Derek Donnelly

Derek Donnelly is a native St. Petersburg artist specializing in large scale murals and portraiture that often celebrates the nature and history of his sunny, home-town paradise. Donnelly has been a full time working artist since 2010 and has worked with a number of different businesses, corporations and organizations throughout the Tampa Bay Area, including AARP, Tampa Bay Rays Baseball, St. Petersburg College, Museum of History, Sirata Beach Resort and Suncoast Credit Union to name a few. He is also founder of Public Art Project, a 501(c)3 organization specializing in beautification projects, arts education and arts advocacy.

In early 2012, Donnelly opened Saint Paint Arts on the legendary 600 Block of downtown St. Petersburg. This small “art shop” served as a collective of sorts, featuring dozens of local artists over it’s two years of operation. The Shop and artists involved had a major role in shaping the mural culture in modern St. Pete by completing some of the first few pieces in the area. In 2014 Derek closed the physical location of Saint Paint to focus on his blooming mural career and the culture surrounding it. He continued to curate shows at local bars, galleries and the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce.

Shortly thereafter, he helped develop Bloom Art Center with fellow artists and friends including James Oleson, Sebastian Coolidge, Zulu Painter and John Taoramina. With the help of countless people, the Bloom Cru started putting on fully immersive and interactive art exhibits that brought a breath of fresh air to the local arts culture. Bloom closed a couple years later, but served as an incredible venue for countless creatives to collaborate and grow.

In 2016, Donnelly opened COVE (Creative Opportunities and Visual Ent.), a unique studio/gallery space constructed of shipping containers in the heart of the “Pinellas Arts Village” located centrally in Pinellas County. The village is home to dozens of creative professionals from sculptors to photographers, such as Vince Pompei, John Gascot, Robert Reidel and Clayton Shwartz. In the Cove space, Donnelly showcases the diverse visual talent from the area and provides opportunities for fellow creatives.

Derek continues to do murals full-time, working seamlessly with other creative professionals, corporations, organizations and local governments towards a bigger and brighter Tampa Bay Area.

See more of Derek’s work on the cover and page 58 of this book. To follow Derek Donnelly on Instagram @saintpaintarts

Gulfport

Gulfport is a vibrant, eclectic town just 5.7 miles from downtown St. Petersburg along the Boca Ciega Bay

• Clam Bayou Nature Park and Estuary’s upland natural vegetation, marsh and mangrove forests, and waters of Boca Ciega Bay provide habitat and food to a variety of species such as clams, wading birds, fiddler crabs, dolphins, and manatees, to name a few.

• Gulfport has been known by several names since its founding. The first settler in what would become Gulfport were James and Rebecca Barnett in 1868 and named the area Barnett’s Bluff. The settlement became known as Bonifacio around 1880. In 1884, Philadelphia financier Hamilton Disston called it Disston City. However, the United States Postal Service would not recognize the name as it conflicted with a town in Hillsborough County, and it kept the name Bonifacio. Once that community folded in 1890, the Post Office allowed Bonifacio to officially be renamed as Disston City. In 1905, the town name was changed to Veteran City to reflect John Chase’s vision for a retirement community of Civil War veterans. On October 12, 1910, the name would change officially to Gulfport when it got incorporated at the Gulf Casino located on the dock of Electric Railroad Company.

Epiphany at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs

Epiphany takes place each year on January 6th. It marks two events in Jesus Christ’s life, according to the Christian Bible. The first event was when the three wise men visited infant Jesus. The second event was when St. John the Baptist baptized Jesus.

After Divine Liturgy service at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, a procession of clergy including the Archbishop, the choir, divers, dove bearer, and parishioners wind their way down to Spring Bayou. As thousands of locals and visitors look on, the Archbishop blesses the waters and reads the gospel. A white dove is released to signify the descent of the Holy Spirit. After the dove is released, the Archbishop throws a specially made cross into the bayou. young men dive into the waters. The diver who retrieves the cross is considered blessed for the entire year.

Your adventure awaits...

Located along the Anclote River where it intersects the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs is a rich mixture of culture, customs, and families. Its waterfront is a working seaport and shopping district with the unmistakable feel of a Grecian fishing village. Its downtown is a showcase of proud historic buildings and homes from the gracious Victorian era. It’s an unlikely blend of histories, and one you’ll find only in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County’s oldest city.

Past Indian history in this beautiful coastal community predates the arrival of the first settlers in the early 1800’s. Soon after, the advent of the railroad and the building of the Anclote Key Lighthouse brought many positive changes to the area. The town’s Victorian influences stem from the late 1800’s to about 1905, when the seaside village became a playground for wealthy Northerners. These seasonal residents built luxurious estates along Spring Bayou. Soon Tarpon Springs gained fame as one of the great health centers and winter resorts of the time.

