Support Local~ This issue focuses on all things local. We explore many ways to live more resourceful. Growing your own food and eating mostly foods that come from close to where you live keep the money in your community and strengthens your ‘ohana. We give you 9 good reasons to shop at farmer’s markets. Eat more, healthier and save money while seeing your friend’s smiling faces. We’ll also feature several sustainable businesses’ healthy foods and body products made using all or mostly local organic ingredients for their goods. Supporting these businesses makes it possible for them to not only sustain themselves but to grow and develop new things that benefit our communities. This year is the first VegFest on Oahu. Mark your calendars for September 24th at the Honolulu Hale. It’s a free, family friendly event celebrating plant-based, sustainable living with delicious vegan food booths, inspiring speakers, learning kitchen with cooking demos. They will have a wellness market, music and other entertainment. VegFestOahu.com. Lastly, I’m really touched by the support we received from the community at our first fundraiser “Tribal Drum & Dance Jam” at Makawao Union Church. It’s great to know there are so many people wanting to make a difference in our communities. Your donations help us print more copies so our message of health and compassion gets out to more people. There will be another planned after the summer in September. We’ll keep you posted. We look forward to seeing you there. It will be another special event. See pictures of all the fun at our first event on page 20.

Happy summer and please be safe.

home made & home grown Ono and mo’ bettah! by Denise LaBarre I used to think high-grade balsamic vinegar imported from Italy was the best there is. Then a friend gave me some superb banana vinegar he made by fermenting Haiku apple bananas. It’s even more flavorful than balsamic, plus has extra nutrients from the live probiotics that haven’t been killed by pasteurization or preservatives! Exotic is not always better and there are many ways home-grown, and made-nearby are better for you than anything produced in a far-away ecosystem. When I moved to Maui from the Mainland 25 years ago, I brought my Mainland consumption patterns with me. They changed quickly because they don’t belong on an island in the middle of the Pacific. (I would say now that those consumption patterns don’t belong anywhere.) I saw that things cost 25% more here simply to cover the cost of transportation and produce from the mainland was often wilted or manipulated to appear fresh when it isn’t.

You can grow a lot of food on a small plot of land, most anywhere in Hawaii.

Our bodies are not designed to digest the food-like stuff that has been altered to last for months on shelves in the center of a modern grocery store. If a food “item” can survive a trip across the ocean, it’s not as fresh as produce from your garden or a farmer’s market. Processing replaces the volatile, nutritious parts of food (which bacteria and fungi also like to eat) with salt, sugar and chemicals that retard spoilage over long-distance transport and storage. This comes at the expense of nutrition, digestion and at high cost to our overall health.

Kmart was the first big box store to come to Maui. People lined up on the sidewalk outside days before it opened, excited to be the first inside. Then Walmart came, then Costco, and now Target. Many local businesses closed, unable to compete. With each closure of a small business, off-island mega-businesses got more of our local dollars and the cycle exacerbated. I miss Maui Garden Store and the mushroom farm in Haiku. We’ve traded that wise local gardening advice and those ono mushrooms for more plastic stuff made in China.

Exotic is not always better

Food spoils. You want what you eat to be grown nearby and as fresh as possible. Our bodies evolved in harmony with the microbes in the soil, air, plants, and animals around us. Eating mostly-local is the story all humans lived until relatively recently. Even though some humans lived in urban centers where they could find exotic goods that traveled long distances by horse, camel, or boat, the majority of their food came from nearby and was prepared and eaten fresh, or preserved for the lean times. Modern agriculture produces a few crops for fast mass, ease of use, and transport-ability (e.g. russet potatoes grown to make trillions of french fries.) We can grow and eat more tasty and nutritious varieties at home - e.g. Okinawan purple, Yukon gold, All Blue—which are better suited to overall human and planetary sustainability. Because of our great weather, all of us in Hawaii can grow our own food, at least some of it. Another friend shares his homemade apple liquor with us; I make sauerkraut and share it around. If we manage our resources wisely and share with each other, we have plenty.

Go Green. Go Prius.

est. city 48 hwy 51est.

The hybrid that started it all.

Prius changed the world 15 years ago. See why it’s still the benchmark for hybrid vehicles.

When you zoom out to see the big picture, local is clearly better. You might even be willing to forego the vast, ever-present variety of products from every part of the world when you see what it costs us and the planet. (Read Barbara Kingsolver’s book, High Tide in Tucson, written over the year she committed to consuming only what was produced within a few miles from where she lived, Tucson, AZ!) As you shift your habits to fresh and local your preferences and body will realign. It doesn’t take long for your taste buds to prefer a tree-ripened local banana over an exotic one, picked excessively green, gassed to ripen artificially, and shipped thousands of miles. (My kids call those “bullshit bananas.”) The good news is that new, sustainably-focused farms and local businesses are springing up—like mushrooms. We need to support them by buying their products and voting for initiatives that support local production. • T ry coming to a Hawaii Farmer’s Union United meeting. The Haleakala chapter of HFUU meets at Haiku Community Center the last Tuesday of the month and the Mauna Kahalawai (West Maui) chapter at Maui Tropical Plantation the third Thursday of every month. Now more than ever, we need to support small mom and pop businesses here if they—and we—are to survive here. Exotic food and other products should not be most of what we consume and they are not necessarily better. The things we don’t produce here we need to consume lightly, in balance with nature and the seasons of production. Use local-made as your go-to and use exotic (aka imported) stuff sparingly.

nine reasons to shop at

thefarmer’s market by Tracy Tarlow Who knew improving the world could be so simple? Now you do. All that needs to take place is, we the people, choosing to value, support and share our local resources. Try shopping at the Farmer’s Market for the bulk of your sustenance and I promise your life will get a lot more delicious!

