The guide to health-conscious living for individuals, the community, & the planet

Living Aloha - Mission Statement In the Hawaiian language, ALOHA stands for “hello,” “goodbye,” and “love.” The deeper meaning of ALOHA is “the joyful (oha) sharing (alo) of life energy (ha) in the present (alo).” Aloha is an expression of love, peace, compassion, presence, and the essence of life. Additionally, aloha means affection, mercy, sympathy, kindness, sentiment, grace, and charity. Living the “aloha lifestyle” is a way to attain optimum health, peace, love, and compassion in yourself so you can spread it to your world. Living Aloha Magazine incorporates all aspects of aloha into our daily lives and features Maui as a learning center for how to live aloha. We support the aloha lifestyle through honoring and advocating for all of life by elevating consciousness toward healthful living practices that sustain the individual, the community, and the planet. We will serve as a single-source provider of information on healthy living and green products, offering abroad range of choices and solutions to help reduce our carbon footprint. Living Aloha Magazine is poised to become the premier resource for Maui’s residents and visitors looking to promote health, community, culture, and sustainability. And it will give others an opportunity to learn how to bring more health and balance into their lives. The magazine’s specialized focus on yoga, meditation, hiking, healthy food, and sustainable gardening resonates with its mission to spread the love and help elevate the consciousness of the world. Our vision is to attract prominent leaders to work with us in creating a compelling aloha culture that the publication can reflect and promote, thus creating an outwardly rippling vortex of energy benefitting the wider global community while attracting people from other islands, states, and countries to Maui, bringing further prosperity. Living Aloha By Mark Sheehan

Camping out at Makena Beach over the Christmas holidays 43 years ago was a memorable experience: everyone naked, lots of yoga, a long way to water, a few too many stoners - an ecstatic, funky and just plain wonderful experience. As a beach and sun enthusiast, I knew how unique and wonderful this part of Hawaii was. It was obvious that it needed to be cleaned up and preserved. Many of the ‘residents’ believed they had found a psychedelic health spa. And it was, for a while. When I moved to Oahu a few years later, I realized that a great many people in and out of the health field had similar visions of making Hawaii a preventive health mecca, a place for renewing one’s strength and vitality. I soon became involved with a group planning a holistic health center in Honolulu and by the time I moved to Maui in 1978, had created Hawaiian Health Holidays, the first of many early efforts to tap into the growing interest in health. The HHH concept was based upon the notion of staying at a retreat center, eating good food, practicing yoga, dance, and tai chi, in addition to taking day trips to beaches, waterfalls, and sacred sites. The concept was simple: get healthy and learn ways to stay that way back home.

Rainbow Eucalyptus, Maui, Hawaii

HHH was undercapitalized and lacked the skills needed to market successfully. (If only the internet had only been around then!) The attempt, however, put me in touch with a world of people who had a dream or a vision. It became clear early on that the people with the vision lacked funds and the folks with the money didn’t have that particular vision. But by the late 80s things had changed and I began meeting many people who had both. So many, in fact, that I got into real estate so I could learn the zoning regulations, the better to advise and guide such efforts. At one point, I approached the late Chris Hart when he was Maui County Planning Director to inquire about zoning for retreats. Chris said that his staff had just completed a week discussing such an idea and that it looked like Olinda and Haiku were well suited for such retreats. Turns out, though, that the concept never got to completion. However, the lack of authorized zoning didn’t discourage a lot of people from trying to make it happen. Other efforts were made on the major islands, the most successful and long lasting being Kalani Honua on Hawaii Island which provides an Esalen environment perfect for workshops of all kinds along with healthy meals and other amenities. Page 6 Living Aloha

In the resort world there was indifference to the spa concept until the Grand Wailea was built with its extravagant and luxurious spa; suddenly every hotel upgraded their massage services, quickly moving the massage rooms from down by the laundry to down by the the beach. Other services followed and today the hotels employ hundreds of massage staff, fitness trainers, and classes including yoga, pilates, gyro tonics, tai chi, and more. The new and fabulous Lumeria center on Maui has taken the vision to another level combining more of the things we’d all like to experience in a resort type setting far from the resorts. At the other end of the scale, Halemano in Kipahulu provides a fairy world, ocean front setting perfect for meditation and contemplation. On another level entirely, there is SLIM, Maui’s Sustainable Living Institute, which is training a new generation to think differently about how we might survive in the new era of climate change and scarce resources, including food. And all over the state there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of organic farms that are training a new cadre of young people to live close to the land, build with new materials, learn how to regenerate depleted soil, and grow organic food. So this is a good time for the arrival of a magazine that caters to this confluence of increased interest in developing our own resources so that we may build a new world from our shared vision of health as wealth. For the first time Maui will finally have a publication that is solely focused on yoga, yoga retreats and teacher training, massage schools and various other bodywork practitioners and training programs, healthy and conscious eating, sustainable living and farming, renewable energy, creative expression through music, dance, and the arts, not to mention human rights, GLBT rights, animal rights, and environmental activism. We want people to come to Maui and other parts of Hawaii from all over the world to experience and learn these practices so that they can go back home and implement said practices where they live. Besides distributing Living Aloha Magazine all over Maui to residents and tourists, we will be distributing on the mainland to many yoga studios, retreat centers, natural food stores, and vegan/vegetarian restaurants. We will also have distribution to many international yoga studios and retreat centers. We are now on our way to promote the Hawaii we all know to the rest of the world.

