Fifty States, Fifty Plans

By Daniel Betts It began in June 2011, when Professor Mark Jacobson, Mark Ruffalo, Marco Krapels and Josh Fox were sitting around chatting about their opposition to extreme energy extraction and realized that it was not enough for them to be merely against this issue; they needed to be part of the solution. At the end of the conversation The Solutions Project was born. Their mission is to use the powerful combination of science, business and culture to accelerate the transition to 100 per cent clean renewable energy.

Professor Jacobson, who recently released “eyeopening� hurricane research that suggested offshore wind farms could have significantly decreased the winds and storm surges of three devastating hurricanes that struck the US mainland, created a plan for 50 states to transition to 100 per cent renewable energy. Each plan identifies a custom mix of wind, water and solar (WWS) power to meet the energy needs of each state.

Besides stabilizing energy prices the 50 plans would also create new jobs, minimize air pollution and address climate change issues.

On the business side of The Solution Project, the team focused on market-based solutions and identified common sense economic opportunities for consumers, businesses, communities and states. Working with clean energy business leaders, policy experts, and NGOs, the team hopes to remove the barriers facing the future of clean, renewable energy.

a renewable resource energy system is estimated to cost 6.9 cents per kilowatt-hours for the same time period.

This difference would translate to an average of $9,500 per person in annual energy, health and climate costs savings in 2050. The data used for their study came from Stanford University.

In order to complete the project for Hawaii, the team estimates that the percentage of Hawaii land needed for all new WWS generators is 1.54 per cent for the footprint area and .67 per cent for the spacing area. In Hawaii the top three WWS generators needed as part of a 100 per cent projected energy mix are: Geothermal at 35 per cent, Offshore Wind Farms at 20 per cent and Onshore Wind Farms at 10 per cent. Other WWS devices that would be used in Hawaii would include Wave Devices, Tidal Turbines and Solar Generator Plants.

Using WWS electricity for everything, instead of burning fuel would improve energy efficiency in Hawaii by 49.7 per cent.

The team wants to give families, businesses and communities the tools to adopt renewable energy solutions that make economic and environmental sense.

On the cultural side, the team is seeking to show the United States how clean, renewable energy from wind, water and solar can benefit everyone. Celebrity supporters and cultural influencers have begun spreading the word about the economic, environmental and health benefits of clean renewable energy. The team has already been featured on The Late Show with David Letterman and Money with Melissa Francis.

The Plan for Hawaii In the State of Hawaii, The Solutions Project estimates that the state can be running at 100 per cent renewable resources by the year 2050. They believe their projects will create 5,900 construction jobs and 4,200 operation jobs for 40 consecutive years. The team predicts that the average fossil fuel costs in Hawaii in the next twenty years will be 39.1 cents per kilowatt-hours, with an extra 5.7 cents tacked on for health and climate costs. Alternative Education on Maui

By Daniel Betts It takes little to realize that the world in which we live today is vastly different from the world from which we have come. What kind of world will the next generation be facing? What kind of skills and expertise will the leaders of tomorrow require? Parents today are facing unprecedented decisions surrounding their children’s education. Is it enough to learn the basics, or do children today also need practical skills that will allow them to survive in a much different world.

Besides the traditional school system, the children of Maui, and their parents, have several educational alternatives to consider. In this issue of Living Aloha we are highlighting just a few of those alternatives in order to help parents, and their children, consider their future needs. We don’t know where the world is going, but our children still need to be prepared.

The Montessori School of Maui Founded in 1978, the school began by serving just 8 students in a simple Quonset hut beside St. Rita’s Church in Haiku. Today 260 students are served on a

9-acre campus ranging in age from 18 months up to the 8th Grade. The school is experiencing the highest attendance to date.

The Montessori teaching methodology, based upon the time-honored principles developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over 100 years ago, is designed to stimulate each student’s critical thinking skills, cultivate inquisitive minds and empower children to actively participate in the rapidly changing environment of the twenty-first century, and is uniquely based upon observation, peer learning, tactile learning materials and intrinsic motivation.

Within each classroom, multiple grades or levels of students are combined, creating an environment whereby students serve as leaders for one-another.

Learning with Passion

Inquiry based learning at Bodhi Community School

By Daniel Betts Beyond the obvious requirements of basic education is the intrinsic need for children to have their questions about life, and the world around them, thoughtfully answered. The questions that children ask come from their hearts – a genuine need to know their world. It is a passion that many adults may take for granted, but is what many believe truly fuels effective learning.

