Happy Holidays~Hau’oli Lanui — (pronounced how-oh-lee la-new-ee)
ISSUE 6 • NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2014
Publisher/Editor: Carlos Garcia In this holiday issue, Denise LaBarre writes a heart-felt message for getting through the holidays in a healthy way. A newcomer to Living Aloha Magazine, Hannah Hilton, shares with us her journey on the yogic path; she says that through a dedicated practice, she finds her soul sitting quietly in a Vinyasa class, her saving grace. On 25 acres of beautiful ocean-view farmland in eastern Haiku, Ahimsa Sanctuary Farm stands out as an organic, permaculture beacon of sustainability. In this issue, we feature their farm, and outline some of their permaculture practices. Visitors to Ahimsa Sanctuary Farm will learn beneficial ways to create their own garden sanctuary. We encourage our readers to visit their farm and enjoy a farm tour and a healthy, delicious farm to table meal. The meal is often followed by live music and dancing. Our own Sabrina Harmony Sims brings you food substitutions that are not only healthful, but flavorful too. Instead of commercial, packaged and processed foods, she suggests naturally sweet ways to achieve the same effect, without the detrimental consequences that normally accompany a tasty indulgence. And, finally, we also address the new and exciting weight loss program called Purium. Temple of Peace offers this program and has had enormous weight loss success within the community. And, especially when combined with their in-house colon hydrotherapy and spa services, people are really seeing results.
Thank you for being with us this first year. We look forward to our second year, to continue offering you healthy options for a sustainable future.
Happy New Year! Hau’oli Makahiki Hou

The SHAKA Movement
updates
by Carlos Garcia Unfortunately, by press time, we will not know the result of the moratorium vote. But we must say that the effort that our community has put into this has been overwhelming. People knocking on doors, people going to events— facebook, flyers, dvd’s, magnets, t-shirts, stickers, hats, and many people within this community have said that they were using our magazine as an educational tool on the issue as well, referring to our in-depth story featuring the SHAKA movement. We felt it was gravely important to feature the five citizens of the SHAKA movement on the cover of our last issue. We’d like to thank Joe Mellone for writing the article, which we know has really made a difference in our community. Many have volunteered their time to arrange meetings and talks with the members of our community.
Your power, as a community, has the ability to make a difference.
That is Aloha, and that, we feel, is at the heart of Living Aloha.

‘Tis the Season:
A Case for a Gentler Approach by Denise LaBarre
“‘Tis the season to be jolly,” says the famous Christmas carol, written before electric lights pushed away the darkness of winter. The thoughtful gatherings that broke up the long winter nights have become a non-stop ride of excessive shopping, overdoing, and overeating. Stores display Christmas decorations even before Halloween, and the media encourage us to buy “the perfect gift” and prepare “perfect meals.” This can be crazy-making when our circadian rhythms tell us to be quiet, contemplative and sleepy, and depressing when our circumstances don’t measure up to the artificial glitz and glitter.
We have all lost loved ones and holidays remind us who’s not seated at the table anymore. My mother and my dog passed recently and for me, this holiday season will be a quieter one as my heart heals and I have less energy to shop or cook or gather. I will spend time this Thanksgiving remembering my mom and giving thanks for her love, sense of humor, and all the times we laughed so hard at silly things and ourselves. When I notice her absence, I will slow down to feel. The pain is my heart stretching to hold the love and the bigness of the life process.
A period of slow, digestive inactivity is built-in to the natural cycles that nourish and sustain us—if we move with them. Plants and animals slow growth, or hibernate in winter. They are wisely conserving energy as the sun’s light and warmth are less available to refuel them. Food is scarce and nights are long. Depression is often our deep psyche’s call to go inward and process the deep sadness or anger of the previous year. Holiday time can trigger feelings of grief swept aside during the brighter, naturally more-active months. It is not only appropriate but important for your well-being to take this relatively darker time to slow down and reflect inwardly. Light a candle for those you’ve lost during the previous year; reflect on (digest) the bounty and challenges you’ve lived through during this past cycle. That way you can begin the new cycle rested, digested and ready for new planting. 8