How to Find the Retreat that Will Change your Life By Amanda Russcol

As a yoga teacher and raw chef, retreats have been a part of my world for as long as I have known about down dog and kale. The idea of taking people away from all their distractions - work, kids, responsibilities, routine - was always very appealing to me. Moving out of our everyday worlds so that we have time to focus on ourselves and gain perspective on our lives can be an incredibly transformational experience. I’ve been attending, hosting and working on retreats for almost ten years now, and I am still blown away by how quickly and thoroughly they make a difference in people’s lives. Over the years, I’ve seen a pattern emerge - the conditions that make a retreat so much more than a vacation with strangers. With the right conditions, I saw guests consistently find not only the right questions to ask, but also the answers to those questions and the path of action that would lead to the desired result. I saw them find the inspiration to make big and small changes in their lives and to reconnect with a part of themselves that had been neglected for too long. Sometimes people came knowing that they needed a change, but more often people came for a little fun and a break from their daily routine. No matter why they came, I have seen people go through the same process time after time. I recognized that there were certain necessary ingredients in order for that transformational process to occur. Here is a step-by-step guide so that you can choose the right retreat for you and then make the most of it once you’re there: 1. Location, location, location! Do you love basking in the sun, or does wintery weather make you feel alive? Do you love the ocean or the mountains (or the jungle or the desert)? Find a place (and a season) that will make you feel grateful to be there. Everyone has their own favorite, and being in a place that inspires you will make a difference. 2. Move your body, in all your favorite ways. Our bodies were made to be active. We feel better when we exercise. However, many of us have learned to appreciate exercise for how it makes us feel after the workout. We go to the gym so we can look better, to lower our blood pressure or to decrease the risk of heart disease, or we go to yoga so our back pain go away. These are all good reasons to exercise - great reasons. But an amazing retreat will help you reconnect to the feeling of movement as its own reward. Whether it is a partner yoga class that has you flying high or a swim in crystal clear water with fish and turtles, retreats are the perfect time to reconnect with what makes your body feel good during and after your “workout”. Make sure you choose a retreat that will have the right amount of activity for you - not too much for your body and experience, but enough to challenge you to keep it up once you go home - and the right kind of activity for you. 3. Find like-minded people. What always surprised me at past retreats were the guests. Every group was different, and every group seemed to have been picked, member by member, to create exactly the right mix of people to stimulate, Page 8 Living Aloha

encourage and support each other through the week. I still don’t know how this magic works, but I know that it helped a lot that each guest chose our retreats for the activities and themes we offered. Whether you’re into yoga, crystals and vegan fare or bungee jumping, cardio and drum circles, there’s a retreat out there that’s right for you, and when you find it, you will also find like-minded people. When you get to the retreat, try to spend time with each guest on your retreat - every one of them can enhance your experience and teach you something important, so don’t be afraid to talk to that weird guy sitting by himself - he might surprise you. A big part of the way we socialize and connect with people is through food and diet choice. Paleo, vegan, whole food or raw, there are a lot of choices out there and finding a retreat that will offer your favorite will make you happier at least three times a day. Choose a retreat that offers the kind of food that you like food that not only tastes good, but makes your body feel good, too. 4. Unplug so you can connect. Getting the space you need can be hard in our society. We’re expected to be plugged in and responsive at all times. Emails, texts, kids, bosses, friends, clients, tweets, deadlines and so many more interruptions to one’s flow make taking time to think, rest and connect with ourselves nearly impossible. Make sure you pick a retreat where you and the other guests will be as unplugged as possible. Retreats where you need special permission to make phone calls or use a computer ensure that you and your retreat buddies (aka your new best friends) will be focused on yourselves and each other while still having the access you need

