In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Angus Show at the Kansas State Fair the American Angus Association has designated the 2013 open Angus Show a Roll of Victory point show. KAA members, Angus breeders, show enthusiasts and juniors are encouraged to participate in the Kansas State Fair Open Angus Show on Saturday, September 14 in Hutchinson. Brad Gohr, Madras, Oregon will evaluate the show. The Angus bull and female champions will be eligible to represent the Angus breed in the Supreme Drive competing for cash and prizes. Kansas Angus Association The President’ s Pen

I trust all is going well. The sale season is over, calving is done or slowing down and attention is turned to breeding heifers and cows and getting them turned out on summer grass. The Angus business continues to be excellent, as demand for breeding stock and Angus beef keeps improving. My youngest son Mitch has been in Washington DC this semester as in intern for Sen. Moran. He tells me that CAB® is very well represented and accepted there, Although it costs a little more people are willing pay extra for the added quality and consistency. This should make us all proud of our end product. Our breeding decisions and management techniques are huge contributors to this success. Let’s all remember to support our youth as they prepare for the Preview Show and the NJAS this summer. With the National Jr. Show in Kansas City ,I hope many of us can attend to help and support our kids. There is much more to the event than the cattle show. Try to attend and watch our Kansas kids excel in speech, sales, cook-off and all of the other contests. Hopefully the drought has eased in your area but please continue to pray for relief for those still affected.

Notes & News from Anne Sweet Summertime

Countless songs, poems and sayings can be found about summertime but I think the ones that stick with us most remind us of childhood, family and youth. My fondest summer memories are family “vacations” to the National Junior Angus Show. My tradition of attending the NJAS started in 1974 when my parents took my siblings and I along with group of other juniors from my home state of Louisiana to the National Junior Angus Heifer Show in Dallas, Texas. That tradition continued throughout my junior Angus membership , was passed onto my own children and continues today. Many families have the same tradition of attending NJAS . We all share great memories, but more importantly those that have embraced NJAS and all of its activities, contests and opportunities have been blessed with invaluable learning experiences , family time and friendships. I truly believe that attending and participating in state junior Angus events and the NJAS is a must for every “Angus family”, whether you make it a yearly event or take part when the location is right for your family. What better year to start your own tradition than 2013! Our annual Ks summer Preview Show is in Hutchinson and NJAS is in Kansas City. While the showring is a huge part of both of these events, each offers much more. Many juniors elect to only take part in the in educational contest each offers. I encourage you to read the “special junior section” of this issue to learn about Kansas junior activities and to visit www. njaa.info or www.njas.info for more information on the National Jr .Angus Show and junior program. Angus industry– Profitability Starts with Genetics