In Paia, down a narrow alley and behind a bright red door, a very cozy one-room schoolhouse welcomes young inquisitive minds into a safe and thoughtful environment. Besides the basics, including English, Math, Science and Social Studies, these lucky students have been introduced to “inquiry based learning.”

“I think passion is the greatest thing to create a good education,” says Ryan Luskin, head teacher at Bodhi Community School (BCS). “You’ve got to want it, and if you want it I think that’s the fundamental thing. If you want to learn then you’re going to fly no matter what you do.”

As a teacher, Ryan really wants motivated students, but he believes a good teacher is also a facilitator of learning. As an example, Ryan explained a recent project where his students participated in “The Quest for the Iron Spike.” Ryan presented his students, who are in the fourth and fifth grade, with a “mysterious” piece of old iron that had been crafted into a large nail or spike. Rather than simply tell the children what the object was, he asked the students to discover the answer for themselves while merely directing their efforts. As a result the students conducted a field trip where they interviewed locals in their community and visited a museum.

During their adventure, the students discovered that the piece of iron was actually a railroad spike for an old railway that once ran between Maui High School in Kahului and Paia. The railway had been used to transport children to school. The children had the opportunity to interview an 83-year-old former teacher who worked at a school in Haiku. The former teacher informed the students that, as a youngster, he had to wait until eighth grade before enjoying his first pair of shoes. They also learned that his family would save the bags that rice came in to use as material to make

clothing. In just one project the students at BCS utilized and enhanced their skills in writing, problem solving and interviewing.

Ryan hopes to continue to encourage his students to be driven by their questions and can foresee interviews with elders or local community leaders. The answers to his student’s questions will ultimately supplement the “nuts and bolts” basics every student is required to have.

“My ultimate goal is to create a space that is accessible to all students,” said Lindy Shapiro, principal at BCS. “I want to fill that niche. I want it to be amazing, inspired and exciting for students to learn, but I don’t want it to come with a price tag. I think there are plenty of private options out there so we don’t need to build another one.”

The model for BCS is very reminiscent of times past when parents within a community would cooperate and plan their children’s education, including hiring a teacher to facilitate learning. Parents currently pay the teachers at BCS directly.

“I think teachers are the most valuable beings on this planet, besides the kids who are learning from them,” said Lindy. “We should be paying our teachers a lot more.”

Lindy emphasizes the community aspect of their school and looks forward to involving members of the community with different learning projects the school and its students undertake, which includes creating a garden and filming MAY/JUNE 2014

a “Bodhimentary” – a film about the development of their school.

“We are a homeschool cooperative, we don’t have employees,” explains Lindy, who is hoping to increase the student population of their school to at least ten next year. While current students fall into the fourth and fifth grade, students from other grades are certainly welcome.

The students currently attending the BCS are the first class in the history of the school. They all were quick to express their enthusiasm for their school.

“I like it a lot,” said Ellie Shapiro, who is currently in fourth grade. “It’s fun.”

“I find that it’s harder,” said fourth grader, Ella Schale, comparing her experience at her last school with BCS. “And yet you feel like you’re learning something and it’s so hard yet you feel so free, and like, it’s so much fun.”

Make Friends with the Monsters in Your Emotional Closet By Denise LaBarre What do you do with the monsters in your emotional closet? Reason with them? Drown them with your substance of choice when they rattle the broom handles? Ignore them? We all have at least some emotional residue from the past. Shame, guilt, fear, sadness, anger – sometimes even joy gets stuck in there.

How about trying a different approach, accepting your negative feelings along with the sweeter ones?

Making friends with those “monsters” is ultimately easier than covering them up, pushing them away, or fighting with them. What seemed deadly from a kid’s perspective can look way more manageable through adult eyes.

Unpleasant emotions are a normal part of the human experience. But as a child, if you were not shown a healthy way of dealing with intense feelings as they arose - or worse, were made to deny and suppress them - your only recourse was to shove them away, letting them fester and multiply in your inner closet.

The anger you felt when your second-grade teacher accused you unfairly or the sadness you felt when your beloved pet died felt unbearably huge when you were seven. Similar injustice or loss only adds more shadowy shapes to the pile.

