Welcome...

In the autumn of 2015, during the 175th anniversary year of our founding by a small group of Liverpool music lovers in 1840, we completed the major refurbishment of our home, the Grade II*listed Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

The refurbishment programme began as an ambition barely three years ago in 2012. It became a possibility and then quickly a reality, thanks to the support of our Principal Funders, Arts Council England and Liverpool City Council, many trusts and foundations and corporate partners, and the great generosity of many individual donors. The Hall refurbishment has enabled us to greatly improve the facilities for our audiences, resident musicians in the Orchestra and visiting artists; and enabled us to build a brand new venue, Music Room (see page 9), located at the rear of the Hall. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko is now in his tenth year at the helm. This dynamic musical partnership has attracted international critical and audience acclaim and awards. The continuation of the Orchestra’s 2015/16 concert season includes new music commissioned for our 175th

anniversary celebrations, with the world premiere of Ludovico Einaudi’s Piano Concerto, performed by by the young Chinese pianist Ji Liu (see page 23), one of many highlights. Liverpool Philharmonic’s learning programme is widely acknowledged as a national leader in its field, offering a range of inspirational opportunities to get involved in live music-making of the highest quality for thousands of children and adults (see page 18). We continue to develop these opportunities and recently announced the expansion of our In Harmony Liverpool programme in Everton. In Harmony aims to inspire and transform the lives of children through community-based music-making (see page 16).

Over 175 years, Liverpool Philharmonic has never stood still. It has always evolved to serve Liverpool as a central partner in its cultural, civic and economic life, and as a proud ambassador for our City across the UK and internationally.

Critics are running out of adjectives for the young Russian piano virtuoso Boris Giltburg – but if you’ve heard him performing with the Orchestra in previous seasons, you won’t need any further recommendation. And when he teams up with Vasily Petrenko in Russian music, something very special happens. Don’t miss this chance to hear this dynamic duo in both of Shostakovich’s Piano Concertos: the cheerful, romantic Second and the brilliantly witty First. Viennese Masters

Thursday 31 March 7.30pm & Friday 1 April 7.30pm £14, £20, £26, £31, £40 – Haydn Symphony No.96 ‘Miracle’ Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3 Brahms Symphony No.1 – Vasily Petrenko conductor Fazıl Say piano Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra – They called it “Beethoven’s Tenth” – and Brahms spent ten years writing his First Symphony. The result is one of those pieces that you just have to experience live. For Vasily Petrenko, it’s more than worthy to stand alongside Beethoven’s darkest, most personal piano concerto, performed by a great Turkish pianist Fazıl Say.

Northern Dreams

Thursday 7 April 7.30pm £14, £20, £26, £31, £40 – Hugo Alfvén Swedish Rhapsody No.1 ‘Midsommarvaka’ (Midsummer Vigil) Barber Violin Concerto Sibelius Symphony No.2 – Vasily Petrenko conductor Tai Murray violin Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra – Sibelius thought of his Second Symphony as a great river flowing to the sea. Others have heard a musical portrait of a nation waking to freedom. It’s all of this and much, much more; music of brooding power, spring-like freshness and truly epic grandeur. Vasily Petrenko takes us on Sibelius’s journey today, and introduces the shamelessly enjoyable Swedish Rhapsody by Sibelius’s contemporary Hugo Alfvén – we think you’ll recognise the tunes! Violinist Tai Murray needs no introduction in Liverpool: this chance to hear her in Barber’s soaring Violin Concerto practically recommends itself! www.liverpoolphil.com/dreams – Post Concert Discussion see page 18 Sponsored by

National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain

Saturday 9 April 7.30pm £5 - £20 – Stravinsky Fireworks Daugherty Fire and Blood, concerto for violin and orchestra Stravinsky The Firebird (1911) full ballet – National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain Kristjan Järvi conductor Chad Hoopes violin – The world's greatest orchestra of teenagers burns bright in this electrifying sound experience conducted by vibrant musical personality Kristjan Järvi. Join virtuosic young soloist Chad Hoopes and 'the most uplifting orchestra in the world' (The Times), for Fire and Blood, a concerto by one of America's greatest composers Michael Daugherty. It's highly charged music, describing the fiery furnances of 1930's America car assembly lines, with colourful orchestration and pulsing rhythms. In contrast Stravinsky’s masterpiece The Firebird is a romantic sparkling fairy-tale ballet based on the Russian legend, wonderfully showcasing every instrument in the orchestra.

Emperor

Thursday 21 April 7.30pm & Friday 22 April 7.30pm £14, £20, £26, £31, £40 – Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 ‘Emperor’ Franck Le Chasseur Maudit (The Accursed Huntsman) Schumann Symphony No.4 – Darrell Ang conductor Nobuyuki Tsujii piano Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra – What’s your definition of Romantic? A huntsman galloping through a stormy night? A revolutionary warrior storming the barricades of freedom? Or a composer slipping a quiet love-letter into the pages of a tragic symphony? Guest conductor Darrell Ang explores four different shades of romance, from César Franck’s spooky musical spine-chiller to Schumann’s most personal symphony – with the phenomenal

Nobuyuki Tsujii bringing his own unforgettable blend of brilliance and poetry to Beethoven’s mighty ‘Emperor’ concerto. If you heard his Liverpool debut last season… well, say no more. Berlioz’ barnstorming overture sets things spinning in a blaze of Italian sunshine. www.liverpoolphil.com/emperor Sponsored by

Thursday 28 April 7.30pm £14, £20, £26, £31, £40 – Szymanowski Concert Overture, Op.12 Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Brahms Piano Quartet in G minor (orchestrated by Schoenberg) – Jacek Kaspszyk conductor Niu Niu piano Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra – Fantasy, humour, dazzling fireworks and a tune to die for… there’s a good reason why Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is quite simply one of the most popular piano works ever written. But every pianist makes it their own, and tonight we’re thrilled to welcome the teenage Chinese virtuoso Niu Niu, making his Liverpool debut in the grandest possible style. This is a deliriously romantic programme that sweeps from the film score gorgeousness of Szymanowski’s Concert Overture to the tender love songs and gypsy fiddles of Brahms’s Piano Quartet. Played by a full orchestra under Jacek Kaspszyk making a much awaited return visit to Liverpool, it might just be the greatest symphony Brahms never wrote! www.liverpoolphil.com/rhapsody – Discover the Classics see page 18.
