WELCOME! We would like to welcome you to the annual Axtell Cattle Company Bull and Female sale. We feel that the offering is deep in quality for both calving ease and performance bulls. The heifers are also very good this year. We were blessed with good rains and grass last fall so we left the calves on the cows longer to utilize our summer pastures. We start the bulls slow and gradually build up their ration. The bulls are looking real good and they are hitting their stride! Be sure to check out videos of all the sale bulls and heifers online at DVAuction.com. Keep in mind that they will have matured another month and will be nearly 100 pounds bigger at sale time. We invite you to stop by anytime to see the bulls and heifers, our herd sires or our cowherd. Just call to set up a time and get directions. The sale offering will also be available for viewing at the sale location on the afternoon of March 24th. We look forward to seeing you sale day but if you are unable to attend and wish to bid just contact us, the sale representatives or preregister at DVAuction.com a couple of days ahead of the sale. You are able to bid live on DVAuction or leave proxy bids on lots you may be interested in. I have used proxy bids before and it works well—you just input a maximum bid you’d be willing to pay and the computer will bid for you up to that amount. Please let us know if we can be of any assistance to you in the buying process. We love to talk about cattle and would be glad to visit with you anytime. Also be sure to follow our facebook page and website for more sale details. Hope to see you March 25th. -The Axtell Family Brian, Jamie Jo and Clay

Legend was the high selling bull at the 2013 Choat/Arrowsmith Sale in Nebraska. He is moderate, deep bodied and an easy calving bull. We’ve been impressed with his calves. He is completely unrelated to anything we’ve used in the past.

Lot 2 is a maternal brother to reference sire Axtell Epic 1011 and a bull we bought from Beckton, Beckton Julian W354. We think a lot of his dam and have infused her into our herd more through her sons. This bull had an actual weaning weight of 762 out of a ten year old cow. He will add middle, good dispositions and make outstanding daughters. He can be used on heifers and is plenty good enough to use on all the cows as well.

Lot 3 is a calving ease deluxe bull with a great hip, moderate frame, good length and deep body. He is the kind that we strive to produce. He is backed by a first calf heifer that bred back early and will calve in less than 365 days while raising a top calf. Calving ease is evident all through his pedigree and he is out of our Syringa line of cows that are top notch. Lot 5 is backed by our top cow, 616. She is built like a tank, raises top calves and has a flawless udder and feet. I cannot find a fault in her. She was also the Grand Dam of the top selling bull last spring. Lot 5 adds our Cody bull and has good calving ease and performance. Lot 5 is stretchy, has a little more frame and has been a standout since birth. Use him with confidence on heifers or cows. Both the sire and dam are as easy going as you can make them.

Lot 7 is a thick made calving ease bull that really took off this winter. The Legend x Forster Gold cattle seem to click. This bull is thick and soggy and will be a great bull to start on heifers and graduate him to the cows. His dam is a top producer for us and goes back to our Syringa line.

Here is a ¾ brother to the Lot 7 bull. We really like the Legend x Forster Gold combination. This bull is long, with a good top and good muscle. He will give you a little more frame than some of our cattle. His dam is an outstanding cow for us. She never misses and does it while looking good. This bull would work on larger heifers or cows. Keep the daughters and cash in on the big steer calves from him.
Here is a bull that is probably the thickest made bull in the pen. He’s got a great top and is loaded with muscle. He’s got extra bone and weight on a moderate frame. He is not a heifer bull, but he will give you some really good, thick calves with extra performance.

Heifer bull with some good growth. His dam is a nice uddered, moderate cow. The grand dam is still in production at age 13. This sale is the last chance to own a Beckton Cody T008 son. They are good growth cattle with great dispositions. A full sister to this bull has a great udder.
Here’s a high performing heifer bull that was good from day one. His dam has hit a home run on the last two calves. Last year’s bull was the second high selling bull going to Karl and Ginger Wright. This bull is very similar in appearance. He has a great disposition and will leave good females. The grand dam produced our top selling bull in 2012.

This high performing bull is deep bodied, long and thick. He is a lighter colored bull that will produce big, growth calves. His dam’s udder has a weaker suspension than our typical cow, but it is still a functional udder that will never cause an issue. With that said, this bull will not be an udder improver, just a weaning weight improver.

Same sire as Lot 42 and this bull’s dam is the grand dam of Lot 42. Very closely related and this bulls dam is a great, moderate cow. She probably has the best udder in the herd – bar none. We wouldn’t keep a couple commercial bulls out of ordinary cows. He will make great cows and get you a little hybrid vigor as well.

