Saturday, May 14 • 1:30 p.m. • Carman Drop in to play games, including classics Scrabble, Checkers and Battleship, plus newer favorites such as Giant Jenga and 4 in a Row. If the weather permits, there will be outdoor games in the garden.

Chess Club*^

Join fellow chess players for friendly competition. Community chess leader Mike Miller, a life member of the United Chess Federation, will be present to offer tips and suggestions. For players of all levels.

Adults Who Game^

A monthly meeting of adults who enjoy playing video games and tabletop games. The library’s Switch will be hooked up to the large projector and there will be a variety of video, tabletop and card games from which to choose. Feel free to bring your own. 18+.

Cozy Board Game Tea Party*

Keep Calm and Craft On!*^

Meet new friends and celebrate the May weather with a variety of teas and some light snacks. Feel free to bring whatever board games make you feel cozy, though games that take two hours or less are ideal. For newcomers to the hobby, we will be around to teach a selection of rules-light party games.

Celebrate your love of crafting! Show what you’ve been creating and participate in a crafting demonstration or a hands-on project. Check out our crafting program for youth happening at the same time in May!

This series of workshops will help creators develop rich and engaging settings. Writers, illustrators, game designers and fans of stories can all learn in this journey toward better worldbuilding.

Discover Picasso* Tuesday, June 21 6:30 p.m. • Carman

Discuss the life and artwork of Pablo Picasso and then stay for an instructional art workshop with Erna Eno. Eno will teach participants how to paint Picasso’s famous piece Self-Portrait, and also speak on the style known as Cubism. The class is intended for those 16+. A supply fee of $15 is payable to Eno by cash or check at the program.

Nature Connection Wellness* Tuesdays, May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 11:15 a.m. • Carman

Create a dish and show it off to like-minded chefs at the library! Theme-specific cookbooks are available at Information @ LPL Desk one month prior. May 16: Choose a Cookbook by Its Cover June 20: Celebrate Summer with Fruit

Wellness coach Gwen McCarroll returns with this feel-good healthy program that combines nature and wellness. Participants will connect with nature through mindfulness using senses and movement. If weather permits, the class may move outside.

Card Making with Renee*

Calling all moms for three hours of rest and relaxation. You will be pampered! Start with Visualscapes and Meditation Pampering led by wellness coach Gwen McCarroll, followed by soothing activities, thoughtful reflection and a special wind-down. A henna tattoo is available for $5. There will be giveaways!

For All Ages: Mini Art Masterpieces

Pick Up Starting May 2; Will be on display throughout June

Become a Mini Art Master with the LPL! Our Masterpiece Kits will include an easel, paint brush, paint container and six different paint colors! Return your masterpiece and the enclosed title card to the Information @ LPL or Children’s Room desk by Friday, May 27, so we can display your art in the library during June.

For All Ages: Storytelling with Vanessa Johnson: The Soft Whispers of Ancestors* Thursday, June 16 • 6:30 p.m. • Carman

Teller of tales Vanessa Johnson will help recognize the holiday of Juneteenth with a program that shares traditional tales from Africa, African-American culture and the African Diaspora. Johnson’s stories of Social Justice will represent the voices of the enslaved and abolitionists who fought against slavery. The Soft Whispers of Ancestors is designed for those 8+.

Health & Wellness

Orthodox Iconography and History Tour of St. Sophia’s Greek Church*

Tuesday, May 10 • 1 p.m. • Sargent

The Rev. David Smith, pastor at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church, will lead a virtual tour of the church’s recently completed renovation project. The presentation will highlight vivid and spiritual artwork, including a discussion of Orthodox iconography.

NAMI Syracuse: In Our Own Voice*

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Syracuse is an advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of all persons affected by mental illness through outreach, education and community collaboration. The non-profit NAMI group presents In Our Own Voice, a discussion to help combat the stigma of mental illness that will offer coping strategies for those with mental health conditions. In conjunction with this program, NAMI will have an art display in the lobby in May.

Caregiver Wellness* Fridays, May 27; June 24 1 p.m. • Carman

Caregiving is a labor of love, but it can get overwhelming. Wellness coach Gwen McCarroll leads a class designed to relieve stress for caregivers through music, visualization and relaxation techniques.

History & Genealogy

Planning with the End in Mind Session 7: You Don’t Want Your Parents’ Stuff, Your Kids Don’t Want Yours* Monday, May 9 • 7 p.m. • Sargent Mr. G will talk about dealing with stuff that gathers over a lifetime, stuff we don’t have room for, stuff our kids won’t want. After all, you really can’t take it with you.

Local History Scavenger Hunt*

Thursday, May 19 • 6 p.m.

Create a team or work on your own using a provided list of clues to identify and locate landmarks around the Village of Liverpool. Be the first to all the locations and return to the library, and you’ll win a prize! Meet in the Carman Community Room for instructions. You must have a phone/camera for photos of the landmarks. If participating as a team, please register each individual and use the team name in the last name field.

Join with other library patrons to give back to the community. Meet at Meals on Wheels, 413 Church St., N. Syracuse, to create meals for Memorial Day.

Book Bike Pop Up at LITP Concert Series Monday, June 6 6 p.m. • Johnson Park

Visit the LPL2Go Book Bike and Cart and chat with a staffer at the Liverpool Is The Place concert series across Second Street from the library. The cart will be stocked with a selection of books that can be checked out. Bring your card or sign up for one!

FolksMarch

FolksMarch is a non-competitive walking program conducted monthly at various locations in Central New York. You can join a group for a 5-K (3.1 mile) walk from the LPL both days. Walk as far into the route as you’d like. Find more info about FolksMarch at FolksMarch.wordpress.com.

Hiking enthusiast Jason Gouger talks about the High Peaks and other mountain trails he has conquered. Gouger will share how he overcame the challenges to reach his goals. Learn about gear, training exercises and safety tips for your own adventure.

Members of the Syracuse Rose Society bring exhibits of their gorgeous roses, and will be available to discuss a variety of rose topics, including planting methods, pruning, fertilizing and other helpful tips.

The Reading Brain: The Science and How to Help Your Child* Monday, May 2 • 6:30 p.m. • Sargent or Carman

Reading League Director of Community Education and Engagement Kelli Johnson will lead this session for parents and caregivers. Learn about the science of the reading brain and tips for reinforcing skills taught with your child. Focuses on pre-K - 2, but applicable to all ages.

Having trouble staying connected? Feeling like a non-techie in a techie world? The LPL2Go Mobile Tech Van is for all of you.

We’ll be bringing WiFi and a whole world of new devices to the community. Look for Cricut, gaming equipment, coding equipment, printers and scanners, and more! Coming to a pop-up location near you!

Children Let’s Create Story Art with Liverpool Art Center*^

Children ages 6-11 can enjoy an evening at Liverpool Art Center’s new Youth Art Studio, 305 Vine St. Suite 7, Liverpool, to create “story art.” Participants will receive an hour of art instruction for all levels of painting and drawing. No skills are required to join.

Teens looking to get involved at the LPL this summer should attend this orientation session, where you will learn about volunteer opportunities and how to sign up for them. This event is for current and future teen volunteers only.

A make-what-you-want crafting night. Various materials will be provided by the library, including perler beads, duct tape and papercraft supplies.

Meet with a volunteer from LiteracyCNY to help you navigate the online world of completing applications and forms for benefits on government websites, polishing your resume, finding community resources and answering computer questions that you may have been hesitant to ask.
