Welcome

to the

39th Annual ARDEC Bull Sale!

For the past six months, the CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team has been selecting, developing and preparing a great set of yearling bulls and heifers for you. They are offering you the best of the 2014-born calves produced from the registered Angus and Hereford seedstock cow herd based at CSU’s Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center (ARDEC) in Fort Collins, Colo. This includes a high-quality set of Hereford bulls, including four head from our National Western Stock Show pen, as well as our best Angus bulls. We also have a solid set of open commercial yearling heifers to add to your herd.

Dr. Jason Ahola Seedstock Team Advisor jason.ahola@colostate.edu (970) 491-3312 (office)

Jesse French ARDEC Livestock Manager jesse.french@colostate.edu (970) 491-2815 (office)

Please note our new sale-day schedule, in which we are holding the actual “sale” of cattle (identification of high bidders and sale prices) at 11:00 a.m. We have opted to not hold an educational symposium in an effort to provide more opportunity for our students to interact with prospective buyers on the morning of the sale. Again this year we will use our new private treaty sale method with limited bid-off (see below for details). We look forward to seeing you on sale day and discussing how CSU’s program can help yours. Don’t hesitate to contact us. Also, many thanks to the crew at ARDEC for their help with cattle preparation and sale-day needs. In addition to Jesse French, livestock manager, a number of undergraduate and graduate student employees care for the cattle at ARDEC. And, two permanent full-time employees were added last fall to address the growing needs at ARDEC, including David Escobar, feedyard manager, and Brian Brigham, research Manager. Please see page 1 for more information. In August of 2014, the faculty, staff and students of the Animal Sciences Department moved back into a completely remodeled Animal Sciences Building. Thanks to considerable efforts by Dr. Kevin Pond, animal science department head, and generosity from a large number of donors, we now have access to state-of-the-art classrooms, labs and other resources for teaching, research and outreach activities. Further, construction of “Phase II” of this project will include a large expansion of the Animal Sciences building to the south. This will include a retail outlet, Dr. Kevin Pond meats laboratory with harvest facility, cattle handling facility, pavilion Head of Dept. of Animal Sciences and auditorium. If you haven’t seen the new building, please contact kpond@colostate.edu Jason Ahola or Kevin Pond for a personal tour. (970) 491-1442 (office)

How Sale Day Works: Private Treaty Sale Method – Again this year, we will be offering our bulls and heifers for sale via private treaty for a number of reasons. Predominantly, this is to enable our students to have more time to interact with bull customers, give customers more time to make purchasing decisions, and foster an environment that is low-stress on both people and cattle. As we have done every year, on sale day we will be offering the first pick of our bulls – no cattle have been offered in advance or held back. The sale is in the same location, on the same day and at the same time as always. Base Prices with Bid-Off – All cattle will be pre-priced with a “base price” ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 for most bulls. Heifers will be pre-priced with a “base price” within each breed depending if the buyer wants “choice” of the pen or if the buyer wants to purchase the entire pen. A listing of all sale prices is included with this catalog and will be available on sale day. No bulls or heifers will be sold on sale day below these minimum prices. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., outside next to the pens of cattle, buyers and selling prices will be determined for each bull and heifer in the respective sale order. At that time, if only one person indicates their interest in an animal at that animal’s base price (by raising their hand and indicating so), then that person will be identified as the buyer by the sale coordinator. If more than one person is interested in an animal, a slow-speed bid-off will be conducted using $100 to $250 increments by the sale coordinator to determine the high bidder and official selling price. No actual auctioneer or ring men will be present. Sale Order – Cattle will be sold in catalog order beginning with Angus bulls, followed by Hereford bulls and then commercial heifers. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., the sale coordinator will go through the sale order only once using the method described previously. Any bulls not sold on sale day will be available beginning March 29, 2015, on a first-come, first-served basis until all are sold by the end of the bull selling season. No On-line Broadcast – In an effort to reduce costs, this year’s sale won’t be broadcast via the internet or satellite video. If you seek assistance in purchasing a bull, but are unable to attend, please contact Jason Ahola, Jesse French or Kevin Pond (contact info above).