YOGA.
Oh my saving grace! by Hannah Hilton
Before I had a very dedicated practice to the art of yoga, I was a lost little girl. I was trying to discover myself everywhere, but at the root of it all-I was trying to discover my own soul. I searched for it in other people. I searched for it in alcohol. I searched for it in food. I searched for it in the stars at night. I just could not seem to find me, until one day in a yoga class. On a Thursday morning I was sitting ever so quietly in a vinyasa class where we were told we would be learning a chant. I thought to myself “you have got to be kidding me”. I was still new to yoga and chanting just seemed odd and out there for me. But I participated anyways. We learned the Gāyatrī Mantra. Translated loosely to “We meditate on the glory of the divine Light; may he inspire our understanding” S. Radhakrishnan. Oh what glory and what beauty came from these words escaping my lips. Tears came to my eyes. I felt at peace. I had never felt so close to myself. I finally felt like I was on the right path! It seemed to have taken me forever to get there, but I was making progress. I dove right in to all that was yoga from that moment on. I began to look forward to chanting and exercising my worship tools with others in the studio. As a collective group the energy level is so high, you feel supported, comfortable, and able to achieve such a high state of understanding. This was the foundation of learning to love myself and find out who I truly was deep down in the depths of my soul. Through each asana, each breath, each om, each chant, I discovered pieces to the puzzle. I worked through heartbreak. I worked through insecurities. I worked through my spirituality. I organized my thoughts. I discovered my dreams. I untangled my emotions.
Yoga saved me from myself. I was in a dark place, fearful of all the change coming my way and yoga was the light that lead me to peace and understanding. Yoga taught me gratitude from witnessing the encouragement, nurturing, and love from the instructor. Watching my fellow peers thank the instructor for all the light they brought each and everyone of us—that was pure gratitude. Yoga taught me peace within myself while laying in savasana! Letting it all go and just feeling what is real: my breath, my body, and my soul. Most importantly, yoga taught me self-love. Yoga has taught me to love my body, my mind, my heart, my breath, and my soul. All of these things collectively united make me who I am as a person. Through the practice of yoga I have learned that without loving all of these aspects, I could never truly love myself, therefore, never able to have the full capacity to love another. A yoga practice takes the desire to learn, to explore, and to at times be uncomfortable. Not everyone is super flexible or super strong. There are days where you can touch your toes and do a headstand. And there are days where you cannot. It isn’t about the finality of the pose, it’s about the journey and what you learn while you are on the path to discovery. It is a journey of self-love. A journey of love itself. This journey is worth the sweat, the sore muscles, and the released emotions. These are just stops on the way to our final destination—peace within ourselves.
Hannah Hilton is just a woman on a journey—with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair. She is melodically mellow minded with the creative curiosity of a young child. A little yin and a little yang, a nelipot who loves Mother Nature, yoga, live music, good friends, good conversation, good food, art, and a lover of laughter! Follow Hannah’s journey at justawomanonajourney.blogspot.com or connect with her on Facebook. 10

AHIMSA
Sanctuary Farm by Sabrina Harmony Sims
Ahimsa Sanctuary Farm (ASF) is located on 25 acres of rolling pastures and thickly wooded gulches, with an expansive ocean view in Haiku, Maui. “Ahimsa” is the Sanskrit term for “nonviolence” popularized by Ghandi. ASF applies this value in its approach to sustainable, ecologically attuned farming. ASF practices organic farming methods, free from GMO seeds, synthetic fertilizers, and pesticides, to raise nutritious whole foods and medicinal herbs. Several varieties of bamboo are grown for windbreaks, construction materials, and musical instruments. Sipping on Maui Sacred Earth Soothing Herbal Tea Blend (handmade from dried medicinal plants grown at ASF), under a double rainbow on the lanai overlooking the ocean, Dr. Lew Abrams (co-owner of ASF) describes the permaculture practices used at the farm. He gives credit to Eddy Garcia of Maui New Earth Systems for designing and implementing many of the farm’s innovative agricultural systems.