Rich sponge beds, discovered in the 1880’s, spawned a flourishing new industry. In 1905, young sponge divers were recruited from the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. The sponge industry thrived, as did the Greek community, and the town’s focus changed. Some of the Greek immigrants who came to the area continue their traditional trade of sponge diving. Today Tarpon Springs is a showcase of both cultures, from its vintage Victorian era mansions and buildings to its lively Greek traditions and community.

Lyme Disease Awareness

“My late 40s were marked by debilitating fatigue, tremendous brain fog, aching all over, burning in my feet and tingling in my hands, skin rashes, joint pain, chest pain, heart palpitations, mood changes, and poor sleep. I know what it’s like to start and end every day feeling like you have a terrible flu. Over several years, I experienced virtually every known symptom of Lyme disease.”

I could have written the paragraph above except that it was the beginning of my 50’s. That paragraph comes from Dr. Bill Rawls, MD who was also stricken with the most debilitating symptoms of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is on the rise in Florida. Called the “great imitator,” Lyme disease can present a multitude of symptoms that mimic hundreds of other illnesses, including Multiple Sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety, fibromyalgia, ALS, Alzheimer’s, depression, and autoimmune disorders to name a few.

Keep in mind, you do not have to find a tick or have a bullseye rash to have been transmitted with Lyme. Ticks can bite and dislodge before you ever get a chance to identify it.

PREVENTION:

• Wear light colored clothing

• Use products that include 20% deet on your skin

• Use permethrin on clothing, shoes, hiking gear, tents etc.

• Check your skin and clothing for ticks as soon as you come indoors. Immediately after you come in from being outside in a wooded or grassy area, check your body for ticks. Pay attention to the following parts of the body, where ticks are often found:

• Around your waist

• In and around your ears

• Inside your belly button

• The backs of your knees

• In and around your head and body hair

• Between your legs

• Armpits

After many conversations with people that were unaware they could get a tick borne illness in Tampa Bay, I was compelled to write this article. You can be in your back yard or the beach and get a tick bite. It’s been 7 years for me and I still have cognitive issues. I manage symptoms through several holistic modalities. In addition to many books, symposiums, and real world trial and error, Project Lyme has also been a wealth of information for me.

• Take a shower and tumble clothes in the dryer before washing.

Please be diligent. I do not want anyone else to suffer from this debilitating disease.

Protect SEA TURTLES During Nesting

The Florida marine turtle nesting season is from May to October each year.

There are seven species of sea turtles including the green turtle, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, olive ridley, Kemp’s ridley and flatback. All but the olive ridley and flatback are found in Florida. Females nest every two or three years during the summer when they crawl to the shore to dig a nest in the sand using their rear fins. The female deposits about 100 eggs the size of ping pong balls in the nest. She covers the eggs with sand when she’s finished and returns to the ocean. Male sea turtles never return to the shore after hatching. Only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood.

There are simple steps everyone can take to help protect marine turtles such as:

• Not leaving objects on the beach overnight (refer to the City’s Leave No Trace ordinance)

• Knocking down sand castles and filling in holes before leaving the beach

• Placing all trash and recyclables in the proper containers

• Drawing the curtains at night to keep light from being seen from the beach

• Shielding all exterior lighting, using the least amount of lighting necessary, keeping lights low to the ground, and using long-wavelength (amber) bulbs. If you live or stay within view of the Gulf, be sure to turn off the lights inside your house when you leave and keep your curtains drawn when you are home. Also, make sure any exterior lights visible from the beach are turtle compliant. Do not use flashlights or cellphones on the beach at night. Learn more about proper lighting by referring to the City’s Coastal Lighting Standards.

Call the FWC Wildlife Alert number at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922) to report:

• Stranded hatchlings

• Harassment of sea turtles

• Disturbance of nests

• Entangled sea turtles

• Disoriented hatchlings

• Dead or injured sea turtles or hatchlings

TAMPA BAY MUSIC TRIVIA

The Doors’ lead singer, Jim Morrison, spent the first three years of his life in Clearwater. He moved away briefly and back again on several occasions. At 18, he entered St. Petersburg Junior College to study philosophy and psychology and wound up attending Florida State University.

Legendary singer-songwriter Ray Charles was raised in Greenville, Florida. After losing his eyesight at age 7, his mother sent him to the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine. One of his earliest recordings was the “St. Pete Florida Blues”, a 1950 song Charles wrote about a girl he fell in love with in St. Petersburg. In 2019, the city of St. Petersburg declared February 15th Ray Charles Day. You will even find a Ray Charles Boulevard in Tampa.

Country music legend Mel Tillis was born in Tampa and grew up in small-town Pahokee, near Florida’s Lake Okeechobee. He later on attended the University of Florida and would take a job with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in Tampa.

Best known for his 1981 hit “Key Largo”, Bertie Higgins grew up in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Higgins first band would perform all over the Tampa Bay area. After graduating from Tarpon Springs High School, Higgins studied journalism and Fine Arts at St. Petersburg College. After leaving college, Higgins joined the Tommy Roe Band and the Roemans as their drummer, touring with groups such as the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys.