The American Angus Association describes updates to its age-and-source verification program. At one point or another, many cattlemen wonder: Do all black-hided calves bring the same price on sale day? How much emphasis do buyers put on the genetic value of those calves? For about 14 years, Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) Supply Development has been conducting research to answer those questions. The study, titled “Here’s the Premium,” analyzed data from 10 markets that sold more than 300,000 calves in 13,794 lots. What they discovered is positive news for those who rely on Angus genetics. Data from nine cooperating auction markets last fall showed an all-time high Angus premium. It was $5.30 per hundredweight (cwt.) for the combination of 504-pound (lb.) heifers and 511-lb. steers sold in 660 lots, compared to non-Angus contemporaries. In addition, data from 13 years of marketing 4.9 million cattle in 40,799 lots on the leading U.S. video auction shows a clear dominance of Angus genetics. Most of the calves sold on the video include data on breed type, which consistently affects sale price. The study has also found that the premiums for Angus calves have grown in a near linear trend for the past 13 years. So the answer is yes, known Angus steers and heifers bring more on sale day. But to tap into that added value, producers need to provide potential buyers with an idea of how the cattle will perform — and to verify that those black hides are, in fact, Angus-sired. Verifying Angus genetics The American Angus Association® recognized the upward trend early and anticipated the need for an identification program that could differentiate simply black-hided calves from known Angus-sired calves. The solution – AngusSource®. In 2003, the program began as a way to help commercial producers market their feeder calves and replacement heifers. In 2005, AngusSource transitioned to a USDA process verified program (PVP) documenting source, group age and a minimum 50% Angus genetics. When calves enter the sale arena, program ear tags let buyers recognize the added value associated with each animal. “This program has grown significantly over the past 10 years,” says Ginette Kurtz, AngusSource quality manager. “Our goal, every day, is to help producers better market their cattle and increase the profitability of their operation. We believe AngusSource does that extremely well.” However, today’s beef industry is much different than it was a decade ago. Historically low cow herd numbers, coupled with widespread drought, have many cattlemen looking toward management strategies that increase the value of the calves they do retain. On top of that, consumers are demanding more information — like documented source — on the beef products they purchase. A new plan for AngusSource will assist with both. Introducing AngusSource® Genetic The American Angus Association is developing plans to better serve its members and their customers through an updated age-and-source verification program called AngusSource Genetic. It will continue to document Angus genetics, source and age, while also incorporating valuable information from the Association database. It will also improve user experience and reduce implementation hurdles on the ranch. “Today’s cattle producers have a number of options when it comes to managing their herds,” Kurtz says. “By launching AngusSource Genetic we hope to streamline the process and make our program the easiest – and most reliable – genetic verification resource in the beef industry.” The Angus breed boasts the nation’s largest beef cattle registry, and the new AngusSource Genetic program is designed to more closely align with those records, which are updated weekly. Commercial cattlemen using the program will be encouraged to take advantage of the Association’s suite of performance tools and records. “Simplicity is key to all of our updates,” Kurtz says. “Enrolling in AngusSource Genetic will be a straightforward process, with the option to enroll even before calves are born.” Once enrolled, AngusSource Genetic cattle are designated in two ways. The first is an official marketing document that authenticates the genetic integrity and potential worth of the enrolled group of calves. The document will be available online and emailed to a targeted group of buyers who have expressed interest in verified Angus cattle. The second way is a bright, neon-green ear tag. After supplying bull turnout dates, AngusSource Genetic can process enrollment and send program-compliant ear tags so they are ready when calving season begins. The Destron Fearing tamper-evident tag is available in three options: visual, e.Tag and ChoiceSet. These fade-resistant, laser-engraved tags have superior readability and retention. “We feel confident that as the market changes, the value of record keeping is only going to increase,” Kurtz says. “When you see

an AngusSource Genetic ear tag, it means that calf has been raised on an operation focused on quality, rooted in data evaluation and determined to move the industry forward.” Interested producers are encouraged to contact the Association’s AngusSource department to learn more about the program or visit www.angus.org for more information as it becomes available.

American Angus Association Relocates 2014 Annual Meeting

Plans move forward to host the annual event in Kansas City, Mo. The American Angus Association® is pleased to announce that its 2014 Annual Meeting will be a stand-alone event in Kansas City. The number of cattlemen who rely on Angus genetics continues to grow, year after year. And with that, so does interest in Association programs and services. “We believe hosting the 2014 Annual Meeting in Kansas City will give us a chance to reach out to new areas of our membership and provide them with the education they need to be profitable in the cattle business,” says Bryce Schumann, Association chief executive officer. The Association Board of Directors voted during its February 2013 meeting to begin planning for the Angus event in Kansas City. Tentative dates are set for Nov. 4, 2014, to Nov. 6, 2014, at the KCI Exposition Center – just 30 minutes from the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. “Our main focus is to offer educational, business and social opportunities to our members and other users of Angus genetics,” Schumann says. “We are developing an event that will truly stand out in the industry and serve all attendees well.” Preliminary event planning includes educational seminars and workshops, keynote speakers, and sessions to conduct Association business. Also being discussed is an extensive trade show featuring allied industry partners. The Angus breed has held its Annual Meeting of Delegates in Louisville, Ky., since 1975. While the event has benefited by being held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), the Association deems a change is appropriate for 2014. Angus will continue many current traditions, such as the awards banquet and receptions. “By conducting the Annual Meeting in a more central location, we hope more Angus breeders will be able to make the trip and celebrate the business breed with us,” says Shelia Stannard, Association director of activities and events. Angus events remain unchanged for 2013 and are scheduled for Nov. 16 – 19, along with NAILE livestock competitions. More information regarding the 2014 Angus Annual Meeting will be posted on www.angus.org as it is available. The American Angus Auxiliary also plans to move its annual meeting in conjunction with American Angus Association’s annual meeting in 2014.