Permaculture design takes a whole systems approach to agriculture, inspired by patterns observed in natural ecosystems. Bamboo windbreaks protect vegetable and herb gardens that are irrigated with nutrient rich water from adjacent fishponds. Solar lights on the ponds attract insect pests into the water, offering extra protein and calcium to the tilapia and blue channel catfish. Taro grown in natural living bog filters is nourished with nitrogen from the fish waste in the pond water, while removing the nitrates that can build up and become toxic to fish. Weeds gathered from the orchards and garden beds are fed to the ducks and tortoises. Earthen berms used to conserve and channel irrigation and rain water are companion planted, creating symbiotic guilds of ground cover (mint, oregano, comfrey, sweet potato), shrubs (lemon grass, vetiver, yakon, galanga ginger,

Depleted soils are being restored through re-mineralization, composting, cover crops, vermiculture, and reintroducing mycorrhizal fungi and other effective microorganisms. Biodynamic preparations are applied to help balance the life force of the land.

Steady trade winds refresh ASF’s Northshore Maui location, bringing rain from the open Pacific to water the gardens and orchards. The blustery squalls continue up the mountain, leaving bright sunny skies—perfect conditions for the efficient use of non-polluting solar and wind power. ASF’s grid-tied system helps meet more than half of the farms’ energy needs. Dr. Abrams is currently researching the next generation of battery technology before expanding to include an off-grid energy system that will help to eliminate the electric bill.
Farm tours every Saturday from 4–6 pm include fresh-picked dinner, educational talks and entertainment.
ASF is also home to Blue Mountain Sculpture, Silent Breeze Pottery, and a 90-foot diameter stone Medicine Wheel. Through herb walks, tea tasting, and farm tours, visitors to Ahimsa Sanctuary Farm learn sustainable ways to grow nutritious, healthy food while reestablishing their connection to the natural world.

Healthy FoodSubstitutions by Sabrina Harmony Sims
AVOCADO
QUINOA
Starting with my ice cream recipe, instead of the unhealthy-for-human-consumption cow’s milk, I like to use berries as a base. Take frozen berries (anything and everything you enjoy is perfect; try blueberries, because they’re nutritious and delicious), and add to that some sweetened or unsweetened almond milk (just enough to cover the berries in your blender), toss in a small splash of vanilla extract and a small splash of Grade B Maple Syrup. (It’s important to choose Grade B, because it’s less refined and therefore contains more nutrients than the other options.) Blend it up and voila: a tasty, healthy treat on a warm island afternoon. Lucky for you, I’ve got a lot more where that came from! The following is a list of simple substitutions you can try for an easy boost in your healthy lifestyle plan.
Quick swaps you can make throughout your day:
SMOOTHIES
In hopes of creating a more healthy community, I’m going to share with you some of my techniques…
Fats found in coconut oil actually raise HDL (good) cholesterol too. Plus, coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is an antimicrobial, antiviral agent that can speed up the metabolism and can help in clearing up acne and other skin issues. Really, you can use it in anything; try spreading it on your morning toast or pancakes and use it in place of butter in sauce or cookies, cakes, and breads. It’s scrumptious on sweet potatoes too. It stays solid when cold, softens slightly at room temperature, and liquefies when heated, just like butter, but without the heart harming effects and it has a pleasant sweet, mellow taste that adds just a slight unassuming flavor to foods without overpowering other tastes in a dish. Crunch quinoa instead of rice.
While animal derived products like butter, cheese and mayonnaise can clog up your arteries and cause cardiovascular disease, avocados are full of healthy fats that help boost good (HDL) cholesterol and lower bad (LDL) cholesterol.
Quinoa is considered a superfood because it’s one of the few whole grains with enough amino acids to be considered a complete protein. It’s also high in antioxidants and provides 5 grams of fiber per serving. It can be eaten cold as a salad (by adding it to a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, green beans, spinach) and topping it with your favorite dressing. Or it can be eaten hot, cooked into soups and/or served as a nutrient-rich side dish.
Avocados are also packed with Vitamin C, B6, magnesium and fiber. Avocados contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, which speeds up the passage of foods and makes you feel full.
Rice and quinoa have about the same amount of calories, but quinoa has more fiber and almost 50% more protein. Quinoa also has more riboflavin (vitamin B2), folate, iron, zinc and B3.
Enjoy an avocado or some coconut oil instead of butter, cheese or mayo.
Tip: Try spreading avocado on baked breads, crackers or chips. You can also try blending avocado, cacao powder, dates and cinnamon for creamy chocolatey mousse! 14