1

SAVE MONEY NOW

Besides having higher quality, fresh food, Farmers Markets have the lowest prices on organic produce. All fruits and vegetables are at least 50 cents to $1 cheaper. Farmers markets in general are less expensive because: a) there is no middle-man; you are getting your food directly from the source, b) you have more options, for instance there are 2 or 3 people selling taro and their prices vary, c) you have the opportunity to ask for a bargain or make a trade, and d) there are more chances for deals and price cuts because farmers either have a large harvest of one crop or they are wanting to sell out before the market is over.

2

IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

Do you ever strive to eat healthier but find it hard to make decisions at the grocery store because there are so many options to choose from and ingredient lists to read? Going to the Farmer’s Market is like a taking a breath of fresh air. You will be relieved to find that it is like a grocery store except it is only the healthy products! At the market, you will find whole, nutrient-dense foods, which are the most simple and direct path to good health. Turns out these foods also happen to be colorful, delicious, filling and exotic! If you eat local, fresh vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, carrots, kale and beets, carbohydrates such as taro, purple sweet potato, and pumpkin, healthy fats such as macadamia nuts and avocado, protein such as Maui Tempeh, and fruit such as apple bananas, papaya and cherimoya on a daily basis,

you are satiating your cells with all the rich minerals and vitamins that they need to function optimally. If you feel that only eating fruits and vegetables will be boring and rigid and may take away that special pleasure that you get from eating certain treats, you will still find an array of amazing treats at the market! Muffins, breakfast bars, cinnamon crisps, homemade sweet or savory breads-wheat and wheat-free, raw almond, garlic crackers, kombucha, vegan cheese, etc. The Farmer’s Market is essentially one big outdoor healthy grocery store!

3

INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE

We all get older and there is no choice in that matter. Yet we do have a choice in the state of our bodies as we age. Do you want to be healthy and radiant with sparkling eyes and luminescent skin? Or do you want to be dull, weak and weary? If you decide to commit to better health by buying local, organic foods, you can bank on the fact that your body will still be thriving and vital when you are in your 60’s and 80’s. Healthy food is preventative medicine. You are greatly reducing your need for doctor’s visits, prescription drugs or cancer treatments if you choose to eat this way. Fill your tank with clean and wholesome fuel and your future will be brighter than the full moon!

4

LOCAL FOOD IS FRESH

Another benefit to buying from the outdoor market instead of the grocery store is that the food is much more fresh. Farmers typically pick the produce the night before or the morning of the market. The closer to being harvested you eat your food, the more VITAL LIFE FORCE ENERGY your food contains. The produce at the grocery store has been shipped for many miles. They have been separated from THEIR energy source for days and days. They are mostly DEAD. When you feed yourself food that is still ALIVE, you will become more full of life and radiance.

5

LIVE YOUR DREAMS!

Do you desire to become more successful in any areas of your life? A simple shift from eating processed foods to whole, nutrient-dense foods will shift your entire world. These foods carry a higher vibration. With that, your energy levels and consciousness will grow. When our consciousness raises, we are more capable to engage with and handle our experience. Your moods, relationships, and perceptions will be strengthened and fortified. You will be capable of bringing your own innate power and presence to each moment. This can and will lead to success in any area you choose. Your life will blossom and open to circumstances you have only dreamed.

6

HELP THE PLANET ¯ (MALAMA DA `AINA) Do you ever ask yourself, “I hear about all the environmental problems our world is facing but what can I do to help?” You can take responsibility for some of these issues by choosing to shop local and organic. You are ensuring that the beautiful Mother Earth, our surrounding environment, is being protected, respected and replenished. When you shop local, you are personally contributing to cleaner air/ reducing greenhouse gasses, cleaner fresh water and ocean water, more fertile soils and lowering waste and oil consumption. The farmer’s market items create a smaller footprint on our precious planet. a) Clean air and reducing global warming because greenhouse gases emissions will lower from less trucks, planes and boats shipping your food to you. b) Clean water because large-scale, inorganic farming uses pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers, which are toxic to humans and animals. When these toxins enter our waterways, it is like they are entering our blood stream. This harmfully affects everything because water 12

connects and sustains all of life. When you support local and organic farms with your dollar, you are saying, “I want zero pesticides and chemical fertilizers in our fresh and ocean waters.” c) Clean soil because organic, local, produce typically comes from small farms. Farmers on smaller plots till less and are more intimately connected to the land. There is greater respect and reciprocity with the soil. They live on the farm, have animals, keep bees and are creating their own compost and use fewer imported fertilizers. d) L owering waste because reduces the amount of plastic bags and bottles we create and consume. When shopping at the market, you can put the food directly into your basket or into reused plastic or cloth bags and most drinks are sold in glass. Making and getting rid of plastic is one of the biggest uses of oil, which is a finite resource. This is one of the biggest reasons to shop local. The earth needs our support in cleaning up her air, water, soil and landfills.