Eventually that mass of unresolved issues begins to leak out in the form of symptoms. The symptoms begin with “stress” and they span the gamut from physical to psychological - neck and shoulder tension, sleep problems, digestion problems, heart problems, anxiety attacks, depression, etc.

It’s the energetic shut-down of suppressing emotion that leads to physical problems and stretching out an olive branch to good old Anger, Shame and Grief in the closet can help resolve the physical pain you are feeling right now. Honestly, the fear of your anger or sadness or guilt, shame, or lack of forgiveness is way worse than the feelings themselves.

I remember my 3-yr-old daughter freaking out when she heard she’d get an injection. After what felt like hours of wailing, running and hiding, the nurse slipped her the shot without her realizing it. Afterward, I looked at her and said, “was all that drama worth it?”

She stopped crying, shrugged her shoulders and said, LIVING ALOHA

“But I was afraid. I thought it was going to be worse,” and walked away. The fear of the shot was worse than the shot itself. So it is with negative emotions. And it’s ok to ask for help.

Approaching the closet is easier with encouragement and perspective from someone not as scared of your shadowy shapes. With the light of love and acceptance you see that the sadness, anger and shame that scared you so badly when you were little is just everyday human emotion, badly lit. With practice over time, you learn to be comfortable with your emotions as they arise. You can use the energy you spent to hold the door shut to have more fun, instead. With a warm hand to hold and beam of loving insight you free the “monsters” you’ve been guarding and yourself along with them.

The great defining moment of our time

By Andrea Scholz The recent UN report on climate change predicts a dire future for human habitation on the planet unless strong actions are taken.

Living Aloha Magazine was recently fortunate to interview Sandra Steingraber, author of Living Downstream, Having Faith and Raising Elijah, about the actions that can be taken to combat the environmental crisis.

As a society, we tend to close our eyes or look the other way when situations are overwhelming or have no clear solutions. In her recent book Raising Elijah, Steingraber refers to this dynamic as ‘well informed futility’. This dynamic can be used to describe a global response of inaction to the environmental crisis.

“I do believe that despair over our environmental situation is the biggest obstacle to change. The only antidote to despair is action, but despair itself can be paralyzing, so that it creates a psychic situation where action is impossible,” states Steingraber.

As an environmental author and biologist, Steingraber’s strategy is not to diminish the problem or make it smaller to appear more doable, but rather present the problem honestly, at the magnitude it exists.

“If we can’t diminish the size of the problem then the only thing to do is ask people to greatly expand the magnitude of their actions.

And so that is what I am asking people to do in Raising Elijah, is become superheroes.”

“The message I am trying to convey with my own life is that these are not ordinary times, we need to get on wartime footing here.”

The wartime urgency is a race against the clock to implement immediate positive environmental changes that are aligned to protect the well-being of our children and the planet. We can make that alignment happen through legislation and personal choices such as where we spend our dollars, time and energy.

While small doable steps of recycling and energy conservation are good steps, those steps as Steingraber puts it, “come nowhere near a solution… to catastrophic climate collapse, which is a cliff face we are rapidly approaching.”

“We are now faced with the great moral crisis of our time, which is the imminent collapse of the ecological system on which our children’s lives depend. So now we are called upon to do enormous heroic things because no one before us could find the courage to do, so now our task is made even larger but we can’t desist from it.”

Steingraber’s personal solution to implementing environmental change is to be very public about her actions and beliefs, which has included in the last year becoming a civil disobedient and being separated from her children while in jail for two weeks. It has also included giving away a $100,000 check to the antifracking movement; the amount of the Heinz Award she

Nobody should be sitting on the sidelines trying to decide whether they are going to join the struggle. If you have kids, it is your duty to protect them from harm. Our kids can’t live without pollinators. Pollination provides us with 1/3 of the food we eat. Pollinators are in trouble

because of climate change. We can’t live without oxygen and half of the oxygen is provided to us by the oceans plankton and they are in trouble because of climate change”.

“There’s plenty of good news. We have the technology to entirely run our economy on wind, water and solar power. It’s no longer the case that it would be unrealistic or a pie in the sky idea, the technology we have can do it”.

There is urgency to implementing action.

Steingraber points out, “if we have the ability to end the fossil fuel party then we are morally obligated to do it.

The oil and gas industry is the worlds largest industry and controls the political situation and it’s formidable but it’s not more powerful than all of us.”

With every moment that passes, more toxins are released into the environment and thus into the bodies of everyone on the planet. The toxins accumulate in our bodies through the air, water and food chains we ingest.

