The President’s Pen
Hello Kansas Angus Association members and enthusiasts. It is indeed an honor for me to be your 2015 President! Some of you know me well and some may not know me at all. My husband, Chris and I own and operate Sankeys 6N Ranch at Council Grove with our children Cody & Lindsay Sankey and Dustin, Jeana and Bayler Hurlbut. Although our children live in other states they play a very big role in our operation. All of them run cows on the ranch and are involved in our breeding, promotion and selling decisions. It is indeed a family run business. We have a fall female sale and sell bulls privately in the spring with a few in the fall. We truly enjoy our involvement with juniors in and out of the showring. Our heifers and steers from our fall sale are represented in many states this year with a focus of the National Junior Angus Show in July, this year in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The cattle business couldn’t be any better for all of us right now. The spring bull sales will be firing up here in February and hopefully spring rains will bring on the grass . The Kansas Angus Association has had awesome leadership and is recognized as one of the most active associations in the nation. I look forward to this year and the activities lined up for the KAA, KJAA and Auxiliary. I look forward to seeing you at sales and activities this spring.

Notes & News from Anne
Oh Yes is that Time What Time? Its bull sale time in Kansas. Just a quick flip through the pages of this issue of the KAN you will find advertisements for both auction and private treaty sales in Kansas offering over 2500 head of registered Angus bulls for sale in the coming months; but that’s not all - with forty-one spring production sales currently listed on the KAA calendar (visit www.kansasangus.org) I estimate over 4000 Angus bulls and hundreds of females are available for sale through auction and by private treaty this spring and early summer. Kansas Angus breeders have a long and upstanding reputation for providing farmers and ranchers in our state and the nation with top quality Angus seedstock that is proven to work in both commercial and registered herds. If you are in the market for a new herd bull or top quality replacement females give one of our Kansas Angus Association members a call or plan to attend a few Kansas sales you will be glad you did. With the outstanding market for seedstock in the past months and the first production sale in Kansas just a couple weeks away I am excited to see what is in store for our members. Please contact me by email or phone me if I can assist you at a sale or help you contact a KAA member.

Angus industry –
News and information provided by the American Angus Association ® & Certified Angus Beef , LLC.
Cultivating the Future American Angus Association launches a new initiative to engage future cattle producers. Cattle farming and ranching is a risky business. Whether the operation is inherited or pieced together over time, there is a lot at stake for cattlemen to produce more pounds of quality beef for consumers. Today’s beef producer will require a different skill set than those of previous generations. To meet the needs of future cattle producers, the American Angus Association has launched a new program called Future Angus Stockmen — an effort to impact the next generation through learning opportunities, while building a bond with the Angus breed and its member-driven organization. “Our goal with the Future Angus Stockmen initiative is to give young producers, who want to play a role in beef production, the jumpstart they need to be successful in the business,” says Ginette Kurtz, Association director of commercial programs. “Strong skills in communications, marketing, data analysis and business planning are critical in our industry’s challenge to produce quality beef.” Future Angus Stockmen is aimed toward college-age or recent graduates who want to raise high quality Angus-based commercial cattle. The program will offer educational opportunities that teach participants how to thrive in the cattle industry, social networking to connect them with fellow producers, and leadership development to instill an entrepreneurial spirit and drive to improve their businesses. Participants will learn how to use proven information such as expected progeny differences (EPDs) and dollar-value indexes ($Values), while incorporating DNA technology to make data-driven decisions. In partner-