7

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY I feel so amazing giving $50-$100 a week to the local vendors because I know that I am doing more than buying groceries. I am affecting economic change. In economics, when demand goes up, supply naturally has to rise as well. When we shop at the market, we are saying, we want more of this. So naturally, more farmers, gardeners, food artisans and crafts people will start to emerge. This will allow for more jobs. Jobs that people will find more fulfilling and meaningful because they are more connected to the land and their passion and purpose. Keeping our dollars on island will ripple out to all local business sectors and the local economy will be boosted.

8

GROW JOBS FOR OUR YOUTH

When demand and supply rise for local food, people will hear how lucrative and simple growing food is and a new wave of farmers and gardeners will start popping up to fulfill the demand.

How awesome would it be if farming and gardening were a more valued job? After all, food is the very thing we all live off of! What if, when kids get to high school, they can choose to apprentice on an organic farm? Our youth, especially boys who are ages 14-21, have high amounts of energy, physical ability and exuberance. This job would give youth the purpose they crave and, in turn, they could be the island’s most valued heroes! Farming or diversified organic agriculture doesn’t have to be something an old man does, it can be something the next generation does happily! There are lots of aspects to organic food production that can be turned into a successful business. Maintaining plant nurseries, grafting trees, creating compost, collecting amendments from the sea, harvesting and bringing food to market or restaurants, driving the tractor, weeding, mulch-making, climbing trees and pruning them. When we create demand for local food, naturally, people of the island will redirect their energy to new and more fulfilling jobs.

9

DYNAMIC SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

The Farmer’s Market is your one stop shop to all the best local food you can find. Not only are you able to find all the best stuff year-round, there is bright, supple morning sunshine, smiling faces, fresh-brewed coffee and replenishing juice. There are pre-made, flavor-packed meals from all world lineages. Every time I go, I see a new stand selling a new, innovative product such as coconut candy, island jam, pickles, kombucha, dog treats or fresh coconut milk smoothies. And there is also a consistency week-after-week of items such as fresh Thai green papaya salad, mochiko cones and coconut kefir yogurt. The Saturday Farmer’s Market in Pukalani here on Maui is a social event too. Since it only happens during specific hours, you are bound to see your friends there! It is a great place to catch up with friends and inform each other about the latest community events.

Another benefit to the market is the relaxation and entertainment. You can sit in the grass or at picnic benches and enjoy a breakfast meal with family while listening to live Hawaiian music.

I love the feeling I have when I leave the farmer’s market. It is a lighter feeling in my chest, butterflies in my stomach, a heightened sense of hope, positivity and fulfillment. The energy at the market is generously full of joy and love. One may catch this heightened morning vibration and surf its wave home.

Nothing you have to do, nowhere you need to go, no pressure to be or do anything other than whatever you want. had overtaken the planet. You imagined what kind of world you wanted to live in, you started taking steps to create it, and now that world has been made. Now it’s a reality. Imagine that. At first this new world you created was a parallel world that existed right alongside the old one you’d always lived in, and many from the old, corrupt world couldn’t see anything new being formed, although it was being done right in front of their eyes…as you gradually began to build the new, peaceful world and withdraw from the old system. It took some folks a while to realize they’d been tricked by their governments. They didn’t want to believe how treacherous and widespread the deceptions really were, until it became so glaringly obvious that no one could any longer deny the truth: Almost all of the world’s governments had been taken over by one small group which sought to enslave and then destroy much of the populace. Since they’d finally recognized that the system was designed to oppress them, the people reacted differently than they had in the past when they’d gotten fed up. Instead of responding the way they’d always responded, trying futilely to change the existing system, the people began to rebel, peacefully. They began to protest and demand new leaders and a new government. But then it occurred to them: They didn’t need government at all! What had it done but oppress them? What had it done but always make things worse? Elders from indigenous tribes all over the Earth began to speak out and inform the people that life had been better before government took over the planet, and they showed them how simple it was to return to living this way…far less complicated than the way most humans currently lived, actually. With so many realizing that there were ways to live happily and better without the controls of leaders, arbitrary laws and enforcement of those laws, the rebellion unfolded to another level as military and policemen began to throw down their weapons and tear off their hats, casting them to the Earth. “We will not support this war against our brothers and sisters anymore!” they cried. Without them, the elite had no one to force the masses to do anything anymore. And the people were free. One by one, individuals began to disengage, retrieving and reclaiming their life force, and putting it toward

building a new world. This new, peaceful world became real for so many people that the old, corrupt one began to crumble, since so few were participating in it anymore. It happened rapidly, as masses of people shifted their focus from one world to another and there was no longer enough energy to support the old structure…which collapsed, like a building with an unstable foundation. The people were shocked to see that they were the ones who had been supporting the old world. Imagine a world where you live on a plot of land you’ve made into a permaculture haven: You’ve created a beautiful homestead that’s self-sustaining, and you live in harmony with all of Nature around you. You’ve become a part of the land, and you live, as everyone does now, with respect for all life. You’ve created ways to meet your needs in response to what you’ve observed within the existing eco-system of your home. You grow most of your own food, medicine and hardwood, and whatever else you want, you obtain from someone in the community who grows it. You’ve built simple solar and water-generated electricity centers, and you catch all your own water from rainfall.

