2014/15 EMPLOYABILITY

COMMS International and Post Grad Student Journey research projects launched to understand what support students need, from whom, where and when. MiniSU’s successfully launched, exceeding targets for student engagement (10k+) and demonstrating a high level of customer service from ‘Mystery Shopper’ reports.

YOUR LIVERPOOL Community Rep led campaigns resulted in 150 bins issued to local community in Kensington and bins moved in Marybone to combat litter problems.

MiniSU activities planned to relate to the needs of students at each location.

LiverpoolSU was a key partner in the ‘Moving home for Summer’ campaign – ensuring that students safeguard their property and home before returning home for the Summer break.

Communications Plan in place to maximise effectiveness of communications for demographic and segmented student groups.

1000 private sector student tenants completed Rate Your Landlord Surveys

Data Sharing Working group enables LiverpoolSU to understand student demographics and send student-wide communications

Community Reps and Welcome Reps are trained and able to signpost students to all the city has to offer.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Top 10 Academic Priorities went through LJMU Committee structure, resulting in one university-wide change and one faculty-level change that students told us will improve their experience. Simplified set up and approval for student-led Academic Societies, resulting in increasing numbers of societies supporting courses. Improvements in working practices across Student Voice and Marketing departments is ensuring that students’ feedback gets to the right person without delay, and, as a result, students are driving the direction of Market Research throughout the organisation. 1200 student nominations for Amazing Teacher Awards 2015. LiverpoolSU is now part of the Personal Tutor Review Group, allowing us to help shape and promote LJMU personal tutor best practice, based on student feedback.

Consistent growth in the numbers of students developing employability skills in our Clubs, Societies, Mature and International Student Networks. Let’s Try programme offers free Pull a Pint and First Aid training and skills development sessions. Volunteering opportunities for students is actively monitored to make recommendations for further investment if needed. Research into Post Graduate opportunities underway to identify how we can better support PG students.

SUSTAINABILITY NUS Extra Card sales raised £37k profit, which contributes towards provision of LiverpoolSU services to LJMU students. Successfully bid for and were awarded £10k government funding for a joint campaign with LJMu and University of Liverpool students, encouraging and supporting students in Liverpool to register to vote in the General Election.

PEOPLE All managers actively working towards best practise management competencies, helping to develop core and student staff.

Further research underway into additional funding streams to support student activities, services and projects. Targets for media sales exceeded in year one of new business development model, with new sales targets and plans in place to maximise opportunities for 2016 and beyond.

Decision-making matrix is updated and used by managers to aid their management.

Finance reports regularly sent to the Trustee Board in good time for improved accountability and financial management/planning. Trustee Board legal responsibilities added to an annual calendar for update and approval, and succession plan approved by current members of the Trustee Board.

Staff handbook updated and all policies made available for all staff to access.

Five year budget forecasting developed to improve strategic financial planning.

Managers undertaking the ILM Coaching & Mentoring qualification and offering mentoring/coaching to staff and students.

NUS Quality Mark self-assessment undertaken and development plan created, working towards recognised best practise in all areas.

I’m so pleased to share the updated LiverpoolSU Strategic Plan 2014-2017 with you.

It is, essentially, an action plan to guide us in making positive changes for LJMU students. The Strategic Plan was developed in consultation with LJMU students; it was shaped by students’ input and ideas, and so reflects students’ expectations and needs. As a students’ union, one of our core values is to be student-led, and we live this value by having students at the heart of the decisions we make and the objectives we work towards.
