryn Terfel.

*From composer on the Sound and Music Portfolio scheme Clark Rundell director Did you realise that we’re living in a quiet golden age for contemporary classical music in the North West? Tonight Ensemble 10/10 salutes some of its freshest and most inventive voices. Edwin Roxburgh’s Serenata dates from 1982, and it’s already a powerful modern classic. As for Stephen Pratt and Anthony Gilbert – well, their music is so new that we can’t tell you what to expect, other than their renowned imagination and vibrant energy. And the same goes for Ian Stephens’ tribute to the late great clarinettist Thea King, who loved telling limericks.

Tonight the Orchestra and an all-star cast enjoy a different kind of classic – and give them the deluxe treatment. Sit back, pour yourself an imaginary martini and let the silky strings of our full symphony orchestra and the show-stopping voices of top West End singers smooth your cares away. The award-winning 26-year-old conductor Joshua Weilerstein kicks off with Verdi’s melodramatic overture, before unleashing all his energy and verve on Prokofiev’s heart-rending ballet suite – so much more than just the theme to The Apprentice! And when the stunning French pianist Lise de la Salle joins him in Rachmaninov’s glittering First Piano Concerto; well, expect the sparks to light up the Hope Street sky.

James Clark String Quartet Thursday 24 October 1.05pm £6 Frank Bridge Three Idylls Britten String Quartet No.3 James Clark violin Rakhvinder Singh violin Jonathan Aasgaard cello

The 1970s: the decade of disco, big collars, and the Wallasey Tunnel. But three great composers were looking to the future and seeing magical new worlds. Britten’s Death in Venice imagines a haunted city in music of eerie beauty. His friend Shostakovich heard the beat of time itself amidst the jokes and puzzles of his extraordinary last symphony. And Luciano Berio went back to the future and customised an 18th-century classic into a technicolor orchestral mysterytour which was premiered by the Orchestra in 1971. If you’ve heard Vasily Petrenko’s performances of Shostakovich and Britten, you’ll already know to expect something very special. If you haven’t, join us in Britten’s centenary year for a different kind of 70s nostalgia. This concert is part of The Rest Is Noise festival at Southbank Centre, where the concert will be repeated on 3 November. The Rest is Noise is a series of concerts and events bringing to life Alex Ross’s popular survey of 20th century music, The Rest Is Noise.

Britten’s rapturous musical dreamscape Les Illuminations is at the

COMEDY & SPOKEN WORD

Malcolm Gladwell Live!

The David and Goliath Tour Wednesday 30 October 7.30pm £15, £18

Image: Stewart Lee

Bill Bailey: Qualmpeddler Friday 4 & Saturday 5 October 8pm £25, £31 Following his recent sell-out tour of Australia and New Zealand, Bill Bailey returns to Liverpool Philharmonic for two nights with his brand new live show. The gig will have all the classic Bill Bailey elements; trademark musical mash-ups, multi-lingual riffs, films, songs, philosophising and silliness on a grand scale… Plus one amazing owl.

Stewart Lee: Much A-Stew About Nothing Sunday 13 October 8pm £20, £26 Following the sell-out Carpet Remnant World, the acclaimed writer and comedian presents a mixed stew of unrelated ideas in preparation for his 2014 TV series. See it live so you can begin the backlash ahead of transmission.

Gladwell is the bestselling author of The Tipping Point, Blink and Outliers. His brilliant and illuminating new book David and Goliath will overturn conventional thinking about power and advantage. Inspiring, brilliant and entertaining, Gladwell returns to Liverpool Philharmonic to take us on a surprise journey through the hidden dynamics that shape the balance of power between the small and the mighty, he tells us stories of underdogs, misfits and the art of battling giants and will be signing copies of his new book after the show. ‘A brilliant story-teller … immense fun’ The Guardian ‘Inspiring and revelatory’ The Times ‘Fizzingly entertaining and enlightening’ Daily Mail

Sean Lock: Purple Van Man Saturday 26 October 8pm £22, £28

An Evening with

Ray Mears The Outdoor Life Tuesday 8 October 7.30pm £22.50, £25, £31 A fascinating and entertaining evening with the worldwide authority on bushcraft and

survival. Mears acquired his unique skills through his work in some of the world’s most uninhabitable and harshest environments. This compelling show finds Mears sharing some of his favourite moments and stories from over thirty years of surviving the wilderness and its wildlife.