When there’s something you can’t do or make yourself, you go to the nearby fair trade market or post an ad in the barter bulletin. Or you ask a neighbor to help you, since giving has now become the most fluid economic currency in the new world. Everyone’s needs are cared for because everyone cares for each other. People help whoever happens to need help close by, and the giving culture promotes connection with one another that was rarely experienced in the old world. What started out as mainly barter has evolved into most things being freely given now, since there’s so much abundance in the new world.

Imagine a world: Life is easy. Life is simple. You realized that you’d been conditioned to believe hard work and suffering was necessary only so you would participate as a slave within a heartless machine, too disempowered to stand up and rebel. You laugh now at that absurd concept, since it’s become obvious that the only problem with everyone’s needs being met was the existence of a force which controlled everyone, dominating their every move and making sure they never got too far ahead. always focused on survival, barely surviving, and exhausted from working, they’d never have enough time, energy or courage to rebel. Imagine a world free of being a worker slave. Now that the concept of land ownership is no longer an issue, everybody lives on the Earth peacefully and has plenty of space for their own families to live and grow as much as they want. Without mortgage payments, rent or land tax, living is easy. Imagine a world where everyone has enough space to live the way they want to live. Now people tend to gather together to live in communities with like-minded others, surrounded by the family homesteads of people who live similarly. Imagine a world where you cruise around in your electric car, which you plug in at night to your solar and wind-powered electricity, or you sometimes get around by bicycle or bio-diesel boat. Everything is free, since the sun charges no tax and there’s no longer all the taxes on your driving. The roads are in far better shape than they ever were, too, since people work together now like never before, on the roads and everything else. At first the people were surprised that they had such an effective capacity to take care of their own needs, particularly the collective’s needs, without being told what to do. Organization of projects was far simpler than they’d ever anticipated. Soon, everything began to look a lot different because men, women and children were putting their love into creating a beautiful, sustainable world. Freedom had a magical way of regenerating folks’ enthusiasm. Imagine a world with endless gardens, trees, food, flowers, and forests growing everywhere…murals painted upon every wall, art everywhere, music playing…community centers for gathering, sharing, learning and playing together…the Earth being tended lovingly and treated with respect…the animals being cared for and loved. Imagine a world without violence, where all beings, human and animal, are free to live out their lives as they wish, without any threat of harm. Along with the old structure went all the old laws, and people collectively began to initiate everybody living by only one law, the covenant of free will: No being can override the free will of any other being. The people had discovered that this is the only law at the root of the world’s original religions, but that it had been modified and

added to over time to create many laws… in order to control the people. This being the one essential covenant that everyone could agree on, one which would embody everything else, there was no longer any need for additional laws. Imagine a world where people have compassion for each other, a world without prisoners—not human, nor animal—a world where people work out their differences by communicating directly with each other. Imagine a world of peace. These changes may seem to take us back a few decades but are simply returning us to the last sustainable place we were, before our relatively recent era of planetary destruction. These changes will bring us decades ahead in sustainability, without any of the waste of our modern destructive society. Imagine saving what’s left of our world and restoring it.

Imagine a new world of paradise on Planet Earth.

Call to action: There’s no better time than this crucial moment in history to fully reclaim your power as an individual and a vital piece of the collective. We need you. Each and every one of us is necessary to be one of those who removes a brick in the wall standing between us and our own full freedom. It is time now, for every one of us to take the steps to create a new world. Many of us in Hawaii have already been doing this for a long time, laying the foundation. In fact, Hawaii has the potential to become a living example of sustainability and well being for the entire world. Let’s do this together! Living Aloha Magazine is, at its heart, an activist group utilizing the platform of our own magazine to spread awareness and inspire real change. We want to increase our impact with festivals, retreats and learning centers…and we need our community to assist us in this mission, and help make us more dynamic. Please contact us if you’re inspired to contribute in any way — one or more of the following, or something not mentioned: Writers, ad sales, distribution, marketing, web design, event/retreat planning and management, and someone with publishing experience. And, as busy as all our lives get, we understand you may not have the time to contribute; however, we always welcome contributions in the form of donations and subscriptions to the magazine. Contact us today: info@livingaloha.net or 808-419-6147. Thank you for all your support!

or for an individual’s benefit. There is gratification in the sense of teamwork and a job well done.

