Fellow Cattlemen, It’s hard to believe that a year has gone by since I wrote this for our sale a year ago. What an unprecedented year in the cattle business it has been! Never have we seen feeder and live cattle prices soar to these levels and the cowman be in such a profitable position. It is truly safe to say that as long as the weather supports it, expansion of the beef industry is under way. Just as it was with $8 corn, $230 feeder cattle have us searching for the very best genetics and most performance we can find. Being that the beef cattle business is so much more about longevity than grain, the convenience traits such as calving ease, reproductive efficiency, and maternal ability can’t be overlooked simply for performance. As you read through this year’s catalog, you may notice a fairly substantial change in some of the EPDs over previous years. The Shorthorn breed took a monumental step forward and combined their performance system into the MultiBreed Genetic Evaluation. This will allow our numbers to be compared in the same pool and on the same plane as with breeds such as Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh and a growing number of others. We feel that this eliminates much confusion over different EPD systems and how to compare different breeds of cattle. It will also allow for a full EPD profile for our composite genetics. In this new era, our cattle have stacked up extremely well, showing fantastic calving ease, moderate growth, and excellent marbling. All of these EPDs are backed up by many years of actual performance numbers suggesting the same thing. As you look through the bull offering, over 82% are in the breed’s top 15 % for CED and MCE, 76% for BW, and 80% for $BMI. As in the past, the Spring bulls and heifers have not been ultrasounded, but will be by sale day. Cowboy Auction Procedure The bid-off will start at 1:00 PM CST, March 7. Bulls will have a starting bid of $3,000 and heifers will begin at $2,000. At the time of the bid-off, each individual lot will be announced and all who wish to bid on that lot will be asked to raise their bidder number. Each bidder will be “in” until he chooses to step out and withdraw. Each $100 increment will be announced, and the bidders will be given time to consider whether they are “in” or “out,” before the next increment is announced. When only one bidder remains, they will have “won” that lot. If you are unable to attend or for advanced bidding, contact any of the listed phone numbers to set up bidding by proxy.

Dollar Indexes $CEZ – ($ Calving Ease) This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority.

$F – ($ Feedlot) This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F.