to check in on your kids or make sure the office hasn’t exploded in your absence - (FYI, it hasn’t). It is also helpful to have a retreat that facilitates sharing while giving you space to be on your own. Sharing circles and communal meals and activities are a great way to connect with others, but you also have to find time to be with yourself. Pick a retreat that makes time for you to be alone - a few mornings without programming or specified meditation times each day are nice times to check in with yourself. Also make sure that your retreat is scheduling adequate time for sleeping. Most retreat website will post schedules before you book. 5. Awaken your senses. We live so much of our lives in our heads and on our screens. An amazing retreat will awaken your senses. Between the incredible food, the breath-taking location and the activities invigorating your body, all your senses will come to life. The sounds of laughter and music, the sights of natural beauty, the smells of fresh flowers and clean air, the taste of fresh, clean, creative food to nourish your body, the feel of a cool waterfall on your skin or a new friend supporting you in a yoga pose - all your senses should be engaged and fulfilled. This will enhance your experience, and just as importantly, it will send you home with new awareness and expectations. You will find yourself seeking out sensory experiences, like stopping to smell the roses or making time for a massage. Once you are at your retreat, make sure you are really there, in the moment, enjoying each and every moment of it. 6. Be open-minded. Retreats can be magical. Things happen that don’t make sense, and things that have never made sense suddenly will. Part of the experience is being open to trying new things, finding new ways to see the world and hearing other people’s stories and beliefs. Try to let go of your judgments and fears; see what it’s like to be open and accepting, even if things don’t go exactly as you expected or that weird guy starts talking about far-out topics. That openness is ultimately the most transformative part of any good retreat. For a guest to go home with a greater sense of wonder and a broader scope of potential for his or her life, that is the most transformational thing we can offer as retreat hosts. “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is - infinite.” -William Blake Amanda Russcol is a raw chef and yoga instructor in Denver, CO. Sustainable Living with a Light Footprint by Steve Blake

My wife and I live in harmony with the aina - the earth. We grow vegetables and fruit on our little organic farm on Maui. We get our power from the sun using solar panels. We catch rainwater for washing and watering. We cook and dry fruit with a solar oven. Our water is heated simply, utilizing the energy of the sun. We share our land with the birds and with the trees; in the gentle and fertile climate of Maui there is enough for both man and beast.

Sustainability Education on Maui by Daniel Betts

While many have already stepped on the path toward sustainability, many others are now seeking the knowledge they need to make a positive change for the benefit of their world and community. Where to start? Here are a couple ideas. The University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service is currently taking applications for the 2014, Maui Master Gardener training program, which is to be held at the University of Hawaii-Maui College campus in Kahului. The Master Gardener course is 16-week program and in order to be a successful certified Master Gardener, students will need to complete 50 hours of volunteering at plant clinics, workshops or even by writing advice columns for local newspapers. “We help people grow food in their gardens Living Aloha Page 13

and that is a huge part of sustainability on Maui,” says Lorraine Brooks, Urban Horticulture Agent for the University of Hawaii. Classes are open to anyone over the age of 18. Enrolment will cost $125. For more information please contact Lorraine at 808244-3242, ext. 229 or email llb@hawaii.ed. The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) is another valuable resource available on Maui. SLIM declares in their brochure that they “intended to serve as a center for the gathering of information, generation of new knowledge and technology with the broader community and will forge new leaders who will implement this new way of thinking, planning and executing future growth.” While firstly informing “Maui Nui’s needs and opportunities in sustainability,” SLIM seeks also to inform “other islands around the world, as well as geographies that could be characterized as island-like.” For more information email SLIMat SLIMinfo@hawaii. edu or visit their website at www.sustainablemaui.org. Many may find attending a workshop helpful. Sustainable Living: Back to Nature is a workshop available through the Kolealea Agricultural Center. Their mission is, “to create a sustainable future through the education of youth in organic food growth and life sustainability.” For information call 808-572-0499 or email info@kolealea.com Anyone interested in acquiring nature skills may be interested in the Nature Skills Certification available through the Earth Medicine Institute. This thorough course includes 100 hours and five weekends of learning. For more information call 808-9374218 or email david@davidbruceleondard.com. Sustainability is best achieved as a community effort, so be sure to also talk with your neighbors about sustainability activities in your community.

Dance, Maui Style by Andrea Perkins

Dance may be the most ancient and direct way to release stress and access joy, and Upcountry Maui knows it. On a good week on the north shore alone, the movement enthusiast can attend a hula class, an African dance class, a samba lesson, and a contact improv workshop. He or she can also attend several conscious dance events, learn a hip hop or jazz funk routine, and brush up those belly dance skills.

Hula has connected native Hawaiians to their land and gods for centuries. (Stay tuned for a more in depth look at the contemporary hula scene on Maui in an upcoming issue of this magazine.) While most hula classes are to be found in Wailuku, the Maui Yoga Shala, located in Paia, offers weekly Hawaiian chanting, hula, hot hula fitness, and Tahitian classes. The Hawaiian islands have always been a place where east meets west, geographically as well as culturally. Sarala Dandekar teaches Odissi, a form of classical dance from India which also fuses spirituality and dance. Sarala sees dance as a primary way to learn about how a culture expresses its values, traditions, and rituals.