This inclusive thinking is in direct contrast to how most businesses are governed. Usually the focus is merely I consider one idea in particular to be on profit and not on unity of purpose especially supportive of harmony in the or a sense of connection to a greater islands. The word is: ‘ohana. According whole. Consider shopping at a large to Wikipedia: “The word ‘ohana grocery store and the soulless feeling means family… and friends are bound of purchasing items that have no together and everyone must work personal connection to the seller and together and not forget each other.” It there is no sense of the sale being a is common for the idea of ‘ohana to be part of a loving ‘ohana. On the other applied when people work collectively, hand, if you have ever ventured into such as at a hotel or restaurant. For an organic farmer’s market, you example, the hotel staff would may notice there is a cheery be considered a work atmosphere of many ‘ohana. In schools, the people coming together families that all send ‘ohana: for a common cause. their children to the organic farmers same school could be helping & caring These could be considered considered a school an ohana because ‘ohana. When you for each other they share the vision are part of an ‘ohana of making the planet a there is an unspoken better place by growing pact to help one another chemical free foods and and care for each other. If this enriching the health of the concept were expanded to include residents in their community. all the residents on each island or all the people in your area, then there would automatically be an incentive to buy locally and support one another in having successful livelihoods. This philosophy of learning to see your neighbors, coworkers and fellow travelers on the path of life as ‘ohana could radically change the way commerce happens. When you care about another you look out for their wellbeing. Their success and happiness becomes important to you. This feeling of ‘ohana creates a loyalty and a sense of pride in the work that is done together, rather than only from

win-win situation because no one is forgotten or left behind. When you purchase products or buy services that are rendered by local folks, then you are nourishing the lifeblood of your neighbors, friends and family. This giving to one another creates a flow of energy that can be felt with the heart. It is the pulse of love being exchanged with currency. An atmosphere of harmony can be cultivated through simple acts of supporting your local sellers instead of purchasing from large corporations or on-line. Since ‘ohana means helping one another and caring for each other, I invite you to buy everything you need locally for one week and see how your heart expands as you connect with your community and experience the richness of ‘ohana firsthand.

The ‘ohana of shoppers who buy the organic food at the Farmer’s Market also get a feeling of satisfaction from contributing to the betterment of the world. Not only is there pleasure in buying healthy local organic produce to nourish their families, there is also fulfillment from contributing to another local ‘brother or sister” in their ‘ohana. There is an energy exchange between the buyer and seller that fuels the economy and the community.

Maui Sacred Earth Tea

Maui Fruit Jewels

Maui Tempeh

Maui Sacred Earth Soothing Herbal Tea Blend is the first value added product from the farm. It features medicinal herbs organically grown on site and dried in a plastic-free, solar dehydrator made from recycled glass, untreated wood, and stainless steel mesh. Guests learn about plant medicines on the permaculture tour as they help harvest holy basil, peppermint, spearmint, lemon grass, mamaki, and gotu kola. The herbs are blended, left to simmer, and after seeing the rest of the farm, guests get to sample the healing herbal tea they had a hand in picking.

Maui is worlds apart from where they met. Chris and Lin’s story begins in China, where they lived and worked for years. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in London, Lin was an accomplished pastry chef in Beijing known for her pastry classes and elaborate wedding cakes featured in publications such as Cosmopolitan Bride.

Maui Tempeh’s Adzuki Bean Tempeh is an extremely versatile food to cook with. You can slice it in any shape, crumble it, cube it or cook it whole. It can be fried, grilled, baked, sautéed, steamed or stewed, and can be used in place of meat for any recipe.

Herbs for the Soothing Herbal Tea Blend were selected for balancing qualities such as anxiety and depressed mood reduction, mental alertness, and improving memory and cognitive function. The next tea in the Maui Sacred Earth line being developed and organically grown at Ahimsa Sanctuary Farm, is the Tropical Fruit Leaf Anti-Oxidant Blend featuring soursop, noni, and olive leaf, powerful plant medicines used traditionally to enhance immune response, which may help in recovering from cancer and other illnesses.

It’s a new twist to the classic French pate de fruit. Entirely natural, wheat free, and vegan, Maui Fruit Jewels have intense flavors like nothing you’ve ever tasted. It’s over 50% fresh local fruit, pureed then combined in the traditional French technique with organic sugar, glucose, pectin, and citric acid in small, handcrafted batches.

Tour and Farm to Table vegan dinner reservations, a soon to be opened on-line store, as well as more information about permaculture and plant medicines can be found at: AhimsaSanctuaryFarm.com

The tropical produce and botanicals they found on Maui inspired them to create an award-winning confection made from local everything—Mango, Pineapple, Passion Fruit (Lilikoi), Papaya and Coconut, as well as the exotic flavors of Turmeric, Ginger Pineapple, Jalapeño Pineapple, and herb and spice-infused wines.

They were finalist for the 2014 sofi Award (Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation) in the Outstanding Confection category by the Specialty Food Association, a prestigious award in food circles. You can find them at the Pukalani Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning. Or online at: www.MauiFruitJewels.com www.HawaiiFruitPaste.com

Tempeh is a complete protein food and is one of the highest known vegetarian sources of vitamin B12. It contains all the essential amino acids, and is the most digestible way to eat whole beans. They use the finest tempeh culture that goes through a variety of tests before being shipped. They are really passionate about what they do and are dedicated to creating the finest hand-made product, always in small batches. Maui Tempeh’s tempeh is vegan, organic, non soy, non GMO, pro biotic, handmade, gluten free, cholesterol free and is pure sourced. It doesn’t get much better than that. You know it’s good when quality restaurants like Farmacy Health Bar (Pukalani and Wailuku), Maui Kombucha, Maka by Mana, Mama’s Fish House, Tuk Tuk Thai and Pangea all use Maui Tempeh within their menus. Maui Tempeh will soon be available to the public at Mana Foods, Down To Earth, Alive & Well, Rodeo General, Hanzawa’s, Farmer’s Market (both stores in Honokowai & Kihei) and Hawaiian Moons. You can also find them at the Pukalani Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning. You can even also buy it directly from them at their new kitchen at 95 Makawao Ave. in Makawao. www.MauiTempeh.co

