All or Nothing: The Mod Musical Friday 8 September 7.30pm Saturday 9 September 7.30pm Sunday 10 September 7.30pm £22, £25, £31 – In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘FACE’.

In a spectacular staging featuring 50 instruments from Merritt’s formidable collection, the seven-member band recounts his five decades on planet Earth.

Re-live 23 hits from the seldom-seen icon, such as: ‘Remember The Days Of The Old School’, ‘Lady D’Arbanville’, ‘Sad Lisa’ and ‘Peace Train’. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. Vasily Petrenko conductor Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Philip Glass is a composer who defines our age. From Hollywood blockbusters to the New York underground, in concert hall, opera house and nightclub, he electrifies everything he touches. So tonight, in his 80th birthday year, we make musical history with the UK premiere of Glass’s Eleventh Symphony. This is going to be big: be there and make two further discoveries, both equally magical, as Vasily Petrenko conducts a rare performance of Scriabin’s sweeping, romantic Second Symphony, plus Antonín Dvořák’s delightfully tuneful musical postcard from the New World.

Clark Rundell conductor ‘Tis the gift to be simple’, when Aaron Copland put an old Shaker hymn at the climax of Appalachian Spring, he’d stumbled on something fundamental about being American. Not that ‘simple’ means unsophisticated: Steve Reich, Andrew Norman and Nico Muhly all show that minimal means can lead to thrillingly unexpected ends – and even bridge the Atlantic. That’s the starting point, vibrant with potential, for a concert that, like everything Ensemble 10/10 does, is all about new musical worlds – which tonight means a premiere from the young Liverpool composer Richard Miller, our second Christopher Brooks Composition Prize winner, in association with the Rushworth Foundation. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra The drama, the passion, the spirit of song, all united by a burning passion to communicate: the music of Verdi was simply made for Sir Bryn Terfel. Tonight, he joins Vasily Petrenko and the massed Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir in possibly the most dramatic piece even Verdi ever wrote: his Requiem.