KS Junior Angus Association Annual KJAA Preview Show May 31-June 1

The Kansas Junior Angus Association will host its annual Preview Show May 31-June 1 on the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The show will feature divisions for owned heifers, cow/calf pairs, steers and for bred and owned bulls and heifers. All exhibitors will be eligible to compete in an age appropriate showmanship class . A special showmanship contest will be held to select two juniors that will represent the KJAA in the National Jr. Angus Showmanship Contest in Kansas City later in the summer. The two day event is much more than a cattle show. Juniors have the opportunity to compete in several educational contests even if they are not exhibiting cattle. A herdsman quiz contest is open to all members. Quiz questions and the length of the quiz will vary depending on the age of the contestant and will test juniors on their knowledge of the Angus and beef industries. Not only is school out but summer vacations, road trips and plans are in full swing. Like many Angus families, our ‘vacation’ was always to attend the National Junior Angus Show. Due to the amount of contests and activities that go on throughout the week, one might consider it a ‘working’ vacation! The best part though is that you get to work on teams with your friends, learning knew facts and meeting new people. Kansas has a unparalleled reputation within the NJAA for being some of the hardest working juniors around. As I was pondering what to write for the ‘Junior Issue’ of the KAN, I thought it was only fitting to reflect on all that we, as a team, have accomplished thus far: 12 members of the National Junior Angus Board of Directors; 4 Outstanding Leadership Awards received; 20 times for the Crystal Award to be claimed by a Kansan; and 7 girls to be crowned Miss American Angus. Not to mention the countless champions we have exhibited in the show ring, the showmanship finalists and the Sweepstakes we claimed together through the years. Pay close attention to t all the important entry deadlines for awards, contests and cattle. Minutes: The January meeting of the Kansas Junior Angus Association was called to by President Hannah McCabe. A roll call sheet was passed around for members to sign, as first time members came forward to be introduced and say where they lived. There was a total of nine new members. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as read. Megan Green made the motion seconded by Claire Wingert. Motion passed. The treasurer reported that we had a balance of $3,382 in CDs and our checking account. Anne Lampe talked about having the new members checking out our Facebook page, and signing up for the Kansas Angus News. She also state that cook off cook off teams need to be formed by May 10 , so that we can get out entries in by the deadline, contact Anne if you want to be on a team. The deadlines for NJAS are May 15th for cattle and many contests. JMB Angus gave a presentation on their cattle company to us, and also informed us that for a fundraiser they would donate the pick of their 2013 heifer crop. Tickets will cost $10each or$50 for 6. The drawing for the heifer will take place at the 2013 Kansas State Fair during the open show. The motion made by Chelsey Figge to proceed with the fundraiser and seconded by Shelby Hall. Motion passed. Jerry Theis talked about setting up a block set of hotel rooms for Junior Nationals. He said if anyone has any ideas on where to stay they should contact him or his wife. Megan Blythe talked about Junior Nationals, and reminded us to sign up for contests like cook off, team sales, and speeches. She also wanted juniors to sign up for Raising the Bar at Kansas State University in April. There was no old business. Under new business we had to vote for Kansas’s voting delegates. Mackenzie Flory and Evan Woodbury were elected as delegates. Cody Theis was nominative to be a candidate fro the NJAA board of directors. Evan Woodbury moved to accept Cody and Bryce Maneth seconded. Motion passed. Next under new business we talked about getting new shirts for Nationals, a decision will be made in June. Ethan Dickerson moved to adjourn the meeting Claire seconded. 2013 Kansas Junior Angus Preview Show▪ May 31- June 1 KS State Fairgrounds Rules & Entry Form