Minerals, enzymes and good fatty acids put Vegan Aloha’s Mac Nut Cheese in a superfood class of their own. Locally sourced Big Island mac nut meat is blended and cultured to form the base of an array of cheeses, spreads, dips and sauces. They are great for your body and dairy-gluten-sugar-cholesterol and cruelty-FREE. Buttery sweet and smooth, these nuts are hand-crafted to include flavors such as Hawaiian spirulina laced Blue Mana (raw), Spicy Golden ‘Ōlena with Turmeric, Cayenne and toasted Coconuts (raw), Smokey Halakahiki with Pineapple, Walnuts and toasted Coconuts (raw) and more. At the heart of this market, you’ll find a group of people huddled around a small pink table waiting earnestly for another of the island’s hidden gems, Nicoco. This is Nicoco Hawaiian Gelato’s home market; all of the gelato is handmade in small batches right in Kalapana and is the only place you can get it served by the owners themselves. Customers travel from all across the island to get a scoop or two of this creamy vegan delight that you can feel good about eating. The secret is that it is all remarkably made from coconut, and is creamier and more delicious than any dairy based ice cream they’ve ever tried. Plus, it’s good for the aina as well.

Nicoco is Hawaii’s first all coconut based gelato company, and the founders, Sean Crowne and Ashley Campbell, are deeply committed to creating a product that is rooted in sustainability, positive social change, and a cruelty-free lifestyle. This is clearly exemplified by their signature flavors inspired by Hawaii island living, their sustainable packaging, and their locally sourced ingredients. Nicoco has over 200 flavors that range from truly rich and decadent, such as Smoked Chocolate Caramel, to delicate airy flavors like their floral line featuring Rose Petal, Pikake, Wildberry Lavender, and Hibiscus. The creativity, expertise and aloha that goes into each handmade batch is evident with every taste. The flavors rotate weekly so be sure to grab a scoop of your favorite flavor in a fresh waffle cone, made on the spot, before it runs out, which happens every time! If you can’t make it to the market, you can also find Nicoco at these other locations: The Locavore Store, Conscious Culture Café (where you can enjoy Nicoco in a Kombucha Float!), Lucy’s Taqueria, Tin Shack Bakery, Kalapana Smoothie Shack, Kalani Retreat, also keep an eye out for their specialty pint containers launching at Island Naturals soon!

Hawaii Kombucha

Hawaii Kombucha is a nano-brewery in Kealakekua on the Big Island and are dedicated to making the freshest & highest quality kombucha ever brewed. Their mission is to bring this clean, living, ancient energy beverage to the forefront of humanity, all while exercising sustainable agricultural, ecological, and business practices. We are blessed here in Hawaii with an abundance of tropical roots and fruits. Their strong network of dedicated, natural, Big Island farmers allow them to source their fruit directly. By working closely with local farms, they buy and spend locally, re-investing and strengthening their own community. By embedding social and environmental initiatives into their organization, they guarantee the needs of the future are shaped by holding them sacred today. It’s why they sponsor monthly beach clean up’s with a free keg of kombucha for volunteers and why they use plant-based compostable cups. Everything is connected! Since we live on an island, we fight single-use glass containers by encouraging our customers to bring re-useable glass containers. Whether it’s a growler, hydro-flask, or a simple washed out spaghetti jar, we sell fresh kombucha by the ounce and never bottle our product. Available now at Island Naturals, Under The Bodhi Tree, Evolution Café/Ai Pono, Kaya’s and other local spots. hawaiikombucha.org 808-557-8561 hikombucha@gmail.com

Nicocohawaiiangelato@gmail.com Living Aloha - the BIG ISLAND of HAWAII

Spicy Ninja co-founders Lauren McKinley and Christopher Bornstein have placed utmost value on being farmers and in having close personal ties to other local farmers and partners on the Big Island of Hawaii. Their joy is the literal growing of your hot-sauce peppers in some of the most fertile volcanic soil of Hawaii. “What better place to make a hot sauce, then on an island made from Lava!” All of their peppers are grown in a natural and organic way with diligence and honor paid to every step of the process. Having travelled much of his life, Christopher has always been drawn to the local version of “hot” and whatever that meant for the area he was in at the time. Those of you with gentler palates may want their “Pussy Footin’ Around” line of sauces which is their gateway line, made to entice you into the world of heat.