These toxins bio-accumulate in our bodies and cause cancer, mental illness and reproductive issues, to name a few.

“The magnitude of the environmental crisis is such now, and the urgency is such, that it requires us to set aside a lot of other things we might like to spend time on. And if we did, we could turn this around, that’s the good news here. It is not a lost cause but we have only a few years to do it. I am calling on people to make big changes here, not something that will be easy to fit into their schedule,” emplores Steingraber.

It is through strong action that we shift out of despair and provide ourselves and our children with the hope that the predicted future can be changed.

“All together we could transform our economy in ways that would allow our kids and our children’s children to have a future, but it requires us shake off the stupor and the despair and get to work really quickly.”

The stakes are high and it requires us to fight with our whole hearts, our time, our skill sets and with our bank accounts.

“I don’t have a college education fund for my kids (ages 12 and 15). My understanding of the biology and the science is that by the time they are old enough, the climate situation is going to be so far out of control it’s going to be ‘all bets are off’. So I am taking any money I would set aside for their higher education to fight climate change”.

Steingraber suggests that everyone find ways to use their individual skill sets to contribute their time and energy to the aspect of the fight that calls to you. Writers can write articles and letters to legislators and media.

Social media experts can help spread the word through the internet. Videographers and photographers can document and make public the environmental atrocities happening in their area. No matter your area of expertise, the environmental crisis affects you in many ways, so find your passion and take action.

Steingraber believes we are at the very beginning of a massive environmental human rights movement comparable to the civil rights movement and the women’s rights movement.

“The great defining moment of our time now is to bring the fossil fuel party to an end. It’s killing our kids through toxic exposures and it’s killing the planet”.

Farm to table with Kama’aina Cooking

As “woofers” (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), the two entrepreneurs were attracted by the work trading opportunity available at Sailing Windward Farm.

“We found this farm and people here are wonderful, very knowledgeable and have taught us so much,” said Madison. “We knew we enjoyed cooking together and we were like, why not make our passion into a career?”

“It is really great having all of the farm produce that we spend all day growing,” added David, while looking out at the gardens below their home and the incredible view beyond.

“It is so much more rewarding to be chopping up vegetables that you knew you grew,” Madison agreed.

Madison has experience teaching healthy cooking techniques in a family setting. While in Kansas she encouraged a family with multiple nutritional concerns to switch to a plant based diet and the results were profound.

“Her family started losing weight, her husband’s blood pressure dropped…it was really wonderful and amazing to see the transformation,” said Madison.

Madison worked with the family for six to eight months, and performed a complete “overhaul” of their nutritional choices.

“It was all frozen food, so we went in and just got everything out of there,”explained Madison.“Completely new food. Completely new lifestyle.”

Madison was challenged with catering to the family’s preferences while introducing a new food concept. Both the children and the husband found transforming from fast food eaters to accepting replacement proteins, such as mushrooms, difficult.

While the husband may have had initial misgivings, after losing 40 pounds the benefits soon became appealing. Before Madison left the family, the husband was performing 25 handstand push ups.

“Which is a huge difference from a man who could hardly walk up the stairs without getting out of breath,” said Madison.

Farm to table is what Madison and David want to promote to others. Getting people inspired about not only farming but also organic food and the organic local movement.

“We’re out there trying to spread the word,” explained David.

Our Daily Food Choices Matter

The diet business is a billion dollar industry, and growing!

Decisions we make about which foods to eat also have a powerful impact on our health, the environment, and the lives of animals. Here are three reasons to consider shifting to a plant-based (vegan) diet.

A plant-based diet is the healthiest.

The number one cause of death in the US is heart disease, and cholesterol and saturated fat blocking are the main causes of heart attacks and strokes. Many people are surprised to learn that all animal-derived foods, including meat, eggs, and dairy products, contain cholesterol, and are usually high in saturated fats and concentrated protein, all which have been shown to increase heart disease and/or cancer risk. Plant foods, on the other hand, are always free of cholesterol and concentrated proteins, and usually very low or devoid of saturated fat.

phytochemicals -- the nutrients that keep us healthy and vibrant. Plants, which also can contain all the protein and calcium we need, are packed with fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.

In the words of vegan nutrition expert Michael Klaper, MD, “Your body has absolutely no nutritional requirements for the flesh or milk of other animals. All requirements can be obtained through non-animal sources.” Going vegan is the single best thing you can do for your health.