Form also available on line at www.kansasangus.org 1. Tie facilities will be available for use by exhibitors on Thursday, May 30 after 1:00 p.m. 2. Cattle must be checked in by Friday, May 31, 2013 at 10 a.m. 3. The KJAA Preview show will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. There will be a $15.00 entry fee for each animal entered; due by May 24 , 2013 ( postmarked on/before). Submit on-line at www.kansasangus.org . NO LATE ENTRIES will be accepted. Ribbons for each class will be provided as well as champion and reserve champion ribbons for divisions and overall awards. After check-in cattle must remain on KSF until release, cattle are released after completion of their respective classes. 4. All registration papers must be properly transferred according to the rules of the American Angus Association and solely in the name of the junior exhibitor. You must have your ORIGINAL registration papers with you at the show. 5. Tattoos and original registration papers will be checked at the show. Any animal that is not tattooed or has an incorrect tattoo will not be allowed to show. Freeze brands allowed as per AAA rules. 6.Health papers are not required, but cattle must not have warts, ringworm or show signs of sickness or disease. Females (of age) are to be OCV. 7. Females must be born on/after September 1, 2011 to be eligible to show. 8. Bred-and-owned heifers may also show in the owned division provided they pay for the entry fee & enter in both shows. 9. STEERS-Classes for registered Angus steers, commercial purebred Angus steers and Angus-based predominantly black crossbred (Angus sire or dam) steers, born on/after January 1, 2012 . Registered Steers must comply with NJAA rules. Commercial Angus and Angus Cross steers must comply with Kansas 4-H and FFA rules. Reg. steers show by age. 10. BULL show for registered bred-and-owned Angus bulls born January 1, 2012- December 31, 2012 11.COW/CALF pairs may be exhibited provided the calf is bred-and-owned by the exhibitor and the junior is the sole recorded owner of the cow. If entries are sufficient a bred & owned class may be made. A.) If the cow was not bred by the exhibitor, the issue date on the recorded transfer of the cow must precede the breeding date of the cow for the calf at side. B.) Calf must be the cow’s most recent natural calf and must have been born on or after September 1, 2012 C.) Calf must be registered by show date and shown on halter.



12. Contestants must show their own animals unless 2 or more are exhibited in the same class in such case another KJAA member is allowed to show.. In the case of illness or injury a KJAA member may be allowed to show in your place with a written doctor’s excuse. Notice must be received at check in. In the case of an emergency illness or injury at the show after cattle check-in , the show chairman (KJAA president) must be notified prior to the class in order for a substitute showman. Failure to show a doctor’s excuse or in the case of a show emergency contact with show chairman prior to entering the class will result in disqualification of the entry. 13. Classes will be set up according to age and number entered. Steers refer to #9 14. Exhibitors must be members of the KJAA. If not a member, you can join when entering. 15.Cattle will be bedded on provided chips. Bring your own feed and hay as well as straw for tie-out area. No feed or straw sales during show. 16. SHOWMANSHIP- Pee-wee (ages 7-9 must be an exhibitor), Junior (ages 10-13), Intermediate (14-17) and Senior (18-21) showmanship contests will be held. (all ages as of January 1, 2013) . Each contestant must own and exhibit their animal***. You must be an exhibitor to show in showmanship. 17. Members ages (14-21) competing to represent Kansas at the NJAS showmanship contest will compete in a specific showmanship class. You may compete in only 1 showmanship class. ***Older members competing to go to the NJAS may borrow a heifer , however you must notify an advisor or KJAA president (show chairman) before entering & showing. You must have been a KJAA & NJAA member prior to showing.*** Cow/calf pairs are not recommended for showmanship, if an exhibitor has only a pair an exception may be made by speaking to the show chairman or advisor to allow borrowing a heifer for showmanship. The pair will not be permitted in ring, it must be separated either the cow or calf shown individually. SHOWMANSHIP may be entered during show check in– no fee required.

Compete Beyond the Showring During the 2013 NJAS

Cattle show season is right around the corner, and the 2013 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Kansas City, Mo., is sure to be a highlight for many. But before the summer heat wave hits and the school year ends, National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members can begin to compete in the NJAS. In fact, junior members who cannot make the trip to Kansas City this summer can also participate through mail-in entry competitions. “The NJAS is an event that goes far beyond the showring,” says Robin Ruff, junior activities director for the American Angus Association®. “With more than a dozen educational contests, the NJAS is an opportunity for juniors to showcase their skills in several areas, which allows them to grow into the future of the Angus breed.” The photography contest is to help NJAA members increase their communication skills through the creative display of a message or feeling through a camera lens. The winning photos will be placed in the September issue of the Angus Journal. A graphic design contest is held to provide fun while sharing ideas that may be useful in promotion of the Angus breed. Members are able to use computer technology to design materials. The purpose of the writing contest is to encourage the enhancement of written communication skills and to allow junior Angus members another chance to compete prior to the NJAS. Entries should be informative, and if appropriate, entertaining. If space permits, winning entries will be published in the Angus Journal. Topics for each division can be found at www.njaa.info The video contest encourages the enhancement of visual communication skills and to allow junior Angus members another chance to compete prior to the NJAS. The contest is designed to reward those for their creativity and originality. This year’s topic is to produce a commercial that promotes the NJAA. Angus Juniors ‘Raise the Bar’ at Kansas State University