They really enjoy all aspects of making their sauces, especially the creativity that comes in all aspects of the venture. From making the grooviest farmers market stand to making labels just right in order to allow all of their ideas to fit into a relatively small 3x5 inch area. They thoroughly enjoy the farming aspect of growing peppers, learning what works and what doesn’t, and learning patience via the entire process. To the Spicy Ninjas, the mineral content, vitamin density and how the ingredients are grown makes all the difference. You can find them at the Hawi Farmers Market on Saturdays, from 7 a.m. till 1 p.m. Also available at Gils Lanai, Kohala Coffee, Under the Bodhi Tree, Waimea Coffee Company, Healthways II Market, Evolution Cafe/Ai’ Pono, Island Naturals and at Abundant Life. spicyninjasauce.com

vegan Aloha Justifying Bad Habits We Didn’t Know We Had by Captain Paul Watson (Sea Shepherd)

One of the strangest justifications that people have for eating meat is to say, “well plants have feelings, plants feel pain, therefore it’s just as cruel to eat plants as it is to eat meat.” Humans of course have a seemingly infinite capacity to justify their own cruelty. Meat is an addiction. I know because I was once an addict. Even now the smell of a roasted chicken makes me feel like a recovered alcoholic walking by an Irish pub. I’ve heard all the arguments from the excuse that God designed us to eat meat to the lament that they need to eat meat because they tried a vegan diet and their health deteriorated to the most ridiculous justification of all that being the horrific cruelty that vegans inflict upon innocent plants. What astounds me is that those who claim that plants feel pain do not hesitate to eat plants, or the animals that eat plants. They hold the position that eating plants is cruel yet they willfully participate in the infliction of cruelty. This is not difficult to do when you already accept the infliction of cruelty to animals. Yes, there is evidence that plants respond to outside stimulation. They respond to music, they respond to heat and cold, to fire and even to damage to their cell structure. We know that trees can communicate with each other through chemical signals. For example trees attacked by a virus or a parasite relay information to trees further away that allows for the other trees to produce antibodies to defend themselves. Plants are remarkable living organisms. The most remarkable thing about them to me is that they literally eat the light from the sun and produce their own sugars. They feed themselves using water, light and nutrients from the soil. They also form symbiotic relationships with fungus, bacteria and insects. But they do not stop there. Plants are intimately connected to the animal world all the way up to the large 44

mammals like elephants, sloths and humans. We need plants and they need us. What plants need from us most for is sex, and towards that end they work hard to attract animals including us. In other words plants want us to eat them. You won’t find many animals that wish to be eaten. Flowers and fruit are the two things that plants use to court and attract animals from insects to humans. It’s interesting that humans also use flowers and fruit to court members of the opposite sex. A flower is a signal to a bee to come and have a sweet drink of sugar and in return little packages of pollen are given to the bee to be delivered to other flowers. It all begins with the flower. Flowers have male parts called stamens that produce a sticky powder called pollen. Flowers also have a female part called the pistil. The top of the pistil is called the stigma, and is often sticky. Seeds are made at the base of the pistil, in the ovule. To be pollinated, pollen must be moved from a stamen to the stigma. When pollen from a plant’s stamen is transferred to that same plant’s stigma, it is called self-pollination. When pollen from a plant’s stamen is transferred to a different plant’s stigma, it is called crosspollination. Cross-pollination produces stronger plants. The plants must be of the same species. But how does pollen from one plant get moved to another? This is where the animals are recruited by the plants to act as the go-between with each other. When animals such as bees, butterflies, moths, flies, and hummingbirds pollinate plants they are not doing it for nothing. They are not intentionally trying to pollinate the plant. They have no idea that they are being used as a surrogate sex partner by the plant. The plants however

know in whatever way a plant can know just exactly what they are doing. The animal wants food. The plant knows this somehow. When the animal responds to the attraction, which is like a big MacDonald’s sign saying “eat here”, the animals come to the plant for a free meal.

also have a need to distribute their seeds and for this they need to attract larger animals. To do this they offer a gift of fruit. The animal eats the fruit and defecates the seeds many miles away. In this way plants have created an efficient transportation system to maintain their reproduction.

It’s not really free of course because the plant has a job for the animal. That job is to take nectar and pollen that is made at the base of the petals. When feeding, the animals rub against the stamens and get pollen stuck all over themselves. When they move to another flower to feed, some of the pollen is transferred to a different plant. Not all plants are cross-pollinated by animals. Many plants are pollinated by the wind. And it is this, in fact, that we see the role of scents and colors.

My position on the definition of intelligence is the ability to live in harmony within an eco-system and the ability to adapt to changing conditions and to manipulate the environment to serve the best interest of the species. By this criteria plants are intelligent. They may not have a brain but they have a chemical and electrical system within their cells that responds to outside stimuli and adapts. Animals eat plants but plants decide who will eat them. Some plants are toxic to some animals but not to others.

Plants that are pollinated by animals often are brightly colored and have a strong smell to attract the animal pollinators. These plants also stagger the release of pollen to attract different types of animals at different times of the year. Plants that are pollinated by wind often have long stamens and pistils. Since they do not need to attract animal pollinators, they can be dully colored, unscented, and with small or no petals, since insects need not land on them.

An apple tree gives an animal like us a gift of food. The animal then distributes the seed of the apple. But before it gives us the apple it produces flowers to attract a pollinator. Thus the bee is the pollinator and humans are transporters. In other words, both the bee and the human work for the plant and both are paid for their labor. The bee gets nectar and the human gets an apple. Thus it is that the apple tree wants the apple to be eaten.