Animal agriculture is destructive to the environment.

Most of us are unaware of the extent to which our food choices impact the Earth’s environment. Pollution is one consequence of raising animals for food production.

Seventy per cent of the organic water pollution in the US is attributable to animal agriculture. Because these animals are injected, fed, and sprayed with antibiotics and pesticides, their waste is filled with toxic chemicals.

Much of it is washed off by rains, untreated, into our waters.

Animal agriculture is also quickly depleting our resources: The meat and dairy industries consume over 50 per cent of all the water used in the US. Most of the water is used to irrigate the pasture and crops that livestock eat. Think about this: It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef but only 25 gallons of water to produce one pound of wheat. It takes 40 times the fossil fuel to produce a pound of protein from feedlot beef than to produce a pound of protein from soybeans. Plant-based food production requires only five per cent of the farmland needed for animal-based production – another great reason to switch to a plantbased diet!

used in agricultural production. Cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals exploited for food and fiber in the United States are considered primarily as commodities or “tools of production,” not sentient beings. The result is that farm animals are subjected to grossly inhumane conditions and suffer from both physical and psychological disorders as animal factories seek to maximize productivity and profitability. If dogs, cats, or parakeets were treated the same way as factory-farmed egg-laying hens, pigs, or veal calves, those responsible would face animal cruelty charges. The pain a pig feels is no different from the pain a dog feels.

It is time to re-evaluate our food choices, and make conscientious decisions that are consistent with our values and that promote compassion instead of cruelty.

As a civilized nation, we have an ethical obligation to prevent animal cruelty and to treat animals – including farm animals – as sentient beings. In doing so, we prevent intolerable suffering, and we elevate the human spirit.

SHAKA Movement strides forward Over 13,000 signatures against biotech experimentation

By Daniel Betts Five citizens of Maui and 400 volunteers have accumulated 13,000 signatures on a citizen’s initiative for a temporary moratorium on all open air experimentation of genetically modified crops and mixed pesticides in Maui County until a detailed, county administered, Environmental and Public Health Impact Study (EPHIS) is delivered, and includes current scientific data, that proves that the activities of biotech companies are not harmful to the people, land, water, air and reefs for current and future generations. The action should result in a ballot to vote on the proposal in the November election.

The County of Maui allows six months for the process of gathering signatures, but the SHAKA Movement and their volunteers accumulated more than enough signatures in just six weeks.

On April 7th 11,000 petition signatures were presented to the County Clerk’s office. The county will require 45 days to verify the signatures, after which the SHAKA Movement will be notified of how many additional

signatures they will need to meet the minimum 8,500 signatures required in order for the proposed moratorium to be placed on the November ballot.

Ever since the County of Maui has been used by biotech companies for biological and chemical testing, the citizens of Maui have been in opposition to their activities in response to reports of new and increasing health issues.

The SHAKA Movement is an advocacy, communications and educational outreach program and hub, where people and organizations come together to work in unison to affect a positive change for the environment and for the people of the Hawaiian Islands.

Tripping the light fantastic: Genetic Voice Printing

By Daniel Betts The device sounds like a trippy iTunes visualizer, but it is far more profound. You sit in a chair that has been rigged to “feel” the music through the wood in the chair as well as through headphones attached to your ears.

Meanwhile a magnetic field is being generated around your body. The glasses you are wearing have four white flashing lights sitting behind each closed eyelid. With the lights flashing, and music flowing through your mind and body, the thought may occur – is this a time machine? Answer: Yes. “When you first go in the chair, you do a life review,” explains Tanja ‘Kala’ Miller, Genetic Voice Printing (GVP) facilitator. “You go backwards in your life and eventually you end up back to the first time you can remember being made wrong, to the first welding in of a belief system like, ‘I am bad’ or ‘I’m not worthy.’ Whatever you made up about yourself and then upon experiencing that ‘bad feeling’ while in the chair, that emotional link

just vaporizes. Then you go forward into your life and imagine what you would like your life to look like.”

The facilitator will ask some very important questions about your past, about your parents – about your life; specifically questions that concern the parts of you that aren’t working, and are preventing you from being the true “authentic” YOU. Through these questions, you will discover the statements that you have used to define your existence - that are simply untrue. These usually originated from negative beliefs, traumas and fears – some of which aren’t even yours, but belonged to your ancestors – and have been passed down to you through your DNA. “I am not good enough; I am unworthy of love; I will never be successful; I suck!” are some examples of the negative programs that can be lodged in your subconscious mind.