Choose berries and dried fruit instead of processed-sugar-filled candy bars.
Drink a green smoothie or carrot juice instead of milk.
Yes, it seems like an obvious one, but sometimes it helps to have a reminder. Berries are considered superfoods because of their health enhancing properties; they provide a nutritional powerhouse. Berries (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, boysenberries, cranberries and more) are potent anti-inflammatory foods high in antioxidants and phytoflavonoids. They’re also packed with folate, manganese and much-needed vitamin C. More sweet alternatives with many of the same health benefits can include purple grapes, black currants and cherries. Tip: Try freezing berries for a cold, healthy treat with a crunch! Dried fruits are a great phytonutrient-rich option too, and a great benefit to drying your fruit is a longer shelf life. A few worthy snack choices are dried apricots, raisins, apples, papaya, peaches, banana and mango. Dried fruits are often rich in iron and can be particularly helpful for those with anemia or women on their moon.
While the dairy industry used to make the claim that “milk does a body good,” it’s actually an acidic and unhealthy option—and can leach calcium from your bones in the process of digestion; in fact, cow’s milk is so acid-forming that your body uses the calcium in your bones and teeth to neutralize the acid, and then secretes it from your body as it digests the cow’s milk. As a result of this process, studies show that osteoporosis is more prevalent among milk drinkers than vegans. In reality, the countries that consume the most dairy products also have the highest rates of osteoporosis. Dairy consumption correlates to diabetes, leukemia, ovarian and prostate cancer, not to mention that 75 percent of the population is lactose intolerant to some degree, resulting in bloating, gas, heartburn, allergies, acne, ear infections and more. And non-organic dairy contains antibiotics and growth hormones, resulting in “super-bug” evolution, premature puberty in our keiki and a host of hormone and metabolic disorders. There’s more meat and dairy industry deception that we’ve been exposed to over the years, but that’s another article.

So how do we actually get the all-important mineral calcium into our diets, to help support healthy bones and teeth? A simple blend of bananas and leafy greens with a little water in your blender does this nicely. The bananas pack ample potassium and B vitamins, too, while they cut the taste of the greens, to create a sweet, creamy drink you can easily enjoy anytime. Spinach is full of iron and those Omega 3s that support a healthy brain. While leaf lettuce and spinach are both great sources of vitamin A and thiamin, spinach and kale offer twice the amount of other vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B6 and four or five times more folate and vitamin K. But, it’s good to vary your greens. To mix it up, you can drink carrot juice; carrots are super rich in beta-carotene and calcium and support eye health and healthy bones and teeth. Drink essential oil-infused or lemon water instead of fruit juice or soda. Fruit juice, like soda, often contains unhealthy processed sugars and high fructose corn syrup. Hydrate your body with water instead. To make it more enjoyable, try adding a squeeze of lemon. Lemons are high in vitamin C and potassium. Once metabolized, lemons are also an alkaline food, which can assist in weight loss as it helps to flush out toxins. Sodas and fruit juices are often packed with processed sugar and artificial flavoring, which can lead to all manner of issues like weight gain, tooth decay and diabetes. According to the Mayo Clinic, people who consume sugary drinks regularly have a 26 percent greater risk of developing diabetes. Bonus Tip: For another fun alternative, try adding a few drops of edible essential oil into your water (examples include organic peppermint, orange, ginger or rose). So get healthy and be creative with your diet as you explore the many healthy possibilities available—rather than resorting to the junk that’s prevalent on the store shelves. Live pono with your body; you’ll feel the difference.