So plants can be classified as seductive plants that need animals and independent plants that do not. Some plants

Earlier this month I ate a celery stalk. I took the base of that stalk and planted it in soil and now I have a new stalk of celery

growing in the pot. You can eat a plant and the plant will regrow. There is no animal anywhere that you can eat any part of it that will be beneficial to the animal being eaten. Now it can be argued that a wolf contributes to the strength of the caribou species by eating the weak and the sick amongst the herd. There is a valid prey-predator relationship that is beneficial to both the meat eating predator and the plant eating prey. However humans have never been a part of this prey predator relationship because we do not strengthen the herd of another species by predation. Instead we tend to take the strongest and the healthiest animals through hunting and thus that contributes to weakening the herd. It is true that domestic species have thrived in numbers although not in quality of life because of human intervention. The same holds true for plants. Unfortunately, our cultivation practices have damaged diversity and replaced diversity with a small number of plants and animals that we now depend upon. Humans have never been carnivores. Ancient hunting gathering societies were opportunistic scavenging societies. They existed on what opportunities presented themselves and the creation of weapons increased those opportunities to kill larger animals. Carnivores gorge on organs and fat often leaving muscle tissue to the scavengers like vultures and hyenas. Scavengers like dead meat and are mainly immune to the toxicity of decaying meat. A lion likes his meat fresh, hot and bloody. A hyena likes it to be semi rotten. After eating, carnivores require a great amount of water and many hours of sleep. Human meat eaters today are primarily necrovores. In other words, eaters of dead flesh, and in our case the animals we eat can be dead from many days to many years. I have been in meat markets in Brazil and in Senegal and other places and no Westerner that I know would eat the greyish green and blackish brown flesh that is usually covered with flies and is considered normal. We cover this up with a red dye made from crushed beetles and spray it with bleach to keep it from decay. The meat you see on 46

most supermarket shelves is disguised from its natural appearance on purpose. The bottom line however is this. You can’t describe 7.5 billion land dwelling hominids as hunters in a world of diminishing wildlife and devastated eco-systems. Our species are more like locusts devouring everything in our path. Every year we kill and devour some 65 billion land animals and tens of billions of sea animals. We give nothing positive back. Instead we return toxins, plastic, and numerous forms of pollution. If every Australian were to exercise their “right” to kill a kangaroo or every American their “right” to kill a deer, both species would be gone within a year. We are eating the world alive. Meat production is the leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, the leading cause of groundwater pollution, the leading cause of dead zones in the ocean, the leading cause of freshwater loss in the world, the leading cause of forest destruction and the cause of many diseases. And in response to this I get tossed the question of, “well plants feel pain also.” We are also told that vegans suffer health problems. I hear this but I have not seen it and I’ve lived with veganism for many years. My ships are vegan and my crews are healthy. But where do you get your protein? From plants! Plants provide all the protein we require. But where do you get B-12? B-12 deficiency is as much a problem for people who eat factory farmed meat as for vegan because the way that factory farmed animals are raised tends to deplete B-12 in their bodies. B-12 supplements are available but one of the primary causes for lack of B-12 is that for tens of thousands of years we ate dirt with our food and B-12 is readily found in soil. B-12 deficiency is a problem for everyone and not just vegans. Vegans are in fact healthier in many ways for taking B12 supplements than meat eaters who believe they are getting B-12 when they are not. There are some who said that they were vegans or vegetarians but that their bodies needed meat and they were getting sick. Improper vegan diets will cause problems that any improper diet will cause. The hormones, antibiotics, uric acid and heavy metals in meat and fish cause much more health issues than veganism. I know that people who eat meat like people who hunt, tend to get fiercely defensive in response to the subject of veganism. They take the very existence of vegans as a personal affront to themselves. Some say this is because of deep-seated feelings of guilt. I see it as the natural response to an addiction. For those who say it’s a life style choice all I can say is that the living, feeling, sentient beings that are eaten, it is not a

choice for them. Slavery was once a life style choice but not for the slaves. There were people who chose to own slaves and those who chose not to and the slave owners were always quick to point out that it as traditional and a matter of personal choice. Domestic animals have replaced wild animals in numbers. 50% of the biomass of wild species has been removed since 1950. Over 40% of all the fish and plankton taken from the sea is fed to pigs, chickens, domestic salmon, fur-bearing animals and house cats. It takes 600 liters of water to produce a hamburger but Greenpeace advises us to take short showers to conserve water. They never advise not eating a hamburger. One hamburger represents two months of short showers. Six hamburgers represent a year’s worth of short showers. Raising plants requires water also but much less. By replacing the plants cultivated for animal feed there would be more land to cultivate for plant production for humans. Presently, more land is used to grow crops for non-human animals than for humans. It does come down to numbers and human population escalation must be stopped. Unlimited growth defies the

law of finite resources. We are presently stealing the carrying capacity of other species and as a result we are now in an era called the Anthropocene, the sixth mass extinction event in human history. Human society will have to adapt to a sustainable vegan diet or our societies will collapse. Our present greedy, blind and corporate consumer society is killing the biosphere, killing the life support system of the planet. But to many, that does not matter. The planet may just have to suffer because too many people just simply love their cheeseburgers more.

Let’s make change! .

Paul Franklin Watson is a marine wildlife conservation and an environmental activist, who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an anti-poaching and direct action group focused on marine conservation. He’s a devout vegan, has over four decades of experience at sea, and more than two decades as Master and Commander of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society voyages to protect, defend, and conserve the Earth’s wild ocean creatures. seashepherd.org
