Barb Jungr Thursday 29 & Friday 30 November 8.30pm £15
Oh Susanna Tuesday 4 December 8.30pm £12
Barb Jungr may be the definitive performer of one of the great musical icons of the twentieth century, Bob Dylan. In 2005 the BBC hosted a Barbican concert to celebrate his work. In introducing Jungr, Billy Bragg described her as ‘possibly our best interpreter of Dylan’s songs’. He is not alone in this view, as Jungr has been wowing audiences and critics worldwide with her astonishingly powerful reinterpretations of this great songwriter’s work. In a career spanning just over a decade, Oh Susanna (her real name is Suzie Ungerleider) has released five critically acclaimed records noted for their contemplative, thoughtful, folk-inspired songs that transport listeners into an imaginary emotional landscape. Short Stories and Oh Susanna were nominated for Junos Roots and Traditional Album of the Year and Short Stories picked up the award for Best Songwriter at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Her latest release Soon The Birds brings her breathtakingly effortless countrified alto vocals into the foreground. All her songs aim straight for the gut and beg for careful listening - touching on timeless themes of love, loss and longing.

A Night in Vienna
John Wilson conductor Sarah Fox soprano Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Friday 28 December 7.30pm £16, £21, £28, £33, £40
The pop of a champagne cork, the rustle of silk, and an irresistible rhythm… no city knows how to celebrate like Vienna. And there’s no cocktail more intoxicating than the swirl of a waltz and the glamorous sound of a full symphony orchestra. This festive season, maestro John Wilson takes you to the ball with Franz Lehár – the master of champagne operetta – and of course the Waltz King himself, Johann Strauss II. Soprano Sarah Fox sprinkles the stardust, and you’ll already know the tunes: Emperor Waltz, Thunder and Lightning, Tritsch-Tratsch Polka and – it goes without saying – The Blue Danube. Let us waltz you off your feet!

John Cooper Clarke Plus special guests Mike Garry and Luke Wright ‘The Bard of Salford’ shot to prominence in the 70s as the original punk poet whose sparse, rapid-fire prose defined the experiences of inner city life. He became one of the leading voices of youth culture appearing on the same bill as bands such as The Sex Pistols, Joy Division and Elvis Costello. He is a festival favourite and bands including Arctic Monkeys and Reverend And The Makers cite him as a major influence on them, his poem Evidently Chickentown even features in TV gangster drama The Sopranos.

Inspired to Perform At St. Mary’s College, academic excellence comes as standard. We celebrated another fantastic set of exam results in 2011, with 98% of our pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A*– C grade and a 97% pass rate at A Level. However, success at St. Mary’s is measured by much more than examination results. We are a centre of excellence for music and our choirs, orchestras and bands perform regularly at home and abroad, with the annual Festival of Music at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall each spring a particular highlight. Add to this the outstanding achievements in drama, dance, art and on the sports field and you will see that our pupils are inspired to perform in more ways than one.
