‘[they] create something that is at once new and timeless.’ Wall Street Journal ‘[their] ambitious name reflects its intention to make up-to-the-minute music that draws upon the glorious past of African-American genres. As the title suggests, the group rises to the occasion.’ NPR Music
This N.Y.C.-based blues collective are emerging as one of the most exciting acts on the US scene. Their rollicking, horn-enhanced, multi-layered sound and spicy New Orleans jazz strains is an inspiring testament to the enduring power and boundless beauty of African-American music. They draw on field hollers and work songs, covers of the immortal Muddy Waters, Son House and Leadbelly, as well as their own original tunes. From the riveting Chaney Sims and her father Bill’s a cappella work songs to Junior Mack’s heaven-sent voice and searing slide guitar, you’ll recognize this group as something breathtakingly new even as old African-American musical traditions permeate everything. What at first seems simply a loving celebration of the past emerges as a whole new adventure in music.

Returning after the success of her 2012 debut at Liverpool Philharmonic ‘Wow’ features Maaike Breijman performing in the role of Kate Bush, with whom she shares a birthday, an uncanny resemblance in appearance, performance and vocal style. Since the release of her debut album, 1978’s The Kick Inside, Kate Bush has toured just the once, performing just 25 shows in 1979. Despite this Bush’s albums are still as popular today as they were upon release. The first live date of Bush’s one and only tour started in Liverpool in 1979 and it is only fitting that Maaike return to the city over 30 years later to astound audiences as she sings Bush’s greatest songs and performs dance routines live on stage with a full troupe of musicians, dancers and state of the art light and video show. Ginger Baker is recognised as ‘one of Britain’s great drummers’ (Melody Maker). He made a groundbreaking record with Fela Kuti and toured with The Who, The Troggs, The Moody Blues and Chuck Berry, he was known for his outrageous behaviour and riotous fun, at the time, and was once talked about as ‘the musician least likely to survive the 60s’. Now he’s back with a new and remarkable project. Ginger Baker’s Jazz Confusion, starring Pee Wee Ellis on sax, Alec Dankworth on bass and Abass Dodoo on percussion, made its 2012 debut at Ronnie Scott’s Club. Their show sold out four times bringing the crowd a powerful fusion of Jazz and African rhythms. Building from his gritty Sheffield origins into a cultural icon, Hawley’s career includes years performing with great British bands Longpigs and Pulp, and collaborations with Arctic Monkeys and Elbow. His significant solo career has spanned no less than 7 albums, including this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize nominated Standing at the Sky’s Edge. Hawley’s live performances captivate with a timeless grace and irrepressible swagger.

Thompson is perhaps one of this country’s greatest songwriters and most distinctive guitar virtuosos, capable of breathtaking drama and sublime delicacy. Rolling Stone magazine hail him as ‘a perennial dark-horse contender for the title of greatest living rock guitarist’. His songs have been covered by everyone from Alison Krauss to Robert Plant. This concert marks the release of his new album Electric out this February. Clannad entwine the traditional and the modern with their haunting songs, mesmerizing vocals, and captivating sound. The group has sold over 15 million records worldwide, helped create solo star Enya and won numerous awards over the years, including Billboard’s World Song of the Year and a Grammy for Best New Age Album. The acclaimed Irish group consists of family members who began by drawing inspiration from their home in the remote northwest coast of Ireland. For this close-knit group, their musical journey is both remarkable in its personal accomplishment and historic in its contributions to Irish culture. It is indeed fascinating to consider that what today is so widely regarded as Celtic music was first called ‘Clannad music.’ The Grammy Award nominated singer-songwriter and guitarist is a Country Music Association Song Of The Year Award winner and has found huge success composing hits for Etta James, Neil Diamond and co-writing songs with Bryan Adams. Peters’ wistful classic country voice and guitar is at the core of her own timeless music. Her latest album Hello Cruel World details the sheer triumph of survival and of finding strength and joy in everyday life. Peters’ warm-honey voice softens the edge of desperation; the earthy maturity of her phrasing injects empathy, a quality that makes Peters’ songs ring consistently true.