If you were to imagine your mind as a hard drive, these negative statements are like viruses. Your hard drive can have the very best software, but if a virus is running, your performance and the effectiveness of your software will be defective or will not run at all.

Thankfully science, through GVP, has discovered that the essences of these negative “programs” are broadcast over frequencies in our voice. Speaking into a

microphone, the voice-mapping software interprets the voice frequencies and maps the negative programs of the subconscious mind.

“It doesn’t record your words,” says Tanja. “Just the frequencies in your voice. If I were to try and play it back it wouldn’t sound like anything.”

Through your emotional reactions to life situations, negative programs are hard wired into your brain’s dendritic tree through electrochemical stimulation.

This happens when the spinal branches of the neurons broadcast these electrochemical stimulations through the axon via their synapses.

With voice map in hand, the goal is to “pop” the negative programs from the dendrites, by feeling the very emotions that wired in these programs initially.

In order to reach the source of negativity, one has to feel the emotion attached to the program – sadness, anger, guilt…they all come to the surface. The past is relived with the intention of discarding the negativity – a scary prospect to some, but having very immediate positive life changing benefits. It is like having the opportunity to go back and repair the damage. You can’t change the past, but you can resolve it.

Now, back to the chair. Despite the fact that the lights are pure white, suddenly colors, shapes and patterns immediately greet your eyes. Nobody has the same experience, because it is your subconscious that is creating it. You see swirling shapes and patterns, random light bursts, barely definable shapes and white noise; all the while you are taking yourself backwards in time, seeking those moments that defined the negativity that impedes your progress through life. As you travel back thru your life, you will zero in on events that you may have forgotten, or perhaps an incident that happened to one of your ancestors that left a negative program in your DNA. Having landed in the target memory, the goal is to experience the emotion that comes with it and “pop” it by confronting it directly. The initial experience isn’t always pleasant, but once the memory is confronted and discarded, the pain, guilt or anger associated with it disappears completely.

Creativity Sessions can be a short as an hour or as long as eight to ten hours for the Immersion Session, depending upon the work that needs to be done.

Inspiration versus “Compare and Despair” We all need inspiration, and I know how hard we can be on ourselves. Time and time, no matter how good they look, women will compare their insides; how they feel in their skin, to a magazine cover model’s outsides.

“I am not in shape. I will never look as good as I want to look. How am I ever going to look good in that new bikini or dress? I’ll never look like so and so. You know, the woman on the magazine cover, the woman down the street, that neighbor, that girl at the gym…” on and on.

You get the point! One negative thought after another.

How is your body EVER going to recover from that much scolding and criticism?

Many women fall prey to destructive self-talk, which ultimately will zap us of all our radiance, if we let it!

Many women are unaware of the constant negative chatter going on in their head, which is methodically chipping away at the good feelings and a sense of individual beauty.

Feeling good is our birthright My journey started many years ago. I wasn’t always fit. I carried a great deal of self-loathing. I didn’t feel beautiful. I avoided people. I suffered from an eating disorder, which day-by-day was killing me. I hated my body, and as a child I had been exposed to inappropriate sexual behavior, which only made my self-esteem worse.

baggy pants. Despite having already gone through a lot of healing in my early life, I had succumbed to the perception that the beautiful woman within me will just have to be unrealized, succumbing to living in the shadows.

However deep inside of me, there was a small voice screaming for my attention, “You can feel better, you deserve to feel and look good!”

I won’t elaborate on how bad I felt or for how long I felt bad. We all know what “bad” feels like. My awakening to a healthier, happier self did not happen overnight either, and the toughest battleground did not take place in my body, but in my head.

Giving yourself permission to shine A spark ignited inside of me when I realized I had permission to shine, I had permission to change.

This was a new way of looking at things. I realized something on a cellular level - I had never really given myself permission to be happy. I was not doomed to my body shape and emotional form.

Neither are you.

That inner feeling of permission, which is our birthright, made me realize we are only as stuck as we keep telling ourselves we are. Anything is possible when our minds

are on board, all the way. Life is constantly evolving, and so is my body and state of mind.

In my Living Aloha column, Body and Soul, I’d like to share with you what I do on a daily basis to maintain a sense of feeling good, beautiful, motivated and fit.