ARDEC Welcomes Two New Employees

Brian Brigham Research Manager

Two new full-time positions were added to the ARDEC staff in 2014. David Escobar was hired as the feedyard manager; he oversees the daily feeding, care and management of up to 1,000 head of cattle in the feedlot and associated pens. Escobar is a 2014 graduate of the Department of Animal Sciences at CSU. In addition, Brian Brigham was hired as the research manager, where he oversees the CSU Feed Intake Unit – a facility equipped with GrowSafe technology that enables individual daily feed intake data to be collected on cattle housed in group pens. Brigham also coordinates all research activities at ARDEC and serves as the liaison with Animal Sciences faculty conducting research at ARDEC. He is also a graduate of CSU’s Department of Animal Sciences (B.S. in 2003, M.S. in 2011).

David Escobar Feedyard Manager

Importance of Measuring Feed Efficiency Given the current environment of elevated input prices, volatile weather conditions and environmental concerns, efficiency of beef production is a critical part of university research and selection criteria in the seedstock industry. The CSU Feed Intake Unit (FIU) at ARDEC offers both a facility for research as well as a test station for beef seedstock producers to collect feed efficiency data in order to make more informed selection decisions and produce cattle with increased profit potential in the feedlot. The FIU is comprised of six pens with a total capacity of 200 animals. Individual animal feed intake is measured using a GrowSafe System, which was developed in 2000 as the first fully-automated cattle feed monitoring system for cattle fed in a group pen. There are 24 GrowSafe feeders in the FIU, grouped four per pen. Each feeder is connected to a scale that continually records the amount of feed present. And, each animal has an electronic identification (EID) tag which GrowSafe uses to link the amount of feed consumed to each animal each day. Cattle are also weighed throughout the test period to track weight gains. A typical test consists of a warm-up period of around 10 to 20 days when animals are acclimated to the feeders and transitioned to a test ration. Actual individual intake data is then collected for 50 to 70 days to allow an animal’s daily intake to be accurately characterized. At the end of the test, daily intakes and periodic weights are summarized for clients of the FIU and used to generate a residual feed intake (RFI) value to rank animals based on feed efficiency. An RFI value is the difference between the expected intake of an animal and what they actually consumed. Animals with a negative RFI value are more feed efficient than those with a positive value. RFI is a moderately heritable trait, allowing improvement to be made through genetic selection. For more information about the CSU FIU, please contact Brian Brigham or Jesse French at (970) 491-2815.

CSU Commercial Heifers Selling For the first time in several years, we are offering 20 commercial yearling open heifers via private treaty on sale day. These heifers are ready to breed this spring, and will be a great addition to any commercial cow herd. Heifers will be offered in 3 “pens”: Angus pen (10 head), Hereford pen (7 head) and Black Baldy pen (3 head). A listing of base prices for these heifers, by pen, is included with this catalog and will be available on sale day. Prices will either be for “choice” – where a buyer wants to select one or a few specific heifer(s) – from within a pen, or for the entire pen of heifers. Heifers are selling unregistered. Lot

Seedstock Merchandising Team Greetings from the team, This year has gone by so fast, it’s hard to believe that our time is almost over being a part of the Colorado State University Seedstock Team. We started our time on the team with first halter breaking and showing our pen of Hereford bulls and heifers at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. Then, we turned around and were privileged to be a part of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Mid-Winter Conference. After that, we took a road trip to Sizzling San Antonio, Texas, for the Cattle Industry Annual 2014-2015 CSU Seedstock Team Convention & Trade Show. Prior to returning home from San Antonio, we have been hard at work preparing for our annual bull sale by clipping and picturing all of our cattle, getting all the data in order and arranging the catalog. The team would like to send out a great big thanks to our families, faculty, sponsors, past members and, of course, our buyers for all the support that you have shown us throughout the year. Without all of you, this wonderful opportunity would not be possible for us. From all of us on the team, enjoy our sale and cattle!