the Purium
Health & Weight Loss Program One Hundred years ago farmers provided everything we ate. We weren’t concerned with the quality of our food or what chemical substances we would be subject to while consuming it. In fact, we were concerned with the quantity of food and if we’d have enough to survive the winter or drought. Fast forward to today and the debate over GMO’s, pesticides, and hormones seem to envelope our minds as we make our selections at the local super market. Today, instead of quantity we are becoming obsessed with
QUALITY! It’s an understatement to say that the quality of our produce isn’t the same as it was 100 years ago. Due to the impacts of industrial farming and our disconnect from healthy soil and quality food, our bodies have become weaker making us more susceptible to diseases, immune disorders, allergies, and much more. Our obsession over quality is warranted as we try to undo the damage from decades of chemical exposure and lack of real nutrition. We diet, juice fast, cleanse, join the gym, etc., to try and make ourselves feel better and lose the excess weight
by Carlos Garcia
and toxins we gain simply from “eating”. Our quest to feel better can become time consuming, expensive and frustrating. Temple of Peace in Haiku with their many healing modalities has recently discovered Purium, a company that appears to deliver the goods.
Pure + Premium = Purium. They focus on health first and unwanted weight loss second, as a bonus. They have the right intentions and priorities. They were thrilled to find out that the products are the HIGHEST QUALITY, Organic, GMO Free, Vegan and full of real nutrition rather than fillers, binders or stimulants. The heart of their program is The 10 Day Celebrity Transformation. I have personally seen participants in this program literally shrink in a short time span. While cleanses and detoxes are at an all time high, it seems that this program is distinctly different and highly effective. I know many people that have tried many others on the market with varied results. I was especially taken by Purium’s clean amino acid protein that puts your body in an anabolic state so you maintain muscle mass as you cleanse and lose weight. Combined with the highly nutrient dense but

low calorie Powershake, your cells are satiated as your body looks for additional calories to burn, it literally turns to your fat storage, which quickly detoxifies and reshapes your entire body. The other products in the program keep you hydrated, assist in toxic waste elimination, improve sleep, increase energy and control inflammation. It’s a brilliant program attracting people who share the same desires to eat organic, GMO Free, real food nutrition for optimal health and weight. To learn more about Purium and the 10 Day Celebrity Transformation, please join them every Wednesday from 6-7pm at The Temple of Peace for a demo/ talk on Purium. For even greater benefit, you can add-on their in-house colon hydrotherapy, spa services and additional healing modalities.
They are at 575 Haiku Road, in Haiku. Contact Shelley St. John at 808-281-9156 or Lila Shakti at 808-633-1944 for more information.