Live, with his band, Lee performs we should celebrate folk, not unconventional and contemporary interpretations only as a musical movement challenging all preconceptions of what ‘traditional but as a lifestyle’ Vogue UK folk’ should sound like and winning converts from all quarters including at last year’s Hope Street Feast.

Sunday 7 April 7.30pm £23, £25, £30
Dennis Locorriere has one of the finest voices ever, his vocals are immediately recognised all over the world as the voice of Dr Hook. The group achieved enormous success with hits including Sylvia’s Mother, When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman and A Little Bit More. As a solo performer his popularity is such that he has now played to over 1 million people in the UK alone on his own tours and Locorriere’s voice has graced sales of more than 50 million records, he is the only member of Dr Hook involved with every record they released. Brown goes from strength to strength as his contemporary achievements continue to gather momentum. His ‘Very Best Of’ album went Gold with 100,000 sales, he recently received MOJO magazine’s coveted Outstanding Contribution To Music Award and has been honoured with an MBE. A terrific live talent, he and his band pack their show with timeless classics, rockabilly, gospel, country, folk, and rock ‘n’ roll, all interwoven with Brown’s effervescent delivery and humorous reminiscences. This eclectic show of musical skill is as unique as the man himself.

Ludovico Einaudi has been creating music for films over the last year - you can hear his music on Untouchable and This is England - and his new album is released in February. Einaudi has become one of the UK’s most popular pianists and composers. His music is ambient, meditative and often introspective. His sweeping compositions are deeply touching, and draw inspiration from classical and international music, minimalism, and contemporary pop, but always with the piano at the heart of the sound. Having sold over 30 million records so far, Ocean is the biggest black recording star Britain has ever produced. He became a worldwide star, performing in the American leg of Live Aid and picking up a Grammy Award. His numerous UK and US hit singles include Love on Delivery, Stop Me, Red Light Spells Danger, Caribbean Queen for which he won a Grammy Award for best R&B Vocal, Loverboy and Suddenly which became the first of Ocean’s killer ballads. Followed by When the Going gets Tough (the tough gets going), There’ll be Sad Songs (to make you cry) and the now iconic Get Outta my Dreams; Get into my Car. Edwyn Collins will release his eighth solo album, Understated, through his own label AED early in 2013. The album has been produced and recorded by Collins and Seb Lewsley at their West Heath Yard studio. It is his first since Losing Sleep was released to widespread acclaim in September 2010. In the last year the former Orange Juice man has also begun work on a film about his life and music titled In Your Voice, In Your Heart.

Lau is three brilliant musicians, thrilling performers and free-thinking visionaries. Their new album Race The Loser pushes their complex, yet accessible sound, to the outer reaches of folk music whilst retaining all the strengths of the original acoustic trio (Kris Drever Vocals/Guitar, Martin Green Accordion, Aidan O’Rourke Fiddle). Released in October the new album was recorded with American producer Tucker Martine (Sufjan Stevens, R.E.M. Laura Veirs). The band has won an unprecedented three consecutive Best Group at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and are an intoxicating live experience. Relive the 60s with original artists singing their greatest hits. Now in its 28th year, the show features the unforgettable talents of Mike Pender - the original voice of The Searchers, Dave Berry and Wayne Fontana, all backed by New Amen Corner, plus very special guests The Merseybeats. Hear the classic hits performed by the original hit-makers. World-famous violinist Nigel Kennedy presents a typically maverick musical programme celebrating the music of Bach and Fats Waller. The concert begins with Bach for solo violin, after which he is joined on stage by an acoustic guitarist, a drummer and a double bass player to perform Kennedy’s own arrangements of the music of the legendary Fats Waller. As Kennedy puts it himself ‘playing Bach and Fats Waller on one show is a dream for me – two amazing keyboard players, both masters of harmony and melody.’