Becca MacQueen

Thank you for your support, The 2014-2015 CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team

Becca MacQueen – Becca is a senior majoring in animal science and is expecting to graduate in May 2015. Becca is a Colorado native who grew up in Broomfield. Her love of animals pushed her to become a certified veterinary technician, but her main passion is large animals. Her goals are to become a ranch manager, and to one day own and operate her own cow-calf operation. Being on the Seedstock Team has allowed Becca to make connections that will help her in her future goals and provide long-term friendships.

Gina Phillips – Gina is a junior majoring in agricultural business. She grew up in the

small town of Conifer, Colo., where she was an active member in 4-H from age 8, showing horses, sheep and cattle. It is Gina’s passion for cattle that sparked her desire to join the Seedstock Team. Her future goals include working in sales and marketing in the agricultural industry. While on the team, Gina has networked with industry leaders and increased her knowledge of cattle.

science, and will be graduating in May 2015. He is from Danville, Calif., where he developed a passion for the beef industry through 4-H and while being heavily involved with Seever & Sons Cattle of Pleasanton. Upon graduation, Austin has accepted a full time position with Cargill Beef in Fort Morgan, Colo. As part of the Seedstock Team, Austin enjoyed expanding his network in the industry, learning new and innovative industry practices at the Cattle Industry Annual Convention, and being a part of the National Western Stock Show. See pictures and videos of all lots at www.csubulls.colostate.edu

Brady Rink – Brady grew up on his family’s commercial cattle ranch in southeast Colorado.

He showed and judged cattle through 4-H and FFA, while being a part of the Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association. Brady served on the 2013-2014 Colorado State FFA officer team and after retiring transferred to CSU where he is currently a junior majoring in animal science and agricultural education. While on the team, he advocated for CSU and agriculture at the National Western Stock Show and other events.

Janna Smith – Janna is a senior double majoring in animal science and agricultural literacy. Janna is from Haxtun, Colo., and is working to become a large animal veterinarian. For eight years, Janna showed a variety of animals including horses, goats and cattle. For the last five years, she has focused on showing goats at the National Western Stock Show, and for the last three years at the Colorado State Fair. Being a part of the Seedstock Team, Janna has learned more about the seedstock industry. Janna Smith Events Committee

Jessica Spear – Jessica was born and raised on her family’s Loomis, Wash., ranch. The

Spear Ranch runs a herd of commercial Angus-cross cattle, and puts up hay and corn for feed. Being around the beef industry since birth gave Jessica a love for cattle and the hard work required to be in this business. Jessica is a junior transfer student from Washington State University, and is double majoring in animal science and agricultural business. She is currently employed at CSU’s ARDEC facility. In the future, Jessica wants to return to her family’s business and continue involvement in the beef industry. As a member of the team, she most enjoyed representing CSU at the Cattle Industry Annual Convention.

Hands-On Committee

Ryan Vargas – Ryan is a junior majoring in animal science. Ryan is from Rye, Colo. He developed his interest in the beef industry from working on local commercial cow-calf ranches and stocker operations. His knowledge increased from opportunities he gained through CSU, and he currently rides pens for Cervi Cattle Company in Greeley, Colo. After finishing his education, Ryan hopes to continue his work in the industry as a commercial producer. In addition to networking opportunities, Ryan enjoyed representing CSU at the National Western Stock Show as part of the Seedstock Team.