When it comes to leadership development, it’s more than just showing up. It’s about gaining industry knowledge, strengthening communication skills and learning the value of teamwork. That is exactly what Angus youth learned while attending the 2013 Raising the Bar conference at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members met April 11- 14 to participate in the premier leadership-training event. “The Raising the Bar conferences give our junior members the opportunity to expand their horizons and truly ‘raise the bar’ on what they can accomplish,” says Robin Ruff, American Angus Association® director of junior activities. Kansas Angus Auxiliary With the hopes of warmer temperatures, green grass and summer vacations, we are also looking towards the National Junior Show in Kansas City and another opportunity given to us to support our juniors. During the Cook-off competition the Auxiliary works behind the scene with monetary support for each team and at the competition itself. Auxiliary members, I encourage you to come and help where and when you can. The Cook off always proves to be an educational and entertaining event for everyone involved.

Minutes: The Kansas Angus Auxiliary held their January meeting, Saturday, January 26, 2013 at

11:00 am on the Kansas State Fairground in conjunction with the Kansas Angus Futurity. The meeting was called to order by President, Varee McCabe with twenty –three ladies present. Short introductions followed the meeting being called to order. Officers Reports were given. Megin O’Brien read the secretary’s report for the June 2012 minutes. Reading of these minutes were motioned for approval by Anne Lampe, seconded; approved. Lori Fink presented the treasurer’s report with Varee McCabe moving to accept the report as presented. Sandy Lungdren seconded; approved. Megin O’Brien presented the reporter’s report by presenting the Auxiliary with the final scrapbook for the 2010-2012 term. Committee Reports were given by Anne Lampe, Lori Fink, Mary McCurry, Lynne Hinrichsen and The scholarship committee has reviewed the state scholarships Wendy Flory. Anne presented this year’s Miss Kansas Angus and Ambassador Contestants, judges that were turned in by the Kansas Juniors. We appreciate the and sponsors. This year’s judges were Mary McCurry, former Miss American Angus, Garrett Lampe, committee’s time and dedication in readying the applications for for KJAA member and Gretchen Frost, former Miss Illinois Angus Queen. Candidates vying for the the National Auxiliary Scholarship Review Committee. The Miss Kansas Angus title introduced themselves before those present. Megan Green, a sophomore at scholarship winners will be announced at the Kansas Preview in Pleasant Ridge High School of Leavenworth, KS and Johanna Lundgren, a senior, Ottowa, KS. June. Good Luck! Outgoing Miss Kansas Angus, Chelsea Figge presented a short report and scrapbook of her 2012 reign including local sales and shows attended. Mary McCurry presented the Ways and Means report The next Auxiliary meeting will be held at the Kansas Preview asking for ideas on this year’s fundraising items. Additionally, she presented three baskets that were Show in June. Hope to see you all there. being placed in the Scholarship auction that evening filled with remaining platters on a picnic theme. Mary stated that there were only 50 plates remaining and she recommended that the Auxiliary look into a $20 Fire Sale in order to clear the way for new inventory. Lynne Hinrichsen presented a short updated on the Kenneth and Lorene Moore Scholarship. This year there were two applicants. Applicants must be a college sophomore majoring in an Ag related field. The winner will be introduced at the Banquet that night. Furthermore she continued on to state that applications for Nationals must be first won at the State level and that those May 24– Application deadline for the Ks Angus scholarship deadlines had been moved to April 1. Scholarship forms are available online and there must be 6 hard copies presented. The final committee report came from Wendy Flory as she updated Auxiliary sponsored Premier Exhibitor and present on the changes to the Achievement Award. The Achievement Award is available on the Junior Challenge Awards– see pages 10 & 11 for those American website and the cutoff date for events accepted must fall within the September 30 – applications. The remaining bracelets that were given as a gift to those attending the breakfast are being placed in the Scholarship Auction following the Banquet. Kansas has a very special honor as the 2013 Miss American Angus is Esther McCabe, Elk City, KS. Anne Lampe presented a description of the duties and expectations of this role. The Miss Ks Angus Program Chairman– floor was opened for ideas on how the Kansas Auxiliary may help support Esther during her tenure. Anne Lampe Elizabeth Jansen motioned that the association provide Esther with $1000 that she may use to assist Ways & Means Chairman– her with her travels. The motion was seconded by Sharee Sankey; approved. Mary McCurry President, Karen Santee concluded the meeting by encouraging all members to become active with Achievement Awards Chairmanthe youth and support them all during the Auction following the Banquet that evening.