As his new album’s title relates, Loudon Wainwright III is Older Than My Old Man Now. His new songs are characteristically wry musings on the sage of life the cult singer songwriter finds himself in. With a recording career that spans a total of 25 albums, Wainwright’s songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs and Rufus Wainwright, among others. Robert Vincent & Peter Bruntnell Saturday 2 February 8.30pm £12
If there’s a lot of half-finished, vaguely unsatisfying music around - songs that say nothing to you about your life - then maybe it’s because the people who make it haven’t lived much of a life themselves. Not so in the case of Vincent, nominee of Best Male Artist at the inaugural Liverpool Music Awards this year, he’s a searingly honest Liverpool singer-songwriter whose mix of folk, rock and country has him described as a Mersey Van Morrison. Peter Bruntnell completes this perfectly formed double bill. The NME demanded ‘Bruntnell’s records should be taught in schools’, they were referring to the quiet Devonian’s songwriting craft. His 2009 release Peter And The Murder Of Crows, filled with psychedelic drones and mellifluous tunes, was Americana Album Of The Month in MOJO Magazine and one of Q magazine’s Americana Albums Of The Year.

With echoes of Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLauchlan in her songwriting, Anna Corcoran is emerging as a star of Liverpool’s live music scene. The singer, songwriter and pianist is creating quite a stir with her astonishing delivery, soulful folky sound and beautiful songs. In this excellent double bill Amelia Curran returns by demand after her stunning After 8 debut in summer last year. Curran’s achingly beautiful songs sneak up on you. They aren’t showy, there are no gimmicks, yet listen after listen, her melodies gain traction and little bits of the lyrics stick in your head. See her perform them live and you’ll understand why, although not yet a big star in the UK, she is making waves back home in Canada. Becoming firm After 8 favourites the dynamic duo return once again performing stripped down acoustic versions of old and new Wonder Stuff songs. On what they’ve now dubbed as the ‘never-ending tour’ they return to the Rodewald Suite, due to popular demand, playing their own tunes and of course Wonder Stuff classics.
Lamb is known by aficionados and music press around the world as one of the greatest blues harmonica players of our time. He, and his regular band The King Snakes, have won countless awards and Lamb has been inducted into the British Blues Awards Hall Of Fame alongside the likes of Peter Green, John Mayall and Alexis Korner. Making up this acoustic duo is the talented blues singer and guitarist Chad Strentz who joined The King Snakes in 1991. A second After 8 visit for this fabulous duo. Amy Wadge’s voice is simply amazing with breathtaking range and emotional impact. She is winner of a Welsh Music Award for Best Female Solo Artist and has opened shows for Van Morrison, Damien Rice, Eric Bibb and Jeff Beck. Pete Riley is a singer/songwriter from Liverpool who has toured for the last decade with Edwin McCain and recently with Henry Priestman.

Since their first appearance in 1993, Coope Boyes and Simpson’s powerful and distinctive unaccompanied singing and songwriting have taken English roots into new realms. Describing them as ‘quite simply the best purveyors of acappella song on these Islands’, the trio’s first record, Funny Old World, Q Magazine named it Roots Album of the Year. The BBC Folk website simply listed all their albums as recommended listening. Liverpool guitarist Brian ‘Nasher’ Nash, with friends Peter Gill and Holly Johnson, formed a band in 1980, they eventually went on to become one of the biggest of the 80s with their logo adorning a million t-shirts; Frankie Goes to Hollywood, only the second act in the history of the UK charts to reach number one with their first three singles (Gerry & the Pacemakers were first). Nasher has released several solo albums featuring his guitar driven pop sound and in November 2012 launched his autobiography Nasher Says Relax.
Belinda O’Hooley (The Unthanks) and Heidi Tidow are the chamber-folk duo behind The Fragile, their genre-defying new album. Their debut Silent June, was one of MOJO Magazine’s Top 10 Folk Albums of 2010. The duo’s beautifully unusual songs touch on everything from dark folk tales, ecology and cross-dressing historical figures through to the invisibility of the elderly and the global economy. Live, they are an irresistible blend of thought-provoking song, striking arrangements, sublime harmonies and cheeky Yorkshire banter.

Inspired to Perform At St. Mary’s College, academic excellence comes as standard. We celebrated another fantastic set of exam results in 2012, with 100% of our pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A*– C grade and a 100% pass rate at A Level. However, success at St. Mary’s is measured by much more than examination results. We are a centre of excellence for music and our choirs, orchestras and bands perform regularly at home and abroad, with the annual Festival of Music at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall each spring a particular highlight. Add to this the outstanding achievements in drama, dance, art and on the sports field and you will see that our pupils are inspired to perform in more ways than one.