4841 is a bull with more frame than a 4.5, he will add length and should be a productive bull. His dam is a top cow for us and he goes back to the famous Copperlass cow family. I do not recommend this bull for heifers due to some variability in BW’s from his sire. He will make a great cow bull and should cause no problems on cows.

Lot 56 is a bull to increase growth, thickness and udder quality. I really like this bull, he does a lot of things right. His dam has a perfect udder as do the daughters of Black Cedar 480. Here’s a bull to get back to the basics of Black Angus.
4293 will be a very easy calving heifer bull with some length to him. He is narrow through the head and shoulders and is off the charts for calving ease with a 16 CED and -1.8 BW EPD.

Lot 58 is a Sinclair x Cole Creek bull that will make excellent, low input cows. He is a calving ease bull with more bone than most and a good top. His dam is a good, young easy keeping cow. The dam is one of those hard working cows that isn’t flashy, but does her job quietly and breeds back on time and raises a good one every year.

Lot 63 is out of a cow we bought in the Sinclair Pennsylvania dispersal sale. This bull blends old N Bar pedigrees with some Rito genetics from the cow side. I think this bull will make good cows.
Red Angus Heifers We will be bringing the heifers into the ring in groups of three. You will have the option of purchasing one heifer or all three– your choice. The heifers in this offering are right out of our replacement heifers. They are not the big, fat heifers like you might see at a show. They are raised on haygrazer hay and a protein tub. This is the way we raise our replacements. They really pop once they are out on summer grass. We feel we can put on a much cheaper gain by doing it this way. We also feel that over fat heifers have less fertility and milk than heifers that are raised in this fashion. These heifers are guaranteed to breed. We tried to catch a cross section of our different sires in this offering as well as different types of heifers. We have some low birth weight, moderate heifers, and we’ve also included some out of the higher end for performance.

This heifer will be a top cow. She was near the top, if not the top replacement heifer. Her dam is a good producer, her sisters are good producers and one is the dam of the Lot 15 bull in this sale. She will grow into an above average sized cow and if you were to feed her up, she could probably hold her own in a show. She has a little more birthweight than what fits our program, so here she is. This light red heifer had a rough start losing her ears, being sick as a young calf, but is tough and is getting better every day. Udder quality should be good, she won’t get too big and should raise a quality calf.
Our Program We purchased our first Registered Red Angus cow in 1993 and started in the Red Angus business in 1997. We started small with purchases from well known herds and over the years we’ve been able to increase our herd through additional purchases at Boot Jack, Milk Creek Reds, Beckton and others. All of the cattle we have bought in the last five years have went back to a base of Boot Jack and Beckton genetics. We have used A.I.; however, our bread and butter has been buying the best bulls we can find and using them in natural service. We are also using more home raised sires in our program. We feel that our herd bulls are as good or better than most A.I. bulls in the industry. Using our home raised bulls is something that has really helped us improve our cow herd. We take a lot of pride in udder quality and mothering ability and knowing the dam of our herd sire is important to us so that we don’t bring in any unwanted traits through the cow side. Our program is focused on convenience traits. We strive for a cow herd that has sound feet, excellent udders and good fleshing ability. We live in short grass country where large pampered cattle will not work. We have found that moderate framed, easy doing cattle are the way to go here. Excessive growth EPD cattle are typically gone very quickly due to our limited feed resources. We breed for the middle and feel that if our EPD’s indicate that we are near the breed average in most traits, then we are doing something right. You will not see many sires used here that are trait leaders at any one trait, yet they will be very competitive at most traits. You will notice a strong Boot Jack influence in our herd. We really like the maternal side of the Boot Jack cattle and feel that the infusion of Beckton genetics have complimented them well. Our Black Angus herd was started in 2003. Through aggressive culling, we now have a very sound, functional Angus herd. We used a Cole Creek Black Cedar son this year. He is from a herd that has many of the same focuses as we do. Cattle that will go out and do what cattle are supposed to do with minimal inputs. Our Angus cattle are outcross genetics to most herds. It seems that most herds use the same bulls, ours are different, so if you need some new genetics, they should fit the bill. The dam’s and most of the sires of these bulls are available to be seen at any time. Calving ease is also a focus of our program. We have had very few calving problems in our herd. For more information on our program, please don’t hesitate to contact us or check out our website at