ship with Zoetis, the American Angus Association will offer those enrolled in the program a special, reduced rate for GeneMax® Advantage™ and GeneMax Focus™ tests. “The connections, confidence and communication skills that can be gained from this program will be priceless to any young enthusiastic producer,” Kurtz says. Additional program benefits include complimentary enrollment in either AngusSource® or AngusSource Genetic — the Association’s marketing program for Angus-sired feeder calves and replacement females. Future Angus Stockmen participants will also learn the importance of recordkeeping as a precursor to any successful operation by using either the Beef Record Service (BRS) or MaternalPlus® at a reduced cost for submitting data. Thanks to generous funds provided by Allflex and Destron Fearing, young people who enroll in the program will also have the chance to apply for scholarships if they are or will be enrolled in a two- or four-year college while majoring in agriculture. Scholarship winners will be announced at the 2015 National Angus Convention & Trade Show, Nov. 3-5, 2015, in Overland Park, Kan. The Future Angus Stockmen program officially launches March 1, and more information will be posted online at www.ANGUS.org as it develops. Upcoming plans include an application-based gathering of young cattle producers hosted in the summer of 2016 at the American Angus Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. The event will be a culmination of learning and leadership experiences to solidify their agriculture commitment.

K a n s a s J u n i o r A n g u s A s s o c i a ti o n Dear KJAA Members, With the National Western and another Kansas Junior Angus Futurity in the books, I hope that the odds were in your favor in the show ring. I wish to show my appreciation to my fellow officers as well as everyone that helped put on the Futurity show in January. The turnout was incredible and just goes to show how prestige our state association is. Our members and entries continue to climb in numbers every year so good job to everyone out there spreading the word about the KJAA and bringing more people into our family. On a side note I wish the best for everyone still pushing through the spring calving season. The weather has been very fortunate for us when compared to previous years and I hope that I hear the same results from all of you. Hopefully faith and Mother Nature will continue to bring us bearable weather for the future. I look forward to seeing you all out and about at upcoming production sales and other Angus events. Kansas Angus Auxiliary Greetings and welcome to a New Year! I am Megin O’Brien and I am honored to be serving as your Auxiliary President. I currently reside in Hutchinson with my husband CW and our two sons, Dominic and Deacon. Having grown up with the association first participating as a junior, I understand and appreciate the immense value that the Auxiliary system provides for our Juniors. Since becoming an elementary teacher in a large, urban district and subsequently converting to a “city-gal”, I have been trying to find a way to stay active in the association that molded me into the person I am today. Naturally, becoming an active member of the Auxiliary seemed to be the likely progression. The women of the Auxiliary gifted me early as I received the opportunity to build lasting relationships as a former Kansas Angus Ambassador and Queen. And in keeping with tradition, they offered me the ability to obtain scholarships on the state and national level to continue my education. With that stated, I would like to extend my congratulations to the young ladies who were recently crowned as our latest Miss Kansas Angus and Kansas Angus Ambassadors. I sincerely hope that your year may be just as memorable and adventurous as those who reigned before you. A huge thank you to those who continue to sponsor awards to this program. Your support is greatly appreciated! To the recipient of the Kenneth and Lorene Moore Scholarship, you are now in the company of some of the finest recipients and we know you will do the association proud as you continue through your endeavors. Finally, I would like to thank all those who participated in the Auxiliary Scholarship Auction. Your purchases allow us to ensure that our Kansas Juniors are able to continue their education. Furthermore, I encourage all Juniors to continue to watch the Kansas Angus News as we keep you updated on all scholarship deadlines as well as the key people you need to keep in contact with. I hope that this year finds you all in great spirits and health and we will see you on the road!

“We did the Southern Carcass Project here before Gardiner Angus Ranch did. We believed we had to have Southern type cattle to survive in the desert of southeast New Mexico. We worked really hard to do everything right. The problem was, when we sold our cattle on a video auction, our calves would bring $10 to $20/cwt less than any Gardiner Angus Ranch sired calves. I took that kinda personal! A friend of mine, that had purchased our calves before, told me if I thought my calves were worth so much, I should just feed ’em myself and see what they’re really worth. So I did. Unfortunately, he was right.
In the Southern Carcass Project, the cows were bred to Predestined and 5050. We used sons of those bulls and got the same results. We made progress and we made it fast. We weren’t trying to prove anything to anyone but ourselves.” —Jimmy & Linda Richardson Richardson Cattle Co. Carlsbad, New Mexico