“I enjoy both taking and teaching dance classes on Maui,” says Joie Yasha, who teaches a weekly African dance class with live drums in Makawao. “As a teacher I am constantly enthralled and inspired by the hearts of everyone in the class. It shows in the dance and I deeply feel that the land and ocean have a big part to play in supporting this. Everyone feels “I enjoy collaborating across borders as a way to break embraced and encouraged to move from their soul.” down prejudices and fear and find the commonality between all cultures,” she says. “Living here, our In addition to several state of the art dance studios, Maui children have some incredible advantages and boasts “nature’s dance floor,” as Lisa Evans, founder of exposure to some of the best teachers of Hawaiian Beach Dance, puts it. Dance shows us that we can actually trust our own bodies, not to mention the very ground beneath our feet, and most of the time, that is enough. animals, we must live the healthy and sustainable life we want to live than the life corporate America wants us to.

Even though this is the first issue of Living Aloha, we have been blown away by the incredible response we have received from the Maui wellness community for our health-oriented publication. Before even going to press for the first time we realized we would need to limit our advertising space in order to maintain a good editorial balance. This is a wonderful way to begin a new venture and we are feeling most blessed by this response.

With much sincere gratitude we would like to highly recommend the following businesses that have chosen to support our endeavor. Many of these local businesses are not just names on a list but are highly valued members of our community who provide unique and much valued health-related products and services to locals and visitors from all over the world. We are all spreading aloha. Maui is changing the world.

As a regular feature of Living Aloha Magazine, we plan to highlight all our new advertisers and seeing as this our premier issue this first list will be understandably large, but this fact also demonstrates the importance and significance of the message we want to convey, and proves that it is shared by many. Leilani Farm Sanctuary: Shelter and care for rescued animals eyelashes!) and reached out to gently stroke her elegant neck. The Sanctuary feels peaceful and harmonious: chickens mingle with rabbits, goats hang out with donkeys and pigs. A blind pig named George (whose artfully-painted house, ironically, has the best view-spot on the land) lumbers about among ducks and geese. As I cuddled a chicken named Pumpkin, I felt her soft-feathered warmth and came to know something of her soul. Entering a rabbit yard, I spotted two charming African tortoises, Clarice and Clementine. Yes, it’s true, the legendary hare and the tortoise are, in reality, quite compatible cohabitants! The Sanctuary is unique in the freedom it offers these animals to be themselves in our presence. That intimacy with the animals, on their terms, is part of what promises to be a life-and heart-changing experience for visitors.

by Barry Sultanoff Leilani Farm Sanctuary, an all-volunteer non-profit organization located on nearly eight heavenly acres of tropical land, was created to provide shelter and care for rescued animals, and humane education to the community. There are rolling green pastures for goats and donkeys to graze, hundreds of trees for the cats to climb, a botanical garden for rabbits, and jungle environments for the chickens to explore. Visitors experience an unforgettable adventure in paradise, meeting friendly farm animals and learning about the history of the land and the animals who reside there. The spirit of Leilani Farm Sanctuary is best conveyed by the Hawaiian phrase Lani Ku Honua: “Heaven on Earth.” The Sanctuary prides itself on being a paradise for rescued animals. But humans can do themselves a special favor, too, by visiting the Sanctuary grounds and mingling with its four-legged and winged residents. Growing up in rural Maryland, I often saw deer grazing near my family home. I was enchanted by their graceful movements and regal antlers. But not until I encountered Veronica, the spotted deer at Leilani Farm Sanctuary, had I ever looked a deer directly in the eye (and oh my, what

The Sanctuary’s mission is, in a word, compassion. When one falls in love with a chicken, rabbit, goat, duck, or pig, he no longer imagines that animal on his dinner plate -- but rather as a lifetime friend. Farm tours are offered Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. Visitors are invited to kiss a donkey, cuddle a chicken, pet the friendly cats, give a pig a belly rub, brush the goats, and feed carrots to furry rabbits. Reservations are required. For another hands-on immersion, one can volunteer for half a day or more. In fact, there are many ways to help: donations of time, needed supplies, and of course, tax-deductible monetary contributions are most welcome at this storybook farm in Haiku. The Farm’s founder and director, Laurelee Blanchard, is a talented photographer whose photos of visitors and the animals are featured on the Sanctuary website. If you’re lucky, you will be offered prize photographs of your visit there, to take home--and to spark a lifetime of memories.