These stories can be found in the book Tampa Bay Music Roots by Charlie Souza and Keith Wilkins. The book is available at Coastal Market 607 in Largo or you can, scan here !

Walking Tours

Florida’s history stretches back to the last glacial period, with indigenous people settling the state over 14,000 years ago. European discovery and settlement by the Spanish occurred in the 16th century, nearly a hundred years before the English founded Jamestown. This rich history is part of what users of our Florida Stories app will experience. Florida Stories is a free app with over thirty-five walking tours of communities across Florida. From Pensacola down to the Florida Keys, this app allows anyone to learn about some of Florida’s most historically rich and culturally diverse communities.

Florida Stories is designed to:

• explore the history and heritage of Florida

• increase knowledge about and appreciation of local communities

• connect small communities on a statewide platform

• build collaboration between community partners Each tour’s scripts are designed and written by experts on state and local history. A professional narrator is used to record the scripts in a sound studio. The result is a high-quality tour that can be taken on-site or listened to from anywhere in the world.

Download the free Florida Stories app today! As you stroll through the streets, listen to the lively and colorful stories about these unique communities.

KEY LIME PIE

The key lime pie has been traced back to the early 20th century. Its exact origins are unknown, but the first formal mention of key lime pie as a recipe may have been made by William Curry, a ship salvager and Key West’s first millionaire; his cook, “Aunt Sally”, made the pie for him.

Some people believe that Aunt Sally simply modified the recipe for lemon icebox cake and used key limes instead of lemons because both recipes require sweetened condensed milk and citrus juice.

INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULB?

The incandescent light bulb was invented in Florida? This one is only partially true. Thomas Edison’s primary residence was in New Jersey during most of the time that he was inventing the incandescent light bulb, but he spent his winters at his home in Fort Myers. He worked on many of his 1,093 patented inventions there. So Florida gets some of the credit.

SUNSCREEN

One of the first popular sunscreen products was invented for the United States military by Florida airman and pharmacist Benjamin Green in 1944. This came about because of the hazards of sun overexposure to soldiers in the Pacific tropics at the height of World War II.

MIRANDA RIGHTS

You know the part of the Miranda rights where they say “If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you”?

Clarence Earl Gideon was a man with an eighthgrade education who ran away from home when he was in middle school. He spent much of his early adult life as a drifter, spending time in and out of prisons for nonviolent crimes.

Gideon was charged with breaking and entering with the intent to commit a misdemeanor, which is a felony under Florida law. We can thank this unlikely hero for public defenders.

FROZEN CONCENTRATED ORANGE JUICE

Frozen concentrated orange juice was invented by University of Florida’s Citrus Research and Education Center. In the 1940’s, C.D. Atkins was asked by the Florida Citrus Commission to improve the quality of processed orange products, to help produce better juice for the armed forces, and at the same time improve the efficiency of Florida’s orange crop.

NEW SUPERCAPACITOR

The new supercapacitor was invented in FSU’s AeroPropulsion, Mechatronics and Energy Center (AME), and Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) by Jim P. Zheng, a Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering professor. The new technology addresses current supercapacitor weaknesses that limit their effective use compared to traditional rechargeable battery technology.

ENDANGERED SPECIES

COLD-AIR PROCESS OF REFRIGERATION

John Gorrie (born October 3, 1803, Charleston, SCdied June 16, 1855, Apalachicola, FL) was the American physician who discovered the cold-air process of refrigeration as the result of experiments to lower the temperature of fever patients by cooling hospital rooms. In 1842, Gorrie designed and built an aircooling apparatus for treating yellow-fever patients.

GATORADE

Gatorade was formulated in 1965 by researchers at the University of Florida in an effort to help the then-struggling Florida Gators football team.

BONDO PUTTY

Bondo putty is an automotive body filler; a twopart mix of talc and plastic. It was introduced in 1955 and developed by World War II veteran and automotive repair shop owner Robert Merton Spink of Miami. Commonly used as a term to describe any type of automotive repair putty, the word Bondo is actually a trademarked name of a product from the company 3M (Minnesota Mining Manufacturing).

ACT OF 1973

Nathaniel Reed, American environmentalist and political aide from Florida who served as an environmental adviser to Florida Governor Claude R. Kirk Jr. in the 1960s, co-wrote the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Among the first species protected were the Florida panther, manatees, and alligators.

NASCAR

The driving force behind the establishment of NASCAR was William “Bill” France Sr. (1909-1992), a mechanic and auto-repair shop owner from Washington, DC, who in the mid-1930s moved to Daytona Beach. The Daytona area was a gathering spot for racing enthusiasts, and France became involved in racing cars and promoting races. France felt there was a need for a governing body to sanction and promote racing. He gathered members of the racing community to discuss the idea, and NASCAR was born, with its official incorporation in February 1948. France served as NASCAR’s first president and played a key role in shaping its development in the sport’s early decades.
