Across four wonderful albums, the band have constantly added new flavours to their music, with the newest releases adding twangy 60s guitar tones and modernist R&B styles.
The Real Thing, with original vocalists Chris Amoo and Dave Smith and their live five-piece band, will perform A Brand New Day, their first album of original material in 44 years. Their new soulful single, ‘Hang On Never Let Go’, will be special for those who grew up in the 70s and 80s listening to their classic hits, such as ‘You To Me Are Everything’, ‘Can’t Get By Without You’, and ‘Can You Feel the Force’.
Formed in 2019, The People Versus borrow from a variety of genres and traditions. Their combined voices and instrumental lines swoop, circle and support the beguiling voice and personality of lead singer, Alice Edwards. Each song is taut with feeling and longing, with many inspired by Greek myth and tales from Shakespeare. Their early recordings received support from BBC Introducing, and their 2021 singles earned BBC Radio airplay and placements at international film festivals. Premium seating for this event will be presented cabaret style and standard seating will be presented theatre style.

Beethoven’s Emperor
A morning mist cloaks a rural landscape and two horns call softly in the distance. From the very opening of Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony, you know you’re destined for something vast and beautiful. When Andrew Manze recorded it with the Orchestra, one critic described the result as “unsurpassed, and quite possibly unsurpassable”. Today, he brings the same magic touch to the neglected music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (Elgar was a fan) and Mendelssohn’s hugely popular violin concerto, with Sebastian Bohren as soloist.

Mendelssohn Overture, The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave) Haydn Cello Concerto in D Tchaikovsky Manfred Symphony Vasily Petrenko conductor Alban Gerhardt cello Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Cast out of society, Manfred takes to the mountains. Lord Byron didn’t do understatement – but Tchaikovsky sensed a kindred spirit, and his epic Manfred Symphony contains some of the most thrilling music he ever wrote. For Vasily Petrenko, it’s a passion – an explosive climax to a concert that begins with Mendelssohn’s Scottish seascape and stars cellist Alban Gerhardt in Haydn’s elegant concerto. He’s been called “a magician”, and you’ll hear why.

Tchaikovsky knew exactly how he felt, and poured everything into 50 minutes (including a part for organ!) of the most personal music he ever wrote. Is this the greatest symphony you’ve never heard? Vasily Petrenko’s mad about it, and to set the scene he’s joined by the brilliant Alban Gerhardt to play the rarely-heard, but gloriously tuneful cello concerto by Tchaikovsky’s friend, Anton Rubinstein.

The music of Sibelius gets under your skin like that, and in this Liverpool debut for the award-winning Finnish conductor Emilia Hoving, you’ll hear sounds of nature and triumph, as well as the swan’s haunting song. Plus, of course, the golden sound of superstar violinist Henning Kraggerud, in the heart-melting melodies of Tchaikovsky’s sunlit Violin Concerto. The orchestra thunders, the skies turn black... and then things start to get silly. Really silly. Dohnányi’s Variations on a Nursery Tune is one of music’s all-time comedy classics, and although we don’t want to give away the punchline, it’s no secret that Isata Kanneh-Mason has created quite a buzz here in recent seasons. This is going to be fun, and with Domingo Hindoyan conducting Bartók’s rarely heard The Wooden Prince with huge orchestral forces, and finally Dvořák’s New World symphony – you’re going to be spoiled for good tunes.

From Oscar-nominated visionary filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, comes the biographical musical drama Elvis, starring Austin Butler and Oscar winner Tom Hanks. The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.

“To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield”. The story of Captain Scott’s tragic voyage to the South Pole is one of the greatest of all adventures, and the 1948 film Scott of the Antarctic is a true classic of British cinema, shot in spectacular full-colour. Naturally, they asked Vaughan Williams to write the score and now, in his 150th anniversary year, we get to hear his extraordinary music in full-colour too, as the Orchestra, Choir, soprano soloist and Andrew Manze accompany the film, live in concert. The score later formed the basis of his Sinfonia antartica (Symphony No.7).
Part of director Peter Jackson’s three-part documentary The Beatles: Get Back, The Rooftop Concert presents a full 60-minute film of the Beatles’ landmark final performance atop their Apple Corps’ Savile Row headquarters. Marking over fifty years since the show, the film’s image and sound quality have been digitally remastered in a staggering restoration effort, providing an unforgettable tribute to the final years of one of the most beloved bands of all time. Based on Roger McGough’s PC Plod poems, Plod is a series of quick comic sketches performed by The Scaffold - the comedy, poetry and music trio from Liverpool consisting of Mike McGear (real name Peter Michael McCartney, the brother of Paul McCartney), poet Roger McGough, and comic entertainer John Gorman.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horrors Monday 31 October 8pm Music Room £15, £12
Nosferatu is arguably the film that gave birth to the horror genre. Notable as the first cinematic interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, its combination of expressionistic acting and unforgettable images render it just as powerful and unsettling today as when it first thrilled cinema goers 100 years ago. Chris Green’s haunting new score was originally commissioned for a live screening of the film at Dracula’s spiritual home of Whitby Abbey, and combined with F.W. Murnau’s iconic images, it makes for a remarkable and unique cinematic experience.

Director Brian Henson Starring Michael Caine The Muppets reimagine Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol by adding a hilarious and heartfelt touch of Muppet magic. Ebeneezer Scrooge is a wicked, cold-hearted moneylender, angered by the Christmas spirit of his colleague Bob Cratchit (played by Kermit the Frog) and those around him. However, the arrival of the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future teach him to embrace the warmth and good will that comes with Christmas time.
Meet Me in St. Louis (cert U) Director Bruce Robinson Starring Paul McGann, Richard E. Grant, Richard Griffiths London, 1969. Fed up with damp, cold, piles of washing-up, mad drug dealers and psychotic Irishmen, a pair of substance-abusing, perpetually out-of-work actors decide to leave their squalid Camden flat for an idyllic holiday in the countryside. But when Withnail and Marwood arrive in Cornwall, it doesn’t seem much better than London – and things are not helped by the arrival of Withnail’s Uncle Monty.
Love Actually tells ten separate, yet interweaving stories of love around Christmas time. The film features an all-star ensemble cast, including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Bill Nighy, Martine McCutcheon, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, Rowan Atkinson, Martin Freeman and more. A full, live orchestra will perform BAFTA-winning composer Craig Armstrong’s evocative score, with the film being projected onto a huge screen.
