Enescu Dixtuor, Op.14 John McCabe Symphony for Ten Wind Instruments Dvor˘àk Wind Serenade – Jonathan Small oboe/director

We can’t squeeze the whole orchestra into the stunning surroundings of St George’s Hall, but Joint Leader Thelma Handy and string players from the Orchestra come together to bring you something special for a summer evening. Mendelssohn wrote his Octet for Strings as a birthday gift for his friend and violin teacher; Rossini wrote his Sonata for Strings in the summer of 1804 at the age of 12 for his patron; and Grieg’s Holberg Suite, written in 1884 as a celebration of the playwright Ludvig Holberg, is a charming suite of musical forms from the 18th century, filled with the spirit of Grieg. –

Let Principal Oboe Jonathan Small and musicians from the Orchestra serenade you with a programme that brings flavours from Romania and hints of Slavonic dances. Dvořàk’s Wind Serenade, written in 14 days (!) is wholly Czech in character. As soon as this music was in print, Brahms described it as Dvořàk’s greatest work… “A more lovely, refreshing impression of real, rich and charming creative talent you can’t easily have... I think it must be a pleasure for the wind players!” We hope this evening is a pleasure for you too! –
