Carrack’s marvellously soulful voice is known to millions around the world; he is undoubtedly a key figure in British pop history.
In 1964 Jacqui McDonald, with her late singing partner Bridie O'Donnell, formed the first full-time British female folk duo. They also created Liverpool's celebrated monthly Folk Club. It was an early platform for performers such as Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger, Martin Carthy, Barbara Dickson, Tom Paxton, Maddy Prior and Phil Ochs. The club also provided a space for the exchange of ideas amongst other aspiring Liverpool artists including Willy Russell, Arthur Dooley, Stan Kelly and Alvin Stardust. Jacqui & Bridie's influence on Liverpool's music, culture and life is perhaps incalculable, so join Jacqui McDonald and her friends for the last ever Jacqui & Bridie's Folk Club. With a fabulous line up of special guest singers and musicians from the club's past and present, performing the duo's music and folk classics, they celebrate Jacqui & Bridie's unique talent and their role in the history of Liverpool's music scene.

The Three B's
Acker Bilk, Chris Barber & Kenny Ball Friday 20 May 7.30pm £23, £28
‘It must be said there was little that even the most critical could fault.’ Liverpool Daily Post
Folk song-smith Wainwright’s recording career spans a total of 23 albums, and in 2009 he won the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. His 2010 album 10 Songs For The New Depression is a lovely sounding record and a brilliantly topical attempt to explain the current economic climate, and cheer us all up.
Returning after last year’s sell out show the ‘Dream Team’ of trad is brought together again. The fantasy front line during the trad jazz boom - those heady days between Bill Haley and The Beatles - would have been Kenny Ball on trumpet, Chris Barber on trombone and Acker Bilk on clarinet. They never played together then, though their three bands totally dominated the scene for years. Ball, Barber & Bilk play the hits and the trad favourites - the very best that traditional jazz has to offer.

The founding member of the award winning band Beabach has won many admirers with his upbeat mix of guitar and vocals. Fletcher is best known as the bass player with the famous The Blues Band. Classical Music
For sheer entertainment and effortless style, there’s nothing to beat a classic Fred Astaire musical, so let John Wilson and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra whirl you back to an age of pure glamour. West End legends Gary Williams and Kim Criswell sing Top Hat, Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, Cheek to Cheek and a whole, toe-tapping chorus-line of favourites with a sumptuous full orchestra playing MGM’s fabulous original arrangements. Dichterlieben Schumann Dichterliebe Op.48
Songs by Liszt, Ives, Grieg, Mendelssohn and Killmayer, based on poems by Heine.
Wolfgang Holzmair is the consummate lieder-singer, and Schumann’s Dichterliebe is the consummate romantic song-cycle. Tonight, Holzmair brings all his vocal sensitivity to Schumann’s masterpiece.
Beethoven Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No.1
Vasily Petrenko conductor Ilya Gringolts violin Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
They were calling it ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’ before he’d even finished composing it. And they weren’t far wrong. Brahms poured everything he had into his mighty First Symphony, a stirring and deeply-felt spiritual journey from tragedy to triumph, crowned with one of classical music’s truly unforgettable melodies. Ludwig would have been proud – but even he took the odd break from storm and stress, and he never wrote anything sunnier or more serenely beautiful than his glorious Violin Concerto.

A uproarious full-length comic opera by the 16-year old Felix Mendelssohn. If you know his String Octet or A Midsummer Night’s Dream, you’ll know to expect sparkling music and buckets of youthful energy. But even if you don’t, you won’t be able to resist the sheer fun of this dramatised performance – the latest collaboration between the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the singers of the European Opera Centre.