David is the founder of the Earth Medicine Institute and practitioner and teacher of all five branches of traditional Chinese medicine: Acupuncture, Herbal medicine, Massage, Food Medicine and Martial Arts. He’s a deep ecologist and Hawaiian plant specialist with a Master’s Degree in traditional Chinese medicine and has a working knowledge of more than 400 traditional Hawaiian, Chinese, and Western plants. The film Earth Medicine contains interviews with important information from amazingly talented people involved in Earth-Centered culture, science, medicine, spirituality and agriculture. They have launched a Kickstarter campaign to complete the film. You can view their website with a link to the movie trailer at: earthmedicineinstitute.com. The direct link to their Kickstarter page with the trailer is: http://kck.st/ZVDGMu. If you like what you see, they are hoping you will pledge a donation, large or small, to help support the production of the film project.
If you pledge your donation, you receive gifts outlined by the level of financial support you offer, and you also get to submit a comment about the project. THE BEST
Holiday Gift
from Living Aloha Magazine - by Carlos Garcia
We want to continue inspiring all of you.
We are so happy here at Living Aloha Magazine headquarters. The Maui community has given us a huge gift.
gave the magazine a little blessing and said she’s sending energy out to attract more advertisers so we can continue getting that message out.
You have told us the information on our pages is important. We have relevant editorial that affects the health and happiness of our community and are being reminded by readers and advertisers alike. In less than a year we’ve come a long way. We want to continue inspiring all of you to become healthier, more peaceful to all beings and take care of the community for future generations. We have very high moral standards for what we offer in Living Aloha Magazine.
Half an hour later I saw them all again at Down To Earth Market and we spoke for another 20 minutes. We had another healthy, very organic conversation about food, the planet and the clean energy we take in when we eat. One week later we have more new advertisers and even Doreen Virtue’s event producer wound up taking out an ad for an event happening in January.
The word virtue kept going through my head for a couple of weeks. Virtues are universal and recognized by all cultures as basic qualities necessary for our well-being and happiness. Necessary because when we practice virtues and build the “character muscle,” we will attract what may have been missing in our lives such as fulfilling relationships, achievement of meaningful goals, and happiness. The moment we declare, “I am persevering to achieve this goal in spite of all obstacles, self-doubt and fear,” a shift occurs where we naturally become more focused, determined, and courageous, leading us to success. Then I saw an ad for a Doreen Virtue event here on Maui—more virtue. Then the amazing happened when I walked into The Green Lotus bookstore/ crystal shop right behind Doreen Virtue and her family. We spoke for 15 minutes or so and she said she really loves Living Aloha Magazine and its message. She also said she’s been vegan and has not eaten anything that wasn’t organic since 1997. Her husband and daughter are also vegan/organic. We had a short but very deep conversation. She Living Aloha

Things are really blossoming and we want to thank you, dear readers, for being part of our Living Aloha ohana, and for making this year such a blessing. So, here are some suggestions we will share that we hope will make you happy this holiday season: Go out and do something kind for someone. Exercise, dance and move
your body. Learn more about proper nutrition for your body. Practice meditation. Give gratitude for being given another day to live this life. Hug more people and animals.
24 hours a day, non-stop? The heart pumps the air and nutrients we need to keep our cells alive in this amazing body of ours. We cherish that energy. We wouldn’t want anyone to stop our hearts. Why would we want to stop the heart of another creature?
This is last but not least. Heart and love. This is what I would call the best gift ever. The most important thing to us is whatever it is that keeps our heart beating. What is the amazing power, energy, life force thing that keeps that heart beating
Let’s be more creative with our veggies and learn more about veganism and not stop any more hearts. That’s the best gift we can give.
Live with virtue. That is
LivingAloha!

“ I Am Light.” Discovering and Living From Your Impersonal Self with Dr. Wayne Dyer. Join Wayne Dyer and friends for a two-day, heart awakened weekend seminar at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa. This weekend seminar is an opportunity to free yourself, now and forever, from the domination of your personality, with its self-inflated and often self-sabotaging mind and intellect. In addition to having a personal self, there is also an impersonal self that is with you for every moment of your existence in this lifetime. This impersonal self is NOT your intellect and body. It is the invisible intelligence that animates all of life. It is responsible for all of your desires. It allows your fingernails to grow, your heart to beat, and it is the life force that supports all of life everywhere. For more information or to register call 800-654-5126 or log on to www. hayhouse.com/events.
Please send us information of your upcoming events to list in this new section of Living Aloha Magazine for relevant conscious and healthful events for our community. Send to info@livingaloha.net. 30