Department of Animal Sciences Preparing for your future in the livestock industry

Animal Sciences Mission Statement:

A source from which visionaries and the most innovative approaches in animal husbandry technologies originate. CSU Livestock Judging Team

2014 CSU Livestock Judging Team

Colorado State University’s Livestock Judging program dates back to 1914 when the first team competed at the National Western Stock Show. Students have the opportunity to represent CSU at the most prestigious contests in the nation and travel to nationally recognized livestock shows. More importantly, team members have gone on to serve as leaders in the livestock industry. Many alumni attribute their successes after graduating from CSU to values gained through participation on a judging team. Contact: Shane Bedwell • 970-491-8093 • shane.bedwell@colostate.edu

CSU Meat Judging Team The Meat Judging Program at CSU is well known worldwide in the meat science discipline, as well as for winning national championships in meat judging and other intercollegiate meat judging competitions. Meat judging involves the critical evaluation of carcasses and various other products from market beef, swine and lambs in order to determine their value and to rank them accordingly. Contact: Dr. Dale Woerner • 970-491-7615 • dale.woerner@colostate.edu 2015 CSU Meat Judging Team

CSU Collegiate Stockgrower’s Club The CSU Collegiate Stockgrowers is an organization of young men and women who share an interest in promoting and learning about the livestock industry. This club was formed in 2014 as the result of merging the CSU Collegiate Cattlewomen and CSU Collegiate Cattlemen organizations. Collegiate Stockgrowers members work with the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), Colorado Cattlewomen’s Association (CCW) and Colorado Livestock Association (CLA) to promote agriculture, and encourage the personal and professional development of members in order to form the next generation of leaders in the livestock industry. This includes educating the public about the beef industry, including partnering with the Colorado Beef Council during the National Western Stock Show in January to interact with the public about the nutritional value of beef. Club members also participate in Ag Adventure at the CSU ARDEC facility each fall, where hundreds of local third graders are educated about agriculture. The Collegiate Stockgrowers also attend the CCA mid-winter meeting in January and the CCA/CLA Annual Convention in June of each year, and send members to the Cattle Industry Annual Convention and Trade Show. Contact: Dr. Kevin Pond • 970-491-1442 • kpond@colostate.edu CSU Collegiate Stockgrowers in 2013

CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team Since 2003, the Seedstock Team has overseen the annual marketing of bulls and heifers produced from the CSU ARDEC Angus and Hereford cowherd in Fort Collins on the fourth Saturday in March. This select group of eight undergraduate students is the result of a formal application and interview process held during the fall. Once selected, team members oversee all preparations for the annual spring production sale, including animal selection, performance data collection, advertising, promotion, and animal preparation. In addition, students show pens of cattle at the National Western Stock Show and represent CSU at events including the Range Cow Beef Symposium, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Mid-winter Meeting, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Annual Convention, and Beef Day at the Colorado Farm Show. This combination of experiences provides students with a real-world, hands-on learning environment and an opportunity to network within the beef cattle industry. 2014-2015 Seedstock Merchandising Team Contact: Dr. Jason Ahola • 970-491-3312 • jason.ahola@colostate.edu

Scholarship Program & Endowment Fund For more than a decade, CSU has been home to the prestigious Seedstock Merchandising Team – the only one of its kind in the U.S. Through a real-world, hands-on and experiential learning process, team members develop an immense skillset and knowledge base. Since its inception, the Seedstock Team has had tremendous impact on over 100 students, many of whom are now leaders in the beef industry. To sustain the program, and support students, private support is being sought to create a program endowment, which is a pool of invested funds which will provide annual earnings in support of the Seedstock Team. The team is seeking industry partners to officially “sponsor” each of the eight team members annually by making a three-year commitment of $3,500 per year, for a total charitable gift of $10,500. A portion of each gift will provide a scholarship directly to a student, and remaining funds will support additional student experiences and contribute to development of the endowment. Two companies have helped to initiate this effort – High Plains Cattle Supply (Platteville, Colo.) and Leachman Cattle of Colorado (Wellington, Colo.). Through a three-year commitment, they will be matched with a team member each year. Information about this new program is available by contacting Dr. Jason Ahola, Seedstock Team advisor, at (970) 491-3312 or jason.ahola@colostate.edu. Additional levels of support are also available, including direct contributions to the endowment fund and the possibility of a naming level gift for the team.