We all know what white van man thinks about the world we live in but its time to hear a different voice, purple van man’s voice. Filled with gags, opinions, deft observations and some silly voices this is Sean Lock doing what he does best, spouting inspired jibber jabber as he crosses the country in his purple van. He will make you laugh like a drunken horse. Lock is one of the UK’s most highly acclaimed and original comedians. The British Comedy Award winner has been a brilliant team captain for fourteen series of Channel 4’s show 8 Out of 10 Cats. And his extensive TV credits also include appearances on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, QI and Mock the Week.

‘Lock’s signature mix of absurdism and everyday observation gets more effective with each new show’ The Guardian

Monday 2 December 8pm £25, £31

Ardal O’Hanlon Saturday 2 November 8pm £20, £26 Best known for his starring roles in the sitcoms, Father Ted (for which he won a British Comedy Award and a BAFTA nomination) and My Hero Ardal O’Hanlon makes his Liverpool Philharmonic debut with his brand new stand-up show. The style is observational,

the subject matter is life itself, and the default expression is one of utter disbelief! Lurking beneath this brilliant performer’s mild-mannered demeanour resides a sharp and probing comic brain. In this show he’ll talk about not just the things that matter but also about the things that don’t matter at all, which covers pretty much everything.

Following a sold-out 2012 tour, three Olivier Award nominations and over 10 million YouTube hits for Cheap Flights (their infamous ode to budget air travel), Dillie Keane, Adele Anderson and Liza Pulman celebrate 30 years of Fascinating Aïda with a brand new show. Expect topical new songs hot off the press, plus some outrageous old favourites, as Fascinating Aïda continue to grow old disgracefully.

Star of BAFTA award-winning The Inbetweeners and BBC Three’s Cuckoo, much-loved towering beacon of comedy Greg Davies is one of the most successful stand-ups in the UK. Following a sold-out 2012 tour and due to popular demand, his critically-acclaimed and riotously funny show, The Back of My Mum’s Head, comes to Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Ken Dodd’s Happiness Show Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 December 7pm £16, £18, £20, £25

Homotopia 10th Anniversary

Sandi Toksvig: My Valentine Tuesday 5 November 8pm £20, £26 The ‘wonderfully sharp’ (Time Out) Sandi Toksvig, comedian, novelist, actor, broadcaster, showoff and international treasure continues her smash hit sell-out solo tour, described by The Times as ‘captivating’ and ‘excellent’, with this Liverpool show. Longstanding host of BBC Radio 4’s News Quiz and Excess Baggage and regular QI panellist, Toksvig performs this uniquely witty evening of stand-up, stories and fascinating facts. She will also sign copies of her novel Valentine Grey after the show. ‘Laden with laughs’ The Guardian ‘Brash charm... surprising emotion’ The Sunday Times

John Waters in This Filthy World Friday 8 November 8pm £20, £26 The incomparable writer, director and actor John Waters’ one-man show is a ‘vaudeville’ act that celebrates the film career and obsessional tastes of the man William Burroughs once called ‘The Pope of Trash’.

The creator of Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Serial Mom and more than a dozen other cult hits focuses on his early negative artistic influences and his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy, and the extremes of the contemporary art world. This joyously devious monologue elevates all that is trashy in life into a call to arms to ‘filth followers’ everywhere.

Join Ken Dodd and his special guests for his hilarious Christmas show. Your festive celebrations just aren’t complete without a marathon of jokes, fun, songs and happiness courtesy of Knotty Ash’s finest. If you haven’t experienced the annual Liverpool fixture then now is the time.
